Marilyn Little & RF Scandalous Shine in MARS Great Meadow CCI4*-S

Marilyn Little and RF Scandalous have come out of quarantine as strong as ever, taking the early lead in the 2020 MARS Great Meadow International CCI4*-S.

With the majority of the calendar in limbo, Marilyn elected to keep “Kitty,” a 15-year-old Oldenburg mare (Carry Gold x Richardia, by Lario) owned by Mrs Jacqueline Mars, Mr & Mrs Phoebe & Michael Manders, in Florida this season, and chipping away at dressage and jumper shows.

“It’s definitely been a challenge to be down there during the summer trying to find all the events and check all the boxes and be as prepared as you can be,” Marilyn told The Chronicle. “Fortunately she’s had a lot of experience, and she feels great. I’m super excited with how she feels, and she’s jumping well, so I’m looking forward to the weekend.”

“Like everybody, this has been a bit of a different year, and I’ve had to get creative to make it all work. It’s been a year where it feels like a lot of doors have closed, and I’m trying to reopen some and find a way forward. It’s a bit of work and requires some creativity,” she said.

Marilyn and Kitty earned a 21.8 today, a new dressage record for this division.

“So many events have been canceled, and this has been such a beacon on the calendar for all of the riders,” she said. “To have a place like this to come during a pandemic is really special. Without MARS’ support, this would never have happened. The feeling from the riders, we’re all just really grateful, and everyone’s happy to be here.”

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Cooley Quicksilver. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Cooley Quicksilver sit in second place. The Monster Partnership’s 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding (Womanizer x Kylemore Crystal) earned a 26.1, a personal best for the rising star in Liz’s yard.

Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Hannah Sue Burnett and longtime partner Harbour Pilot hold third overnight. The 17-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding (Cruising x Shannon), who is owned by Jaqueline Mars, kick off the weekend on a score of 26.8.

Phillip Dutton is fourth with Luke 140 on a score of 28. Owned by the Luke 140 Syndicate, Phillip is borrowing the ride while his usual rider, Boyd Martin, remains on the mend.

Colleen Rutledge piloted her own Covert Rights into fifth place on a score of 28.5.

The remaining 44 pairs will continue with dressage tomorrow for judges Peter Gray and Valerie Vizcarrando beginning at at 9 am eastern. Coverage for this division will start on the Horse & Country live stream at 2 pm eastern.

Sharon White and Claus 63. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Sharon White and her own Claus 63 have stepped out as the early leaders in the brand new CCI3*-L division. Sharon and the 8-year-old Holsteiner (Catoo x Tina II, by Levisto) were the only pair to sqeak into sub-30 territory, carrying a score of 29.5 into the jumping phases.

Benjamin Noonan and his own Keep Kitty, a 9-year-old Hanoverian (King Julio x Hauptstutbuch Emelie) mare follow in second on a score of 31.2. Third place currently belongs to Katherine Brown and her 7-year-old Hanoverian Carnaby.

The exciting cross country phase begins for these folks bright and early tomorrow at 7 am. Follow the live stream so you don’t miss a second of the action.

Thirteen Through Great Meadow CCI3*-L First Horse Inspection

Sharon White and Claus 63. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Masks are officially the must have fashion accessory this season — literally, you MUST wear one. Of course, all participants were delightfully compliant at the first horse inspection for the 2020 MARS Great Meadow International, but just because it’s mandatory, doesn’t mean it can’t be cute. Sharon White showed off hers in her signature orange, Claire Robinson opted for an all black ensemble. Others decided for a traditional light blue medical grade accessory.

Masks aside, we are very excited to follow the coverage for GMI’s first ever CCI3*-L where thirteen contestants have lined up to test the inaugural division. Of this group, only one pair, Alexandra Baugh and I Spye, were held in the trot up, but subsequently passed upon re-inspection. That leaves the group intact as they move ahead to dressage starting Thursday at 8 am eastern.

We are lucky enough to share a gorgeous gallery from the ever talented Shannon Brinkman. Her and her team will be on site all weekend capturing all the action.

Stay tuned for much more from GMI.

What a weekend it was for our friends in Florida! The Ocala Summer HT hosted a whopping 17 divisions, and our friend Lisa Madren was on site, camera in hand, to capture the action. She’s rounded up galleries of the top finishers in each division. Congratulations to those who had a great weekend (cough, cough, Leslie Law who won six divisions!).

Tuesday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

Since the second I knew about my sister-in-law’s pregnancy, I have been plotting my path to horse crazy aunt. Little Aerilyn had a newborn onesie and I’ve been pushing the riding agenda basically as much as possible since then. Yesterday, she came out to visit with some of our family farm animals and I think she’s just smitten. We’re not related by blood, but that can’t stop the horse bug.

Tuesday News:

Eventing fans all over the country are still reeling from the sudden death of Arthur, Allison Springer’s longtime partner. The cheeky Irish Chestnut kept fans on the edge of their seats during cross country, but he was a phenomenal athlete loved by many. [Five-Star Eventer Arthur Dies At 21]

Preview the Stacked Great Meadow International Entries

Hannah Sue Burnett and Lukeswell. Photo by Shelby Allen.

With the cancellation of the USEA American Eventing Championships — among other things — Great Meadow International has been pushed even more into prominence. There are a whopping 75 entries in the CCI4*-S division, 49 in the CCI3*-S, and 12 in the new CCI3*-L.

With so much of the 2020 season on pause, horses and riders will be gunning for a spectacular event. Take a look at all the heavy hitters on the entry status.

Phillip Dutton has five entered in the class: Z, Fernhill Singapore, and Sea of Clouds along with Luke 140 and Blackfoot Mystery, who he is piloting for Boyd Martin.

Winner of the 2018 edition Will Colman, returns with TKS Cooley, Tight Lines and Dondante.

Buck Davidson is likely to be the busiest of the bunch with six entries: Erroll Gobey, Copper Beach, Carlevo, Ms. Poppins, Morswood, and Business Class, the latter three who he is riding for Allie Knowles.

Liz Halliday-Sharp will surely bring the heat with her three four-star rides. Her lineup includes Fernhill By Night, Flash Cooley, Deniro Z, and Cooley Quicksilver.

The competition kicks off Wednesday, August 19th. Horse & Country TV is offering live streaming with commentary from Karen O’Connor and Sinead Halpin.

Livestream Schedule:

Friday, Aug. 21: CCI3*-L, CCI2*-S and Preliminary cross country; CCI4*-S dressage

Saturday, Aug. 22: Show jumping all day

Sunday, Aug. 23: CCI3*-S and CCI4*-S XC all day

Stay tuned for more from GMI!

Masked Up: EN’s Top Picks for COVID-19 Face Coverings

It looks like COVID-19 isn’t going away anytime soon, so if you haven’t already, it’s time to invest in a quality mask (review US Equestrian’s updated mandate that face coverings are unless mounted/driving here) — and we’re of the opinion that if you can get something with a horse print on it, you should. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites to support our equestrian retailers.

This is by no means exhaustive. I’ve you have a mask that we need to add to our rotation, Drop us a link in the comments or email [email protected] to be featured in a Part II.

West Coast photographer Terri Miller-Steiner is now in the business of mask making. She’s got two styles available:

Contoured Masks: These are 100% cotton with adjustable elastic ear straps and a bendable metal nose bridge. They are 2 layer, with a slot for a filter in between. A selection of cool images on the outside, and a message for your eyes only on the inside. Available in multiple sizes. These are created on demand. As of 7/15/2020 expect an estimated 25 business days from order to ship. New designs are being added weekly, so bookmark the store to see what’s new! A portion of proceeds will go to the San Diego Food Bank. Made in Canada

Pleated Masks: These are a soft cotton/poly blend with elastic ear straps. They are 2 layers with a slot for a filter in between. One size fits all, but both my husband and I find them very comfortable. A limited selection of designs, also made on demand, but the turn around time seems to be running 10-15 business days, so a little bit shorter than for Contour Masks. Made in USA. Made from layers of cotton woven with anti-microbial silver, recycled fabric and air mesh the SportMask is lightweight and breathable. With many of our spring horse trials being rescheduled, that presents us with some midweek eventing action at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. One of the most scenic venues in the country (in my humble opinion), the Virginia Horse Trials kicks off today. There are quite a lot of competitors across the three-day competition, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on the Advanced/Intermediate and the CCI3*-S.

Tuesday News:

At some point, every single one of us has experienced fear while riding. Fear is often connected to a negative attitude, even when you aren’t consciously aware of it. Ignoring a fear won’t do your riding any good. Conquoring it with a good coach is the way to go. [Key Steps to Safe Cross-Country Riding, Part Four: Overcoming Fear and Changing a Negative Attitude]

It was a big weekend for the partnership of Erin Kellerhouse and Woodford Reserve at the Galway Downs Summer H.T., they won the Advanced division. This horse is a real powerhouse who Erin has been carefully and strategically brining along. “Woody” moved up to the level this year. Over the weekend they added only 6.4 cross country time penalties for a final result of 37.1.

Tuesday Video from Flexible Fit Equestrian USA: An Update from Everyone’s Favorite Tailless Eventer

The people have spoken, here’s an update from EN’s favorite tailless eventer, Chasin’ Tail! This weekend Bear, an Appendix Quarter Horse, and former Jumper Nation editor Meagan DeLisle finished third at Champagne Run at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Bear earned much admiration when we shared his story last year (Jumper Gone Rogue: A Jumper Rider & a Horse With No Tail Walk Into May Daze…), and he’s still enjoying life as an eventer! Meagan, recently healed from an ankle injury, navigated him around the picturesque Kentucky bluegrass with such love and enthusiasm — it’s contagious. Take a ride with Meagan and Bear.

Who Jumped It Best? Big Cheese Schooling H.T. at Ashland Farm

This Who Jumped It Best? takes us to a place that I hold very near and dear to my heart, Ashland Farm in Walnut Grove, Ga. Ashland is where I grew up riding with longtime coach, mentor and friend Ann Haller. Ann spent many years as the resident trainer on this special property, owned by Lucy and Clay Calhoun. Together, they hosted many schooling shows here, all which formed the foundation of my competition experience. Ann’s husband Roger Haller, famously known for designing the cross country course for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, only 20 minutes away, laid out what we called the North Gate Pasture to offer cross country schooling and courses for grasshoppers through preliminary riders.

The place was and is still an oasis for local riders. In addition to the cross country field, Ashland boasts two dressage arenas, a full size show jumping ring and 400 acres of sprawling trails. While the local pony club has hosted combined tests, it’s been ten years since the Calhoun’s property had seen three-phase competition, until this weekend.

This weekend Ashland Farm hosted the first Big Cheese Horse Trial, CT & Dressage Show. Organized by Caroline Templeton, 72 local riders of all ages and levels took part in the event, and it was an astounding success. As Lucy Calhoun said, I think Ann would’ve been proud.

To celebrate this homecoming of sorts, y’all help us pick which Beginner Novice horse and rider combination you think presents the best overall picture. Scroll through, and vote in the poll at the bottom of this post.

Thank you to Rebecca Lever of Rebecca Abney Photography who provided these lovely photos. For more from the show, you can check out her Facebook Page. Big Cheese Eventing has a full calendar through the end of the year with three more horse trials. For more information, click here.
