Ryan Keefe Receives USET Foundation’s Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant

Ryan Keefe and Flintstar. Photo by Shelby Allen.

This week the USET Foundation named 18-year-old Ryan Keefe as the recipient of the 2019 Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant.

Awarded annually, the grant is given in honor of Amanda to provide financial assistance to an up-and-coming rider who has the talent and determination to one day represent the United States in competition. Ryan will receive $5,000 to go toward training expenses.

“It’s a really big honor to be chosen for because I know that a lot of other great riders before me have received it,” Ryan said. “It definitely feels good to have the support of the USET Foundation and other people behind the grant who believe in me.”

Aboard the Olympic veteran Flintstar, Ryan has made a name for herself in the eventing world. The pair won the Virginia CCI2*-L (formerly CCI*) in 2017 before tackling the move up to the two-star level last year. The pair finished second in the the CCI3*-S (formerly CIC2*) at Fair Hill in April and won team gold at the Adequan/FEI North American Youth Championships before their season culminated with an 11th place finish in the CCI3*-L (CCI2*) at the Dutta Corp. Fair Hill International.

“The grant will help me a lot with our winter training in Ocala,” she said. “Since [Flintstar] is getting older, I would like to get some Advanced Level experience out of him this year. He has been such a good teacher so far for me. A big thanks again to the people behind the grant for all of their support!”

Congratulations, Ryan!

Lunging kids at Andrew Hoy Eventing

#EquestrianLifestyle | PegaseBuzzEvery parents should lunge their kids.Video: Andrew Hoy Eventing.

Raising children is no easy task. Much like the horses in your barn, you’ve got to make sure to get them fed, watered and exercised. If you’re short on time, lunging your kids is a viable option. Great for parents on the go, or for the toddler that needs a pre-ride before day care, lunging is the preferred exercise method for parents, just ask Andrew Hoy!

Only kidding, but it looks plenty fun for Andrew and his daughter Philippa!

Fight back against colic and digestive upset.

Neigh-Lox® Advanced provides a scientifically advanced blend of ingredients that work synergistically to maintain your horse’s digestive tract in peak condition by supporting both the gastrointestinal tissues and the beneficial bacteria that populate the gut. Maintaining a healthy digestive tract reduces the risk of colonic and gastric ulcers, colic, laminitis related to hindgut acidosis, and oxidative stress that damages digestive tract tissues themselves. Horses with a well-balanced GI tract have good appetites, absorb more nutrients from their diets, maintain a strong immune system, and stay healthier.

USEF Annual Meeting Highlights: Verdades Named 2018 International Horse of the Year

Dressage superstar Verdades was named the 2018 International Horse of the Year at the 2019 USEF Annual Meeting. “Diddy,” the 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Florett AS x Liwilarda, by Goya) joins his rider, Laura Graves, on this special podium as she was named 2018 Equestrian of the Year earlier this week.

Lauren and Diddy, who is owned by the rider and Curt Maes, shared many accomplishments in 2018 including winning the Grand Prix at the FEI World Cup™ Dressage Finals in Paris, earning team silver at the FEI Equestrian Games™ in Tryon, and becoming the first U.S. pair to earn an individual silver medal at a global championship. In recognition of this, they also became the first American combinations to sit #1 on the FEI Dressage World Rankings. You can read even more about Diddy at this link.

There has been much celebration and discussion at the US Equestrian Annual Meeting this week in West Palm Beach, Florida. EN wasn’t in attendance this year, but we’ve been following along to make sure you don’t miss any of it. Read on for highlights from Friday and Saturday, and click here for our other recaps.

Mayzie: One of The 52 Thoroughbreds

Mayzie and Madalyn Rusinoff. Photo courtesy of Trinity Farm.

It all started with a Facebook post: 52 Thoroughbreds who needed immediate relocation. The story was spread far and wide and concluded with a happy ending as all horses were homed. But that success doesn’t stop the annual resurgence of the post across social media, much to the chagrin of the horse world.

Every year we pick back up where we left off, kindly explaining to the well-meaning pubic that these horses found homes, including one pregnant gray mare. Jockey Club registered as Gray Hot Momma (Magnificent One x Hot Plate), “Mayzie” found a soft landing with Joanne May. Joanne took the mare in and helped her deliver a healthy colt.

Once the colt was weaned, Joanne also helped Mayzie find a new career with Katherine Trimble at Trinity Farm, a non-profit therapeutic equestrian facility. Katherine visited Joanne’s barn in search of new horses for her program, but she couldn’t ignore the gray mare.

“We were going to see a couple horses at that barn that had potential and it just so happened that we fell in love with Mayzie,” she said. “She was very friendly and had great ground manners and was very inquisitive. We were drawn to her personality right away.”

Mayzie. Photo courtesy of Trinity Farm.

Mayzie settled into home at the Streetsboro, Ohio farm where she was folded into therapeutic riding program and began her eventing education.

“We have an inclusion program where we teach riders with and without special needs. Some of our eventing students have special needs, some don’t, but the upper level riders all volunteer back in the therapeutic riding program. They either ride alongside riders with special needs in the special olympics or volunteer to help at horse show or as walkers or leaders, so the program is all intertwined,” Katherine explained.

Mayzie has taken to eventing like a fish to water, Katherine says. “Anything that we’ve ever shown her, she’s just taken in stride. It’s almost as if she’s made for it. The first time we introduced her to a water complex, she took to it naturally. She just wanted a little explanation, then she went right at it.”

While she mostly caters to the more advanced riders at Trinity Farm, including Madalyn Rusinoff, who currently leases her, Mayzie has a temperament that makes her a perfect candidate for many riders and handlers.

Mayzie. Photo courtesy of Trinity Farm.

“She loves working with all the different students. She has phenomenal ground manners and is very attentive to whoever is leading her,” Katherine said. “So if we have a brand new volunteer who hasn’t learned to lead yet, she’s very patient with them and she’ll take her time and she’ll stay right along side them. If she’s with a student that maybe has some physical disabilities with walking or having trouble holding the lead rope she’s very patient with all of that. She really meets every person where they are with their skills.”

Katherine admits they don’t typically go for green Thoroughbreds as new members of their program, but Mayzie has been an outstanding exception.

“She has been quite a unique horse to add to the program. Anybody who sees her immediately falls in love with her.”

Go Mayzie. Go eventing.

Out of The Mouths of Babes: ‘7 Reasons to Be A Horse’

7 Reasons to Be A Horse.

There’s something magical about the love a little girl has for horses. Often the catalyst for a lifelong passion, afternoons in the barn spent spent brushing and riding and squealing with glee are not easily forgotten by grown-up horsewomen. Those early days around horses are the foundation of your barn knowledge, where you learn the basics like ‘don’t stand right behind the horse.’ Some kids are much more intuitive than others, like this Area VII eventer.

Now grown, she shared some creative writing from her childhood that’s equal parts hilarious and relatable. Start your Saturday off right with this Kids Say The Darndest Things/EN mashup:

7 Reasons to Be A Horse

  1. No Matter what you look like, you’ll always be either beautiful or cute.
  2. You can be as loud as you want and no one will question you.
  3. People only ask you for about an hour of your day and spend the rest of it feeding and petting you.
  4. You can openly dislike one of your human’s friends and they will steer clear of you.
  5. You can freak out for no reason whatsoever.
  6. You have someone to give your heart to…
  7. … and that same someone to give you theirs right back.

EN’s Most Impressive Saves of 2018

In a sport full of thrills and spills, we know one thing for sure: you guys just don’t give up! Year after year, you guys show up, show out and hang on for dear life. We’ve rounded up some of the most impressive saves of the year. Check it out and let us know who you think did it best in the comments.

1. Presenter Hayley Moore saved the day at Chepstow Racecourse in a move that’s being called a ‘Save in a Sundress.’

2. Aaron Kuru and Des De Jeu nearly bit the dust racing at Awapuni in New Zealand, but they not only managed to save it, they won the race.

3. Red on the right, white on the left and insanity in the middle rang true for Sam Griffiths and Paulank Kings River at Millstreet. That’s a horse who knows his job!

What a Save! I think Sam Griffiths gets save of the year so far! PAULANK KINGS RIVER is such an honest horse, and how they actually made the angled brush after the bank together I have no idea, great riding Sam! #millstreet #cci3*

4. Nicola Wilson and One Two Many had a very dramatic moment at Bramham that nearly had them both swimming.

5. Switzerland’s Robin Godel and Grandeur de Lully CH made their save on the world stage when a dodgy fence nearly squashed their WEG dreams. EN’s Leslie Threlkeld then captured the most epic sequence of photos.

She’s remained determined and motivated in true eventer style. A staple of the Massachusetts and Aiken eventing communities, she’s known for her generous attitude and upbeat spirit. Local riders and friends have rallied to support her and she continues to run her business through her treatment.

To lend a hand, Helen Laffitte of Green Hill Sporthorses decided to turn to her own business of selling horses. “In typical Jess fashion, she wouldn’t let us just buy a horse and sell it and give her the money,” Helen explained, so she had to get creative. She decided to raffle off a young Thoroughbred to raise funds for Jessica’s expenses.

Meet Blue. After racing under the Jockey Club name Blue Moon Diamond, the 16-hand, coming 5-year-old found Helen through the organization Second Stride in Kentucky. Aiken Equine kindly donated a vetting and x-rays, and Equi-motion Farrier Service stepped up to sponsor his shoes while he’s being sold. Helen reports that he’s been nothing but dreamy in her barn. He’s been ridden by amateurs and professionals, and begun schooling over fences in the arena and in the cross country field.

The Final Vote: Allstar B and Classic Moet Up for EquiRatings Horse of the Year Title

While we at EN are a bit disappointed not to see a North American horse in the running for EquiRatings Horse of the Year, we are truly thrilled to see two powerhouses in the final: Classic Moet and Allstar B.

Feeling a bit lost on who you should vote for? You’re not alone. These two are true competitors who have more than earned their spot in the running, but that doesn’t make choosing between them any easier. Here’s the rundown:

Allstar B: The 13-year-old KWPN (Ephebe For Ever x  Narenca B, by Ekstein), who is owned by Caroline Moore and Ros Canter, is the current World Champion, achieving the title in Tryon this fall on his dressage score (24.6) which is the second lowest winning score in WEG history. Of course, “Alby” picked up even more jewelry that weekend — leading the Brits to team gold. If that’s not enough, you might remember he also had a 3rd place finish at Badminton CC4*. Tall, dark, handsome and talented — Alby has it all.

Classic Moet: While Alby claims a major championship title, “Molly” on the other hand cemented herself a CCI4* winner this year at Badminton. A speed queen, the 15-year-old (Classic x Gamston Bubbles, by Bohemond) owned by Trisha Rickards & Jonelle Price, picked up one sole time penalty on cross country day against a field that averaged a whopping 25.3. She then went against all odds to jump clear on the final day with Jonelle. Basically, Molly is the horse representation of girl power.

Consult your horoscope, work out a pros and cons table or go with your gut. Whichever way you choose, it’s time to vote for the 2018 winner! To vote, simply click on the photo of your chosen horse on the poll below. Voting ends tomorrow, Dec. 30 at 8 p.m. BST/3 p.m. EST.

**THE #ERHOTY18 FINAL** Over 30,000 votes and we are left with the big two from 2018. The Badminton Horse Trials…
