We’re paying our respects to Iris Winthrop Freeman, an instrumental founding member of the sport who was instrumental in expanding its growth within the U.S. Iris passed away in May and leaves behind a lengthy legacy not only within our sport as a founding member of the USCTA, persuading her fellow Americans to take up the sport and carry its baton to grow the sport on this side of the Atlantic. What is driving good employees away from the equestrian industry? Survey says: compensation, lack of job security, poor leadership and communication, and little opportunity to progress are just a few reasons why people are leaving jobs in the industry to go elsewhere. What can be done about this? Where do we go from here? Read more in a deep-dive on the state of the industry here.

It’s National Farriers Week, and the USEA has some tips on summer horse care from this week’s spotlighted farrier, Chris Martelli. Packing for ANY trip is a bit of a chore, but packing for a horse show — especially when you’re competing often, or if you haven’t competed for awhile — can be even more daunting. You don’t want to forget anything, you don’t want to OVERpack, but what if your horse needs that one specific thing? If packing gives you a bit of anxiety, you can find some advice on making the most of it here.

If you’re considering importing a horse from Europe, you may want to take some time to think about their nutritional needs as they make the trip and transition to life in a new country. Different countries feed and manufacture feed differently, so take some bits of insight from this article to help you navigate this scenario.

Here’s a big question we’re always asking: do you need to be wealthy to participate in equestrian sport? Most will say yes. Is there another side to this argument? Equerry/Co tackles the topic here.

When pastures dry up, your horse’s health might be at greater risk than you think. Drought-stressed grass accumulates sugars, while weeds not only become more tempting—they also become more toxic. Add in the lack of fiber, and suddenly that “barely there” grazing can lead to a perfect storm of colic, laminitis, and nutrient deficiencies.

🟢 What can you do?
Start by supplementing with quality hay—and don’t forget what your pasture may be missing: essential vitamins and antioxidants like vitamin E.

That’s where Elevate® Natural Vitamin E steps in.
🌿 Helps limit the damage caused by oxidative stress
💪 Supports healthy muscles and nerves
🛡️ Boosts immune health for horses of all ages

Especially when pasture quality takes a hit, Elevate keeps your horse’s nutritional foundation strong. Because thriving—not just surviving—is the goal, no matter the weather.

Ever wished you could just skip that one spooky cross country fence? At a first of its kind Cross Country Equestrian (CCE) workshop held June 28 at FENCE in North Carolina, riders did exactly that—and without penalty. Designed by five-star winner Nick Larkin, CCE is an innovative format that rewards smart, horse-first decision-making and lets riders choose which fences to jump for points. Whether riding solo or in pairs, competitors from Level 1 (intro) through Level 5 (training equivalent) got a taste of this low-pressure, high-fun alternative to traditional horse trials. Riders praised the flexibility, safety focus, and emphasis on connection over perfection. If this sounds like your kind of eventing, stay tuned—CCE may be coming to a venue near you. Monday News & Notes from Futuretrack

In the spirit of the camaraderie we saw all weekend at the Maryland International CCI & H.T. / USEF Eventing Young Rider Championships, we thought we’d share a message Sara Kozumplik posted, a group text she sent to the athletes she was coaching this weekend. Within it, there are good reminders for us all.

“Hi ladies, I just wanted to send you a group text to say congratulations on making it to the Young Rider Championships! This is a huge achievement and each of you have worked very hard to get to this point. I am very, very, proud of you all and excited to be part of the support system this week.

Each one of you have different goals for this week, but here are the three goals I want to see from all of you collectively.

1. Horsemanship
Remember that although we all want to lay down our best performance at championships, a final result of about 70% of what you can do at home is a success. Ask any coach in any sport. Anything more is gravy. If you guys can achieve this, each and every one of you will finish the weekend in a serious position.
Our horses come first and last always… period end of story.

2. Sportsmanship
While winning is fun (and I certainly want each of you to kick some ass this weekend), I can promise you that at this stage in your career winning a medal is not what anyone will remember next year and beyond. What they will remember is how you conduct yourselves at all times. That is what people remember and what they want to cheer for.

3. Gratitude and being present in the moment.
All of you have earned this. You are all talented, hard working, kind, and good horsewomen. Remember to take a minute to appreciate where you are. These moments don’t come by very often, so take a breath and be thankful that you are here and that you have the support to do this physically and emotionally hard and expensive sport.

I shall be there for the ups the downs and all the mess in between this week and always. I’m very happy to do that because I’m proud of all of you. Now do me proud and embody the spirit of what the Junior Olympics are about.

Love you to the moon and back, let’s go get it 💪🏻❤️🔥”

Congratulations to the champions crowned and all of the riders who showed us their class, enthusiasm and horsemanship all weekend long. We can’t wait until next year!

The road to the LA 2028 Olympics has been a bit bumpy. Capt. Mark Phillips, a longtime course designer and former Olympic gold medalist, described Santa Anita Park—-site of the 2028 equestrian events—-as “perhaps the most difficult Olympic site on which to design a cross-country course ever.” A shake-up in leadership saw Derek di Grazia step down from the role after reaching an impasse with organizers. Alec Lochore has now been named course designer, with Mike Etherington-Smith appointed as adviser. The FEI is under pressure to meet a tight deadline, with turf needing to be laid by September to prep for a 2027 test event. With limited space and unconventional terrain—including a racetrack, its infield, and a car park—the challenge ahead is significant. Read more of Capt. Phillips’ thoughts here.

The future of North American eventing takes center stage this week in Adamstown, MD, as the 2025 USEF Eventing Young Rider Championships (YRC) kick off at The Maryland International + HT. A total of 34 combinations will contest the CCI1*-S, CCI2*-S, and CCI3*-S Championship divisions, representing seven USEA Areas and Canada. The Championships, now in their second year as a summer short-format event, feature five teams of four, two three-member teams, and eight individuals, including three scramble teams combining riders from different regions. Alongside the YRC, over 190 entries will compete across divisions from Training to CCI4*-S, making for a packed and promising weekend of competition at Loch Moy Farm. Read more fast facts here.

A recent Dear Stable Sage column tackles a heated barn blow-up that’s left one rider questioning whether her sanctuary has turned into a standoff. When a political rant from the barn owner pushed her past her limit, things got loud—and personal. Now, the barn feels more tense than tranquil. Can the relationship be salvaged, or is it time to move on? The Sage offers a thoughtful perspective on boundaries, barn dynamics, and finding peace in politically charged times. The late, great Jim Wofford had a gift for saying things that stuck—and more importantly, helped riders improve. In his classic column, recently resurfaced on Practical Horseman and well worth a reread, Jimmy shares timeless advice on how to use observation as one of your most powerful learning tools. Whether you’re watching warm-up at an event or reviewing video footage of a lesson, he reminds us that you can gain volumes—if you know what you’re looking for. As Yogi Berra once said (and Jimmy loved to quote), “You can observe a lot just by watching.” Read the article here.

Guac, cherries, and horse show clothes don’t always mix—but they do make for a charming essay from Chronicle of the Horse blogger Tracy Gold. After her non-horsey husband made his “adult leadline” debut (every show should have one!), he texted a friend about how much he admired what horses teach their daughter… except for the pressure of perfect turnout. Tracy had some thoughts about that—and turned them into a thoughtful, funny, and insightful read about what our kids really learn from spit-shined boots and pre-dawn packing lists. Read it here.

Planning ahead for winter weight loss? You’re not alone—many Thoroughbreds, like the one in this reader Q&A on TheHorse.com, tend to drop a body condition score or more during the colder months. The key? Start now. By building a nutritional game plan during the summer and adjusting forage, testing hay, and adding supplemental calories early, you can help your horse head into winter with a healthy buffer. Check out this helpful advice on maintaining condition year-round, before the chill sets in. Read more here.

Confused ≠ disobedient. In her latest piece for Horse Nation, Marcella Gruchalak reminds us that what looks like resistance in the saddle often stems from confusion—not defiance. A horse who’s anxious, inconsistent, or “not listening” might actually be trying their hardest to understand unclear cues. This insightful read breaks down the difference and offers practical steps to replace frustration with clarity and connection. Read the full article here.

Phillip Dutton and Denim. Photo by Tilly Berendt.

There’s been a change made to the U.S. lineup headed to CHIO Aachen in July after Karma, who was to be competed as an individual with James Alliston, picked up an injury that will prevent her from making the trip. In the wake of that, US Equestrian has swapped in Phillip Dutton’s second horse, Denim, to compete as an individual. Phillip will also ride Possante as a part of the U.S. team alongside Paris Olympians Caroline Pamukcu (HSH Blake) and Boyd Martin (Commando 3) as well as CHIO Aachen winners Will Coleman and Off the Record. Competition kicks off on Friday, July 4 — be sure to tune in!

In a powerful reflection for Pride Month, 5* rider Ema Klugman shared a deeply personal essay honoring her late mentor Packy McGaughan and recounting her own journey toward self-acceptance. “Until not that long ago, it was not just unpopular to be gay; it was illegal,” she writes. While Ema says she’s found acceptance in the horse world, she also candidly acknowledges lingering fears about discrimination. “Feeling accepted and settled in my personal life allows me to compete with confidence,” she says. “Feeling scared or alone or not fully yourself makes competing… feel like an uphill battle.” Her message? Visibility matters—and LGBTQ+ riders belong here, too. Read Ema’s piece here.

As the 2025 eventing season hits its stride, the USEA is giving a mid-year shoutout to the sport’s real MVPs: the volunteers. So far this year, 2,582 individuals have donated more than 32,800 hours across 134 competitions, recorded via EventingVolunteers.com. These hours aren’t just logged — they’re celebrated through the Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP), which awards medals for cumulative service. Notably, Diane Bird and Jim Moyer joined Susan Hart this season as the newest Gold Medal recipients (2,000+ hours). Jim, who was the 2023 Volunteer of the Year, leads the 2025 leaderboard once again with over 343 hours already logged. To every volunteer—from Area leaders to first-timers—thank you. The sport truly can’t run without you. Read more here.

Created by equestrian Holly Johnson and a veteran firefighter, the FireHorse Rescue Kit is designed with one goal: to save horses during barn fires—if it’s ever needed. With features like easy-use extinguishers, an equine blindfold, fire-resistant gloves, and a flashlight that cuts through thick smoke, each kit bridges the knowledge gap between first responders and horse people. It’s an all-in-one emergency system that barn owners hope will collect dust, not soot. FireHorse has already been adopted by top facilities like the Kentucky Horse Park and Wellington International, with plans to expand into compact kits and educational outreach. As Holly puts it: “When you equip your barn with a FireHorse Rescue Kit, you know exactly where to go—and exactly what to do.” Read more about FireHorse Rescue Kit here.

Endocrine Disorders: More Than Just Laminitis

We often think of PPID and EMS/ID in terms of laminitis — but the impact goes much further. New research shows these endocrine disorders can affect joints, tendons, exercise tolerance, fertility, and more. It’s a whole-horse issue, not just a hoof one.

At Kentucky Performance Products, we believe in proactive care backed by science. From aging athletes to metabolic-prone ponies, smart nutrition plays a vital role in managing endocrine health and preventing complications before they start.

In her latest Thoroughbred Logic column for Horse Nation, trainer and anthropologist Aubrey Graham reminds us that readiness is a myth — especially when it comes to green horses, short show seasons, and all the unpredictable chaos that comes with both. After a move from Georgia to upstate New York and a rough stretch of weather, injuries, and delays, Aubrey finally got her crew of OTTBs out showing — not because they were perfectly prepped, but because it was time. The takeaway? Set the bar low, keep the humor high, and get out there anyway. As Aubrey puts it: “No one is ready. Is anyone ever ready? Nope. Just gotta go. Pull a Nike. Just do it.” Read the full story here.

On this Juneteenth, let’s all remember to honor the spirit of Maya Angelou — the USEA penned a great piece on this that you can read here.

Several new modifications to rules are currently on the table out of the FEI’s Board Meeting in Switzerland this month, including new provisions about using substances or materials that create the appearance of foam in the mouth. Another rule change proposal centers around the rule that obligates riders to use a double bridle at the CDI3* level or above in pure dressage. Advocates are pushing for a change that would allow riders to opt for a single snaffle bit if they felt it was better for their horse. This follows on the heels of a rule change that removed the compulsory factor from spurs being used in dressage. For now, the FEI seems intent on keeping the compulsory double rule in place, but more pushback is anticipated as the social license and horse welfare conversation continues to grow. You can read more about the double bridle discussion here, and you can see the full outcomes from the FEI Board Meeting here.

Breed bias busted? A new study analyzing all CCI5*-L results from 2014 to 2024 takes a deep dive into how Thoroughbreds stack up against their warmblood counterparts at the sport’s top level—and the findings may surprise you. While Thoroughbreds tended to score lower marks in dressage and had more show jumping penalties, they outperformed other breeds on cross country and were just as likely to complete the event overall. In fact, no breed advantage was found when it came to total penalties at the end of the weekend. In short? Your next five-star prospect doesn’t need a designer label—Thoroughbreds are still very much in the game. Read more and dive into the study’s findings here.

Notably, defamation is a strict liability tort in Canada, meaning intent doesn’t matter—if you publish it, you can be liable. So if you’re about to sound off online, make sure it’s fair, factual, or at least protected opinion… or risk getting sued. Take a closer look here.

We’re wishing a very happy retirement to Oskar, a special horse who was partnered with Alyssa Phillips throughout his career. Together, Oskar and Alyssa collected many experiences, including a win at the inaugural Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S in 2021, a top-15 finish at CHIO Aachen, a total of 7 FEI wins, and so much more. Thank you, Oskar!

Happy Retirement, Oskar

Oskar, Oskar, Oskar where do I even begin? This is our ninth year together. I know you like the back of my hand. You’ve given me everything. First CCI4S* win (x2), first CCI4*L (x3- finished 2nd place twice), first Nations Cup, first Reserve Team member for the Pan Ams, first CHIO Aachen, and memories to last a lifetime. You’re currently feral in your field, but it’s in your best interest to take a step down. You owe me nothing and I owe you everything. Happy retirement buddy ❤️

Tuesday News & Notes from Kentucky Performance Products

What’s that we spied this weekend? Only one #supergroom and one of her best pals out for a spin at the Horse Park of New Jersey! Steph Simpson, longtime groom and manager-of-all-things for Boyd Martin had the special opportunity to take the Turner family’s Tsetserleg out for a spin in the Open Novice. A few time penalties kept them from collecting the blue ribbon, but the experience was worth it all. Don’t miss a full story on the experience coming your way soon here on EN!

Hot weather = hydration check! Riders are at higher risk for dehydration thanks to sweat-inducing show attire and the physical demands of riding. Even mild dehydration can impact your strength, focus, and recovery. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty — start your day hydrated, sip water throughout, and consider adding electrolytes during long or hot rides. Bonus: fruits, salty snacks, and cool drinks can help you stay ahead of the heat. You can find more hydration tips to keep you cool here.

🧴 Sponsor Corner: Beat the Itch + Stay Hydrated with Kentucky Performance Products 🌞

Bugs are back — and so is sweet itch season. Also known as summer seasonal recurrent dermatitis (SSRD), sweet itch is caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva of Culicoides midges (aka “no-see-ums”), and if your horse has ever experienced it, you know how uncomfortable and destructive it can be. [Find a helpful infographic on this topic here]

These pesky insects are active from April through October, so early prevention is key. Think: fly sheets with hoods and tail flaps, fans to improve air circulation, avoiding turnout during peak midge hours (dawn and dusk), and insect repellents. Even daily applications of baby oil or Skin So Soft can help deter midges with an oily barrier they don’t like.

When it comes to supporting your horse through summer stress — including hot temps and travel, in addition to itchy skin — it’s also vital to maintain hydration and proper electrolyte balance. That’s where Summer Games® Electrolyte from Kentucky Performance Products comes in.

Originally formulated for the 1996 Olympics, Summer Games replenishes electrolytes and trace minerals in the actual ratios found in horse sweat — no sugar-laden fillers, just research-backed performance support. It’s concentrated, affordable, and adjustable based on your horse’s needs.

Because itchy, uncomfortable, and dehydrated are not a winning summer combo. The horse that matters to you matters to us® — visit KPPusa.com or call 859-873-2974 for personalized supplement advice.
