Shoutout to all the eventing families out there! May you all one day capture a family photo as precious as the one above which Rhonda Sexton shared with us. Rhonda’s daughter Molly Scher competed at the Texas Rose Horse Park Spring Horse Trials on Mother’s Day and it looks like Molly’s horse, Yukon Do It, wanted to show her dad, Scott Scher, a little love too! Can we get a big collective “D’awww” please?

Thursday Video from Nupafeed: Jumping in the Rain at Jersey

Domino show jumping at Jersey Fresh CCI***

Posted by Jacob Fletcher on Tuesday, May 15, 2018

What is it with it raining at Jersey Fresh International? At least cross country day was mostly dry unlike last year, but the skies opened up on Sunday.

It was no Kentucky Derby, but competitors (particularly those in the CCI3* division) had to deal with a pretty sloppy track. You can see the puddles on course from this video that Jacob Fletcher posted, but the footing still appears to have held nicely and, in fact, the conditions didn’t throw him and Atlantic Domino off one bit! That pair posted a double clear round — one of six out of 18 total finishers in the division — which moved them up from 9th after cross country to a final placing of 5th. Well done!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: It Takes A Village

Earlier this year the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) introduced a pilot Team Competition at the 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover to be held October 4-7 at the Kentucky Horse Park. RRP has now announced that 15 teams will be contesting the new program and, for anyone who may still be interested, a limited number of team spots are still open. Amongst the 15 accepted teams and two college programs: Georgetown College and State University of New York-Morrisville State College.

Right now the only disciplines in the team competition are show jumper and and show hunter, but with enough interest perhaps we’ll see an eventing option next time! Teams consist of at least four members each and all members take part in the retraining of the horse. Two team members compete the horse at the Makeover further showcasing their versatility. Whether teams are formed by college programs, families, or “barn families,” the team competition is a true testament to the “it takes a village” adage, which we’ve always known to be true for horses!

If you’re looking for your own project horse to raise, look no further than these three OTTBs that we’d love to see at an event one day:

Three Golden Rules. Photo via CANTER Illinois.

Three Golden Rules (ROAD RULER – SHARI’S GOLD SOLE, BY GOLD TRIBUTE): 2013 15.3-hand Illinois-bred gelding

Fans of dapple grays may not be able to pass this stunning gelding up — get out your checkbooks! Not only does he have that gorgeous coat right now, but underneath is a nicely proportioned sport horse prospect. Three Golden Rules is looking for a new career after 26 career starts. He looks like he’ll be a cute mover and is easy to handle and loves treats.

Located at Fairmount Park Race Track in Collinsville, Illinois.

Aim To Tease. Photo via CANTER Illinois.

Aim To Tease (STRAIGHT LINE – LAMPOON, BY DISTORTED HUMOR): 2011 16.1-hand Illinois-bred gelding

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover — Aim To Tease has literally been hanging out in a field since December but was still the sweetest, most polite gentleman for his photoshoot with the CANTER staff. He had a respectable racing career with close to $80k earnings in 25 starts before being sent to his current trainer who didn’t run him. He’s got good bones, clean-looking legs, and no known injuries — you just have to picture how nice he’ll look after packing on a few pounds, getting a hoof trim and a good grooming!

Located at Fairmount Park Race Track in Collinsville, Illinois.

Addie Sunshine. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Addie Sunshine (MR. SEKIGUCHI – LUMINESCING, BY CRUSADER SWORD): 2014 16.1-hand New York-bred mare

With a little TLC Addie Sunshine could certainly bring a little sunshine into your life! She’s a sweet filly who’s lovely to work around, but in two starts showed no promise as a racehorse. She’s had some good letdown time after spending the winter out in a field as part of a herd. Give her some love and she could be the light of your life!

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Lainey Ashker’s Mother’s Day Celebration

Patrick’s winning prelim round at Windridge HT! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I am the luckiest girl to sit on this mega pony’s back! Thanks to my mama for always outfitting me with the best OTTBs money CANT buy! I love you, Patrick and all the OTTBs bringing their riders home clean and fast this lovely Sunday afternoon! #LÆsquad #fivestarhamster #happyMOMday #excusethelanguage #beginningofcourse

Posted by Lainey Ashker on Sunday, May 13, 2018

Yup, two helmet cams two days in a row! The evening season is in full swing for sure.

Lainey Ashker has a very unique way of spending Mother’s Day — by winning the Preliminary division at Windridge Farms Spring Horse Trials on an OTTB that her mother, Valerie Ashker, sourced! Lainey’s mount, Call Him Paddy, a.k.a. Patrick, is a 2010 edition by Alymagic and out of Woodford Princess. Momma Ashker has a real knack for spotting OTTBs with potential and giving them a great start off the track. Wouldn’t we all be so lucky to have a mom like that?

It’s a wonderful thing to marvel at upper-level horses in competition, yes, but events are also a great way to get to know local businesses and organizations. If you’re attending Jersey Fresh International this weekend be sure to stop by the trade fair pavilion and visit Team Velvet, Inc.

Founded by psychologist Dr. Susan Edwards, Team Velvet is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization which provides equine therapy for children who have experienced trauma. You can learn more about their star equine ambassador, Velvet, for whom the organization was named, here in The American Trakehner magazine. Thursday Video from Nupafeed: Walk On Water

Not only is it freedom that we borrow from our horses, but the feeling of doing the impossible. The second you leave the startbox you can suddenly fly, run faster than the speed of light, and walk on water. It’s the partnerships we form with our equine athletes and that feeling of conquering the impossible together that keeps us coming back for more time and time again.

This goosebumps-inciting music video by YouTuber Maria Tack will remind you of that very feeling. Watch if you need some inspiration ahead of the weekend!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Winner of Your Heart

This past weekend, we watched Justify clinch the win in the Kentucky Derby. The Bob Baffert-trained gelding will continue the quest to win the Triple Crown by next contesting the Preakness Stakes on May 19th.

Whether or not we’ll have another Triple Crown winner remains to be seen, but for now we’ve found three lovely Thoroughbreds who would sure like to be the winner of your heart:

Photo via New Vocations Racehorse Adoption.

R Fast Cat (BLUEGRASS CAT – R FAST LADY, BY ARTAX): 2008 16.1-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Warhorse alert! With 88 career starts and over $150,000 earned on the track, R Fast Cat was indeed pretty fast. He appears to have held up to the rigors of racing wonderfully and at 10 years old he’s sound and ready for his next adventure. Even though he’s no longer racing, he still loves to have a job and comes out of his stall every day ready to work. He’s a balanced, quiet gentleman who’ll surely make someone a lovely partner.

View R Fast Cat on New Vocations Racehorse Adoption.

Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds.

Run Indra Run (KISS THE KID – NANA’S BIRTHDAY, BY CIMARRON SECRET): 2014 16.2-hand Florida-bred mare

Here’s a sweetheart of a filly who seems to have a little more ‘woah’ than ‘go’ and doesn’t really have her heart set on racing. After lightly racing her in only seven starts, her connections decided she was too slow to keep in training. With that nice uphill build she could surely shine as a sport horse once she finds the right person to bond with and bring her a long — could it be you?

View Run Indra Run on Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds.

Photo via Second Stride.

All the Lute (MIDNIGHT LUTE – SHARP EYES, BY STORM CAT): 2014 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

All the Lute was apparently not a very impressive racehorse in his lone career start last October. Despite being sound, he’s been hanging out in a field since that race enjoying some down time before beginning the transition to a second career. As you can see, All the Lute has now been restarted under saddle and in that time he’s shown to be a quiet and willing guy.

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Meet the Prices

This weekend we saw Jonelle Price top the leaderboard at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials and be the first woman to do so since 2007. Her husband, Tim, clinched his first four-star win with Wesko at Luhmühlen in 2014, but a win at the vey top level had eluded Jonelle until now (though not to say she hasn’t had her share of smashing finishes!) Married since 2013, the couple from New Zealand has competed at four-stars together since the early 2000s.

Another title that these two could likely clinch? Cutest eventing power couple! Though this video is now one year old, it remains timelessly adorable. While life has surely changed quite a bit from it’s filming, particularly after the arrival of baby Otis Price last fall, they both remain serious competitors and best of friends. Plus, Tim likely still takes pride in his dishwasher loading abilities. Watch and get to know them!

It seems that Cooley event horses are dominating headlines worldwide, most recently with Oliver Townend winning Kentucky CCI4* aboard Cooley Master Class. Lainey Ashker’s #GOTDs Get So Extra

Courtesy of Lainey Ashker.

If you’re a fan of Lainey Ashker’s Grid of the Day (GOTD) series, you’ll absolutely love this new video she has put together. Lainey previously showed us how she works through a dressage ride on her 8-year-old OTTB Call Him Paddy with a narrated video. Now she’s bringing the same concept over fences!

This video is a compilation of Lainey’s riding over the featured gymnastic exercises with seven different horses, both client-owned and her own competition horses, ranging in experience from Beginner Novice to two-star level. As each horse tackles the grids, Lainey explains what we’re seeing: how the horse is going, what’s happening, what she likes, what she doesn’t like, and how she’s always working to improve the ride. In Lainey’s words, she’s letting us see “the good, the bad, and the ugly” so that we maybe we can learn something in our work with our own horses.

Do you like this new video series? Let Lainey know by subscribing to her YouTube channel and dropping her a comment!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Countdown to the Derby

Dust off your fancy hats, Thoroughbred fans — it’s Derby time! The first leg of the Triple Crown is upon us this weekend. After you’re done streaming Badminton, make sure you switch gears and tune into the Run for the Roses.

Looking for your own Thoroughbred champion? Check out our three picks this week from across the country:

Photo via Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center.

Sloping (LEMON DROP KIDCANDREA, BY TRIPPI): 2015 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Plain bay never looked so good. This handsome boy was just gelded in April and has been taking it easy and healing up at the Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center. He’s very recently just been getting back into light work and those working with him say he’s a smart, willing, and eager student. At three years old and having only had just one start, this guy is relatively blank slate who could make a very promising sport horse. If you’re looking to start one young, don’t pass up this nice one!

View Sloping on Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center.

Beauzippity (CITY ZIPBEAU HAPPY, BY BEAU GENIUS): 2011 16-hand Illinois-bred gelding

Beauzippity has had a fairly successful racing career thus far, with 27 starts and over $34,000 in winnings. This gelding is a real gentleman who stood politely for his CANTER photoshoot and his trainer calls him “totally broke.” He actually loves to run, but just isn’t fast enough for his owners to keep him racing anymore. Perhaps his love of running could be harnessed for another certain equestrian sport which involves galloping?

View Beauzippity on CANTER Illinois.

Photo via CANTER California.

Dylan Donnelly (TRIBAL RULE – HAZEN, BY RUBIANO): 2009 17.0-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

“Dylan” was quite a good racehorse back in his heyday. He raced nine time, most recently in 2012, and earned over $80. He was even nominated for the Breeder’s Cup that year, but bowed a tenon in his last race. He’s now being restarted as a riding horse with CANTER’s California affiliate and the team there has ultrasounded his tendon and everything, which looks great and should not put any limitations on his future career. In addition to learning new things under saddle, some of his favorite pastimes include taking naps in the sun and playing games with his turnout buddies.

View Dylan Donnelly on CANTER California.

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Ride Kentucky with Elisa Wallace

You can always count on Elisa Wallace for a great helmet cam video and her run at the Land Rover Kentucky Three Day Event this weekend does not disappoint. Elisa piloted the 17-year-old (or 16 if you’re Down Under) Australian-bred thoroughbred, Simply Priceless (a.k.a. “Johnny”), to a clear round with time and went on to complete their fourth four-star together.

I particularly love the audio from this video: You can hear the cheers of “Go Johnny Go!” from the crowd, the announcer over the loudspeaker, Elisa’s copious praise for her horse, and even tears of joy at the end. Watch, listen, and enjoy the ride!

Well, another Best Weekend All Year has come to a close and while we’re sad to kiss the KHP goodbye for another year, we’re thrilled at the fabulous weekend of sport we had. Kentucky 2018 at a Glance: Cross Country Stats

It was an incredible day out on cross country Saturday. Derek Di Grazia presented a course that was challenging to the athletes and did plenty of shuffling of the leaderboard, but was forgiving to the horses. The well-designed course combined with the perfect conditions made it a very safe day of sport and, as a happy byproduct, made my job of crunching these numbers much easier! Take a look at the stat breakdown from yesterday’s cross country:
