Tuesday News:

As of now, the USEA American Eventing Championships are still scheduled for August 25-30. The USEA Board will meet soon to make a decision regarding whether qualifications need to be updated. [Update on the 2020 USEA American Eventing Championships Presented by Nutrena Feeds]

We were sad to hear of the passing of Kings Temptress over the weekend. The five-star winner died following complications involving her foal’s delivery. [Devastation as home-bred five-star winner dies; foal adopted by foster mare]

Shoulder-in? Pfft, amateur stuff. Swedish Olympian Ludwig Svennerstål likes to jazz things up a bit by putting this lateral movement on a circle. As someone who absolutely cannot nail a shoulder-in on a straight line, the very thought of it makes me feel a bit queasy, but with his handy explanation of the benefits, and a walk-through of how to ride it, it’s top of my list for the next time I’m able to ride. [#SundaySchool: Ludwig Svennerstål — the benefits of practising shoulder-in on a circle (after lockdown lifts)]

To ride or not to ride? That is the question. While many are turned away from the barn, others, with limited options are still out at the barn managing their horse’s exercise and wellbeing. [In Defense Of Going To The Barn]

One of the few positives coming out of this downtime in our season is that horse show photographers have a lot of extra time on their hands. I’ve seen the most fun throwback photos on social media in the last few weeks, like Amy Dragoo’s photo above. While we’re appreciating the efforts of horse show photographers, go buy some photos from them! Remember, without horse shows they are without an income, too. Let’s show our support for their beautiful images.

Okay, so I didn't wait a couple weeks. I just waited until the afternoon. 😆 the weather got sunny and warm. The wind died down and the horses were all relaxed. You'll be able to see some anxious moments while the other horses are by the fence. My goal is to just redirect her back to what I'm asking. Focus on me, not the distractions. . . The second video is taken just after Lexi had a meltdown. The horses came running up behind us and Lexi wanted to bolt. As a very well bred and track trained thoroughbred her first instinct is to run, and she doesn't want any horse passing and getting ahead. 😏 it was a positive experience, and I'm pleased with how it went. . . I'm off to my riding lesson today so I should have lots of video! 😁

#EventerProblems Vol. 221, Presented by Haygain: April Is the New Off Season

To those of you whose barns have closed our hearts go out to you. And to those of you who are still riding, we are living vicariously through you! Here’s your latest batch of #EventerProblems:

View this post on Instagram

This week’s #failfriday is from what was undoubtedly the worst stadium round I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. All my jumps were bad, I got horrible distances (sorry Leda) and knocked a few rails before getting to this particular jump, which I understand why she may have refused besides it being ~spooky,~ since literally every approach I gave her to the previous fences did not help her get over them at all. It was… mildly painful going back to find the video for this post, because I immediately remembered how incredibly upset and embarrassed I was afterwards (I basically had a lil nervous breakdown lol, as I am one to do). Now obviously bad rides happen and you should always try and see how you can turn a negative into a positive by learning from them, but man… I am and always will be an honest person, so I gotta tell ya that I still really do hate thinking about this particular experience 🙃 that’s life tho!! . . . . . . #eventing #eventinghorse #eventingpony #ridingfail #horsefails #horsefail #hunterjumper #stadiumjumping #eventhorse #jumpinghorse #eventerproblems #equestrian

Tuesday Video from Flexible Fit Equestrian USA: An Update on Madison Park

Posted by Kyle Carter on Thursday, March 26, 2020

Who what’s Madison Park been up to since his retirement three years ago? Having a crack at the lower levels, and obviously killing it, but now Kyle Carter is using this downtime to have some fun with his old friend.

Kyle said:

“Having a bit more time on my hands for obvious reasons I did a little school over fences on Mr Madison Park! My partner in crime for 11 years at the advanced level and 9, 5 star appearances 3 teams and 2 medals. My last jump on him was at his last advanced when he was 19. Now at 22 I just wanted to appreciate that I could still have a chance to do this. We both have less in front of us than behind but how lucky am I to still have this opportunity to spend time with him.”

At 22, Parker looks like he has many happy years ahead of him. Thanks, Kyle, for sharing this update with all of his fans.

Go eventing.

Who needs a bridle? Photo by Jane Allen.

Quarantine seemed like the perfect opportunity to try something new, so I’ve ditched my bridle. At first, I did it like a fun party trick, but now I’m really exciting about using this to help strengthen my other aids and my relationship with my horse. All was well when I first started in the area. I (mostly) had breaks and could turn. Next, I introduced hacking around the farm, and he was cool with that too. When I threw some cross rails into the mix, I wasn’t sure what Justin would think. Would I get bucked off? Thankfully not the case yesterday. What new things are you guys trying this spring? Let us know.

Summer Dates in 2021 Under Consideration for Tokyo Olympics

Photo via Wikimedia Commons.

Officials are considering a summer start date for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The New York Times reported that the opening ceremony will likely be held July 23 of next year.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Tuesday their decision to officially postpone the Games due to the coronavirus pandemic, but didn’t nail down rescheduling options.

The proposed start would put the Olympics almost exactly one year after their original dates, as the opening ceremony was scheduled for July 24 of this year. The IOC executive board planned to meet Sunday to discuss this possibility.

Spring was originally floated as a possibility, but that has reach opposition from many major sports as well as NBC Universal, which owns broadcast rights to the Olympic Games.

“On a call within the past week with Thomas Bach, the IOC president, some federations, including those representing swimming, table tennis, triathlon and equestrian, had voiced a preference to hold the Olympics in the spring,” the New York Times reported. “That, though, would have led to a clash with the seasons for major soccer leagues and many of the richest U.S. sports leagues.”

While a July start date fits into the calendars of the 30-odd sports participating, it still leaves athletes facing Tokyo’s hottest season. The FEI conducted a research study at the Ready, Steady Tokyo Test event last year that found despite the heat, horses handled conditions well and remained in good health, thanks to implementations made by the host site. You can read more about that study here.

What’s In Your Arena? 5 More Exercises to Keep You Motivated This Quarantine Season

Between practicing social distancing and hearing of what feels like endless event cancellations, it would be easy to feel a little blue right about now. But eventers are made of tougher stuff, and we’ll come out stronger on the other side. To keep the momentum going, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite exercises that we’ve shared on EN. Set these up in your arena and enjoy!

Triple of Barrels

As you know from previous editions of “What’s in Your Arena?” that I have authored because I didn’t get it together in time to enlist someone more qualified, I am the world’s laziest course builder. (See also “Wylie’s Short-on-Time Shamrock” and “Another Great Exercise for Eventers Who Have Nothing Left to Give.”)

Did I mention that barrels are cheap AND easy? Go splurge on a few via Craigslist. The hard part, of course, is actually jumping them — but you won’t find a better test of accuracy, straightness and honesty. Click here to read more.

Ride The Rhythm

This week’s What’s In Your Arena is brought to you by Lainey Ashker’s popular #GOTD series. This collection of gymnastics in a course-like setting utilizes the whole arena and is an effective training tool for horses and riders at every level.

Lainey’s exercise has everything: canter poles, cavaletti, related distances, cross rails, square oxers, turns and changes of direction. Plus it looks like a ton of fun and a real thinker! Click here to read more.

Posted by Lainey Ashker on Wednesday, July 19, 2017

Up Your Circle Game

Have you gotten dizzy practicing Werner Geven’s Circle of Hell that we shared a few weeks ago? You’re in luck because we’ve got an even bigger challenge for you today: Meet the Circle of Hell’s big, bad brother.

Lainey Ashker shared this gem as part of her #GOTD series. Like Werner, she describes the task as “deceptively simple,” but if you tried the Circle of Hell in your arena, then you know that it’s anything but!

Essentially, you start on the circle with four rhythmical strides in each of the ‘slices,’ then you take it out to surrounding oxers, which are set on an outside line with two of the verticals set on the circle. Click here to read more.

Simple Gymnastics to Start the Season

A deep dive in the Evention TV archives unearthed this simple, three-part gymnastics exercise that incorporates trot poles, a low, easy bounce and a one-stride to a vertical. This is a great grid to get the jumping muscles working, get your horse thinking about where he’s putting his feet and allow you to practice your position. It can be built up or down for any level and jumps added to it as time goes on. Click here to read more.

Lainey Ashker’s Latest #GOTD

Lainey’s latest #GOTD has everything: bounces, combinations, bending lines and one of those super fun but slightly intimidating wide oxers.

“So the main focus here is the grid in the center with the X-vertical bounces but figured I would lay out the whole course for your added viewing/riding/entertainment pleasure,” Lainey said. “This grid focuses on straightness, teaching the horse to slowdown and to react off the rider’s leg to make the distance to the oxer all the while engaging the hind legs.

“The ride each direction over the grid gives a different feeling which makes it really fun and informative for both horse and rider. Remember the primary focus in influencing a horse’s speed/balance over jumps is not use of a hand, stronger bit or magic but correct rider position. The use of the wide oxer in the latter part of the course is to teach the horses to push from behind.” Click here to read more.

Like anyone, Boyd Martin is disappointed to not take his shot at the Olympic Games this year, but in a blog post, he shared that he’s looking on the positive side. Here’s what he had to say:

“We were half expecting this news as the terrible Covid-19 virus continues to spread around the world. This pandemic is bigger than the Olympics, and it didn’t make sense to push through with much of the world fighting for survival.

“On a personal level, I have a horse in top form that could have really given the Olympic Games a good crack this year. But later this year we will also have massive events like Burghley and Fair Hill, events I’ve always dreamed of winning – so personally I’m fired up and dialed in to get the horses going as best I can.

“Also on the positive side, the postponement will give some of  the younger horses coming up more time to develop and give them a chance of slipping in there and being competitive next year.

“The pandemic is out of our control, but the key for us as horsemen is to keep the horses and ourselves working and in good health. During this year I’ve lost a fair bit of weight and stayed healthy and kept up the physio after my last surgery; there’s no reason for me to fall back into the slump of being drunk and fat, because you never know what’s around the corner. I am enjoying waking up each day feeling fresh and fit. We have all the horses in top shape at the moment so it’s just a matter of maintaining all of our fitness to be ready when the competition season starts up again.”

Mia Farley Receives USET Foundation’s Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant

The USET Foundation has named Mia Farley as the recipient of the 2020 Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant.

Awarded annually, the grant is given in honor of Amanda to provide financial assistance to an up-and-coming rider who has the talent and determination to one day represent the United States in competition. Mia will receive $5,000 to go toward training expenses. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, funds will be available this year or next year.

Mia Farley popped up on EN’s radar back in 2014, and her performance has only improved since. She was named Emerging Athlete Eventing 18 Program in 2014 and is currently on the US Equestrian Emerging Athlete Eventing 25 Program. Originally from San Clemente, California, Mia now trains on the East Coast with the O’Connor Event Team.

Her 2019 season secured her this distinction. She had eight top-15 finishes at International events, culminating with a second place result — on her dressage score — at The Dutta Corp. Fair Hill International Three-Day Event CCI4*-L with BGS Firecracker, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse owned by Mia and Paddy Byrne.

“It is an honor [to receive this grant],” said Farley, of San Clemente, Calif. “The fact that they recognized me and what [I accomplished] last year is huge. This is a big deal for me and really special. I have talked to a couple people [about how to use it], and the most beneficial thing would be to possibly go overseas and get some experience and see how it all works.”

Congratulations, Mia!
