April Fool! USEF to Officially Recognize Competitive Hobbyhorse

Chinch has been a hobbyhorse enthusiast for no short length of time. Here he is on course at Rebecca Farm in 2015.

EN has confirmed a recent decision by the US Equestrian Federation to make hobbyhorsing the newest USEF-recognized equestrian sport and to assist in the formation of an affiliate to be known as Hobbyhorse North America.

Popularized in Finland, hobbyhorse competitions closely resemble combined training events. Stick horses–poles attached to model horse heads–are ‘ridden’ in both dressage and show jumping tests and the performance scored by a panel of judges.

Competitive hobbyhorse is growing in popularity around Europe, and after a competition video went viral, the rest of the world quickly became familiar with the concept. Sadly, the internet went bonkers that something so kitschy could possibly exist and proceeded to mercilessly ridicule the young ladies and gentlemen involved. The USEF, however, had a different response.

“This is an incredible opportunity to increase participation in equestrian sports. By recognizing hobbyhorsing, we’re reaching an entirely new demographic of people who love horses but maybe don’t have the financial means to own and compete them,” USEF President Murray Kessler said.

“As we all know, real horses are extremely time consuming and expensive. However, stick horses require basically no upkeep and almost anyone can afford to buy, make and maintain one. We see recognizing hobbyhorsing as an official sport under the USEF umbrella as a way to expand our audience and allow many more horse enthusiasts to ‘Join the Joy.'”

In an article for National Post, hobbyhorse coach Taija Turkki is quoted to say, “It’s very bizarre for other people to see, for the first time especially, this kind of stuff … Because they think we think the horse is alive, which we do not. We understand that it’s dead, made of fabric and all that.”

An estimated 10,000 people in Finland are said to be involved in hobbyhorsing. And the activity means something different for each of them. Alisa Aarniomaki said hobbyhorsing is like therapy and has helped her cope with her parent’s recent divorce.

“I’ve gone through lots of trouble and I’m still struggling with some issues. It has helped me a great deal that I can occasionally just go galloping into the woods with my friends. It somehow balances my mind,” Alisa said.

And what horse person, hobby or otherwise, can’t relate to the incredible healing power of horses? We here at Nation Media fully support the development of hobbyhorsing and welcome it with open arms to the USEF table. In case you missed it, check out Kristin Kovatch’s editorial In Defense of Competitive Hobbyhorse on our sister site, Horse Nation.

Hobbyhorsing has already made its way across the pond from Finland to North America. The Tryon International Equestrian Center in Tryon, NC hosted a hobbyhorse competition series last fall and plans to renew the series for summer 2018 ahead of the FEI World Equestrian Games.

Marketed as a “safe, fun and affordable way to ride horses,” the American Hobby Horse Series is for children 14 and under and offers multiple levels from cross rails to 2’6″. Special awards for Best Hobby Horse and Best Turned Out Rider are given each week and competitors try to accumulate points to qualify for the series championship.

“Hobbyhorsing is the next big thing,” said Mark Bellissimo, Managing Partner of Tryon Equestrian Partners. “It teaches kids about hard work and competition and expands their imagination through crafting and visualization. Plus, it’s great exercise and parents like it because it’s way safer than riding real horses.

“With the large expense and space requirements of equestrian competitions, especially eventing, there’s a real possibility that this is the future of the sport. Who knows, maybe one day TIEC will be hosting the FEI World Hobbyhorse Games.”

2018 will be a pilot year for the USEF Hobbyhorse program as the affiliate is created and organizers bid for competition dates. We know Chinch is especially excited, so stay tuned for the unveiling of our new sister site, Hobbyhorse Nation.

……April Fool! USEF is not actually recognizing competitive hobbyhorse, but we love the sport and what it offers participants. Go hobbyhorsing!

Working Student Opportunities with Courtney Cooper, C Square Farm!

Courtney Cooper and the C Square Farm team are back in Pennsylvania after enjoying a very successful winter season in Aiken and we are looking forward to competing extensively in Area II. We are looking to add another working student (or two!) to our program. Preference is given to individuals wanting to stay for a minimum of 6 months who are looking for a rigorous, educationally geared apprenticeship.

Our working students learn about training, sales, horsemanship, and breeding, and they also get plenty of opportunities to compete and ride themselves. Our winter working students brought home several blue ribbons of their own, (one is actually 3rd in the country on a horse C Square Farm lent to her) in addition to attending top events such as Carolina International.

We value our working students and treat them as members of our team with regular lessons, regular riding, days off, board for their horse and housing in a new, beautiful, and safe apartment complete with WIFI.

In addition to the benefits listed above we also do team dinners, and have our working students watch lessons with Courtney and top pros, including Boyd and Silva Martin and Richard Picken. We also strive to teach our working students life lessons; such as goal setting and planning for their future and are happy to stay involved with them individually after leaving our program.

Working Student Position

Housing may or may not be included (again varies by situation of applicant). Own transportation and drivers license is required. 6 month minimum commitment. Located in New York.

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Carolina International’s Pirate Cove

Ahoy, matey! The Ian Stark-designed cross country course at Carolina International last weekend was true challenge for horses and riders at all levels. Shiver me timbers! The Pirate’s Cove water complex was a particular test and a few landlubbers walked right off the plank to feed the fish take a cold, unwanted bath in the sea pool. Batten down the hatches and watch the Intermediate freebooters attack this hanging log to corner combination, brought to you by the buccaneers at RNS Video Media. Avast ye!

Ingrid Klimke’s Best Advice

Ingrid Klimke and Horseware Hale Bob. FEI/Jon Stroud Photo.

German eventing medalist Ingrid Klimke taught “A Through the Levels Dressage & Eventing Masterclass” last weekend in Cloverdale B.C., Canada at The Cloverdale Agriplex. Here is some of her best advice from the session, courtesy of Tara Louise Lambie.

Quiet with your hand. Use your fist not your whole arm.

Keep your horse out in front of you not underneath you.

All fingers have to be closed.

Shoulder-hip-heel one line.

Half-halts are the most important. Feet, leg, then weight into your hand.

Do not give with the outside. The outside always stays. Only the inside gives.

Your half-halt has to be more interesting than everything around your horse.

Ride the circle round.

Put the spur away.

Half-halt before the canter. Always let them sit so the wither comes up.

Diagonal aids. The outside rein holds and the inside leg pushes to the outside.

Supple the outside ribs.

Hands together at the wither. Arm is front of the hip. Play with the fist. Arm up from the elbow. Hands in front of the wither. Elbows at your side. Close your fist.

Keep the rhythm with your rising.

Fix your hand. Don’t lay your hand. Thumb up.

Take give. Don’t hold or pull too long.

The thumbs are your roof.

Sink into the saddle, hands down, fingers closed.

You are not a passenger. You are responsible for your horse’s ride.

Stretch. And more stretching. It’s good for him and he will like it.

Slow down your posting.

Give give give the rein. Give more.

Put your reins away. Let them slip away.

Take give, take give.

Active from behind. More active.

Canter in the light seat.

In the horse world, work schedules and days off aren’t dictated by normal weekends and holiday calendars. The same goes for freelance journalists. I often forget about upcoming holidays until I see a relevant social media post reminding me about, for instance, St. Patrick’s Day. So here’s a selection of Irish horses and ponies for sale that I might have featured in last week’s Sport Horse Nation Spotlight had I remembered the occasion in time.

Confirmed first level dressage and schooling some second level movements. Has spent the last year training as a hunter with a 10 year old and has been taking care of her. Quiet enough for an experienced kid but fun enough for a small adult. Would be a great move up pony that you could have fun on for years to come.

Goes on trails, through water, fine alone or with company, trailers quiet. Has been cross country schooling and shows great talent for it. Could easily go training if not more. Super jump! Same off property and at shows as he is at home. Could excel in hunters, jumpers, dressage or eventing. An all around great pony. Family is heart broken to part with him but moving out of the country. Located in California.

Equestrian journalists and photographers spend many weekends reporting and documenting the progress of horses and riders around the country. Based on the time spent on the road working, it’s not often we get the chance to compete ourselves. It’s been so fun for us to watch the developing partnership of EN’s Jenni Autry and Jimmie Schramm’s Bellamy through the winter season. You inspire us that we can indeed have it all! Way to go, you two! Superstars!

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: 5 More Thoroughbreds Ready for Their Next Chapter

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

Last week we featured five Thoroughbreds ready for new heights. This week we’re featuring five more!

Hieronymus B. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Athletic OTTB with loads of untapped potential

Hieronymus B. is an 8 year old, 16.1 hand, OTTB gelding. Completed the novice at Rocking Horse III with 3 solid phases, including a very impressive xc run. Definitely has the talent and scope for more! Not for a green rider as he is a sensitive horse. Hiro is an athletic and very willing horse with a sweet personality. A pleasure to have in the barn. In a professional program this season-tuned up and ready to move up the levels! Could also be competitive in the jumper ring. Located in Florida.

Rossini’s Concerto. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Rossini’s Concerto – fun, safe ottb gelding

Rossini’s Concerto, 2010 bay 16.1hh ottb gelding by Rossini out of Key Approval, USEA#171232. Ross is an honest, safe gelding perfect for either an amateur or young rider looking for a horse that is sound, fit, and ready to compete. He is a straightforward, supple ride on the flat with nice movement.

Ross is a super fun horse to jump as he is careful and quiet with great adjustability. His bravery and athleticism makes him a xc machine as he has never had a refusal on or off property. Hacks out on the buckle with no spin/bolt. Sweet and easy to handle on the ground at home and at shows; loads, vets, shoes, clips, cross ties like a pro. Finished top 3 in 3/5 novices in 2017 and is ready to move up. Located in Georgia.

Philanthromister. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Talented 6yr old TB w/ upper level potential – “Philanthromister”

“Phil” is one seriously special OTTB! 6yrs old, 16.2 – He is competing successfully at Novice level and in his first USEA event he produced a 24 dressage and jumped a classy double clear. He competes in all three phases in a nathe snaffle and is very relaxed and polite at the show and at home.

This horse has serious talent to go on up the levels, but he is also a very easy ride and totally genuine, and would suit an amateur/ young rider as well as a professional. He has very clean legs, excellent feet and bone and has been an absolute pleasure to produce. He will easily go up the levels in eventing and is sure to become someones horse of a lifetime! Located in Florida.

Lion. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Talented Young Event Horse

Lion is a talented 16.1hh thoroughbred gelding. He moves well, has a great brain, and a very willing personality. He has spent the last 2 winter seasons successfully competing and schooling in Aiken, South Carolina. He has 3 great gates and is very broke and well schooled on the flat. Lion is very willing and showing scope and promise over the jumps. He is a great cross country horse as he’s very adjustable and brave. Located in Ontario.

Vino. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Athletic SCOPEY 6 yo 16h OTTB Bay Tb Gelding

Blame It On Vino (aka Vinny) Restarted by 4* Eventer Ashley Johnson. Training with 4* trainer, Jennie Jarnstrom who rode him at his 1st Horse Trial at Rocking Horse in February 2018 in OBN. Vinny’s dressage score of 33.3, double clear-stadium, and a couple green moments on XC that kept him out of the ribbons. He will be showing at Rocking Horse Spring Horse Trial with Jennie Jarnstrom.

He is full bodied, very athletic, brave to the jumps, great work ethic, quiet mind, with lead changes. Jennie believes he easily has the scope to do Training and potentially more. Jumps banks up and down, ditches, water, and trakehners. Vinny has great feet, barefoot and very SOUND. Passed recent vetting and Xrays. Loads, clips, bathes and stands tied till you need him. Located in Florida.

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Five Thoroughbreds Ready for New Heights

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

The Thoroughbred is a versatile, trainable, athletic breed and one of the most common found on course in eventing. Here are five for sale–both raced and unraced–with bright careers ahead of them. All they need is for someone to show them the way!

Vanlismar. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Vanlismar 5 y/o 16h TB mare

“V” is an unraced 16h 5 year old bay Thoroughbred mare. She is attractive, well put together, and has a soft mouth. V goes in a Nathe both on the flat and over fences. In 2017, she finished 7th in the Exmoor Eventing YEH 4 year old division along with successful runs at both the Beginner Novice and Novice levels. (View her record here) V is an enthusiastic and willing jumper; however, she is a sensitive ride and would be happiest with an educated rider who can help her learn to relax. Located in Massachusetts.

Country Ranger. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Fancy, Unraced 5 yr old TB with record through Novice and capable of much more!

Country Ranger aka “Reggie” is a 5 year old Thoroughbred gelding with Danzig and Unbridled lines. He finished 21st out of 97 in the Eventing division in the 2017 TB Makeover!! Since then he has competed through Novice and has the potential to move up the levels. Reggie is extremely easy on the ground with a kind demeanor.

Trailers, ties, stands for farrier, etc. Hacks out alone or in a group (especially enjoys bareback hacks with a halter). The same horse away from the farm. He is a quick learner with good instincts over fences. Really enjoys his job out on cross country and goes in a snaffle for all 3 phases.

He’s an above average mover and will be very competitive on the flat once he gets more experience in the ring. He has gotten a jump start on his training while in Florida this winter and is ready to continue up the levels with his new person! Located in Florida.

Nolan. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

2011 16.2h Throughbred Eventer/Jumper with tons of Potiential

Lovely eventer or show jumper. Nolan is a 16.2, 2011 ottb. He has been successfully eventing through the novice level and has the scope and ability to go up the levels. A genuine guy that is brave cross country and will jump anything you point him at. Nolan is an eye-catching mover with three lovely gaits and natural flying lead changes.

He is best suited for a confident rider that can give him the guidance and support he needs as he is still learning. Nolan loads, clips, bathes, stands for the farrier, crossties, ect. all extremely well. He is a very lovable big guy that is looking for his next rider to fulfill the loads of potential he has. Located in Ohio.

Deo Volente. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Deo Volente: Perfect Eventing Schoolmaster!

Deo Valente: 2004 15.3h chestnut Hanoverian/Thoroughbred gelding. “Davie” is the perfect schoolmaster to learn on! He was the Beginner Novice Champion at the 2017 American Eventing Championships on a dressage score of 19.8! This lovely gelding is kind and uncomplicated, with a good lead change and correct way of going. His sweet personality makes him perfectly suited to a timid rider, whether it be a junior, young rider of adult amateur. He is easy to be around and would make a wonderful addition to anyone’s barn. Located in Georgia.

Nikki. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Super Safe Young Prospect

JODI HEMRY EVENTING PRESENTS: NIKKI, Breed: Thoroughbred, Color: Bay mare, HEIGHT: 16.0 HH, Age: 5 year old, $5,000. Nikki is a talented young prospect that would excel in eventing or the jumpers. Nikki has had a great foundation and is very well mannered on the ground and in the saddle.

She is currently in professional training and excels with each ride. Nikki is extremely easy to teach and has a great work ethic. She has three nice gaits and a great jump. She has been started over stadium jumps and cross country jumps. She is very willing and easy to ride to the jumps. She enjoys having a job and gets better with each ride.

Nikki is great out on the trails with or without company. She has great ground manners, as she ties, clips, loads, ect. She is a lovely horse to be around riding or on the ground. She would be an excellent horse for an amateur or young adult to bring along, as she is a quiet, safe, easy horse to ride. Nikki is a talented young horse looking to start her career! Located in Georgia.

Equi-Jewel®

The horse that matters to you matters to Kentucky Performance Products; that is why you can count on them to provide supplements that meet the challenges facing your horse.

Fight back against an energy crisis that can impact condition and performance.

Equi-Jewel® is a high-fat, low starch and sugar formula developed to safely meet the energy needs of your horse. Whether you have a hard keeper that needs extra calories to maintain his weight, or a top performance horse that needs cool energy to perform at her peak, Equi-Jewel can meet your horse’s needs. Equi-Jewel reduces the risk of digestive upset, supports optimal muscle function, maintains stamina, and helps horses recover faster after hard work, all while providing the calories your horse needs to thrive.

The fat found in rice bran is an extraordinary source of dietary energy. In fact, fat contains more than two times the energy that carbohydrates and proteins do, thereby fueling horses more efficiently. Fat is considered a “cool” feedstuff because it does not cause the hormone spikes that lead to excitability. Adding Equi-Jewel is rice bran to your horse’s diet allows you to decrease the amount of starchy concentrates (grains) you feed, reducing the risk of colic and laminitis resulting from grain overload. Equi-Jewel is an excellent source of calories for horses on low sugar and starch diets. The horse that matters to you matters to us®.

Not sure which horse supplement best meets your horse’s needs? Kentucky Performance Products, LLC is here to help. Call 859-873- 2974 or visit KPPusa.com.

Monday News and Notes from Fleeceworks

And guess who forgot her test…… TWICE.

Posted by Heather Morris on Saturday, March 3, 2018

Forget your test, miss a jump on cross country, enter the ring before the bell, forget your number or armband (I have done all of these). It happens to the best of us–including pros like Tamie Smith–but live and learn, I suppose! I’ll never forget the time my mom cantered right by the finish flags on cross country but never went through them. She was eliminated but so elated with a great round, it didn’t matter. Years later it makes for a great story, and ever since she and I have always included the finish flags on our course walks.

What’s In Your Arena? Presented by Attwood: Simple Gymnastics to Start the Season

What’s in Your Ring? is an EN series sponsored by Attwood Equestrian Surfaces in which riders share their favorite jumping exercises. It’s easy to get stuck in a training rut, and we hope this will inspire you with fresh ideas that you can take home and incorporate into your own programs.

Everyone deserves a break now and then, including our hard-working horses. It’s not unusual for eventers to pull shoes, throw the horses out and let them have a well-earned month or so off during winter. While this is great for their mental and physical health, your horse may have lost quite a bit of fitness on vacation, which is important to remember when legging back up for the spring season.

My own young horse got the entire month of December and most of January off. As a result of a nice long break, he got good and dirty, plumped up a bit and might have even grown a little. When I stuck him on the lunge one sunny January day to see where we were, he looked darn good.

We got back to work, taking is slow and steady. For the last month we have picked our way through the mud, taking long walks around the pastures, on the trails in the woods, up and down hills. Then we sandwiched short bursts of trot work over ground poles in the arena between our long hacks. Finally, last week, we started doing a tiny bit of canter work. As I consider a return to jumping over the next couple of weeks, I don’t want to ask too much too soon.

A deep dive in the Evention TV archives unearthed this simple, three-part gymnastics exercise that incorporates trot poles, a low, easy bounce and a one-stride to a vertical. This is a great grid to get the jumping muscles working, get your horse thinking about where he’s putting his feet and allow you to practice your position. It can be built up or down for any level and jumps added to it as time goes on.

While the eventing season is in full swing in Florida, South Carolina and California, many areas of the country are still stuck in the indoor or just getting back in the saddle after a long winter. As you and your horse start back to work, remember everyone’s muscles have had a long rest, so build up the workload slowly and we’ll see you out eventing soon!

Equestrians vs. ‘Beast From the East’

Storm Emma led to high level snow and wind warnings by the UK’s national weather service (Met Office) late last week and into the weekend, and the conditions were severe enough to delay the start of the 2018 British Eventing season.

The unusually cold temperatures in the United Kingdom and Ireland are a result of the destructive ‘Beast from the East’ that has marched across Europe from Siberia, leaving both beauty and chaos in its wake.

Equestrians, however, are a resilient bunch. It doesn’t matter what the weather is doing; the horses still need to be fed and watered and the barn mucked out. We’re glad to see our friends across the pond keeping a cheerful face on and making light of the situation wherever they can.

Rocking Horse Winter III Intermediate Score Report

Three Intermediate divisions have wrapped up at the Rocking Horse Winter 3 Horse Trials in Altoona, FL on this sunny–albeit windy–weekend.

On Friday’s one-day format competition, Lynn Symansky won the 25-horse Open Intermediate division riding Mary Ann Ghadban’s 14-year-old Holsteiner mare, Under Suspection. The pair led from start to finish, adding only 2.8 cross country time penalties to their dressage score of 27.5. Lynn also picked up fourth with the Donner Syndicate’s RF Cool Play, sixth with Tim and Nina Gardner’s FE Lifestyle and eighth with her own SpectraVET Tempranillo.

Kurt Martin and the GSC Syndicate’s 12-year-old Holsteiner mare, Anna Bella, had a great first run back since placing fifth at the Ocala Jockey Club CIC3*, finishing on their dressage score of 31.1 for second place. They were followed by Sharon White‘s 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse, Cooley On Show, in third on 33.9. Rachel Wilks and her own 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse, Great Expectations, wrapped up the top five on 40.7.

In the Open Intermediate two-day format division, Caroline Martin and Sherrie Martin’s 15-year-old Irish Sport Horse, Pebbly Maximus, haven’t run since Boekelo CCI3* last October. They came back in top form, adding nothing to their dressage score of 32.7 to take the win.

Cornelia Dorr claimed the next two positions with her 12-year-old Zweibrucker, Sir Patico MH (32.9), and her 13-year-old Rheinlander, Louis M (36.0). Joe Meyer finished fourth and fifth with Madison Foote’s 15-year-old Irish Sport Horse, Clip Clop (38.6), and Denise Rath’s 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse, Jay of Diamonds (42.1).

The winners of Intermediate Rider were Kimberly Keeton, DVM and her and Hope Thomas’s 8-year-old Thoroughbred, Keysoe. They were fourth after dressage with a 37.9 and while they lowered a single rail, they produced one of only two double clear cross country rounds in the division to move into the top spot.

Cecilia Lundberg and Kathleen Lundberg’s 12-year-old Oldenburg, July’s Wild Idea, earned the only other fault-free cross country round in the division to take home second on 39.5. Haley Carspecken and her 12-year-old Holsteiner cross, Center Stage, moved all the way up from eighth after dressage to finish third on 45.9 in their first Intermediate appearance as a pair.

Hannah Leahey and Cassinova, a 9-year-old Holsteiner owned by Jackey Leahey, finished fourth with a 47.7 followed by Ryan Keefe and Rumsey Keefe’s 18-year-old New Zealand Thoroughbred, Flintstar, with 49.7.

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Treat Yourself to a New Used Saddle

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

When it comes to saddles, a brand or style that works for one horse might not work for another. The same goes for riders; not everyone will like the same features. If you’re on the hunt for new equipment, check out the Tack and Equipment category page on Sport Horse Nation. Here are the five most recent listings.

Santis. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Santis Dressage Saddle

This top selling saddle features an extra soft seat that is slightly wider for the seat bones with a moderate twist. The front blocks are on Velcro and can be adjusted for the individual rider. Uniquely designed panels add stability to the saddle and increase the horse’s comfort. The tree and the flocked panels can be customized for the horse for a precise fit. KB saddles are hand made to order in England.

This saddle had up-swept panels & are perfect for the shorter back or more sensitive horse. Nice channel width and depth means it can even fit that high withered horse! The seat is stamped 17 1/2, measures an 18, is very comfortable, placing the rider in the perfect position at just the right balance point.

The Y girting system and wool flocked panels mean comfort for your horse. This saddle is adjustable, and the wool flocking is ample. This saddle has been used less than a year as I have been unable to ride. Located in Florida.

Black Country. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

17.5 MW BC Vinici Tex Eventer Jump Saddle

From Black Country’s Web Site: Endorsed by Ralph Hill, USA. A favourite in the US, this exciting saddle is specifically targeted at event riders. The forwardness of the flap and the long sloping seat allow plenty of room behind the rider to move around in the saddle and have support when leaning back over drop fences – no more sitting on the cantle! The tree is designed as such that the extra length in the seat is not reflected in the panels.

The girthing system lies neatly above the cushioned sweat flap so as to avoid any discomfort. Small triangular blocks are standard. This saddle is designed with pure wool panels to help shock absorption when landing and also allowing the horse freedom to stride out without restriction on the shoulders. Located in North Carolina.

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Racehorses, Jockeys Go Cross Country Schooling

Cross Country Schooling

Cross-country schooling is a new addition to the Trainee Jockey Course and this week 4 Trainees got to try out this challenge. This was a new experience for our horses that demanded a high standard of horsemanship from our Trainees. This training develops good hands, an independent seat and confidence in a rider. Go to our website to find out how to apply for the Trainee Jockey Course. The best foundation in racing. #training #education #horsemanship #nextgeneration

Posted by RACE on Friday, February 23, 2018

What if your OTTB already had some cross country experience prior to retiring from a racing career? How might race jockeys benefit from cross country training?
Cross country schooling is a new addition to the Trainee Jockey Course at the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE) in Kildare, Ireland. In this video, four jockeys in training introduce a group of horses to natural obstacles including logs, ditches, water crossings and more.
“This was a new experience for our horses that demanded a high standard of horsemanship from our Trainees. This training develops good hands, an independent seat and confidence in a rider,” RACE stated in the video description.
The Racing Academy and Centre of Education is a non-profit educational initiative whose mission is to be a world-leading centre for training and education within the Thoroughbred racing industry. Learn more about RACE on Facebook or visit their website.

What’s in Your Ring? is an EN series sponsored by Attwood Equestrian Surfaces in which riders share their favorite jumping exercises. It’s easy to get stuck in a training rut, and we hope this will inspire you with fresh ideas that you can take home and incorporate into your own programs.

Ground poles are a super way to keep your winter indoor work interesting as well as leg up for the upcoming season. Whether you set up trot or canter ground poles, they are a low impact way to build your horse’s strength, improve his gaits and tune up your own eye for distances.

Tristan the Wonder Horse is a pro at ground poles (check out more of his amazing footwork on YouTube). In his latest video, Tristan demonstrates a relatively simple trot work exercise that is easy to set up and adjust for any sized arena. Enjoy!
