New International Eventing Competition to Debut in Le Mans in March 2022

The Pôle Européen du Cheval, an already well-respected French dressage and jumping venue, will be organizing its first international eventing competition from March 17-20, 2022. The debut Boulerie Horse Trial will take place in Le Mans, about an hour-and-a-half from Le Haras du Pin which hosted dressage and cross country portions of the 2014 Normandy World Equestrian Games.

The program includes a CCI3*S, CCI2*L, CCI2*S and CCI1* with a total prize fund of more than €17,000 alongside numerous prizes. The cross country course designer, Alain Ponsot, and his team have been hard at work building new obstacles, renovating the main track and improving the cross country tracks with sand. Marc Cheminat was named as the show jumping designer.

The event will also be hosting an Amateur Team Challenge reserved for amateurs who have not competed at 3* level or higher for at least five years. Riders in the CCI1* and CCI2*-S will be able to compile teams or two or three for an attempt at the prizes, awarded by the West Cheval saddlery with numerous gifts.

More information on this event can be found at the website here and on Facebook here.

10 Unique Airbnbs For Your Next Tryon-Area Event

I’m a big fan of Airbnb and Vrbo. I’ve booked accommodations through these sites everywhere from Rebecca Farm to Red Hills, Luhmühlen to LRK3DE, Badminton to Boekelo. Not only can they be cheaper than a hotel (always a plus for EN, on our quest to cover every important event in the world with a budget of literally zero dollars), they often have character and help create memories in a way that cookie cutter chain hotels just can’t.

In a new series, we are combing Airbnb listings for unique places to stay in some of the most popular eventing destinations. Previous editions: Ocala, Aiken. Today we head to the Tryon, North Carolina area which is home to USEA recognized events at Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE), Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) and WindRidge Farm.

Tryon’s Treasure ~ Walk to D-TWN Tryon ~ Disney+

I love the clean, white, minimalist aesthetic of this one-bed, one-bath condo and question the host’s willingness to contaminate it with dirty horse show people. “Tryon’s Treasure was just remodeled to be a cute and trendy space, sporting a cow hide rug, smart tv, and many other fun custom designed items such as a custom built table and shelves made to fit the space perfectly. It is a FUN area.”

Photo via Airbnb.

Sassafras Cottage Off Grid

This off-grid, primitive abode (think: composting toilet, rainwater collection system, tankless water heating, wood-burning stove)) isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. It was handcrafted by its hosts and is remarkably comfortable even without the “usual” creature comforts: “We built this house with a lot of love and determination and want to share it with like-minded folks who want to learn how they can gain huge financial freedom by a more modest and fulfilling lifestyle.”

Photo via Airbnb.

Boutique style Lake House with direct water access

While in Rome (er, Tryon) why not tack on an extra day or two on the nearby lakes? This listing and the next are on Lake Adger and have direct access to the water. We like this one for its modern take on cabin living.

Photo via Airbnb.

Cozy 5 bedroom cabin on Lake Adger with hot tub

You had us at hot tub! If you are bringing your whole barn to compete at TIEC, which is just a few miles away, this roomy cabin has plenty enough human “stalls” to go around. Plus, an idyllic outdoor living space for that end-of-day grill-out, lake access, movie projector and pool table.

Photo via Airbnb.

Silver Fox Farm Barn Apartment

You pretty much live at the barn anyway, so you’ll be right at home in this upstairs barn apartment. Located on a 48-acre ranch six miles from TIEC, it has two large rooms with 1.5 baths and a small kitchenette.

Photo via Airbnb.

Pea Ridge Cabin, circa 1825

Stay in a bit of history! This charming circa 1820’s log cabin overlooks the Harmon Field show grounds. It features two bedrooms and two baths, plus a full kitchen and laundry. French doors open to a deck with spectacular mountain ranges perfect for morning coffee and evening cocktails.

Photo via Airbnb.

Beautiful NEW Tiny Home on Pretty Horse Farm!

Naturally, we’ve got to include a tiny house (or two!) With its high ceilings and generous drenching of natural light, this one feels bigger than its 350 square feet. Located on a 15-acre horse farm, the screened in back porch with dining and lounging furniture overlooks a wildflower meadow and forest. “This is a safe and cozy spot that gives you the experience of peaceful country living, yet is only minutes from the conveniences of town!”

Photo via Airbnb.

The Little Haus-Tryon

Here’s another super cute one! “This cozy, well equipped, 410 sq. ft. home feels spacious with the trussed vaulted ceiling, open eat in kitchen, roomy sitting area with gas logs and a large covered front porch. Lots of wood and charm.” Less than a mile from Harmon Field, six miles from FENCE, and 12 miles from TIEC.

Photo via Airbnb.

The Loft at Parker-Binns Vineyard & Winery

Where my fellow wine lovers at, lemme hear you! This cozy and private loft apartment is located at Parker-Binns Vineyard & Winery, about five miles from TIEC. Enjoy a spectacular sunset overlooking the vineyards from the deck and be sure to visit the tasting room while you’re there.

Photo via Airbnb.

Modern suite with stunning views minutes to TIEC

Just a three-minute drive from TIEC, this private beautifully furnished suite offers a queen bed and all the modern amenities you could want — on an early horse show morning, that Keurig is going to come in handy. At day’s end, enjoy the outdoor spaces with chairs, fire pit and incredible mountain views.

10 Unique Airbnbs For Your Next Aiken-Area Event

I’m a big fan of Airbnb and Vrbo. I’ve booked accommodations through these sites everywhere from Rebecca Farm to Red Hills, Luhmühlen to LRK3DE, Badminton to Boekelo. Not only can they be cheaper than a hotel (always a plus for EN, on our quest to cover every important event in the world with a budget of literally zero dollars), they often have character and help create memories in a way that cookie cutter chain hotels just can’t.

In a new series, we are combing Airbnb listings for unique places to stay in some of the most popular eventing destinations. Previous editions: Ocala. Today we head to Aiken, South Carolina:

Photo via Airbnb.

Adorable “Tiny Dollhouse” Shipping Container

“Shipping container” may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you imagine overnighting in Aiken, but these converted one-bedrooms are totally cute! Originally built in the Netherlands, these sweet, charming abodes (the host has multiple — “Green Nest” and “Blue Jewel” are pictured above) traveled many ocean miles to get here. New, clean and private!

Photo via Airbnb.

Stable View — Hunt Box

One of the many beautiful things about competing at Stable View is that you can stay right on the grounds! The Hunt Boxes (eight apartments total) are one-bed/one-bath apartments with two queen beds and one pull-out couch. They also have their own kitchenettes, with access to a fully equipped kitchen located near by. And, most importantly, stalls and paddocks are available — contact them for additional pricing and details.

Photo via Airbnb.

Blueberry Bungalow – Equestrian friendly/CLEAN!

This fun, contemporary and lil-bit-funky bungalow has its own private entrance and is “equestrian friendly” (which we think means that, being on five acres, there’s plenty of room for turnaround in our big trucks!) It’s a mile from the Whiskey Road/Chukker Creek Road intersection.

Photo via Airbnb.

Dreamcatcher Cottage

Rainbow sold separately. Yet, this one-bedroom/two-bed/two-bath cottage on the privately owned 26-acre farm has plenty of allure: massive windows, an open floor plan, and shared large in-ground saltwater pool. There’s also generous parking and room to roam on 26-acres. Stalls are available — please inquire for rates.

Photo via Airbnb.

Aiken Apartment on Quiet Horse Farm

In addition to Stable View, there are a few other Aiken-area listings where you and your horse can bunk up on the same property — or even under the same roof. Here’s another one, located in the picturesque Montmorenci area of Aiken.  The footing looks nice!

Photo via Airbnb.

Virtue Farm

This pristine, modern gated farm has two-bedrooms and two-baths. Inquire about bringing horses, as there are four stalls, a private arena, tack room, and walk-out paddocks also available. We love the monochromatic color scheme and horsey decor!

Photo via Airbnb.

“Batchelor’s Hall” Hip, Luxurious & IN TOWN

I don’t know what it is about big, loud wallpaper prints and clawfoot tubs in bedrooms, but it’s like this house just GETS me. Owned by a designer, this newly renovated playhouse is “playful, witty, sexy and luxurious,” not to mention a short walk to Bruce’s field. There’s also a fenced yard for dogs, which I know you know is a siren song for horse people.

Photo via Airbnb.

Stunning Downtown Aiken Home

One cannot speak of this home without first acknowledging its heated saltwater pool and … #bathroomgoals. It manages to combine traditional Southern charm (porch ceiling fans, swoon) with a downtown urban quirkiness that will appease the aesthetic appetites of eventers with both city mouse and country mouse tendencies.

Photo via Airbnb.

The Guest House & Stables at Quiet Oak Farm

This ” little space with big style” is located at the end of a long gravel drive on the 5.5 acre Quiet Oak Farm. This small space has been carefully crafted using performance fabrics, designer wall coverings, and luxurious custom finishes, and is just five minutes from downtown Aiken. Overnight stabling can be arranged on the property in one of five matted 12×12 stalls with access to a Grand Prix size arena with synthetic footing.

Cottage With Horse Paddock Near Aiken Horse Park

Stay in a modern, relaxed private home on a 2.3-acre estate complete with a horse run-in shed with turnout. A nature trail through a pine forest is accessible right off the front deck. Enjoy a peaceful country setting with modern amenities.

Thursday Video: Dabbling in Grand Prix Dressage

Doug Payne, wearer of many upper-level hats, has been dabbling in Grand Prix dressage with his 2019 Pan Am Games partner Starr Witness. This 11-year-old Dutch mare (Chello III VDR x Carmen, by Veneur) is already hard enough to beat in the sandbox — thank goodness tempi changes, passage and piaffe aren’t included in eventing dressage tests!

“The Ginj is gettin real!! Grand Prix here we come, throw in another 4*L this spring for good measure if all goes to plan!”

Best of luck to this multi-talented pair.

Tuesday Video: A Few Fresh Fernhills

There are now over 200 horses registered with the FEI with the Fernhill Sport Horses prefix. Carol Gee, an experienced Irish eventer with an eye for matching horse and rider, founded the brand back in 2005, catering to all budgets and levels.

A few of my favorite names: Fernhill Check Your Pocket, Fernhill Disco, Fernhill Feel Happy, Fernhill Footsie, Fernhill Friend Request, Fernhill Gump, Fernhill Mr. Cool, Fernhill Playboy, Fernhill Tastic … I could go on and on.

Most of all, I love watching Fernhills making a name for themselves stateside. Here are a few recently spotted in Florida! Many thanks to our good friend, The Horse Pesterer, for most of these videos.

Go eventing.

10 Unique Airbnbs For Your Next Ocala-Area Event

I’m a big fan of Airbnb and Vrbo. I’ve booked accommodations through these sites everywhere from Rebecca Farm in Montana to Red Hills in Florida, Luhmühlen in Germany to LRK3DE in Kentucky, Badminton in England to Boekelo in The Netherlands, and many many more. Not only can they be cheaper than a hotel (always a plus for EN, on our quest to cover every important event in the world with a budget of literally zero dollars), they often have character and help create memories in a way that cookie cutter chain hotels just can’t.

Do I have distinct memories of all of the Motel 6s I’ve stayed in at events since 1993? No. But do I remember that Airbnb tipi at a bison farm I slept in at Rebecca Farm one year? Yes, and I will forever.

Bison aren’t as nice as you think they are.

Anyway, in the spirit of horsey travel adventure, we’re launching a new series on Airbnbs to check out the next time you’re eventing in a well-trafficked horsey area. Since it’s winter, let’s start with Ocala, Florida (next up, Aiken, SC!). Some of these are located within comfy driving distance of eventing venues; others, you might want to tack on as a reward for winning and/or just-not-falling-off at your event. Whatever is your definition of success, there is no judgement here.

I’ve tried to list these in cheapest-to-fanciest order,  because that is who I am as a person. Rates vacillate according to date and demand so check the links. And, enjoy!

Beautiful Farmhouse Tiny Home

I’m 5’2″ on a big hair day so maybe it’s just me, but I love Airbnb tiny homes! This one in Citra is in a quiet RV park that includes a community fire pit and free morning coffee. For all you Tiger King fans out there (?), there’s an exotic zoo down the road or you can head over to the springs and enjoy a relaxing, post-horse trial day in the water. More neat-looking tiny houses are available through Homestead Tiny Homes in Williston — here’s a sample Airbnb listing.

Photo via Airbnb.

New Retro style camper with loads of fun built in

How cute is this retro-style RV? The little kitchen and dining area looks like a ’50s diner, there’s a Queen Murphy bed, and the setting is in the owner’s beautiful food and flower laden yard with plenty of privacy and a tranquil view of farmland across the street. But don’t get the wrong idea — there are plenty of modern amenities.

Photo via Airbnb.

Equus Inn

OK, so even though it’s listed on Airbnb this is actually a vintage boutique hotel. The Equus Inn features 152 recently remodeled rooms, all featuring Ocala’s rich equestrian history. Amenities include a self-serve bar with wine and craft beers, a heated swimming pool, a gym, and fast wifi. And, of course, ALL the horsey decor!

Photo via Airbnb.

Blueberry Downs Farm Stay Glamping

This unique country getaway is surrounded by birds singing, farm animals (chickens! cows! and, while not novel, still fun, horses!) and a romantic train whistle in the distance. The roomy Bell Yurt-style team includes a plush king-size bed, AC/heat, lighting and a charming stone campfire pit.

Photo via Airbnb.

Enchanted Oaks Farm Experience (Main house)

This would be a great fit for a small group or family, as it can sleep up to six guests. Enchanted Oaks Farm has all the animals: horses, of course, plus cows, goats and even a zebra and adorable wallaby! Other accommodations are available on the property, including teepees.

LakeHouse Villa, Golf 4Springs & Manatees Nearby

Canal-view villa with a jacuzzi tub? If intense training or a long weekend horse trial have you feeling … stiff, make this your mecca. This two-bedroom listing is near Crystal Springs, a shimmering blue winter watering hole for manatees.

The Hawthorne – Close to WEC – Spacious Three Bedroom Home

Are we playing a game of go-big-or-go-home now? I think we are! This swank abode is in a swank gated community with lots of places to chill including a swank club, swank pool and swank spa. The hosts have other properties available as well.

Summer Dates Open! Luxury Equestrian Ranch

This four-bedroom, four-bath estate may be booked up during snowbird season but maybe you can book it if you plan ahead. Located at the the Royal Gypsy Vanner Ranch (this is Florida, motherland of Gypsy Vanners, after all) This rustic luxury home is centered in the middle of the 80 acre horse farm and there are also 20 stalls available to rent.

Groton House H.T. Draws Its Historic Run to a Close

Anna Loschiavo and Prince Renan at Groton House Farm HT 2017. Photo by Abby Powell.

Groton House Farm in Hamilton, Massachusetts, owned by the Winthrop family, has been an eventing institution since the late ’50s, pre-dating even the United States Combined Training Association (USCTA, now USEA). It has loyally served the full spectrum of the eventing community, from young riders tackling their first event to international competitors.

We have nothing but eternal gratitude and well wishes to Ann Getchell, the organizing team, devoted volunteers and all those who made Groton House H.T. such a special one, as they announced yesterday that the USEA sanctioned event will be drawing to a close:

“Sadly, having had to cancel twice in the past two years due to the pandemic, and facing an uncertain (and in any case limited) future, we have concluded that the time has come for Groton House to call it a day.

“It is something we haven’t contemplated until fairly recently, but the pandemic has only hastened the inevitable. None of us is getting any younger, and nothing lasts forever.

“We have had a great run, thanks to all the people including volunteers, competitors, officials and farm and logistic support personnel who have made it happen for so long.

“The game may have changed over the years and we may have been old-fashioned, but we like to think we always did it right: the phases in the right order, courses that actually went across the country, and that glorious victory gallop at the end. We will miss it.

“Thanks, everybody, for your loyalty, your help, and your friendship.”

We are happy to hear, however, that the Summer and Fall Classics will continue to run. These unsanctioned three-phase events are held for Beginner Novice and Elementary riders and horses, as well as hosting Elementary through Preliminary dressage. You can learn more here.

Thank you, Groton House, for your past and continuing contributions to the sport of eventing in the U.S. .

Lauren Billys Awarded Southern California Equestrian Sports’ 2022 Grant

Lauren Billys and Castle Larchfield Purdy. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Hardworking eventers deserve all the support they can get. We’re glad to see Southern California Equestrian Sports (SCES) financially assisting some of equestrian sport’s most deserving athletes. Among them: two-time Puerto Rican Eventing Olympian, California-based Lauren Billys who was awarded a grant of $7,500.

SCES, an equestrian non-profit organization specializing in fundraising support, awards five grants annually. Other athletes awarded grants include U.S. combined driver Jacob Arnold ($7,500), who in 2021 competed in the FEI World Driving Championships, and top US U25 dressage rider Hope Cooper ($2,500). Hope committed to four months of dressage training in Germany after the CHIO Aachen U25 was canceled. Desert International Horse Park ($1,500) and Nilforushan Equisport Events ($2,000) were additional recipients.

“We are very proud to be part of their fundraising efforts and pleased to help them continue to move forward,” said Dave Kuhlman, President of the SCES. “The two organizers, Nilforushan Equisport Events and Desert International Horse Park, each have played an important role in bringing top quality FEI shows to the West Coast in Grand Prix jumping and dressage, respectively. We hope we can help them continue to grow and prosper in our sport.”

In total, SCES awarded more than $20,000 in grants to assist those in the equestrian community in their pursuits.

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Maryland 5 Star Remix

Boyd Martin and On Cue. Photo by Abby Powell.

January just seems to creep on forever, doesn’t it? We eventers are ready for the the warm spring sun to shine and turn all the things green again. It might feel like eternity, but the first North American five-star of the season, the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event (April 28-May 1, 2022), is just around the corner — have you got your tickets? And then we don’t even have to wait a whole year for the next one: the second annual Maryland 5 Star is on the calendar for Oct. 13-16, 2022.

Until then, at least we’ve got a fresh batch of Maryland 5 Star highlight videos from US Equestrian to keep us entertained. These were both posted on YouTube today. Enjoy, and get excited!

Fight back against colic and digestive upset.

Neigh-Lox® Advanced provides a scientifically advanced blend of ingredients that work synergistically to maintain your horse’s digestive tract in peak condition by supporting both the gastrointestinal tissues and the beneficial bacteria that populate the gut. Maintaining a healthy digestive tract reduces the risk of colonic and gastric ulcers, colic, laminitis related to hindgut acidosis, and oxidative stress that damages digestive tract tissues themselves. Horses with a well-balanced GI tract have good appetites, absorb more nutrients from their diets, maintain a strong immune system, and stay healthier.

The horse that matters to you matters to us®.

Tuesday Video: Tamie Smith + Ian Stark = #XCgoals

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tamie Smith (@tsmitheventing)

Tamie Smith is the human embodiment of an Ian Stark cross country course — you better have ice in your veins if you’re going up against her. She’s brave, in the same way you have to be to throw your heart first over one of Ian’s signature rider-scarer fences, and yet a consummately empathetic horsewoman — the same way Ian’s fences read like poetry to horses but sometimes as a huge, daunting novel to riders.

And, not unlike the massive impact Ian has made on our sport as both a rider and a course designer, Tamie has invested and continues to invest in the big picture. Yesterday’s USEA profile, “The USEA Lady Rider of 2021 is Leading the Charge in Elevating Eventing Competition on the West Coast,” aptly captures Tamie’s commitment to not just her career, but to the eventing community.

We love seeing these two legends in a collaborative space together, as they were at a Galway Downs fundraiser clinic this month (see video above). The idea of Tamie improving even further as a rider, or Ian as a designer, is … what’s the word … scary?

Go Ian. Go Tamie. Go Eventing.

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Dappled Greys for Days

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

You know what dapple grey looks like. But do you know what causes this coat pattern, which is a unique sort of thumbprint to every dappled horse? And why are some horses are grey, anyway?

Despite the fact that I’ve owned at least two grey horses endowed with dapple patterning (side query: is “dapple grey” or “dappled grey” the correct nomenclature? I mean, heck, is it even “grey” or “gray”?!?) these deep questions have never before so much as crossed my mind, until today. So I did what any semi-fossilized old equestrian journalist living in the year of our Lord 2022 would do: 1) dig through veterinary journals, (2) experience feelings of exhaustion and overwhelm, and (3) consult Google.

According to a wide variety of reputable Internet sources, being born grey is largely a matter of genetics. The grey allele gene is dominant: “Grey mare + grey stallion = grey foal;” but also “non-grey mare + grey stallion (or vice versa) = foal with 50% chance of being grey if it carries the less dominant form of the grey gene;” and then “non-grey mare (yet is a carrier of the gene) + non-grey stallion (or vice versa) = the foal … could be grey?

And then there are the dapples, a result of mixed pigmentation in the hair. Yet-to-be-solved mysteries: why? What evolutionary purpose, if any, does dappling serve? It is, certainly, an ephemeral phenomenon: dapple gray horses will whiten at different rates, but most are nearly completely white by the age of 9.

Not unlike my hair by the time I get finished writing the intro to this otherwise straightforward article.

Here are four dapple grey (or is it dappled grey? please, if you have an opinion, enlighten me in the comments) horses currently featured on Sport Horse Nation that could be your next future sparkling white superstar.

Tuesday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feed

Love this super cool concept from the one-and-only Amy Dragoo. Her Instagram (@dragoophoto) is always an inspiration, and be sure to check out your horse show proofs at her website here.

Onward to your Tuesday News & Notes, which have a theme today — they’re all profiles I’ve enjoyed reading/watching this week:

What more can be written about Boyd Martin? As a journalist, getting assigned to profile one of the biggest riders in the land is exciting on one hand, but daunting on the other. Superfans of the sport have already read one million profiles of Boyd Martin, not to mention heard one million interviews and watched one million videos of his rides. I really admire Chronicle of the Horse writer Laura Lemon’s work, and she manages to bring something fresh, special and thoughtful to the table in this recent Boyd feature. [On Cue And Boyd Martin: Meet The Chronicle’s Overall Horse And Eventing Person Of The Year]

What more can be written about Tamie Smith? On a related note, the USEA just published an inspiring profile of another of America’s winning-est eventers, Tamie. Author Summer Grace delves deeper than Tamie’s in-the-saddle prowess, highlighting not only her impact as a  fierce competitor but as someone who is truly invested the sport’s future. “I plan to be involved in this industry probably for much longer than I am even riding,” she says, “so it is important to me to try and make it better for those coming up after me.” [The USEA Lady Rider of 2021 is Leading the Charge in Elevating Eventing Competition on the West Coast]

Not all the best profiles are of five-star riders. Another thought-compelling Chronicle profile, by Allie Conrad: the story of Rachel Galambos and HS Wolf, her homebred Hungarian Warmblood-Thoroughbred cross (HS Warado—Colonel’s Daughter). Doing right by a horse means meet them where they’re at and being flexible with your ambitions. [Back From The Brink: Galambos Never Stopped Advocating For Her Homebred]

And … one more, from Clare Kelley of the USEA. In 2021 Cynthia Smith recorded 536 hours and 59 minutes of volunteer time, setting the standard with the most amount of volunteer hours recorded in a single year since the creation of the USEA Volunteer Incentive Program in 2016. The record-breaking number of volunteer time earned Smith the 2021 USEA Volunteer of the Year title. [2021 USEA Volunteer of the Year: Cynthia Smith and Her Record-Breaking Year]

Video: Little late to the party on this one, because I’m not exactly up on my non-horsey sports. I had to Google “Devin White” (FYI, he’s a Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker). He’s also a passionate equestrian.

Nico Morgan’s Most Epic Hunt Shots of This Season (So Far!)

British photog Nico Morgan is a living legend of equestrian art. In the mild-weather months he can be found shooting ringside at horse shows, tucked into galloping lanes at three-day events, or crouching trackside at steeplechase meets, but winter may be his most prolific — and dramatic — season. His work as a foxhunting photographer is unparalleled and truly brings the thrill of the chase to life.

Inspired by Nico? He’s been a generous mentor to many aspiring equestrian photographers via both one-on-one and small group sessions and his online photography courses. His blog, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are must-follows and you can take in the full scope of his many multimedia talents at his website here. And, of course, we encourage all to support this talented artist by purchasing his work.

Here are a few epic snaps from his Instagram during the current hunt season. Enjoy, vicariously!

Thursday Video: 360° Education & Training for Young Eventers

The Windrush Equestrian Foundation for young riders is the legacy of Christina Knudsen, a passionate British eventing rider. It was her dream to build up a training center where young riders learn what it needs to compete at a top-level in sports.

The Windrush story:

“In October 2015, Christina Knudsen found her dream equestrian property – Windrush. For several years she had been looking for the ideal property where she could finally settle with all her horses. After having been diagnosed with a very rare type of cancer in November 2015, she lost her battle in July the following year. Sadly, she wasn’t able to fulfil her own equestrian dreams, but, before passing away, Christina expressed her wish of making Windrush a foundation. More than anything, she wanted to give young, talented riders the opportunity to pursue their Eventing dreams.

“Thanks to the overwhelming support of a friend, Christina discovered this sport and had great ambitions for herself and for Eventing itself. This foundation is her way of carrying on those ambitions by providing much needed help and support to young eventers, helping them to sustainably fulfil their own dreams. Our aim is to honour Christina’s last wish and continue her legacy and passion for Eventing.”

Volunteer Nation: Grand Oaks & Stable View Need a Helping Hand This Weekend

Photo via Grand Oaks Resort FB.

The event season is off and running! And with it, a need for volunteers. Two recognized events are taking place this weekend: Grand Oaks H.T. in Weirsdale, FL, and Stable View Aiken Opener in Aiken, SC. Both have volunteer positions available, and perks!

At Stable View, for instance, benefits of volunteering include: great snacks, best seats at the event, you can meet new friends and learn about the sport from the experts, and lunch will be served! Also, a free schooling pass that can be used on a future Event Academy Schooling (note 1 pass equals 1 discipline, ie: 1 pass = Dressage schooling, 1 pass= 1 Show Jumping schooling, 1 pass= 1 XC schooling).

As always, you can earn merit points when you donate your time through the USEA’s Volunteer Incentive Program. Registering to volunteer through EventingVolunteers.com makes it easy and seamless to both find a job and shift as well as learn what your role will entail.

Tuesday Video: Welcome Back, Deniro Z!

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z narrowly missed the Tokyo Olympic Games when, just weeks beforehand, he was heartbreakingly withdrawn due to some bone bruising. Liz always said she felt confident he would be back in fighting form after a period of rest and rehab, and now he is, with big thanks to Renee Lane and her team at Lane’s Mark Farm for their work in his recovery.

Liz started hacking “Niro” out about seven weeks ago, and now he’s just had his first jump school back. Looking good, you two! Best of luck this year.

Season Ready to Heat Up at Stable View Aiken Opener

The latest arena coming along swiftly by Attwood Equestrian Surfaces and G.L. Williams & Daughter.

If the idea of getting up at o’dark-thirty in January for an early ride time doesn’t make you want to jump right out of bed, Stable View is offering some warm incentives this weekend: coffee, hot chocolate and hand-warmers.

From Stable View: “We hope to help competitors thaw out at sunrise with hand warmers available at both entrances (Gate 2 for day parking and Gate 3 for overnight parking), and a complimentary warm beverage table managed by our friend Ronnie (of tasty ribs fame). The help-yourself coffee and hot cocoa display will be stocked from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. near Ronnie’s food truck. Throughout the day, both Rider Lounges will feature a light breakfast (fruit, yogurt, cereal bars), assorted snacks, and beverages.”

Just another example of the first-rate hospitality that riders look forward to at Stable View, which kicks off 2022 with its first recognized event of the year: the Stable View Aiken Opener (Jan. 22-23). Organizers will be monitoring the weather — they will announce updates should anticipated precipitation and freezing temps compromise safe footing — so fingers crossed!

The event features Beginner Novice through Prelim divisions. From the looks of the sprawling 358-horse entry list, lots of folks are getting an early start on the season. Several riders have multiple rides: the busiest rider of the day is Arden Wildasin, who has six entries, while Emily Beshear, Courtney Cooper, Boyd Martin and Ryan Wood have five apiece. Hope Stable View is brewing a lot of coffee!

A few notes for competitors:

  • To keep everyone safe, please help us by complying with a temperature check upon arrival. Masks and hand sanitizer are available at Gates 2 & 3.
  • The Cross Country Course will be open for walks at 3pm on Friday. Riders may also collect their packets at that time.
  • Our NEWEST arena will be ready for Stadium Warm Up! The entrance is at the end of the Cross Country Warm Up field.
  • The entrance to Stadium will only be via the Causeway.
  • It will be chilly! Stable View will be doing all it can to keep you warm … there will be a fleet of buggies on site that can be rented through @thegolfcartlady.
  • Event photography will be provided by GRC Photo.

Winning novice packer

UPDATE: Mio competed in Novice at the November Full Gallop Horse Trial and won on a 29!!!

Mio has evented through novice recognized and schooled through prelim unrecognized. He’s steady in the bridle, rhythmical, and comfortable on the flat, and will jump anything you point him at, he loves xc and will always make time.

Mio is not a beginner horse he needs a intermediate to advanced rider, as he can be a spirited athlete, lunging before riding is helpful, and once you know him he’s very predictable.

He has been vetted before and you are welcome to vet him again.

Located in Salisbury, north carolina can also be tried in Aiken, South Carolina

There is a video of Mio on youtube titled “Fernand Mio”. Please contact me for more information.

Competitive and Safe Eventing Packer

Smoky Four lovingly known as ‘Gus’ around the barn is sadly offered for sale due to no fault of his own. Gus has been owned by just two amateur owners since he retired from the track in 2015. He was purchased directly from his track connections and 100% produced by his amateur owner through Novice before being sold to his current junior rider to help her learn to event.

Gus is a been there, done that type of guy. He is a COMPETITIVE Novice level eventer but has also spent plenty of time going for fun trail rides and hacks around the property. He is level-headed, safe, and fun. No vices. Plenty of scope to continue up the levels and fancy on the flat to earn dressage scores in the 20s.

Gus is an honest type that aims to please. Can take a joke (or lots of jokes) if you miss a distance or don’t quite hold the line. Uncomplicated and the same horse both on and off property. Trailers great, alone or with a buddy. Stands for the farrier and vet. Clips, ties, good for mane pulling too.

Currently schooling 3’3″. Confirmed leg yields, counter canter, trot and canter mediums, shoulder in and haunches in. Easy to get round.

Not a hard keeper. Happy to eat what you give him and easy to keep weight on. Has 4 shoes and good feet. Lives mostly inside. PPE welcome at buyer’s expense.

Priced to sell. Price will increase as competition record becomes up to date. Gap in record simply due to owner’s lack of time to ride and compete, which forces sale.

⭐️No XC jump penalties in career (BN-Prelim)
⭐️Dream horse ready to go 1* this season

He is the ultimate training level packer with talent beyond and lots of years left for his next partner. He has prelim miles, a recent win at Modified in 2021, consistently TIP winner, and never a XC jump penalty throughout his career (BN-Prelim). Ready for 1* and selling with FEI passport and JC papers.

Very capable horse quality enough for a professional yet experienced enough to teach an upcoming rider stepping into their next horse. Dean is solid and requires no maintenance, hacks out alone, and has no vices. A perfect home is very important. Young professional regretfully selling due to career opportunities.
