Last year, Madeline Backus had an incredible rise to stardom with her long time partner, PS Arianna. This year, she was awarded the inaugural Wilton Fair Grant, and went over the pond to work with Irish international rider Austin O’Connor at Attington Stud in Thame, Oxforshire with two horses. Her goals were high, and her fairytale was becoming reality, but as it is in the horse world, plans don’t always follow a straight line. [Villains and Victories Throughout My Fairytale]

Friday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

When you are the most handsomest.

Yesterday I went cross country schooling with my best Thoroughbred, Turkey, and a student at the unimaginably cool farm, Win Green. If you’re from really any part of Virginia, you know the farm, and you know how important it is to have a thoughtfully designed cross country course at your fingertips. The owner of the farm, Leslie Clark, passed away this week, and I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge her contribution to the eventing community at large.

Win Green is by far the best place to school, with tons of questions asked at all different levels, and a resource that has seen hundreds of horses and riders through their careers. Leslie, thank you so much for everything you have given us all, and we’re so glad that your daughter is carrying on the tradition with your farm and continuing to let us all come over and teach our horses and our jockeys how to be better cross country experts.

Area III Adult Riders got to have fun in a five-day summer camp clinic with Kim Severson recently. Camp included three days of jumping schooling sessions (show jumping and cross-country— riders’ choice!) from Intermediate to Beginner Novice with Kim, who took the time to get to know each rider and horse. She tailored the lessons to meet each rider’s needs, making sure each rider understood and performed properly before moving on. The camp, organized by Area III Adult Rider Coordinator Kim Keeton of Athens, Ga., took place from May 28-June 1 at The Vista Schooling and Event Center in Aiken. EN #TBT: 8 Life Hacks to Summer Survival

It’s HOT out there, and it’s only June! For this week’s #TBT post, we’re rewinding to this 2014 list of pro summer survival tips from Kate Samuels.

A benefit to summer wake up times? Sweet sunrises.

A benefit to summer wake up times? Sweet sunrises.

Remember a few short weeks ago when we were all moaning and groaning about the cold, the snow and the unseasonably long winter weather? Well, no worries because Mother Nature knows just how to be hilarious and is officially here with summer. It’s not that I don’t like summer, it’s just that I would prefer to not be coated in sweat for 18 hours of every day, and I feel bad for my horses when they are dive-bombed by vicious green or black flies, and my tan lines are literally the worst thing you’ve ever seen in your life right now.

Summer survival is nothing fancy … when you have a normal life. When you have a horse life, it’s a little more complicated. You have to worry about dehydration, heat stroke (hey-o!), cruelty to animals, cruelty to children, sunburns to end all sunburns and general hatred towards the sun. I think I must genetically be ill adapted toward hot weather, so I’ve come up with a pretty essential list of how to properly survive the hot months when you’re outside all day.

1. Get Up Early: Look, I have narcolepsy and I can manage to drag my butt out of bed a little earlier in the summer months, so there is no reason why you can’t too! In all seriousness, while those first 10 minutes might be the worst 10 minutes of your day, you’ll thank me when you experience one or two hours of relative cool weather. Your horses will be ready to come in from a night’s worth of grazing, and they will also delight in the idea of not sweating ten billion gallons every time you ride them. I ride the horses I love most big competition horses in the morning because they work the hardest. Then, they can nap all day. Bonus: Sunrises are awesome, and you will rule Instagram with them.

2. Iced Coffee: This is integral to success of step one, getting up early and not hating your life. Who doesn’t love iced coffee? Except it’s totally gross when you get it and it’s just hot coffee that somebody added ice to and now it’s all watery and blegh. So here’s a life-changing strategy: cold brew it overnight! I don’t care that you know the secret to my success — it’s this recipe for cold brew coffee. So easy a monkey could do it, AND it totally decreases the amount of time you spend on your coffee production in the morning AND it’s the most delicious and refreshing thing ever. Get your paws on this recipe here.

3: Hydration — Electrolyte Pills & Horsey Thirst: This one’s kind of a no brainer, but sometimes there just isn’t enough water in the world to keep up with the kind of sweating that is going on. I find that a half and half mix of gatorade and water keeps me feeling good, but sometimes I almost feel like my stomach is bloating from liquid consumption, which is where my electrolyte pills come in handy. I use Hammer Endurolytes, and I take one in the morning to keep me going strong all day. You can get them at athletic shops or online.

While we’re at it, don’t forget to keep your poor ponies hydrated! Make sure that no matter where they are, they  have a fresh and clean supply of water, nothing with dead bugs in it because I hear that makes it taste nasty. Summer months mean electrolytes for the working horses (I like Summer Games from Kentucky Performance Products) and even sometimes for the oldies too.  For those who have trouble with regular drinking at shows or at home, Horse Quencher is a godsend. Get you some.

Go ahead: be jealous of my awesome sun hat.

Go ahead — be jealous of my awesome sun hat.

4. Hats (#Mindyourmelon and Otherwise): I learned from Kim Severson that if you’re going to be spending any time in an arena, in the boiling hot sun, you better get yourself a sweet sunhat. Bonus points if you look stylish as hell in it. Also, don’t be ashamed to go pure nerd and buy an EquiVisor because although you might look dorky, secretly everybody is jealous of your shady face. Let’s be real here, there are already plenty of really leathery, wrinkly old horse people out there. Do yourself a favor and don’t add to that number. Also, you know, it’s pretty bad for you.

5. Dunking Your Head In A Bucket of Water: When all else fails, here’s a tried and true (if a bit messy) method for you. When you feel like your head is going to explode and your face is the color of a tomato, this will make you feel like a whole new person. Take your sweaty, gross, sticky head and dunk it in a bucket of cool water. Now, for the next little while, you can have cool water dripping down your back (let’s face it, your shirt was soaking wet anyway) and it’s actually a great way to emergency cool. Almost as good as …

6. Popsicles: Listen, this is real life — if you don’t have popsicles in your freezer right now, I don’t know how to deal with you. I’m not even sure how to explain this obvious answer to the heat, other than it feels like an icy, arctic, delicious party in your mouth and nothing can be better after a day in the hot sun.

Leo says, stay cool in the river if you can!

Leo says, “Stay cool in the river if you can!”

7: Fly Control: While this might not be directly related to the hot hot heat, it’s certainly amongst the most disgusting side effects of summer months. I swear to god, if another deer fly bites me on the cheek while I’m enjoying a relaxing hack through the woods … There are, sadly, not a lot of ways to deter those buggers when you’re away from home, but keeping your barn in proper fly killing condition is important. Fly Predators, if you have a muck heap near the barn, are totally amazing. They eat flies — what more could you ask for? Also, I have these things that I hang in the aisle called Trap ‘N Toss Fly Traps that hold up to 10,000 flies and suck them into their watery deaths with fly sex pheromones. Take that, nasty barn flies!

8: Don’t Be A Dummy: If you can avoid it, try not to ride at the peak heat times of the day. If you absolutely have to, schedule the horses that can go on a hack, or ride indoors if you’re lucky enough to have that option. I’ve had heat stroke enough times to tell you that it really sucks, and feeling generally concussed for a while just isn’t that cool. Make sure you take enough walk breaks during rides to avoid overheating for both you and the horse. Survive!

Today is the first day of summer! I’m celebrating with some early morning cross country schooling, followed by some heavily predicted summer thunderstorms. Also, to be fair, there will probably be some low key sunburn, lots of gatorade, and a pile of sweaty riding clothes. Honestly, if this doesn’t define summer, what does?

While Tom Crisp was competing at Luhmuhlen, a fire ripped through his stables. Starting around 11 p.m. on Saturday, the fire wiped out an entire top yard of nine stables, a hay barn, tack and feed rooms, workshop and a coach house. Luckily no horses were in the barns, and no humans were hurt either. Tom thinks that it was caused by careless cigarette smoking, but doesn’t have CCTV to show anything ominous. Friday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

This made me laugh waaaay more than it should have.

Happy Friday everyone! I love when people who have weekday jobs ask me what I’m up to on the weekend, like it’s going to be any different than the rest of the days? Ok yeah maybe I’m a little less available than on other days, as opposed to the “normal” human schedule of being more available on the weekends. Sorry, but not really that sorry. Ok, maybe I’m sorry that I don’t get two days a week to sleep in, that I would definitely be into, but you know, #horses.

Hot on Horse Nation: An Update on the PAST Act

As kill pen bails gain popularity on social media, it’s important to know what you’re getting into when you go save a horse from a slaughter auction. With too many horses being bred every year, it’s inevitable that many of them end up at less than desirable auctions. Yes, it can be a way to save a life and get a great horse in the process, but you should do your research before diving in head first. Luckily, we have Horse Nation on the task to help you make good life decisions. [So You Want To Rescue An Auction Horse]

I know everyone is dying for a Turkey update, so here you go: he is officially entered in his first recognized event. NO PRESSURE TURKEY. Only everybody expects you to be a superstar. Honestly I’ll just be pumped to jump all the jumps and finish with a happy horse that feels like a rockstar, because really what more could you ask? Sadly I think he will be mightily offended by Beginner Novice, as he has recently decided that he is a complete champion and should start at Preliminary height. He doesn’t know about qualification rules, he’s just a horse.

Important OTTB retraining technique: the coffee hack.

Now that the monsoon of May is seemingly over in Virginia, it was closely followed by the five days of hives, which is subsequently accompanied by the great balding of June. My lovely sensitive little drama queen of a TB basically gets hives every time he gets rained on (which was a lot) and when the hives evaporate, he gets little cruddy patches, and when you clean them, all his hair falls out. So, he has dapples AND bald patches, which is a really good look.

Jan & Waterfront at Jersey Fresh. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

This week we are celebrating the life of Waterfront, Jan Byyny’s three-star mount for many years, as he passed away recently. He was owned and loved by Keelin Redmond since he retired from upper level eventing, and died at age 22. Tukie was infamously often a bridesmaid, finishing in second place at numerous international competitions, but persevering with the heart of a lion. He was a horse that absolutely loved the sport of eventing, and gave Keelin many years of laughs competing at the lower levels. Here’s to Waterfront! [Surefire Eventing: Remembering Waterfront]

Sponsorship: the holy grail for professional riders. How do you get sponsors, and more importantly, how do you keep them? Yes, being one of the top riders in the country helps, but even if you’re just working your way up the levels, you can pursue sponsorship from a variety of companies, and help them promote their products along the way. Pro tip: get good at social media! [Sponsorship Maintenance]

Summer means more time to ride, and better weather in which to enjoy your equine buds. It also carries some extra new risks for colic, so proper care throughout the hot season is imperative to your horse’s health. Access and consumption of clean water is first and foremost, and keeping a fairly regular schedule during the extreme weather of summer is also important. [Top 3 Tips to Avoid Colic During Summer]

VAHT is this weekend! One of my favorite events, my hometown event if you will, which attracts a huge amount of competitors from around the country. There is really nothing like it, with rings and rings of action all up and down the hillside, and all three phases running at different levels at any given time. I love the Virginia Horse Center, and I feel very privileged to have it so close, it’s such an excellent venue for everyone in the area. See you guys this weekend!

News From Around the Globe:

The big question on horse enthusiasts’ minds: will Justify win the Triple Crown? The undefeated big red colt, trained by Bob Baffert, is on the path to perhaps becoming the 13th horse in history to win all three legs of the Triple Crown, but can he equal American Pharoah? There are lots of things going against him, with no career as a two-year-old, and six races in 110 days, not to mention two races in deep mud that would suck the life out of any young athlete. People are optimistic though, so anything is possible. [Will He Win? Experts Weigh In]

PONY POWER! 13.2 hand Lakevale Toyman (Tommy) is entered in the CCI* next month at the Melbourne International Three Day Event. He is the smallest pony to ever contest this class. He has already completed seven Preliminary events, and two CIC* competitions. Holy cow, there is even a video of his cuteness and fierceness on cross country. And a fan page. [Small But Mighty]

Eventing training video alert! If you’re not competing this weekend, but looking for some inspiration in your arena, be sure to check out this video from William Micklem. William coaches riders on the importance of maintaining softness in the rein so as not to interfere with the horse while he’s jumping. He instructs a rider with a nervous horse through an exercise to keep the horse from rushing the fence by circling left and right in front of the fence. [Eventing Training Online]

So, this is my first year entering the Retired Racehorse Project, and so far, it’s a lot of fun. Yes, I do have a complicated beautiful drama queen of a horse that I love riding, but I also really love being in the FB group for all the trainers, and watching everyone else’s progress! It’s a super fun community and everybody has such different horses and different approaches to training, I highly recommend it if you’re thinking of going next year!

Rain on the Fair Hill cross country course.

The rain on the east coast this week has been insane. So much so that Fair Hill has announced that they’ve cancelled the event this weekend, because it is literally under water. However, don’t despair! The Virginia Horse Trials (May 24 – 27) and Waredaca (June 2 – 3) have both responded with a very generous offer to all competitors hoping to get a run in by waiving their late fee and accepting entries to their event next weekend for the disappointed people entered at Fair Hill. News From Around the Globe:

Well, it’s gonna be a wet Preakness this weekend, but we already know that Justify likes the mud. The unbeaten colt trained by Bob Baffert seems to have recovered from his bruised heel following his Kentucky Derby win, and several of his previous challengers have dropped out of this second leg of the Triple Crown. Drawing post number 7 (same as he did at the Derby), he’s the overwhelming 1-2 favorite, with the only seeming contester being Good Magic at 3-1. [Preakness Draw: Odds, Contenders and Post Positions]

A fun game to play: could eventing champions of the past make it in the current format and competition? In 1994, Dorothy Trapp and the OTTB Molokai came home from The Hague with an Individual Silver medal from the WEG, only a few time penalties on steeplechase holding them back from gold. However, Molokai was not known for his dressage, so could he make it in modern day eventing? COTH goes back in time to find out. [TBT 1994 WEG]

Great Meadow International hosts the only North American leg of the Nations Cup, and it’s coming up in just a few months. Though the Great Meadow International (GMI) is a young event, Great Meadow’s eventing history dates way back. The Middleburg Horse Trials moved to from Dresden Farm to Great Meadow in 1985. In 1987 the horse trials was still held at Great Meadow but was renamed the Virginia Horse Trials. Following the 1988 Virginia International Two-Day, the horse trials moved to Glenwood Park and was again called the Middleburg Horse Trial. [USEA Events A-Z: Great Meadow International]

Schramm Sesh of the Week

Jimmie and Dom Schramm have teamed up with Kentucky Equine Research to provide an inside look into their conditioning program using KER ClockIt Sport. Each week we’ll share an example ride and some notes of what the Schramms look for as their horses progress.

This week, Jimmie is prepping Eclaire for her first CCI1* at Bromont, which takes place June 7-11. This session is the seven-year-old German Sport Horse’s first real hill gallop.

“I did not push her as much as I could have,” explained Jimmie. “I wanted to get a baseline for her on how she felt doing these two intervals up the hill.”

“Her heart rate hit the zones I wanted them to, and she recovered quite quickly,” Jimmie pointed out. “She did very well and it did not seem to take much out of her.”

“All of the information is good to know for training going forward,” she said. “I think next time I will take her up an extra time, or go to Nelson’s Hill which is just a longer hill.”

May thunderstorms bring … muddy horses and pretty rainbows??

Ah spring … the time of year when you have to pull out the old tick jar. You know the one. The jar that lives in your barn near where you groom the horses, is filled with rubbing alcohol, and usually labelled with some sort of crap illustration of a dead tick (at least mine is). Now daily grooming also includes a rather aggressive and invasive inspection of all the weird hidden folds of your horse, including armpits and between the back legs, for teeny tiny little blood suckers. This is an age old tradition which is equal parts satisfying and disgusting, and regular humans would be revolted to hear that we collect them in jars.

As equestrians, we focus on the nutrition and fitness of our horses, so why don’t we put the same effort into our own fitness and nutrition? Luckily, we have a video of Daniel Stewart to help you be the best you can be. Coach Stewart explains that because equestrians lead such active lives, we don’t necessarily need to spend 40 minutes in the gym six days a week. By focusing on exercises that support the muscles we use when riding and making them harder than they have to be, short high-intensity workouts can be an effective way of increasing rider fitness. The British Horse Society (BHS) has stated that they don’t believe the sanctions against Oliver Townend at Badminton were high enough. Townend was warned by the FEI for overuse of his whip on both mounts, Cooley SRS and Ballaghmor Class, but given no yellow card or fines for his actions. He has issued two sincere apologies since then, but the BHS is taking the matter up with the FEI and believes he deserves higher punishment. [Townend Not Sanctioned Enough]

This week, Dom is prepping a seven-year-old Irish gelding, Whitford, for the CCI1* class at Bromont coming up this June.

“Whitford had an easy winter,” explained Dom. “We are trying to improve his fitness so that he will be ready to compete at the 1* level.”

Dom works him on a track, doing a 20-minute trot followed by three five-minute canter sets with increasing speed, and finishing with a sprint. You can see the end of the last set is the fastest sprint, where the horse’s speed reaches 522 m/min and his heart rate reaches 187 bpm.

For Whitford’s current training program, they plan to alternate this routine with hill work every fourth day. Hill work is great component in training programs because it is an easy way to increase heart rate without having to increase speed.

Maybe the best road sign I’ve ever seen.

Man. Yesterday I had an awesome jump lesson with the one and only Lainey Ashker, with my young OTTB boy Turkey. I’m taking him to the Retired Racehorse Project this fall, and he’s an athletic little bugger, who likes bucking a little more than he should, so I needed some help. The lesson was exactly what I needed, and turns out I just need to ride my horse a little more like he knows what he’s doing (he absolutely doesn’t) so that he gets more confident and forward and has to use his little brain more often!

Colic is every horse owner’s nightmare, but there are definitely steps you can take to minimize your risk. Because colic is both common and seemingly indiscriminate in the horses it afflicts, there’s a general belief that, for the most part, it just happens and there’s not much we can do other than be educated to catch it early. The fact of the matter is that we can do a lot more to prevent colic than we think. While some colics may be unavoidable, it’s a myth that there’s nothing we can do to prevent most colic. That’s because we CAN improve our management methods to promote better digestive health in horses and reduce the risk of many of the most common types of colic. [Monday Myth: We Can’t Prevent Colic]

This week, Jimmie takes Eclaire, a seven-year-old German sport horse, through her fourth preliminary outing. She starts with a short warm up then continues into her course. This session is Eclaire’s first cross-country of the year with hills.

“As you can see it really pushed her into high percentage zones for her heart rate, especially towards the end of the course, which to me means she needs to be a bit fitter on the hills,” explains Jimmie.

Eclaire’s speed drops between 366 m/min and 400 m/min through the combinations on course. Making this adjustment more quickly is something Jimmie has been working on with her.

“When it takes a longer time to get her back to a combination-type canter, I end up having time faults,” Jimmie explains. “It is good for me to see where time is being wasted.”

“I wish I’d left ClockIt running for a bit longer to see how long it took her to get back to a resting heart rate, but it was a warmer day and we were looking to cool her out quickly and get her tack off.”

Badminton always feels like some sort of crazy whiplash right after Kentucky to me, but in a good way. I mean, it’s basically madness that tons of riders compete in the most difficult competition in North America and then hop off their horses on Sunday and fly across the ocean only to do it all over again. Do these people not need sleep? Do they not need to recover? Clearly we are not worthy.

News From Around the Globe:

Former USEA President Kevin Baumgardner competed Wembley through the CIC3* level before handing over the reins to Tamie Smith. Now she’s sitting in a very good position after dressage yesterday with the 15-year-old grey gelding at his four-star debut. When Kevin realized that his work responsibilities didn’t allow for him to pursue the top levels with a clearly talented horse, he offered Tamie the opportunity to keep developing the horse. The final pair has been accepted off the waitlist at Badminton following two more withdrawals this week. Michael and Trish Ryan removed both their horses, Dunlough Striker and Dunlagh Eclipse, which allowed Nina Dalton and Absolut Opposition to take the final slot. That leaves 92 as the current entry numbers, with withdrawals expected from both Oliver Townend and Tina Cook, as they have more than two horses entered but can only compete two. [Badminton Entry List Finalized]

#TimesUp in the horse world as we see a Safe Sport Code of Practice adopted by the American Horse Council. The code states, in part: “To behave ethically necessitates an awareness of power differentials among all persons involved.” The code is “intended to inform ethical judgments as persons consider asymmetric power relations among themselves and others they work with in professional roles.” [Safe Sport Code Adopted by AHC]

Get ready to get down at the 6th Annual EN Tailgate Party! The festivities take place during LRK3DE cross country in tailgating spaces S294 and S295, near the jog strip and announcer’s tower overlooking the infield. Stop by to get EN temporary-tatted up, schmooze with a certain celebrity Chinch, quench your thirst, enjoy a snack, and win some sweet swag.

The tradition continues. Photo by Nicole Severino.

You know, Maggie gets to be the first one to talk about the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event each year with her Wednesday N&N, but I get the honor of talking about the first day of actual competition! Also, I get Thanksgiving every year, which is basically the trump card, TBH. But back to Kentucky! I’m not there but I’ll be following along on my rides tomorrow while doing super safe TV watching and trot sets. Hope my horses don’t spook.

News From Around the Globe:

Devon Horse Show has announced the return of the $50,000 Arena Eventing this May. In order to be qualified, horses and riders must have attained a qualifying score at CCI2* level, or be competing in 1.4m jumper classes. Last year it was Sara Kozumplik Murphy, but the competition was fierce and wild, so get ready for some action next month! [Devon Brings Back Arena Eventing]

Elisa Wallace and Colleen Rutledge made a special visit to the UK Children’s Hospital this Tuesday, spending time with kids undergoing treatment there, and talking to them about the upcoming competition. This fantastic tradition is a longstanding habit of event riders when they come to Kentucky 4*, and shows the heart that exists in not just horses, but riders in our sport. [Kentucky 3 Day]

The Carolina Horse Park Foundation has announced a new unrecognized competition series to come this year.  The Devoucoux TallBoots Hunter Jumper Schooling Series and Derby Cross presented by Breezeway Sporthorse and Diagnostic is a new lineup of local competitions dedicated to helping riders to sharpen the fundamental skills required for success in the show ring. They offer prize money too! [Carolina Hunter Jumper Series]

Friday News & Notes from Kentucky Equine Research

Olympic carrots!

Our favorite people from Kentucky Equine Research are returning as the Official Equine Nutritionists for the World Equestrian Games! They’ve done this role admirably before, and will be supplying reliable feed and forage for a literal army of horses coming to Tryon later this year, and of course, carrots too. We’re so thrilled that Olympians will have direct access to the experts at KER on how to get their horses ready for the big week and keep them healthy throughout.

News From Around the Globe:

Attention Kentucky 4*-bound tailgate pros! EN is excited to host its annual “Insanity in the Middle” Tailgate Party on cross country day, but we need a little help with the set-up. If you have a truck and access to tailgate furnishings (two or three pop-up tents, tables, coolers, etc.), we have a platinum tailgate parking pass and some cross country day passes for you! Please email us at [email protected].

Kentucky Equine Research has been named the Official Equine Nutritionist of the FEI World Equestrian Games Tryon 2018 (WEG). This is a familiar role for the company, which has coordinated the logistics of importing, controlling, and distributing feed, forage, and bedding at major international equestrian competitions for more than 20 years. Horse owners know that consistency is key to feeding and managing healthy horses, especially in the midst of travel and competition. When show schedules take horses across international borders, biosecurity concerns and import procedures make staying on familiar feed a challenge. [KER Takes on Feeding the WEG]

Whether you’ve been a working student or employed them (or both!), you know how important the position is to the equestrian community. The exchange of work for knowledge is one of the oldest traditions in the world, and still alive and thriving in the eventing community. Choosing to get a working student is a big commitment for a professional, and it’s good to know how and when. Jennifer McFall walks us through how to make sure you have the best experience possible in this article from USEA. [Taking On A Working Student]

This week we can see Weldon, a young horse, doing a jog set. This is easy work for him! ClockIt can give you insight on the comparative fitness of your horses. By doing the same routine with multiple horses and monitoring their heart rate and recovery time, you can see which horse is more fit. By comparing similar works by the same horse, you can also see how an individual’s fitness progresses through the season.

Check back next week for another Schramm Sesh! Want to gain insight into your horse’s fitness? Try KER ClockIt Sport. The free app helps take the guesswork out of equine fitness by monitoring heart rate, speed, distance and altitude during rides. EN’s guides to the app explain all the details: 7 Reasons to Download KER ClockIt Sport and How To Get the Most Out of KER ClockIt Sport.

Thursday News & Notes from Taylor Harris Insurance Services (THIS)

Remember last week when I was all “Oh ha ha ha the world is conspiring against me going to this show” WELL GUESS WHAT. I went to the show, and my baby horse pitched a fit inside the trailer while I wasn’t there, and split his head right open. Got himself five stitches to celebrate his fifth birthday, and didn’t even get to compete. Somebody just whap me upside the head the next time I think pre-competition week signs and warnings aren’t a real thing.

We all know Thoroughbred blood is important in the modern Event horse, but how much do you really want? The USEA interviewed expert judge, commentator and founder of Goresbridge Go for Gold Sale, Chris Ryan, on just how to consider your TB blood percentages in a young horse for future four star victory. Take FischerRocanna FST: 64%. La Biosthetique Sam? 76%. FischerTakinou: 84%. The key is having over 50%, and honestly over 75% is best. [Zero To One Hundred: TB Blood in the Modern Eventer]

This year, the FEI is increasing the amount of human drug testing that occurs at International competitions. While we’re all pretty used to watching what our horses come in contact with, we aren’t that accustomed to thinking about ourselves. In an effort to comply with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards, riders now need to be better educated on what it means to be competing in a clean sport. [Increased Human Doping Tests]

Friday News & Notes from Kentucky Equine Research

Maybe the cutest groom at Ocala CCI2*. Photo courtesy of Windsor Equestrian Center FB.

I entered my baby OTTB, Turkey, in his first three phase event for this weekend (which is also his birthday weekend!) so obviously as soon as I sent the entry in, the world decided to conspire against me. That night, he pulled a hind shoe, which I’m not super familiar with, but he’s an expert. I think it has to do with his penchant for rearing straight up and spinning around when he’s in turnout, for funzies, you know. Then, I look at the weather forecast and there is a straight up hurricane predicted for the entire day of the show. Perfect. Can’t wait.

In its 30th year, Fair Hill kicks off its International Horse Trials today. Dressage for the CIC3*, CIC2*, Advanced and Intermediate start today on the Gallaher side of the property, with show jumping in the same main arena on Saturday morning and cross country in the afternoon. Lots of riders are using this event as a last prep for Kentucky, so it’s definitely one to watch! [30 Years of Eventing at Fair Hill]

Trainers: we’re not hard to shop for. We appreciate the kind of stuff that we can legitimately use day in and day out, and will keep our poor bodies functioning so we can keep teaching you, and live to see another day with relatively little pain. Think about coffee mugs that keep your nectar of the gods beverage hot for hours and hours. Sun protection? Check. Comfy socks? Yeah, we like those too. [Gifts Your Trainer Will Love]

We love nothing more than pretty pictures of beautiful horses at competitions. Galway Downs was just two weeks ago, but we’re still reliving the glory with this incredible photo gallery from the USEA. [Through the Lens: Galway Downs]

Interested in learning how to think like an eventing dressage judge? Marilyn Payne’s Applewood Farm in Califon, New Jersey is hosting a Dressage Session II Training Program on May 7-8, where attendees will develop the judge’s eye by utilizing live horses and riders in full tests. This is an excellent opportunity for those who want to get inside the judge’s head as well as see and hear the new 2018 USEF dressage tests dissected and explained by panelists Marilyn Payne and Cindy DePorter.
