The Mountains Are Calling: 2023 Rebecca Farm Entry Preview

Mark your calendars for July 19-23, 2023 — The Best Event in the West is back with a entry list packed with top riders from across the country. Located in the mountains of Kalispell, Montana, Rebecca Farm is often attributed as a bucket list event by both spectators and riders from all levels of the sport — I for one can’t wait to experience all the magic planned for this year’s event.

Ride On Video will again produce a livestream and video archives of all phases at The Event at Rebecca Farm, and you can view the full schedule and more details here.

The Event at Rebecca Farm: [Website] [Schedule of Events] [Entries] [Volunteer] [Watch]

Number of Horses (as of June 25):
CCI4*-L: 9
CCI4*-S: 7
CCI3*-L: 20
CCI3*-S: 21
CCI2*-L: 41

A total of 9 combinations so far have come forward to compete for the headlining CCI4*-L in Kalispell, Montana. Highlights of the entry list include:

  • 2022 CCI4*-L Champion James Alliston will be presenting with Karma for the mare’s debut at the level, but one who has been near-flawless thus far on the FEI stage.
  • The trusty team of Hawley Bennett-Awad and Jollybo, who secured a strong 4th place in last year’s 4*-S.
  • Buck Davidson, who we haven’t seen at Rebecca Farm since 2016, will be flying Business Class — winner of Tryon’s 3*-S last month at their first international competition together.
  • 2022 4*-S Champion Liz Halliday-Sharp aboard The Monster Partnership and Deborah Halliday’s Cooley Moonshine, who will be hoping for their first completion together at this level.
  • Jennie Saville, 2019 Rebecca Farm Champion and recipient of the 2016 Rebecca Broussard International Developing Rider Grant, returns this year with Connory, adding yet another 4*-L debutant to the field. Jennie will also be piloting Pascal in the 3*-L.
  • Skyeler Icke-Voss will be aiming for her first 4*-L completion with long-time partner Argyle.

Also notable are Tamie Smith‘s three entries in the 4*-S with Kynan, Elliot V, and Cheers, with a fourth entry on Crafty Don in the 3*-S.

Hidden in the Intermediate waitlist is another exciting pair to keep your eye on — young rider Lizzie Hoff with Cooley On Show, Sharon White’s former 5* mount whom Lizzie acquired just last month. Crossing my fingers that the waitlist pushes them through so we can have the chance to watch Louie back at it!

Thanks to Rebecca Farm hosting the American Eventing Championships last year, the event will also for the first time be also hosting a Beginner Novice course — allowing this event to feature all divisions from Beginner Novice to Intermediate, and FEI levels from 2*-L through 4*-L. There will also be a Classic Three-Day Event Series division offered at the Novice and Training levels.

View the full entry lists, including CCI4*-L and CCI4*-S, on StartBox.The tentative schedule can be found here, with a full competition schedule set to be released in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to the Rebecca Broussard Developing Rider Grants, the Broussard Family is also providing Rebecca Farm Travel Grants this year, awarding free transport out to Montana for a rider at the CCI3*, CIC4*-S and/or CCI4*-L level — this grant will be awarded on July 1st, so stay tuned for the announcement of their recipients!

For anyone in the area who wants to help out, or for those of you visiting just to spectate at this stunning event, there are plenty of volunteering opportunities still to be had — click here to sign up. If you’re in the mood for a premier experience, you can also purchase a Patron Package to take in the event with more perks, and donations for these packages are put to support Halt Cancer at X.

Lots of pink ribbons were on display throughout the weekend to promote breast cancer awareness and Rebecca Farm’s Halt Cancer At X initiative. And yes, that bum belongs to Sandro’s Star. Photo by Leslie Wylie.

You can also follow Rebecca Farm on Instagram for more updates. We’re looking forward to bringing you much more from Montana, so stay tuned here or on our Facebook and Instagram for much more news to come from this thrilling weekend in the mountains. As always, #GoEventing!

Freestyling Across the Board: The Mrs. Stickability Awards

If you’ve been following EN for any period of time, you’re probably familiar by now with the infamous footage of Andrew Nicholson vaulting his way out of what very well should have been a rotational fall for him and Mr. Smiffy at Burghley, circa 2000. In his honor, we often like to give out special recognitions to those riders who add a little *spice* to their rides (all for our sake, of course).

This past week has given us a few of these stellar moments to add to the trophy case — of which the grand prize for the Stickability (slash Freestyle) Awards goes to 2022 Speed Derby Champions Harriet Biddick and Silver Lift at the Hickstead Derby on Saturday. As very aptly noted by one user in the comments, “Hickstead course with no tack is like one of those nightmares I have right before I wake up.”

Barely phased by the loss of what one might typically consider a rather important piece of riding equipment, Harriet put to shame all those days I spent as a child jumping grids with my arms held out to the sides by nailing a very imposing triple plank combination with ease while bridleless. What a pair — gold stars for you.

A close Silver Stickability goes out to Austrian rider (and winner of today’s FEI Eventing Nations Cup at Strzegom) Lea Siegl at the Luhmuhlen CCI5* last week. After leaving the first FEI Eventing Nations Cup event of the season at Montelibretti in March as the winner of both the CCIO4*-S and the CCI4*-L, Lea and DSP Fighting Line apparently felt they needed just a little extra somethin’ to shake things up in the water complex at Luhmuhlen.

“Lost a stirrup? No problem” (for Lea at least, because I definitely tracked down and deleted all footage of my own less-than-graceful lost stirrup moment from my most recent horse trials — in which I looked like a fresh fish on a pony ride, and nothing like the utter core strength exhibited here on a 5* course). Keeping it real with an excellent save!

It’s one of those years when the Nations Cup events are especially stressed, thanks to the upcoming Olympic Games, and Caroline Pamukcu is holding on tight for the US this weekend! Caroline enters the final day sitting in second behind Austrian rider Lea Siegl and van Helsing P. After holding the lead after dressage, managing a stellar cross country round (on a rather fast course with nary a double-clear in sight), and just 0.1 points ahead of Dutch rider Sanne De Jong, we hope we can see Caroline and HSH Blake snag a silver medal for both herself and the USA in today’s final day of the LOTTO Strzegom Horse Trials’ FEI Eventing Nations Cup.

It is also officially Aachen Week, and we’re pumped! EN will have boots on the Aachen ground, where Tilly will be bringing us ALL the news from the event. Keep up with the EN coverage and follow @goeventing for all the content you can handle.

Welcome to the final day of Luhmühlen! After a lovely jaunt around Mike Etherington-Smith’s technical course yesterday, it’s time for our riders to bring it all to a close. Phillip Dutton and Azure. Photo by Abby Powell.

Our final day of Bromont and Bramham is upon us! After a good leaderboard shake-up across the (rather tumultuous) country yesterday, Phillip Dutton and Azure leapt from 15th to 1st in the MARS Bromont CCI4*-L with nary a double-clear in sight, while Boyd Martin wrings out first place leads in the 4*-S, 3*-L, and 2*-L. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Pippa Funnell leads the pack coming into Sunday in the Bramham CCI4*-L on MCS Maverick. I am once again stunned by the complexity we are blessed with in Bromont’s cross-country course, and am not at all surprised at the shuffled placings post-sandbox.

EN has boots on the ground at both Bromont and Bramham this weekend, so keep it locked here and follow along at @goeventing for everything you need to know from these big spring events!

Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill, and what better to celebrate with than a “Who Jumped It Best: Crab Edition”. Always one to give into my biases, I’m a big fan of Allie Knowles’ Morswood and would therefore have to give my vote to him, but can we address how Jennie Saville is just chilling up there, cool as a cucumber, probably just thinking about crabs or the dichotomy of man?

Also, I’m of course a big fan of all jumps crab, corgi, duck, and the like… but the Maryland Crab here looks like he’s seen some things (just look at those undereye bags). That, or he hasn’t had a restful sleep since their first 5* event. Of course, both are likely true.

Morning Viewing: Spring is quickly becoming my new favorite season thanks to my barn owner having a small breeding program. Her mares are making some darn cute babies (I’m talking leggy, dark, warmblood colts) and they’re being handled so well that they’re constantly asking for bum scritches or nose boops, and I just can’t be expected to act like a professional in this kind of environment. I’ll squish their little noses all day long and forget I even had a lesson scheduled.

Anyway, if that wasn’t enough to warm your heart for the week, here’s seven minutes of cuteness, courtesy of Elisa Wallace’s new baby “Toddy”.

The American Horse Council (AHC) is kicking off what could be one of the biggest studies in its more than 50 years with the 2023 National Economic Impact Study. The American Horse Council (AHC) is kicking off what could be one of the biggest studies in its more than 50 years with the 2023 National Economic Impact Study.

We all know that the humorous response of “In this economy?” has started to hit home a bit harder in recent years. While we’ve all likely been affected by the effects inflation, cost of living, business closures, and those gosh-darn home prices, how has this affected our horse industry?

The American Horse Council together with USEF are urging horse owners to participate in the 2023 National Economic Impact Study (EIS) for the equine industry. “The purpose of the census is to demonstrate the value of the equine industry in the national and state economies by analyzing the direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts of horse ownership, recreation, and equine-related services.” In short, if you want to prove how valuable the horse industry is to our nation’s economy, horse owners and industry suppliers can help by contributing your information to this study.

The survey will run from April 3 to September 29, 2023 — and if all the above still isn’t enough to justify a few minutes of your time, fear not: there are some tasty prizes on the line. Survey participants are entered for the chance to win a John Deere Z545R ZTrak Mower valued at $7500; one year of Nutrena feed for one horse (a $2,000 value); one year of Purina feed for one horse (a $500 value/horse); gift certificates from Trafalgar Square Books (total value $180); enrollment in Texas A&M AgriLife Equine Reproductive Management Online Course valued at $300/enrollment; plus more. So yes of course, I’ve already submitted my responses, because I’m competitive to a fault when it comes to giveaways.

Head here for more information and to complete the survey.

After an unfortunate injury on course in the Land Rover Kentucky CCI5*-L, our favorite girl Stella Artois has made it home! “Toddie” had sustained a severe tendon injury to her right front leg, and has been taking a nice vacation in the care of Liz Halliday-Sharp after being discharged from the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington. Rider Jennie Saville said “she’s doing much better… When the injury first happened she was so lame, she was non-weight bearing. We couldn’t get her studs out until [May 1st] on the other front foot because she couldn’t put weight on her leg. She is in much better form now.”

After a rocky journey back to 5*, we were all heartbroken to see Toddie sustain another injury, but Jennie and her team have always shown the utmost caution, patience, and consideration in the rehab of her horses. We are glad she is finally home, and hope to be seeing this stellar pair on course again soon.

There are several stunning things about this clip, especially Camarillo’s outrageous and fantastic leap, but I just wanted to take a moment to address how absolutely breathtaking the grounds are here. The incredible attention given to Tryon International’s water management are especially delightful. After a tumultuous cross country on Saturday, we are all on the edges of our seats for the final phase of the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event — show jumping. With one horse withdrawn overnight (Palm Crescent) and another pair not accepted following a hold during the inspection this morning (Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z), we now have a field of 24 horses and riders heading into the final stretch of 5* competition.

After a bit of a leaderboard shakeup yesterday, Tamie Smith and Mai Baum currently hold the lead for the USA with a 24.2. This gives them just a buffer of less than one pole (just 3.6 points) between them and Tom McEwen, in second place for Great Britain. Less than two time penalties separate Tom and third place holder Liz Halliday-Sharp and 5* debutant Miks Master C with a 28.5.

For the first time since 2008, a US rider leads the CCI5* field after cross country. Will this finally be the long-awaited year for not only an American Kentucky win, but a female rider win? 3:25 p.m. What true champions. First US champion since 2008 with Phillip Dutton, first female champion since 2011 with Mary King, and the first champion from the West Coast in nearly four decades, Tamie Smith is nearly crushed with a full-body hug from Zach Brandt on the off-ramp as she accepts waves of congratulations from the crowd. Congratulations to all riders on their amazing performances in this competition that will surely be one for the history books.

Here is a look at our final leaderboard — well done to our top ten riders!

Following Tamie’s 24.2 score is Britain’s Tom McEwen on a 27.8 in second place, Liz Halliday-Sharp with 5* rookie Miks Master C in third on 28.5, and Sandra Auffarth from Germany is in 4th on Viamant Du Matz on 30.4. Phillip Dutton and Z finish out our top 5 with 32.3. Maxime Livio of France, Will Coleman, David Doel from Great Britain, Doug Payne, and Emily Hamel close our leaderboard.

3:22 p.m. AND THEY’VE DONE IT!!! Tamie Smith and Mai Baum are our 2023 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI5* Champions, the first US Champions since 2008! The crowd goes absolutely wild as Tamie shatters all gender equality ceilings with her first 5* win to ecstatic fist pumps and American flags streaming through the audience. What an inspiring show of perfection from this amazing pair.

3:20 p.m. Tamie Smith and Mai Baum take to the ring. Will they do it? The crowd and I are at the edge of our seats!!

3:18 p.m. European Champion rider Tom McEwen aboard Nicola Wilson’s previous mount JL Dublin give a very strong ride, defending their position to remain our silver medal champions! Their score of 27.8 puts a lot of pressure on Tamie Smith, who will need to ride a near-perfect round to win!

3:16 p.m. First time 5* mount Miks Master C is expertly piloted to an impressive clear round by Liz Halliday-Sharp. Liz is guaranteed a spot in the top three with just a handful of cross country time on their sub-30 point score. What an impressive show from this young horse!

3:14 p.m. 2014 World Champion and Tokyo Olympians Sandra Auffarth and Viamant Du Matz ride a lovely clear round for Germany at their first visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. They easily claim a double clear round, maintaining their place in 4th at 30.4.

3:10 p.m. First ever US winners of the international festival CHIO Aachen, Will Coleman returns to the ring with Off The Record. They drop a back rail on the first element of the triple combination, falling down into 7th place with an additional 0.4 time penalties.

3:07 p.m. Our most recent American Kentucky 5* winner in 2008, Phillip Dutton expertly guides Z to a double clear round, tapping the rail on just a single jump but leaving all sticks standing. He moves into the current lead at 32.3.

3:05 p.m. French Bronze WEG Medalist Maxime Livio keeps Carouzo Bois Marotin balanced and strong on course, adding no faults to their dressage score to place at least 7th at the end of the day!

3:02 p.m. Riding for Great Britain, David Doel and Galileo Nieuwmoed are the first 5* pair to finish on their dressage score after giving the fastest run on course yesterday. His score of 35.6 guarantees him a spot in the top ten.

3:00 p.m. 2022 National 5* Champions Doug Payne and Quantum Leap show their strength with a speedy double clear round despite adding a few extra strides between some of the fences. He will maintain his placing on 37.3, moving into the lead of our riders so far.

2:57 p.m. Entering the ring for her second round is Jennie Saville aboard FE Lifestyle, who unfortunately drops two places due to one rail on course. She adds 4.8 to her score with a smile on her face, still ahead of Will Faudree on a 42.9.

2:53 p.m. Our first pair today in the ring to finish double clear on cross country yesterday, Emily Hamel and Corvett maintain their 11th place position, absolutely soaring over the fences as if yesterday really was just a walk in the park. Adding just 0.8 time faults, they end on 39.5.

2:51 p.m. Strong winds start to pick up at the Horse Park as Will Faudree and Mama’s Magic Way produce a fast ride, unfortunately dropping just one pole on the B element of the triple combination, which moves them just behind Will Coleman and Chin Tonic at 43.1.

2:48 p.m. Canadian Olympian Jessica Phoenix and OTTB partner Wabbit drop five rails on course, hearing strong “whoa’s” from Jessie throughout the ride. 20 jumping and 2.4 time faults will drop her down five places on 63.8.

2:45 p.m. The live helmet cam makes another appearance today as we follow along with Boyd Martin‘s ride on rookie mare Contessa. They drop one back rail on the A element of the triple combination, adding 4.8 to their cross country score for a 46.7.

2:43 p.m. Great Britain’s Zara Tindall and Class Affair, here at her second US 5*, drop a pole on the liverpool, nice and snug on time at 54.6. She will maintain her position in front of Erin and Campground.

2:41 p.m. Erin Kanara and Campground had no jump faults on cross country yesterday, but unfortunately drop poles on one jump of the combination. 4 jump faults and 2.8 time faults conclude her round at 60.2.

2:38 p.m. Our leaders after dressage, Yasmin Ingham and Banzai du Loir make up for their unfortunate faults yesterday, clearing each jump with space to spare on a double clear round! They will end on a score of 62.1.

2:36 p.m. And here is Will Coleman on Chin Tonic, who unfortunately moved from 4th to 12th place due to time faults on course yesterday. This horse’s first CCI5* will end on a positive note with a lovely clear round, adding just .8 time faults for a score of 39.8.

2:34 p.m. 2022 Rebecca Farm champions James Alliston and Nemesis soar with no jump penalties and just two seconds to add to their cross country score, ending on a 64.2.

2:30 p.m. Still seeming fresh and full of strength after cross country, Great Britain’s Kirsty Chabert and Classic VI sail through on our first double clear round at 69.6.

2:27 p.m. The first of two 5* rides for Buck Davidson, Sorocaima catches a single back rail on the Cosequin oxer, ending four seconds over time on 79.2.

2:24 p.m. A strong round from Cornelia Dorr and Daytona Beach 8 just three seconds over time, ending on 87.8.

2:20 p.m. Jennie Saville and Twilightslastgleam give a careful and accurate clear round with some nice tight lines, tapping the last pole but leaving it standing for a score of 62.1.

2:18 p.m. With a pole rattle on the second fence but no rails down, Zach gives us a clean round, adding just two seconds to his cross country score at 139.9.

2:15 p.m. And here we go! Zachary Brandt and Direct Advance are our starters on this drizzling final day, and I am just an anxious ball of anticipation right now. Let’s watch some show jumping and crown a new champion!

Will Tamie bring us a long-awaited female US rider win for the West Coast? After the longest cross country run time we’ve seen in a while, we’re sure to see quite a few tuckered ponies contesting the colored sticks this afternoon. Stay tuned for what is sure to be a legendary performance!

16:11 And that brings us to the end of Day 2! Here is a look at our leaders heading into tomorrow:

Brits Yasmin Ingham and Tom McEwen lead the pack in 1st and 2nd place with just one time fault separating them. Tamie takes the lead for the US riders in 3rd place with 24.2 on Mai Baum, before Will Coleman and Chin Tonic’s 25.3 in 4th, and a nice 1.6 points difference before Liz and Miks Master C in 5th place. Just 0.1 point separate Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg from 7th place Buck Davidson and Carlevo, followed by Liz’s second mount Deniro Z in 8th. Germany’s Sandra Auffarth and Woods Baughman on C’est La Vie 135 make up the tail end of our top 10 leaders.

Thanks for tuning in to our live updates – we’ll be back tomorrow for an excellent day of cross-country out on Derek Di Grazia’s course. Keep it locked in to EN for the full report and all the news from the #BestWeekendAllYear.

16:10 Chin’s head shoots up after the salute, seeming pleasantly surprised that all this applause is for him. An excellent finish to our dressage rounds here at the Kentucky Horse Park! They take a solid 25.3 score, gaining them a spot in the top five.

16:08 A bit of a skip at A gives the pair a slightly lower 6.5 for their flying change, but they bring it right back for a ground-covering medium canter. Chin easily pushes down into the sand for their stretchy circle. They’re definitely putting some pressure on our defending leaders!

16:06 Will keeps Chin very balanced through all their transitions, earning another 8 in their square halt at C. A lovely swinging walk leads into a smooth strike off into their canter transition.

16:04 That’s quite a bit of fancy prancing, and Chin shows off his big steppin’ as they earn a solid 8 in their first half pass. Gosh, this horse’s trot is impressive.

16:02 And finally, the horse we’ve been waiting for: Will Coleman and Chin Tonic.

– Holder of the lowest 6-run average dressage score in our field, Will and “Chin” were the champions of the CCI4*-S at Setters’ Run Farm Carolina International this spring, scoring the lowest finishing score in the event’s history with a 19.4. This victory was a rare hat trick for Will, who had won the event the past two years on Dondante (2022) and Off The Record (2021). Will and Chin had a very successful international summer last year, with a 24.6 in the CCI4*-S at Luhmühlen and a 25.8 in the CCIO4*-S at Aachen. Will this “hyper-efficient” gelding give us another record score today? We’re on the edge of our seats!

Fun Stat Fact: There isn’t a 30 in sight on their FEI record, with their dressage marks trending more towards the mid- to lower-twenties.

16:01 A missed flying change drops a score of 1.7, Foxy seeming a bit amped as Jennie works to keep her together through the last few changes. Though starting their centerline “a bit like sailing into a headwind”, they finish with a solid downward transition on a score of 35.6.

15:59 Slightly lower scores in the halt and rein back for a bit of hesitation, and Jennie swings Foxy into the canter transition with an unfortunate disconnect, showing Foxy rushing into the faster gait.

15:57 Sporting her signature shining smile, Jennie is giving Foxy time to breathe through lovely suspended footwork at the trot. Strong marks in the high 7s are awarded to her extended trots that really push off the ground.

15:55 We are nearing the end with our penultimate pair, Jennie Saville aboard her final mount FE Lifestyle.

– Finishing up yesterday in 12th place with Stella Artois, Jennie has referred to “Foxy” as “the best cross country horse I’ve ever ridden”. Their 5* record has only continued to improve, placing 24th at Foxy’s debut here in 2021, 16th in 2022, and most impressively fifth at the Maryland CCI5* last fall. With a recent record dressage score of 30.1 in the Stable View 4*, we look forward to see how they fare today before what will likely be stellar cross country and show jumping rounds.

Fun Fact: Jennie gallops all her horses using a heart rate monitor, the data from which are all reviewed by a specialist at New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania.

15:55 A 28.4 brings Buck to 6th place, right ahead of Liz Halliday-Sharp’s Deniro Z.

15:52 Carlevo is a bit slow behind in his flying change and a bit tight in his stretchy canter circle, but has the mileage to pull off an excellent ground-covering second change. Big pats for Carl as they salute on a square halt.

15:51 A low 6 rating for a somewhat hesitant rein back, but a lovely extended canter across the diagonal brings a score of 8! If he stays where he is at the moment, he’ll move right into the top five.

15:49 This pair are no strangers to this arena as they rack in low-7 score averages in their first few movements.

15:47 Buck Davidson returns today on his final mount of the phase, Carlevo.

– Our annually-trending trailblazer led the pack yesterday with Erroll Gobey before slotting into 16th place with Sorocaima, but Carlevo easily has the most frequent-flier miles out of his three mounts this weekend – quite literally, as they’ve flown across the world for nearly 40 CCI4* runs together.

Fun Stat Fact: Buck and Carlevo took 5th place at Land Rover in 2022, and haven’t scored above the 20’s since 2020.

15:46 Big cheers from the crowd as Doug salutes to a 33.7 score, taking 14th place as he joins his team outside the ring.

15:44 In addition to being a strong pure showjumping competitor, Doug is also a top dressage rider and judge. His experience shows in the 7 points given to their left half pass as he urges the gelding to stretch.

15:42 Doug has piloted Quantum from a yearling, who successfully graduated as a champion of the Young Event Horse program. Just a little bit of underlying tightness at the walk, but a nice smooth transition into the canter keeps them in the high 6 scores on average.

15:41 Quantum exudes energy through his hooves, flicking out his front feet with proud excitement at the trot.

15:39 We now welcome Doug Payne and Quantum Leap to the ring.

– “Baby Quantum” certainly isn’t a baby anymore, as he and Tokyo Olympian Doug were our US 5* National Champions here at Land Rover 2022. This dynamite pair has taken a top ten finish in eight out of their last ten international competitions. Doug sure has his work cut out for him this weekend, with another entry in the 4* and one in the CSI 3* Show Jumping Invitational at the Horse Park as well.

Fun Stat Fact: Doug and Quantum have only had one cross country jump fault together in their entire FEI history.

15:38 Big cheers for their determination after making a lovely downward transition on the centerline. This world-class pair exit the ring on a 37.4, moving Hawley into 26th place.

15:36 Despite a handful of mid-5 scores for some hiccups, their average still maintains mostly high-6 points.

15:34 Jolly seems to be already thinking about tomorrow’s gallop, as she gives an unfortunate break to the canter in the second extended trot. You can still be rewarded for good transitions though, and Hawley pilots excellent ones following, despite the break.

15:33 The seasoned Jollybo knows her job as she shows the crowd a snappy first extended trot.

15:32 In the ring now is the female power-duo Hawley Awad and Jollybo.

– Jollybo is this weekend’s oldest horse in the field at 19 years young, and she shows no signs of slowing down. Known to be a rather spicy and opinionated lady, Jolly has been nothing but steady in her jumping phases over the years. Their dressage scores have continued in a downward trend as of late, so we look forward to seeing how this experienced California-based Canadian Team member fares in the Kentucky ring today.

Fun Fact: This will be the seasoned mare’s sixth trip down centerline for the Land Rover Event – twice in the 4* and the fourth time in the 5*.

15:31 David and Galileo Nieuwmoed earn a 35.6 to the sound of some cracking thunder as they leave the ring.

15:27 David pushes into a 7-point canter transition with some smooth lead changes. A nice rocking extended canter shows lovely transitions with good rhythm. Galileo gives some tail swishes during the canter half-passes that could be a bit more on angle.

15:25 I’m such a sucker for fancy black stallions, and Galileo is giving solid mid-6’s on the board (but 10s in my heart).

15:24 And Britain is back as David Doel and Galileo Nieuwmoed begin their test.

– This fancy young stallion is certainly eye-catching, and so are his recent competition records. Galileo took second place at his first CCI4* at Le Pin au Haras in 2019, and the pair finish sixth at their first 5* last year, making David the highest-placed Badminton first-timer at the event on only a few cross country time faults. As someone hoping for British team selection, David has certainly spared no praise for Galileo’s recent feats.

Fun Stat Fact: Galileo has only once received any cross-country jump faults, at the Bicton pop-up 5* in 2021.

15:22 A 43.4 score drops Zach and Direct Advance into 30th place on the board as they exit the ring to join their groom, former USEA President Max Corcoran.

15:20 Strong mid-6 scores in Zach and Roscoe’s swingy walk, but give a little “jiggy jog” into the canter transition. A bit out of balance from the extended canter, the lead changes come too early for this pair as they take low 2 and 3 scores in both changes.

15:17 The flashy Roscoe has some moments of unsteadiness in the half passes, but is overall giving a very nice show. He has a very cute floppy lower lip in all gaits!

15:15 After a quick arena drag, Zachary Brandt and Direct Advance will be our next pair in the sandbox.

– While Zach and “Roscoe” technically made their 5* debut last fall in Maryland, they still seek a completion at the level as Zach retired after just fence 9 on cross country due to the gelding sustaining a nosebleed. Zach has brought Roscoe along from his first-ever event to the top of the sport, and we’re excited to watch them here as they hopefully manage to complete their first 5*!

Fun Stat Fact: Roscoe has only dropped 6 poles in the duration of his international career.

14:58 One last short break before we start the third and final session of the day!

14:57 Palmer takes advantage a bit, with a few tight flying changes bringing low-5 score averages. A nice square halt at centerline brings them to a finish with a score of 39.8. He’s clearly ready for cross-country day already as he trots off to the exit ramp!

14:55 Meghan and Palmer are seeing solid mid-6’s on the board as he makes a lovely canter half-pass to centerline. His extended work is not quite as open as the judges are looking for, a bit tight behind the saddle, but they are definitely working hard.

14:53 Meghan is familiar to the 5* world thanks to her previous mount Pirate. She and Palmer start settling in to their work with some nice, steady footwork and a strong halt.

14:50 And up next we have Meghan O’Donoghue and Palm Crescent.

– Taking 11th place in last year’s Land Rover, Meghan and “Palmer” are known to live for cross-country day, where the off-the-track Thoroughbred really gets to open up the throttle. The pair took 17th place this March in the 4*-S at both the Event at Terranova and Carolina International. After an exciting 2022 season including Land Rover, Burghley, and Aachen, we’re looking forward to seeing the results of this season’s performance.

Fast Stat Fact: Palm Crescent is one of three OTTBs in the field this weekend, along with Buck Davidson’s Sorocaima and Jessie Phoenix’s Wabbit.

14:48 Daytona gives us a few “little explosions” due to her tenseness, and although not part of the test, at least she is giving us rather nice two-tempis while trying to stay on lead…! The electric audience causes a few unfortunate spooks as they finish down centerline. Props to Cornelia for keeping it together and managing this very spicy mare.

14:46 Low to mid-5s ringing through for Corny and Daytona as they try to power through the halt and rein back. We will likely need to hope for another post-cross-country leaderboard takeover as they lose 2 marks for Daytona changing leads much too early in the counter-canter.

14:44 Cornelia overshoots centerline by a tiny bit, and produces not quite the most extended trots in her rather tense mare.

14:36 After a quick break to move back on to schedule, our next rider to take to the ring will be Cornelia Dorr aboard Daytona Beach 8.

– Cornelia and Daytona scored a place on the silver medal-winning U.S. team in the FEI Nations Cup at Houghton International last year, debuting at the 5* level at Burghley where they finished tenth – even more impressive since they were in 50th place after dressage. This will lead us into a heavily-anticipated round today, as Daytona is known to be a bit “frustrating” in the dressage with a personal best score of 39 at Burghley. Will cross country tomorrow see another huge leaderboard leap?

Fun Fact: Daytona was previously owned by German rider Sandra Auffarth, currently sitting in 7th place on Viamant Du Matz after yesterday’s round.

14:32 We’re looking at a score of 36.6 as Nemesis leaves the ring to big pats from James.

14:31 A bit late behind in his first flying lead change, the second change sees Nemesis anticipating, transitioning about halfway between the corner and A for a 4-point average on the movement.

14:30 This horse can really flick his toes! A 5.7 on the hesitant rein back, but moving back into high-6 averages as they transition neatly into the extended canter.

14:28 Whether due to the electric atmosphere or the rumbling thunder, Nemesis has his eyes wide open as he moves into a slightly-stiff but steady half pass.

14:26 All the way from the West Coast, James Alliston and Nemesis enter the ring.

– Here for his CCI5* debut, Nemesis is the youngest horse in the field this weekend at 9 years old. The pair have just two finishes outside the top five since their Preliminary debut in 2020 – including a win at the recent Twin Rivers Spring International 4*-S – and they achieved a third-place finish in the 4*-S here last year. Their cross country and show jumping records are near-spotless, so we hope to watch them pull a competitive score in the ring today!

Fun Stat Fact: James has had 13 Kentucky starts since 2010 – the fifth most out of all but five of the riders here this weekend.

14:24 A few more bucking lead changes bring Sydney and Coco down centerline with a 43.3 score.

14:22 After some lovely circles, Sydney receives a wicked gasp from the crowd as Coco gives us her signature double-legged kick into the flying lead change, an accepting grin on her face. Our second change is much better, but still not quite the cleanest.

14:20 The judges are giving Sydney solid 6-6.5 point movements, with conservative but accurate footwork into the halt and rein back. Sydney actually used to ride the CBF-bred dam of Miks Master C, our previous horse in the ring.

14:18 Rookie pair Sydney Solomon and Early Review CBF give us a lovely canter down their first Land Rover 5* centerline.

– Our second 5* Land Rover Rookie pair has had a strong start this season, including a new personal best dressage score at Chattahoochee Hills. This pair has been together for nearly 10 years, so we look forward to watching their well-seasoned partnership. While their show jumping and cross country have been fairly fault-free, dressage has always been the weakest phase for “Coco”, as the mare has a tendency to throw a buck in the flying changes. Cross your fingers that we make these changes!

Fun Fact: This will be Sydney’s first time back at the Kentucky Horse Park since she was here for the North American Junior Young Rider Championships aboard her late mare, Lillian Pink.

14:15 And it’s 26.8 for Liz as she succeeds in pulling herself right back in to 4th place, bumping Boyd down to 5th. This gives us five sub-30 scores on the board.

14:14 Bobby Costello notes that Liz is a “craftsman in the ring” as she pushes Mickey through the end of a nicely relaxed test.

14:13 Though they scored a solid 8 point average for the halt, we are seeing mid 6’s in their walk. Mickey is working hard in these tough canter corners.

14:11 This Bromont winner is one of Liz’s newest partnerships, but you’d never know with this excellent harmony. Mickey’s collected trot makes him look so proud of himself.

14:10 After a very touching riders’ tribute to Jimmy Wofford, we are keeping the ball rolling as Liz Halliday-Sharp and Miks Master C enter the ring.

– The USEA leaderboard’s current top rider has been serving wins left and right with one of her newest 5* mounts, Kentucky first-timer “Mickey”. Liz praises him as “probably the best horse I’ve ever had”, and we can’t disagree. We can expect a highly-competitive score to be awarded within the next few minutes; if anyone can manage to win the weekend on a Kentucky newbie, it’s 2020’s USEA Eventing Rider of the Year. Let’s see if she succeeds in taking back her lead from Boyd aboard this 5* first-timer.

Fun Stat Fact: Liz and Mickey have placed in the top five in five of their seven most recent FEI starts.

13:46 7 points on a tail flick in the flying change, but this crowd favorite PanAmerican, Olympic, 5* champion pair is still serious competition. A 28.3 gives them 4th place, leading just ahead of Liz Halliday-Sharp before our break.

13:43 “Nothing but PBs for competitive horses” will lead these top riders into cross country tomorrow, as Boyd pushes Thomas into a rather cross-country speed extended canter.

13:42 Not quite square in the halt, Thomas still gives us some strong steps in the rein back. Scores are looking to the mid 7s during a very quality walk.

13:40 A very accurate, straight, confident halt at centerline before Boyd shows us how to go for it into a ground-covering extended trot.

13:38 Enter Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg TSF to great applause.

– After bumping some menage boards yesterday aboard the young Contessa, Boyd returns to the ring with the seasoned fan-favorite: our boy Thomas. With a 27-point average score and the determination of a Team Silver World Medalist, we can tell Boyd is ready to lock in their best possible score today as a healthy buffer against any potential show jumping poles on Sunday – especially with coach and legend Bettina Hoy on the sidelines.

Fun Fact: Boyd and his wife (and dressage master) Silva recently announced their pregnancy with their third child.

13:35 Changing from right to left seems to be a bit easier for Covert Rights, dragging behind just a bit in their second flying change. A 35.7 score brings Colleen into 17th place.

13:34 A very square halt sees a mid 7 point average, but we get a somewhat stiff transition as this “fancy prancer” very eagerly takes to the canter.

13:32 Colleen is going for it with a very snappy extended trot. Their long-time partnership truly shines in the dressage ring.

13:31 Colleen Rutledge and Covert Rights are next to enter the ring.

– This will be Covert Rights’ seventh time down the 5* centerline. This pair has been producing several consistent sub-30 scores lately, including a 27.2 in March’s Event at Terranova, but has also been consistently holding a few show jumping poles by the end of recent events. With an impressive EquiRatings cross-country speed score of 91%, this pair could truly go either way.

Fun Fact: Covert Rights is part-Clydesdale; the only draft-cross taking the field this weekend.

13:28 An unfortunate small spook in the corner causes a lead change well before A, but Booli proceeds into a lovely stretchy canter circle.

13:27 Lance attempts a tiny half-step forward before the rein back, averaging mid 5’s on the board.

13:25 Lance is looking at the crowds just a bit as the angle of his first shoulder-in is just a hair off track.

13:23 Next to canter down centerline is Booli Selmayr on her long-time partner Millfield Lancando.

– This pair were 2022 Kentucky Rookies, and they are back and ready to battle this year. With a most recent international finish in 8th place at Morven Park’s 4*-L last fall, we hope to see them stick to their mid-30s dressage score trend here at their second 5*. In the leadup to Land Rover, Booli and “Lance” have seen top-ten scores at all three of their Advanced runs so far in 2023.

Fun Fact: Gentle giant Lance is a whopping 17.1 hands; “built like a bus” as Booli says.

13:22 And Yaz slots right in to first place! A 22.1 gives them just 0.5 points over current leader Tom McEwen.

13:21 Marilyn refers to this pair as a “harmonious picture”, barely affected by the Kentucky crowds. Seamless lead changes lead to a perfectly square halt on centerline. Simply lovely.

13:20 Yaz is creeping up on the leader with her accuracy. Banzai has a lot of swing in his walk, easily moving into the problematic counter-canter corner.

13:18 Banzai is relaxed and confident and ever as their score flashes averages in the mid to high 7’s. Now that’s an extended trot!

13:16 We now welcome the woman, the myth, the leading World Champion legend: Yasmin Ingham on Banzai du Loir.

– In addition to claiming victory at the World Championships at Pratoni last year, Yaz and Banzai also took a second-place victory here at Land Rover last year, behind Michael Jung. With Miche’s noted absence here this weekend, I guess we could say there is nothing holding this impressive young pair back from another victory.

Fun Stat Fact: Yasmin has won every single age title in the UK (under-16, under-18, under-21, and under-25), and she and Banzai claimed the world’s biggest equine age title at the Eight- and Nine-year-old Championship CCI4*-S in 2020.

13:15 Maxime gives us a half-hearted shrug with his salute, exiting on a 35.5 in 14th place currently.

13:13 Despite being rather seasoned for a young horse, already showing at Pau despite his young age, Carouzo definitely seems to be trying hard with some nice stretch in the canter circle. He seems a little tense, which is to be expected with the high-energy crowds.

13:11 The French rider and French Selle Francais gelding are the picture of elegance with lovely, smooth extended trots. Their halt wasn’t quite square before the rein back, and Carouzo breaks to the trot for just a step during their free walk.

13:09 Second in the ring are Friday’s French representatives, Maxime Livio and Carouzo Bois Marotin.

– This marks Maxime and Carouzo’s second 5* together after rocketing up from 30th to 7th place at Pau in 2022 following cross country. Maxime was recently crowned the first Top 10 Champion of Indoor Eventing at the Sweden International Horse Show in November, as well as the winner of the CHI Geneva show in Switzerland a month later, on mount Boleybawn Prince.

Fun Fact: Maxime and his sharp jawline have been a hot topic here at EN for many years.

13:07 Just a shade off centerline, Emily and Barry manage a 38.7, falling into 19th position.

13:05 A little kick and a tail flick in the flying changes, with a point average around 6.5 on the board.

13:03 Barry seemed like he thought they were going into a canter after the reinback, but their solid partnership truly shines together as he proceeds in an orderly fashion.

13:01 Our Friday trailblazers are 5* Kentucky first-timers Emily Hamel and Corvett.

– This aptly named sports car has springs for legs, although we typically see dressage scores averaging in the high 30s. While we are interested to see where “Barry” lands today, we are definitely looking forward to watching Barry in the next two phases as he allows each jump his patented one-foot-minimum height clearance.

Fun Fact: Emily and Barry have their own illustrated children’s book titled “Big, Bold, & Brave”.

12:58 Hello EN readers, and welcome back to Dressage Day 2: Electric Boogaloo. We had an excellent show yesterday, and look forward to filling out the rest of the leaderboard this afternoon. We’ll see only four non-US riders between the white boards today.

Wheels up! Yaz Ingham says “see you soon, champ” to one of our favorite gingers, Banzai du Loir, as he heads across the pond for #LRK3DE. As a land-locked American, I have always found horse flights fascinating, and love this time of year when my Instagram doom-scrolling rewards me with videos of horses stepping on and off their plane crates. We here at EN were all visibly elated when we saw Yasmin’s name roll in last month as the Kentucky list blew up with international entries, so we’re wishing all our UK friends safe travels as their ponies take to the sky this week!

Listen, if all seven of the Barbie horses I had growing up looked like Thomas, I would have been euphoric. I’m unreasonably excited for the live-action Barbie movie release soon (the only thing better than Simu Liu playing Ken would be if it starred the noted “work-in-progress” himself), but the resulting memes may be even better. If you don’t follow Thomas or his “life of the party” stable sister, On Cue, on Instagram, I highly recommend it! While he is indeed “an icon, a legend, the moment” itself, I would love to see how you readers would label your own horses as Barbies — with the riders as Ken, of course.

I recently learned that my mare has the cute little habit of doing a massive tail flick over every jump. I, of course, had no way of knowing this, as one cannot see their horse’s tail whilst jumping (unless you’re doing something terribly wrong). We started calling it her Power Boost, but are starting to think that, in an attempt to actually utilize her frequently-ignored bum muscles, maybe she’s just accidentally hitting the wrong ones (like accidentally turning on your windshield wipers when meaning to hit your turn blinkers). I think that’s definitely the case here with Jerry, at least — good job using your core muscles buddy, but maybe you don’t need to try that hard…

Come As You Are: ‘The Thing I Have To Fight For’ – Molly Jensen’s Life with Cystic Fibrosis

Molly Jensen’s parents joke that she came out of the womb loving horses. However, Molly also came out of the womb already diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

Despite not growing up in a horse family, Molly has gravitated to horses since before she can remember. Even during her turbulent childhood plagued with medical setbacks, she would choose the horse toys over dolls every time. This meant that when Molly and her family learned that her health insurance for cystic fibrosis covered therapeutic riding as part of her treatment plan, she couldn’t have been more enthusiastic for the opportunity.

According to the CDC, “cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic, progressive, and frequently fatal genetic disease of the body’s mucus glands.” It severely damages many areas of the body, primarily the respiratory and digestive systems, but can also affect the sweat glands and reproductive system. While the disease itself is very rare, most people with CF are diagnosed by age two, so being diagnosed before or at birth was even more rare – a 0.07% chance.

Even as a tiny infant, Molly had to be fed applesauce with enzymes mixed in for her to be able to digest anything; yet despite it all, she says she is grateful. “I don’t know anything else,” Molly states when asked how she managed her life with her health struggles growing up. “It’s my Normal, even if it’s everyone else’s Different.”

Molly Jensen and EE High Expectations. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Molly credits her optimistic outlook and positive attitude to her amazing parents, who have always pushed her towards independence in every aspect of life. Being straightforward and honest with her and teaching her how to stand on her own, they always encouraged her doctors to direct their discussions to Molly herself. She cites them as having always been her biggest cheerleaders as they continued to support her choices and dreams –- especially through her equestrian endeavors.

During a childhood of riding at “all-around” barns, Molly discovered her love of jumping through a spunky lease pony. Unfortunately, after moving to Utah and taking up eventing with a local trainer, a terrible cross-country schooling accident resulted in her hospitalization for two weeks with a brain injury and a cystic fibrosis condition called pulmonary exacerbation. Rather than pulling her away from the sport, Molly’s parents remained supportive and became determined to find her a perfect coach who could help keep her safe. This led to Molly meeting upper-level event rider Katie Cobia, and in turn, her heart horse.

Molly Jensen and EE High Expectations. Photo by Kara Jensen Photography.

The week of Molly’s first lesson with her new trainer was also the week that Katie purchased “Kitty” (EE High Expectations) as a sale project. “I fell in love with her the second I saw her,” Molly fondly recalls of the spicy and opinionated mare. “I wasn’t a very good rider yet… I didn’t know much, I just knew that I loved this horse.” Molly was able to watch Katie work with the endearing 14.2hh Connemara from the ground up, and was even the first lesson student to ride her.

After her previous jumping accident, Molly’s parents were very serious about finding her a safe horse, and unbeknownst to her, they purchased Kitty in June of 2019. While Katie continued Kitty’s training, Molly continued to ride and compete on her for six months –- secretly telling Kitty to be super naughty for the “potential buyers” Katie pretended to have looking at her –- with the whole barn keeping it a secret that she was actually creating this special bond with her very first horse. That Christmas, her parents texted her a picture of what Molly thought would be a gift that had arrived late in the mail, but was actually a photo of Kitty with the caption, “She’s yours.”

“[Kitty] knows she’s mine, but she knows I’m hers, honestly,” Molly states. “Sometimes I’ve had thoughts like, ‘Why am I fighting so hard for my health?’ But she’s one thing I have to fight for. It just sparks a whole new motivation in you, when you love something as much as I love Kitty.”

Molly’s life with CF is a masterclass in dedication, commitment, and perseverance. Daily treatments for cystic fibrosis include a litany of medications and physical therapies, including a vibrating vest and a nebulizer mask, but this hasn’t stopped Molly from moving up the levels in eventing competition. Her electrolyte levels also have to be very closely monitored, as CF causes all the salt in her body to evaporate through her sweat, often to the point of being able to see physical salt crystals on her face after a ride on a hot day.

“When I pack up my trailer [for an event], I’m packing for me too,” Molly says in regard to the many treatments she must have on hand at all times. Her preparation for a weekend event starts three days in advance, with specific medications, electrolytes, therapies, closely-monitored food intake with enzyme pills, and most of all, rest. Sleep is incredibly important to her health management, with Molly needing a minimum of 12 hours to maintain optimal condition. “When I feel tired, I can feel my lungs slow first,” she admits. “I get sick super easy and don’t bounce back super fast.” If Molly doesn’t follow this careful treatment schedule, it can take her upwards of a week to recover from a single show weekend.

Through all this, Kitty remains Molly’s biggest motivation, and has brought out a new strength that she hadn’t expected. A few years ago, Molly says she would have never had the courage to use her treatments out in the open, or even talk with people about her condition, but one day, when she was running a bit behind at an event, Molly decided to multitask for her horse’s sake. “I’ve gotta do this for Kitty so that we can ride better later,” she told herself, donning her portable vest and nebulizer mask in the show stall.

When she first started multitasking by using her portable treatments while grooming Kitty, the normally opinionated and sassy buckskin would gently rest her chin on Molly’s vibrating vest – surprisingly not afraid of the devices at all, despite them looking “weird and crazy”. Today, Kitty continues to give her courage, and Molly now appreciates and welcomes the opportunity to explain CF to people and teach them about what she’s doing.

From the outside, Molly looks like any other die-hard, horse-crazy eventer. “It’s hard,” Molly admits, “because I don’t look like anything is wrong until it’s really, really wrong.” She is grateful for her decision to be more open and transparent about her health management with those around her, citing her amazing support group as the vital source of her success. “When I’m surrounded by an awesome support group, I don’t think there’s anything that makes me below [able-bodied riders].”

Thanks to her team of supporters, Molly doesn’t feel that she’s had any disadvantages when working to achieve her goal of becoming an upper-level eventer. “If people don’t have that [support],” she says, “that’s where the playing field gets more uneven – not necessarily the disabilities or trials or hardships that we each have, it’s when you don’t have anybody to help you through them.” At her most recent show, while she was struggling with two very close ride times during a hot day, she turned around after dismounting to find that her second horse had already been tacked up by her team and was ready to go. Her friends often remind her about her medications when going out to eat, and her family remains supportive of all her personal and riding goals. “Having good people is unmatched… I know for a fact I couldn’t do it without the people that help me.”

Looking to her future, Molly admits that she did not always have such grand plans. Growing up, her only goal was to survive through high school, so when she finally hit that milestone, she wasn’t quite sure what was next. This winter, Molly packed up her horses and moved to Florida for the winter season, a dream she’s had for years but was always told was unrealistic – impossible even. Thanks to her support team and the help of her trainer, she was finally able to make that dream a reality, and has been competing there since January with plans to return before the deadly summer heat hits the southern state.

Molly has a string of four horses when at home in Utah, and I’ve seen her myself at our local events, crushing it with Kitty at Training Level with plans to move up to Preliminary soon. In addition to her heart horse, Molly has also been competing her easygoing five-year-old Thoroughbred/Hungarian Warmblood gelding “Noble” (EE Noble’s Honor) at Novice. When at home, the young laidback bay gelding stays with Kitty at Katie’s barn, while she keeps her other two horses, Quarter Horse “Phoenix” and her 3-year-old Friesian cross colt “Viking”, on her property.

“Let’s be honest, equestrians are crazy,” Molly laughs, explaining how her horses help lift her through the challenges she faces daily. “Even without the CF… you have to be in love with it to do it.” She hopes that others can remember to not be too hard on themselves, and that everyone is just doing the best with what they’ve got. “I wish I would’ve learned a lot sooner that there is a lot of unnecessary stress and worry and self-doubt,” she admits.

Health conditions aside, Molly and I also bonded through another industry struggle that we share –- living in Utah. While we both have deep ties to the state, Molly admits that it has often seemed impossible to reach a professional level due to our geographic isolation on the great map of USEA. She shares that one of her dreams is to get into one of the USEA Emerging Athletes U21 camps, and hopes that we as a community will only continue to see more opportunities provided for isolated riders to be accepted into these programs.

She notes that while currently being alone in Florida with two horses is hard, it’s not the end of the world if something doesn’t go right at one show – there will just be another one next weekend. “In Utah, you get three shots,” Molly says, referring to our three recognized events held annually. While the few events we have are extremely well-run and arguably top-tier, nothing can compare to the “monumental” experience and education to be gained from the number of competitions available to an up-and-coming rider on the East Coast. “There’s got to be a middle ground.”

Molly Jensen and EE High Expectations at Skyline Eventing Park. Photo by Impulsion Images.

Looking to the future, Molly simply takes it all day by day and continues to press forward. She compares this mindset to the equestrian adage, “ride the horse you’re on today.” Rather than trying to push past her capabilities, remembering that all she has to work with is who she is today helps keep her focused on her goals. While Molly does host grand dreams of making her way to the highest levels of the sport, her simple response to inquiries regarding her future is impactful and humbling: “I want to be a good enough rider that I can bring out the potential in good horses.”

Outside of training and competing, Molly hopes to someday give back to where she got her start as a child by teaching therapeutic riding. With two adopted siblings and an unlikely chance of being able to have her own children, she also has a great interest in providing a home for children in foster care, offering help to as many as possible through equine-assisted therapies.

Molly’s love for horses truly shines in everything she does, and it is inspiring to see how much she radiates her positivity to those around her. She feels she has gained courage and motivation through her many trials, and made the decision this year to change her cross-country colors to purple – the awareness color for cystic fibrosis. After my incredibly enlightening conversation with Molly, I already know that she is going to accomplish everything she seeks to do and more. Her courage, strength, and determination is infectious and motivating, and I feel blessed for the opportunity to watch her continue to achieve her goals from the other side of the ring.

Eventing is one of the toughest horse sports out there, and I believe anyone facing additional challenges deserves to be recognized. If you are also a person facing challenging or unique circumstances, combating differences and diversity, or living with a “special” body, I would love to hear from you, share your story, and advocate for your differences. As show season creeps closer, I’m getting out my garment bag, digging my sun hat out from the depths of my closet, and trying to remember just how it was that I survived competition weekends last summer. I’m absolutely not a morning person, I was living out of my barn owners’ living quarters at each event, I have a rather inconvenient medical diet, and all our show venues are hours away. Can someone please remind me how the show life works? Thankfully, after my barn family and I moved to our trainer’s home base barn a few months ago, our team has become even larger, so I’m very excited about us all being there to support each other at events this year; however, our previous barn owners (see: Designated Horse Show Mom & Dad) are moving back home, so my whole vibe is thrown off. Do they crown a new Designated Horse Show Mom, or is there a sort of lineage protocol to be followed? Please advise on how this hierarchy works.

If you didn’t see the photos when these went viral on social media a while back, get excited, because this is a whole new level of matchy-matchy that we didn’t know could exist: matching your sneakers with your horse’s. It looks like there’s a larger range of styles in these pony sneaks than I have ever owned myself… but knowing horse girls, they’ve definitely chosen the correct target population! Can you imagine pulling up to cross-country warmup with your horse sporting a pair of Air Jordans? You’d just be flexing on everyone at this point.
