Collection Pass is officially home after spending time in rehab following surgery on his fetlock joint in May. Kate Chadderton said on her Facebook page that it will be awhile before he comes back into full work, but “Cole” has been cleared to start walking and trotting. Best of luck to Kate as she looks to get Cole back to competing this fall.

Summer is made for evenings like this. Not colds.

One of the things that I dislike most in this universe is the rare summer-time cold. They always seem to creep up on me at about 7:30pm on a Sunday night as I’m starting to sit down and get prepared for the week ahead. It always seems to start as a rawness at the back of my throat, itchy eyes and a mild headache that I try to write off as a lack of caffeine. By 9pm, my nose is threatening to get stuffy and I know that if I do not go to bed within the next hour Monday morning will be hell. Of course I never heed the warnings and so I’m sitting here with a stuffed nose and achey body. I suppose I will be having orange juice with breakfast and chicken soup for lunch!

Monday News and Notes:

Jock Paget must be checking his phone every five minutes. A decision from the FEI as to whether or not he can return to competition with no restrictions is expected as soon as this week. It will have been two months since the hearing where the FEI decided to remove his provisional suspension. Paget is eligible to compete at the World Equestrian Games, but he may still be facing some time away from the competition circuit. [More from NZHerald.co.nz]

Things are looking good for the US Show Jumping team as the WEGs draw closer. Team USA was victorious at Hickstead, leading from the start. The only team to finish on a zero score after the first round, they continued to put down clear round after clear round. [More from uk.eurosport.yahoo.com]

Wellington real estate drama is almost as entertaining as Orange is the New Black. A small bit of code designed to ensure fairness in real estate deals is being used question last year’s approval of an almost 60 acre dressage facility in Wellington. The parties going head to head are the developer, Mark Bellissimo, the village of Wellington and Charles and Kimberly Jacobs. Bellissimo and the Jacobs family have been going head to head over these issues for a while. [More from palmbeachpost.com]

Last week marked 100 years since the start of World War I. In addition to the millions of human lives lost during the conflict, it is estimated that eight million horses and donkeys were also killed. European armies relied heavily on horses, not only to transport ammunition to the front lines but also to pull heavy artillery across the battlefield. One million horses were sent from Britain to France for World War I duties, only 62,000 returned. Between 1914 and 1917, the US was sending a large number of horses by ship every day. These horses were so vital to the war effort that the transport ships were frequent targets of the German navy. [More from horsetalk.co.nz]

Saint Louis Encephalitis Virus which was once thought to be inert in horses has been identified in a Brazilian horse that had exhibited neurological symptoms. This is the first case in the world of SLEV infection in a horse that demonstrated neurological signs without any other infectious agent. SLEV is found all over the world and typically transmitted by mosquitos. There are no vaccines or effective treatments for the disease in any species. [More from thehorse.com]

In addition to plenty of exceptional riding to watch, there are also a number of other things you simply must check out if you’re in attendance. Welcome to the weekend, EN! It’s been very hot in Northern California, topping 106 yesterday afternoon. I’m planning on being out the door very early so that I can hopefully sneak in a ride before I retreat to the indoors, air-conditioning and a computer streaming the festivities at Millbrook. Welcome to Monday, EN! Time to start making your way back to the real world, after a fabulous weekend. If you’ve got a case of horse-show hangover, the remedy that always works for me is a giant white chocolate mocha and a 15 minute power nap at lunch. I can’t promise that it will work for you, but it’s been shown a day that starts with coffee is 110% better than one that doesn’t. Here’s to wishing you safe travels whether it’s halfway across the country, to the office or even just down to the corner market.

It was a big weekend for eventing all over the globe. Sam Watson of Ireland claimed victory in the CIC 3* division of Camphire Horse Trials in Waterford, New Zealand. Sam’s victory comes just days after the birth of his second son Toby.  Congrats Sam! [More from Horsetalk]

Wasn’t this supposed to be The Year of The Horse? You may remember the early months of this year as very rough ones emotionally, with several well known horses dying in a short span of time. Del Mar is facing a similar run of equine misfortune. A total of 7 horses have been euthanized since the race meet opened a week and a half ago. There is something very wrong here. [More from NBC San Diego]

Chicago-land residents will be seeing some new horse-related artwork in their community. As many as 100 horse statues are expected to be installed by a charity that provides financial support to injured Chicago police officers and the families of those killed in the line of duty. Each of the horses will be decorated by a local artist and named for a fallen officer. [More from Chicago Tribune]

Heat stress is something that should be taken very seriously. Over the past four days or so it has been appallingly hot in Northern California and many other parts of the country. It’s important to be mindful of the heat as it can impact our horses as well. [More from KPLC]

India’s most famous show-jumping horse, CJ-15, has died. While any death is sad to hear about, what makes this one all the more depressing is that the horse had essentially been abandoned to a shelter less than a week prior. In addition to being a show-jumper, CJ-15 was also part of the mounted patrol battalion. [More from Times of India]

Seven British racehorses have tested positive for morphine in post race sampling, including one owned by the Queen. I’ve always thought the FEI’s zero-tolerance rules are a bit excessive, in that some very benign things can end up getting folks in trouble. I don’t have a better answer, but I’m in agreement that the concepts of ‘strict liability’ and ‘intent’ should be explored a bit further by the FEI. [More from The Conversation]

Chinch is always watching, even when it seems like he isn't! Chinch is always watching, even when it seems like he isn't!

Chinch knows how to get a party started. A very jovial friend of mine once told me that if you’re drinking, you should always order two drinks. That way you have one drink to celebrate the weekend that has passed and one to celebrate the weekend ahead. There are indeed a great number of things to celebrate, notably David Ziegler’s win at the NAJYRC’s, Area III’s team gold and the upcoming fun this weekend at Rebecca Farm. Ah yes, it’s a good time to be an eventer.

The horse industry is thriving, quietly, in Frederick County, Maryland. According to an equine census taken in 2010, there are close to 8000 horses in the country. Additionally, Maryland has more horses per capita than any other state. Even though I am a Californian through and through, I must admit, I’m tempted to take a peek at what Maryland has to offer. [More from Frederick News Post]

A scary reminder to check that your trailer is securely hitched came out of the Pacific Northwest. A loaded horse trailer popped off of it’s truck’s hitch and landed in a ditch. The horses were only minimally injured and were able to walk home. The truck’s passengers were uninjured. [More from The Columbian]

One of my favorites on the 2014 US WEG squad is Buck Davidson. The Ocala Star Banner ran a nice article on Buck over the weekend. Even if Ocala is a very equestrian friendly place, these sort of pieces make me smile. At the end, the article mentions the other US WEG riders: Sinead Halpin, Boyd Martin, Kim Severson, Lynn Symansky and some chap named “Phillip Dutto”. [More from ocala.com]

If you were thinking that the controversy around Endurance at the WEGs had settled down, I’m sorry to burst your bubble. It has been announced that Mar van den Dungen has resigned from his role as chair of the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation Endurance Technical Commission over equine welfare concerns relating to 3 of the horses that were to be competed on by Dutch riders at the WEGs. The horses are provided by the United Arab Emirates and concerns were allegedly raised several weeks ago. [More from insidethegames.biz]

The Montana Migration has begun in earnest. Trailers from all over the country have started the trip to The Event at Rebecca Farm and I’ve been getting pictures from the road all weekend long. There’s something magical about road trips and the quasi-sacred space of the truck-cab. Conversations stretch on endlessly as the miles roll past. Getting there is one of the best parts of an event.

It’s the busiest Saturday in the history of ever. Aachen! NAJYRCs! Montana Migration! Events around the country! This is the sort of energy that summer vacations are made for. The long days are fantastic because you can cram so much in to one weekend. Good luck and best wishes to everyone competing this weekend. I seriously don’t know how I’m going to make it through this week. I know I say that every Monday, but this time I’m really serious. There’s so much exciting stuff ahead in the next two weeks that I may just have to get a serious case of horse-show flu and do a little road-tripping. Coming up this weekend we have the NAJYRC’s in Kentucky. The eventing horses are due on grounds by 4pm today and in barn inspections kick off tomorrow bright and early. If the NAJYRC’s weren’t enough to get excited about, folks are already getting on the road for The Event at Rebecca Farm! Seriously, how awesome is July?

Taylor, Prince and the Chinch. Taylor, Prince and the Chinch.

As reported earlier this week, Taylor McFall is hard at work raising funds to purchase her leased pony, Prince. Supporters around the equestrian community have been happy to help!  Taylor says she has a good start, but still a long way to her goal. To help get the word out about her truck washing services being available during The Event at Rebecca Farm, the crew from Dragonfire Farm made a commercial.

“TruckWash PowerWash featuring Gamal”

Always ready to support a great cause, Chinch made a commercial as well.

“ChinchWash”

In addition to truck washing, Taylor is also offering tack cleaning and is selling home made horse treats, called Pony Puffs. Taylor plans to offer her services at other events as well, so keep an eye out for her at your next West Coast event. For more information on contacting Taylor, please contact Earl or Jen McFallWe wish all the best to Taylor as she fundraises to buy Prince!

Don’t hesitate, bust out the plastic and do it! Remember, helmets generally have a five year life span, assuming no hard drops, falls or shocks. Once it’s been involved in a fall, it’s done it’s duty and must be replaced. And So the Quest Begins Anew

The barn is buzzing with activity and all I can do is marvel at the speed at which time whips by. It’s hard to believe it, but another year has flown by already and Team DF is getting ready for the annual trek to Montana for The Event at Rebecca Farm. A year ago I got this notion that I wanted to be on that trailer the next time it made the journey. I would like to say that I am going this year but my efforts to Make It Happen have been admittedly underwhelming.

I can trot out a litany of excuses and reasons why things are how they are, but what it comes down to is that I set a big goal and then I forgot the most important part. I failed at setting myself up to succeed.

This isn’t a bad thing and honestly, I’m not sad or angry with myself. I feel good about my progress, as slow and turtle like as it is. My Dressage is stronger and almost good when the stars align. Down banks still suck, but they no longer set my heart racing quite as wildly as they once did (Thank you Tom Cruise Witchcraft), and I’ve proven that I can huff and puff my way around a Novice track without dying, even if we have to jump in to the worlds largest pit.

What I am less pleased with is my fitness and my weight. In all honesty, my these are both a significant part of what’s holding me back. While it’s true that good, capable and talented riders come in all shapes and sizes, I know that I can be a better rider if I am more fit. My vanity also whispers in my ear, reminding me that I can come up with a way cuter jog outfit if I shed a few pounds.

A few weeks ago I got a message from an old friend of mine, Ryan Polli. She and I grew up riding ponies on the H/J circuit. These days she does graphic design work for a lot of equine industry clients and writes for a H/J focused magazine called Horse and Style Magazine. The universe has a funny way of giving you exactly what you need, right when you need it most.

Ryan has been out of the tack for a few years after an injury and has plans to get back in the saddle. Ryan approached me with the concept that we could do this whole crazy fitness thing together and really, that was what was missing from my last attempt.

Just ask anyone, I need an accountabilibuddy for the gym. Left to my own devices I regularly find myself coming up with excuses to cut my workout short. (“Which vet should you call for a mild choke? Well, try Dr. Cute, he’s pretty good about emergency stuff.  Oh, you already called him?  He’s on the way? I’ll be there in 20 minutes… for moral support.”)

Both Ryan and I are heavier and less fit than we’d like to be but we can change that. Along the way we will both be blogging our experiences. There will be a lot of sweat, cursing and stories about the guy at the gym who spends way too much time checking himself out in the mirrors.

After Ryan sheds a few pounds, she’s planning on heading back to Hunter/Jumper land, as her connections there run deep. I might have to drag her out for some fun on an Intro level course and see if I can’t show her what this whole eventing thing is all about.

So here we go, round two on losing weight and getting fit! You will be able to follow both sides of the story, here on EN and over at Horse and Style Magazine. Check out Ryan’s first post here!

I’m surprised I made it in to the office today. I was curled up in bed by 11pm last night and found myself setting my alarm for as late as possible. Long weekends and vacations both have that funny way of being impossibly exhausting. I’ve been enjoying my friend Clair’s photos of her trip to the UK. She headed over to visit family and has been posting some amazing photos. I will likely spend at least half of my day at the office daydreaming about making the trip over next year.

Monday News and Notes:

Remember everyone’s favorite swimmer, Michael Phelps? He’s taking on a new venture and buying in to race horses. His latest purchase is named “Water Cube” after the nickname of the swimming arena built for the 2008 Olympic Games where Phelps won 8 gold medals and became a household name. Phelps also has another horse, this one named “By A Hundredth”. [More from swimswam.com]

Therapeutic riding is one of the greatest things out there. It has shown a benefit in a wide variety of scenarios. Even after a marathon BBQ session on Friday and a second one yesterday, I still have half a bag of charcoal and several steaks left in my refrigerator. I’m very glad there’s still more weekend to enjoy, even I am concerned about the heat. Today is supposed to be screaming hot in Northern California and I’m almost out of sunscreen. I’ve always been a cooler weather gal, and I’m pretty jealous of the folks at Barbury right now. There’s been some amazing action across the pond, including a great ride by Clark Montgomery. Thanks Clair for sending the photo our way!

Fourth of July weekend is great! What more could you ask for? An extra day to screw around at the barn, fireworks and every excuse in the world to fire up the BBQ are the perfect recipe for fun. I haven’t quite decided how to spend my day, but pool side strawberry daiquiris are sounding pretty darn good.

It’s hard to believe that a year has rolled by already. It feels like just a few weeks ago that my BFF Stephanie and I were bouncing with excitement that we didn’t die on her horse’s first XC outing. When we went, he’d only jumped a handful of fences in his life. The big thrills on that schooling trip were simple things like trotting through a puddle, jumping 18” logs, and me not swearing when jumping off the world’s smallest down bank in to water. Yesterday, we returned to the same facility with Team DF and had a little fun. It is amazing what can be accomplished in 12 months. Where will you be this time next year?

Hailey and Mia are crazy and apparently hate sleep!! Hailey and Mia are crazy and apparently hate sleep!!

Dear EN, by the time you read this I may be in jail. I’m not normally an aggressive person, but I can explain. You see, this was supposed to be a relaxing weekend full of barn time, laughter and joy. Yesterday was indeed all of those things until two little rain clouds rolled in. You see, the plan for today was to go cross country schooling at Eventful Acres. We were going to leave at 8 until TWO TEENAGERS WHO WILL REMAIN UNNAMED BUT ARE TOTALLY PICTURED ABOVE suggested we leave at SIX IN THE FREAKING MORNING. Yes, it will be hot but leaving the barn at SIX IN THE FREAKING MORNING means being up at like FOUR THIRTY IN THE FREAKING MORNING, which is before any of the coffee shops in my area are even open. If coffee shops aren’t open, you’re still supposed to be in bed kids!

It’s shaping up to be a beautiful weekend, EN. At the risk of sounding like a whiner, I’ve had one of those weeks and this weekend is the opportunity I need to get my mind off of things. Some much needed barn time, a trip to the tack store and lunch with the ladies today should have me right as rain in no time flat. If that doesn’t put the pep back in my step our trip to school cross country on Sunday certainly will. Here’s to a refreshing weekend!

One of the best things about being an eventer is that if there isn’t an event on a given weekend and you have money burning a hole in your pocket, you can always hit up a hunter/jumper show to get some more stadium mileage or hit up a dressage show to get some time in the sandbox. Laine Ashker has been channelling her inner Dressage Queen lately with tons of stuff posted to social media that makes dressage actually look like fun! This weekend she picked up the last score she needed to net herself a USDF Silver Medal! Go Lainey!
