‘Round’ Table Discussion: Riders Talk Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field

Learn all about the $50,000 Liftmaster Grand Prix Eventing Showcase at Bruce's Field in this live press conference. Aiken Horse Park Foundation

Posted by EQTV Network on Friday, February 8, 2019

The inaugural $50,000 LiftMaster Grand-Prix Eventing is taking shape in the heart of Aiken, S.C. at Bruce’s Field. EN shared the tentative entry list earlier this week, and we’re excited to see many of our country’s best riders joined by the likes of William Fox-Pitt and Andrew Hoy.

The Aiken Horse Park Foundation rounded up a few of the competitors you can expect to see for an evening Q&A earlier this weekend. Phillip Dutton, Boyd Martin, Doug Payne, Ryan Wood, Waylon Roberts and Colleen Loach talk about their horses, the showcase’s place in their training schedule and why they are #TeamAiken. Take a listen!

Grand Prix Eventing is a USEF Advanced level recognized competition held March 1-2 at Bruce’s Field in Aiken, S.C. Dressage and show jumping will take place on Friday, March 1, and cross country will be held in the afternoon on Sunday, March 2. If you missed our sneak peak of the jumps — which will all have an Aiken theme — don’t miss it here.

This will be a fun outing to enjoy a bite-sized version of eventing, so grab your friends, bring and picnic and come see us at Bruce’s Field. General admission tickets cost $12 per day, or you can purchase a weekend pass for $20. Click here to purchase general admission tickets. You can also find information on VIP tickets at this link.

The entire competition will be live streamed both here on EN and on EQTV Network, hosted by EN’s own Jenni Autry alongside the dynamic John Kyle. You won’t want to miss a second of it. Keep it locked on EN for all the latest.

The Peacemaker~BN/Novice Packer

The Peacemaker
2011 16.2h Liver Chestnut TBX Gelding

Nelson has miles thru Training Level eventing and would make a great BN/N packer for a Jr or AA. He is simple to jump, a ton of fun xc, and uncomplicated to flat. He’s a good mover, has a lead change and is a very solid citizen in every respect! Super option for Jr/AA to event or for the Equitation. Located in South Carolina.

Tonka. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

2012 16.2h Trakehner/Thoroughbred Gelding

Tonka is currently showing with a young rider at Training level in Ocala, FL with scope for more and good dressage scores. He has a very sweet personality and is eager to please. Easy keeper.

Junior, young rider or adult amateur friendly.

Tre’ Jolie. Photo by Sport Horse Nation.

Tre’ Jolie Preliminary Training Packer

For Sale: Training and Preliminary Packer. 16.1h, April 2004 Irish Draft Sport Horse Mare. Tre’ Jolie AKA Jojo, is every amateurs dream. Having competed up through the preliminary level, Jojo is the ideal horse for an adult amateur or junior looking to learn while being competitive. Very rideable on the flat and a clean, careful jumper. Would make a fantastic straight show jumper. Always in the ribbons and very competitive in all three phases. Low key, fantastic ground manners, and always a barn favorite. Not available for lease. Priced at 45k. More video or photos upon request. Located in Florence, SC, but consistently in the Aiken, Southern Pines, and Charlotte area.

Waterboy. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Amateur Friendly Gelding

Dewey (USEA name Waterboy) is a 10yo, 16.1h Thoroughbred gelding located near Lexington KY. He was restarted off the track in 2017 and since has completed two BN events with an adult amateur rider in 2018, has spent the winter working on the basics and is ready to get back in the show ring in 2019. He has three lovely uphill gaits, a careful scopey jump and is brave across the country. Runs all three phases in a rubber snaffle. He clips, bathes, cross ties, loads, trailers, stands tied at the trailer and for the vet and farrier like a dream. He hacks out alone and in company and comes back after time off quietly. He has a very goofy personality, and is very in your pocket and social. Financial and time constraints force sale as I would love to keep him but cannot campaign him to the best of his ability. Price is negotiable to a great home, and he would be well suited for a confident AA, YR or JR who wants a fun horse to finish their way. Located in Kentucky.

Always A Thrill. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Michael Jung Wins All The Things at Bordeaux

Michael Jung and Corazon. Photo by Sportfot.

Winning at show jumping CSI5* and an indoor derby in one night? Just another day at the office for Michael Jung.

He kicked off a brilliant weekend in Bordeaux by sailing around a 1.40m course with fischerDaily Impressed to top the Congres et Expositions de Bordeaux CSI5*W. The 11-year-old KWPN posted a time of 61.93 seconds that remained untouched in the 39-horse division. You can find the scores for that class at this link.

He then cemented himself a back-to-back winner of the Devoucoux Indoor Derby aboard Maria Stein’s Corazon, a 9-year-old Hanoverian. The two finished with seven penalties in 123.86 seconds.

“I am very happy with the performance of my mare, Corazon. Thank you to my owner, Maria Stein, for her confidence, but also to this incredible public,” he said.

“It’s really fantastic to ride here. This year, the win was tighter and I had a little luck too, but it’s part of the game. If I finished second or third, I would have been just as happy because this course with my mare was a great moment of happiness.”

Aside from the German victor the remainder of the top ten sings with French pride. Karim Florent Laghouag gave Michael a run for his money, finishing second with Agnes Celerier’s Punch de l’Esques. This French duo clocked around in the fastest time of 117.79 seconds but also picked up 9 penalties. Maxime Livio and Boleybawn Prince were third with 14 penalties and 122.91 seconds. Also on 14 penalties was Rodolphe Scherer and Coeur de Crack, but just a hair slower on a time of 130.46.

Tonight all eyes will be on the Longines FEI World Cup™ qualifier. You can watch live on FEI TV beginning at 2:20 EST. The FEI World Cup™ Driving Final will follow at 5:10 EST.

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: An Eventer’s Prayer

We’ve all been there — that moment on cross country when you think that nothing short of a divine intervention will get you between the flags. Lucky for Shannon Baker and Honor Society, they had a Lord’s Prayer shoutout from the Horsepesterer himself last weekend at Three Lakes. That plus a whole lot of leg put them clean and easy over the ditch combination.

Make sure you’ve got the volume on to listen!

Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS), a new safety feature, is expected to significantly increase helmet safety measures. Sunday Video: Anna Pierce’s Rocking Horse Helmet Cam

Rocking Horse Winter I H.T. was the first outing of the year for many, including Anna Pierce and River King. The duo finished fifth in the Intermediate Rider division after a clear cross country with 3.2 time penalties for final score of 57.9.

This was an exciting finish for Anna and the 18-year-old Oldenburg, as now they can hunt down their final qualifying Intermediate run before they “chase the blue numbers” later this season.

Best of luck to them both!

Rocking Horse Roundup + Video Highlights

Emily Beshear and Silver Night Lady. Photo by Lisa Madren.

Rocking Horse was bustling this weekend in Altoona, FL. Their first winter horse trial is a sure sign that the season is in full swing. With 29 — yes, 29! — divisions there has been a lot of action, plus video highlights from David Frechette.

Both weekend Open Intermediate divisions went to Emily Beshear with the grey wonders Silver Night Lady and Olney Uncle Sam.

Deep Purple Eventing’s Silver Night Lady picked up 4.8 time penalties, but remained on top of the A division with their final score of 30 in the mare’s first competition of the year. Kylie Lyman and Xuanatu, an 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse owned by Joan Nichols, followed second with one rail down for a final score of 35.6.

Jennifer Ward’s 12-year-old Trakehner Olney Uncle Sam had a wire-to-wire win of the B division on his dressage score of 28.6. Again, Kylie was second, this time with Joan Nichol’s Da Vinci Code. The 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse finished on his dressage score of 29.30. Hallie Coon piloted Reginald McDougal, a 14-year-old Thoroughbred owned by Shanon Baker, to a solid third place in the division with 36.6 penalty points.

Nita Sanfilippo and Alarmabull. Photo by Lisa Madren.

Nita Sanfilippo piloted her own Alarmabull to win the Intermediate rider division. The 12-year-old Thoroughbred finished on his dressage score of 31.6. Emma Partridge and Max Attack, a 16-year-old Thoroughbred owned by Emma, Shelley and Mark Partridge, moved from fifth to land in second after adding 5.2 time penalties for a three-phase score of 47.3. Third place went to Gabrielle Ruane and her own Lismakeera Brewski, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse, who closed the weekend on a 49.

Anna Loschiavo went one-two in Friday’s Intermediate division, finishing first with Prince Renan and second with Spartacus Q.

Anna and Prince Renan, a 15-year-old Thoroughbred/Holsteiner owned by Gina and Rodney Oakes, made the climb from fifth to first through the three phases, adding nothing to their dressage score of 31.9.

Just one rail down put Spartacus Q, a 10-year-old Hanoverian owned by Melanie Loschiavo, behind his stablemate. He finished with a clear cross country run on a 33.8.

Buck Davidson and Copper Beach, who were tied with Anna and Spartacus Q for the lead after dressage, finished third in the division. Sherrie Martin and Carl Segal’s 13-year-old Irish Sport Horse picked up 4.8 time penalties on cross country for a final score of 34.6.

Friday saw three packed out Preliminary divisions. Lauren Kieffer won two of them with Jaqueline Mars’ Landmark’s Apollo and Landmark’s Monte Carlo, and Buck Davidson took the other aboard his own and Carl Segal’s Victor B Z, a 9-year-old Zangersheide.

Landmark’s Apollo lead the A division on 23.3 points with no jumping penalties, followed by Liz Halliday Sharp and Chailey Stud Equestrian’s Flash Cooley in second on 28.6, and Ashlyn Dorsey was third on 30.4 points aboard Marcel Dorsey’s Stakkato II.

A dressage score of 20.2 and fault free jumping performances gave Landmark’s Monte Carlo the win of division B. He was followed in second by Jessica Phoenix and Jane Stephenson’s Dr Sheldon Cooper with a score of 26.7 and in third by Liz on 29.6 with her ride, Duiske Abbey, who is owned by Pru Dawes.

Victor B Z had the best score of the three divisions. His dressage score of 18.9 carried him through all three phases. Cross country time split the tiebreak between Mia Farley with her own BGS Firecracker, who finished second, and Buck with Cassie Segal, Natalie Sandler and Lisa Darden’s Erroll Gobey. Both finished on 23.

The action continues today, so follow the live scores and watch even more videos from David’s YouTube channel.

The tack room is a perfect place for an afternoon nap.

Stephanie Rhodes Bosch Jenkins is expertly managing parenthood with her teaching and training business, and sometimes that means your kid has to take a nap in the tack room. I don’t have children, but I’d call this a parenting win. You know where they are, they have somewhere comfy to sleep and you can finish your barn chores.

Five Cross Country Rides To Inspire You This Season

Watch and learn — literally. Watching talented riders is an underrated tool for improving your own skills. As a visual learner myself, I take a lot away from videos at top events because it shows me just what to emulate. So if your winter season has a lot more snow than horse shows, grab a few take aways from these incredible riders:

An easy start is with the cross country queen herself, Jonelle Price. Here’s the cross country ride that won her Luhmühlen aboard Faerie Dianimo:

This post would not be complete without the inclusion of Michael Jung. Watch him go at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event with fischerRocana FST:

Team Great Britain roll deep with cross country prowess. Ros Canter picked up individual gold and lead the group to team gold as well, but even more impressive is that all team members went double clear across country.

Doug Payne is one rider who knows how to shave off seconds. He and Vandiver were the only pair to make the optimum time at the Cloud 11-Gavilan North Carolina International.

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: This Irish Jockey Is Stickability Goals

We have seen some seriously excellent saves here at EN, but every once in a while we see a rider who truly defies the laws of physics. The amateur Irish Jockey Michael Sweeney blew spectators away at the Killeagh point-to-point at Boulta Racecourse in County Cork when he miraculously didn’t fall from Ask Heather, a 7-year-old owned by Declan Queally, after the mare knocked a front leg on the final fence. After clinging from her neck for a few strides, Michael made his way back into the saddle. And what’s more, they went on the win the race.

Here’s another look:

It has to be seen to be believed! Here is the remarkable recovery made by Michael Sweeney aboard Ask Heather at the last from the Killeagh P2P at Boulta today. The pair somehow went on to win – take a bow Michael! 👏FULL STORY – http://m.p2p.ie/news.php?news_id=17794 🎥 Willie Murphy, Dunshaughlin

Your favorite grid queen is ready to jump into the new season with another Grid of the Day. Lainey Ashker has laid out another great exercise to fine tune your jumping skills.

“Today’s #GOTD is a great exercise to hone your horse’s straightness, tight knees, steady rhythm and focus on the rider’s quiet posture to facilitate all of these things,” she posted.

She’s laid out the distances in the diagram below. Don’t forget: this is a trotting exercise.

She even added a video on how you can adapt this grid for your greenies. She breaks it down into four helpful stages beginning with ground poles and leading up to cross rails.

Here’s a vocal explanation on how to start your greenies over yesterday’s #GOTD courtesy of Snitch!

Grand Oaks H.T. welcomed eventers to stretch their legs beneath the Spanish Moss and Florida sunshine this weekend at their Weirsdale, Florida venue. Now in its second year, the event is becoming a favorite of the winter season. David Frechette was on site to ring in the new season, and he’s shared videos of the weekend! You can see even more on his YouTube page, The Horsepesterer.

Lauren Kieffer and Landmark’s Mochachino won the Open Preliminary. Jaqueline Mars’ 8-year-old Thoroughbred cross added nothing to his dressage score of 29.4. Ellie O’Neal and Zick Zack, a 10-year-old Swedish Warmblood owned by Sally Cox, finished second on 30.2. Lauren also won the Open Training division with Jaqueline Mars’ Hindine.

David’s commentary is often the highlight of these videos — no offense to the riders! His insights made our top videos of 2018 (See: That’s Just a Well Trained Horse)

Maya Black and Miks Maseter C, a 7-year-old Swedish Warmblood owned by Laurie Cameron, won the Preliminary Horse on a score of 29.6. Kylie Lyman was second with Xuanatu, an 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse owned by Joan Nichols. on 30.4, and Clayton Fredericks came third aboard his own FE Coldplay on a final score of 31.4.

Take a look at the picturesque landscape and excellent riding with a few more from David:

I’d also like to give a shout out to EN’s Lead Writer and the wearer of many hats, Jenni Autry! She and her own Imperial Striker finished 6th in the Modified division.

Barn cats are a different breed. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Barn cats are NOT to be underestimated. These kitties have much more in common with their lion and tiger relatives than any ordinary house cat. Our barn cat rules the roost and has no issue with bossing the horses around. As a rule, I don’t wear shorts to feed because she has been known to scratch up a few ankles if you’re late giving her dinner — despite her hunting critters all day.

The Hylofit system tracks both horse and rider heart rates with real-time feedback, post-ride insights, overall well-being observations, zone training, sharing and video features, weather impact features and much more. Riders can access this all in real-time thanks to an app that is available for iOS (including iWatch) and Android devices.

“Eventers build a significant bond with their horses through hours spent together preparing for the rigors of competition, both in and out of the saddle. Hylofit, an innovative wireless heart rate tracking system, allows riders to delve a layer deeper into understanding their horse’s response to training and to quantify fitness level,” said Hylofit co-founder Kate McGuinn.

“It also provides insights into other indications of heart rate like stress and pain; sources that might not be apparent otherwise. Given the particular focus on conditioning and the time spent training in the saddle that the long format demands, we think Hylofit is a perfect fit for this partnership. We hope to provide classic series competitors and all eventers, beginner novice through advanced, the opportunity to “know your ride” like never before.”

USDA Temporarily Closes Miami Animal Import Center

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has closed the Miami Animal Import Center to new arrivals after quarantined horses became sick at the facility. The closure began Saturday Jan. 19, and will last until March 31, 2019.

So far six horses have fallen ill and three have died of what officials believe to be salmonella. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and lameness. APHIS is currently investigating to determine the cause, and the shutdown is an effort to stop any possible spread.

Salmonella is a bacteria that causes intestinal disease in many mammals. According to the AAEP Infectious Disease Guidelines, it is easily transmitted through both horse-to-horse contact as well as through other vehicles of transport such as pitchforks, water buckets, etc.

The facility currently is undergoing environmental testing, with the samples being sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories for evaluation. Officials have not yet released the status of the three horses with symptoms. Other horses still under quarantine are being closely monitored.

The APHIS and the import center have begun to increase biosecurity and disinfection efforts. In addition to a complete disinfection of the 95 quarantine stalls before reopening, the facility will also have its operating procedures reviewed. APHIS also confirmed that employees of the import center are exempted from the furlough due to the government shutdown.
