The FEI Eventing Nations Cup will have a refreshed format in 2026 as the FEI aims to encourage more nations to compete and to vie for the title at the season ending finale held at Military Boekelo in October. The Nations Cup will once more be hosted in the UK and Europe next year, and the teams will start from a clean slate with double points at the Final. In previous years, the Nations Cup champion was often decided in advance of the final due to points accumulation, and while points will still accrue from each leg, the Final now becomes anyone’s game. Additionally and as always, the top nation not already qualified for the next Olympics via another route (i.e. the FEI World Championships, where the top seven nations less the host nation — in this case, the U.S. for the LA28 Olympics — will earn a berth to the Games) will earn its team spot for the Olympics. You can read more on the changes to the Nations Cup format here.

TerraNova closed out the year in a big way for the start of the 2026 US Equestrian Open of Eventing series. The CCI4*-S served as a qualifier for the 2026 Final, and it was the final chance to earn some points toward that $50,000 leaderboard bonus (split among the eventual top three points earners at the end of the season). Read a full recap on that final qualifier here.

Are you participating in No Stirrup November? This concept, originating from a desire to get stronger in the saddle, has gone through several iterations over the years, and it’s important to remember that your horse’s back should not pay the price for your no stirrup practice. If you want some tips for getting stronger this month, here’s a place to start.

Introducing Finding Purpose: A Memoir by Chelsea Canedy

What does it really mean to build a life around horses? Not just a career, not just a hobby, but a life—one that’s messy, beautiful, and at times, unraveling under the weight of its own intensity.

In Finding Purpose: A Life Managing the Passion, Compulsion, and Borderline Addiction Called “Horses”, debut author, clinician, and trainer Chelsea Canedy shares a deeply personal story of the journey that brought her to horses—and kept her there. With unflinching honesty and hard-won clarity, she invites readers into the quiet, often uncomfortable process of self-discovery that underpins a high-level equestrian career. Through detours in social work, battles with burnout, and the pressure of performance, Chelsea returns—again and again—to the grounding force of the horse.

More than a memoir, Finding Purpose is a meditation on how we learn, evolve, and show up for the things that matter most. Drawing from her background in psychology, her years of mindfulness practice, and her extensive work in equine behavior and training, Chelsea bridges the personal with the universal. This is a book for equestrians, yes—but also for anyone navigating the balance between passion and peace.

As Caroline Culbertson puts it, “Finding Purpose is an unflinchingly honest look back at the making of a spectacular horsewoman… Through Chelsea’s story, the reader will be gifted with the lessons and perspective of a hard-won mindset of growth, embracing discomfort, and finding peace in the journey of purpose and identity.”

We’re honored to share the following exclusive excerpt from Finding Purpose, available now from Trafalgar Square Books!

By that point I had a long-running internal story that told me I was always being held back because I could never afford a nice enough horse to be truly competitive. And from time to time, in moments like the one with the O’Connors’ trainer, this narrative reared its ugly head. I was sure that if I had only been given the same opportunities other young riders who had moved up the ranks had, I would have
“made it” already. Now, I began telling myself, I was simply too old to be singled out in such a way. For me, I was sure, the opportunity was gone. The whole situation with this clinician choosing a younger Pony Club member over me served to solidify my belief that I was on the “outside”—I was never going to make it and never going to be good enough.

In the grips of that story, I could not find a way to be happy for anyone who received the opportunities that I so deeply wanted. I was in a vicious cycle of jealousy, isolation, and false bravado, leading nowhere useful. I could only feel sorry for myself. The chip on my shoulder grew along with my neediness, and I’m sure it was palpable from the outside. Today, I can definitely sense it in others within whom I recognize my old tendencies. It is not an attractive quality. And it does not make you want to go out of your way to help or befriend that person.

I look back now, and I can see so many missed opportunities, like the opportunity to learn from and connect with other human beings in a genuine way, and the opportunity to truly appreciate what horses do for people and how our love for them connects us. I was so desperate to be part of some imagined elite club whose approval I was sure would mean I was “good enough” and that I would “make it” that I wasn’t open to other possibilities or directions. I thought that riding at the Olympic level was the only end game that meant anything because it would prove that I was better than all the other
riders who never reached that level. But instead of honing the skills I had and feeling grateful for the horses I could ride, I spent all my time thinking about the things I didn’t have. I lived in a state of lack. A scarcity mindset. I thought that working harder and pushing through would improve the situation I perceived to be so poor, but all it did was lead to burnout. I was exhausted and frustrated and couldn’t see the gift that was the horses who were right in front of me. I could not see the opportunity these “imperfect” beings afforded me to learn and understand others in different ways. As a rider, and as a human, I wasn’t ready for that lesson yet. I had to sink lower, hit my rock bottom, before I could figure out a new way to be with myself, with other people, and perhaps most importantly, with horses.

I was in my early twenties when my life and my negative mindset started to feel unsustainable as it was. There was no joy. All I did was drive relentlessly toward a seemingly unattainable goal—one that I
had voiced out loud to so many people in my life that turning back from it felt like it would be just another failure, like my recent divorce. I didn’t know what to do or which way to turn. All I knew was that I was unhappy in my life with horses, and for so long, horses had been my saving grace and place of peace.

Sometimes, when the path you are on feels like a one-way ride, you can’t even imagine that other paths might exist. So you soldier on, with blinders in place, and you wonder what the point of each day’s struggle toward a goal is when you’re never going to be good enough to reach it.

Looking back, it’s tempting to see that chunk of my twenties as a waste of time and energy, and to kick myself for all the missed opportunities and for what I can see was a lot of wallowing in self-pity. But that period was part of my path. We all have hills and valleys we need to walk over and through. It’s cliche, I know, but they are what shape us. They apply the necessary pressure to create change. Without discomfort from a struggle up or a fall down, there’s no real impetus to step in a different direction.

I think there are four quadrants that people and horses fit into when it comes to relating to pressure and change: The first people and horses have a high tolerance for discomfort and resist change, even though another choice or path might make them happier. They might be called “stubborn” or “close-minded.” I fell into this quadrant.

The next people and horses have almost no tolerance for discomfort, and yet they still resist change. They, however, do so out of fear of what might happen when they try something new. They get stuck easily, but they don’t seek another path, so anxiety and frustration grow as they circle the same endless drain.

Then there are those people and horses with a low tolerance for discomfort and a high desire for change. They look for the path of least resistance. They may end up taking a path that’s easier because it feels safe and non-threatening, but they may never realize their full potential because they are too afraid to fail.

Lastly, there are those with a high tolerance for discomfort and a high desire for change. They don’t mind a bit of pressure. They know that all good things come with some discomfort,
but they don’t fight growth. They seek it. They want to understand things in different ways, even when it feels like a harder path than the other options in front of them. They know what lies at the other end might just be worth it.

Friday News & Notes from Stable View

The leaderboard that will open 2026 is set after the final two early qualifiers for the second season of the US Equestrian Open of Eventing. Lucienne Bellissimo is the series leader, picking up points at both Bouckaert International and TerraNova this fall to set herself up with 80 points to start the new year. Will Coleman, hot off a win in the 4*-S qualifier at TerraNova with Diabolo, is in second with 60 points, and Canada’s Waylon Roberts picks up 55 points for third in the standings. These standings are, of course, highly likely to shift majorly as the 2026 season kicks off (and let’s not talk about it just yet — the off-season has only just begun!), but it’s still exciting to see who’s making an early statement, and it’s a nice look at who will be ones to watch in the spring.

The LA28 organizing committee is making progress towards their final site plans ahead of the next Olympic Games. Equestrian events will be held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. During this month’s FEI General Assembly in Hong Kong, officials from LA28 shared some updates on the development of the property to accommodate multiple sports (and no racing). An equestrian specialist will be starting on the ground January, and a test event will be held at some time in 2027 yet to be named. You can read a further summary of the update here.

TerraNova officials responded to public outcry, both from competitors as well as from spectators and other riders, following a particularly influential CCI3*-L cross country course this past weekend. Some riders took to social media to express frustration with the difficulty of a rail ditch combination that was heavily influential, causing problems for nearly half the field. Officials’ responses, given to The Chronicle of the Horse, also garnered mixed reactions on social media. You can read COTH’s full write-up here.

Big news for the horse industry in Maryland: this week, Governor Wes Moore signed an executive order creating a new Maryland Horse Industry Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan will be delivered by a steering committee made up of state agencies and representatives of the Maryland horse industry (who were not specified in the press release). Let’s hope eventing is represented on the steering committee and in the final Strategic Plan, which will help guide the nearly $3 billion equine industry in the state. The gap between where you are and where you want to be isn’t about skill. It’s about capacity. And here’s what no one talks about at the top level: the riders who make it look effortless have done deep work that’s completely invisible. Work that has nothing to do with riding technique and everything to do with their internal state.

The Texas horse community has slowed their movements following an outbreak of EHV-1 linked to the World Championship Barrel Racing (WPRA) Finals in the Waco area on November 5-9. Commissioner Sid Miller is urging all horse owners, trainers, and venue operators who attended or were in proximity to the event, or who have recently returned from any large equine gathering in the Waco region in the last 14 days to act swiftly, monitor their animals carefully, and implement heightened biosecurity measures. You can read more updates from the Texas Department of Agriculture here. You can also read more in Horse Nation‘s report here.

Struggling to tame your dragon in the cold weather? While Horse Nation’s Thoroughbred Logic column primarily focus on producing off-track Thoroughbreds, trainer Aubrey Graham’s advice to lean into the bend applies to all horses, really. Riding the bend not only encourages forward movement (which we all know is a great way to work through tension and reluctance to respond to aids), but it also prevents things from going awry on a straight line and can help your horse relax throughout his or her whole body. You can read more of Aubrey’s observations and insights here.

There is a live stream this week, and it can be accessed via USEF Network on ClipMyHorse TV here. There is also typically a feed on TerraNova’s website here, but we’ll correct this if it’s wrong. For information on connecting your USEF account (which includes free Fan accounts) and access to the livestream that way, click here.

This afternoon we’ll see the first pairs in the CCI4*-L starting at 3:25 p.m. EST. Dressage for the 4* divisions continues Friday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. EST with the CCI4*-S and continuing at 11:15 a.m. EST with the remainder of the CCI4*-L. The 4*-S will also show jump at 3:20 p.m. EST. Saturday is cross country day for these divisions, but will start with the 3*-L at 9:00 a.m. EST, followed by the 4*-L at 11:20 a.m., the 4*-S at 1:00 p.m. and the 2*-L to close out the day starting at 2:20 p.m. To conclude things on Sunday, the Long formats will show jump, starting with the 3*-L at 10:00 a.m. EST, then the 4*-L at noon.

You can view the full schedule (which is subject to change — be sure to reference official schedules on site and on Event Entries for the most up to date information) on Event Entries here.

There’s another live feed you might want to tune in for this weekend, and that’s the US Equestrian Open of Dressage Final, which is happening at Desert International Horse Park (Thermal, CA). The competitors in the Final will jog their horses today, and then the Grand Prix takes place on Friday starting at 7:45 p.m. EST. The Freestyle final round will take place Saturday starting at 7:45 p.m. EST. Don’t forget, one of our own eventers is competing in this Final in Laine Ashker with Ann Wilson’s Zeppelin. You can follow along live here, and you can also find scores, orders of go and more here.

The eventing community isn’t just about launching riding careers. Other paths exist alongside, and media pro Izzy McSwain is one example of this. After riding with the University of Kentucky’s Intercollegiate Eventing team, she found herself pulled towards creative work and eventually got the opportunity of a lifetime to manage a growing social media effort for Equestrian Events, Inc., the organizers of events like Defender Kentucky. She’s ridden the wave ever since, and you’ve probably watched at least 10 videos she’s edited this year. Read more about Izzy here.

Welcome to Area VIII, Tennessee! Some changes are coming to the USEA Area map: beginning with the 2026 competition season, Tennessee will officially join Area VIII, departing its longtime home in Area III. The shift, spearheaded by eventing advocates like Cathy Wieschhoff and supported by organizers such as Bill Graves of River Glen Horse Trials, reflects what many grassroots riders and organizers have felt for years: that Tennessee’s geography, eventing style, and rider base align more naturally with its northern neighbors. The move opens new doors for eventers in the region, including expanded Young Rider opportunities, the potential for Area Championships at additional venues like River Glen, which can host levels up to Intermediate, and a calendar that aligns with the interests of those in Tennessee and beyond. You can read more on this development here.

The equestrian community has come together in a powerful show of support for UK rider and trainer Catherine Robinson, who was left permanently blind after a young horse struck her in the face while lunging. Despite the traumatic accident, which caused extensive facial fractures and irreparable damage to her optic nerves, Catherine’s first instinct upon waking in the hospital was to dream big: “I’m going to go to the Paralympics.” A fundraiser set up by her “right-hand woman,” Melissa Stone, has already raised over £90,000 to support her recovery and rehabilitation. You can read the full story and donate here.

The 2025 Monart Sale, which features some top-quality and purpose-bred three-year-old horses each year, is in the books — and the top seller is heading to the U.S.! Joe Pagan, founder of Kentucky Equine Research, purchased MBF Santuro. Bred by MBF Sporthorses and boasting bloodlines by L’Extreme BH (a Canturo son) out of a Casall mare, MBF Santuro impressed with his conformation and movement. He’ll stay in Ireland to be started before heading stateside next summer to begin his eventing career (and Joe is still deciding on which rider will start and produce the horse, so we’ll be waiting eagerly to find out!). With a 73% clearance rate and international buyers spanning from Argentina to Sweden, Monart reported strong demand and rising average prices, marking another successful edition of the all-three-year-old auction. You can view the full sale results here — and don’t forget that the Goresbridge ‘Go For Gold’ Sale kicks off today at 3 p.m. GMT / 10:00 a.m. EST — you can register to bid and view the auction here.

After a devastating January pipe burst flooded the Ontario Veterinary College’s Large Animal Hospital, the equine community responded with extraordinary speed and generosity. The only 24/7 equine surgical facility in Ontario was forced to shut down its operating and recovery suites, but staff set up an emergency facility within 36 hours, performing their first surgery just three days later. Thanks to community support and over $130,000 in donations (and counting), the crisis became a catalyst for long-overdue renovations. One operating room is already back in action, with another reopening soon. You can read the full story on the community united here.

The 2026 edition will run May 15–17, taking over the historical weekend formerly held by Chatsworth and Floors Castle. Did you know? Extra hay keeps horses warm in cold weather! A sedentary mature horse will need 2% more high-quality forage for every degree the temperature falls below the lower critical temperature. (For clipped horses, the critical temperature is 41°F (5°C). For horses with a thick winter coat, critical temperature is 18°F (-8°C)). Small or older horses will be less tolerant of cold temperatures.

Josephine’s a handy horse to have in events like this, having also specialized in the Grand Prix show jumping ring with Holly. She’s a third-generation homebred Arab/Appaloosa/Thoroughbred/Canadian Warmblood who also evented to the 3* level, making her a hot tip to win it all tonight. It’s a two-round competition, with the best cumulative score taking the honors. Holly will be under threat from fellow Canadians Waylon Roberts (riding Penny Rowland’s Lakeside Park) and Jessie Phoenix (riding Penny Rowland’s ESI Nixon). Guest rider Harry Meade finished up the evening eighth riding Avery Tallman’s Young Rider partner, BDE Olympic Royale.

The FEI’s proposed update to the blood rule is raising major questions across Europe, particularly in Germany, where animal welfare is constitutionally protected. Under the new rule, minor instances of visible blood would no longer lead to automatic disqualification, but instead could result in a warning, unless repeated. While the FEI says this is part of a broader Equine Welfare Strategy, critics argue the change undermines the principle that horse welfare must always come before competitive or commercial interests. German law may even prevent the rule’s application nationally due to strict animal welfare statutes, and the German Equestrian Federation (FN) has already issued strong criticism. With the reputation of the sport and its social license under increasing scrutiny, this revision is sure to remain a hot topic. You can read a deeper dive in this piece from Alicia Zimmer, a legal trainee and avid equestrian, here.

In the latest “Center Aisle” column on Practical Horseman, respected trainer and judge Holly Hugo-Vidal breaks down the proper sequence of aids — leg, voice, spur, and stick — and explains why clarity and timing are key when correcting a horse. No matter the issue, Holly emphasizes staying methodical, not emotional, and always tailoring your correction to the horse’s level and the situation at hand. Read more here.

In a powerful personal essay for Horse Network, Jamie Sindell captures a truth many in the equestrian world feel but rarely voice: it’s not the horses that break our hearts, it’s the people. From misrepresented horses to broken promises and a heartbreaking moment with her daughter, Jamie lays bare the emotional cost of trying to do right in a sport where not everyone plays fair. But even through betrayal and burnout, she finds her answer: we don’t quit. Not when we can be the good ones. Not when the horses need us most. Read the full story here.

As the 2025 FEI General Assembly approaches, Equerry / Co’s Christine Bjerkan explores the growing tension between public perception and rider reality in international equestrian sport. In her latest deep dive, she examines how welfare-led reforms have progressed—from protective headgear mandates to the Equine Welfare Action Plan—but notes that without authentic athlete inclusion, policy risks becoming performative rather than practical. Drawing comparisons with FIFA and Formula 1, Christine calls for a new era of collaborative governance, where riders are treated not just as competitors but as co-creators of the sport’s future. Read the full essay here, and don’t forget that this year’s FEI General Assembly will be live streamed from Hong Kong on November 7. Check your local times, but more information can be found here.
