Lauren Billys Holds Twin Rivers CCI4*-S Lead After Show Jumping

Lauren Billys and Castle Larchfield Purdy. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

The Twin Rivers CCI4*-S division looks much the same after Friday’s show jumping, where only one rail came down, but the standings remain unchanged.

After nearly losing her partner Castle Larchfield Purdy to colic last fall, Lauren Billys feels the pressure this weekend at Twin Rivers to give him the best riding possible. Her 2015 Pan American Games and 2016 Rio Olympic Games partner showed up with a strong dressage performance and then a faultless trip in Friday’s show jumping.

“I was nervous all day because I want to show him how he deserves to be shown. I felt like that was a hard course and it was really fun to watch everyone else ride because everyone is getting really good at riding in California and people were just riding really well today. It was encouraging and trying to be like them was a good way to be. He was in really good company,” Lauren said.

The 17-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding (Karistos x Hallo Purdy, by Hallo), owned by the rider and Purdy Syndicate LLC, sits on 29.8 as they look forward to James Atkinson’s cross country track.

Derek di Grazia and Ringwood Justice. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Derek di Grazia and his dreamy Ringwood Justice, an 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding (Ringwood Harley Carol x Ringwood Venus) also held second on 32.5.

Following the trend, Leah Breakey and Master Class, her own 10-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding (Cree x Night Destiny xx), also jumped clear to keep third on 41.9. Liza Horan and Lafite had the one unlucky rail down to complete the division on a two-phase score of 48.8.

Tamie Smith and Mai Baum. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

The CCI3*-L is pending a name change to the “Tamie Smith Division” after she took the top four dressage placings with Alex Ahearn’s Mai Baum (24.9), Ruth Bley’s En Vogue (25.6), Judy McSwain’s Fleecework’s Royal (29.7), and Ruth Bley’s Danito (30.3), respectively.

Tamie Smith and En Vogue. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

The CCI3*-L is the only 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier on the west coast this year. Click here to view a full list of Pan Am Games qualifiers, including 2018 events, and selection info.) Pan Am Games eventing will take place on Aug. 1-4 in Lima, Peru.

Frankie Thieriot Stutes and Chatwin. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

The Advanced CT features a few of our five-star hopefuls including Kentucky-bound Frankie Thieriot Stutes and Chatwin, who won the class with 0.8 show jumping time penalties on 27.5, and Badminton-bound Tamie Smith and Wembley, who were second on 31.4. Sabrina Glaser was third on 44.5.

Madison Temkin and Dr. Hart. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

In the traditional Advanced division, Madison Temkin and her Dr. Hart reign supreme. They lead the division after the first two phases on 39.8.

Marc Grandia and Campari FFF. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Marc Grandia and Team Rebecca’s Campari FFF are second on 43.6, and Gina Economou is third with her own Exclusive (44.4).

Riders look forward to an exciting day of cross country, and you can watch it all from home thanks to Ride on Video. Find the live stream information at this link.

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: Sharon White’s Forking Good Save at Tryon

While we want our riding to be as close to perfect as we can get it, sometimes being an event rider is about making do when the going gets rough! Sharon White had one of these moments last weekend at The Fork at TIEC with Cooley On Show. Tim Hawkins was volunteering at Fence 16 A/B when he caught their save. A bobble at the table at A had Sharon a little off balance, but Louie didn’t change course at all, telling her “Don’t worry, I got this! Just hold on!”

Thanks Tim for your submission, and for being an awesome volunteer!

If you’ve taken a look at the Land Rover Kentucky CCI5*-L entry list, you may have noticed a new-ish name, Hazel Shannon. Five-star first timer? Hardly! She’s a double winner at the level, having won Australia’s Adelaide CCI5*-L in 2016 and 2018, and now she and Willingapark Clifford have made the journey to the Bluegrass State to test their skill against our lot. After following this pair a lot online, I’m looking forward to watching them in person!

Spellbound. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Spellbound is an athletic and sensitive mare with three correct uphill gaits who is bursting with talent for upper level Eventing but could also continue to excel in Dressage or Jumpers. Born in 2010, Spellbound is a 16.3hh impeccably bred Oldenburg –Soprano/A Jungle Prince/Rubinstein. Spellbound had a light start in her early years before she was put into classical dressage training at the age of six with highly accomplished Grand Prix dressage trainer Deborah Dean-Smith. In dressage competition she has received scores into the 70’s with 9’s for her gaits. She is correct and flashy in the arena and will win the Dressage. She is currently schooling second level dressage movements as well as her changes. She was started over fences in the fall of 2018 where she has shown incredible scope, footwork and bravery with all the athleticism for the upper levels. She has cross country schooled multiple times including banks, ditches, water and all types of fences. She is currently in a professional training program. Spellbound is microchipped and has a passport as well has a clean set of X-rays. No history of injury or unsoundness and no vices. This beauty has a big trot and a super jump with plenty of scope. Bold to the jumps but not hot, easily rateable, with a balanced rhythmic canter, she is confident through ditches, water, drops etc… Fun to ride, she could also show in the Hunters with her changes well in place. Located in Ocala until the end of March.

Tuesday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

Water Cube and Hillary Spicher in 2018. Photo via Whitney Spicher’s Facebook Page.

We are devastated to report that Area VII Whitney Spicher lost her horse, Water Cube, in a fatal trailer accident this weekend. Sudden poor visibility led to a 30-car pileup where Whitney’s trailer was rear ended. All human passengers were uninjured, and the other two horses on the trailer survived and are recovering.

Water Cube gained recognition in 2016 when he went from the racetrack to the eventing world. Then-owned Michael Phelps gave the ride to Phillip Dutton. But for the last few years, Cubey was Whitney’s unicorn. The EN team sends our condolences to Whitney and her crew. A Go Fund Me page has been started for anyone who would like to show some support to Whitney.

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Geldings Galore!

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

“Ask a Gelding. Tell a Stud. Discuss it with a mare.”

Geldings may be more agreeable, but there’s nothing wrong with that! Geldings can be willing, teachable and loyal partners. Here’s six of our latest geldings listed for sale on Sport Horse Nation:

Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Handsome TB 16.3hh 8 YO. Show mileage to 1.10 meters

8 YO 16.3 TB. This big handsome boy has looks and jumping talent. An uphill build with super form and scope, he is easy to jump, carries a great rhythm in the canter and has show mileage at the 1.10 meter level. Has had 2 seasons in Florida. Showed at HITS Ocala 2019 in Week 3 – clear in all 4 classes with ribbons in 3. Doesn’t need a 6 day a week schedule, he can have a week off and be the same horse. Well schooled on the flat, he has counter-canter and changes. Stands quietly at the ringside or in lessons. Excellent barn manners and an absolute self-loader and good shipper. Hacks out in company or alone. Video available. Lower five figures as we are heading back home soon. Located in Florida.

Millye’s Mojave. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Want to go to AECs this September? Come try Millye’s Mojave!

Millye’s Mojave: 2005 16.1h chestnut Thoroughbred gelding

This is your ultimate Novice packer! “Morris” is an experienced eventer and was the 2017 Beginner Novice Champion at the American Eventing Championships. He has already qualified for the 2019 AECs at Novice with two 1st place finishes this year. This brings his total win count to 7 throughout his career, all with his amateur owner. Morris is easy on the flat and over fences, and has a good lead change. He has scored as low as 20.5 in the dressage phase at competitions. Not only is he great to ride, but he is also a lovely personality in the barn. He is the PERFECT horse for a junior or amateur looking to have fun! Located in South Carolina.

Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Ready for Modified

2010, 16.2H TB gelding. He has done 6 training level events since Dec., placing 5th and 6th in the last few. These could have been wins and top 3 placings if his rider didn’t always mess up in show jumping. This horse is a super star, better than your average TB. He will probably finish the Florida season with a modified in prep for prelim and if that happens the price goes up considerably. He is a lovely mover, a nice round jumper, has auto changes, is brace cross country and very straightforward and easy going. Basically a very cool dude which anyone would be lucky to have. In Ocala until April then he heads back to Ontario.

Prince of Kiltealy. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Winning Preliminary Gelding

aka “Teal” is an 11 yr old 16.1 h Irish Sport Horse that has competed up to the CCI**-L. Multiple recent wins at the Prelim level but just as happy to jump around the lower levels. Perfect horse for amateur or young rider! Easy ride and over all great brain. Clips without sedation, loads, not spooky, ties. One owner since imported as a coming 5 yr old sourced through Law Eventing.

Only selling because I am a young financially independent professional and the only way to continue to bring more nice horses such as Teal into my barn is by selling them as well. Located in Florida.

Uncle Eddy. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Uncle Eddy: fun, fun, fun!

Uncle Eddy: 2009 16.1h bay Thoroughbred gelding

Looking to have fun this year? Then come try Uncle Eddy! This experienced event horse has competed through Training level, but schooled through Preliminary. He has top placings with his junior rider at Novice and Training, and is perfectly suited for a junior or adult amateur. Eddy is easy to be around, and would be a welcome addition to any barn. He has a super personality and is just as happy to go on a trail ride as he is to go to a show. A really fun horse! Only selling due to owner being in college with no time to ride.

Bahian Macadamia. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Lovely Upper level Event Prospect

Bahian Macadamia-16.3h, 8yr old, Cleveland Bay/TB, gelding. Wonderful disposition, excellent mover and jumper, brave, and super work ethic. Would be great for an adult amateur, young rider, or professional. In the 20’s at every show, and won his last Trainong level. No vices. Located Mansfield, Ga. Mid five figures.

Signs You’re a Pony Club Graduate Part II: Reader Submissions

Pony Club Mounted Games. Photo by Leslie Wylie.

Turns out it’s true: Once a Pony Clubber always a Pony Clubber. Joining Pony Club is like inserting a few specific neuroses straight into your DNA. Did you have a visceral reaction to our first post, Six Signs You’re A Pony Club Graduate? Congratulations! You’re in an elite club.

Status courtesy of Stephanie Jones .

And turns out, so many of these telltale indicators are so ingrained that I didn’t even realize they were all thanks to my Pony Club roots. Shout out to Hilltoppers Pony Club, South Region! Here’s eight more signs that are a dead giveaway:

1.“There’s the right way, the wrong way, and the Pony Club way.” — Jessie Wade

2. “You’re one of a select few who know what a ‘turn back’ is.” — Eileen Phethean

3. “Being nicely turned out for every event or clinic. Everything freshly cleaned — tack shiny, even the metal polished. Polishing my boots. Proper standing wraps – lots of padding. Horse spotless and shiny.” — Julia Davies

4. “The way you must twist the reins and secure them with the throat latch to lunge.” — Leslie Stoffel

6. “Breakaway, breakaway, breakaway. It’s a wonder we don’t have loose horses all the time but everything we tie to has some element of a breakaway string.” — Trish Morgan

Intermediate-ish Weekend Report: Copper Meadows, Ocala & Pine Top

While the booming Florida season is starting to wind down, the west coast is just getting started. It was a full weekend from start to finish — Here’s what happened across Ocala Winter II, Pine Top and Copper Meadows Winter H.T.

Both Ocala and Copper Meadows hosted Advanced combined tests. Alexa Lapp and Cambalda made their debut at the level as a pair and won with a dressage score of 31.5 and one rail down. Rebecca Hoos and Little Cruz were second, and Nita Sanfilippo was third with Alarmabull. Keep an eye out for these pairs this season!

On the west coast, heartthrob Mai Baum was the CT winner with Tamie Smith in the tack. He jumped clear and added .4 pesky time penalties to finish on 22.4. Hawley Bennett-Awad and Jollybo had a successful outing for second place to finish on 35.6 after having one rail down. This was their final California competition before they head east once again for the Kentucky CCI5*-L.

Back in Ocala, Kylie Lyman and Xuanatu won the Intermediate Horse division. With the fastest cross country trip of the group, this pair added only 3.2 time penalties to finish on a score of 34.6. Buck Davidson, who was tied with Kylie for first after dressage, finished second with Victor B Z (49.4).

Heather Jane Morris turned the leaderboard around in the Intermediate Rider division. Riding Jos UFO De Quidam, Heather climbed her way from fifth after dressage to win the class after a clear show jump and 6.8 time penalties. Jackie LeMastus was second with Indian Mill.

The World Equestrian Games combination of Lauren Kieffer and Vermiculus topped the Open Intermediate. “Bug” had another successful outing in a season where Lauren says he’s really maturing. He added 1.6 cross country time penalties to finish on 36.4. Ashlyn Dorsey came second with Stakkato II (38.2), and Leslie Law was third with JKF Vogue (38.5).

Olivia Loiacono-Putrino piloted her Waterford to win the Open Intermediate division at Copper Meadows. Adding 11.2 time penalties on cross country landed had them finish on a score of 36.9. Second place went to Megan Sykes and Classic’s Mojah who had 13.2 cross country time penalties added to their result. Phiero SR claimed third with Bunnie Sexton in his debut at the level. Finishing cross country  on the exact same time as your winners, they closed the weekend on 49 points.

Katie Lichten and Caitlin Silliman were the big winners at Pine Top Farm.

Cross country time penalties shuffled the results in the Intermediate Rider division, but Katie and RF Luminati held their wire-to-wire lead to finish at the top on a score of 43.5. William Kidwell and Tremolo laid down the fastest ride with only 1.2 time penalties, and for this they were rewarded with second place (44.7). The Litchten family dominated this class with Katie’s sister, Maddie Lichten, finishing third with Yarrow (48.7).

Caitlin and Ally KGO topped the Open Intermediate from start to finish as well. They were the only Intermediate pair to finish on a sub 30 score (29). Boyd Martin was second with Tsetserleg after having one rail and 2.4 time penalties.

Go Eventing.

Six Signs You’re A Pony Club Graduate

Chinch is Pony Club proud. Photo by Leslie Wylie.

Many eventers got their start in Pony Club. From Lynn Symansky to William Fox-Pitt, even the greats have Pony Club to thank for their foundation — including USEA President Carol Kozlowski:

Pony Club graduates are everywhere, and often they’re pretty easy to pick out. Here are six dead giveaways that someone is a graduate Pony Clubber:

1. Hanging up dirty tack is considered the 8th deadly sin. You wipe down and figure eight your bridle after every ride, every time.

2. A hyperfocus on safety. This isn’t to say that our non-pony club counterparts don’t care about safety, but after experiencing hundreds of safety checks, it’s hard not to have an eye for the small details that make a big difference. Want to test a possible alum? Hang a water bucket in front of them with the snaps facing outward.

3. You can bandage literally anything. A spider wrap? I could do that in my sleep.

4. Horse Management’s got nothing on your tack room. You have two of everything, and they’re all labeled. Extra girth? Check.

5. You always pack your grain in paper bags — and each bag is labeled with your horse’s name + Date + AM/PM. Even with other conveniences, old habits die hard.

6. You’re Pony Club Proud. You still have your pin that lets you show your support for the organization that started it all. While you might not me a registered member anymore, Pony Club has lifelong admittance. Once a Pony Clubber, always a Pony Clubber.

Can you think of other telltale signs? Let us know in the comments.

ICYMI: The FEI is cracking down on accuracy when jumping narrow fences this year. New under what’s being called the “Missed Flag Rule,” a the majority of your horse’s body must have cleared the height of the fence through the flags. Now that “scoot around” move won’t cut it. They offer more descriptions in this FAQ document.

Tuesday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

Taking a canter around the Carolina Horse Park. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The Carolina International Organizing Committee has been hard at work to ensure the cross country at the Carolina Horse Park is only the best quality. Since last year, they’ve opened new galloping lanes by clearing trees, and even more impressively, the FEI tracks have been roped off since last fall so that they can be best maintained for competition. Knowlbrook Farms deserves many thanks for their management of the “sacred ground.” Check out this video they shared from a few weeks ago:

Cross Country Course footing enhancements!

The cross country tracks are in unprecedented condition in preparation for the Carolina International and the Southern Pines Horse Trials with new and improved galloping lanes, extensive tree removal and ongoing seeding & fertilization. Most importantly, the FEI tracks have been roped off since last fall with no access as required to preserve and improve the ground for March 2019. Thank you to Knowlbrook Farms for taking on all management of our sacred ground. Enjoy this video shot on Feb 25, 2019!

Without the luxury of Florida to escape to, our friends in the UK had to patiently wait for better weather to kick off their season. In the last few weeks, top horses have had their first runs across Tweseldown and Oasby. [Three British gold medallists, a Badminton winner and 14 other superstars starting their eventing season]

Santa Anita Park may reopen as soon as March 22. It closed “indefinitely” on March 5 following a spate of deaths, and the surface has since been analyzed and “worked on.” The track will also implement new safety protocols including required permission application to train a horse, the requirement of transparent veterinary records and  the appointment of a new Director of Equine Welfare. [Santa Anita Main Track Could Re-Open for Racing March 22]

FEI Competitors be aware: clipping of horses legs on site of a competition is no longer allowed. The rule went into effect January 1, and restricts leg clipping only when the horse is physically on site. There are veterinary exemptions. [Clipping legs at shows no longer allowed under FEI rules]
