A post shared by Elizabeth Mccallum (@lizziemeventing)

Events show love to their volunteers in many ways — free cross country schoolings, boxed lunches, awards, swag, and more — but perhaps the best perk is having a front row seat to the sweetest moments in the sport.

Here are six events that could use a helping hand from YOU this weekend!

As always, you can earn merit points when you donate your time through the USEA’s Volunteer Incentive Program. Registering to volunteer through EventingVolunteers.com makes it easy and seamless to both find a job and shift as well as learn what your role will entail.

Tuesday Video: The Spots Have It at Ram Tap

We love seeing splashy-colored horses not only taking the stage but stealing the spotlight at events. An Appaloosa and a paint Quarter Horse both claimed blue ribbons at Ram Tap H.T. on Feb. 18-20.

Beginner Novice Rider was won by Marilyn Schackner and Just You Wait, her own 10-year-old Appaloosa gelding. The pair was tied for 1st after dressage and show jumping on a PR dressage score of 24.7, then sailed around cross country to secure their victory.

And in Sr. Novice Rider, Michelle Meghrouni and Gina Economou’s To the Moon and Back jumped from third after dressage to second after show jumping then into the lead thanks to a clear and quick cross country round.

Congrats to these and all the winners at Ram Tap!

Introducing ‘Tailgate on the Turf’ & Other Notes for the Stable View Spring 2/3/4*

We here at EN are big fans of tailgating — watching the action at close range with a drink in hand and buffet of snacks within reach is second only to being in the saddle ourselves. With that in mind, Stable View is for the first time devoting areas at the perimeter of its Pavilion to 50 reserved tailgate spots for its big spring event in Aiken, SC (April 1-3, 2022).

Tickets for “Tailgate on the Turf” will go on sale soon, so keep an eye on Stable View’s email and social media (Facebook, Instagram). We’ll be bringing you all the latest previews of Stable View’s Spring 2/3/4* event, for which entries are still open through March 15. Entry info here! Only 350 entries will be accepted; others will be placed on a waiting list.

A few other notes for the upcoming Spring FEI CCI-S 2/3/4* & USEF/USEA H.T.:

  • PLEASE note the new FEI arrivals protocols. Details can be found on the Omnibus, including that riders must download the FEI HorseApp and start monitoring temperatures three days prior to arrival.
  • SV is accepting up to 350 entries, then opening a wait list.
  • Stadium will take place in SV’s “Tree” Arena near the Boyd Martin/ETB XC Schooling Field, and Dressage will be held in the Outdoor and Hunter Arenas.
  • SV’s two Rider Lounges (Hunt Boxes and Springfield Church Road) will be open with snacks and beverages.
  • All paddocks have been reserved. All on-site accommodations are sold out. There is a discounted rate partnership with the Fairfield Inn & Suites Aiken.
  • For those stabling along Springfield Church Road, your stall numbers correspond with your numbered overnight parking. After unloading, PLEASE reverse into your numbered parking spot. Trucks and trailers should NOT park horizontally across parking spots.
  • Stabling Entrance is via Gates 2 or 3.
  • Don’t forget to join SV for its signature Graze & Gaze Thursday through Saturday evenings from 5pm until 7pm in the Pavilion.
  • Early arrivals and late departures can be accommodated by contacting the Stable View Office.
  • SV welcomes veteran Olympic Officials: TD Alec Lochore (Great Britain) and Chairman of the Ground Jury Christian Landolt (Switzerland).
  • All Dressage and Stadium feature Attwood Equestrian Surfaces.
  • Golf Carts are available for rent through The Golf Cart Lady at 706-940-6056.
  • Event photography is provided by GRC Photo.
  • Prize money will be distributed as follows: 4* $30,000, 3* $20,000, and 2* $10,000. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes will be awarded for all national divisions.

Volunteer Nation: Four Events That Could Use Your Help This Weekend

IMO this photo from Majestic Oaks won Instagram last week. Can you imagine being jumpside, cheering her on?!? I would lose my mind, probably break out some color-coordinate pom-poms (well after she was past the jump, of course, as not to spook her horse).

I’ve run a few marathons and I can assure you, the only thing that ever got me to the finish line was the cheer of folks urging me and other runners along on the way. Jump judges can double as those cheer stations, little bubbles of support along the ups and downs of any cross country run.

Can you help with any of these events taking place this weekend?

Tuesday Video: Congrats to EN Alum Lila Gendal on Her First Advanced!

Lila Gendal is one of the most determined and talented up-and-coming riders in U.S. eventing sport. The earmark of her blogs for EN a few years back was a cerebral processing of the training process, and its ups and downs. We’re excited and proud to see her now reaching the higher-most levels of the sport, having completed her first Advanced horse trial last weekend at Rocking Horse II Winter H.T. Congrats, Lila and BT Just a Rebel! They finished 11th in the 21-horse Advanced Test B division, which was largely populated by five-star riders.

Hope we aren’t making you blush too much, Lila, in sharing these videos from The Horse Pester!

Talented, Kind, Sporty Mare

Miss Florida: 2012 16h Argentine TB mare. “Rue” is a super sweet, adorable, and fun little athlete! She has evented through training level with ability for more, and would also make a super Child/Adult show jumper for someone who likes to ride a game and forward type. Currently schooling 1.10m confidently. She is a pleasure to handle around the barn and is ready to make her next owner very happy! Located in Ocala, FL. Asking low fives.

Classy Dutch Wb/Trakehner Mare. Suitable for any direction.

Zenith Vayda is classically beautiful and an elegant mover. She stands a stocky 16hh, and is wonderful to handle on the ground. In your pocket type of personality, always looking for treats. She enjoys being groomed and handled. Vayda is a low mileage model – originally purchased from her breeder as a 3 yo for a high school student to be a ‘second horse,’ Vayda never moved into ‘first horse’ position before her owner outgrew horses and moved to college. She was ridden inconsistently throughout the years by her young rider before joining our professional program. She has been in our full training since October of 2021 and has been a pleasure.

Vayda is trainable, and willing to work, with powerful gaits and a big scopey jump. She is forward but not particularly hot, and will jump anything you point her at. Can have a little bit of a mare-tude exhibited by dancing in the cross ties when girthed and being inconsistent in the bridle at times. All of Vayda’s personality speaks to her current green state of training, but it is clear that this is a horse for the future! She would be best suited to someone with some experience that understands this star has so much to offer. Beginners need not apply, as we feel this horse deserves to be correctly developed into the winner we know she will be.

Her sire is the notable Rubin O, a dutch stallion well known to produce talented and competitive jumpers. Her dam, Hillary, was a Trakehner that evented through the Intermediate level. Between this lineage and her obvious talent, we know that Vayda has a big future ahead of her.

Easy keeper. No vices. 4 flat steel shoes. Currently turned out alone. Good for vet and farrier. No soundness or health history. PPE from 10/21 available with lots of beautiful x-rays.

Located in Ocala, FL.

Sybil AB- beautiful talent and temperament in this imported ISH

Sybil AB- 2017 16.3 hand gray imported ISH mare by Nazar out of a Kings Master mare. This horse is the total package of brains and talent and it doesn’t hurt she’s beautiful too. She’s ready to continue her education with a jr or AA in a program. She will go far. She’s done two A rated hunter shows with an ammie and is entered at Majestic Oaks. No soundness or health issues or any special care requirements.

Located in Citra, FL.

Aura CF- winning training level horse competitive 1/2* for right rider

Aura CF is a 2010, 16 hand premium Oldenburg mare. Aura is phenomenally talented on the flat and a lovely jumper. She has many miles at training level including a win at the AECs. With the right rider she will be a winning 1/2* horse. She has not had any health or soundness issues and requires no special care. Not spooky, easy on the ground, beautiful to look at. Motivated seller as rider as stepped onto her big sister’s horse.

Aspiring Eventer Cora Bordley Awarded Inaugural Optimum Youth Eventing Award

Image via OYES Instagram.

Established in 2020, the Optimum Youth Equestrian Scholarship is a fund aimed at providing opportunity and mentorship to young riders from diverse backgrounds get a leg up with their riding. The latest round of quarterly awards for Winter 2022 was recently announced and included the Inaugural OYES Eventing Award, which is well-deserved by its recipient Cora Bordley.

Cora, please know that the eventing community welcomes and supports you, and we look forward to cheering you around a cross country course — or wherever your big dreams take you — soon!

Cora’s story:

“I was very fortunate to start riding at a young age when I was a child in PA. I loved the horses and riding, but I HATED the racist and toxic barn culture that permeated the sport. When I was in college, I was fortunate enough to stumble across the endurance community, and I was pleasantly surprised when they welcomed me with open arms despite my skin color. Unfortunately, my work schedule does not allow for endurance conditioning, but I was fortunate to find a nearby eventing trainer/ally. Additionally, because of my physical disabilities, I realized if I fell off a horse 10 miles from a checkpoint, I would be stranded, given the fact that walking is not my best skill.

“I am a person with big dreams, and I want to compete on a USEF level in eventing or showjumping. I am currently taking regular lessons and lease a horse, however there are financial limitations that prevent me from taking lessons as often as I’d like.

“As a para rider, I have personal beef with the para rider classification system and the fact that all para rides are relegated to dressage, which, no hate on dressage, is not my interest. Every disability is unique as a fingerprint, and I want to prove that a rider with disabilities can compete and be successful in any variety of disciplines.

“I am also re-learning how to ride due to a complex spinal cord injury called Syringomyelia. In layman’s terms, I have a cyst growing inside my cervical spinal cord which impacts my motor function, muscle strength, coordination, and more. I have found some amazing adaptations, but ultimately, I need more hours in the saddle to rebuild muscle memory.

“While I make a respectable income in my job, I am still a teacher who has significant medical costs. If I were awarded this scholarship, I would be able to pay for 11 lessons with my trainer which is huge in regards to rebuilding muscle memory and strength.

“My short-term goal is to compete in the 2022 summer show season. While I may not be the winner at any of these events, I want to make an important point that just because an individual is in a wheelchair or has physical disabilities, it does not mean they are any less capable of participating in the sport.”

Tamie Smith & Mai Baum Claim Advanced/Intermediate Win at Ram Tap

Tamie Smith & Mai Baum. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Tamie Smith and Mai Baum were uncatchable in the Advanced/Intermediate division at Ram Tap this weekend, finishing on yet another jaw-dropping dressage score of 18.6. It was the 16-year-old horse’s first time out of the start box since a top-10 finish at Aachen last fall and he easily bounced around Ian Stark’s course.

The iconic West Coast eventing venue, formerly Fresno County Horse Park, was rechristened Ram Tap this year to honor its past. This was its first event of 2022, a packed calendar of horse trials, schooling shows and educational activities. It featured Grasshopper through Advanced/Intermediate levels as well as TIP awards and a Novice team challenge.

Finishing second in the Advanced/Intermediate was James Alliston with Nemesis on a score of 28.4.

Tamie Smith was also third with Fleeceworks Royal.

James Alliston secured fourth place with his second ride, Paper Jam; Kim Goto Miner was 5th with Elle; and Bec Braitling was 6th with Caravaggio II.

Meanwhile, in the Intermediate, the top three spots went to Tommy Greengard with Joshuay MBF; Tamie Smith with Mai Tanzer; and James Alliston with RevitaVet Calaro.

Sunday Video: How to Bring Your Horse Back into Work

If you let your horse down in the winter, by February you’re probably thinking about if not already starting the process of legging your horse back up. In her latest vlog for the FEI, Australian eventer Han of @Han Equestrian outlines the process of bringing your horse back into work after an extended period of time off.

She starts off by going over a checklist of physical things to think about: nutrition, saddle fit, hooves, teeth, etc. Then she outlines some basic principles underlying the reconditioning process: “Slow and steady wins the race. I always like to think of it like when you go back to the gym after having time off. You don’t immediately go back to lifting the same weights or running the same distance — you build up to it and it is exactly the same with your horse obviously if you rush them too much at the beginning and they get a lot of muscle soreness they might get sour to the work and worst case scenario you might end up with an injury.”

Watch and get cracking on that fitness!

Thursday Video: Boot Camp in Jumperland for Tokyo Teammates

Intensive wintertime tune-ups can pay dividends later in the season, when a rail can mean the difference between coming to play and coming to slay.

U.S. Eventing’s Tokyo squad has been focused on final phase finesse in recent weeks, with Boyd Martin, Phillip Dutton, Doug Payne and Tamie Smith putting themselves to the test over painted poles at WEF, WEC, HITS Post Time Farm and Desert Horse Park.

Here are some videos of their jumper class rounds:

Zara Buren Memorial Award Winners for 2022 Announced

Olivia MacLeod courtesy of Teresa Mae Finnerty Photography

The Ontario Eventing Association, in partnership with the Zara Buren Memorial Foundation, has announced the recipient of the 2nd annual Zara Buren Memorial Award: Olivia MacLeod. Olivia will receive a $6,000 grant as well as a horse cooler and bonnet in burgundy, Zara’s show color.

Olivia competes at Training Level with her mare, Watch Me Skip Away (“Skip.”)

“I am so incredibly grateful to be selected as the 2022 recipient of the Zara Buren Memorial Award,” Olivia shared. “I would like to thank the Ontario Eventing Association, the Zara Buren Memorial Foundation, and the Buren family for this wonderful opportunity. I am really excited for this upcoming eventing season with Skip! This award is very special to me. I was lucky enough to see firsthand Zara’s talent, dedication, and strong work ethic. I will work hard and do my absolute best to honour Zara’s legacy.”

Fourteen-year-old Zara tragically lost her life on September 21st of 2020, while saving her beloved horse, Monkey, who had become trapped in a marshy bog. Zara is remembered for her kindness, drive for excellence, passionate love of animals and dedication to her horse and the sport of eventing.

The Zara Buren Memorial Foundation was established with the focus on helping youth with the desire, talent, and work ethic to pursue their passion. The Memorial Foundation supports the Zara Buren Memorial Award, given annually through the Ontario Eventing Association to a junior rider who exhibits a passion for eventing, sportsmanship and a commitment to their horse. Zara was a talented rider with an intense dedication to training and learning, always putting her horse first.

This year, a total of 17 junior riders applied for this award. The selection committee was comprised of members of the Ontario Eventing Association Board of Directors as well as Zara’s family.

Said Zara’s father, Robert, “Sabrina, Chloe and I were touched by the number of applicants and impressed by the strength of each submission. It is heartening that Zara’s legacy continues to inspire riders of all ages across the province, setting the bar for excellence, sportsmanship and horsemanship.”

“Once again, in addition to the primary award and in response to the number of strong candidates, the Zara Buren Memorial Foundation is proud to support four additional athletes with Grants of Distinction.”

Those recipients, who will each receive a grant of $1,000, include:

  • Georgia Leah Bunting
  • Addison Howarth
  • Alexa Maclaren
  • Trinity Sachau-Sherman

“We hope that the traits that this award recognizes will continue to grow amongst all riders, and the memories of Zara will carry on for everyone who was lucky enough to know her, and those who continue to #rideforzara,” Robert said.

Congratulations to all the 2022 grant recipients!

Boyd Martin’s Tokyo partner Tsetserleg (“Thomas”) enjoyed some kick-back-and-relax time following the Games while his rider focused on other pursuits, like winning his first five-star. But now the dream team is back in action, schooling some insultingly small cross country obstacles to knock off the dust.

Looking good!

Volunteer Nation: 2 Events & 1 Dressage Show That Need Help This Weekend

You can learn a lot from watching riders compete in different disciplines. And volunteering just makes the experience more interactive … take, for instance, this week’s “I LOVE Dressage” show at Stable View Farm in Aiken. This USEF/USDF competition, featuring divisions ranging from Training Level all the way up to FEI, still needs dressage score runners and scribes, which offer a behind-the-scenes education in how tests are scored and why. Click here for more info.

As always, you can earn merit points when you donate your time through the USEA’s Volunteer Incentive Program. Registering to volunteer through EventingVolunteers.com makes it easy and seamless to both find a job and shift as well as learn what your role will entail. Eventing Volunteers also has a free mobile app — download it today for iPhone & iPad or Android.

10 Unique Airbnbs For Your Next Lexington-Area Event

I’m a big fan of Airbnb and Vrbo. I’ve booked accommodations through these sites everywhere from Rebecca Farm to Red Hills, Luhmühlen to LRK3DE, Badminton to Boekelo. Not only can they be cheaper than a hotel (always a plus for EN, on our quest to cover every important event in the world with a budget of literally zero dollars), they often have character and help create memories in a way that cookie cutter chain hotels just can’t.

In a new series, we are combing Airbnb listings for unique places to stay in some of the most popular eventing destinations. Previous editions: OcalaAiken, Tryon, Rocca di Papa (site of the 2022 WEG). Today we head to Lexington, Kentucky.

Vintage Airstream/Downtown

If the idea of camping appeals to you — except for the part about having to set up a tent, and lack of heat/air conditioning or really any basic modern amenities whatsoever — you’re the target “glamping” demographic. This vintage 1960 Airstream is located in downtown Lexington, but feel free to close your eyes and pretend you’re out in the wilderness. It has loads of character and sits behind an 1890 Victorian House with fenced yard, fire pit and outdoor dining area.

The Dairy Dream Farm Stay

Moo-oove over, hotels! Three cozy cow-themed bedrooms await guests on this working dairy farm. This would be an especially fun stay for kids, who can experience milking cows, collecting chicken eggs, and play time with sheep and goats. Free coffee, tea and fresh farm eggs for breakfast included. A portion of your stay contributes to the program at Stack-a-Story Inc. to provide farm stays for the underserved.

ARCADIA FARM COTTAGE – Luxury Bluegrass Retreat

The word “Arcadia” is often used to describe an idyllically pastoral place, and that checks out with this three-bedroom, four-bath cottage. Located on a historic 384-acre farm, it features include Tempur-pedic mattresses fitted with luxe linens, king bedrooms, classic equestrian decor and a patio with panoramic views.

YOU DESERVE IT! DOWNTOWN LEX LUX LOFT. RUPP ARENA

“Is this our Airbnb or are we just at a cool but really empty club?” This downtown loft with a city skyline view is the perfect place to recreate the vibes of Meg Kep’s early “Creepy Dance Party” videos in a more appropriate setting. Includes HDTV with every possible subscription (Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, premium cable, Netflix, Apple TV, etc.) and some crazy lights.

Estate in The Heart of Horse Country

Looking for a luxury horse show getaway with up to a dozen of your closest barn buds? This opulent five-bedroom, five-bath estate is adjacent to a working winery and overlooks a stately horse farm. It’s the perfect place to kick back with a glass of bubbly and imagine yourself the silk-stockinged owner of a fleet of champion race horses.

Unique Stay – 1907 Log Cabin Near Kentucky River

This 1907 log cabin is a bit of a haul from the Horse Park but it’s so unique, we couldn’t leave it out. Perched on the palisades of The Kentucky River, it has king bedroom and a fun two-bed loft (ladder access, of course!) The hosts recommend dinner at the nearby Proud Marys BBQ, and if you’re luck you’ll catch some live music.

Modern & Bright Tiny House

No Airbnb highlight reel would be complete without a tiny house (or two!) This one looks like a dollhouse but actually can sleep up to four; it was built and lived in by its hosts until their family started to grow. Here’s another cute one in the area: Purple Door Tiny House.

Bourbon Hous – 7 Bdrms, Bar, Billiards, Brand New!

Why go out on the town when you can just stay in? In my experience stay-at-home bartenders mix the strongest drinks, too. This renovated historic house has seven bedrooms and seven and a half baths, making it a fun place for your whole barn crew to stay.

Enjoy Downtown Lex from your Private Deck

This breezy one-bedroom, one-bath loft makes me want to rip out every wall in my house and replace it with a garage door. Brilliant! So cute and cozy and equipped with basic kitchen amenities, all new appliances, washer/dryer and two TVs. About 20 minutes from the Horse Park.

Tuesday Video: Budweiser Super Bowl 2022 Super Bowl Commercial

The Budweiser Clydesdales are backkkkk! Budweiser’s 2022 Super Bowl spot has dropped, and once again the beer brand’s beloved mascots are taking center stage. And they’re making worse life decisions than ever, which as a fellow horse person is 10/10 relatable.

Also relatable, trying to drown your sorrows with beer because (1) not only is your horse is broken but also (2) your vet has that pitying look in her eye that says she’s about to hand you a monster invoice, which means for sure that (3) you’re never going to be able to afford a nice craft IPA again.

We’ve all been there, Mr. Hot Sad Cowboy Guy! DM me if you need to talk.

Just when it seemed all was lost, though, aforementioned critically injured Clydesdale busts out of his stall and takes off buck-farting across the frozen winter ground.

I have questions.

Since we last witnessed this horse shred a tendon not 40 seconds ago, was there a video time lapse in which Hot Sad Cowboy has been sweating, magnet-ing, shock waving and shooting stem cells into this leg followed by a tediously gradual process of physical rehab?  Have they been building up gradually for months, starting with two-minute handwalks, building up strength on an underwater treadmill, enduring the vet-prescribed slow torture of pulling a wagon loaded on day 1 with just one lonely can of Budweiser, then two, then three, etc. as not to cause re-injury? And now he is truly recovered and ready, in body and soul, to let it rip?

Or, on day two of stall rest, is this horse just doubling down on self-destruction, soon to be discovered when he pulls up three-legged lame, and Hot Sad Cowboy has to call out the vet … again.

I guess we’ll have to wait until Super Bowl 2023 to find out.
