Morgan babies are their own special kind of cute. Photo from Leslie Arnold's Facebook page Morgan babies are their own special kind of cute. Photo from Leslie Arnold's Facebook page

It’s foal season and I have to admit, it’s starting to get to me. Much of my Facebook feed is filled with cute foals. Some are just minutes old, still covered in goop. Others are venturing out for their first days in grassy paddocks. All of them are painfully cute. I can’t wait to scratch baby butts and watch shy faces peek out from behind mares who are very grateful to no longer be carrying such a load.

Confession time, EN. I love awards dinners. I love awards plaques. Even though I’m perfectly happy buzzing around the Beginner Novice and Novice tracks for the rest of forever, the amount of effort that goes in to the awards at the upper and FEI levels is sometimes enticing.   Pair that with getting fancied up for the jogs and the distinct possibility of being done in TWO days and I find myself daydreaming. Of course, I quickly get to the part of the daydream where I realize exactly how much WORK it would take and I run out of steam. Those of you that have chosen to take it to the upper levels, I salute you. Keep on being the hard working awesome people that you are. I’m gonna keep on slacking, but just remember – that means I’ll probably have time to grab you a bottle of water or hit the concession stand for you.

Redefining Redefining "busy." Photo from Tamie Smith's Facebook page

One of the expressions that used to make me laugh as a kid is “busier than a one-legged man at an ass-kicking contest.” I’d have to say Team Next Level Eventing is giving that one-legged man a run for his money when it comes to being busy. I’m exhausted just thinking about the logistics of making all of those rides happen.

I mean, they’re at Galway Downs — when will Tamie Smith and Heather Morris have time to go to the FOOD TRUCKS?! I know that even managing two horses at a show dramatically increases my caffeine intake. With that many, I’d probably drink enough coffee and soda to stop my heart.

Happy Easter, EN! I’m looking forward to heading out to the barn today and spoiling my pony and myself rotten with Easter candy. The majority of Team DF has been spending the weekend at Twin Rivers doing some prep before next weekend’s event at Galway Downs, so I’ll likely have the whole barn to myself. It sounds like a perfect day to grab a sandwich from the fancy grocery store along with a bag of carrots, some Peeps and jelly beans. I might even have to put on some sunscreen.

Happy Easter Weekend, EN! I must admit, I am looking forward to Monday for the awesomeness that is half-priced Cadbury Creme Eggs. As if that wasn’t enough, Rolex is right around the corner. Last year saw the start of a new tradition at Rolex, the MSEDA Party at the Park, presented by Park Equine Hospital. This year the event will take place Friday, April 29th, approximately 45 minutes after the final dressage ride of Rolex. The funds raised by the event will be used by MSEDA to help contribute toward worthy charitable projects such as improvements made to the Kentucky Horse Park by the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation. Previously, MSEDA supported the new dressage complex at the Kentucky Horse Park, contributing toward a laser level for the maintenance of the rings and improvements ot the barns. Online registration is available now! [More information here]

Rain. Lots and lots of rain. I’m sure you guys on the East Coast are like “Erin, this is no big deal. Water falls from the sky sometimes”, but I can’t begin to stress how apocalyptic this rain has been over the past four days. Yes, we’ve had a few breaks here and there. In fact, yesterday, there was a long enough storm break go for a quick hack before the deluge returned. My windshield wipers finally gave up and started peeling due to how hard they’ve been used recently. On top of that we lost an hour last night. Did you remember to change your clocks? Ugh. Worst. Day. Ever. Fortunately there’s only two more days of the wet stuff and then we’re back to mid-70s. But there’s no getting that hour back until Fall.

One of the things I really like about our sport is that hard work pays off. If you put in the time and make intelligent decisions, you will reap the rewards. Success tends to come in the form of steady progress and it is so very nice to see. A huge congratulations is in order for one of my favorite West Coasters – Megan Traynham. The hard work she’s put in between NAJYRCs and now is quite apparent as she stepped up to the challenge of Intermediate this weekend at Twin Rivers. It isn’t easy to be a junior and step in to the ring at that level. Add in the fact that you’re going toe to toe with some of the best in the sport and it is an incredible amount of pressure. Hooray Megan!

100% Truth 100% Truth

Sometimes all you need is a weekend at the barn to recharge. Even when it’s a horse-show weekend, there is still a regenerative quality that I can only find out at the barn. Maybe it’s the company of my friends, both two and four legged, who always “get me” that make the barn such a restorative place. Maybe it’s the fresh air and  adventures that make it a place I need to be. Regardless of what it is, I appreciate it. The barn makes Mondays bearable. Thankfully, today is only Sunday. Better go charge my batteries so I can do battle with the week ahead.

What I miss most about being able to be a barn-rat is that I was always busy and never had time to eat. Easiest way to stay fit ever! What I miss most about being able to be a barn-rat is that I was always busy and never had time to eat. Easiest way to stay fit ever!

I promised myself I’d get back to my gym routine on March 1st. I had a great plan. I’d go ahead and start putting in the miles on the treadmill and make sure to ride every day after work now that sunset happens around 6pm. The riding will be the easy part. It’s nice to have somewhere to go turn off my brain after a long day at the office. However, with March 1st right around the corner, I’ve been eyeballing my running shoes questioning if I will actually go ahead and lace them up in the near future. There’s a quiet dread about restarting the gym routine and I find myself wishing I could just go back to being a 15 year old barn-rat. What sorcery made it possible for me to goof about at the barn all day as a teenager, eat like garbage, and still stay fit? I guess I best make my own magic. I’m just glad it’s a leap-year. One extra day until I have to get myself fired up and hit the gym.

The early season events are some of my favorite. After the winter yuckiness, everyone comes back bright eyed and ready to make it a great season. New pairs make their debuts, and everyone gets to whip out all of the shiny new things they picked up at the holidays. I am especially fond of seeing what a winter has done for some of the green horses that got their first outings at the end of the season last year. It’s amazing what you can do in one dedicated winter, assuming you aren’t under 10 feet of snow or knee deep in mud!

Happy Valentines Day, EN! It has been a gorgeous week here in Northern California. The weather has been in the low 70s and it’s almost been enough to make you forget that we’re supposed to get absolutely pummeled with storms this winter. It’s been so warm that I’ve been able to leave my pony naked at night. Yes, you read that right – naked, at night, in February! As much as I enjoy these days, it still frightens me that we’re not getting the rain they said we would. I am very seriously expecting some of our events and schooling shows to start adding a “water truck fee” of some sorts, just because it takes a huge amount of water to keep the tracks rideable. For now though, I’m going to enjoy the pretty day.

One of the big challenges for someone involved in any sort of sporting endeavor is choosing the right coach. On top of having the required knowledge, the teaching style of the coach has to mesh well with your learning style. Also, a good coach absolutely should be able to walk the walk. The USEF Eventing Team’s Show Jumping Coach Silvio Mazzoni is doing just that. Yesterday, Mazzoni competed at Training in the Ocala HT today putting down an impressive 24.3 in Dressage. Even better, the score was obtained on a Show Jumper. The score was good enough to put Silvio in to a close 4th, in very good company. Go Silvio!

What a weekend – and it’s only Sunday! It’s funny how fast the show season and mud season both just sort of sneak up on you. A solid number of my friends are off at Galway Downs for the season opener. Those of us that stayed home are planning to tinker around at a local jumper show tomorrow. It honestly feels like New Years Day was just last week and now we’re fast approaching Valentine’s Day. Speaking of which, do you think I can convince my husband that new muck boots are actually a romantic gift? There’s nothing that says I love you like ensuring warm, dry feet at the barn.

One of the things I love about horse-stuff is how much of it we can get logo-ed, monogrammed or otherwise personalized. West Coast wonder-woman Liz Hall recently had a birthday and received this totally swanky boot-scraper from Taress Hsu. Not going to lie. I’m totally jealous. There’s something very satisfying about pretty and practical items. With how much mud we’re getting buried in out west, I’d almost be hesitant to put such a nice boot-scraper out for use. Cheers Liz!

Phase 1 of the Phase 1 of the "Getting Your Pony Tuff Mudder 2016"

I’ve certainly missed the rain, but I haven’t missed the mud. Last winter, the West Coast was dry as a bone. I got complacent and completely forgot the arduous slog it can be out to the back pasture to retrieve my pony. This is the time of year that I realize how lucky I am to have a pony who meets me at the gate. While the hike out to the pastures is often a mini-Tuff-Mudder challenge, we all know how pasture-gate areas get after even the tiniest bit of rain. Having a pony who meets me at the gate is worth every dollar I have ever spent on horse cookies.  It prevents me from having to cross the treacherous muddy section of the pasture that sucked my boots off three winters ago. I still shiver when I remember the feeling of boot-socks sinking in to pasture glop.

I have to admit, my favorite thing about this time of year are all of the awards banquets.  There’s something very special about coming together to celebrate the accomplishments of the season gone by. Seeing everyone all dolled up is especially fun and the inspiration for the upcoming season that these year end awards provide is second to none. Time to kick it in to high gear for the 2016 season, if only so we can drink wine in the elevator on the way back from the awards banquets next year!

Despite the weather’s best effort to keep us all home bound this weekend, it’s still a good time to get out and have some fun. I’ve been grinding through a bit of the winter blues and even though it will be wet and cold, I know time with my pony will make me feel better. Something else that makes these grey days a little brighter are the reports that we are getting from various places about how MASSIVE the early season entry lists are. I took a quick glance at some of the early season events for the West Coast and found that there are 21 entries in the upcoming Intermediate at Galway Downs. Also, a little bird told us that Rocking Horse Winter I HT has 577 entered and a robust wait list!  We haven’t even finished January yet and we are seeing impressive entry numbers all over the place. Maybe these days aren’t so grey after all!

What a fantastic weekend in Lexington for the USEF Annual Meeting!  Last night the Horse of the Year Awards dinner took place and a few Eventers were honored as part of the Silver Stirrup Awards. Eric Smith’s Winchexter and Carina HGF took home the National Champion ribbon for the Beginner Novice division and Novice division respectively. Chelsea Kolman’s Dauntless Courage took home the National Champion ribbon for the Preliminary division. Stephanie, Chinch and I have had far too much fun this weekend and now it is time to sleep in before we head back to California. Later this week, expect to see some information about the USEF’s Town Hall on Coaching. It sounds like some very exciting stuff is in the works, especially if you are in to continuing education!

Getting a little wild at the USEF Pegasus Awards. Getting a little wild at the USEF Pegasus Awards.

We’re having a bit too much fun at the USEF Convention. Last night was the Pegasus Awards dinner, where much wine was consumed at the media table and many awards were handed out to fabulous equestrians from a variety of disciplines. The highlight of the night was the honoring of Lana DuPont Wright with the 2015 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the trailblazer for every woman in eventing, being the first woman to compete at the Olympics on an eventing team. She has continued to be a major force in eventing by her efforts at Fair Hill International.
