Wednesday News & Notes from Attwood Equestrian Surfaces

Today happens to be Library Shelfie Day, a day in which to honor your book collections by posting a “shelfie” – a picture of your bookshelf – on social media. If you’re reading this, I’d be pretty willing to bet that like me and probably like most equestrians, you have at least a portion of a bookshelf (if not several shelves or even entire bookcases) dedicated to horses.

My small collection is pretty eclectic, mirroring my riding background. I have a number of books about hooves because I’m a total nerd, a nine-year-old copy of the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science which houses my undergraduate thesis (again, nerd – but very proud of it!), some equestrian nonfiction, and a number of tomes attempting to demystify the elusive fine art of dressage. Also, I have a book of photography by Viggo Mortensen (you know, of Hidalgo and Lord of the Rings fame) that I literally forgot all about until just now.

On Friday, August 4th 2017 Erika Wager was breezing a racehorse when she suffered a tragic accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Prior to her accident, Erika had been working as an exercise rider and assistant trainer at Belmont Park, galloping up to 16 horses daily. Even though Erika lost the use of her core and legs, she didn’t lose her passion for horses or racing. She’s back in the barn doing everything she used to do around horses and has begun riding Para-Dressage. More recently, she has embarked on a journey to the 2019 Retired Racehorse Thoroughbred Makeover with the most perfect partner: 10-year-old Green Diamond Cat, one of the first horses she galloped and one of the first horses who earned her a win.

Musical Spin (MEDALLIST – HEAVENLY BALLAD, BY TWO PUNCH): 2012 15.3-hand Pennsylvania-bred mare

I know there are a lot of Two Punch fans out there, so here’s one for you! This little mare in a plain brown wrapper doesn’t look like much now, but she’s been a fierce competitor in the past and maybe a change of career will ignite her competitive edge again. Musical Spin was given a nice vacation on the farm last summer and just hasn’t had the same interest in racing since being brought back to the track. Her trainer says she’s a solid citizen around the barn and would love to find her nice home where she can hopefully demonstrate the jumping ability that her grand-sire is known to pass on.

Acharnement (INTO MISCHIEF – EMPRESSIVE LADY, BY EMPIRE MAKER): 2015 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred mare

She’s only 15.3hh, but you sure wouldn’t know it just by looking at that beautiful uphill build and proud neck. Acharnement hasn’t been making a name for herself as a racehorse, but this Empire Maker granddaughter and A.P. Indy great-granddaughter looks ready for another shot at a new sport. This filly is reported to be sound and CANTER volunteers observed nice clean legs and a very polite personality.

Redhot Cheerleader (HAYNESFIELD – CHEER CHEER, BY LORD CARSON): 2014 16.0-hand Kentucky-bred mare

“Red” may very well have the talent to succeed as an eventer. Her jog video shows a nice reaching trot and her connections told the CANTER volunteers who did her photoshoot that she’s demonstrated some scope in the past as well by jumping out of her pasture with a five-foot fence … twice. Not only is she talented, but she’s clearly driven too so potential owners take note!

Monday Video from Total Saddle Fit: 12 DIY Equestrian Life Hacks

We’ve seen a lot of #EventerProblems and #EventerSolutions here on EN, but there’s always room for a few more tips and tricks! Let’s meet Han, and Australian eventer and YouTube vlogger. She and her 9-year-old OTTB Fletch compete at the Equestrian Australia Preliminary level. Han has come up with 12 little tips and tricks to make your life around the barn a little easier.

Here’s what Han has to show us and where you can find them in the video:

  1. Get rubber bit guards over bit cheeks (1:13)
  2. Keep tall boots from sagging without boot trees (2:43)
  3. Quickly set specific jump heights (4:14)
  4. An alternative style of quick release knot (6:04)
  5. Neatly fold blankets so that they lay flat (8:31)
  6. Use a dressage whip as a sweat scraper (9:52)
  7. Add padding to a saddle rack to keep it from indenting your saddle (10:18)
  8. Open a bale of hay when you don’t have a pair of scissors (11:48)
  9. Tie your horse (or a hay bag) to anything safely (12:43)
  10. Easily thread a needle for sewing braids (14:09)
  11. Keep a hoof wrap on a horse in turnout(15:20)

A few weeks ago we shared a video of a runaway filly at Cranbourne Turf Club in Victoria, Australia that quickly went viral amongst the horse-savvy internet population. Not only was the horsemanship of outrider Kevin Wynne and the effort of his mount seriously impressive, but learning that Kevin is a spry 75 years old made the feat all the more astounding.

The Australian website Racing.com which first uploaded the viral video has recently released a follow-up so that we can get to know Kevin and his pony, Woody, a little better. Kevin is proof that just because you get older, it does’t mean you have to slow down. In his own words: “I don’t know how you’re supposed to feel at 75, but I feel fit, happy and I’m still doing everything I’ve ever done quite easy.”

With that in mind, let’s use this week’s OTTB Wishlist presented by Cosequin to take a look at three slightly older OTTBs ready for a second career. Age is just a number, so sky’s the limit for these guys!

American Lion (TIZNOW – STORM TIDE, BY STORM CAT): 2007 16.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Well, it’s not every week that we can say that we’re featuring a horse that ran in the Kentucky Derby. In fact, this is an OTTB Wishlist first! American Lion ran in the 2010 Kentucky Derby, which was won by Super Saver, and finished mid-pack. He went on to run two more races the following year before being retired to stand at stud at Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky and later at River Oaks Farm in Oklahoma. He was offered for auction at the Keeneland sale last November and some of his former connections came together to buy him and ensure a soft landing for him. He was recently gelded before coming to New Vocations and can still act a bit studdish around mares. For that reason, he would be suitable for a confident and experienced person. Under saddle “Lion” truly feels like high caliber horse. His future is bright and his potential is unlimited. Plus, how neat would it be to see a former Derby contender at your local horse trials?

Forest Pike (OLD FORESTER – GOLDEN PIKE, BY PIKEPASS): 2012 16.2-hand Ontario-bred mare

This 7-year-old is being offered at an absolute steal of $500! She has retired with no known issues or vices and has been racing consistently since 2015, with her most recent start being this past November so she is an eligible candidate for the 2019 Thoroughbred Makeover. Forest Pike has a nice strong athletic build including a strong shoulder and powerful hindquarters. Her race record can attest to her athleticism too, with over $123,000 earning in 45 career starts.  We’d absolutely love to see this good-looking girl who clearly has much more to offer in a start box someday!

Reggie D (STONESIDER – HEY BABA REBOB, BY MESOPOTAMIA): 2009 16.0-hand New York-bred gelding

They call him “Redhead Reggie”! With 83 starts, Reggie D has certainly earned war horse status. He’s been a good earner for his connections too, topping out at just over $200,000. Reggie’s trainer attests that he has a workmanlike attitude and is also a pleasure to ride and to have in the barn. With so many different experiences under his girth and and been-there-done-that confidence, it sounds like Reggie could be a really fun Thoroughbred Makeover prospect to bring along.

Monday Video Presented by Total Saddle Fit: Back at It in Ocala

Dang, it feels good to be listing the weekend action in our daily News & Notes and to be looking up recent footage from the weekend’s horse trials again! Many areas still have several months of winter to endure, but the 2019 USEA competition season is indeed officially underway. May as well live vicariously through those down south, eh?

David Frechette, otherwise known as TheHorsePesterer, was out in full force over the weekend doing his good works at Majestic Oaks Horse Trials in Ocala, Florida. In addition to a multitude of stadium rounds and XC clips, he also caught Cierra Daratony and Rio de Janeiro‘s entire cross country round.  Cierra and Rio de Janeiro, a 10-year-old Holsteiner X Thoroughbred, delivered the only double clear cross country round amongst their competitors to clinch the win in the Preliminary Rider division. Watch them fly over the Florida sawgrass!

“I clip and I know things” should perhaps be Mika Polniaszek’s new motto! Mika, a Game of Thrones fan and third year veterinary student at Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Veterinary Medicine, kindly shared these photos of her impressive handiwork with us. Mika and her Thoroughbred Brego competed across Area VI from 2010 to 2015 through Training level until the gelding’s retirement from eventing. Brego remains an important part of Mika’s life as she pursues her studies and she has clearly been having some fun with his annual winter clip job! Anyone else participating in the #GameOfClipping? Let us know!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Bragging Rights

Everyone’s gotta have something to brag on their horse about … and we totally support that! Frankly, with OTTBs it’s easy to find something. Whether it’s their lineage, their earnings, their number of races — or even their lack of any of those things!

Here are three available OTTBs, each with their own bragging rights, ready and waiting to start their second careers:

Dawning Sky (SKY CONQUEROR – MARKET VALLEY, BY UNION PLACE): 2014 15.2-hand Saskatchewan-bred mare

Yes, you read that right: Saskatchewan-bred. You don’t come across that too often, so if you want a horse with a unique birthplace to brag about, you’ve got a prime option right here! Despite being a touch on the smaller size at 15.2hh, Dawning Sky is appropriate for a more experienced rider. She’s a mare full of personality and is a playful like, but also very much enjoys work. She’s recently been enjoying turnout at her owner’s farm since her last race a few weeks ago and her owner reports that’s been been doing quite well barefoot. Her jog video shows the a bit of her playful side, but also the potential for some really nice movement.

Duke of Viseu (HENRYTHENAVIGATOR – ST. MICHELE, BY DEVIL’S BAG): 2010 16.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Duke of Viseu started racing as a four-year-old in 2014 and went on to race a total of 35 times until retiring in the fall of 2017. He started his career off with a second place finish in a maiden claiming race and followed it up with a win in his next race. After more than a year away from the track, “Duke” is ready to find a new career and appears to have no limitations. Duke’s bragging right comes from his impressive lineage: his sire, Henrythenavigator, is a winner of multiple Grade I races in Europe and ended his career with a second place finish in the 2008 Breeder’s Cup Classic for a grand total earnings of over $2.7 million.

Cowtownblue (COWTOWN CAT – BLUE RAGE, BY HORSE CHESTNUT (SAF)): 2013 16.0-hand Florida-bred gelding

When you have a horse that has captured the attention of multiple CANTER volunteers — people who see inordinate numbers of Thoroughbreds — like Cowtownblue can say he has, then you’ve got to pay attention. If you couldn’t tell from the picture, Cowtownblue has quite a personality and seems to want to be your instant best friend. His exercise rider can also attest that he’s a blast in the tack and has been his or her favorite ride of the day. Having last raced the day after Christmas, he’s a fabulous prospect for the Thoroughbred Makeover.

Monday Video from Total Saddle Fit: Mountain Biker vs. Eventer on Cross Country

Believe it or not, if you told a member of the general public that you simply “ride,” horses might not be the first thing they think of. After all, snowboarders and mountain bikers are riders too. So it turns out there is actually more than one way to ride a cross country course.

In a new promotional video for Lindores Farm in Fife, Scotland, YouTube mountain biking star Danny MacAskill and his Santa Cruz 5010 mountain bike go head-to-head against Advanced level rider Louisa Milne Home and her 7-year-old, 17-hand gelding Future Plans who has competed through Intermediate. Danny and Louisa face off over stone walls, roll-tops, banks and a keyhole, and while I bet you think Louisa and her horse are shoe-ins to win the race, you may be surprised by the speed and agility of Danny and his bike!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: New Year, New Opportunities

Happy New Year! It’s a clean slate, a fresh start, a blank page, and all those other clichés. This is the time of year that has everybody thinking about new possibilities and new opportunities. For sure, it’s nice to tie a fresh start to a calendar date, but in reality it isn’t really necessary. You can start afresh at any time, and there’s no better example of that than Thoroughbred racehorses looking for second careers.

Here are our three picks of the week who are looking for a fresh start of their own. Oh, and a belated Happy Birthday to them all as well!

Michazl John (STROLL – BUSHRA, BY DANZIG): 2014 16.2-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Here is a big-boned, handsome gelding that is surely just what many OTTB shoppers are looking for. Michazl John made just shy of $60,000 in his 26 starts on the racetrack so he’s certainly athletic, but his connections think he is ready to move on to a different career. According to them, he’s a good horse to work around and ride and the Finger Lakes volunteers who met him for his listing thought he was very classy and composed even on a very windy day. Michazl John is clean-legged and said to be sound with no vices.

I’m Old School (KIPLING – W W OLD SCHOOL, BY ROYAL ACADEMY): 2010 16.0-hand Illinois-bred gelding

At 69 career starts and just over $130,000 in winnings, I’m Old School is a lovable warhorse who still has plenty of spring in his step. I’m Old School is sound with no vices or previous injuries and is being retired from his owner’s large stable to make room for some up-and-coming prospects. Like many warhorses, he’s a level-headed gentleman. He also seems very sweet and intelligent and should be a joy to have in the barn.

This mare has been a good athlete for her connections and her current trainer, who she’s been with for the past three years. Her trainer says she does everything right and is easy and pleasant to be around, in addition to being very athletic. Critical Thinking hasn’t actually raced in the last year, but she does have published workouts as recently as a few weeks ago so she is eligible for the 2019 Thoroughbred Makeover.

In case you missed it, EN’s list of Most Impressive Saves of 2018 was posted yesterday and even though the clock is ticking down on 2018, we found one more great save that certainly deserves a shoutout before the year is over.

On Friday night spectators at the Cranbourne Turf Club in Victoria, Australia were witness to a masterful display of horsemanship just prior to the fourth race as the number 11 horse, Lady Bell, dumped her jockey in the paddock, spooked, and took off at a full gallop around the course. She was chased down by 75-year-old Kevin Wynne, a former jumps jockey and outrider of nearly 20 years, who caught the filly at full speed and brought her safely back to a walk. It may have been a spectacular save, but of course to Mr. Wynne says he was just doing his job. Bravo, sir!

The Guinness Book of Records cites just a couple of records relating to horses jumping. There’s an official record for puissance (8 ft 1.25 in), for highest jump by a Miniature Horse (42.5 in), and for longest jump over a liverpool (27 ft 6 in), but there doesn’t appear to be a record for longest grid or course. Should someone ever strive to set that record, we herby nominate the folks at Harbarnsen Riding Club in Germany who have brought insanity in the middle to their schooling session by setting up a monstrous grid guaranteed to work that equine booty and then some.

Behold: the “mega row,” posted to Facebook by Lisanne Kriescher, that consists of 8 ground poles, 6 raised cavaletti, 18 crossrail bounces, 4 one stride verticals, finishing with two strides to an oxer. Phew.

Sometimes horses get the a case of the Mondays, too. We’ve all been there on a horse who’s done this or that a thousand times, but seemingly out of the blue one day they decide that they simply cannot even.

British eventer Will Rawlin recently shared this moment that we can all relate to when his horse, V.I.P Vinnie, a 10-year-old German-bred gelding owned by Miranda and Andrew Rawlin, took particular exception to walking over a ground pole during a recent school. And no, V.I.P Vinnie isn’t exactly a green bean event horse — he completed four three-stars this season at Blenheim, Chatsworth and Belton (OK, that part I can’t relate to). The next time your equine partner pulls a fast one on you and forgets ‘how to horse,’ just remember it even happens to the best!

Here he is running the Advanced at Burnham Market International Horse Trials earlier this year. No scary poles here!

We are so delighted to see Sara Kozumplik Murphy back aboard her main squeeze Rubens D’Ysieux for the first time since since their fall on August 6th at Millbrook Horse Trials from which she sustained multiple fractures in her spine, as well as disc and ligament damage. Sara has been open and honest about the trials and tribulations of her recovery on her Facebook page and even if you don’t know her personally you just can’t help but root for her. After several surgeries, weeks on bed rest and in a halo, it’s got to feel pretty darn good to get back on the horse, even if it’s just to walk for a while. Keep on keepin’ on Sara, you’ve got this!

Mane ribbons and rainbow reins a-flying, ride along with 10-year-old Lucia Isenhart as she expertly pilots “Barbie,” a 10-hand pony owned by Phyllis Meyers, across the country in the Baby Starter division at the Spring Run Mini Horse Trial last weekend. As if this petite team weren’t adorable enough on their own, there’s a serious feel-good story to go along with it.

Just a few short years ago, Phyllis attended an estate auction in search of a trailer to buy and ended up coming home with an abandoned pony with terribly overgrown hooves. Take a look:

The maybe 15ish-year-old little redheaded mare, dubbed Barbie, was given a new lease on life thanks to Phyllis and she’s become a fabulous little event pony under the guidance of Amanda Conti, head trainer at Tuscany Hollow Stables in Goshen, Kentucky. Barbie and Lucia, a student of Amanda’s, have become local favorites and they make a wonderful team who clearly have a blast together. Make sure you keep an ear out for a mid-ride shoutout of ‘Hi Miss Phyllis!”

Olympia, The London International Horse Show, has it all (well, almost all — eventing needs to weasel its way in somehow): It’s the only UK Show to host all three FEI World Cup qualifiers in dressage, show jumping and driving. There is also a Shetland Pony Grand National and dog agility competitions to enjoy. In addition to the competitions there are some incredible performances to witness including stunt riding from The Devil’s Horseman and a technically incredible demonstration, Reprise des Douze, from the La Garde Républicaine.

And then there’s the Christmas Finale complete with Father Christmas in a sleigh drawn by two snow white carriage horses, Mary and Joseph leading a miniature donkey and a miniature horse, a sing-along Christmas carol, and some questionable choreography. Please enjoy and have a very Merry Christmas, EN.

Erin Pullen took her three-star mount, Tag, out for his first spin of the season and the pair threw down a jumping fault-free cross country run in the Intermediate A division. Tag looked raring to go as he took this long spot at large corner on course — well sat, Erin!

Since it’s right before Christmas, this is a big weekend for barn holiday parties. Got a potluck coming up? Here’s a surefire way to liven it it: get a NEW CLEAN set of muck fork tines, MacGyver a way to stand it up, and then display your chocolate treat of choice! I can see chocolate donuts or chocolate truffles working really well for this. If you want to go for more of an ‘in need of Probios’ look, maybe double-chocolate cookies would be a good choice. You could even sprinkle some white chocolate “shavings” around to really complete the look!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: The First of Many RRP 2019 Editions!

Have you heard? Trainer applications for the 2019 Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) Thoroughbred Makeover are now open! That means that it’s now totally appropriate to start dreaming, scheming, and window-shopping for the perfect RRP 2019 prospect.

EN’s Shelby Allen already put together a great synopsis of everything you need to know about important dates to remember and eligibility requirements, but it’s worth reiterating that the deadline for trainer applications is January 15, 2019. Eligible OTTBs are Jockey Club Registered and have raced or had a published work after July 1, 2017. They also must not have begun training for a second career before December 1, 2018. Here are three RRP 2019 eligible candidates to get your window shopping started!

Don’t let Hangry’s name fool you —  he’s a sweet and easy-going horse, plus he’s a true athlete! In 46 starts, Hangry earned almost $95,000. In 2018, however, he just hasn’t been placing as well as he used too and is retiring sound and in search of a new job to excel at. Hangry’s sensible, he’s about as amateur-friendly as an OTTB can get, and he’s the type of horse that would do anything to please his people.
