Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field Confirmed for 2021

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z. Photo by Shelby Allen.

We are pleased to share that Aiken’s most anticipated spring event, the $50,000 Liftmaster Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field, will return March 5-6, 2021.

Now in it’s third year, the eventing showcase is dedicated to putting on a world-class event while also strictly adhering to US Equestrian COVID-19 protocols to maintain safety of all participants. Because of this, The Aiken Horse Park Foundation will not be able to welcome spectators to this year’s event. However, they’ve partnered with Horse & Country TV to provide a robust live stream experience with wall-to-wall coverage.

While the schedule has not been finalized, we can expect dressage to be held Friday morning, March 5, followed by show jumping Friday eventing. Cross country will conclude the competition on Saturday, March 6.

Phillip Dutton and Z. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Invitations have been extended to the top 40 ranked riders in the world, some of whom are based in the United States during the winter training season. All four of the US Eventing Elite Training list riders: Phillip Dutton, Boyd Martin, Doug Payne, and two-time winner Liz Halliday-Sharp have already committed to this year’s competition.
“The Aiken Showcase is a competition that I look forward to each year and it’s such a great early season challenge for my top horses,” Liz said. “Many of our nation’s best riders and horses are there to try and take the title, so to win the event you have to put in a great performance in each phase and fight for it to the end! I am really looking forward to competing there again and I will be doing all that I can to win the event for a 3rd year in a row!”
We look forward to bringing you all the latest and greatest from this winter showcase. Go eventing.

Event horses are so much more than what you see galloping past you at big events. They’ve got big personalities. Pfun is among this variety. Between his quirky name, his favorite person and his inner celebrity, “Teddy” is a lot more than a handsome grey horse. [Behind The Stall Door With: Pfun]

As eventers I’m sure we’re all familiar with dropping the F-bomb a time or two. The F word here of course is failure. Competitors have long said they learned much more from their failures than their successes, but it’s a lot more difficult to accept that in our day-to-day riding. Set goals for every ride, fail sometimes, and learn. [The F Word]

What exactly is a “flake.” That’s part of the problem — they can all be so different. Despite the convenience of flaked hay, your Pony Club instructor may have been onto something when they told you to feed by weight. [Don’t Flake Out: Feed Horse Hay by Weight, Not by Flake]

Seasoned campaigners often make appearances on Sport Horse Nation, but right now there are a few celebrities on board looking for their next partner. These three listings have experience through the four-star level:

Big Berry Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Competitive four star horse with unparalleled jumping record

Big Berry is for sale, and due to some unforeseen circumstances, his price has been dropped. Biggie is one of the most exciting horses in the country, and the kind of horse that doesn’t come up for sale very often. Experience up to 4*s, a perfect career xc jumping record, and an almost perfect career SJ record. His dressage gets better and better, currently scoring mid 30’s at the A/4star level and should come down more with experience and strength. This horse is on the up swing as a 10 year old horse with 2 seasons of advanced miles. Should have done 4L this year but his rider broke his leg in the fall, and COVID broke the season…

You will not find a horse like this for sale often. Sound, honest, full of potential, and easy easy easy to jump. Goes xc in a snaffle and is completely genuine. Owners are motivated to sell and considering offers. Located in Pennsylvania.

Tuesday News:

The brain and the body often find themselves at odds when training horses. Your horse’s brain will begin to process information about how they are feeling even before a certain sensation. A lot like feeling satisfied after the first few bites of a meal — you haven’t had the time to adequately digest, but your brain knows that’s what’s upcoming, so you get a gratifying sensation. As does the horse, when they are facing something they know was challenging before, they might begin to display anxiousness before you even ask for the movement. Liz Halliday-Sharp has accomplished many things, now including becoming the first woman to win the USEA Rider of the Year award since 1981. The last time a woman took the title was Karen Stives 39 years ago. This year Liz won nine international and 16 national competitions among a host of other impressive finishes. Congratulations, Liz! While stall enrichments can be a nice addition to your horse’s home, research shows that they don’t quite do enough to improve their overall welfare. “The horse, which has lived in open spaces for the last several millennia with unrestricted access to forage and especially while establishing strong and complex social relationships with other horses, just isn’t made for living alone, isolated in a box, regardless of how well-set-up it is.” [Enrichments Aren’t Enough to Make Box Stalls Better]
