Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field Confirmed for 2021

We are pleased to share that Aiken’s most anticipated spring event, the $50,000 Liftmaster Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field, will return March 5-6, 2021.

Now in it’s third year, the eventing showcase is dedicated to putting on a world-class event while also strictly adhering to US Equestrian COVID-19 protocols to maintain safety of all participants. Because of this, The Aiken Horse Park Foundation will not be able to welcome spectators to this year’s event. However, they’ve partnered with Horse & Country TV to provide a robust live stream experience with wall-to-wall coverage.

While the schedule has not been finalized, we can expect dressage to be held Friday morning, March 5, followed by show jumping Friday eventing. Cross country will conclude the competition on Saturday, March 6.

Invitations have been extended to the top 40 ranked riders in the world, some of whom are based in the United States during the winter training season. All four of the US Eventing Elite Training list riders: Phillip Dutton, Boyd Martin, Doug Payne, and two-time winner Liz Halliday-Sharp have already committed to this year’s competition.
“The Aiken Showcase is a competition that I look forward to each year and it’s such a great early season challenge for my top horses,” Liz said. “Many of our nation’s best riders and horses are there to try and take the title, so to win the event you have to put in a great performance in each phase and fight for it to the end! I am really looking forward to competing there again and I will be doing all that I can to win the event for a 3rd year in a row!”

US Equestrian hosted their Annual Meeting over the weekend that concluded with their year-end awards ceremony. Kent Farrington was crowned 2020 International Equestrian of the Year, and Gazelle, with whom he won the 2020 $213,000 American Gold Cup Grand Prix CSI4*, was named International Horse of the Year. You can read more from USEF.

Chrissy hasn’t shared which discipline she’ll settle into, but she definitely has the sense of humor for eventing. First up, finding the right equipment… a.k.a. breaking in your boots.

This past year has crippled many events across the country, but we are excited to highlight a new addition to the USEA calendar, Barnstaple South, which will be hosting their first recognized horse trial this weekend, January 9-10. They are located in Morriston, Florida, just outside of Ocala and boast 40 acres of cross country. Follow the live scores this weekend.

We’re now three whole days into 2021 and that means eventers are beginning their mass exodus south for the first few months of the season. While most head to Aiken or Ocala, many eventers take this opportunity to sharpen their dressage and show jumping skills in Wellington. Phillip Dutton has used this strategy in the past, and we will look forward to seeing him back at events come March.

Member of the U.S. Team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games has been sold to a new rider. Boyd Martin announced on his blog that Blackfoot Mystery will now partner with a Dallas-based rider. He and Boyd had their last outing together at Tryon where Boyd says, “He was pushing himself too hard to get the job done.” Big Red will certainly always be remembered for his trying heart at the Olympics and finishing strong for the U.S. team. We look forward to following his career with a new rider.

It wouldn’t be a proper eventing holiday without well wishes from our favorite reindeer Donner! For the last several years we’ve re-shared the story of Donner and Comet leaving their eventing careers in the dust to take it up with Mr. Claus for a big Christmas Eve. This is a tradition I always look forward to, and even this year when things are so different, it’s nice to see something very familiar. Faralli’s Flame is a 5 year old 15.1Hand New Forest TB/Conn cross. Sired by Forrest Flame, Faralli is bred to be a true FUN small sporty fellow. This horse is wise beyond his years and has had a perfect start to be a competent, educated and sane event horse. He’s had loads of experience going to competitions as well as pure life education riding out solo and in groups.

Plenty of experience at the novice level in eventing and is currently schooling 3’3″. He has even competed in a 3’3″ hunter derby. Faralli is quite laid back but has plenty of jump for the higher levels. He is a very straightforward ride over fences and on the flat. Zen has been under saddle for 3 months and has taken everything thrown at him in stride. He trailers well, has great ground manners, and hacks out like a pro! No buck/bolt/spook. Zen has had very correct professional training. He is confident in all three gaits, has started basic lateral work and popped over small jumps with ease. She is very well trained and easy in her flatwork, and a very honest, uncomplicated jumper. She is super to hack out alone and with company, and is a pleasure in the barn. She would love a job with variety including hunter paces etc. She would suit an AA looking for a fun, consistent and well-educated partner! Price is neg to the perfect AA home!

Paddy is a great option for Eventing as he is very brave, has plenty of step, balanced, willing, and loves to jump. He would also make a 3 ring horse as well. He as been very easy and uncomplicated XC schooling. Does not pull, stop, or spook. He is a packer over fences!

Hacks out alone and with company and has some mileage at schooling HJ and dressage shows. Such a nice guy! Very suitable for Jr/AA. Plenty of talent to go thru Training Level at least. Located in South Carolina.

OSITO – Stunning 11 YO 16.3-17 h Dark Bay OTTB. Successfully competing at Training level with DR scores in the mid 20s to low 30s. No XC faults. Recent 1st place finish on DR score of 25.7 Qualified for AECs in 2019 and 2020. He has good ground manners, stands for the farrier, loads and unloads from the trailer nicely. Has made several 2-3 week trips without any issues. He is an energetic guy with a playful personality. Has the talent for more, but happy to be a TR level packer. Currently in NM.

Sunday morning had some fabulous views for those of us at Ashland Farm in Walnut Grove, Georgia. It was the perfect amount if chill without being too cold, and the golden hue made my ride feel extra magical — so magical in fact that my ex-racehorse decided we could in fact manage a right lead canter. Small miracles are all around us.

The brain and the body often find themselves at odds when training horses. Your horse’s brain will begin to process information about how they are feeling even before a certain sensation. A lot like feeling satisfied after the first few bites of a meal — you haven’t had the time to adequately digest, but your brain knows that’s what’s upcoming, so you get a gratifying sensation. As does the horse, when they are facing something they know was challenging before, they might begin to display anxiousness before you even ask for the movement. Liz Halliday-Sharp has accomplished many things, now including becoming the first woman to win the USEA Rider of the Year award since 1981. The last time a woman took the title was Karen Stives 39 years ago. This year Liz won nine international and 16 national competitions among a host of other impressive finishes. Congratulations, Liz!
