#EventerProblems Vol. 234, Presented by Haygain: Horses, the Most Honest Teachers

Horses just love to call us on our bull crap. Just yesterday, while riding with a friend, I said, “I’m going to pop over a few fences without stirrups for practice.” She warned me against it, reminding me that my horse loves to buck. It was noon, and in the high 80s in Georgia, so I said “He’s way too hot and lazy to buck!!”

I’m sure you can guess how this played out. Cross rail … then BUCK! My horse was just really trying to make sure I took full advantage of my no stirrup work. Horses really are the best teachers.

New jumps coming to The Carolina Horse Park!

Some newĀ fences are slated to make their debut at The Carolina Horse Park in Raeford, N.C. Think this looks a little familiar? That’s because they have been generously given from Brad Turley at Southern 8th’s Farm, which hosted the Heart of the Carolinas Three-Day Event. Though the much loved HOTC event is no longer held, theĀ fences can continue to be a part of eventing. Thank you Brad for all you have done for our sport.

We have waited ever so patiently, and today offers a littleĀ something to feed our hunger for equestrian sports — we have a honest-to-God cross country live stream for you to watch! Grab a cup of coffee and settle in to watch the first leg of the Strzegom Summer Tour in Poland.

The CCI3*-S and CCI4*-S cross country divisions begin at 12:50 p.m. local/6:50 a.m eastern.Ā The CCI*-S and CCI2*-SĀ classes kicked off at 9 a.m. local/3 a.m. eastern, and you can rewatch their efforts at this link.

Due to sanitary restrictions, the eventĀ is takingĀ place without audiences and media.

Georgie Spence has retired her five-star horse Wii Limbo from competition. Owned byĀ Suzanne Doggett, Lucy Fleming, Sam Wilson and Georgieā€™s father Russell, the the 17-year-old Dutch Warmblood boastsĀ six finishes at the toughest level of our sport including 12th at Burghley in 2015. Georgie bought “Woody” as a 3-year-old and produced him all the way.

She said, ā€œHe is 17 and owes me nothing, itā€™s just the right time. I will keep him and jump him, do some indoor cross-country events, and just let him be a horse. Heā€™ll stay with me until the day he dies.ā€

Happy retirement Woody!

I'm sorry for the poor video quality. I forgot my tripod, so my oldest was videoing. She's very supportive though. šŸ˜Š . Yesterday's ride wasn't our best. We both felt a bit off. I felt like my shoulders kept coming forward, and I just wasn't riding my best. Lexi was relaxed, but just wasn't quite herself. Maybe a little stiff, maybe just and off day for us both. . This exercise was incredibly difficult for Lexi, but needed. Going through the one stride and to the bending line rode well, but coming back into it, Lexi kept getting strung out and I struggled to get her to compress her stride. If you caught my stories you'd see at one point out miscommunication landed with us hitting a jump standard. My knee currently has an indent on it. šŸ˜£ . After releasing my child from video duties we went through one last time. During the 2nd bending line I half halted so strong we almost halted, but it was enough to get her balanced and end on a good note. We will be returning to more exercises like this. šŸ’Ŗ

We are sad to share the news that Jonathan Elliot and Suzy Pettman Elliott’sĀ Aspen has been laid to rest at age 34.

Aspen was a roan Swedish Warmblood (Callaghan xĀ Annika) owned by Gail Elliott. His spirit was the inspiration for the Elliott’sĀ idyllic property, Aspen Farms,Ā in Yelm, Washington, which hosts US Eventing horse trials through the Advanced level.

Aspen was Jonathan’s first Advanced horse, and together they attained many career accolades including 4th at the 1998 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event at the now four-star level, a silver medal at Young Riders and Advanced wins from coast to coast.

The pair spent five years at the Advanced level before Jonathan’s wife, Suzy took over the ride. Suzy and Aspen galloped around Advanced horse trials across the country and culminated their partnership with the Foxhall CCI3* (Now CCI4*-L) in 2001.

“Yesterday we laid to rest our beloved Aspen at 34 years young. He gave me numerous experiences and taught me so much.Ā He was my first Advanced horse, we got to leave the box 17 times over those magical blue numbers.

“Our 3 kids got to play with and get to know this amazing little Monkey. He taught us all so much, Aspen Farms will not be the same without him but he will always be fondly remembered.”

Something special is on the horizon forĀ European eventers this winter. The Portuguese Eventing Association (ACCE) and the Portuguese Equestrian Federation (FEP) have just announced theĀ launch of the 2020 Portuguese Eventing Tour with the goal of beefing up what’s left of the 2020 International calendar. The competitions will take place the last two weeks of November and the first week of December, pending FEI approval.

Key Dates:

Week 1Ā 19-21st November at Ota (CCI1*-S, CCI2*-S, CCI3*-S, CCI4*-S plus a national programme)

Week 2Ā 26-28th November at Barroca dā€™AlvaĀ (CCI1*-S, CCI2*-S, CCI3*-S plus the National Championships)

Week 3Ā 2nd-6th December at Barroca dā€™Alva (CCI1*-S, CCI2*-S, CCI3*-S, CCI4*-S, CCI2*-L, CCI3*-L, CCI4*-L (Olympic qualifier)

Much is still up in the air as they wait for a green light from the FEI, but the organization has pledged to strictly adhere to any appropriate COVID-19 restrictions at the time of competition. You can read more about it here.

If you would have been out in my jump ring yesterday you probably would have counted over 500 jumps I took (cumulatively) on all the horses I rode and I didnā€™t stop until I felt each horse had accomplished what I felt he or she needed to. I post this ā€œfailā€ to show you that I make mistakes and this was NO FAULT OF TOROā€™S in fact he was a blessed Saint sent from the stars above to be honest and continue down the line for me like he did. Truth is I COMPLETELY missed my striding into the line and it sucked but we were no worse the wear and came back and corrected the mistake I made. How To Train Your Dragon With Samantha Bogan šŸ‰ On days youā€™d like to school your baby dragon through some water, be prepared for anything. I literally mean anything. Nothing is too extreme when it comes to imagining what you should be prepared for. Once youā€™ve got your baby dragon by your water source, mine was a giant lake, proceed to spend an hour convincing your dragon to just put one foot in. After that hour, your dragon will walk through a bit of water, once in the water, they may panic a bit like mine did. After youā€™re back on dry land with your dragon, spend another 30 mins convincing the dragon to do the exact same thing he had just done. They will be using a different side of their brain, so donā€™t expect them to retain much & just hop on in. Suddenly they will put a foot in the water, at this point they realize theyā€™re invincible and will take off straight into the lake with no thought of you on their back. Once they have reach the halfway point of your 15 acre lake they will look you straight in the eye and realize that they had truly fucked up. Now itā€™s your job to guide your 1,300lb dragon back to shore. It may be challenging as your dragon still has the aftershocks of being invincible and can go anywhere. It will take you about 10 mins of swimming about the lake next to your dragon in boots that are too big, so theyā€™re dragging you down, to get back to shore. Once you have reached the shore proceed to vomit repeatedly because youā€™re exhausted. Then, walk your exhausted water logged ass over 50 acres to bring your dragon back to the barn. Hand your dragon off to you amazing interns and lay on the ground. Congratulations, you have now trained your dragon to get through water! Found a few goblins and ghouls in the ditches but they couldnā€™t reach him šŸ˜‚. What a good man! Finn went cross country schooling yesterday and was a šŸŒŸ! I also may or may not have mis-judged the height on one of the jumps and sent him over a training level one šŸ˜…šŸ™ˆ. Steamed Hay Stars in USEF Learning Center Video on Respiratory Health

The latest addition to the United States Equestrian Federation’s Learning Center video library covers a topic close to Haygain’s heart: respiratory health in competition horses.

In the video, veterinarian, dressage rider and USEF member Wren Burnley, DVM, shares actionable information about the importance of respiratory health, the prevalence of respiratory challenges and the small changes in barn management that can make big changes in a horse’s health.

As an athlete with asthma herself, Dr. Burnley is keenly aware the uncomfortable and performance limiting effects of a compromised respiratory system. In horses, the most common of these is Inflammatory Airway Disease. IAD affects over 80% of active sport horses, even though it is “amazingly asymptomatic,” Dr. Burnley explains.

“Whenever we scope a horse, we often have owners think their horse doesn’t have IAD at all,” she shares in the 14-minute video. “Yet, we often find signs of it.”

Additional Key Points

  • Horses have a 1-1 ratio of stride to breath at the canter or gallop. “Whenever we affect their breathing, we affect their stride.”
  • Subtle signs of IAD include:
    • Cough — especially when warming up. “It’s often thought the horse is coughing to clear its airway, but that’s not normal for a horse.”
    • Slower respiratory recovery rate after exertion.
    • Clear or colored nasal discharge
    • “Your horse is not exactly right, and you just can’t pinpoint why.”
  • “Simple changes in how we keep our barn can make a big effect on our horses and can prevent many cases of IAD.”

How Steamed Hay Helps

Boing āž”ļøāž”ļø oops! . So, FYI I fell this weekend. I didnā€™t hit my head or anything I just kind of fell after this jump and knocked my front teeth out from clenching my jaw. The next time through we fared a little better (last slide), but I definitely still have to figure out my position for this kind of leaping situation? . I felt stupid at first but then I thought more about it. Iā€™m not that experienced at this sport yet, and if my horse didnā€™t even get a scratch and my body feels fine, Iā€™ll take a couple broken teeth… Courtenay of 10 years ago would be freaking the hell out right now, funny how age (and a healthy horse) changes your perspective on your appearance! . Day 2 of our eventing clinic Phrases that came out of my trainer's mouth today: "She needs to listen!" "She's a head case." "She's stupid bold." (Not a compliment šŸ˜‚) . Positives: It was still a much improved cross country school from previous, and wasn't our worst ride. Lexi doesn't look at a thing, she jumped anything I pointed her at. Negatives: She doesn't LOOK at a thing, and steering/breaks are no longer necessary. Lexi somehow became a bonded pair with the mare next to her overnight. She was anxious, excited, and just uninterested in my opinion of how things should go. . . I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a tad disappointed in today's ride. I was hoping to have a relaxed mare so I could really jump some things and see what we could do, instead we had to go back to basics and walk up to jumps so she'd stop taking off with me. I got blisters on my fingers through my roeckl gloves. She was a tad strong. šŸ˜’ . . All that being said, I'm still pleased with her bravery, and my own courage. She is stupid brave. Stupid in the fact that she doesn't take into account her own self preservation while freight training around. šŸ¤¦ However, even with her wildness, I wasn't really nervous. Normally I get nervous jumping even small cross country fences, but today I trusted her to get us over. I only got nervous over a cabin jump, mainly because I was concerned I wouldn't have any control before/after it; but she was fine, and eventually I got her stopped. šŸ˜… Oh, and we got one pretty picture out of it. We had a play down a fab grid (pinched from Laura Collett Eventing) with some of the horses last week – this exercise is great for improving their athleticism & technique as well as sharpening up their reactions…(The raised poles are 2.5 – 2.75 yards from each jump. There is approx 11 yards distance from jump to jump so a good yard short of what it would be for a comp)

Saturday was gymnastics day for the horses at Gemma Tattersall’s yard. She worked through one of Laura Collett’s grids with the goal of “improving their athleticism & technique as well as sharpening up their reactions.”

There are three fences that are each 11 yards apart to give you a short two stride. She’s then set raised poles 2.5-2.75 yards ahead of each fence. Those ascending vees will give you a little extra pop, as well.

Hunt Club Farms Growing Bigger & Better in 2020

Hunt Club Farms (HCF) has proudly announced they have added a PreliminaryĀ course that will debut atĀ their July 25th one-day event in Berryville, Va.

ā€œWe decided to make the most of our downtimeā€, said HCF ownerĀ TracyĀ Zack, ā€œWith our spring shows cancelled, we really threw ourselves into making the summer recognized event the best it can be. Weā€™ve moved fence lines and paddocks, created a new dressage ring, improved the parking area, improved the footing and completely moved the cross country course around.ā€

Thanks to course designer, Morgan Roswell and course builder Craig Haynes, competitors can look forward to new courses and new jumps across all levels, including the brand new Preliminary course which features frangible pin technology. The courses feature a Viking theme — a nod toĀ Tracyā€™s Norwegian heritage — with shields, helmets and hammers and of course the Viking Ship jump, placed throughout the grounds.

ā€œIā€™m really excited to welcome our community back and have them out to compete,ā€ saidĀ Tracy, ā€œI love being able to support this sport and offer a friendly, fun and safe venue for competitors.”

HCF is offering prizes for all divisions and a cash prize for the lowest score of the day. HCF is working closely with local, state and federal officials to ensure the safety and well-being of all who attend and to adhere to all COVID restrictions. Entries are open! Lesson number 2 for hubby and this time he took Harley our. I went to get Joey and noticed a bit of swelling in his fetlock. It was nothing major but enough to keep him home. ā£ ā£ So, Harley. Our favourite hot mess at the moment. My husband hasnā€™t jumped him properly in over a year except for small things at home. He took him out expecting some ordinary behaviour. But he was exceptional.
