European Championships begin on September 18 at Blenheim in the Championships’ first return to Great Britain in a decade.

The prestige and heritage of equestrian sports give them unique marketing power. From luxury fashion houses leveraging equestrian imagery to sports broadcasters inking unprecedented media deals, the industry is riding strong tailwinds. This article from Equerry/CO takes a data-driven, analytical look at the equestrian sports sector’s growth; examining market size, media impact, sponsorship trends, and cultural crossovers, to reveal why investing in the equine sports industry today could be a winning strategy.

It’s safe to say that show jumping legend Beezie Madden has a whole store of knowledge to share. Lucky for us, she is generous with this knowledge, and in a recent interview with World of Show Jumping, she shared her thoughts on horsemanship and the challenges the equestrian industry is currently facing. It’s a piece well, well worth the read, as Beezie talks about the increase in availability of showing opportunities, what many find acceptable and how that compares to public opinion and much more. Beezie may spend her time in the show jumping ring, but her thoughts can be applicable to and food for thought for all of us. Read the piece here.

Last week, media were invited to a day of interview opportunities and a walk around Derek di Grazia’s refreshed cross country course for Defender Burghley. In case you missed it, Derek’s reversed the direction of the course this year — the first time this has been done since 2017 — and it’s certainly got us all buzzing to see it in action. The West coast is calling! This time next week, we’ll be on the ground at the USEA American Eventing Championships presented by Nutrena, where there are a ton of prizes, rewards and bragging rights on offer for all recognized divisions, starting with Starter and going up all the way through Advanced. See a full rundown of what you’ll get in your competitor packet and beyond here.

“Working with horses without reading their body language is like attempting meaningful conversation while actively not listening,” says liberty training expert Ben Atkinson in a recent interview with Horse & Hound. “Every time a horse offers us information with their body, and we miss or ignore it, we act like a dictator. We show them we are not a conversation partner, or someone they can trust.” Indeed, learning how to read equine body language is key to understanding how to best work with them empathetically and correctly. Read the full interview here.

Every so often while grooming your horse, you may come across a lump or bump that seems out of place. When these pop up under your horse’s jaw, is there a reason to worry? There are certainly a few medical reasons why these lumps and bumps may crop up, and understanding this can be key in knowing when to call your vet and when to just keep an eye on things. Monday News & Notes from Morven Park Fall International

We’d like to dedicate this Monday morning to all of team USA for their silver medal finish at the FEI Eventing Nations Cup at Arville (Belgium), but also in particular to one Lauren Nicholson, who won the individual CCIO4*-S title with Ms. Jacqueline Mars’ Larcot Z. Lauren, who won the CCI4*-L at MARS Bromont in June, has long been fond of this horse, formerly produced by Reagen Lafleur and Will Coleman, and has always known something special lay within. This win, a rare occasion for a U.S. rider in Europe (Will Coleman would be the last rider to win a big ticket European 4*-S, when he won CHIO Aachen with Off the Record in 2021), carries a lot of weight, and with next year’s World Championships coming up in almost exactly a year, Lauren’s got herself well on the radar of team selectors.

We’ll be catching up with Lauren soon here on EN, so stay tuned for more!

Oftentimes, horses seem to want more of a “challenge” when they’re learning how to jump. We hear it often: a rider tells a tale of how their horse didn’t seem to take jumping seriously until the jumps went up. But it’s not just about height. What are some ways you can teach your horse to pick up the damn feet and try a little? (Joking, sort of). Grand prix jumper Wilhelm Genn has some advice for you here.

Lea Siegl and DSP Fighting Line compete in the Tokyo Olympics. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Some retirement news to start your Saturday as Austrian Olympian Lea Siegl has announced the stepping down of her two-time Olympic horse, DSP Fighting Line.

“We started with national tournaments in Austria and worked our way up to the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships,” Lea told the Austrian equestrian agency Equestrian Worldwide. “It wasn’t always easy. Those who have known us from the beginning will probably know this too – not everyone always believed in it and very few could have imagined that things would work out so well for the two of us and that we would get this far. Fighty is a special horse and it was very difficult to gain his trust because he is fundamentally a bit skeptical. Patience and giving him time paid off. He definitely taught me that you can have dreams and that you should work on them and never stop believing. And that many things are possible that initially seem impossible. All the best, dear “Fighty”! Here’s to many wonderful years and always lush pastures in your well-deserved retirement!”

Throughout his career, “Fighty” has achieved 11 international victories and claimed 14 top-5 placings. He competed in the Paris Olympics in 2024, and he and Lea finished 15th individually. They also competed for Austria at the 2022 FEI World Championships for Eventing in Italy, finishing 25th individually and 15th as a team.

We’re wishing Fighty all the best in his retirement!

Germany is currently leading the series in terms of points earned. You can read a full preview of Arville here. We’ll have updates coming your way throughout the weekend from Belgium, so stay tuned.

Michael Pollard is en route back to the U.S. after a huge week in Mongolia that tested every bit of preparation and knowledge he had gone with. One of this year’s winners of the Mongol Derby, Michael told The Chronicle of the Horse that he was leaving Mongolia with, above all, pride in how he let his horsemanship lead and how he carried himself through the race. You won’t want to miss the full story here — and stay tuned, because Michael will be sitting down to co-host The Go Eventing Podcast’s next episode, coming your way on August 26.

Wednesday News & Notes from Maryland Horse Trials

Australia’s Paul Tapner announced a few days ago that his longtime 5* winning partner, Inonothing, has passed away at the age of 29. Paul described “Mannie” to most but “Spinhead” to those who knew him the best (Paul often described the English Thoroughbred gelding as quite quirky, having taken a particular liking to spinning in circles when he was over-excited). Mannie was purchased for £500 from Jenny and Claus Waaler and went on to complete 8 CCI5* events (then CCI4*). He and Paul were crowned Badminton champions in 2010.

“He was small and quirky, but trusted his rider and would do anything to please,” Paul wrote on social media. “Mannie epitomised the whole reason I wanted to be an Event Rider and not a Show Jump Rider or a Dressage Rider. I’ve always held the belief that to be successful at the highest level of Dressage and Show Jumping you needed to be a great horseman AND ALSO be lucky enough to have a super naturally talented horse. But I believed that Eventing sport was a far truer test of horsemanship and the bond that was developed between the horse and it’s rider. Mannie had very little natural talent in the Dressage arena, he had very little natural talent in the Show Jumping phase, he wasn’t even a naturally talented Cross Country Horse. But he learnt to trust me without limit and me the same of him. Mannie had a heart of gold, was as tough as nails and would try his utmost to do whatever I asked of him. He was the ultimate Event Horse who I was honoured to be partnered with.”

Mannie would ultimately retire in a ceremony at Badminton in 2012 to cap off his career.

Fun fact: Mannie was named after after Manuel in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers and his catch-phrase, “I know nothing!”

A truly special horse and partnership is unforgettable, and we’re sending all of our love to Paul and all of Inonothing’s connections.

It’s no secret that the economic climate these days is hurting all of us. From retailers to service providers to media, everyone is feeling the squeeze of the ongoing tariff increases. How do these tariffs affect horse sales in particular? It’s probably not a far venture to say that most “regular” horse owners are increasingly getting priced out of the market, and even if you are in a position to be making these purchases, the tariff rates and changes are enough to make anyone’s head swim. Here’s a quick look at how things stand as of now, thanks to the team at Entrigue Marketing.

As the USEA American Eventing Championships approach, let’s take a moment to meet the cross country course designer, Clayton Fredericks. A decorated rider for Australia, and still an active competitor at the upper levels, Clayton has also turned his hand to designing. It’s a new path in the sport that appeals to him on many levels, and riders will have a chance to tackle his designs at all levels later this month at Galway Downs. Read more about Clayton and his background here.

Further to our above mention of tariffs and the economy, another rather alarming trend in our industry is the departure of talented riders who lack the financial resources to continue on in their sport of choice. Chronicle of the Horse blogger Jamie Sindell writes about this in a heartfelt new piece. After the family had to make the difficult decision to pull back from riding due to financial limitations, Jamie’s daughter lost a bit of her spark. It wasn’t until a kind-hearted trainer offered to help the family make the situation work that her daughter’s spark returned. “”I can’t overstate what these kinds of opportunities mean to her,” Jamie wrote. “To a kid who sometimes feels invisible. To a kid who’s not sure where she fits or if she’s good enough. Who’s been told by the world that she needs trendy clothes, clearer skin, more followers, more money.” You can read her full piece here.

A note from EN:

It’s always difficult to report on the loss of a member of our community, and we want to pay Sarah Yorke and her family respect during this time. Sarah tragically lost her life on Friday while competing at Aston-le-Walls in England; her horse was unhurt in the incident. We’ll be keeping our news cycle intentionally slow over the next few days so that we can all take a pause to honor Sarah, and the others we have lost along the way. Information and news moves fast in this day and age, and sometimes it’s more important to take a pause. We’ll also keep you informed on any information that becomes available regarding support of Sarah’s family and community.

As the eventing community mourns the loss of Sarah, it’s important to remember to take care of yourself and each other. Support is always available via the British Eventing Support Trust Helpline . USEF members can access free, confidential counseling through the McLaughlin Young Group by calling 1-800-633-3353.

One of the best parts about the annual Mongol Derby, besides the fact that it always attracts a healthy number of eventers (we counted at least seven in this year’s field!), is that the grueling race brings together riders from all walks of life and locales. Take Frank Furlong, for example. At 64 years young, Frank is the oldest competitor in the field this year. A fall from one of his chosen horses between horse stations (where the riders can camp and find some sustenance between switching horses) hasn’t slowed him down, and with just under a week of racing to go we’ll be cheering Frank and his fellow competitors the whole way home.

Wednesday News & Notes from Loch Moy Farm

We’re starting today off with some sad news as British 5* rider Ben Hobday announced the passing of his former fan-favorite partner, Mulrys Error, on August 4. The bay Irish gelding was 23 years old. Mulrys Error may have come from unconventional breeding — his dam was a full Clydesdale, while his sire was a successful racehorse — but that he didn’t need to know that. With his dinner plate-sized feet, he galloped around events like Badminton and Burghley, completing four times at the CCI5* level with Ben in the irons.

“I am deeply saddened by his passing,” Ben wrote on social media. “A horse that defied the odds. A 5star COB with the courage of a lion. He gave me a reason to fight when the future was uncertain. He showed anything was possible and gave hope to everyone who watched him.”

In honor of this horse of a lifetime, a memorial service will be held on August 18 at 2 pm local time at 2pm at the Half Moon Inn in Willingham by Stow. “Everyone who loved him is welcome,” Ben invited in his tribute.

Now is the time to use your voice! US Equestrian is accepting rule change proposals from USEF members until September 1. You’ll need to have been a USEF member for at least five consecutive years, and all rule change proposals go through a vetting process through multiple channels. So while there’s no guarantee your proposal will get pushed through, it’s a useful way to put something on the governing body’s radar that could lead to future changes. It’s always an alphabet soup of plans when it comes to horses, but remember that it does do wonders for an event to have entries on opening day. This means they can more accurately forecast numbers for things like stabling rentals, porta-potties and staff or volunteers, pay deposits on time and overall get just a wink more sleep at night. You can find out more and enter Heritage Park here.

We’re very sorry to see that Caroline Powell (NZL)’s former top-level horse, Up Up and Away, passed away recently at the age of 19. After his career with Caroline, which included three CCI5* completions, “Russell” went on to bring along rising star Grace Botterell, who completed her first Advanced with the Irish gelding owned by Cameron and Mary Crawford just over a year ago. You can read more in a tribute on Horse & Hound here.

Though she be but little, she is fierce,” wrote William Shakespeare. A more accurate quote couldn’t be found to describe Allison Springer’s spitfire mare, No May Moon. Owned and bred by Nancy Winter, who’s a full-on Connemara fan, No May Moon has the personality to match her great success in the sport (with more surely yet to come!). Meet “Mayzie” and go “behind the stall door” with The Chronicle of the Horse here.

We have some new FEI Level 4 cross country designers in the house! Just named to the level, which grants clearance to design at the CCI5* and Olympic levels, are Australia’s Clayton Fredericks and Ewan Kellet, joining just 12 other designers with the same designation in the world. The announcement comes with good timing, as the Olympic Games will usually (not always) work with a cross country designer from the host nation, and Australia’s turn is coming with Brisbane 2032. Read more on our two newest Level 4s here.

Are You Cooling Your Hot Horse Correctly?

When the temperatures rise, smart horse owners rely on smart science to keep their equine partners safe. ☀️💦 Knowing how to cool your horse quickly and effectively after summer rides or competitions is more than just good horsemanship—it’s essential for their health.

💡 KPP Tip: Focus cold hosing on the largest muscle groups—shoulders, chest, flanks, and hindquarters—for rapid cooling.

Before you tack up, protect your horse from the inside out by maintaining hydration and replacing lost electrolytes with Summer Games® Electrolyte or Summer Games® Plus paste. Designed to mimic the actual composition of horse sweat, these trusted Kentucky Performance Products supplements help support optimal recovery, hydration, and performance during hot weather.

🌡️ Remember: When heat + humidity climbs, so does your horse’s risk. Stay alert, know their normal vitals, and plan ahead—your horse will thank you.

The inaugural Scone Palace International Horse Trials (August 21-24) has announced the Georgie Campbell Foundation as its supported charity—a touching tribute that brings both heart and heritage to the event’s debut. Created in memory of the late 5* rider Georgie Campbell, who tragically died in a cross country fall in May 2024, the Foundation works to support young eventers and promote safer, more sustainable sport. Proceeds from guided course walks at Scone will benefit the charity, whose connection to Scotland runs deep through Georgie’s family history and her early cross country success at Blair Castle.
