Welcome to Eventing

‘Welcome to Eventing’ is the newest of all the series here on Eventing Nation, and was the brain child of one of our readers. The objective of the series is to chronicle the stories of either your first event, or the first event your horse competed at. We all know that Eventing is a game of experience, which usually translates into some comical recounting of those days before we had any idea what we were getting into by starting to event. This week’s story is from Carrie Pugh. Many thanks to Carrie for submitting, and as always, thank you for reading.  If you’d like to submit the story of your first event, please send it along with a picture to [email protected]

From Carrie:

Here is a photo of my horse, Crybaby Captain Sid, and I immediately after completing cross country at our first starter trial in October 2009.  I had never ridden a (full) cross country course before that day and he took fantastic care of me. We finished 7th in our Beginner Novice rider division on our dressage score.  I think my exact words on crossing the finish line were “This is SO much more fun than hunters!”.  Since then, we have had our ups and downs.  Sid contracted squamous cell carcinoma of the third eyelid in his left eye and lost vision completely in that eye last summer, so it was a difficult year, but we are still taking lessons, going to clinics, trail riding and just enjoying each other’s company and will hopefully enter an event or two this fall.
