A new documentary series featuring Rolex Grand Slam winner Pippa Funnell is now available to stream on ClipMyHorse.TV! From her beginnings riding ponies, to meeting her husband, William, to reflecting on success (and low times, too), Pippa captivates with her story on the big screen. “When struggling in jumping, you can almost always link it back to a flat work weakness,” USEA EA21 coach Rebecca Brown as the morning of show jumping lessons kicked off at the East coast Regional I clinic at Stable View yesterday. “We’re always trying to connect the dots from what we did in the flatwork to what we’re doing in jumping. Inevitably, if [the riders] had a struggle yesterday in the flatwork, it shows itself in the jumping and gives us another opportunity to fill in the holes and strengthen the weak spots.” Read more coverage from the second day of learning here.

Lifelong horsewoman Karen Yates has never been one to follow convention—she competed at the then-Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in 1993 without ever having schooled cross country beforehand. Now, her love for the sport shines through in a different way. A longtime supporter of the Kentucky Horse Park and its legacy, Karen has dedicated herself to helping grow eventing from the grassroots up through her popular—and completely free—“horse parties” at Copper Top Farm. These laid-back schooling events give riders of all ages and backgrounds a chance to experience cross-country in a safe, confidence-building environment. “If even one person gets excited and decides to pursue eventing, then it was worth it,” she says. Read a great feature on Karen and her impact in Kentucky (and beyond) here.

What can I build on now? That’s one question USEA EA21 coach Emily Mastervich wanted her riders to be thinking about during the first day of lessons at the West coast Regional Clinic held at Twin Rivers in Paso Robles, CA. “I told these guys I was really hoping to pass along some of the years of knowledge that I have dealing with all types of horses,” Emily said. “You can really tailor things to helping the horses develop their weaknesses without picking on them, so we did quite a lot of that today.” You can read more from the first day’s report here.

US Equestrian is keeping mum on details of its newly-enacted hair testing rule that went into effect on July 1. The implementation of this test is a part of a targeting effort towards dangerous drugs administered to horses for calming effects. Sonja Keating, USEF’s general counsel and chief operating officer, told The Chronicle of the Horse that the federation would publish data from its records annual. “In terms of the competitions and the number of samples, that is not something that we release throughout the year, just to ensure integrity of the program,” she said. “But we do on an annual basis; we do publish out after the end of each competition year the competitions that were tested that year.” No word yet on if the year-end report would include more than just the number of competitions tested/samples collected, but more information stands to come as the testing takes full effect. Read more here.

The USEA’s Emerging Athlete 21 Regional Clinics have kicked off this week, with sessions taking place at Stable View and Twin Rivers. On the East coast at Stable View, riders focused on “being a trainer, not a rider” with coach Rebecca Brown during their first day of lessons. “This program is very education based, not necessarily competition based,” Rebecca said. “and ultimately, we’re trying to give these participants the skills to ride and then prove any horse, not just the one they’re on, but the ones that they’re going to have in the future.” You can get a front row seat and some lessons of your own in this wrap-up report.

You spend time and money picking the right supplements for your horse—don’t let poor storage ruin their effectiveness. Whether you’re storing pelleted joint support or a liquid vitamin boost, a little prep goes a long way.

Here are a few golden rules to keep your supplements potent and safe:

Mind the temperature. Powders and pellets are your best bet for durability, but even they can suffer in extreme heat or humidity. Store them between 50–70°F with humidity around 40–50%. Liquids and pastes? Keep them sealed tight and away from temperature swings.

Avoid the elements. Direct sunlight and open air degrade nutrients. Always store supplements in cool, shaded areas with lids properly sealed.

Be delivery savvy. During heat waves or cold snaps, designate a shaded or insulated delivery spot—and skip the sunny car dash. Use a cooler for transport if needed.

Stay dry. Moisture is the enemy, especially for powdered and pelleted products. Keep desiccant packs in the bucket, reseal bags carefully, and consider investing in screw-top lids for airtight protection.

Bonus tip? Store your bulk buckets at home in climate control and refill a smaller barn-sized container as needed. Your horse gets max nutrition—and your wallet gets its money’s worth.

Saturday Links from World Equestrian Brands

Now here’s a real blast from the past, posted this week for a #ThrowbackThursday from The Chronicle of the Horse! Would you believe there was once an event in California that had an *actual* water jump on cross country? Really, it was not a jump — more of a casual swim that counted as an obstacle on course.

“The cross-country led along the left side of the valley to the beach where obstacle No. 3 consisted of going out into the bay alongside a pier and passing underneath it between the last sections of pilings, and thence back to the shore,” the article covering this competition on The Chronicle said. “Whether the horse waded belly deep or swam depended on his size as well as his mood!”

What is the target of USEF’s new hair testing rule that has just gone to effect as of July 1? Unfortunately, there exist people who have chosen to use jaw-dropping drugs such as the barbiturate pentobarbital, which is commonly used in humane euthanasia, to reduce a horse’s energy before competition, and this new rule aims to have a better chance of detecting these highly illegal usage cases. The advantages of using hair testing? The test can go back further in time — some 12 to 18 months, in fact — providing a larger window in case a drug has been used well in anticipation of competition. But the euthanasia drug isn’t the only substance on the target list for this rule — you can read more about it here.

Blanka Bodi, a young rider in Hungary, and her mother, Réka Lestyán, are being hailed as heroes after their brave efforts to save horses from a raging barn fire near their hometown. “I didn’t want anything to happen to the horses – I wasn’t thinking about myself. I just wanted to save them and help them get to safety. Someone had to,” Blanka told Horse & Hound. “I was a bit scared, but mostly because of the horses. We were feeding off each other’s energy. I was more nervous that they might get loose or run off, so my fear was really about them – not the fire.” Hungary’s Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky honored Blanka’s bravery at the Hungarian Derby meeting at Kincsem Park. Read more about the courageous efforts that helped to save the lives of four horses here.

Back pain, for a variety of reasons, is a common issue plaguing many horses, and it’s not always easy to know how to manage it. Of course, it starts with understanding the root of the issue. Does your horse have any conditions that would create pain? Does your saddle and equipment fit well? Are they properly conditioned for the work they are doing? Among other reasons, these causes can help you find a path forward to navigate the back issues. You can find more advice on what to consider when it comes to managing back pain here.

A very special story out of Maine: the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals has expanded its offerings to assist animals and their owners who may have been displaced or otherwise impacted by domestic violence. Statistically speaking, over 35% of women and over 28% of men have experienced some form of domestic violence here in the U.S., but the ripple effects of this have to date not been heavily addressed when it comes to pets and, particularly, horses. A team of people in a collaborative effort are working to change that, and you can read more here.

Here’s something you don’t see every day! While cross country schooling at Stable View in Aiken, SC recently, EN reader Amy Cobb’s student got a special visit from a parrot who’d gotten lost. Turns out, the bird
had flown some 4+ miles from his home!

“Turns out he is a scaly-breasted parakeet,” Amy wrote to EN. “He obviously belonged to someone and was clearly lost. He was super friendly and seemed to be looking for help. There was no way we could leave him there, so he went home with my student where she gave him water and fruit. I posted him on Facebook hoping to find the owner. As it turns out, he had flown over four miles from his home! Thanks to the kindness of everyone in the aiken community, his owner was located and he made it safely home.”

We’ve all done it: obsess over that perfect distance to a fence, only to ruin it spectacularly by over-thinking it. Sound familiar? The fact is, there really isn’t a way to “manufacture” the perfect distance — as we all know, but sometimes have trouble putting into practice, it comes down to the right rhythm. If you want a refresher or a new way of looking at this concept, this Practical Horseman how-to is for you.

In this week’s Thoroughbred Logic on Horse Nation, Aubrey Graham of Kivu Sport Horses tackles one of her biggest pet peeves: the dreaded phrase “no maintenance.” With trademark wit and a heavy dose of realism, Aubrey breaks down why this expectation is not only unrealistic for off-track Thoroughbreds, but potentially harmful. From hock injections to ulcer support, many OTTBs come off the track already having received thoughtful care—and they’ll likely need continued support to thrive in second careers. As Aubrey puts it, “Knowing that your Thoroughbred has probably already been maintained in some way, shape, or form is one important thing. Being willing to meet them where they are and help them get the assistance they need is another critical one.” Read the full column here.

Summer camp enrollment struggles aren’t just anecdotal this year—just ask Chronicle of the Horse blogger Sarah Susa of Black Dog Stables in suburban Pittsburgh. Despite years of rapid sellouts and even full camps during the COVID era, Sarah says 2025 is shaping up to be her slowest season yet, with no weeks fully booked so far. She’s not alone: equestrian programs across the region are reporting similar enrollment drops, some by as much as 50%. As rising costs hit both families and equine businesses, the dip in camp revenue is especially tough for barns that rely on summer income to sustain lesson horses through quieter seasons. The silver lining? “The kids who are coming are the most horse-crazy, enthusiastic bunch we’ve had in years,” Sarah shares. “And maybe that’s because the families sending them are choosing experiences that matter most.” Read the full write-up here.

Megan Neth’s OTTB gelding Rio was a pro in the hunter ring but a drama king at home, prone to meltdowns over everything from spooky straw bales to squawking geese. After ruling out medical issues, Neth turned to CBD—and within a few weeks, she noticed a calmer, more relaxed horse. As research into CBD’s effects on equine stress, inflammation, and pain grows, experts like Dr. Joyce Harman advise careful dosing, product transparency, and awareness of competition rules, as CBD remains a banned substance in many sports. Always consult your vet and check local regulations before trying it. Read more here.

Not all pain in performance horses shows up as obvious lameness, said Dr. Erin Contino at the 2025 Equine Science Society Symposium. Behaviors like tail-swishing, sluggishness, or resistance to contact may point to deeper musculoskeletal issues, gastric ulcers, or even airway or muscle disorders. Using tools like the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram and thorough diagnostics—including nerve blocks and medication trials—can help identify pain-related performance issues. “Very rarely are they misbehaving just to misbehave,” Dr. Contino emphasized, urging riders and vets to work together to get to the root of the problem.
