Emily King Leads Blenheim CCI3* After Day One, Phillip Dutton in Top 10

Emily King was the last to go for the day in the dressage phase of the CCI3* at Blenheim, and she stole the show aboard Brookleigh in their CCI3* debut together, scoring a 35.4 to take the lead. William Fox-Pitt had a hold on the top two placings up to that point with Freddie Mac on a 38.0 and Seacookie on a 41.8, and he will take second and third overnight. Who will be up to the challenge tomorrow?

Emily had a frightening fall from Brookleigh in their last outing at Junior Championships, but the pair appear to have come back strong and ready to take on a very competitive field at Blenheim. Emily spoke with PRO after her ride and said she was “over the moon” with her ride today. Mother Mary King is at the event as Emily’s groom, so Emily’s got one of the best riders in the world coaching her along for her first CCI3*.

Jacob Fletcher and Katherine Coleman both rode their tests this afternoon as well. Jacob had a few tense moments in his test but scored a 54.2 to take 23rd place after day one. There was definitely a lot more atmosphere here than any other place I’ve been so he was just a little keen when I picked up canter,” Jacob told PRO after his ride. Domino is certainly keen to get out on cross country on Saturday, and Jacob sounded pleased with his effort today.

Katherine Coleman finds herself a bit farther down the board in 38th after scoring a 63.0, but this event will surely not be a dressage show, and judging by the jog photos, Courage Under Fire is fit and ready to run and jump come cross country day. PRO also took the opportunity to get to know Katherine a bit more after her ride:

Phillip Dutton will have his second ride, Fernhill Fugitive, out tomorrow for the final day of dressage. Be sure to check out PRO’s Facebook page for many more quotes, interviews, and photos from today at Blenheim.
