Turf Surfer- Training Level, Upper level Potential

Turf Surfer is a 2009 16.3 hand Thoroughbred gelding. Multiple top finishes at training level in Canada and the US. He is sound, no maintenance, goes in a rubber snaffle.

He has an amazing canter, very adjustable, and has a super hind end over the jumps. Usually scores low 30’s on the flat. Has top placings show jumping at the 1.10m level in Ontario. Finished 6th in a big Open Training Class at Ocala International 2018.

He has the scope to be a great upper level prospect for someone. You can count on him to leave the rails up. Located in Ocala, Florida.

Southern Belle. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Upper level event prospect

“Southern Belle” is an 8yo, 16.1h, tb, mare. Belle started her Eventing career this year, is confidently showing beginner novice and will move up to novice very soon. Extremely brave, correct gaits, and plenty of athleticism for the upper levels. A significant amount of talent for a professional, but also quiet enough for an amateur. Belle is a barn favorite, loads, ties, clips, ect. Not mareish at all. Located in Ocala, Florida. Price in the low 5 figures. 901-287-9633

Griffin. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Training Level Gelding, scope for much more!

Griffen is an 8 year old, thoroughbred gelding. He is 16’2, big bodied and big moving. He is a very laid back, smart guy who is well schooled on the flat and will jump whatever he’s pointed at. He has completed a couple training level events with the brain, scope and movement for much more.

Griff is schooling lateral movements at all gaits, lengthenings at all gaits, counter canter, simple changes, and some collection all in a happy mouth D bit with a link.

Over fences he is schooling prelim XC questions, including skinny combinations with ease. 3’3 sj courses and will easily finish out the winter season in Ocala with a prelim (unless I wimp out 🤦🏼‍♀️).

Easy to hack anywhere, very easy keeper (especially for a TB), prefers to live out- but please no group turnout situations (likes to play too much). Low maintenance. Super fun personality and an all around fun horse to be around. He will make you want to quit your job and travel the world with him doing fun things.

McDreamy. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

McDreamy- Lower Level Packer

McDreamy is a 2004 16.1 hand Thoroughbred gelding. Good mover, super sound with no maintenance, careful jumper, and a sweetheart in the barn. Goes in a rubber snaffle all three phases.

He has brought many young riders through the levels, with many wins at prelim, won his first intermediate, won Ontario Preliminary Championships and was 6th at Virginia CI2**-L (formerly CCI1*). He won Rocking Horse Preliminary in March 2018 on a 29.

He gives timid riders confidence and isn’t difficult to ride. He is best suited to someone who wants to gain experience at the lower levels while being competitive.

Deauville Beekhoeve. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Deauville Beekhoeve Gelding FEI Eventer

2008 Bay KWPN Gelding 17hh by Van Gogh. This well-schooled horse has great movement and a super jump. He has jumped 1.3 meter and won the One-Star at Strzegom in 2017. Already won 2 divisions in 2019 (modified at Grand Oakes and Open Prelim at Rocking Horse II). See more information on www.goldchipstables.com.

Will Coleman Wins $20,000 Ocala Horse Properties Eventing Prix Invitational

Will Coleman and TKS Cooley. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Speed demon Will Coleman is now a back-to-back winner of the $20,000 Ocala Horse Properties Eventing Prix Invitational, this year with TKS Cooley.

A careful clear secured Will and the 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Vivaldo Van Het Costersveld x  Badgerhill Cruise, by Cruising), owned by the TKS Cooley Syndicate, a spot in the jump-off. They followed that up with a dead accurate speed round that put them out front in 41.68 seconds.

“I just had a plan for what lines I wanted to ride and how I wanted to execute the course. Anytime you get in the ring with an atmosphere like this, it’s good for you. It’s good for your horse,” Will said. “When there’s money on the line, everyone wants to win. That’s the sort of competitive thing you can’t practice enough. Personally, I really enjoy it, and I had a blast today.”

Will also led his team, “Black List,” which included Buck Davidson, Lauren Kieffer and Matt Brown, to a win the team competition.

“Then I had all my teammates behind me giving me expert guidance — showing me the way,” Will smiled. “We were just having fun. It was just a good time.”

Jennie Brannigan and I Bella. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Jennie Brannigan set out in a blaze around the Chris Barnard’s 1.30m track with I Bella, a 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood/Holsteiner owned by Nina and Tim Gardner. Her time of 43.61 seconds gave her second place.

Leslie Law and Voltaire de Tre. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Finishing on an identical 46.58 seconds in the jump-off, Matt Brown and Leslie Law shared the third place finish. Matt rode Bob and Valerie Fish’s Talking Point BCF, a 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse, and Leslie was partnered with Tre Book’s Voltaire de Tre, a 10-year-old Selle Francais (Gentleman IV x Jasmina du Fresne, by Socrate de Chivre).

Buck Davidson and Erroll Gobey. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Buck Davidson was the final rider in the group who achieved two clear rounds aboard Natalie Sander, Lisa Darden, and Carl & Cassie Segal’s Erroll Gobey, a 9-year-old Holsteiner (Cassini II x Ulla II, Contender) . They were fifth on a time of 46.73 seconds.

Fourteen of the 35 starters jumped clear in the first round to return for the jump-off. Despite the unusually chilly day in Florida, fans still flanked the sides of the arena to cheer on their favorite pairs. A huge thank you is due to Scotty Keach and Max Corcoran for hosting what has become a favorite among competitors and spectators on the Ocala calendar.

If you struggle with lines and triple combinations in the show jumping, then you’ll want to check out James Alliston’s Grid Pro Quo. This is a helpful one, too, because once you’ve got yourself in over the first, you’re pretty set up and can take the time to focus on your own position.  [Grid Pro Quo with James Alliston]

Ruth Bley’s ‘Flaming Hot Cheeto’ aka Danito is the USEA March Horse of the Month. He won at Fresno last month, which made him and Tamie only the 20th combination since 2008 to win their first three international runs as a combination. Keep an eye on this one for the future. Keyboard warriors are an all too frequent feature in horse sport, and Danielle Goldstein is having none of it. Known for her feather-laced hair, Danielle found herself on the receiving end of nasty comments following her recent CSI5* win. The show jumper posted a video in response encouraging individuality. James Alliston & Pandora Top Twin Rivers Advanced

James Alliston and Pandora. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

James Alliston and the powerful Pandora were the big winners on the west coast this weekend as they topped the Advanced division of the Twin Rivers Winter H.T.

The pocket-sized palomino, a 9-year-old Swedish Warmblood owned by Laura Boyer, had the speediest cross country trip of the bunch, finishing just two seconds above optimum time in the horse’s Advanced debut to finish on a score of 43.9.

“I wasn’t really focusing on that (the time), but I was trying to be really positive,” James said. “She’s smaller, so you need a bit of pace to jump those big jumps and do the combinations in the right number of strides, so she’s not the type to jump a big course like that and go quietly. I don’t think she would jump as confidently. I was trying to be positive, and that translates to going fast for her.”

For James, producing a horse through this level relies heavily on their natural talent and will to do the job, and Pandora was certainly up to the challenge.

“I think she’s a real blood type. She has a lot of energy and she gallops well. She likes jumping and gets pretty up for it and is quick and sharp with her legs. Those are a few of her qualities that I saw early on that made me thing she could go up the levels,” he said.

James also found success at the Preliminary level, winning the 24-entry open division with Cassio’s Picasso.

Frankie Thieriot Stutes and Chatwin. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Our 2018 Fair Hill CCI3* Champions, Frankie Thieriot Stutes and The Chatwin Group’s Chatwin, had their first advanced run of the year to finish in second place. The power couple also proudly produced their best Advanced dressage score: a 21.8, which had them over ten point ahead of the rest of the pack. Frankie then let Chatwin cruise around the cross country, going clear but picking up 28 time penalties for a final score of 46.6.

Leah Breakey and Master Class. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Leah Breakey ended the weekend in third place with her own Master Class. This pair had one rail and 15.6 cross country time penalties for a final result of 58.5. Mallory Hogan and her Clarissa Purisima were fourth in their debut at the level, and the other two pairs — Robyn Fisher with Betawave and David Koss with Erusa — withdrew before the cross country.

Megan Sykes & Classic’s Mojah. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Megan Skyes was the big winner of the Open Intermediate division with her own Classic’s Mojah. In their first outing of the year, the pair earned a 25.9 on the flat and had one rail before going clear across country with 14.8 time penalties. Their win rests on a score of 44.7.

Tamie Smith and En Vogue. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

A clear cross country round with 11.6 time penalties gave Tamie Smith and Ruth Bley’s En Vogue a leg up from seventh to second place on a final score of 45.9. Amber Levine and her Cinzano had the fastest cross country round of the group for third place, and Andrea Baxter went fifth aboard her Enfinity.

EN would like to extend a huge thank you to Sherry Stewart for the lovely photos from Twin Rivers.

Honour the Riches. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Thoroughbred Event Mare/BN-N Packer

Honour the Riches, aka Bellamy, is a just turning nine-year-old OTTB mare (only raced 3 times all in one day). Bellamy is bay with two socks on both hind legs, 15.3hh, she stands for the farrier (front shoes) can go barefoot (great feet), road hacks, trail rides, can be ridden bridless, gets along with any horse, loads (by herself or with others), can be clipped full body (does not like bridle path), has been in clinics, and has traveled. She is grained only with one supplement (cool calories), she does have chiropractor every month to keep her in top condition. I did have her x rayed as she does have a hind left bump on her ankle but her x rays where clean, (its superficial). She is Ridden 5-6 days a week (weather permitting). She does flop her tongue out but only when she’s bored or extremely nervous (she does not do this while riding). She is not hard to deal with as she can be held by anyone, she has the same personality every where she goes. She can get hot, but that is only during competition as she loves her job and settles right in when entering the ring. I don’t not have her papers, although she does have a tattoo and is on the jockey club website. (I’m sure they would not be hard to receive)
Bellamys Eventing career started when she was six years old. She was in a strict training program for two years with lessons every week ridden by me. She has also been in lessons with a 3*** rider for a summer and a Lainey Ashker clinic also ridden by me. All very much liked her and her personality. She has shown in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Ohio. She has shown in intro all the way up to Beginner Novice. This year I was planning on taking her novice as she schools’ novice and training level very easily at home. She has shown in novice eventing dressage and scored moderately well. Her last beginner novice was October 2018 and she placed 2nd out of 10. She has no problem making time on cross country and she always has a clean stadium. Her dressage skills are still coming but she has amazing progression. She has done walk to canter transitions, downward transitions, shoulder inn, haunches in, turn on the forehand, and much more. She does not care about any cross country or stadium fence (ditches, water, tires, flowers, windmills, giant lollipops, Halloween décor, steps, etc.) In her entire career she has only refused two fences and that was her first cross country school ever. She can get hot when jumping and not for a beginner rider. She is not out of control but can be ridden by a amateur or someone who just wants to compete up to training level. She would be great for a teenager who loves a quick paced horse with lots of personality. She knows her job and loves doing it!! Only reason for selling is I know she will not be an intermediate or advanced horse and that is what I want. Otherwise I would love to keep her. Price negotiable to a good home. Located in Ohio.

Listings included in this article are randomly selected and confirmed to be current and active before inclusion. Sport Horse Nation features user-generated content and therefore cannot verify or make any warranty as to the validity or reliability of information.

‘He Was Magic’: Fernhill By Night Flies to Win Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Wearing a smile from ear-to-ear, Liz Halliday-Sharp gave all the credit to Fernhill By Night for their win of the inaugural $50,000 LiftMaster Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field.

“He hasn’t had a run this year but he knows his job and he just fought for me the whole way. I just couldn’t be more pleased with him,” she said of the 16-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Radolin x Argentina XII, by Argentinus) owned by Deborah Halliday.

With most of the course visible from the main arena, she heard the booming applause grow steadily louder with each fence — even when she narrowly missed her line to the penultimate effort, the Aiken Horse Park keyhole.

“We were flying, I was so focused I nearly blew past my line. I was like, ‘Whoa Liz, I’ll just angle it.’ But I was way up on time so I took a little pull there. The horse was class to just come in there and angle it for me. loved how he just operated off the turns for me, he can be a bit slow in his mind sometimes but today he was fully on it in every way,” she said.

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Though she jokingly calls him on old man, Liz thinks 16 will be “Blackie’s” year. “He loves it. He’s feeling great, and he deserve to win. He’s been a long time partner for me, and it took a long time to get him in a happy place. I think 16 is his magic year. Not a bad way to kick off the season,” she said.

Liz was riding for the Friends of The Animal Shelter (FOTAS), a nonprofit organization that aids the the Aiken County Animal Shelter.

Doug Payne and Vandiver. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Doug Payne knew the twisty course would suit Vandiver, and he used that to his advantage. He and the 15-year-old Trakehner (Windfall x Visions of Grandeur, by Mystic Replica xx), who is owned in partnership between Doug, his wife, Jessica Payne, and Debi Crawley, stuck their heels in for second place on a score of 30.8.

“He’s just a kick ass horse,” Doug said of “Quinn” who cruised around the track like he was born for it.  “It think Mark [Phillips, Course Designer] did a very good job. It’s very spectator friendly and though walking it it seems pretty twisty and turny, it was actually pretty smooth and flowed well. It was very good for the horses.”

William Fox-Pitt and Sandro’s Star. Photo by Shelby Allen.

William Fox-Pitt piloted his catch ride, Sandro’s Star, handily into the top three, a bit shocked that he had the second fastest ride of the day. “I’m not the quickest rider so I was quite surprised that I ended up being quite quick,” he laughed. Hannah Salazar’s 11-year-old Oldenburg stallion (Sagnol x Poetic Patter xx, by Nostalgia’s Star xx) skipped around the showcase to finish on 31.1.

“I think the poor horse had to put up with quite a bit of shock with a different rider charging around all these fences,” William said. “It was a bit of a wake up call but he was lovely horse, and he did the job well.”

Boyd Martin and Kyra. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The tiebreak between Boyd Martin and Allie Knowles, who were both equal fifth, came down to just two seconds. Boyd ultimately bumped into fourth after getting closer to the optimum time with Kyra, a 12-year-old Canadian Warmblood (VDL Ulando H x Wellsley, by Welstern) owned by Christine Turner. Allie was then fifth aboard Sound Prospect, a 17-year-old Thoroughbred (Eastern Echo x Miner’s Girl, by Miner’s Mark) owned by the Sound Prospect Syndicate.

Felix Vogg and Jürgen Vogg’s Colero were sixth on 33 points. Jennie Brannigan piloted both her rides, Nina Gardner’s Cambalda and Ibella, to 7th and 10th. Will Coleman secured the fastest ride of the day with the Four Star Eventing Group’s Obos O’Reilly in 3 minutes and 50 seconds. They finish with a score of 34.4. Clayton Fredericks rode into 9th with Lily and Mary Beth Geelan’s Luksor.

The leaderboard changed shape this morning before the final phase even started as 15 pairs withdrew, most of whom where saving their horses for Red Hills, which is next weekend. In the group that remained, nearly all found the time achievable. All in the top 13 went double clear.

If you missed any of our coverage, you can catch up here, and replays of all three phases will be available at this link.

Aiken Comes to Life on Bruce’s Field Cross Country

The Wilcox. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Taking a walk around the cross country course at the $50,000 LiftMaster Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field is a lot like seeing the dollhouse of your dreams come to life. Course Builder Eric Bull has outdone himself. The detail of the fences is outstanding — it’s like a teeny tiny city that is so quintessentially Aiken. Let’s take a tour around the city for ants, erm, the cross country course.

First the nitty gritty: the course starts around the track before winding through three of the main arenas. There are 22 jumping efforts with an optimum time of 4:12 across 2200 meters. All the fences represent some part of Aiken, and we start with a bomb, a literal bomb at the Savanah River Nuclear Solutions fence.

Stay for a while at the Palmetto Golf Club. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Now we sit on the porch for a drink at the Palmetto Golf Club, before worship at Saint Mary’s Church. Next riders take a hack through Hitchcock woods where they’ll find a life-size Fox Squirrel.

For all of you out-of-towners, you can come and go through the Aiken Train Depot. There’s so much more: The Wilcox, The Battle of Aiken and the Post Office. The sweet southern town really comes to life across Mark Phillips’ course. Check out the gallery below to really appreciate the detail.

Eleven pairs withdrew this morning, including third-placed Lauren Kieffer and Vermiculus. Many are planning to save their horses for Red Hills next weekend. The first horse will be out at 2:35 p.m. Don’t forget to tune in for commentary from our very own Jenni Autry joined by Alex O’Neal! You can watch it on EQTV or right here on EN.

Still On Top: Liz Halliday-Sharp Leads After Show Jumping in Grand-Prix Eventing

Liz Halliday Sharp and Fernhill By Night. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The usually “lazy” Fernhill By Night was feeling himself this afternoon in the show jumping for the $50,000 LiftMaster Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field. He and his jockey, Liz Halliday-Sharp, kept hold of their dressage lead after skipping around Michael Vaillancourt’s track.

“He jumped amazing,” Liz gushed. “Richard Picken helped me in the warm up. It’s rare that the horse even has a rub in the warm up, but he did rub one, which I think actually helped him. I think because he had that little touch it was on it — but he is a brilliant jumper. Unless I ride like an idiot, he jumps clear.”

For the 16-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Radolin x Argentina XII, by Argentinus) to be as successful as he was today, the key is carefully crafting his competition season.

“We don’t run him a lot anymore. He was amazing last season because we only ran him about every 8 weeks, and then he comes to the party really excited and ready to fight for it. Hopefully that will carry into tomorrow,” Liz explained.

With a hefty purse on the line, Liz confirmed with EN that she’s going for the win tomorrow. “He’s a big horse, and he’s not the world’s nippiest creature, but he can gallop. I think he’s up to it. Hopefully we’ll keep kicking, take a few risks and do the best that we can.”

Doug Payne and Vandiver. Photo by Shelby Allen.

For Doug Payne, this weekend with Vandiver is a sweet homecoming. After winning the Carolina International CCI4*-S (Formerly CIC3*) last year, the 15-year-old Trakehner (Windfall x Visions of Grandeur, by Mystic Replica xx), who is owned in partnership between Doug, his wife, Jessica Payne and Debi Crawley, dropped of the radar. Doug explained that they took the time to explore a stifle issue that had always nagged “Quinn.”

“It was a bit of a long journey. It’s been something that I think has actually gone on for a very long time. He had some irregularities in his right stifle, so we went in with a scope right around Kentucky last year, with Dr. Peroni at UGA. We were able to clean it up, and it’s honestly the best he’s felt since I’ve ever ridden him,” Doug said.

Back and feeling better than ever, Quinn had a clear round to remain on his dressage score of 30.8.

Lauren Kieffer and Vermiculus. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Lauren Kieffer and Vermiculus, Jacqueline Mars’ 11-year-old Anglo-Arabian gelding (Serazim X Wake Me Gently), settled right into third after a brilliant effort in the first two phases. “Bug” also stays on his dressage score of 30.9.

Looking forward to his 12th birthday this year, Lauren says that this can be a magical year for some horses. “I’ve always found that once they turn 12 they’re getting so much stronger. His jumping has gotten to a different level this year, so I’m excited. He’s certainly come out feeling more mature and really understanding what his job is,” she said.

William Fox-Pitt and Sandro’s Star. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Celebrity entrant William Fox-Pitt ends the day in fourth place aboard Sandro’s Star. William said the round wasn’t “as smooth as he wanted,” but since he had his first ride on Sandro only three days ago, I think we’ll forgive him this time.

He and the 11-year-old Oldenburg stallion (Sagnol x Poetic Patter xx, by Nostalgia’s Star xx) owned by Hannah Salazar produced a lovely double clear round for a two-phase score of 31.3.

Buck Davidson and Carlevo. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Carlevo climbed from 8th to 5th after a double clear round with Buck Davidson in the tack. The 12-year-old Holsteiner (Eurocommerce Caresino x Ramatuelle, by Levernois) owned by Carlevo LLC carries 32.1 points into the final phase.

Felix Vogg and Colero. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Looking down the leaderboard, Allie Knowles and Boyd Martin share a tie for sixth on 32.7 aboard The Sound Prospect Syndicate’s Sound Prospect and Christine Turner’s Kyra, respectively. Felix Vogg and Jürgen Vogg’s Colero are 8th after one pesky time penalty added .4 to their score. Jennie Brannigan delivered a clear round with Nina Gardner’s Cambalada for 9th and Boyd Martin makes a second appearance for 10th with Ray Price, who is owned by the Ray Price Syndicate.

Keep on eye on this space for much more from Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field. We’ll take you around the Aiken-themed cross country course tomorrow morning before all the action kicks off at 2:30 p.m.

Liz Halliday-Sharp Claims Dressage Lead in Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Like a fine wine, Fernhill By Night keeps getting better with age. He and Liz Halliday-Sharp often lead the pack after dressage, and that was once again the case today at the $50,000 LiftMaster Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field. The 16-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Radolin x Argentina XII, by Argentinus) owned by Deborah Halliday, was the first and only competitor to knock into the 20s on 28.7.

“I thought his trot work was good today, he can be a little bit flat sometimes because he drops me and he actually had a lot of lift today which was nice,” Liz said. “A couple bits I could have done better — both my right half passes were not as good as they should have been, so I think we lost a couple marks there. But I don’t think this is going to be a dressage competition.”

Liz sharpened up for the season with some pure dressage at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival this winter, where she and “Blackie” tackled their first Prix St. Georges. “I finished fifth in the open, which was not terrible, I didn’t totally embarrass myself, I wasn’t last,” she laughed. A massive accomplishment, we’d say!

Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The World Equestrian Games partnership of Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg were first to go, setting the bar for the group on 30.2 points. The triple winner of the Wellington Eventing Showcase, Boyd looks to extend his showcase reign in Aiken this weekend with Christine Turner’s 12-year-old Trakehner (Windfall x Thabana, by Buddenbrock).

Doug Payne and Vandiver. Photo by Shelby Allen.

After a competition break in 2018, Doug Payne and Vandiver have come back swinging. The 15-year-old Trakehner (Windfall x Visions of Grandeur, by Mystic Replica xx) sits third on a dressage score of 30.8. Lauren Kieffer and Vermiculus secured fourth place, and Jacqueline Mars’ 11-year-old Anglo-Arabian gelding (Serazim X Wake Me Gently) carries 30.9 into this afternoon’s show jumping.

Will Coleman and Off The Record. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Will Coleman and The Off The Record Syndicate’s Off The Record, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (VDL Arkansas X Drumagoland Bay, by Ard Ohio), are fifth after earning a 31.1. Allison Springer and William Fox-Pitt share a tie for 6th place on a score of 31.3. Allison rides Business Ben, a 9-year-old Thoroughbred (Artie Schiller X Min Elreeh, by Danzig).

Spectators were delighted to welcome William Fox-Pitt to Aiken, and they lined the fence to watch his ride with Hannah Salazar’s Sandro’s Star, an 11-year-old Oldenburg stallion (Sagnol x Poetic Patter xx, by Nostalgia’s Star xx) who is usually piloted by Chris Talley.

Buck Davidson and Carlevo. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Buck Davidson piloted Carlevo into 8th on a score of 32.1, and the Swiss transplant Felix Vogg is 9th aboard Colero, an 11-year-old Westphalian (Captain Fire X Bonia, Bormio xx) owned by Jürgen Vogg.

Tenth place is shared between Allie Knowles and Boyd Martin. Allie is riding Sound Prospect, a 17-year-old Thoroughbred (Eastern Echo x Miner’s Girl, by Miner’s Mark) owned by the Sound Prospect Syndicate, and Boyd is riding Kyra, a 12-year-old Canadian Warmblood (VDL Ulando H x Wellsley, by Welstern) owned by Christine Turner.

The fantastic ground crew is flipping the main arena now, and we look forward to the start of the show jumping at 4:00 p.m. It’s pouring buckets now, but the hourly forecast says it may clear before the jumping starts — fingers crossed! Don’t forget to tune in for commentary from our very own, Jenni Autry! You can watch it on EQTV or right here on EN.

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: Pine Top Highlights

Many of the big guns were out at Pine Top this weekend completing essential spring preparatory runs. With levels through Advanced, the Thomson, Georgia venue was buzzing with action. We’ve rounded up some videos from the weekend that was. Enjoy!

Rosie was great at Pine Top, jumping around the intermediate! We haven’t been out at this level in quite awhile and we both needed to get back in the groove. We definitely finished feeling ready for more! Such a good girl! Thank you so much for coming and helping and taking videos Paula Colt!!

Congo was his usual fabulous self cross country today at Pine Top. We practiced being more efficient setting up for the jumps and in our lines, since it is still early in the season I did not gallop as fast as I know he can. Thank you to Pine Top Eventing for making the drive north worth it, with an improved show jumping arena. Though we aren’t looking forward to the Olympics or WEG, 2019 is still a championship year! We’re looking forward to the Pan American Games to be held August 1-4, 2019 in Lima, Peru. Last week the USEF outlined the selection procedures for the yet-to-be-named squad. The qualifying period began last year, and continues through this spring with Bromont being the final opportunity to qualify. You’ll remember that the U.S. now relies on the Pan Ams for Olympic qualification. Four pairs will be submitted to the FEI no later than June 26th. The USEA has laid out the selection objectives in layman’s terms, and you can check it out here.

Never Outfoxed made a triumphant return to competition after a year off facing medical complications. Holly Payne Caravella shared the details of Fox’s “terrifying” year in a Facebook post after he finished fifth in the Intermediate-A division at Pine Top. An EPM diagnosis and a septic bout of cellulitis hospitalized the cross country machine, but Holly says he never stopped fighting. Please join us in sending well wishes to this pair as they head out on a new season.

Sunday Video:

I’m delighted to report that I got back into the ring this weekend after 6 months recovering from breaking my back and neck! I got to ride a horse I have admired for years and have been given the opportunity to lease to see if we gel as well as I hope we do. This is the absolutely fabulous little Devil Munchkin and I am so thankful to Sable and her family for working with me and giving me time. It was a generous thing for them to do and something I needed since it’s hard to try a horse when you’ve only just been allowed to start jumping. Before yesterday “Kermit” and I had only jumped once together at home. Today he put in a lovely round in the $5,000 1.25 Classic to bring home a ribbon and a huge amount of gratitude from me 😊My Rubens🦄 stayed at home, but I am pumped to ride him in less than two weeks at the Eventing Prix Invitational. Today was an essential first step practicing under pressure to prepare for that fun class. My heart is full. Thank you to my husband, family, and friends who are family, and finally last but not least, thank you to everyone at Overlook Equestrian who simply make this possible. 💗Animo USA / The Animo Experience.com CWD Alberto Fasciani Fleeceworks McCauley's Equine Formulas Choice of Champions

Tuesday News:

World Equestrian Center confirmed this week that they now have nine cases of equine influenza. The Wilmington, Ohio venue has the nine horses in isolation as they recover. The facility is in the eighth week of its winter series, so the on site veterinarian in addition to the officials have stepped up their disease prevention protocol. [Update: Nine Confirmed Cases Of Equine Influenza At WEC]

Speaking of influenza, officials in the UK have nailed down that a new strain of the virus is behind their current outbreak. The strain, Florida clade 1 H3N8, may be new, but vaccinated horses will still have some protection from it, and if they do become sick, symptoms should be weaker and stick around for less time. Pine Top + Ocala Weekend Intermediate Report

Justine Dutton and MGH Heartbeat. Photo by Lisa Madren.

If you had any doubts at all, after this weekend we can officially say that the season is fully underway. Heavy hitters took over the many divisions at both Pine Top and Ocala Winter I. We’ve got the scoop!

Justine Dutton won the Intermediate Horse division aboard her MGH Heartbeat in Ocala. Adding just 1.2 time penalties to their dressage score (29.3), they finished on a score of 30.5. Pursuing riding after a life-changing fall, Justine has thoughtfully developed the partnership with this mare, and their result today is a testament to her dedication.

Chris Barnard said it best: “There are many highs and lows with horses and today is definitely one of the highs.”

Hallie Coon and Captain Chacco. Photo by Lisa Madren.

Hallie Coon and Shannon Baker’s Captain Chacco were second on 32-points with 4.8 cross country time penalties. Lauren Lambert and her Fantastique were third (32.1) as one of only two pairs to make the time on cross country.

Liz Halliday-Sharp and The Monster Partnership’s striking grey Cooley Quicksilver wrapped up a wire-to-wire win of the Open Intermediate-A division on their dressage score of 22.9. Liz also won the Advanced combined test with Deniro Z, who is owned by the partnership of the Deniro Z Syndicate and Ocala Horse Properties.

Kylie Lyman and Joan Nichols’ Da Vinci Code bounded into second place (27.1) after achieving a double clear cross country, and Jessica Phoenix was third on a score of 28.5 with Don Good’s Pavarotti.

Kristen Bond and Enough Already. Photo by Lisa Madren.

In the Intermediate-B division, Katherine Rivera earned the win aboard her own Royal Lufttanzer. They finished on their dressage score of 30. Second place went to Kristen Bond and Liz Bond’s Enough Already on a one-rail score of 31.8, and third place was claimed by Buck Davidson and Erroll Gobey, who is owned by Cassandra Segal, Lisa Darden and Natalie Sandler (32.9).

A little farther north, the Aikenites converged on Pine Top Farm in droves. Colleen Loach and Peter Barry’s Qorry Blue D’Argouges won the Advanced/Intermediate division in their first outing since WEG. They led from start to finish, adding 6.1 cross country time penalties for a final score of 45.6. Lillian Heard and her LCC Barnaby were second (50.3) and Katherine Brown and her Victor Z were third with 54.1 points.

Jenny Caras topped the Open Intermediate-A division with her Fernhill Fortitude. They cruised to 9.6 time penalties for a three-phase score of 38.2. Waylon Roberts piloted Michelle and John Koppin’s Lancaster to a clean sweep of the B division. Their dressage score of 24.1 was the best in all Intermediate divisions.

Carla Abramcheck’s Quality Time (shown) came out swinging at her first show of the season, cruising around the Intermediate at Pine Top for the win. Marley and LVS Dassett Charisma also won the Intermediate after getting their best dressage score to date. Laurie Volk’s Looks Quality had her best XC run yet in the Intermediate, adding just one rail and some time to her score. The young mares are up next in the training.

Posted by Bourke Eventing on Saturday, February 9, 2019

Husband and wife duo Tim and Marley Stone Bourke both had blue ribbons to pack in their trailer. Tim won the Open Intermediate C with Carla Abramcheck’s Quality Time after moving up from eighth place. Marley topped the Intermediate Rider division with her own LVS Dassett Charisma.

Doug Payne was nothing short of consistent this weekend, finishing second in all three Open Intermediate divisions with his own Starr Witness, Lisa Wall’s Getaway and his Quantum Leap.
