There’s something about a gorgeous expanse of green dotted with barns that just makes my heart sing. Of course, out here in California we are mostly yellow and have been for some time, but a girl can dream, right? I’m amazed at all of the aerial technology we have available these days. I caught myself idly checking out the AirDog late last night and quietly fantasizing about the helmet-cam videos of the future. I have visions of picture-in-picture video where the main frame shows the rider’s perspective and the smaller frame showing horse and rider from the side. Of course, I’m not sure I’d want to be galloping along on my mare with an AirDog chasing me. Racing The Train at Fresno County Horse Park is already exciting enough!

Last night was loads of fun. Team Dragonfire and friends gathered at Melissa Votaw’s house for the Bada-Bing-Bada-Blenheim fundraiser. It truly was a wonderful event. It was nice to catch up with everyone after they returned from Rebecca Farm and to start to see the wheels set in motion for Jen to make her European debut. Also, there’s nothing quite like seeing your barn friends in something other than breeches, barn shirts and dirt. The smiles are all the same though.

My Facebook feed is FULL of pictures like these and I LOVE IT. If you can’t be there, then the next best thing is to spend an evening scrolling for what seems like an eternity, glass of wine in hand, raising it in a little toast to each smiling ribbon shot you see. Now, this does mean that I polished off FAR more wine than I probably should have last night and that this morning is off to a bit of a painful start. However, by mid-morning that will all be forgotten in anticipation of more ribbons being handed out this afternoon. Hooray!

The F5 key on my keyboard has been taking some heavy abuse since Thursday while I attempt to keep tabs on all of my friends at Rebecca Farm. I’ve been madly refreshing scores and clicking through the divisions at a feverish pace. I may have to make a trip to the electronics store to get a new one before the afternoon is out. Facebook has been full of beautiful photos and videos of horses galloping across this strange green stuff. Someone told me it was called “grass”. We haven’t seen that for quite a while in California and I must admit, it’s making me regret not making the trip to Montana this year!

As if I needed more things to obsess about and worry over when it came to Dressage day. Dressage has never been my strong suit, nor have I ever found it particularly gratifying. It is a means to an end and my tests always come with a punch-line at the halt. The classic “I made time, right?!” and more recently “That second circle was supposed to be interpretive prance, not trot, right?” should give you an idea about how they tend to go. Seriously though, I would lose my head if a helicopter landed during my test.

Could today possibly be any more exciting? American Pharoah goes back to work at Del Mar, Team USA is throwing down at the Pan Ams, my favorite kids from Area VI are showing everyone what West Coast talent is all about at NAJYRCs, and many of my friends have started off for Montana. July used to feel like such a slow month during the lead up to Rebecca Farm, but it’s really taken a different tone this year. My phone is going to get a serious work out today. I’ll be anxiously refreshing scores and Facebook until I know those that I care about are at their destinations safely – whether that’s the finish flags in Canada or Kentucky, or in Big Sky Country. Good rides and safe travels to all.

Everyone is on the road! As if the NAJYRCs weren’t enough, it’s just about time to start getting on the road for Rebecca Farm. This is also the frustrating time of year where people find out they aren’t going to be able to make it, or that their housing arrangements have fallen through. Zach Brandt let us know that he won’t be able to make it to Montana this year and was gracious enough to offer up his pre-paid house for anyone who might still be looking for somewhere to stay. It’s a two bedroom house in Whitefish and would run $800 for Monday the 20th thru Monday the 27th. If you are interested, give Zach a call at 310.892.7882.

And they’re off!  The California State Fair race meet is in full swing, which means I will have to resist the urge to wander the back-side with a fist full of cash and a horse trailer in the parking lot. Also, the California contingent has left for NAJYRCs. I had the good fortune to teach lessons for a year or two. One of the kids I taught was Sami Clark. It’s been five years since then and it’s been thrilling to see a kid I helped take to her first schooling shows move up the levels and do amazing things. It never ceases to impress me how quick kids get really good when they are given the right opportunities and have a supportive environment. It brought a smile to my face to see one of the other kids I taught go on to win lots of tri-colors in the Jumper ring, including one at my old stomping grounds, Pebble Beach. Seeing Sami head off for this adventure is even better.

I might be starting today last in my division at Camelot, but I’m still thrilled with the weekend so far. Sure our Dressage was it’s typical underwhelming performance, but yesterday’s cross country more than made up for it. I haven’t been out to an event in over a year due to a number of factors, but hearing my friends cheer as I zipped around on my super-game little mare reminded me that I need to make time to do this for myself more often. The Tom Cruise Witchcraft was strong when I needed it most.

Shh… don’t be too loud. West Coasters are waking up this morning after what can only be described as an epic competitor party at Camelot’s inaugural recognized event. Today is cross country day and the courses look quite impressive at every level. I’m rather fond of Camille the dragon and may have to trek out there after dark to confirm for myself that she indeed does glow in the dark. I can only hope my horse finds her just as enchanting and happily hops over her right before we turn for home on our cross country run today.

Despite some awful rainfall that refused to let up, the crew at Encore Horse Trials worked to do their best to get the show in. Due to safety concerns of being able to get emergency vehicles on the course if needed, cross country on Sunday (today) will be canceled. The show will be scored as a Combined Test with ribbons mailed out to all riders that were unable to pick them up at the show. The folks at Encore Horse Trials with to thank everyone that was out braving the weather, especially the volunteers and the great jump crew that had their work cut out for them with less than 10 clear rounds. Hey EN, how’s it going? Of course I’m going to complain about the heat – it’s what I do most of the time. When I found out that Team Dragonfire would be making a run up to Inavale this year, I figured it would be a good way to beat the heat. I’m in the middle of a significant project at work and already pointed at Camelot’s inaugural recognized event next weekend, so I’m stuck here in California.  However, I’m not too distressed. My friends keep me in the loop with text messages and it is apparently just as hot up there. It is so hot that Team DF opted to go get pedicures to enjoy some air conditioning. I’ll have to ask Earl what color he selected for his toenails when they get back.

Second, um, what is all that wet stuff in the photo above? Did someone leave a hose on? Did a water pipe burst? Wait, you mean to tell me, that stuff CAME FROM THE SKY?! After this past week, I’m wishing I was at Luhmühlen with Chinch and Chinchwürst. I am very much looking forward to a small break from the grind to immerse myself in the things that feed my head, heart and soul this weekend. The weather has been very warm in my neck of the woods and it’s only going to get warmer. Lately, I’ve been considering giving the old “ride before work” routine a go. Regardless of what Stephanie would tell you, I’m NOT a morning person. I’m only awake before 9am out of a desire to stay employed. Since I typically start work at 6:30am, I’m thinking next week begins an experiment of riding in the pre-dawn hours. Beating the heat is certainly worth shifting my sleep schedule a bit.

Stuff like this breaks my heart. :/ Stuff like this breaks my heart. :/

West Coast folks and those of you that buy used tack online, take note: the crew at Barnacle Eventing was hit by thieves on Friday night. Barnacle Eventing is based out of Fairwind Farm in Santa Rosa. Two separate barns on the property were hit, with the majority of items stolen being Dressage tack. Josh Barnacle’s Voltaire jump saddle was taken as well. Tack theft is so upsetting. Fingers crossed that the folks at Barnacle Eventing are able to recover their missing gear and whoever is responsible is punished appropriately.

Ah, braids. Formerly my nemesis, now approaching meditative and financially lucrative! There’s something I’m starting to appreciate about buzzing by Starbucks at an hour when the baristas are still groggy, loading up on caffeine and heading out to the show to play hair dresser for a few friends. Last show, I realized I’m turning in to one of THOSE braiders, as I insisted on using glittery yarn on Killbary Prince for Taylor McFall and I’m off to do the same for Charlotte Greatwood on two mares, Gateway Night Light and Black Dog’s Top of the Morning at a Dressage show. Also, I’m ticking off the days until Camelot Equestrian Park’s very first USEA recognized event, simply because I’m dying to use this super cool sparkly copper yarn I found for my mare. I’m beginning to think I should get my head checked.

What a race. I’m still speechless. I was beginning to believe that I’d never see it done in my lifetime, that the early-summer ritual of hype would stretch on endlessly for the rest of my life. I am especially excited for what a win for American Pharoah may mean for us as Eventers. Several times in the course of the coverage, considerable energy was invested in talking about what a “pet” American Pharoah is. With mare owners undoubtedly lining up around the block, I’m hoping that in addition to his athleticism he passes that temperament on. A great athlete with a great brain is hard to find, and if American Pharoah can bring that to the table it will be excellent for those of us in the “secondary thoroughbred market”.

The last year of my life has been pretty peculiar and at times rough, so I am especially appreciative of the way the universe has chosen to align itself today, my 35th birthday. Up north we have Bromont with many of my favorite faces tackling the cross country course. At Belmont Park, we may see American Pharoah earn a place in history as the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.

On the West Coast, I will wake up in a very different place from where I was 365 days ago. I will check scores from Bromont while I wait in the drive-thru lane at Starbucks for my coffee. I will pop over to the Hunter/Jumper show where my local tack-shop’s mobile trailer is spending the weekend, in order to treat myself to a new pair of tall boots.

Then, I will find my way home — not my house, not the place I sleep at night — but home. To the barn, with my friends and my horse. The sun will warm my skin in the morning light and I will reconnect with the inner peace I have been missing lately. Happy Birthday to me.

One of my favorite things in the world is seeing the way people express themselves when painting jumps. There’s something special about the creative spark that comes forth when you hand an eventer a few cans of paint, a brush, some freshly primed jumps and say “have fun”. Whether it’s barn logos, an array of stripes or something more exotic, it gives you an insight to the people who painted them. One of the most satisfying things in the world is getting a great photo of your horse in spectacular form over something you spent hours getting just right. Mikki Kuchta of Aiken Bach Farm in Patterson, NY shared with us a photo of her intern Adeline Fleitz’s latest masterpiece. Not only is the Minion super cute, it’s great for riders who struggle with maintaining a good rhythm. Just chant “Bee Do Bee Do Bee Do” down to the chevron!

How did it get to be the end of May already? I honestly don’t know where April and May went. I mean, I remember my friends heading out to the events we always do at that time of the year, but they were only gone for like … five minutes. I think this relentless pace that the clock is keeping is a manifestation of the existential dread that my fast-approaching 35th birthday is bringing.

Chinch and I were talking, and he says it’s a perfectly reasonable reaction to a milestone birthday to buy myself a horse trailer, as long as there are living quarters and a full sized bar. I see no problem with this either. My husband on the other hand says I’m daft to take advice from a chinchilla.

You know the pit of dread that bubbles up in your stomach after you over do-it on a Saturday? That feeling that comes when you realize that even though it was a super fun day, half of your weekend is already gone and the other part will be spent recovering from that fun? I had that this morning until I realized it was a three day weekend. I was filled with joy not unlike the joy I felt when I found tall-boots that actually fit me – relief and excitement for the days ahead. I’ve been debating making the switch from paddock boots and half-chaps to tall-boots for daily wear and with some of the sales going on, I may have to see if I can double up on that relieved-yet-excited kind of joy I felt this morning by going out and finding myself a new pair of boots.

This weekend is an absolute mad house when it comes to eventing. So much to see and do! My favorite West Coast event to watch is in full force today – Woodside’s Preliminary Challenge. Cross country starts bright and early at 8am Pacific. By that time Stephanie, Chinch and I will be on our sixty-fifth coffee and probably rather punchy and giggly after rolling out from Sacramento at an obscene hour this morning. Come say hi, we may or may not be coherent, but we’ll certainly be friendly! Woodside’s Preliminary Challenge comes to a conclusion tonight with riders taking to the Show Jumping track in reverse order of standing. Some serious money is on the line and it’s sure to be an exciting finish!
