Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: The Eventer’s Field of Dreams

Kristina Whorton and her 6-year-old Holsteiner, Finnegan, ran their first Training level event at Catalpa Corner Charity Horse Trial in Iowa City last weekend, finishing on their dressage score to place third. Way to go! They take us along for the ride as they jump each fence beautifully out of stride as they gallop along the edge of corn fields and down serene tree lined paths. Our hearts melt a little every time Kristina croons, “Good boy, Finn! I love you!”

Held at the Catalpa Corner Horse Park, the event was founded by Dr. Jim McNutt and Susan Brigham in 2007 in memory of Dr. Tom Brigham and Susan’s son, Madison Brigham, who was killed in a car accident. The event, now organized by Ali Hayford, grows every year — there were over 160 entries in 2018 — and shows off the best of the area culture with Iowa-themed cross country jumps nestled between the soybean and corn fields. Catalpa Corner is a much-loved annual destination event with a special personality. But don’t take our word for it. Announcer-extraordinaire Brian O’Connor had this to say:

“This is what I call an ‘old school’ event — dressage and cross country on Saturday, evening dinner and social, and then stadium on Sunday. We used to do this a lot back in the day but now with so many events doing the one-day format, we lose this kind of competition. The hospitality was awesome and the crew and volunteers were wonderful and did a great job. Greg Schlappi provided solid courses that rode very well. A water crossing in the warm up — who has one of those? The show jumping course is all decorated out in Harry Potter style. The jumps rival those at Kentucky for the 4* (they do the Kentucky horse farms if you remember). So many great new and old friends … Fun, fun, fun in the cornfields of Iowa. Just goes to prove (again) that movie line … IF YOU BUILD IT … THEY WILL COME!”

Millbrook Social Media Roundup: Rain Check

The weather has been less than cooperative at Millbrook Horse Trials. While rain is not uncommon during this event, the conditions this year have been especially difficult, leading to multiple schedule changes including postponing upper level cross country to tomorrow. Situations like this are never easy for organizers and officials and decisions are made always with the best interest of the competitors in mind. Here’s hoping things clear up and the remainder of the event goes off without a hitch.

We’ve followed Irish eventer Hilda Donahue’s foray into the endurance world for the last few years and we are so proud that this past weekend she completed one of the toughest endurance races in the world — the Tevis Cup. Riding Reynolds Racing’s Danzig and Rictik, Hilda and her husband Ken struck out for an adventure in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Ken and Danzig called it a day at 28 miles, but Hilda and Rictik forged ahead, climbing 17,000 feet and descending 22,000 in extreme conditions for a total of 100 miles.

Hilda wrote on her Facebook page: “Rictik was a superstar negotiating the many technical challenges on the trail. She climbed the rough mountain trails, marched enthusiastically down into the rocky, hot canyons, crossed the swinging bridge and the American River in the pitch dark. With the help of Reynolds Racing’s excellent crew led by Lynn Sparks Kenelly, and my awesome sis-in-laws (Sharon Finston & Karon Dutcher) & of course Kelli (Philpot Langton), Rictik crossed the finish line sound, happy & looking quite fresh.”

Hilda is now qualified for the World Equestrian Games on two incredible horses including her own Al – Marah Speed, who doubles as an eventer! Well done, Hilda! Go you!

Heather Reynolds and Cayucos were the winners of the 2018 Tevis Cup, coming in 18 minutes ahead of second and third place finishers Gabriela and Wasch Blakeley. The Haggin Cup, awarded to the best conditioned horse, was awarded to a mustang named MM Cody, and a 27-year-old horse called PL Mercury finished 13th! [Tevis In the Books]

Lisa Takada and Wishbone represented Area VI at the 2018 FEI/Adequan North American Youth Championships at Rebecca Farm and were part of the bronze medal winning CICO2* team in Lisa’s last year of eligibility. The UK just can’t catch a break this year. After many cancelled events due to rain in the spring, very hard ground has lowered entries this summer and organizers continue to make tough choices. Boyd and Silva Martin’s second son, Leo, is one week and one day old today. It’s been a tough introduction to the world for the little guy but we’re glad to hear he’s making progress. Silva is also recovering well from the c-section, though it can be difficult for active equestrians to slow down and take it easy (don’t we know it). Read more of Silva’s latest update here.

There’s a new event on the UK calendar: the London Capital and Finance Plc Osborne Horse Trials. This mid-week event took place on July 25-26 on the historic grounds of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, UK. The royal residence of Queen Victoria and already a popular visitor attraction for the island, the Osborne House made for a stunning backdrop for the event (indeed, castles and historic homes are a standard feature of UK horse trials).

Australian Olympian Andrew Hoy piloted Hasenacher Jack Sparrow, a 10-year-old piebald Irish Sport Horse owned by Barbara Keller and Andrew, around the freshly minted course. Aside from a blip at the first water, they cruised around with purpose.

According to Andrew’s website, Jack and Andrew are both ambassadors for Right to Play, an international charity “which uses sport to educate and empower children and youth to overcome the effects of poverty, conflict and disease in disadvantaged communities.”

Well done! Go Eventing.

Cricket is a 2002 14.2 QH mare who is the total package. She’s taught many young kids (9-12 yrs) the ropes of eventing and inspired them to keep going up the levels. Cricket has placed very competitively in beginner novice events throughout the years, even landing a 5th place finish at Millbrook with an 11 year old aboard. She would make the perfect first event horse for a kid looking to learn from a lower level master. Has paced, fox hunted, and pulls a sled. Goes in a snaffle all 3 phases. Can easily do novice. Soy Tan Bonita is an 11yr old, 14.1 HH Canadian sport pony. No vices, can live in Stall or outside, trailers easy, barefoot. Soy is currently competing at novice level eventing moving up to Training. Free jumps 4ft with room to spare. In Dressage she is competing second level. Soy is very brave forward but not rushy. Great or a small adult but also Kid safe with trainer. Currently competed by an amateur going college. Located in Michigan.

Perfect Move Up Pony!

Daddy Said Yes! Fondly known as “Friday” this pony and his girl have conquered the world! They have done everything from pony club games to show jumping to eventing and dressage. Friday has won the Pony Cup at multiple USDF shows. He consistently turns out clean show jumping rounds and is super safe cross country.

Friday has helped his young rider progress from a D1 to a C1 in the local pony club and they qualified in every discipline they entered for Pony Club Championships (including dressage, show jumping, eventing, and games). He has taught her how to ride boldly cross country, forward to show jumping, and tactfully in dressage. They have fun on bareback farm trail rides and playing around with their pals.

Sadly offered for sale, his girl has unfortunately outgrown him. Friday is plenty talented to go Novice with his next rider if they choose to do so. He is virtually unflappable with no vices – trailer loads great, clips, stands tied, perfect for the farrier, loves his spa days, an easy keeper. Barefoot with no maintenance. Located in Georgia.

WELCOME TO MIAMI; Phenominal novice event pony for sale

Welcome to Miami is a 10 yr old 13.3 Welsh cross pony who has competed very successfully through novice and schooled plenty of training. If you want to get noticed in the show ring this is your guy. Moves like a big time dressage horse, and jumps training level jumps with plenty of room to spare.

His size doesn’t limit his scope. Take him out eventing one weekend and the pony jumpers the next. Scores in the 20’s so expect to be successful in the dressage ring to. “Cobblestone Roxanne” Wonder Pony

Cobblestone Roxanne is a 10 year old, 14.2, Roan, Connemara. She has top of the line breeding by Canal Laurinston out of Callowfeenish Mairton. Roxy has solid flat work, a ten mover, with automatic lead changes. Roxy is a brave, athletic, jumper with TONS of scope and perfect form. She’s currently being competed successfully at the Beginner Novice level, with a junior rider.

Her most recent run was at the Maryland Starter Trials where she finished third on her dressage score. Last year Roxy hunted a full season, first field with Piedmont and Orange County. Roxy is suitable for an ambitious, young rider to get miles in many different disciplines. Roxy is sadly outgrown. Located in Virginia.

Grade 1 winner Ring Weekend (Tapit — Free the Magic — Cryptoclearance) won over $1.5 million during his racing career under the watchful eyes of trainer Graham Motion. The 7-year-old gelding was retired last month and will now begin training for his next phase of life.

“While Ring Weekend is still sound and competitive, it’s time to hang up his cleats and let him move on to new frontiers,” West Point Thoroughbreds President Terry Finley said.

Phillip is no stranger to working with OTTBs (the names Truluck, The Foreman, and Icabad Crane should ring a bell) and said of his new prospect: “He is such an athlete. I expect he will be just as successful in his new career as he was on the racetrack.”

Check out the video of Phillip working with Ring Weekend over some of his first fences not long after he left the track. He looks to be a natural over fences and we can’t wait to see him out eventing!

Fitch’s Corner, located on 150 acres in the heart of Millbrook Hunt Country, belongs to Fernanda Kellogg and Kirk Henckels. It’s a private boarding facility that opens it’s gates to the whole of the eventing community every July. Fitch’s Corner is a much loved Area I venue, described by participants as “magical” and “perfection.”

This year’s running on July 21-22 was particularly special as it celebrated the event’s 25th anniversary. Marion de Vogel captured the spirit of the competition on camera and kindly shared it with EN. Congratulations to Fitch’s Corner on 25 years. Here’s to another 25.

CC Granville: “Levi” is an elegant six year old (2012), 16’2 dark grey thoroughbred gelding. Levi started his eventing career as a 5 year old and completed the season at training level. This spring he successfully upgraded to preliminary at Aspen Farms, and will be competing at Rebecca Farms in a few weeks.

Levi is an easy snaffle ride all three phases, is a soft easy ride down to a fence, and always tries to please. Flashy Grey Alert

Attention Pony Clubbers and Adult Amateurs! Charmer is an eight year old TB that I bought directly from his racing trainer in February 2013. He did local shows, novice combined tests, and competed in the beginner novice division of the War Horse Series in North Carolina his four and five year old years. Since then, he has been almost dormant while I went back to school. He’s been hacking out with occasional jumping and flat work. He has been back in a program for the last 30 days.

I’ve finally reached the decision that I don’t have the time to devote to him that he wants and deserves. He’s looking for a young rider or adult amateur that will appreciate his work ethic and forward mind set. He needs to be gotten fit again and then he could go almost any direction – dressage, eventing, jumpers, trail riding — I’ve even pushed cows on him.

No soundness issues, and up to date on all health and maintenance. Did all three phases of eventing in a double jointed snaffle and hacks out in a hackamore. He has ground manners and ships well solo or with others. His racing owner and breeder found me on social media, so he’s documented back to birth. Located in North Carolina.

Novice to NAYC: Partnerships Play a Part for Area III Young Rider Team

It’s a special moment to be selected for an event as prestigious as the FEI North American Youth Championships (NAYC). It’s even better to go on a horse that has taken you from Beginner Novice to the FEI level because through all the ups and downs over the years, you and your horse have formed a partnership founded on trust, understanding and communication.

Area III Young Riders is sending a full team of four to compete in the NAYC CCI* at The Event at Rebecca Farm this month. It’s an accomplishment in itself, but each of these young ladies is making her first appearance at NAYC on a horse she’s ridden through the lower levels up to FEI. Way to go!

Now without further adieu, let’s meet the Area III NAYC CCI* team!

Ryan Wood is 18 years old and from Mobile, Alabama. She and her 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Galway Blazer are longtime partners and have come up through the levels together. This year they’ve finished first, second and fourth in three Preliminary appearances and in April completed their first CCI* at the Ocala International 3-Day Festival of Eventing presented by Ocala Ranches.

“It is such an honor to be competing at this event and I am so excited to ride alongside my teammates. I always thought it would be amazing to compete at this championship, but never expected it to actually happen!” Ryan said.

“I wasn’t sure how far the lanky 3-year-old I bought would go and I certainly wasn’t sure how far we would go after a colic surgery when he was six. And yet, here we are! Montana will be a completely different show experience than I’ve ever had before, but I absolutely can’t wait.”

Grace Smith is 16 years old and from Newnan, Georgia. She and her 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Fernhill Saulsford Nazar have been partnered for two years. They competed in their first Novice together in summer of 2016 and were winning at Preliminary by early 2017. Most recently, they finished fifth at Chattahoochee Hills last month.

“My horse is feeling better than ever. We have both worked hard to get here and are honored to represent Area III at the NAYC. It is a dream come true!” Grace said.

Jessie Schwartz is 17 years old and from Alpharetta, Georgia. She and her 13-year-old Thoroughbred/Trakehner gelding WHF Kitaro have racked up several top 10 Preliminary finishes since moving up to the level in January 2017 and have successfully completed two CCI* events.

“I’m so excited to be chosen to represent Area III at NAYC this year. Since the day I started riding Kitaro four years ago I knew I wanted to go to Young Riders with him,” Jessie said.

“In these past years, he has not only matched but exceeded my determination to go after these dreams. Together we have figured out how to move up the levels and now I can’t wait to get the experience competing on a team with my best friend.”

Leila Saxe is 15 years old and from Atlanta, Georgia. She and the 10-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Mr. Bojangles, owned by Angelia and Wayne Saxe, are very experienced at the level, with 14 Preliminary and two CCI* completions under their belts.

“I am so honored and excited to be representing Area III at NAYC this year. I have owned Mr. Bojangles for three years now. When I first bought him we started at Beginner Novice. Who would have known we’d be where we are now?” Leila said.

“About seven months ago I moved away from my parents to train with Kyle Carter and make it on the Young Rider Team. This once in a lifetime opportunity has presented itself to me and I am so grateful for that. I am happy to ride and compete with my team at this event!”

The Area III team will be coached by Julie Richards who represented the Area III Young Riders at the NAYC CCI2* in 1988. She went on to be a member of the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Team, helping to earn a team bronze medal in 2004. Julie is based in Newnan, Georgia where she teaches and trains horses and riders of all levels. This is the first year coaching the Area III Young Riders. She said, “I look forward to helping guide these awesome girls through this championship in Montana.”

The Area III team will also be supported in Montana by head groom Katie Strickland. She has been a professional groom for over 25 years, working with upper level riders and Olympians. Fun fact: Katie groomed for Julie when she competed at Young Riders!

Area III Young Rider Coordinator Allina Bell will serve as chef d’equipe, parent wrangler and #1 cheerleader.

Olympic dressage rider and coach Michael Barisone may have taught Stephen Colbert how to ‘piaffe it’ on TV but he’s also worked with countless top dressage and eventing riders helping them hone their skills in the sandbox. He’s big on the building blocks of riding, staying determined no matter what, and says that “training horses is a lot like raising children.” [Learn more about Michael Barisone]

A nationwide study found that less than half of patients treated for concussion or mild traumatic brain injury received a follow up examination within three months of the initial diagnosis, leaving them at greater risk for long term effects. Of those patients involved in the study, 24 percent were seen for falls, “such as being unseated from a horse.” [Concussion not taken seriously enough]

Ben Hobday (GBR) and Jane Chambers’s Shadow Man hold the top spot after two phases while Team Great Britain leads in the FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing on 99.3 points. The U.S. is in second on 123 points and Canada is third on 126.9 points. It’s all to play for today at the only Eventing Nations Cup in the Western Hemisphere. 10:12 a.m. EST: Will Faudree and Caeleste pick up two runouts at 9A, the first of the brush corners. They opt to retire.

10:16 a.m. EST: Unfortunately Shelby Brost and Crimson, riding for the Canadian Nations Cup Team, pick up two runouts at 9A. They are ultimately eliminated after a third refusal.

10:21 a.m. EST: Great Britain’s Sophie Brown and Wil pick up 20 penalties at the second of the two brush corners (9B). Who’s up for a bonfire tonight?

10:41 a.m. EST: Oh and Lord Willing puts on the breaks at the Virginia Is for Lovers Picnic Table at 20. Allison is looking down as if checking for shoes and retires.

10:42 a.m. EST: Waylon Roberts is on course for the second time, this time with Lancaster. They are having a cracking round, taking all the straight routes and making them look easy, including those arena brush corners!

10:45 a.m. EST: Allie Knowles and her experienced partner Sound Prospect add 20 penalties at 9B. Ugh.

10:47 a.m. EST: Allie and Sound Prospect add another 20 at 11B, the second element in the Adequan Water Complex. Live updates show they are eliminated but I’m not sure where.

10:49 a.m. EST: Lindsay Kelley and Cooley Cruise Control have a runout at the first brush element at 9A but have an excellent ride through on the second attempt.

10:51 a.m. EST: It sounds like Lindsay and Cooley Cruise Control have the largest cheering section here!

10:53 a.m. EST: Waylon Roberts and Lancaster finished clear with 8.4 time penalties.

10:54 a.m. EST: Charlotte Collier and Clifford M have problems in the main arena at the Beverly Equestrian Brush Corners and are unfortunately eliminated for refusals.

11:30 a.m. EST: It wasn’t showing on the results earlier but Felix Vogg and Colero did in fact withdraw before cross country.

11:33 a.m. EST: Well we didn’t see it on the live stream but live results are showing Ben and Shadow Man picked up 20 penalties at 9B as well as 7.2 time penalties.

11:34 a.m. EST: Sydney Conley Elliot and Cisko A finish one second under the time for our third double clear of the day!

11:36 a.m. EST: Clayton Fredericks has fallen from Luksor at the O’Connor Equestrian Coffin at 5. They activated the MIM at the first element and then the horse ducked out at the skinny brush wedge at C, popping Clayton out of the tack. He’s up and okay.

11:41 a.m. EST: Lillian Heard and LCC Barnaby had a cracking clear round with 9.6 time penalties, taking them well up the standings from 32nd to 8th in the clubhouse.

11:42 a.m. EST: I really like the horse on course now. This is Paramount Importance with Lauren Kieffer. They only partnered in December but already look like a polished, well-established pair. This horse is a very stylish jumper!

11:45 a.m. EST: Lauren takes a very wide turn to the brush corners and holds Paramount Importance’s energy together for a good ride through the arena.

11:49 a.m. EST: It is just not Alexandra Knowles’ day. Sadly she has two flybys at 9A with Morswood and opts to retire.

11:53 a.m. EST: Lauren and Paramount Importance finish clear with 9.6 time penalties to move up more than 20 places into the top ten.

11:54 a.m. EST: Will Coleman and Off the Record could challenge Georgie Spence for the lead but they have to go clear. So far having a super round.

11:57 a.m. EST: A casual canter through the finish – Will knew he was good on the time! He and Off the Record take over the lead by 0.1 penalties.

12:01 p.m. EST: Australia’s Ema Klugman and Bendigo deliver a beautiful round with 8.8 time penalties and an unfortunate 11 penalties for activating a frangible pin, though we didn’t see it! Fun fact: Ema is also a concert pianist and this is only her fifth season eventing.

12:06 p.m. EST: Sydney Conley Elliot and QC Diamantaire add 20 penalties at 9A but are clear through on the second attempt.

12:07 p.m. EST: Jessica Phoenix and Pavarotti had just a few too many time penalties to take over the lead. They add 5.2 time to sit third after a super clear. That guarantees the win for Will Coleman and Off the Record!

12:09 p.m. EST: We’re down to the last few horses and they’re all riding on a Nations Cup team.

12:14 p.m. EST: Sydney and QC Diamantaire finish with 20 jumping and 16.4 time penalties.

12:15 p.m. EST: Lisa Marie Fergusson and Honor Me finish right on the optimum time to secure a second double clear round for the Canadian team. Individually they move up 30 places. Wow!

12:19 p.m. EST: Britain’s anchor Leslie Law pilots Voltaire De Tre to a clear round with 8.8 time penalties.

12:21 p.m. EST: Our final combination is on course – Buck Davidson and Park Trader riding on the Nations Cup team for USA.

12:23 p.m. EST: Buck and Park Trader add 20 at the second brush corner in the arena. Commentator Ed Holloway said it: “That fence is just a demon!”

12:26 p.m. EST: Buck isn’t hanging around despite picking up an early 20.

12:29 p.m. EST: It’s been confirmed Great Britain wins the Nations Cup team event. We’re waiting on Buck’s score to confirm second place.

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Another Hunter Trials Helmet Cam You Won’t Want to Miss

Last week we watched a helmet cam of two juniors competing their ponies at the Carlanstown Hunter Trials. We loved it so much, we’re sharing another video from the same venue.

This time we get a look at the the Open division winning round, where a pair of competitors gallop over hill and dale on what looks like one of the most fun courses we’ve ever seen.

We get to watch close to five minutes of this wild and wooly course (casually set to the tunes of Black Sabbath), but the video ends after a tree branch knocks the camera off kilter.

Two full afternoons later and the pastures are mowed. We made a huge mistake of skipping a week of mowing and the weeds were up to my knees (don’t worry, we don’t have any horses out there yet). I finished and parked the mower just in time for a strong afternoon thunderstorm to drench everything and make it all grow again. #summerlife

A mare who had just undergone a successful surgery went into cardiac arrest while being transferred to recovery. The veterinary team managed to revive her through several minutes of chest compressions along with mechanical ventilation and medication. The mare went on to recover fully with no adverse effects. Bombay ice is a 16h 2002 Irish sports Horse. He has competed successfully up to cnc1* with a junior. He has evented and fox hunted for many seasons both in Ireland and the USA. He’s a snaffle ride for all three phases. He’s completely amateur friendly and will happily take a joke. No maintenance. Located in Kentucky.

Copycat Chloe- “Chloe” is a 2002 Thoroughbred Trakehner mare who has shown successfully through the 3* level with Allison Springer, and has been teaching a YR at prelim/training for the last two years. Chloe has a jump that often wows onlookers, is a lovely mover, and is a pleasure to ride. She could easily take someone to their first 1*/intermediate and would also be a super 1.20 horse. Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: The Most Exciting Helmet Cam

We’ve watched a lot of helmet cams of eventers on cross country galloping through open fields, down wide wooded paths and over a course that flows in a smooth, logical way.

This helmet cam is different. And it is one of the best ones I’ve ever seen.

At the Carlanstown Novice Hunter Trials, two kids and their ponies jump off the starting line like their tails are on fire. While watching I thought maybe these young riders could stand to take a tug or two, but it still looks like an absolute blast!

These competitors aren’t negotiating your run of the mill cross country course. They don’t just jump in and run through water, they gallop down the length of what appears to be a river.

And they don’t just run down a wooded path, they negotiate — at speed — a claustrophobically narrow trail which might have been created by deer.

And I don’t know what exactly you’d call this question … steps up out of a canyon? But it looks like fun.

They must have walked this course 20 times! There are fences everywhere, narrow openings in the tree line and I have absolutely no idea which way they’re going to turn at any given moment.

The whole trip is punctuated by the rider’s high praise and delight for her incredibly game little horse. While the video ends with her taking a tumble in one of the many water crossings (she remounted unharmed and finished the round), you’re left with the desire to forget another flat day and go careering over hill and dale with a barn buddy instead.

The U.S. event list below looks packed as ever, but now is when my personal travel schedule slows down. I love to be on the road, but it’s nice staying home, too, and working around on our farm. We have amazing nurseries nearby and this weekend I went a little wild, buying up lots of flowers and hanging baskets. Beau and I enjoyed some time in the tomato fields, too!

This weekend William Funnell won his fourth Hickstead Derby and will go down in the history books for his success. But another Hickstead winner, a pint-sized Irish pony named Stroller and his rider, Marion Coakes, captured the hearts of thousands with their victory.
