Chinch’s Great Adventure at the USEF Convention

Checking in at registration Checking in at registration

Chinch, Stephanie and I are in Lexington this weekend for the USEF Convention. After a late flight in to Lexington, we picked up our badges this morning.

After breakfast, Chinch and I attended the Board of Directors meeting. Derek di Grazia and Michael Pollard were both in attendance due to their roles on the board.

The early portion of the Board of Directors meeting was focused on the financial activities of the USEF and the Treasurer’s report. The big take away from the Board of Directors meeting was that despite the collective wisdom of horses being nothing but money pits, the USEF is doing well financially.

One other highlight from the Board of Directors meeting was a discussion surrounding cyber security. The board is well aware of the need to protect the member data. Currently, USEF seems to be doing a solid job of this.

The big attraction for today is the town hall meeting on coaching, which begins at 1 p.m. EST. The USEF is looking to develop an effective coaching system across all disciplines at all levels. This would be a system that recognizes coaching as a professional career, establishes certification, a development process and support for coaches.

The USEF also recognizes a need for certified coaches to meet a “standard of expectation” across the board. This effort is not about regulation, but instead establishing certification that recognizes coaches that demonstrate sufficient skills and an appropriate knowledge base to draw from. The concepts as they are currently outlined are quite interesting and should bring about some robust discussion during the town hall meeting. We’ll have more on that later.

Tonight features the Pegasus Awards. The Pegasus Reception starts at 6:30 p.m. EST, followed by the awards dinner at 7:30 p.m. Tonight, Helena “Lana” DuPont Wright will be among the honorees, receiving the USEF Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to winning a medal at the Pairs World Driving Championships, she was the first woman ever to compete on an Olympic eventing team. Excuse me while I have a total fan girl moment.

If you’re in town for the convention, be sure to come by and say hello!

So, I didn’t win the lotto. I suspect you didn’t either. No time to be sad about that though because show season is here! Things are getting rolling in Ocala with the first show of the season and the High Performance Training Sessions hitting the West Coast next weekend. In the blink of an eye we’ll be back at Daylight Saving Time and all of that glorious evening light. Time to start focusing on those goals for 2016.

It seems like everyone I’ve been talking to has lotto fever. 800 million dollars is nothing to sneeze at and the total amount could be even higher by the time they draw the numbers. I’ve been idly pondering exactly what I would buy with that kind of cash, and it’s safe to say that the first thing on my list is a few horse properties and more ponies. Maybe I’m insane, but with that sort of money one could easily resurrect the olden days of USET at Gladstone. Oh, the possibilities!

Hello! We’re up … for now. Linode’s network engineers have been working for more then 48 straight hours to restore connectivity due to continuous DDoS attacks on its servers, and EN is still experiencing long periods of downtime as a result. Once again, we really appreciate your patience and hope to have full connectivity on EN restored soon.

In just under two weeks time I’ll be heading to Kentucky for the USEF Convention along with Stephanie and Chinch. We’ll be there to attend the Pegasus and Horse of the Year awards dinners. Come say hi if you’re there! As such, I was checking out the weather forecast for Lexington to get an idea on what I might need to pack. I found myself shivering when I noticed that the high was listed as 32 degrees for the weekend. We’re still riding in long sleeve T-shirts out here in California, so shopping I shall go.

I also plan on buying a baseball bat to kneecap whoever is DDoS’ing EN’s server company. Happy Sunday, EN!

My office job has been very cool lately. We had a nice office-lunch just before they let us all out for several days off. It’s just now starting to sink in that I don’t have to go to the office tomorrow. It’s quite nice, but I found myself laying awake late in to the night trying to make a list of all the things I should get done on my vacation. Things that made the list were those tasks that eat so much time like ‘deep clean the house’, ‘clean up the yard’ and ‘get an oil change’. Laying in bed, I promised myself I’d do at least one of those things before I have to go back to the office next week. This morning, I rolled out of bed and gave some serious consideration to all of the tasks on my list. I decided the only one that mattered was ‘go to the barn’. I have a feeling it will be the same tomorrow and until I go back to the office next week. And I’m okay with that.

Happy Boxing day EN! Hopefully today will be a day full of fun before we have to get back to the regular grind – a day for trail rides and trying out all of the new loot you received. If you didn’t get gear, perhaps a day of spending those gift cards instead. My personal rule when it comes to gift cards is that I am not allowed to get anything responsible with them. Regular purchases like tail-spray, hoof polish, fly masks or mane pulling combs are strictly off limits. Instead, I use gift cards to splurge on those things that I REALLY wanth. These splurge items are things like a new T4 Helmet, or a Tipperary cross country vest in custom colors. Today is the perfect day to splurge a little. In honor of that spirit, I’m going to stop and grab a white chocolate mocha on the way to the barn this morning. I’ll even get it breve. #treatyoself.

It’s the time of year where everyone is at their most charitable. A lot of wonderful people have come together to help the affected horses out. Guardian donated 180 bags of shavings to Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue and Central Virginia Horse rescue, two of the rescues helping out with this horrible situation. The donation was made behalf of Kelly Gage and Fox-Pitt Eventing. A special thanks goes out to Jenna Calcaterra of LoMa Farm for her coordination efforts.

At some point I'm sure I will... At some point I'm sure I will...

I was at the grocery store today grabbing a sandwich as a late-breakfast-early-lunch-I-ride-horses-so-I-really-don’t-observe-traditional-meal-times-meal when the cashier asked me ‘Are you ready for the holidays?’. I didn’t just laugh, I guffawed. I’ve seriously been so bad about my holiday shopping this year. I DID manage to get my EN Secret Santa stuff in the mail on time, but otherwise I’ve done ZERO shopping. It’s supposed to rain this weekend, so I might try and accomplish some shopping, but what will inevitably happen is that I will go to the mall, get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people and decide that paying for last-minute shipping is totally worth it. It would be so much easier if everyone I had to buy presents for rode. Maybe I’ll get them ponies.

It was very easy for parents and Academy students alike to find instructors at the Jinglebell Show. Photo from Dragonfire Farm's Facebook page It was very easy for parents and Academy students alike to find instructors at the Jinglebell Show. Photo from Dragonfire Farm's Facebook page

Yesterday was Dragonfire Farm’s annual Jinglebell Show. It is a chance for the Academy students to get some exposure to showing in an extremely low-pressure environment. Even though it’s a bit hectic with what feels like an army of parents, siblings and relatives in tow for each of the kids, it’s one of my favorite days.

Due to my schedule, I don’t get to see the lesson-program kids ride all that often. Most of them are well on their way home when I’m leaving the office and heading for the barn. At the Jinglebell Show I get to see what progress they’ve made in a year. Add in the fact that everyone from the barn chips in to make it a great experience for all involved and you can’t imagine a better day.

I must confess. I was getting really sick of all of the Elf on a Shelf photos I’d been seeing on my Facebook feed until this one finally made me laugh. Honestly, I find the whole Elf on a Shelf thing a bit creepy. And by “a bit creepy,” I mean utterly creepy.

The paranoid whackadoodle in me thinks that it’s kind of teaching kids to accept constant surveillance and that such a thing is normal. I will admit I have seen it shut down some impressive tantrums post haste. However, if we’re looking to inspire behavior through fear of a mystical someone watching, I’d rather stick to a true holiday classic — Krampus, or maybe a chestnut mare.

Nothing like barn friends helping you celebrate a birthday. Photo from Barnacle Eventing on Facebook Nothing like barn friends helping you celebrate a birthday. Photo from Barnacle Eventing on Facebook

One of my cousins’ birthdays is in late December and as such, I think it’s always made me extra sensitive to those folks who have birthdays in December – especially the later half. When I was young, we’d always have a family get together around Christmas and during part those few days in Southern California, we’d have a birthday celebration for my cousin. I remember thinking how it could be somewhat frustrating to have your birthday eclipsed by Christmas and to have birthday presents show up wrapped in Christmas paper. I also found myself pondering on what it would be like to never ever have a summer-time pool-side birthday party. My cousin was always a good sport about it, but I’ve had other friends who were December-babies that found it much more frustrating. All of that said, if you’ve got a barn-buddy with a December birthday, throw some BIRTHDAY cheer their way like the folks at Barnacle Eventing did for their fearless leader!

Last Sunday, my husband asked me what I wanted for the holidays this year. I did my best to look thoughtful and not blurt out the most expensive item on my wish list right away. Instead, I managed to play it cool and say “I haven’t put much thought to it, really. What about you? Have your eye on anything in particular?” He waffled a bit before naming off a few relatively mundane items – a new beard trimmer, one of those sausage/cracker/cheese gift baskets, socks – and then he went for the big ticket item: a new set of drums. I let my eyebrows drift upward and nodded, telling him I’d see what I could do. Guess I can put those new tall boots on my list after all!

The forecast says 27 degrees tonight. Time to bust out the caterpillar suit! The forecast says 27 degrees tonight. Time to bust out the caterpillar suit!

I know, I know, 27 degrees isn’t THAT cold to most of you out there, but for those of us in Northern California it is positively arctic. In my part of California, it is rare that it dips down beyond the low 40s at night. We don’t have to deal with snow, driving rain or biting wind, so for the majority of the winter a body clipped horse in good weight can rock a mid-weight blanket and be just fine, even if they live out. With the cold creeping in though, I had cause to whip out the “three nights a year” neck-rug. Blanket shopping is one of those things that I have a love-hate relationship with. I’m still in the love phase as I have hope I’ll find something that doesn’t rub my mare. The hate for it comes in around late January when I realize exactly how much I’ve spent on blankets this season and still can’t find a blanket that doesn’t rub her shoulders!

I must admit, I partied way too hard on Thanksgiving this year. My husband and I had some friends over and despite spending all day in the kitchen and none of my time at the barn, we had a lovely time. Which really means we spent the evening doing our best to ensure that we would be far too hungover come Friday morning to even consider doing any Black Friday shopping. It looks like it’s almost safe to go back outside. Today, after a morning ride I’ll be making an attempt to navigate the chaos of Black Friday Weekend sales with my one required stop: my local tack store.

This week I busted out my barn jacket for the first time this season. I also wore a hoodie to the office as well as some fleece lined riding tights. (No, seriously. It’s a very casual office, and when paired with a big hoodie they can pass for yoga pants. I’m fashion forward.) Best of all, there was frost on my windshield the other morning and I liked it. The first frost is a thing of wonder and beauty due to the death it brings. Good bye flies. There may be a few stragglers yet as we haven’t officially hit freezing in the Sacramento Valley, but I think I may have sprayed my last few blasts of fly spray for the season. This is one of the simple pleasures that comes with the colder weather. Yes, fly spray is a great smell, but an even better smell is anything you smell without flies buzzing at your nose.

I once asked a friend of mine why she’d stopped competing. She told me that it was only in part due to costs and work, and that the majority of it was due to the fact that she’d taken up fox hunting. Every year I tell myself I’ll go on a few hunts in the off-season, but never quite get around to it. Those that I know have all said some variety of “It’s like cross country day, just with everyone going at the same time, a few course holds and significantly more drinking.” All of these things sound like good things, so I’m not quire sure what’s stopping me.

Seriously. Crockpots are essential winter survival gear for equestrians. Do you really want to have to try and COOK after getting home from the barn? Seriously. Crockpots are essential winter survival gear for equestrians. Do you really want to have to try and COOK after getting home from the barn?

It is cold and black out. It hasn’t rained a ton yet, so the ground hasn’t gone to mud just yet but soon it will. Evenings are spent wondering if those reflective eyes were a the barn cat or a raccoon. (Don’t kid yourself – it is always a raccoon, the barn cat stays in the office where it’s warm.) Jackets and flashlights are now a must, as are thicker socks. My other major winter must-have was put in to use for the first time yesterday – my crock pot. Fifteen minutes in the morning to load it up means a hot dinner once I’ve made it home from the barn – or at least it should. Tomorrow, I have to remember to plug it in too.

Halloween Hangover Sunday Links from One K Helmets

What a Halloween. A Breeder’s Cup Classic win out of American Pharoah, an extra hour to sleep in today and the traditional 50% off Candy sales start today. All of these great things are almost enough to distract me from the fact that the end of Daylight Saving Time has arrived and that sunset will be arriving at 5pm tonight. Yes, the season of crockpots and quartersheets is upon us. Now if only the weather in my area would match the calendar! (Please remind me I said this if you hear me grumbling about the cold come January.)

Gorgeous! Gorgeous!

Halloween is here! Halloween is, hands down, my favorite holiday. I still love playing dress up and find myself coming up with elaborate plans for fantastic costumes all year long. Horse costumes are highly entertaining and bring out the kid in all of us. Candy is usually a sufficient treat on Halloween, but this year we get the added bonus of seeing American Pharoah make his last run in the Breeder’s Cup Classic. The finest treat of all will be seeing him across the wire safe and sound, ready to go to the breeding shed where he will hopefully pass on that stellar temperament to the OTTBs we will be picking up in a few years time. Happy Halloween!

The one thing that makes The Dark Time tolerable. Quartersheets. LOVE! The one thing that makes The Dark Time tolerable. Quartersheets. LOVE!

We’re entering the final week before what I like to call The Dark Time. Daylight Saving Time ends in just seven days. The extra hour of sleep is nice, but I am really going to miss the few lingering bits of light in the evening. With The Dark Time coming, it is also time to decide if I’m going to do the whole No-Stirrup November routine as well. In years past No-Stirrup November has turned in to “an excuse to screw around and ride bareback for a month and not really accomplish anything” and I suspect that it is likely to do do the same thing this year. It’s been a challenge to make it to the barn after work for the past few months, so I’ve mostly been a weekend warrior. And by that, I mean I’ve been doing a whole lot of “screwing around and not accomplishing anything”. However, now I can screw around and not accomplish anything in a quarter sheet. That makes it different, right?
