Are you headed to Rolex? Is your shopping route planned? Is this a friends’ getaway, a once-in-a-lifetime trip to see the world’s top eventers, or maybe even an aspirational look at your future riding career?

No matter what brings you to RK3DE, Judy McSwain and Fleeceworks (Booth 117), along with Eventing Nation, are ready to make your Rolex experience even better. Get a team together for the second annual Fleeceworks Rolex Scavenger Hunt!

The grand prize is a clinic at your facility with professional eventer Tamie Smith of Next Level Eventing. Each day of Rolex, you’ll have trivia questions to answer and a to-do list that can only happen at Rolex.

How do I enter?

Get your team together! Teams can be made up of two, three, or four people. Name your team. Be creative! Email the names of your team members and their email addresses to Elizabeth Howell at [email protected] starting RIGHT NOW and no later than Thursday, April 28 at 5 p.m. EST. You can also send a Facebook message to Fleeceworks with the info. Elizabeth will email you a complete list of rules and requirements.

What do I do when I get to Rolex?

There will be two types of tasks — daily trivia questions and a Scavenger Hunt To-Do List. Come to the Fleeceworks booth (#117) to collect your daily trivia questions and tasks from Judy. Then turn your written answers in to Judy or Elizabeth at the booth. This MUST be completed each day of the competition at Rolex.

Be prepared for trivia questions that cover:

  • Historic moments of Rolex
  • Career achievements of Rolex horses and riders
  • Questions about Fleeceworks saddle pads, natural fabrics and Tamie Smith’s top mount Fleeceworks Royal aka “Rory”

For example, some of last year’s questions included:

  • Who was the first horse to win the Rolex Kentucky CCI4* and how much did he cost?
  • How many mares have won the Rolex Kentucky CCI4*?
  • What was the only fence from the 1968 World Championships that was left on the course for the inaugural Rolex Kentucky CCI4*?

And then you’ll have a few tasks to complete.

The Scavenger Hunt Task List

Come to the Fleeceworks booth (#117) to receive the task list that must be completed to successfully complete the scavenger hunt. Complete each item on the checklist and then post your results on Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #RK3DEHUNT17.

Some of these things will be easy, such as “Follow Fleeceworks on Facebook and Instagram.”

Some may be a little more challenging. Possibilities may include “Take a photo of a Rolex rider” or “Get a selfie in the Land Rover Extreme Stable Experience booth” or “Film a mannequin challenge video of your team.”

How do I earn extra entries?

You can earn additional points by completing additional tasks that will be assigned each day. Possibilities include things like: “Take a selfie with any Rolex horse” and receive an extra entry. “Take a selfie with a Fleeceworks rider at the Fleeceworks autograph signing Saturday after cross country in the Fleeceworks booth,” earn one extra entry. You’ll receive a complete list of extra entry possibilities when you check in with Judy.

How will the winning team be chosen?

All teams who turn in completed checklists by the end of competition on Sunday morning and have had their entries verified by Fleeceworks will be entered into the drawing to determine the winning team. Bonus entries will be added. The winning team will be announced the week after Rolex by Fleeceworks and Eventing Nation.

Do I have to be at Rolex to participate?

Yes. But, Fleeceworks will be running online promotions and specials during the week of Rolex, so be sure to check their Facebook and Instagram pages for details.

Requirements for clinic host facility: The winning team must have a facility that can host a two-day clinic with up to 15 riders. The facility must have safe and accessible areas for a dressage and show jumping clinic. A cross country area is a bonus, but is not necessary. An indoor arena is preferable in the case of inclement weather. Canadians are eligible to enter as long as the facility is in the U.S.

Should the winning team be unable to host the clinic, the prize will be given to another randomly drawn team that has completed the scavenger hunt requirements. We will discuss details with the winners when they are chosen.

The clinic with Tamie Smith will be hosted by Fleeceworks. All members from the winning team will have clinic costs waived for one horse. Please no substitutions of riders at the clinic. Up to 10 additional participants are welcome to ride in the clinic at a cost of $200 per horse and rider combination. All proceeds from the clinic will be donated to one of the charities in the Fleeceworks Pads With Purpose program. Please note that facility, stabling and other fees may apply.

Michael Jung Has an Instagram and We’ve Officially Become Stalkers

This may not be breaking news to some, but judging by the fact that I am just now getting wind of this, I figured I wasn’t the only one who didn’t know. Michael Jung has an Instagram account. And he’s posting photos from Rolex!

No, it’s not just a fan page. It’s a bona fide, legitimate Instagram account and the inner social media stalker in us all is finally breathing a happy little sigh of relief.

Not only do we get a glimpse into the daily life of Mr. Jung, we get to catch up with the horses he competes in pure show jumping as well as his eventers. We also get to play fly on the wall with some behind the scenes intel from his home base in Germany. Basically, we couldn’t be much happier.

This weekend Andrew Diemer returned to the sport of eventing after a seven year hiatus. Competing at Beginner Novice seems like a pretty unremarkable come back for the 2008 NAJYRC team silver medalist and national Intermediate rider. However, in the winter of 2015 Andrew found himself in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital with endocarditis, a bacterial infection in his heart that destroyed two heart valves. Four emergency surgeries with in 96 hours left Andrew with two mechanical  valves and a permanent pacemaker. Collateral damage to his right foot resulted in a transtibial amputation of his lower right leg a few weeks later.

Andrew returned to riding almost immediately upon release from rehab and began competing again in his other equine passion, polocrosse. In October of last year he anchored a national championship winning team, earning a best player award. He began working toward a return to eventing about the same time and took over the ride on his dad’s horse. Future plans revolve around having fun with the sport while he completes his degree. April is National Limb Loss Awareness month! #amplifyyourself!

The Fleeceworks RK3DE Scavenger Hunt is returning as one of EN’s contests at Rolex this year! One lucky EN reader will win a clinic with Tamie Smith at the facility of your choice. Stay tuned for the announcement will full details about the scavenger hunt coming later today on EN. Be sure to follow Fleeceworks on Facebook and Instagram for more!

Congratulations to EN reader Michelle von Schmidt-Pauli, winner of Majyk Equipe’s VIP Trip to Rolex! Michelle has never attended Rolex before, and we are so excited to team up with Majyk Equipe to help her make the trip to Kentucky for the first time. Be sure to check out Majyk Equipe’s full line of protective equine boots on their website. [Majyk Equipe]

Rolex week is finally here! Here at EN, we fondly refer to the RK3DE as eventing’s Super Bowl, and it’s all hands on deck to bring you the best and most ridiculous coverage of the event for the next full week! The best advice I ever received about going to Rolex is to “pack for everything” which I’ve now experienced is 100% true. Bring hats, clothes, outerwear and shoes suitable for heat waves, blizzards and floods. Never, never go to Rolex without your rain gear, no matter what the weatherman says.

The Loudoun Hunt Pony Club Horse Trials in Leesburg, Va. needs volunteers for all positions April 29-30. If you’re interested in helping out, contact Amy Geyer at [email protected].

Rolex allows spectators to bring their dogs, but there are some rules. For the safety of the competitors and other people and animals enjoying the show, dogs must be on leashes at all times and according they are not allowed in the Rolex Stadium any of the Grandstands or Hospitality Tents, even if they “fit in a Louis Vuitton bag.” In exchange for a small donation, The Lexington Humane Society will provide on site doggie daycare because you don’t want to be the person whose canine destroys Michael Jung’s winning streak. [Should I Bring My Dog to Rolex?]

Eventing stars gathered in advance of Badminton CCI4* and to honor the memory of Hannah Francis, who bravely fought bone cancer and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for cancer research. Another £18,000 was raised through ticket sales. The event included talks from course designer Eric Winter along with famous names in the sport, music, dinner and a live auction that included absolutely incredible items. [Willberry Does Badminton]

Sunday Video: Counting Down the Days Until the Intercollegiate Championship

The second annual USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Championship is one month away, and collegiate eventers around the country have been hard at work practicing, fundraising and working together to make sure their college or university will be well represented. Check out what Clemson University’s team has been up to this season as they prepare for the Championship in the above video created by April Ann Crawford.

The Intercollegiate Championship will once again take place at Virginia Horse Trials in Lexington, Va. on May 25-28. Ten teams from ten schools competed in 2016, and the organizers are looking forward to welcoming even more students this year. Want to know more? Best of JN: Melanie Smith Taylor’s Purple Trailer

GHM with the US Team of (From L-R:) Joe Fargis, Melanie Smith Taylor, Anne Kursinski, and Katie Monahan Prudent after they won the Nations Cup at Rome in 1983. Photo Credit: L’Année Hippique, Courtesy of Jennie Carleton.

There’s a dark allure to the Global Champions Tour for me. One the one hand, the grandeur and spectacle of it all is mesmerizing. On the other hand, it also makes the whole dream of it feel so far away.

It sometimes feels like they’re literally living on another planet from us. A world filled with first class tickets from one show to the next, and a team of people to get you there, while we change a muddy tire on our run-down truck on the side of the road for the umpteenth time. It’s amazing and depressing all at once.

It brings me back to earth when you see moments like the one we brought you last year of Nick Skelton and Laura Kraut spreading their own shavings at a show, or the humble attitude and graciousness of McLain Ward after we won the FEI World Cup Final. But my favorite “YOU CAN DO THIS” anecdote comes from a little further back: Olympic gold medalist Melanie Smith Taylor.

In Unrelenting: The Real Story—Horses, Bright Lights, and My Pursuit of Excellence by George H. Morris, Melanie provides a candid vision of her introduction to the man who would launch her career. At the time (the late 1960s), she had only taken lessons with her mother and at her local pony club, but her mother was a good horsewoman, and knew her daughter was the real deal. They’d heard George Morris could make solid riders into champions, and in Melanie’s words,

“We hitched up our purple station wagon to our matching two-horse trailer and drove eight hours on two-lane roads to Germantown, Tennessee for a lesson with him.”

If you consider everything you know about GHM, you can imagine how horrified he was at the sight of that purple concoction. You can guess the looks she got from other riders. But dang, the girl could ride.

She had to make a few more good impressions on him before she got her shot, but finally, he invited her to come along to the winter circuit in Florida. When she won the first recognized jumper class she ever entered, George invested in her 100% until the day she won her Olympic Gold Medal.

Melanie had to work ten times as hard as his other students – trading lessons for grunt labor of mucking stalls, braiding, and exercising horses. But that hard work turned her into a machine, and she never took a single lesson for granted. Arguably, having less resources didn’t hold Melanie back – it made her into a champion.

“I’ll tell you this: I never paid for a lesson with George ever, my entire life,” Melanie said. “He was so good to me. He knew I couldn’t afford it and that I would work for everything.”

Melanie of course went on to be one of only two riders to ever win the Triple Crown of American Show Jumping: The American Invitational, the International Jumping Derby, and the American Gold Cup. She won the FEI World Cup Final in 1982, and was part of team gold at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. She made it happen through sheer will and hard work, not through dollars and cents.

We know money is what makes the world go round, but if you’re breaking your back to stay in the game, never forget the deep-rooted principles of Melanie’s success:

  1. Never be embarrassed by being scrappy – own it. If a matching purple station wagon and horse trailer are what you’ve got to work with, then you’ve got skin in the game. Own your reality, and then work and ride your guts out.
  2. Find mentors and benefactors who believe in you. Melanie is one of many riders whose career was made by generous geniuses of the sport who saw a spark and fueled them to become a flame. Show your spark, and share it with the right people.
  3. See yourself the way your mother sees you. When Melanie first rode with George, her mother was a sensible but firm advocate. When George asked Mrs. Smith where she wanted her daughter to end up, she responded with, “How about the Olympic Team?” Be that advocate and pursue that confidence in yourself every day until you reach your goal, then set a new goal.

If the pinque coat is the thing you want more than anything else in the world, do not let money stop you. Do not make excuses. Do not give up. This is the great adventure of our sport, and you have the same right to glory as anyone else.

Go Melanie, Go Jumping, but most of all, GO YOU.

7 Things You Must Do at Rolex 2017

Seasoned Rolex-goers have their plan of action set early. They’ll hit all the trade fair for great deals, snag autographs from their favorite riders, earn those 10,000 steps 10 times over on official cross country course walks and exploring the stunning Kentucky Horse Park. Everyone has their must-do list between rides, but Rolex is rolling out some new activities and entertainment opportunities this year that you need to know about. Here are seven things you must do at Rolex Kentucky 2017.

Farm-to-Table Fundraiser

Love local eats? Support the 2017 Rolex Kentucky official charity Central Kentucky Riding for Hope and sign up for the Farm-to-Table Fundraiser on Thursday, April 27 in the famous “Big Barn” at KHP. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvre beginning at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by a three-course dinner for which a special menu featuring locally sourced ingredients has been set by Kentucky chefs Jeremy Ashby and Janey Thompson (check out the menu!). Tickets are available online or call 859-254-8123.

Run for Charity

Here’s another way to support Central Kentucky Riding for Hope. The RK-5K Twilight Race has become a popular tradition at Rolex. Take your pick between a timed 5k or a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk (that sounds more my speed!). The race is Friday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. and the proceeds go to the official charity.

Last year EN challenged Chronicle of the Horse in a race to the 5k finish. A strange series of events that followed unsurprisingly resulted in John, Wylie and Chinch bringing “shame upon this family” and owing a debt in beer. I say, this calls for a rematch! (Breaking: EN is now interviewing for new staff members with marathon experience, the ability to focus on a single task and can start this week.)

If you just want to register for the race, click here.

Camp in comfort. Photo via Flickr/CC/Ranch Seeker. (This is not an example of Rolex glamping).

Glamping

Experience your Rolex-cation in a whole new way with glamping in the Kentucky Horse Park! Glampers (glamorous campers) will stay in waterproof canvas tents complete with a bed, table and chairs, a light, blankets and pillows. There will be a fire pit for cooking and socializing and an area that you can charge your phone (you might be ‘camping’ but you still need to read EN). Click here to learn more. Glamping not your style? Click here for regular KHP camping info.

Champions Live!

New for 2017, Rolex is bringing you “Champions Live!”, a panel discussion featuring an equestrian champion from each of the three Olympic disciplines. This year’s featured champions are Eventing’s own Phillip Dutton, show jumping legend and NBC Analyst Melanie Smith Taylor and Grand Prix dressage rider Silva Martin.

The panel will be moderated by the one and only James Wofford, a champion several times over! Meet in the Kentucky Club at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, following the final horse inspection. The panel is FREE and open to anyone with a Sunday grounds ticket. If you can’t make it in person, USEF Network will be live streaming the entire session!

Pre-Show Jumping Show

The show jumping opening ceremonies will have a special guest this year. Dan James will be performing in the Rolex Arena at noon on Sunday. Dan is one-half of the training and entertainment duo Double Dan Horsemanship. Dan James and Dan Steers have taught clinics and performed in exhibitions all over their home country of Australia and other major events around the world since forming Double Dan Horsemanship in 2009, including performing on Australia’s Got Talent in 2011.

Their mission is to “help create well rounded horses that are able to go on to do any discipline or job to achieve that perfect equine relationship.” Don’t miss the chance to watch how it’s done!

Watch Pony Club Mounted Games at Rolex! Photo by Leslie Wylie.

ALL the Demos!

There is never a shortage of interesting FREE demonstrations and exhibitions taking place in the Walnut Ring. Several of these performances occur more than once so don’t panic if you’re favorite Rolex competitor is in the ring at the same time as a demo you really want to see.

Some of this year’s demos include the Keeneland Pony Club Quadrille, a Pas de deux to “Beauty and the Beast,” Fleur De Lis Vaulters, the Prince Philip Cup Games, tons of breed exhibitions and a preview of the 2017 Thoroughbred Makeover. There is much more to see! Click for a full schedule.

“Hello, and welcome to the EN Tailgate Party. Can we get you some champagne? A new tattoo?” Photo by Leslie Wylie.

Party with EN
And of course, you won’t want to miss the party of the year. The EN Tailgate, presented by Amerigo, is full free swag, refreshments, games and general insanity. Chinch will be there and so will a few other celebrity guests. Enjoy watching the cross country while you party down; we’ve got a great location this year. Stay tuned for more details. See you there!

A big congratulations and good luck to a longtime barnmate of mine, Gabby Smith, who is soon headed off to beautiful sunny California to be a working student at Next Level Eventing. Gabby will be gaining entry into a world-class program, and the gals at NLE will be gaining one of hardest-working young women I’ve ever come across. Our loss is California’s gain, but we wish her the absolute best of luck in pursuing her goals!

Cinaero Studios posted a new promo video for the July 2017 Great Meadow International CICO3* in The Plains, Va. and it definitely got our hearts pumping! Last year, Great Meadow was the site of the first FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing outside of Europe and is once again on the Nations Cup calendar this year.

Eyes are also on Great Meadow as it, along with Fair Hill in Elkton, Maryland, is on a short list of venues being considered to host a new CCI4* in the United States. If approved by the FEI, the new CCI4* will join Rolex Kentucky as the second four-star in the U.S. and become the seventh CCI4* event in the world.

Tickets for the 2017 Great Meadow CICO3* are already on sale. Visit the Great Meadow website for more information. For more about the FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing, click here.
