Thrills & Spills: Cross Country Champions

I don’t know about you guys, but I grew up watching the amazing series of VHS tapes called “Thrills & Spills”. Forget Disney movies, I was watching these in my free time, and fantasizing about everything involved (ok, maybe not the falling off in the water parts). They represented everything that I thought was awesome about Eventing: the unbelievable saves, the brave and catty horses, and of course, a healthy dose of humble pie when you get tossed into the water.

Watching the “Cross Country Champions” tapes were always my favorites. I wasn’t alive during the time that these special horses were running courses, and the idea of such beasts was akin to thinking about unicorns for me, I considered them such a fantastical breed. Priceless and Ginny Leng were my all time favorites, closely followed by Ian Stark and Murphy Himself. (As a quick aside, you should watch Ian ride Murphy on the cross country, and then think about how it influenced his course designs….there’s a strong correlation!)

So on this Saturday, let us tip our hats to champions past, and if anybody has 1) the old VHS tapes and 2) the capabilities to turn them into DVDs and 3) the inclination to do so, please let me know so that I can send you a giant edible arrangement of chocolates and fruits.
