The only thing better than having a super run around an Advanced on the weekend and coming home with a blue ribbon is when your vet comes out two days after cross country and tells you everything looks great. I’ve had Nyls for eleven years now, and the same vet the entire time. He did the pre-purchase on him as a young’un and has been my rock this whole time. It’s always so important to have a team behind you that knows and appreciates all of your horse’s quirks and idiosyncrasies, and helps you get to the top!

News From Around the Globe:

In news of the craziest of Eventers, Aoife Clark completed Blenheim with a broken neck. She fell from a young horse at Millstreet Horse Trials on the 25th of August, and was suffering some numbness and pain in her neck and head, but attributed it to a pinched nerve and kept on riding. After completing Blenheim CCI3* with Fernhill Adventure, she fell on cross country with her other horse, and ended up having some x-rays. These x-rays revealed that she had fractured two cervical vertebrae. [Event Rider Aoife Clark is Crazy]

Celebrate YOUR amazing veterinarian with the first official National Equine Veterinarian Week with SmartPak! Our friends at SmartPak have teamed up with Henry Schein Animal Health and the Northeast Association of Equine Practitioners (NEAEP) to create the first-ever National Equine Veterinarian Week! This weeklong celebration will be held annually on the third week of September to honor the equine vets who have been with us through thick and thin. Because they’re not just our shoulder to cry on, but they’re also our cheerleaders from the sidelines, and our tireless 5pm-on-a-sunday emergency friends. [National Equine Veterinarian Week]

Hot on Horse Nation: 10 Commandments of Being a Barn Cat

Helmet safety isn’t just about wearing one every time you hop on a horse. You’ve seen those commercials talking about replacing your mattress after every eight years—after all, that’s a lot of dead skin cells, dirt, dust mites, etc., that gathers every night. And when it comes to your favorite pair of riding pants, you don’t think twice about replacing them when they’re starting to be worn thin, or maybe showing a little too much wear and tear. But do you even think about how old your helmet is? [Thinking With Your Head About Helmet Safety]

KER ClockIt™ Session of the Week

This week’s KER ClockIt™ Sport session demonstrates how riders can use the app to objectively monitor their horse’s fitness.

This novice-level eventer did two two-minute canter sets after trotting for about ten minutes, which pushed the horse into the yellow zone (80-90% heart rate). The rider noted that she had been doing a lot of trot work prior to this session, but after seeing the heart rate jump during a short canter, she realized she may need to do more cantering to prepare him for competition.

The 80-90% range is the zone where many human athletes train to improve fitness. In this zone, there begins to be a significant level of anaerobic energy generation and blood lactate starts to accumulate.

To see a detailed report like the one above, go to the KER ClockIt website and log in to your account. Once you are signed in, you can view your detailed sessions under the “Sessions” tab.

Don’t forget to share your ClockIt sessions for a chance to win the KER and Eventing Nation Show Us Your Sessions Sweepstakes. Between now and October 28, use the GPS on your KER ClockIt Sport app to draw or write something fun and submit your sessions for chances to win.
