It’s been at least a decade since I taught a riding lesson and only then did I ever teach up-down lessons to super litte kids, but yesterday I did my best to give my friend, a former saddle seat rider, a lesson in basic dressage on my pony who she is half-leasing. I discovered two things: 1) It turns out I can really ramble on about dressage even when I can only ride it at a largely rudimentary level myself and, 2) Teaching dressage is hard, which really I already knew, but this just reenforced. Once again, I have to give mad props to all the instructors and trainers out there!

Monday Video: What’s New for Elisa Wallace

2020 didn’t turn out the way anyone thought it would, but despite the hardships faced and the lack of competition many eventers made the best of their stay-at-home situations for the majority of the year. Among those eventers who turned some lemons into lemonade was five-star eventer Elisa Wallace.

For Elisa’s 2020 saw the purchase of a new farm in Ocala, Florida and, since the COVID-19 pandemic meant that much for time was spent at home this year, lots of work that went into said new property. With a dearth of major competitions lots of time was also spent building connections with some of her newer horses and a few of her mustangs were even able to complete their first events.

Here’s an update straight from Elisa about her horses and her hopes for 2021! You can also look forward to new content from Elisa coming out on Wednesdays (think, “Wallace Wednesdays!”) on her YouTube channel this year.

Who doesn’t need a little laugh this afternoon? British five-star eventer Laura Collett had some pretty spicy horses when she legged her string back up and schooled them over fences for the first time after their winter break. Which of Laura’s three mounts — London 52, Cleomina and Dacapo — displayed the most impressive acrobatics? Leave your comment below! Honestly though, the real winner of this contest is Laura’s incredible seat!

Monday Video: Who Wants to be an Equestrian-naire?

Just in time for a little end-of-year fun, the FEI gives us this ultimate equestrian sport quiz Who Wants to be an Equestrian-naire? a riff on the classic game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? now with 100% more horse questions, but sadly 100% less actual money to be won. Your prize instead will be bragging rights across all FEI disciplines if you’re able to score well!

If you have a little downtime during this funny still-2020-but-almost-2021 week, or maybe you’re having a virtual New Year’s party amongst horsey folk (this quiz would be a perfect game to play via Zoom!) download the scoresheet here and test your equestrian mettle. Let us know how you do! (Once you’re done, you can find the answers here.)

EN’s Top 10 Videos of 2020, #3: Watch Tamie Smith’s Record-Breaking Dressage Test

We are counting down the top 10 most-viewed videos shared on EN in 2020. To view videos 4-10, click here.

It’s no secret that Tamie Smith and Mai Baum can d-a-n-c-e DANCE. Tamie and 14-year-old German Sport Horse gelding owned by Alex and Ellen Ahearn and Eric Markell, have been topping first phase leaderboards for a while now — perhaps most notably doing so on their way to winning the Fair Hill CCI4*-L (then CCI3*) in 2015 and then making a splash in their Team USA debut at the 2019 Pan Ams — and it was no different in the Advanced division at Rebecca Farm this year. “Lexus” and Tamie led wire-to-wire to pick up the win, adding just a few cross country time penalties onto their stellar dressage score of 17.7.

If a 17.7 at the Advanced level sounds really low and impressive to you that’s because yes, it is! In fact the USEA confirmed that it’s the lowest dressage score at the Advanced level since 2006, besting Darren Chiacchia and Windfall II’s 17.9 scored at the Richland Park Horse Trials in August 2008.

And what does a 17.7 scoring Advanced test look like? Watch and learn courtesy of Ride On Video!
