Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Back to Business at Finger Lakes

Now that spring has finally made an appearance up north, the Finger Lakes Racetrack in Farmington, New York is back to live racing as of late last month. With the return of trainers and their horses for the summer season also comes the return of regular listings for horses looking for new careers via our friends at Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc. (FLF).

FLF recently posted three absolutely lovely thoroughbreds looking to move on to second careers all of which have interesting pedigrees and would make great eventing prospects! Take a look:

Punching Bag (TEUFLESBERG – FLOMAR, BY TWO PUNCH): 2015 17.0-hand New York-bred gelding

This is a big boy who’s still growing! Punching Bag is a sweetheart with a kind personality, but he is a sizable and energetic young horse who’ll need an experienced handler. After just five career starts and no win, place, or show finishes it’s pretty clear Punching Bag isn’t destined to be a racehorse despite his impressive blood lines. Punching bag is by the sire Teuflesberg who’s part of the same Johannesburg/ Hennessey line as current Triple Crown hopeful, Justify. Plus, he’s out of a mare by the ever-popular Two Punch who’s been noted for producing great sport horses so he’s sure to be an athletic one!

Harmon’s Giant (FROST GIANT – ATTACHE, BY SEEKING THE GOLD): 2014 16.1-hand New York bred mare

This four-year-old was simply deemed too slow in her workouts and has thus remained unraced. While that’s too bad for her connections, we’ll consider it a good thing for whoever is lucky enough to bring home this nicely-built filly and turn her into a sporthorse. Despite not quite having the chops to make it on the track, her trainer says she has a good work ethic and really likes to gallop and go. Harmon’s Giant has great sire lines for jumping and eventing, with Giant’s Causeway and Private Account making appearances, so hopefully her desire to work can be put to use in a different discipline!

Courageous Dreamer (COURAGEOUS CAT – DREAMIN’ OF JEANNE, BY CALLER I. D.): 2015 16.1-hand New York-bred gelding

Courageous Dreamer is another horse without any top finishes in his handful of starts, but should see more success in a different career. While his nice movement and easy-going personality points to a possible future career as a show hunter, his athletic build and good balance could make him a promising eventer instead. Courageous Dreamer is a grandson of Storm Cat (who folks either tend to love or hate as a sporthorse sire) and additionally has Rahy, Blushing Groom, and Phone Trick as other prominent bloodlines in close up in his pedigree.
