The colors of fall are out in full force at Course Brook Farm this weekend, and so are the blue and black cross country colors of beloved Area 1 eventer Jessica Halliday who passed away earlier this week after a hard-fought battle with Stage IV colon cancer. The loss of Jess has hit Area 1 hard, but Jess was such a significant part of the community that her memory will live on through the connections that she made and full life that she lived.

Go eventing, ride for Jess, and #BuckOffCancer.

Monday Video: Take Me Back to TerraNova

We loved watching The Event at TerraNova this weekend, which took place at the TerraNova Equestrian Center in Myakka City, Florida. While the EN team was sad not to be present at this inaugural event in person, we thoroughly enjoyed watching the live stream and following along from home. The countless hours of work and care that has been put into making this event a world class experience for competitors of all levels shines through via the event’s production.

We’ve complied a couple of videos produced by the TerraNova team that overlay some competition footage with leading riders discussing their rounds:

Here’s Lesley Law on his winning CCI4*-S show jumping round with Lady Chatterley:

Sara Kozumplik-Murphy on her showjumping rounds aboard Rubens D’ysieux (second place CCI4*-S) and Devil Munchkin (winner CCI3*-S):

And of course we’d be remiss not to include a little cross country action, so here’s Jennie Jarnstrom-Dennis, who led the CCI4*-S after cross country with Flower Girl and ultimate finish in 6th place:

You can rewatch all of the live-streamed action from TerraNova on their YouTube channel!

Me, diving into my regular work week after a five-star. (Actually Buck Davidson and Jak My Style though.) Photo by Abby Powell.

Turns out that the five-star hangover is WAY worse if you’ve gone to the event in person, as opposed to watching it on the livestream as I usually do. Heck, I didn’t even change timezones in my travels to the Maryland 5 Star but I still felt jet lagged on Monday and have been miserably failing to keep track of what day of the week it is. Here’s hoping I can at least get my bearings again over the next few days before we dive right into Pau coverage next week.

Let’s raise a glass to Bailey and her fiancé, who popped the question at fence 10 and she said YES. Well done, sir, and congratulations to the happy couple!

Who Jumped It Best? Maryland Crab Water Up Bank Edition

EN’s coverage of the Maryland 5 Star is brought to you by Kentucky Performance Products. KPP is our go-to for all things nutritional when it comes to supporting our horses and their healthier selves. Managing horses is a challenge, but KPP makes it simple — and they treat you like a horse owner, not just a customer. You can learn more about KPP by clicking here.

There were more than a few things that made me (and everyone, really) do a double take while walking Ian Stark‘s brand new Maryland 5 Star cross country course ahead of Saturday. There was the steep, steep Viaduct to Ditch Brush at fence 4AB, the keyhole-esque Owl Corners at 25AB, and of course the imposing crab at fence 15, that nearly broke the eventing internet ahead of cross country day. But looking past the crab (literally) something else within the Maryland Crab Water presented by MARS Sustainability Bay caught my eye: a dry, gravel-filled ditch in front of the up bank out of the water. ‘Was it supposed to make the complex more challenging?’ I asked myself, because it certainly looked extra terrifying and I didn’t recall ever seeing something like this before.

Contrarily, the dry ditch was added to help horses read the question better. Course designer Ian Stark explained to the media during a press briefing on Friday afternoon that he decided to add the dry ditch because he has observed many a horse stumble up banks out of water and thought that an added ground line might help them jump it better.

A closer look at the CDE elements of the Maryland Crab Water presented by MARS Sustainability Bay. Photo by Abby Powell.

As everyone counted down to the start of the 5* cross country on Saturday, I made my way up to the Crab Water figuring that I would shoot a few riders through the complex before working my way back towards the start/finish throughout the rest of the division. I wanted to be sure to get a few photos at what will become an iconic fence, plus I, like everyone else, was extremely curious to see how this complex would ride.

Will Coleman and DonDante were the first to reach the crab, and the crowd lining the ropes surrounding the water positively erupted with cheers and applause as they flawlessly cleared the final element. By the end of the day, it turned out at the mind-boggling fence 15ABDCE complex wasn’t as terrifying as it looked. It caused just two problems throughout the day: a single combination picked up a refusal at the crab itself, and another at the final skinny brush element on the downside of the bank. Just as Ian had anticipated, the horses read the ditch/ bank beautifully which made for beautiful rides through the complex and some epic photos, if I do say so myself.

So here you have it, citizens of Eventing Nation: who jumped the bank out of the Maryland Crab Water the best? All rode it beautifully, but just one can be the fan-favorite! Cast your vote in the poll below and Go Eventing.

Cooley Master Class, Accepted! All 5* Horses Pass Second Jog, One Spun in 3*

Oliver Townend and Cooley Master Class. Photo by Kate Samuels.

There’s a collective feeling of breath being held on the morning of the second horse inspection at a five-star event — especially after running a brand new cross country track —  but as it turned out we needn’t have worried. All 35 horses that presented to the CCI5* ground jury of Angela Tucker (GBR), Martin Plewa (GER) and Mark Weissbecker (USA) this morning were accepted and will move on to show jumping.

Of course everyone was curious to see how Cooley Master Class and Oliver Townend, who maintained their lead in the division after a double clear cross country round yesterday, would fare this morning; particularly after having sadly been spun at this point in the competition at Kentucky in April.

Andrea Baxter’s Indy 500 was the only horse to be asked to jog twice, but then was immediately accepted without being held.

Unfortunately, one horse in the three-star division did not pass inspection: Alina Patterson’s Flashback was sent to the holding box and then was not accepted upon representation. Mia Farley and Phelps were also sent to the hold box but were then accepted without without being asked to represent.

CCI3* show jumping commenced a moment ago, at 10:00 a.m. EST, and a new 2021 USEF CCI3*-L National Champion will be crowned. The exciting conclusion of the five-star division will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will cap off this inaugural Maryland 5 Star.

We hope you enjoyed your breakfast, Ian! While yesterday’s five-star cross country course caused many a sleepless night and unpleasant breakfast experiences — both for riders AND for this first-time five-star course designer — we had such an incredible day of cross country at the inaugural Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill. Ian showed that he can make a little cross country design magic happen by scaring the riders without tricking the horses. Bravo, Ian.

We’ll close the door on this first chapter of eventing’s newest five-star tomorrow. The second horse inspection will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and then the 3* show jumping begins at 10:00 a.m. EST, followed by the 5* finale at 1 p.m. EST. Keep it locked here on EN!

And if you fancy the chance to win some fabulous prizes, a couple of our Maryland 5 Star contests are still open. Don’t forget to check them out here.

We’re well into Friday already here at The Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill. It’s been a relative quiet morning, but the bustle is picking up as we creep towards the afternoon session of dressage where we’ll watch the second half of the 5* division finish out the first phase.

The top three competitors remain the same at the conclusion of dressage for the USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship, which is led by Kurt Martin and D.A. Lifetime. Daniel Clasing turned in the top ride of the day on Olney Uncle Sam, earning a 26.0 and slotting into 4th place.

The YEH jumping ring was bustling with activity this morning, as a number of spectators made the trek out to the Sawmill Field to watch the jumping portion of the 5-year-old championship. The crowd got into it too — hooting and cheering as the riders demonstrated their horses’ gallop. At the time of writing this report there are a brand new top three in podium position, with half the division still to go after lunch.

Mia Farley and Invictus, an American Warmblood gelding (Diarado — Sunset Paradise) owned and bred by Karen O’Connor are leading the pack thanks to perfect scores across the board for cross country efforts, overall jump impression, and general impression. They’re closely followed by Phillip Dutton and Lincoln’s Address, a off-the-track Thoroughbred gelding (Union Rags — Sincerely) owned by wide Evie Dutton, and then Tim Bourke and Kung Fu Quality, a Thoroughbred/Warmblood gelding (Imothep — Rose and Crown) owned by himself, wife Marley Stone Bourke, and Sharon Church. All the horses earned a perfect 10 score for their general impression. You can view the 5 Year Old scores here.

We’re headed back out to the arena for the start of the five-star dressage now! Stay tuned for much more to come, but in the meantime enjoy a gallery from my walk around this morning.

Your Thursday Lunch Break Look Around: Kurt Martin Leads CCI3*-L at Maryland

Kurt Martin and D.A. Lifetime. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

The Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill is well and truly coming alive today, as the first riders in the CCI3*-L division made fresh tracks in the dressage court first thing this foggy morning. The first 25 pairs of the 51 competitors contesting the USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship completed their dressage tests this morning and the early leaders today are Kurt Martin and D.A. Lifetime on a formidable score of  23.5.

Kurt connected with D.A. Lifetime, known around the barn as “Clarence”, on a trip to Germany a few years ago with Debbie Adams and Tony Rosati. The now nine-year-old Holsteiner mare (Lingh — Timeless by Carpalo) bred by Carsten Strehle was the last horse of the trip at Kurt sat on.

“She was like riding on the cloud. Literally, I remember the right lead and feeling I’d never written anything so light and nice,” Kurt said of the mare. After giving the mare an easy year to settle into life in the States, Kurt began building a partnership with her several years ago.

“She maybe wasn’t the most trusting to start, but we have a great rapport and she has perfect manners … she’s very easy. She loves her turnout, but she’s not always the easiest to catch because we have beautiful turnout in Virginia. She’s actually turned out with my five-star horse Delux Z and he chases her around a little bit, made her a better horse.”

“It’s just been stepping stones … Our decision coming into Fair Hill prep was that we wanted to run her at good venues. This is a good horse and we wanted to give her a real shot at some good courses. So that’s the way we’ve shown up here and all of us are really excited to have her.”

Currently sitting in second in the division on a 24.8 are Kate Brown and her own Carnaby, an 8-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Cabachon — Clingolda, by Clinton H) bred by Gestut Lewitz. Kate bought “Cabbie” as a three-year-old from Germany and has been steadily producing him up the levels since 2017.

“My horse is usually quite obedient and he felt quite responsive in the warm up ring,” said Kate. “His eyes got a little bit big when I came up into the arena itself. He took a few peeks around throughout the test, but he kept responding to me and kept showing up and doing what I was asking so I’m very pleased with him.

The arena sits in the infield of the turf track at the Fair Hill Training Center, right at the finish line. VIP chalets and grandstands line the perimeter of the field of play and giving spectators an intimate view of the action. The permanent Aintree Grandstand is offset behind the pristine turf track and offers spectators a postcard-esque view of the entire scene.

There’s no doubt that it’s an atmosphere worthy of a five-star, and we’re so thrilled to be here to take it all in. Thanks for following along!

One Spun at First Horse Inspection for Inaugural Maryland 5 Star

We’ve all waited for this moment for quite awhile and now it’s finally here. Welcome to the inaugural Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill!  With today’s first horse inspection, the competition is officially underway at North America’s first fall five-star. A grand total of 97 horses jogged this afternoon between the event’s two FEI divisions: the USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship and the marquee CCI5*.

We saw two fewer horses jog up than expected for the five-star division: would-have-been five-star first-timer Lexi Scovil and Chico’s Man VDF Z have withdrawn, and Boyd Martin did not present Long Island T. 46 combinations jogged for the CCI5* ground jury of Angela Tucker (GBR), Martin Plewa (GER) and Mark Weissbecker (USA), but only 45 will move on to dressage. Unfortunately, Sharon White‘s longtime partner Cooley On Show was held and then not accepted upon representation. Voltaire De Tre was also sent to the holding box for Leslie Law, but ultimately accepted.

All entrants in the CCI3*-L breezed through their jog. The CCI3*-L ground jury of Christian Landolt (SUI) and Gretchen Butts (USA) did not ask anyone to jog twice nor sent anyone to the hold box.

Hound & Hare has crowned three riders as the recipients of their Best Dressed Rider Award: one three-star competition and a male and female competitor each from the five-star:

It’s a quiet but busy day here at the brand new Fair Hill Special Event Zone in Elkton, Maryland. The new infrastructure looks impressive, the ground looks immaculate, and everyone is excited to start welcoming horses down the center line tomorrow. The CCI3*-L kicks off the competition tomorrow at 8:00 AM and then the five-star begins in earnest at 1:00 PM. Dressage for both divisions will be split over two days. A USEA Young Event Horse East Coast Four-Year-Old Champion will also be crowned tomorrow and the five-year-olds will also perform their dressage tests.

Stick with EN for your Maryland 5 Star coverage this week — there’s so much more to come. Make sure you dig into the Official Maryland 5 Star Digital Program + Form Guide, as well, which we are honored to bring you in partnership with the Maryland 5 Star.

Monday Video: Overseas Horses Touch Down in Maryland

They’re heeeeere!

The eagles have landed. Or in other words, the international horses have arrived at Fair Hill for the inaugural Maryland 5 Star this week. We’re incredibly excited to welcome such a classy overseas contingent of competitors to North America’s very first fall five star.

Thanks to some super Event Partners The Dutta Corp., who organized round-trip flights with discounted bookings from Liège Airport in Belgium and and arrival into JFK International Airport for quarantine requirements at The ARK, and Brook Ledge Horse Transportation, who provided complimentary ground transportation from The ARK to Fair Hill, our overseas equines arrived safely and in style.

Watch them take their first steps on Maryland soil as they are unloaded one by one. Will we have an American five-star winner here in Maryland this week? Or will one of these horses and their rider take the title?

Let’s have a look at some of the travels that have begun in earnest ahead of the action this week. We’ll see you in Maryland!

Something historic happened two weeks ago! 🤩

On 18th September, William Coleman became the first US rider ever to win the SAP-Cup at the CHIO Aachen! 🇺🇸

Let's enjoy this special moment together once again!

Posted by CHIO Aachen on Saturday, October 2, 2021

Will Coleman came home a big winner from CHIO Aachen, taking home top honors in the CCIO4*-S with Off The Record, the 12-year-old syndicate-owned Irish Sport Horse known around the barn as “Timmy”. Will’s win was an enormous personal victory, having come oh so close to topping the podium at a number of international events in the past; and it’s also a huge achievement for US Eventing, as Will is not the first American to win Aachen. It was an all-around good weekend for Team USA — including Will, Tamie Smith, Ariel Grald, and Sydney Elliot — who finished second overall in the team competition, just a fraction behind Great Britain.

This video gives us a peek at their victorious cross country round and an inside look at Will’s immediate reaction to winning the whole shebang. Congratulations again, Will!

You may have noticed an influx of tasseled boots on the job strip at big events. I know that everyone watching the livestream of the horse inspections at Kentucky did — they were the talk of the Facebook live chats! The brand behind these eye-catching boots that have taken over jog strips around the world is Fairfaix & Favor and we are delighted to welcome them aboard in sponsoring our Sunday Links posts.

Yes, Fairfax & Favor’s tall country lifestyle boots are iconic, but make sure you check out their entire catalog as there’s a little something for everyone including both women’s and men’s footwear, plus handbags, belts, other accessories and apparel. They have a brand new Emerald Collection and I absolutely cannot get over how gorgeous it all is.

Monday Video: Go for a Wild Ride in the Aachen Jump and Drive

I’m truly obsessed with the Jump and Drive: a special class that combines eventing, show jumping and combined driving in a relay race type competition which sees the event riders jump a showcase style cross country course before hoping on the back of their teammates carriage and going for a wild ride. Of course we only get to see this class at special, big events where all of these disciplines converge, but it’s great fun when that happens!

The Jump and Drive at Aachen is always an extra enjoyable time thanks to the pumping party music and roaring crowds. This year a combined team of Australian and American athletes took home the top honors. U.S. show jumper Lillie Keenan was partnered with Australians Boyd Exell, a superstar in combined driving, and Tokyo 2020 individual eventing bronze medalist Andrew Hoy, who rode Odaria Finemore’s Bloom des Hauts Crets. Andrew wore his trusty helmet cam during his round, so lucky us — we get a competitor’s perspective from this unique class!

Weekend Winners: Stable View, Twin Rivers, ESDCTA, UNH

Raise your hand if you went to a show this weekend! I’m pretty stoked, because I finally did after a couple years off and it felt fabulous! Granted I just did a schooling dressage test, but nevertheless I got back out there. Whether your name is on this list or not this week or whether you went to a schooling show or a recognized event, you’re a winner in my book as long as you went out and went eventing.

Our Unofficial Lowest Score Award this weekend goes to Boyd Martin and Long Island T in the Open Preliminary B division at ESDCTA, throwing down an impressive finishing score of 15.9. That should be a lovely confidence building weekend for this pair, who looks to have rerouted after some trouble on cross country in their most recent outings.

I want to also give a shoutout to our second unofficial lowest score this week, since it’s not often we get two sub-20s in one weekend! Congrats to Veronica Ucko and Mainely Brews for winning the Novice Rider A division, also at ESDCTA, with a 17.4.

Where did the summer go?! We’re just starting to get a hint of changing leaves up here in Massachusetts and pretty soon there will be no sun left for after work hacks. That’s one way to tell that fall is here. Another is to just take a glance at the busy eventing calendar — we’re in the thick of it now and the big fall finale event will be upon us in no time.
