Monday News and Notes from Fleeceworks

While the best young horses in Europe were competing for top honors in France this weekend, I was watching my 6-year-old Thoroughbred complete his first Novice horse trials at a local event. He finished on his dressage score and his catch rider said he was easy. I can’t ask for much more than that! #proudmom

Monday Video: Lauren Sumner and Crossfire on course at Hagyard Midsouth CCI*.

Finally home! And our much anticipated #teamCROSSFIRE GoPro video of Hagyard Midsouth Three Day Event & Team Challenge XC is ready to upload. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I did riding! Basically, my game plan was to point him in the general direction of the flags, and say “whoaaaaa” lol 🙂

I’ve had a long trip home to reflect on the weekend. And I know I have already said it. But I am SO proud of Eddie. This was definitely the toughest CCI* track I have done, including Ella’s previous runs. It was consistently maxed, and very technical. It proved to cause quite a bit of trouble. But for the first time in my riding career, there was nothing that stood out to me as a concern upon walking. I felt so prepared for this event, and I genuinely believe I am sitting on the best XC horse I will ever have the privilege to ride. Truth be told, my biggest concern was if I would be able to contain his enthusiasm in time to turn to approach the first combo at the brush water. After that, it was point and shoot. We had the quickest time of the day, but for good reasons. He was efficient, rode tight lines, and bold to EVERY fence on course. He is so freaking quick on his feet and athletic.

He is THE best, Can’t wait for #teamCROSSFIRE 2018!!!

To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

With the FEI World Breeding Eventing Championships for six and seven year olds taking place this week at Le Lion d’Angers in France (click here for EN’s Coverage), we’re sticking with the theme and spotlighting young prospects aged six and seven. Which one catches your eye?

Cooper. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

6 yr old Chestnut 16.2 OTTB Gelding, Fun/Serious Competition Horse for Ambitious Rider

Lovely mover, stylish and powerful jumper, brave, clever and thoughtful. This is a real-deal horse! Excellent temperament, hacks alone and in company, clips, ties, hauls. no vices. Has full xrays within the year.

Raced, retired sound, and has had a light summer due to owner’s bum knee. Fit and ready to compete. Has been to several schooling shows-same horse away from home.

Exceptionally well bred to event: Mr.Prospector, Woodman, Carson City. This horse is amateur friendly but would be exceptional for a young rider looking to head up the ladder to big things but working with a budget. Located in southern Maine.

Mo. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Big, brave gelding

6 yo imported Canadian Warmblood gelding. 17 hh. Mo is well schooled on the flat and over fences. Very brave with plenty of scope. Has competed up to 1.20 m show jumping in Florida and is ready to be back out competing with his new rider.

Brave enough to event and will easily move up the levels. Stands well for the farrier, vet etc. He’s also good on the trails and off the farm. A pleasure to work with and is big enough for a tall rider or man. Very motivated sale prior to winter. Located in Maryland.

Charlie. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Talented, flashy and consistent training level packer with bright future

Charlie (Lagerfeld) is a super talented 6 year old 16h German Sport Horse that is solid at the training level and ready to move up to preliminary with the talent and scope for more. Imported from Germany last year, he’s established himself quickly as a safe and reliable mount that always catches the judges eye.

Uncomplicated enough for a young rider or amateur and would make a perfect horse for a young rider to aim for a top placing at young riders next year and beyond. Owner loves this horse to death and is only selling due to changing life circumstances.

Access to his extensive PPE done in Germany last year. No soundness issues or lameness, no vices. He’s super easy. Hacks out bareback. Can be on the back burner or the front burner, he’s the same horse day after day whether at home or a show. Located in Pennsylvania.

Harp 54. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Training Level Eventer With Scope for More!

Harp 54 – 2010, 16.2H, Chestnut Thoroughbred Gelding. Harp is a talented young eventer that has experience through Training level that shows scope for more. He’s easy to make round and very brave to the jumps.

A complete “puppy dog” in the barn has made him a total favorite with team, in addition to his impeccable ground manners. Harp would be best suited for a junior, young rider or adult amateur rider. Located in Pennsylvania.

Laddie. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Flashy, unraced TB currently going Novice, 1* potential!

16.1 hh 7 yo TB gelding. Never raced, no soundness issues, no vices. Extremely attractive horse. Has gotten some ribbons at recognized Novice this summer and has done a schooling Training HT.

Consistently coursing 3’3 with lead changes, jumps in VERY good form, has schooled some Prelim. Ready to go training with a capable rider. Super easy in the barn and very sweet, easy keeper and same at shows as he is at home.

Not hot and will take a joke to the fences, but is a sensitive ride so does require a confident rider because he look to his rider for confidence. Hacks out alone, super simple to frame up. Sadly for sale as owner doesn’t have time for two horses.

Would be great for a confident teenager or amateur adult who is looking for a longterm partner to move up the levels with. Located in Massachusetts.

Red Dirt Racer. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Eventing Prospect!

Red Dirt Racer (Dirt) has been slowly restarted since he retired from the race track, to start a new career in Eventing. Dirt is a 2010 TB Gelding that is athletic and willing. He is full of personality, and behaves himself at shows and off property.

Currently he is competing/schooling beginner novice/novice, and does all 3-phases in a snaffle. Dirt is very sound, loads, clips, ties, and stands for the vet/farrier. No previous injuries. X-rays available. Located in Georgia.

Long Live the Long Format: Waredaca Three-Day First Horse Inspection Snapshots

Waredaca’s October horse trials is a popular fall destination for eventers who still long to gallop steeplechase, trot roads and tracks, and experience the thrill of the classic long-format.

The event hosts a Novice Three-Day and Training Three-Day alongside their Beginner Novice through Preliminary Horse Trials. It is a week full of fun, education and horsemanship.

A special Sportsmanship Award will be given this year in honor of the late Jim Baker, who passed away unexpectedly last spring. Jim was an active volunteer and strong supporter of Area II Adult Riders.

The Classic Three-Day begins of course with the first horse inspection. Check out some of the well turned out pairs in the photo gallery below, courtesy of GRC Photo and Waredaca.

Leading the Training Three-Day after today’s dressage is Margaret Myers and Sonja Twiford’s 11-year-old Thoroughbred Paint gelding, Arikara, on a score of 28.6. At the top of the Novice Three-Day leaderboard is Kathleen Cannon and her 9-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, Tribal Prospect, on an impressive 26.4.

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Le Lion D’Angers … Line Dancers?

The Mondial du Lion, or FEI World Breeding Eventing Championships at Le Lion d’Angers, is coming up this week in France. We’ve got four North Americans slated to compete and a star-studded line-up of horse and rider combinations from around the world.

It’s no secret that the Europeans know how to put on a stellar event, with world-class courses, endless shopping, food trucks and beer gardens galore, and fun activities for kids. Often there are also interesting demonstrations to entertain the audience between classes.

Le Lion is no exception to this rule. Let’s take a look back at last year’s competition in this highlight video, complete with random and frequent appearances of plaid-wearing line dancers. What might they come up with this year?

Ponies are trending! We’ve had several posted for sale in the last few weeks and they’re all kid friendly! (Editor’s note: Adulting-on-a-pony is en vogue, too.) Which one will you pack up and take home?

Woody. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Wonderful Event or Pony Club Pony

Woody is a wonderful boy and a super addition to any barn! He has a “Yes ma’am, I can do it!”, personality and is a straightforward, reliable ride. Woody is a great mover with a balanced stride and is a beautiful and brave jumper. Not spooky – no buck, rear, bolt. Same pony at home or away.

He won his first event on his dressage score out of ten horses (recognized horse trials at starter level – went HC). He has schooled ditches, banks, water, etc. with no problem. Great in or out of the arena. Super on trails with others or alone. Easy keeper and great with other horses. This would be such a fun guy for a kid or small adult – he’s a blast! Located in South Carolina.

Ain’t Miss Behavin’. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Irish SportHorse/Welsh Pony

Ain’t Miss Behavin’ is a beautiful 11yr 13.3H Irish/welsh sport horse. She has taught my daughter how to EVENT at the USEA level, fox hunt and compete in the Hunter-Jumper ring. She has also taken her to many pony club rating, rallies and pony club Festival and has been a SUPERSTAR.

Miss B has her USEF pony card and is registered with USHJA and USEA. She would make someone a great dressage, eventer, foxhunter, hunter or pony club mount for a child or small adult. Located in Michigan.

Amarillo. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Extraordinary Pony Eventer For Sale

Proudly offered for sale. This special horse is available to the right home and rider combination. Amarillo is 12 yrs old, 14.1 hh, Welsh-cross, Palomino gelding. This small package with a huge heart has successfully taken his junior rider from Beg Novice to their first CIC 1*, 2016. Their list of achievements is too long to list.

This little power house is all one would want for a junior rider – flashy on the flat, point and shoot on cross country and careful in the show jump ring. “Milo” would be an ideal Novice/Training packer for a talented junior. He is permanently carded at 14.1 3/4 h (e.g., lifelong qualification for USHJA in the pony division). His current rider has sadly outgrown him and is off to college. He has been a special part of our lives. Located in Pennsylvania.

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: The Feeling You Get When You Hug Your Horse

We’d do anything for our horses. Buy them new shoes when are own are falling apart. Feed them top of the line grain and supplements but grab fast food for ourselves. We spend countless dollars on their comfort and happiness and we do it all with a smile. Because what they give us in return is priceless.

The feeling you get when you hug your horse

It’s why we do what we do.

Fight back against colic and digestive upset

Neigh-Lox Advanced provides a scientifically advanced blend of ingredients that work synergistically to maintain your horse’s digestive tract in peak condition by supporting both the gastrointestinal tissues and the beneficial bacteria that populate the gut. Maintaining a healthy digestive tract reduces the risk of colonic and gastric ulcers, colic, laminitis related to hind-gut acidosis, and oxidative stress that damages digestive tract tissues themselves. Horses with a well-balanced GI tract have good appetites, absorb more nutrients from their diets, maintain a strong immune system, and stay healthier.

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: A ‘Sound of Silence’ Freestyle

Prepare to be mesmerized. During Dressage at Devon last week, Jacqueline Brooks and D Niro, an 18-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding owned by Mary Brooks and Brookhaven Dressage Inc., performed an FEI Grand Prix Freestyle to Disturbed’s powerful cover of the Simon and Garfunkle original, “The Sound of Silence.”

The performance earned them a 70.875 for third place. More notably, their performance was a contrast of the typical freestyle, which is often a mix of different songs or sounds spliced together to match a pattern.

Jacqueline worked with a professional to adjust the tempo of the music but otherwise performed through an entire song that spoke to the heart and soul of the audience and the performer herself.

If you’d like to know more about the development of this freestyle and the story behind it, Heels Down Magazine got the scoop: “I Think It’s the Future” Jacquie Brooks Brings Innovative Freestyle to Dressage at Devon.

Who Jumped It Best? Stable View Monster Corner Edition

You couldn’t help but be impressed walking up to the open corner at fence 14 at the Stable View Oktoberfest Advanced Horse Trials. The angle of the front rail is extreme and the ground line (the narrow block on the left) seems miles away from the landing side. However, the generous placement of mums on take-off softens it a tad bit.

While this fence may have seemed impossibly wide, but there were few problems and horses jumped it very well. There was no option, but riders had a couple of choices should they have a stop or runout. Most re-approached and used the flowers as a ground line, reducing the width of the corner but wasting precious seconds on the clock. Another rider went through the wide side of the corner and jumped the flagged rail as an upright.

It was such an exciting fence to watch, and now it’s your turn to decide Who Jumped It Best? We realize not every photo shows every horse at the same moment in the air, but we’re showing you the best frame for each horse. For this edition, we ask that you consider style, form and “wow factor” when you choose the best overall picture.

Vote for your favorite in the poll at the bottom of this post. Go Eventing.

Boyd Martin and Crackerjack Claim $15,000 Victory in Stable View Advanced

Boyd Martin and Crackerjack. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

Boyd Martin enjoyed a big pay day at the second annual Stable View Oktoberfest Advanced Horse Trials. With four finishing in the money in the Advanced division and one more in Intermediate, his rides earned nearly $30,000.

As expected, cross country time penalties shuffled the leaderboard significantly today. Boyd and Lucy Boynton Lie’s 14-year-old Thoroughbred Crackerjack posted the fastest time with just 3.6 penalties for a final score of 34.3. They moved up from seventh place to win the divisionas our resident crystal ball predicteda happy result as they look towards Pau CCI4*.

“The Stable View course is very similar to Pau. It’s a very technical, twisty track that has lots of mounds and corners and narrows,” Boyd said. “Crackers can be a little difficult to ride in that type of event so I’m glad he went down there. He was a little bit of a handful in the first section of the course but then he settled down.”

The track at Stable View was unique because the beginning and end wound through a forest of pine trees, with a beautiful gallop through an open field in the middle. While the course wasn’t huge, Boyd said, it rode difficult because of the placement of jumps.

“You have to really know your course well. There are so many trees and other level fences around. You definitely need to really walk your course and understand which side of what tree and what line you’ll take,” he said.

“It feels like you’re riding a lot faster than you really are; the fences are coming up quickly. It’s good for your riding because it makes it more intense and puts more pressure on. It really tests the horse’s rideability. You have to have a horse that is light in the hand and can turn quickly and maneuver well. That all comes down to training.”

Boyd praised Captain Mark Phillips for his design, saying his courses in the last two years have been the best of his whole career. “We’re very lucky to have him move to America and design courses for us. He’s got a lot of experience. He knows what works and what won’t. He puts a lot of pressure on the riders to get better and the horses to learn.”

Katie Ruppel and Houdini. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

Katie Ruppel and her own 13-year-old Thoroughbred Houdini’s round started off a little hairy when a spectator wandered into the path of the second fence and she was forced to make a circle. Such a thing could fluster even the most experienced rider, but not these two!

“I figured it would all be handled at the end so Hewie and I just pressed on,” Katie said. “While I would have loved to beat Boyd at his own place, I’m thrilled with my little scrapper this weekend.”

Officials witnessed the detour early on and adjusted Katie’s time accordingly. With 6.2 time penalties added they finished in second on 36.6. As for Katie’s plans for the $12,000 paycheck: “Now I can buy (Hewie) more minis!”

Katie has her eyes on the Jockey Club International in Ocala to close out the season and hopes to cross Badminton off her bucket list next spring.

“There’s a big Thoroughbred prize (at Ocala) that’s his to lose, and we love that event,” she said. “I think I’ll just keep running him carefully at CIC and Advanced and save him for the big stuff. He’s not getting any younger and I don’t want to use him up.”

Boyd blazed around clear with his other three Advanced rides. Christine Turner’s 10-year-old Trakehner Tsetserleg added 6.0 time penalties to finish third on 37.0. Blackfoot Mystery, a 13-year-old Thoroughbred owned by the Blackfoot Mystery Syndicate, added 9.6 time and finishing fifth on 38.1. Shamwari Syndicate’s 15-year-old Hanoverian Shamwari 4 took home sixth with 10.0 time to add for 39.9.

“I’ve taken my time bringing (Blackfoot Mystery and Shamwari) back this year. I didn’t do too much with them at the beginning of the year. I tried to get them fit this summer,” Boyd said. “They are two legend horses to ride cross country. I tried to be a little bit cautious with them this year to save them up for next year. They ripped around the course but I didn’t push them. I’m thrilled to be riding those two. They are very special and they both gave me great round.”

Clayton Fredericks and FE Ophelia, a 10-year-old Zweibrucker owned by Diana Crawford and Hugh Wrigley, were second after show jumping but 11.6 time penalties on cross country dropped them to fourth on 37.8. Ellen Doughty-Hume and her and Alistair Hume’s 15-year-old Thoroughbred/Holsteiner Sir Oberon matched Boyd and Crackerjack’s quick time, adding 3.6 penalties for seventh on 40.4 in their second run since Rolex.

Tamra Smith and Judith McSwain’s 8-year-old Holsteiner mare Fleeceworks Royal was clear with 12.0 time to finish 8th on 43.9. Caroline Martin and Danger Mouse had a cracking clear round with 12.8 time to add and finishing ninth on 49.6. Kelly Beaver will be celebrating tonight as she and her 17-year-old Thoroughbred Sempre Fino jumped a clear round for tenth place in their first Advanced horse trial.

Caroline Martin and her own 8-year-old Zangersheide Cristano Z posted one of two double-clear rounds in the Intermediate division to win on their dressage score of 23.5. The only other double-clear came from Hallie Coon and Shanon Baker’s 11-year-old Thoroughbred Lansdowne, who finished fourth on 30.8.

Boyd and Christine Turner’s 10-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare Kyra added 3.2 time penalties top move up from fourth to second on 29.9. Ariel Grald and Annie Eldridge’s 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse Leamore Master Plan also added 3.2 time to finish third on a 30.1.

I don’t suppose organizers Barry and Cyndy Olliff have control of the weather but it really could not have been better this weekend (it felt a bit like fall finally, appropriate for Oktoberfest!). In addition to a beautiful setting and exciting courses, it was great to see many locals out enjoying the competition and shopping in the trade fair.

“I do think this is new era in American eventing,” Boyd said, reflecting on the competition in Aiken and last weekend’s Arena Eventing exhibition in Central Park. “You have entrepreneurs like Barry and Mark (Bellissimo) that are doing a great service to American eventing, people that are making the sport so exciting and lifting the bar and standard of all events. We are very lucky to be pro event riders at this time in the U.S. It’s gone beyond what I thought possible.”

Stable View Advanced Cross Country Course Walk

16B / 17 – Stable View

Cross country is well under way here at the second annual Stable View Advanced Oktoberfest Horse Trials. The Advanced division is set to begin at noon EST. Be sure you tune in to the EQTV live stream to watch the action with commentary from our own Jenni Autry and guests at this link.

I took a walk around Captain Mark Phillips’ Advanced course this morning. It’s a cool day with a brisk breeze, perfect for the horses even if it makes our eyes water a bit. The footing feels really fantastic and the whole course, built by Eric Bull, is beautifully presented and decorated for fall.

Many riders are using Stable View as a final prep for Fair Hill International coming up in two weeks. But whether they plan to kick into high gear or have an easy canter around, horses and riders have to be on the ball from start to finish.

The first several fences are in the trees before the track opens up and adds in some galloping stretches and the first of eight combinations on course. Then it’s back into the trees where the fences are strategically placed to check that the riders have walked the course carefully and are confident in their lines.

You may feel like you’re flying when you’re galloping between pines, but the feeling can be deceiving and we will likely see plenty of time penalties today. Quite a few difficult turns will also require immense accuracy and control, which could surprise some of the less experienced combinations.

The light this morning cast some awkward shadows on a few fences, which you’ll see in the gallery below. However, the sun will be high in the sky by the time our first Advanced horse leaves the start box.

We’ll be back with a full report this afternoon so keep it locked on EN. Go Eventing.

Tune in to watch and listen to commentary from EN’s own Jenni Autry, plus special guests including Kyle Carter. Watch the action in the player above right here in this post or click here to watch on the Stable View website.

Time will be tough to catch today on Captain Mark Phillip’s cross country course, and with many of the Advanced and Intermediate horses prepping for Fair Hill International, every pair will have a different game plan out there today.

Heather Morris and Charlie Tango, a 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse owned by the Team Express Group, lead the Advanced division on a two-phase score of 25.4. They are followed closely by the next nine combinations, all within 10 points of the lead.

Heather told EN yesterday that she’s using Stable View as a fitness run for Fair Hill. “I’m going to give it a crack but if someone goes faster and beats me, so be it.”

Stable View Advanced Oktoberfest Horse Trials has quickly become a premier fall event, with top courses, fantastic footing and a hearty $65,000 on the line. But it’s not just the top dogs that stand to earn some money back. Prize money is awarded to ALL levels, from Advanced to Beginner Novice. Learn more at www.stableviewfarm.com.

Heather Morris and Charlie Tango Jump to Stable View Oktoberfest Advanced Lead

Heather Morris and Charlie Tango. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

It was a beautiful, breezy day in Aiken, SC at the Stable View Advanced Oktoberfest Horse Trials. Competitors from Advanced to Beginner Novice tackled Richard Jeffery’s show jumping course which had a strong impact on scores. In the Advanced division, just 34% were clear and inside the time, while 38% were fault-free in the Intermediate.

Heather Morris and Team Express Group’s 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse Charlie Tango jumped clear and inside the time to take the lead in the Advanced division, moving up from second after dressage with a 25.4. “His dressage was pretty good. He had some moments, some wobbles, but he got a 10 on his rein back,” Heather said.

This is Charlie’s second year at the Advanced level and he has consistently produced first and second place finishes at both national and international competitions. He is nearly always fault-free in show jumping and is a cross country machine.

“He’s coming up but he’s quite young still. He’s barn sour which on this course will be tricky because we’re stabled in the main barn and fence six goes right next to his stall. I’m hoping he’s growing up but I have to keep that in the back of my head,” Heather said.

Heather and Charlie are getting ready for the CCI3* at Fair Hill International and will look to have a solid run on Captain Mark Phillips’ cross country course tomorrow.

“Tamie and I have been practicing some cross country questions and I’m hoping he’s ready and will go out with his game face on and prove he’s grown up and is ready for this. I’m going to give it a crack but if someone goes faster and beats me, so be it.”

“The course is good. There are five jumps in first minute so it’s quite derby-like at the beginning but then opens up and flows quite well. The time will be hard to make so you’re going to see some people run for time but a lot will go out and use it as a good prep for Fair Hill.”

Clayton Fredericks and FE Ophelia. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

Clayton Fredericks (AUS) and Diana Crawford and Hugh Wrigley’s FE Ophelia are second after the first two phases. A fault-free round moved them up from fourth on a 26.3.

Clayton got the ride on the 10-year-old Zweibrucker mare last year and have earned several top two-star placings. They moved up to the three-star level at Great Meadow and most recently finished 15th at the Plantation Field CIC3*. They are entered in the CCI3* at Fair Hill.

Boyd Martin was the overnight leader with the Shamwari Syndicate’s 15-year-old Hanoverian Shamwari 4, but a rail and one time penalty dropped them down to fourth place. Yet Boyd still has four horses in the top eighth in the Advanced division.

Boyd’s Rio Olympic Games mount Blackfoot Mystery, a 13-year-old Thoroughbred owned by the Blackfoot Mystery Syndicate, moved up to third after a double-clear round to sit on 28.5. Lucy Boynton Lie’s 14-year-old Thoroughbred Crackerjack and Christine Turner’s 10-year-old Trakehner Tsetserleg were also clear and fast, moving into seventh and eighth place respectively.

Tamie Smith has two horses in the top nine. Kevin Baumgardner’s 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood Wembley had one rail to drop to fifth on 30.0, and Judith McSwain’s 8-year-old Holsteiner mare Fleeceworks Royal added four penalties for ninth place on 31.9.

Katie Ruppel and her 13-year-old Thoroughbred Houdini went double clear to move up one place to sixth on 30.2. Joe Meyer and Clip Clop, a 14-year-old Irish Sport Horse owned by Joe and Theresa and Madison Foote, were also clear and fast to tie Courtney Cooper and her homebred Irish Sport Horse/NZ Thoroughbred cross Who’s A Star for tenth on 34.6.

Boyd Martin and Blackfoot Mystery. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

We have a number of combinations making their Advanced level debut here at Stable View. Kerry Torrey and her 11-year-old Hanoverian Zumba are off to a good start at this level with a dressage score of 37.5 and a double-clear show jumping round. They are currently in 14th place in the division.

Kelley Beaver and her 17-year-old Thoroughbred Sempre Fino had a single rail in their first Advanced. Shanon Baker and her 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse Ballingowan Zeal jumped a lovely clear with five time penalties.

Canadian Young Rider Shelby Brost is no stranger to Advanced but is competing for the first time at the level with Crimson, a 14-year-old Thoroughbred mare who carried Shelby to two medals at NAJYRC: bronze in the 2015 one-star and gold in the 2016 two-star.

Shelby is saving her Crimson’s legs for the Ocala Jockey Club International in November so will they will not run cross country tomorrow. However, they were one of the few to jump clear and fast today in show jumping and are placed 15th on 37.9.

Shelby Brost and Crimson. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

Looking to the 40-horse Intermediate division, Caroline Martin leads the way with her own 8-year-old Zangersheide Cristano Z. They move on to cross country still on their dressage score of 23.5.

In second is Boyd Martin and the Long Island T Syndicate’s 11-year-old Oldenburg/Thoroughbred Long Island T with a 23.8. Boyd is also fourth with Christine Turner’s 10-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare Kyra and tied for fifth with On Cue, an 11-year-old Anglo mare also owned by Christine. Third place is held by Leslie Law and his and Carmen Anderson’s 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse Call the Law on a 24.4.

Scores are close at the top and time penalties will undoubtedly be a factor on cross country tomorrow. The footing is fabulous and the course is very spectator friendly. We’re looking forward to a great day tomorrow.

Barry and Cyndy Olliff brought the first Advanced Horse Trials to Aiken two years ago and developed a premier fall event with an enticing atmosphere. If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by the bustling trade fair which features tack shops and artists of all kinds. There are food trucks galore and the craft beer is flowing.

If you can’t make it in person, mark your calendar for next year. Meanwhile, tune in to watch cross country on the EQTV live stream starting at 10:20 a.m. Sunday. EN’s own Jenni Autry is commentating and she’s lining up special guests as we speak! If you missed today’s show jumping, the replay is already available!

“58 Clips of Lainey Ashker Kicking My Butt”

Lainey Ashker could give George Morris a run for his money when it comes to meme-worthy one-liners. Student Samantha Ensinger put together a montage of Lainey-isms from a recent dressage lesson and we are absolutely rolling with laughter.

Samantha is 16 years old and she’s had Rocko, a 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood cross for about 9 months. They evented at Starter level this summer and hope to move up to Beginner Novice soon.

“I really loved Lainey’s teaching style. She was very honest, while still being extremely encouraging,” Samantha said. “She pushed us both to our best for every second of the ride and made us all laugh a few times with those phrases that flow so naturally from her personality. I look forward to the next time she comes back to Ohio for a clinic. I might be the first in line to ride with her again!”

We love how Lainey kept her student laughing. Lainey said, “Believe it or not I actually had a million more positive things to say about this pair! Must’ve been a long lesson.”

Humor goes a long way when it comes to keeping students engaged in learning. Here are a few more motivating Lainey-isms:

Here’s some more “Lainey-isms” courtesy of Kyana Sazegari who hosts one of my awesome California clinics! #anythinggoes #didshereallyjustsaythat #ohnoshedidnt

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Five FEI Event Horses

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

Experience is everything in our sport. If you’re looking for a horse that has reached the FEI level and is looking for a new partner to continue on with an international career, here are five horses for sale that have competed at the one-star level and up.

Thomas. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

A Proper Gentleman aka Thomas

Thomas is a 2005, 16.3-17.0 hand flashy bay English Sport Horse gelding. His sire is Selle Francais and his dame is English TB. USEA#- 166201. Thomas has competed in multiple 1* events as well as Prelim competitions. Before he was imported he competed in CIC* and CIC** events overseas.

He was imported by Julie Richards and we purchased him in 2015. Thomas is an easy going guy with a great attitude. He’s a very easy keeper with great ground manners. He tends to be more on the calm side but willing to do what you ask. He would make a great horse for an amateur wanting to start slow and move up or someone who wants experience at the upper levels.

He has the scope for Intermediate but due to rider injuries he hasn’t competed intermediate yet. He consistently scores mid to low 30’s and upper 20’s. Located in Kentucky.

Frenchfort Cobra. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Junior/ eventer

Frenchfort cobra. 8-yr-old mare competing at EI100 Level in Ireland now going up to 1* level will go to 2* no problem. Going clear every time jumping at 1.20 v easy to do eventer would make lovely junior horse. SIRE Cobra Dam Thornfield Calli. This mare has been professionally produced by an international event rider in Ireland, Joanne Corish Springwell Stables Ballylibernagh Bridgetown Co Wexford. Open to any vetting. Veterinary and transport can all be arranged. I have sold an event horse to America last year so I can get reference if needed. Located in Ireland.

Chet the Jet. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

CIC* and Intermediate gelding

Chet the Jet. A 2008, 16.3 hh chestnut Holsteiner gelding. With remarkable bloodlines top and bottom. Sire is Rex Grannus, who himself was a multi discipline talent, competing in Grand Prix show jumping, Advanced level dressage with Dr. Reiner Klimke, and the Puissance jumpers. His dam’s sire is the legendary Thoroughbred stallion Napur, who competed in Grand Prix show jumping with Hap Hansen.

Chet has just arrived to us to help find his next partner. Chet would be very suitable for a Young Rider looking to do the Championships next year, or a competitive A/A looking for a capable partner for Prelim/ Intermediate. Chet has two and a half seasons at the Preliminary level, including a 4th place finish in the CIC* at Fresno this spring. Chet and his adult amateur owner/rider made two starts at the Intermediate level with success.

Chet shows a consistent record, and a very willing attitude toward his job. With 3 good paces, and a good temperament at the shows, Chet is consistently hitting the low 30s to high 20s in dressage. With over 60%TB blood, Chet has a tremendous gallop and great conditioning. With all the scope and bravery to go with a good jumping technique, he finds the cross country well with in his capacity. He would make an exciting horse for someone looking for an experienced partner at a great age. Located in Idaho.

Darla Doll. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Training packer with Intermediate miles

Darla Doll is a 15 yr old OTTB mare. She has extensive Preliminary/1* experience including Virginia CCI* and NAJYRC 1* both going double clear xc. Recent results include winning the IP at Flying Cross Horse Trials. Darla has taken her current young rider from Novice to Intermediate and also helped her obtain her USPC ‘A’ rating. She would be best suited for a young rider looking to gain experience at Training and even take them to prelim with some maintenance. Priced at 35K and currently. Located in Kentucky.

College Point BLVD. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Experienced 1* and Intermediate TB gelding

College Point BLVD “Collie” is a 2004, 16.2 hands Thoroughbred gelding that successfully competed at the CCI* and Intermediate level. He completed the Land Rover Jaguar Bromont in 2016 finishing 3rd in the young rider 1* division and 18th overall.

Fancy in the dressage phase scoring mid 20’s or low 30’s, super honest on cross country and a careful jumper. He would make a super horse for an up and coming young rider or someone who wants more experience at the level. Had a light 2017 show season because owner was busy with full time work and school, but he is fit and ready to go! Located in Montreal.

Monday News and Notes from Fleeceworks

Spotted at Sundance Farm: A real live unicorn! Maia Ramberg and Nessie after a magical win in the Starter division. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

I grew up riding and competing in Area III, occasionally venturing out to Area VIII or II. These days I have the pleasure of traveling to events around the country and meeting horses, riders and organizers in other Areas. It’s easy to get in the habit of competing at the same events over and over, especially when they are close to home, but I encourage you to get out there and try a new venue. You may like what you see!

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Lease for Love

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

At the lesson barn where my mom and I started eventing, the owner frequently gave students the opportunity to “lease a horse for love,” alleviating some of the feed and shavings bills on her end and giving a client the chance to experience semi-ownership with less pressure and financial commitment than a full on purchase. Not to mention the horse had a person to call their own for a while.

There are many reasons an owner may choose to lease out a horse: too many horses to ride and not enough time; owner is in school/working/having a baby/broke; rider has bigger ambitions than the horse does. Whatever the reason, the owner typically isn’t ready to sell but doesn’t want the horse to be a pasture ornament. So, you get a ride, the horse has a job, the owner is happy. It’s a win/win/win.

Here are three horses listed for a possible lease.

Riley. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Riley-Thoroughbred Prelim Mare, Sale or Lease

Super cute mover, scores always in the 30’s with a serious love for jumping. This girl has a heart of gold and eats up the cross country course. Would pack around a lower level rider but loves a bigger challenge. Would be great for a Young Rider, and has the potential to move up to Intermediate. Clips, loads and no vices. Prefers to live outside all the time. Ran but no injuries. Would consider a year lease. Located in Maryland.

Sparky. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

For Lease: Training Level Eventer

Rare leasing opportunity for a confidence-building and competitive eventer. Sparky is a 7 yr old, 16.1 h TB who recently made a confident move up to Training and has talent for more. 2016 Midsouth Eventing and Dressage Association Adult Year End Award Winner and was also on Area 8 Novice Adult Amateur Leaderboard. Suitable for Starter to CCI*.

He possesses lovely gaits, a scopey and careful jump and bravery to spare. He is fun and easy to ride and goes in a snaffle. Relaxed and quiet at home and away; in company or alone. Ships, clips, etc without issue. Was leased for summer; change in circumstances requires new lease home. Will consider sale to right home. Located in New York.

Palermo. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

SUPER-TALENTED NOVICE EVENTER!

Palermo 9yo 16.2h scopey Novice level eventer, schooling Prelim. He has also shown to Training level in dressage (schooling First Level), and jumped the meters at hunter/jumper shows (schooling 1.20).

He has a sense of humor and endures being dressed up by the barn kids! He prefers a quiet rider, and would love to have his own special person to bond with. Palermo is amateur friendly, but is not a beginner’s horse. He has also been used in our lesson program with our intermediate riders.

He is up to date with everything, and is great for the farrier and vet (although he’s rather frightened of needles!). Palermo is registered with the Oldenburg society (DE433339824908), USEF/USDF/USEA. Lease option may be considered.

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Add a Little Color to Your Collection

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. For a few years I was riding an Appaloosa pony mare, and everywhere we went she turned heads. “She’s so cute!” was the usual cry as strangers leaned in to give her a scratch. She loved the attention, of course, and she tried extra hard to be adorable in public.

If you’re looking to add a little color to your equine collection but still want the athleticism required for sport, here’s four horses for sale with their own unique patterns to match their personalities!

Wapz Masterpiece. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Get SPOTTED – Future Event Prospect Extrodinaire

Event Prospect Extraordinaire! Be BOLD with color and talent on this coming 2 y/o SPORTALOOSA GELDING! Wapz Masterpiece aka Armani is from eventers on both sides. On the sires side, Wapuzzan…Wap-Appaloosa lines are well known for their o/f talent, good minds, longevity and soundness.

He has many siblings that are eventing, winning at Prelim and one was aimed for Advanced before being purchased. Currently his 6 y/o brother is tied 2nd in the NATION at BN! His TB dam, Charming Devil by Ayes Turn lines (evented to Prelim herself) and is the sister to Katilin Spurlock’s Rolex mount Expedience! The dam’s TB b’lines are known for producing good eventers. The TB side gives him finesse and forward endurance! This young gelding is a great combination of bloodlines, conformation, mind and color! He is UP Potential or is sure to be fun and successful at any lower level as well.

Armani has had 120 days of professional in-hand training to keep him well handled and experienced growing up. He has already shown twice in-hand, qualifying for the Championship round each time even against WB’s! He already hauls great and settles in well at shows. He has a goofy-quirky fun personality and grabs attention everywhere he goes for his stunning looks. He is very smart and learns quickly. Armani is currently standing 15.1 as a yearling. He is expected to mature 16.2 hh.

We are seeking a driven, committed rider who wants a lifetime future partner to have amazing experiences with. Someone who will cherish making a bond with Armani and who will have the focus to really drive their partnership as far as they dare to dream. *However first and foremost we want Armani and his person to be happy – it’s not all about showing and winning, that is just his ability if you want to take him there* But we do feel he is bred for and will be happiest in a performance home/match.

Armani is ApHC registered and eligible for AWS and Sportaloosa International, SHOC etc. He also has lifetime membership to USEF/USDF. Located in North Carolina.

Canso de la Mancha. Photo by Brant Gamma via Sport Horse Nation.

Looking for its new partner: Confirmed Intermediate horse with CIC/CCI2* experience.

Canso de la Mancha: 10 y.o. gelding (Spring 2007), Tall 16’1, TB (light) body type.

Made the top three at every event attended at the Preliminary level, except at his second start where he finished 4th. Won his second Intermediate event leading straight from dressage, in the Open division.

Rides the three phases in a snaffle. The type of horse who is calm for dressage, then lights up for the XC and Stadium while staying very connected to his rider. Very honest and careful, locks to the fence. A real pleasure to work with.

Would be best suited for an Amateur or a Junior wanting to move up the levels up to Intermediate, with a safe, fun and competitive partner. This horse will never let you down if you take the time to create a bond with him. He could also make a fun jumper or dressage partner. He just came back from a jumping show where he won the Mini Prix. All eyes were on him, as usual! He also finished season champion in Dressage level 2 last year.

Cleanest medical record – never injured, not injected, no medication of any sort. Always fresh and happy to work the day after cross-country. The horse is entered for three events this fall: an Intermediate and a CIC2* in September, and a CCI2* in October.

Serious inquiries only. This horse is sold because his owner thinks he maxed at 2* and will not be comfortable at 3*. She prefers finding him a good home where he will stay within his comfort zone and make his next rider confident and competitive in any show ring. Located in Canada.

Appaloosa Sport Horse gelding by Wapuzzan

Black Appaloosa Sport Horse. 3.5 years old. This guy will be ready to show in the spring. Great mind, kind and forgiving. Super easy to work with in all ways. Has been exposed to a lot without being over used as a youngster. Has in hand show experience in FEH. Ground driving as a yearling, and started lightly under saddle at 2. This summer has done a couple of schooling shows. Has even foxhunted once, and was a super star. No problems with ditches, banks, water. Nice mover. Super athletic and scopey – potential for upper level. Get to know him now and hit the ground running in the spring. Great opportunity to get a young horse with a sane mind and sound body! More videos and photos available. Located in Iowa.

Sky. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Pinto Friesian -Flashy Sport Horse

“Sky ” -turned out with more of the warm blood look than strict Friesian. He turns black bay pinto for 6 mos of the year during the cooler months. Most agreeable horse I’ve ever owned and every ride is a pleasure. Doing training level dressage well and does more advanced movements of leg yield, shoulder in, etc. He is the cool WB push ride vs tense, tight backed hot horses.

Superb trail horse has been ridden alone/grp on numerous ,scenic horse park trails throughout Colorado. May be one of those rare horses that could fox hunt calmly. V sound.. can go barefoot the whole year. Easy keeper, likes attention on the crossties. Tolerates llama right next to him in the pasture and multiple goats running under his legs and jumping off tack trunks right next to him.

For sale because he’s only ridden 3-4 x month and he should have been already been shown extensively. Can get an 8 on his sweeping, elastic walk and also stretch circles that each get coefficient scores x 2 at shows. The steady horse in dressage classes for AA and Jrs usually wins. Should also have been doing scenic trail riding all over Colorado.

This conformation pic is preliminary..doesn’t totally show the very correct conformation he has. I choose this picture of him in the winter when he came right out of the muddy pasture because it showed how trim he can get. He is not as trim now re: mos of lush pasture. Monday News and Notes from Fleeceworks

Roslyn Johnson, a member of the Cross Syndicate, stated after Kim and Cross’s big win at Blenheim, “This does our hearts good during such an emotional time in the USA…thank you, Kim Severson, for making us all very, very, proud.” I think we can all agree with that.

Monday News and Notes:

Don’t miss this excellent recap from Doug Payne on his trip to Blenheim with Vandiver. “I was lucky enough to receive a travel grant from the USET Foundation and Jacqueline Mars for Vandiver to compete at Blenheim. I can’t thank them enough. During every international trip a lot is learned and hopefully I can apply what was gained here to earn a US team medal in the near future!”  [Doug Payne Recaps Blenheim]

Helen “Penny” Chenery, the charismatic owner of racing legend Secretariat, died yesterday following complications from a stroke. Penny loved Thoroughbreds and championed women in business and sports. Even after Secretariat retired, she remained active in the Thoroughbred industry through the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, Jockey Club, Secretariat Foundation and more. Emma Shackell was just 16 when she laid eyes on Alan, a small 3-year-old colt at an auction. Fearing he’d go to slaughter, she bid on him and won. He proved to be a difficult horse with a bad napping and rearing habit, sending Emma off to the hospital more than once. But she persevered and they have their sights set on a three-star next season. [‘I thought he’d go for meat’]

Livestock owners are still feeling the effects of the recent hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the recovery process will be long and trying. Many people and organizations have pitched in to help any way they can. Thoroughbred Charities of America has set up a grant for Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare to provide hay to horses on the U.S. Virgin Islands. [TCA Provides Emergency Grant]

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Tallyho! Six Event Horses with Foxhunting Experience

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

Foxhunting is a sport that was synonymous with eventing as a cross training opportunity. While these days we have a tendency to want to bubble wrap our event horses head to toe, there are many eventers who still take advantage of the education afforded in the hunt field.

Recently I started taking my young event horse out with hounds and he seems to love it. I can already see where the experience will benefit him on cross country as he learns to bravely but smartly navigate different terrains and ground conditions while remaining focused and balanced.

Looking to find a horse you can event and hunt? Here are six horses with experience in both sports.

Amateur Friendly Eventer and Fox Hunter

Seasoned Eventer and Foxhunter OTTB 15.3 hand 8 year old gelding offered for sale, Tea Party O’Nine, fondly referred to as Patriot.

Patriot has evented successfully through training level and hunted a full season with the Arapahoe Hunt in Colorado. In the hunt field, he can go from first flight to hill topping with ease. Patriot is reliable and straightforward to the jumps, hacks out alone or in a group. He will do ditches, water, etc, and does not look at colorful show jumping fences.

He is the same horse away at events as he is at home. This gelding has an “in your pocket” personality and is a kind and willing worker. He is sound and sane with no vices and loads, clips, ties like a gentleman, he is a farrier and veterinarian favorite. Ideal home would be adult amateur or junior rider looking for a low level eventer, fox hunter, or all-around pleasure horse. Located in Pennsylvania.

Fantastic event pony for sale!

“Happy Harry” is a 14 hand pinto pony. He has successfully competed at several unrecognized Beginner Novice events, bringing home a 4th at the July Bucks County horse trials. Easy and careful, Harry is point and shoot to the fences. He is also a fun foxhunter, and would make a fantastic all around pony club pony.

He does enjoy being in a program, the fitter he gets the more fun he becomes. Not suitable for a very small child or baby beginner. Will continue to be shown until sold, moving up to Novice at the next Fair Hill! Located in Maryland.

16.2hh Wonderful Grey Thoroughbred Gelding

Manuel is a super nice 16. 2hh 10 year old OTTB. He is very kind and willing, but has not yet had a lot of show or hunting experience. This horse has scope galore, but is not for a beginner as he often over-jumps. Manuel is super quiet when in a consistent program. He has the potential to make a superb foxhunter.

This is a lovely horse, priced to sell at no fault of his own. His owner was working too much to see him often and is now relocating to a different state. Price is negotiable for a quick sale and perfect home. Perfect, loving home for this wonderful horse is a MUST! Located in Virginia.

Aurelia. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Whipper-In and first flight foxhunter

Aurelia is a 15.3 hand 8 year old homebred and unraced registered Thoroughbred dark bay mare. We bred and raised her, and she is from the family of the great event sire, Sadler’s Wells.

Aurelia has a season of foxhunting under her belt, being used by one of our students as a whipper-in. She was also hunted in the first field by our student’s timid adult amateur mother. They both claim that there is not a horse better made for the hunt field. She is great with the hounds, stands quietly, never acts up, and of course, is a great jumper!

She has never been given any sort of sedation for any riding/hunting, ever. She schools solid training level dressage and has schooled up to 3’6″ in gymnastics. She has evented at the beginner novice level and is very quiet and sensible in all situations, both on the farm, off the farm, under saddle, on the ground, in the hunt field or the show ring.

Snaffle ride in all circumstances, never pulls. She is beautiful and has great legs and feet. She has a comfortable, very balanced canter to sit. She is sound and healthy. Located in Virginia.

Inntrigue. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Winning Novice Oldenburg Sport Horse

Inntrigue is a lovely 9 year Oldenburg sport horse who has found her niche in the eventing world! She is out of Art Deco and Scenic Skyline. I purchased her 8 months ago for my future prelim horse, but due to grad school/moving/job changes I am forced to sell her already.

This mare LOVES jumping! She never stops, and she’s a cross country machine. She loves water, ditches, banks and she always cleans up in stadium. She won her first Open Novice with a 28.3! She is very adjustable and has her auto changes. I have taken her fox hunting, on numerous trail rides, and she is the exact same in any environment. She ties, stands for farrier, loads, clips- you name it!

This mare has a lot of potential and with the right rider she will go very far! She’s not mareish, and is currently turned out with two geldings. Inntrigue truly is a super special mare, but she is not for a beginner. She can get forward in stadium and she requires very quiet hands in dressage. Located in Georgia.

Fancy 16.1+ 9 yr old liver chestnut TB gelding. $7500

Movie is sensible for a amateur or junior rider looking to Event, Foxhound or show jumpers. He has schooled ditches, banks and water with no hesitation and is ready to compete. He is smart and deliberate at fences and is wonderful on the flat. He also has fox hunted quite a bit and is lovely out in the field. Rides in a snaffle. Sound and healthy with full set of 2 year old X-rays available. Located in Maryland.
