The event is the first in a series of public discussions planned throughout 2025 to engage participants in open dialog on concepts including potential rule and policy changes aimed at improving horse safety and well-being. 🐴 Sponsor Shoutout: Fly Season Mythbusters with EcoVet

A post shared by Ecovet Fly Spray (@ecovetforhorses)

Fly season is heating up, and we’re back with another myth from our friends at EcoVet—because better knowledge means fewer bites.

Myth: “Natural Means Less Effective”
Let’s bust this one wide open. Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t work just as hard—or harder—than the chemical stuff.

EcoVet is proof: their scientifically tested, naturally derived formula has been shown to outperform traditional fly sprays in both effectiveness and longevity. No pyrethrins, no essential oils—just a smart, targeted way to keep bugs off your horse and out of your barn.

🌿 Natural? Yes. Weak? Not even close.

Stay tuned for more myths (and solutions) coming your way here in Monday News & Notes! In the meantime, you can learn more about EcoVet here.

News & Reading

The first winner of the Kentucky Three-Day Event, Nick Larkin, has struck out with a new idea: Cross Country Equestrian. It’s a hybrid format of eventing that is based on the elements of cross country riding. There’s no dressage or show jumping involved with Cross Country Equestrian, and the courses feature jumps that can be passed up or jumped across levels. Nick says he designed this new sport with the root of eventing in mind, and wants to encourage riders to have fun and learn safely. Read a piece penned by Nick here.

Horse Sport Ireland has just been awarded funding for their forthcoming project “Breaking Barriers,” designed to facilitate stronger pathways for women to carve out a path in FEI course design. “A competitive selection process will identify a small group of women aged 20–50 who are already involved in course design and who demonstrate potential to progress to international level,” the announcement reads. “These participants will complete a structured development pathway that includes formal training aligned with FEI standards, placements at international competitions, expert-led national workshops, one-to-one mentorship, and a national showcase event to raise visibility and celebrate achievement.” The program is set to roll out this fall, with further information on applications and selection process to come. Watch this space for more.

What does great instruction actually look like? It’s an important question to think about, because coaches work to shape the future of the sport. Beyond simply teaching technical skills in the saddle, the big picture of coaching requires thoughtfulness. The USEA’s Eventing Coaches Program (ECP) is a certification program available to eventing coaches that includes a comprehensive curriculum of truly holistic coaching. Read more about the ingredients of great instruction here.

Meet the Horses & Riders of the Longines Luhmühlen CCI5* Field

It’s time for another EN Form Guide, and this time we’ve got your passport to Germany for our next CCI5* of the season at Longines Luhmühlen.

As we’ve done all season, we’ve populated this Luhmühlen guide into Notion — but after some feedback from our readers, we’ve made some tweaks to the user experience. We recommend viewing the Form Guide in its own window, but we’ll embed it below for you as well. Each horse and rider has their own card, which you can click or tap into to view their full profile. When viewed on Desktop, you should also be able to see each pair’s full profile without having to do any extra clicking.

Dressage gets underway on Thursday at 1:15 p.m. local time (CET), which is 7:15 a.m. EST. The morning dressage sessions on Thursday and Friday will be dedicated to the 4*-S, and you can view all competition live on H&C+ here. George ‘Bushman’: May 1999 – June 2025

19 years ago I remember waking up in a hotel room in the Czech Republic,…

Posted by Sam Watson Eventing on Saturday, June 7, 2025

Today we bid a fond farewell to Sam Watson’s World Championships partner, Bushman (who competed under Horseware Bushman during his career), who passed away this week at the age of 26. Sam and “George” partnered together for the 2010 and 2014 World Equestrian Games as well as three senior FEI European Championships, as well as several CCI5* events.

“There’s no doubt that George changed and created my pathway through this life,” Sam wrote in a heartfelt tribute on social media. “Without him, the rest wouldn’t have followed. On a broader note, there would be no EquiRatings. For me, he was the ultimate footsteps in the sand partner. There were times when I let him down more than usual and he found a way to carry us both home. He was brave, generous, sympathetic and he absolutely adored the sport. Today was our final goodbye to George, and you can imagine the sadness. But our eyes will dry and we’ll have endless happy memories to cherish. Thank you my boy. Eternal love, gratitude and admiration from us all.”

From a dairy farm in Vermont to the Olympic stage, Stephanie Simpson’s journey is the stuff of equestrian legend. Ten years ago, she was a self-proclaimed “control freak” just finding her footing as a groom. Now, she’s the engine behind Boyd Martin’s elite program, guiding a team of working students and top-level horses with grit, humor, and encyclopedic knowledge of every horse on the farm. Steph has traveled the world with Boyd—two Olympics, two World Championships, and 5*s galore—and she’s just as at home sprinting between horses at Kentucky as she is joking about her cross country superstition (spoiler alert: she never watches). Read a great feature on this #supergroom here.

Several individuals across the equestrian industry—including a prominent stirrup manufacturer, a show barn groom, a hunter/jumper trainer, and a sport horse veterinarian—have recently been added to the U.S. Center for SafeSport disciplinary list for violations related to sexual misconduct. Among them is Martin Cohen, founder of MDC Stirrups, now permanently banned by USEF for misconduct involving a minor. Brian Gruber of Tulucay Farm, groom Jimmin Alvarez Calvillo of Florida, and Lexington-based veterinarian and eventer Chris Newton have also been sanctioned, with some cases still pending final appeal. The Chronicle of the Horse reports more here.

A pair of 5* veterans have found a new pilot in rising British star Lizzie Baugh, who takes over the reins on En Taro Des Vernier and Crazy Du Loir, both previously campaigned at the top level by Oliver Townend. The Caunton Manor Stud-owned duo has made a smooth transition to Lizzie’s program, already logging promising results at Belsay. Caunton’s Victoria Wright called the move a natural fit—Lizzie is local, talented, and ready for the next step. “It’s how the next generation can come through,” she said. Lizzie will campaign both horses next at Alnwick Ford CCI3*-S later this month. Read more here.

When whispers of closure began to circulate at Washington D.C.’s historic Rock Creek Park Horse Center, students and instructors feared the worst—especially when trailers started arriving to whisk beloved ponies away. But after months of community advocacy, those fears were finally eased: Metropolitan Equestrian has stepped in to continue Rock Creek’s mission of providing public access to horses and horsemanship. While longtime boarders and some staff won’t be returning, the school ponies will stay put—and the next generation of horse-crazy kids will still have a place to call home. Today, we take a moment to rally around one of our own. The Bonnie Mosser Equestrian family is facing a deeply difficult chapter as Rob, Bonnie’s partner, bravely confronts a renewed battle with cancer. Having already overcome the disease once, Rob recently learned that the cancer has returned and spread — news that has brought with it an emotional and financial toll.

Bonnie has remained a steadfast source of strength and love, spending many long days by Rob’s side in the ICU and away from their farm. Now, the community is coming together in the way only horse people can — with fierce loyalty, compassion, and action.

A fundraiser has been launched to help ease the financial pressure and allow Bonnie and Rob to focus on what matters most: time together. If you’re able, please consider donating or sharing their story. Every little bit helps — and every message of support reminds them that they’re not alone.

Against all odds (and a very wet forecast), the Essex Horse Trials returned in style to Moorland Farm in Far Hills, NJ, for a one-day competition that celebrated sport, community, and perseverance. Organized by Olympic judge and longtime Essex supporter Marilyn Payne, the 2024 event nearly didn’t happen — but with 124 riders, enthusiastic tailgaters, and a scenic course designed by Morgan Rowsell, it became a day to remember. The event’s popularity, especially at the Starter level, affirmed the decision to downsize, proving that Essex’s heart beats strong — and it’s already on the calendar for 2025. Nancy Jaffer reports more here.

What’s Going On Beneath the Surface? Understanding Endocrine Disorders in Equine Athletes

We often associate endocrine disorders in horses with the “big ticket” complications — laminitis, obesity, exercise intolerance — but new research is revealing an even more complex picture of how these conditions impact the performance horse.

In a fascinating article by Dr. Jane Manfredi, the conversation expands into the musculoskeletal consequences of endocrine disorders like PPID (Cushing’s) and EMS/ID. From suspensory injuries to muscle atrophy and joint degeneration, endocrine disease is increasingly being connected to soft tissue and orthopedic issues that can sideline an athlete just as surely as a hot tendon or a sore back.

So what can we do? Early diagnosis is key — and that means understanding subtle signs, using modern testing methods like TRH stimulation and oral sugar tests, and taking action before the effects are visible. Nutrition and targeted support play a pivotal role in that process.

At Kentucky Performance Products, staying ahead of the science is key. That’s why KPP continues to formulate supplements that support metabolic health, muscle function, joint integrity, and whole-horse wellness. Because managing endocrine disorders isn’t just about keeping horses sound — it’s about helping them thrive.

Monday News & Notes from Futuretrack

It was a big weekend in France for 5* rider Samantha Lissington (NZL), who picked up the CCI4*-L win with the High Flyers Syndicate’s Quantas R at Royal Jump in Chaumont en Vexin. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL. Samantha swept the entire podium in this division, taking second with Alison Spence’s Billy Alberto and third with Kate Maitland’s Delarado.

The Kiwis truly shone this weekend all over the board, with Tim Price coming fourth on his own, Peter Cattell and Lucy Sangster’s Chio 20 and fellow Olympian Jesse Campbell rounding out the top five with the late Georgie Campbell’s former ride, Speedwell, owned by Georgie, Karen Margeurite Colombe and Gilly Kinloch. 💜

Would you consider attending a judging clinic? One hunter judge did just this at Devon Horse Show in Pennsylvania, and this could be an interesting idea to see in our eventing community, too. While educational and certification programs for prospective judges do exist, there seems to be an opportunity to also open up more generalized clinics to enthusiasts and those who are interested in exploring being a judge or licensed official. Like the Youth Mentorship Program mentioned above, educational opportunities like this can increase the numbers of incoming and much-needed officials who want to become more involved in their sport of choice. Chronicle of the Horse blogger Caroline Howe wrote an opinion editorial that calls out USEF for not taking horse abuse allegations and cases as seriously as stakeholders wish the governing body would. Specifically referring to several recent cases, including one surrounding now-expelled hunter/jumper trainer Shannon Eckel, who was investigation for an incident surrounding the death of a horse in her care, Caroline writes, “USEF, I am asking you in this moment to do the hard work. And to take the uncomfortable actions required to do what’s right for our horses and for our sport. Tradition, paired with how horses are viewed ideologically across different membership segments, poses a challenge to defining and enforcing strict welfare standards that we can all agree on. But tradition and human ideological differences don’t change a horse’s physical and psychological needs. Or what causes them pain, stress, and discontentment. Our traditions, biases and sport must not supersede horse welfare.” Read her full piece here.

A dispute between the International Eventing Officials Club (IEOC) and the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) is headed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland this fall. The conflict centers around the FEI’s termination of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that previously recognized the IEOC as a stakeholder representing eventing officials worldwide. The IEOC says the FEI has not acknowledged them as a stakeholder since August 2024, despite a temporary reinstatement of the MOU by the FEI tribunal. Efforts at mediation were unsuccessful, and the IEOC argues that the FEI’s actions undermine the governance and representation of eventing officials—many of whom are volunteers. The FEI maintains that their dispute lies with IEOC management, not the officials themselves, and says it remains committed to working directly with officials through other avenues. Feeling stiffness during warm-up? A bit of a sour attitude under saddle? These subtle signs could point to a vitamin E deficiency—especially in performance horses or those without access to fresh pasture.

Vitamin E is a key antioxidant that protects nerve and muscle cells. Deficiencies can lead to sore muscles, low energy, or even neurological issues. A simple blood test from your vet can tell you if your horse is lacking.

Horse Nation breaks it all down in this helpful article.

And don’t forget the gut! ProbioticWise™ from Kentucky Performance Products supports a healthy digestive tract—essential for performance, recovery, and overall wellness. Ask your vet if it’s right for your horse.

Monday News & Notes from Futuretrack

A legacy of hope and courage lives on through the Hannah Francis Award, which is now accepting applications for 2025.

Created in memory of Hannah Francis—an incredibly brave young eventer whose battle with osteosarcoma inspired the world—this annual award honors an Inspirational Young Eventer who embodies the spirit Hannah so fiercely demonstrated: dreaming bigger than fear, riding through adversity, and giving back to the community.

Hannah’s story, shared through her beloved soft toy, Willberry the Wonder Pony, captivated tens of thousands. Her charity, Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony, continues to fund critical research into bone cancer and grant equine wishes to others facing serious illness. The award’s bronze trophy, a beautiful sculpture of Hannah and her horse Mavis created by artist Amy Goodman, symbolizes not just the trials Hannah faced, but the strength, resilience, and passion she gave to this sport.

🐴 Sponsor Shout-Out: Fly Season Mythbusters with EcoVet

We’re back with another Fly Season Mythbuster from EcoVet, the fly spray that’s shaking up everything you thought you knew about pest control.

Myth: “All Fly Sprays Work the Same”
If you’ve tried one, you’ve tried them all… right? Not so fast. Most fly sprays rely on the same old chemical formulas—but EcoVet takes a completely different approach.

Instead of trying to kill bugs with harsh ingredients, EcoVet uses a blend of food-grade fatty acids that repels flies by confusing their natural radar. It creates a “no-fly zone” around your horse—no gimmicks, no overkill, just smarter science.

🐎 Want a spray that actually works and is gentler for your horse? This is it.
