Friday News & Notes from Zoetis

Beach sunset ears. Photo by Allie Conrad.

Lately, there has been a plethora of photos of horsey friends riding their horses on the beach and having an unreasonably good time. All I want for Christmas is the chance sometime soon to take my horse and gallop on a beach, can somebody help me make this happen? Sadly I do not live anywhere near a beach, nor do I even know how to go about finding a beach that would allow a wildebeest horse running pell-mell.

News From Around the Globe:

Concussions are often more dangerous than we give them credit for. “I had no idea that I had a concussion until I got sick at night and woke up with a bad headache that wouldn’t go away,” said eventer Mia Farley who fell at an event a few years ago and ended up with a bad concussion. This story isn’t uncommon – concussion symptoms may not show up for hours or days after the impact. “Riders think ‘I have to be knocked out to get a concussion,’ or ‘I have to land on my head.’ Which is not true. You can land hard on your feet and it can still shake up the brain. It has nothing to do with losing consciousness. People also need to realize that the majority of concussions don’t happen in competition – they happen at home,” said Dr. Mark Hart, the U.S. Equestrian Team Physician and FEI Medical Committee Chair. Amateur riders, take note! Rules for amateurs riding in USEF sports has changed, effective as of December 1st. The USEF Board of Directors met on November 22, 2021 and approved the following Extraordinary Rule Changes. Read on to find out if any of them affect you. [Amateur Extraordinary Rule Changes]

If you want to know the best way to clip your horse, take a look at this archive video of Mary King and her former groom Jodie Summers clipping out the late Kings Temptress, for some expert advice on what to wear, where to do it and how to get it right. Before you start though, make sure you’ve got the best clippers for the job and decide which type of clip you’re going to do and draw on the lines with chalk if that’s helpful. While it’s known as the season to be jolly for the majority, equestrians are still battling foul weather and dark nights while trying to prepare for the next competitive season. However, just because you have a horse in your life doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the festivities, even if you are fitting it all in between the chaos of caring for your number one. Major Personnel Changes in USEF Eventing High Performance Leadership

US Equestrian made some sweeping changes to their Eventing High Performance leadership team today, parting ways with both Eventing Performance Director Erik Duvander as well as Managing Director of Eventing Jenni Autry. Erik Duvander’s contract expired on November 30 and has not been renewed. The Chronicle of the Horse first reported the departure of Erik, who succeeded David O’Connor to helm the U.S. eventing high performance program in 2017. Jenni Autry joined US Equestrian as Managing Director of Eventing in 2019.

Under Erik Duvander’s leadership, the U.S. eventing team finished eighth at the 2018 World Equestrian Games, won gold at the 2019 Pan American Games, and finished sixth in the 2020 Olympics this past summer. The latter half of 2021 had proven to be fruitful for the program, yielding the first American winner of the Aachen CCIO4* (Will Coleman), a silver medal at the Boekelo Nations Cup leg, and the first American 5* winner since 2008 at Maryland (Boyd Martin).

“I’ve had four incredible years with the U.S. team and have really enjoyed working with the exceptional riders, getting to know the owners, and working with the beautiful horses,” Erik told EN. “It’s been a real privilege to work with this team. I think we pointed the needle in the right and better direction so I’m very happy with the work I’ve accomplished in my years and I’m proud of the progression of the U.S. team and wish them all the best in the future.”

“It has been an immense privilege working with the athletes, grooms, owners and staff to ultimately see the U.S. Eventing Team deliver their best results in over a decade,” Jenni said. “I wish all involved with U.S. Eventing the very best and look forward to what the future brings.”

US Equestrian has confirmed they will not be releasing an official statement on this matter, but provided the following quote: “Erik Duvander’s contract expired on November 30, 2021 and will not be renewed. The program structure and plans for the future will be forthcoming.”

Thursday Video: ‘No Gift Greater’ Horseware Christmas Film

We look forward to Horseware’s annual Christmas film with as much anticipation as we do a Super Bowl Budweiser Clydesdale commercial (which, just when the world needed it the most, didn’t happen in 2021 — bring it back for 2022, Budweiser, please!)

This holiday season, Horseware tells the story of Luca, an Irish Connemara pony, and Sarah, an inquisitive schoolgirl: “From a chance meeting to a blossoming friendship, day by day we see Sarah and Luca earn each other’s trust and build a special bond that cannot be broken – the most precious gift of all.”

Sound-Off: What Do YOU Want For the Future of US Eventing Young Rider Championships?

Say hello to your 2021 Adequan®/ #USAEventing Youth Team Challenge East Coast Final Champions 😍

Posted by USA Eventing on Monday, November 15, 2021

It’s back to the drawing board for young eventing athletes, who saw a shake up in 2021 with the former North American Youth Championships (NAYC) being replaced by this year’s Adequan USEF Youth Team Challenge. The series consisted of four CCI-S competitions on the East Coast and one on the West Coast, with finals held at Tryon International and Galway Downs respectively in November. Teams and individuals competed for titles in CCI1*, CCI2*-L, and CCI3*-L divisions.

To recap, the evolution came about after the NAYC repeatedly encountered difficulty fielding international teams, and was also an effort to more closely align the Young Rider program with the USEF Eventing Pathway Program. Ultimately, though, the one-year experiment didn’t yield the results hoped for. As US Equestrian shared yesterday:

“The USEF Youth Team Challenge Task Force recently evaluated the 2021 Youth Team Challenge program. Feedback was taken into consideration from Area Coordinators and athletes. Due to the limited participation at the short-format legs, the Task Force recommended altering the program to one championship, the USEF Young Rider Eventing National Championship. The program proposal received approval from the Eventing Sport Committee, International Disciplines Committee, and the USEF Board of Directors.

“The bid process to determine the host for the 2022 Championship opened on November 30, 2021, and ends December 14, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. EST. USEF seeks one host for the CCI1*-L, CCI2*-L, and CCI3*-L levels. Three National Championship titles will be awarded. USEF is in search of a venue to host this between September and November.

“Complete bid applications and supporting documentation must be submitted by the deadline to be considered.

“For more information, visit the USEF Eventing Calendar website here. Inquiries can be directed to Christina Vaughn, Director of Eventing Performance & Program Support, at [email protected].”

EN, what are your thoughts? What is the best path forward for supporting U25 eventing athletes with a goal of one day representing their area and, perhaps, ultimately even their country? If the U.S. is to host one championship in 2022, where would you most want it to be held?

Volunteer Nation: Four Events That Could Use a Helping Hand This Weekend

Photo by Mia Kuntze Photography via the Maryland Horse Trials @ Loch Moy Farm FB Page.

Giving shouldn’t just be limited to #GivingTuesday — let’s make it last year round! There are so many ways to support our sport, volunteering among them. And we love to see the eventing community supporting the larger community as well, such as with this weekend’s MDHT Donation Derby at Loch Moy Farm in Adamstown, MD.

This beneficiary of the 2021 event is METS (Maryland Equine Transition Service), a statewide equine safety net initiative of the Maryland Horse Council Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, that provides safe alternatives for horses needing homes by helping owners identify and select the best transition options for their horses. METS provides equine assessment, marketing services and applicant screening to help make the best match between horses and new homes. They also provide assistance to owners in need of end-of-life assistance when rehoming is not an option.

Besides donating a portion of each entry to METS, there are other ways that you can donate. Stop by their booth near the office with information, donation options, and swag for sale, or you can donate directly online here.

Here are four events that could use a helping hand this weekend. As always, you can earn merit points when you donate your time through the USEA’s Volunteer Incentive Program. Registering to volunteer through EventingVolunteers.com makes it easy and seamless to both find a job and shift as well as learn what your role will entail.

December?! It’s December already. HOW?!?! If 2020 was the slowest year in the world, 2021 seems to have gone by in a total flash. I feel like yesterday it was March, and now it’s almost the holiday season, which means next time I blink, it will be 2022 and I’ll be filling out all of my checks incorrectly for a few months. Everyone is heading down south earlier and earlier every year, so Virginia is starting to feel a bit quiet, and I am excited next spring for the action to start back up!

News From Around the Globe:

An Andalusian might not be your first pick when selecting an eventing prospect, but Romeo has proven to be a very successful one. Eventing is a discipline well-known for being inclusive of many unique and unfamiliar breeds. While dressage and show jumping tend to favor warmbloods and various western disciplines feel the same with the quarter horse, event riders are famous for competing on horses of different breeds and varying ages. Since the discipline asks so many individual questions, it seems to be an area where there is no stigma on what horse you ride in on. One such horse is a 9-year-old Andalusian PRE gelding named Romeo. [A Breed Apart]

Is your horse getting a little wild on cross country? Maybe you’ve got an OTTB, or even just a very enthusiastic warmblood, but we’ve all ridden horses that get strong at the gallop in various situations, but outside of exercising at the track, it’s hard to figure out the right way to handle it. Luckily for you, we’ve got some excellent tips on how to control and communicate with your horse at the gallop. [Control a Galloping Horse]

Ready for your weekend horse entertainment? Appalachia Last Chance Rescue is a docuseries that features the Heart of Phoenix as they prepare for their annual training challenge event. The West Virginia based equine rescue group organizes the ATFO each year to help solve the problem of abused and neglected horses in the severely economically challenged regions of Appalachia and beyond. Equal parts harrowing and hopeful, this series closely follows the group’s progress as they take in horses found in heartbreaking conditions, while working to gain their trust as well as restore their health. Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Landing Rails with Cathy Wieschhoff

In her latest “One Minute With Cathy” video, five-star rider/course designer Cathy Wieschhoff shares how to utilize a landing pole to encourage horses to put down their landing gear, so to speak.

She explains, “Many times riders are not comfortable with place rail in front of the jump, but a landing rail 9-11 feet on the landing of a jump will allow the rider to be comfortable in front but not allow the horse to overjump and unseating the rider. This of course is for small jumps!”

Perfect Petey – YEH ready for 5yo year

Perfect Petey is ready to find his perfect person, and bring more smiles to the people around him. Resurgent (Sky Mesa – Galloping Ami) is a stunning 2017 TB gelding who was the highest priced Sky Mesa to ever sell. Standing at 16.1hh, he is impeccably bred, raced lightly, and then retired sound before journeying into sport horse land in spring of 2021. Petey has competed in a handful of recognized events and YEH qualifiers, and never finished worse than 4th at a YEH qualifier, stacking up against some of the top warmbloods in this country. He is ready to run novice, and will be moving up in just a few weeks time.

Easy to flat with a massive canter, and point and shoot to fences with scope to spare, Petey would be best suited to a competent YR or amateur, or could go up the levels in a professional program wanting more. Hacks out in a group or alone, same off property as he is on, and has extensively traveled around the east coast – competed at places such as KHP, Chatt Hills, VHP, and Fair Hill.

2016 15.3H OTTB Mare by Fed Biz out of Woodland Sprite (Grand Sire is Giant’s Causeway)

“Aspen” is a total sweetheart who was purchased as an event prospect. She is brave, smart, and a scopey jumper. She has been in professional training since 2019, loving every minute of her new job, and would clearly excel as an event horse. She requires a confident rider since she is still green, but she shows a lot of promise and will progress quickly with a confident rider. Extremely sweet on the ground, not at all mareish, and she truly loves her people. A good home is a must.

$8500 OBO

Please contact Lainey at (804) 301-5888 to indicate interest.

Slick Moves, FEI and Prelim 2014, 16.3 Thoroughbred Gelding

Zuko has all the makings of a horse that will reach the top level of sport. At 7, he has experience at prelim, multiple top 5 placings at training level, and top 5 at CCI*L. He has been an absolute joy to help produce. This horse will be someone’s career maker.

He has beautiful fluid gates, and a canter to die for. Zuko is a very competitive and consistent horse. He is brave XC, and careful in SJ. He has no disobedience or vices. And he is a joy to be around and travel with. He is suitable for a young rider looking for their first superstar, and he has the talent for a professional looking for an upper level mount to add to their string.

Zuko’s 2021 achievements include:
2nd Middleburg OT
4th Area II Championships OT
9th Waredaca OP
5th VAHT CCI* L

Zuko is now qualified for CCI** S and ready to make someone’s dreams come true for the 2022 season.

Your Next Best Friend!

Mr. Barron
Aka Ronnie

2008 OTTB 16.1hh Two-star Eventing machine. Looks for the flags and goes! Three elegant gates, dressage scores in the low 30s and an excellent counter canter. Safe, clear and fast on cross country. Ridden and competed by an adult amateur his eventing career with many ribbons including qualifying for AECs the last four years. Suitable for AA, Jr. or Pro. Hacks out alone or with buddies. Travels well. Very sweet guy that loves to cuddle. Only selling him because of his potential. Always sound and healthy. No Vices. Mr. Barron is ready to move up to Intermediate or take his next person up the levels. Ronnie is very quiet and relaxed at home, occasionally giving beginner lessons. He would benefit in a program that has regular stadium jumping practice. He is rideable even after sitting in a stall for a few days. He wakes up at shows but doesn’t need lunging or pre-rides to perform well. He is all go for cross-country with only one stop in 35 starts. Ronnie is a lighter build TB which has proven to keep him sound for six years of heavy conditioning and competing. Straight-forward, tough and uncomplicated feet. He is quiet in his stall and in the pasture. He does appreciate regular turn-out, preferably on grass. Ronnie is the sweetest horse I have owned. I would love to see him go to a home that would appreciate and love him.

Training packer ready to move up

2011 OTTB 17.2+ hh mare (JC name Affirmed Coed)

Sire: Prefer; Dam: Hopeful Coed; USEA Horse ID 201088

8 Training level competitions at recognized shows with no XC jump penalties

1st place at Texas Rose and 2nd place at Heritage Park in 2019 (Training level)

Selling because I realized I don’t have the bandwidth to compete two horses while working a full-time job with a commute. Mal has not been competed in ~1 year because I moved and am building out a new barn/facility. Had planned to move her up to Preliminary level before COVID hit and before I moved. Then life happened.

Mal has excellent ground manners. Clips/ties/trailers. Can hop on her from just about any object (necessary as she’s a tall girl!). Will carefully jump anything you point her at.

XC is her strength. She’s ready to pack a young person up through the levels or for an AA to move up to Prelim/Intermediate. Could also see her excelling in the Hunter ring.

Videos are of Mal running XC a year ago and packing around a beginner a few weeks ago.

Price negotiable to an excellent home.

Sale or lease on versatile 2015 TB gelding

Churro is a 2015, 16h2 OTTB gelding. He truly is a stunner, but his best attribute is his brain! This is the smartest, most quiet horse in the barn, yet he is a forward, sensible ride. He is the same wether he is ridden 5x a week or has had a month off, hop on and ride! He is the same at shows as he is at home.

He is easy for everything : vet, farrier, trailer, clip, trail rides alone or in group, you name it he does it.

Churro has lots of experience eventing up to Novice (Pre-Training) level, he is schooling Training level with ease. Always in the top 3 after dressage with scores as low as 25. Very consistent and well schooled on the flat, he could have a career in straight dressage easily. Has a spotless record on xc, this horse loves to jump and is very brave. Could also become a show jumper or probably even a hunter with the proper training. He is so trainable that you can direct him any way that you want!

Not an UL (Prelim +) horse due to a mild heart murmur. Full report available. Has been cleared to keep his current exercise level and has shown no limitations in that lifestyle.

For sale, lease or lease to own. Priced in CAD$

Honest and correct 12 yo training level OTTB gelding

Fire For Effect (JC Aristarchus), Arty, is a sound and dependable 2009 15.3 hand OTTB gelding. Recently finishing 9th in the training division at AECs, Arty is the kindest and most hardworking horse I’ve ever had the pleasure of riding. I purchased Arty directly off the track in 2017 and he has remained my personal horse. He has accumulated an expansive and clean record through training level including the Retired Racehorse Project and American Eventing Championships. Arty consistently scores in the low 30s and has never had a jump penalty on cross country.

Arty would be best suited for an eager teenager or adult amateur looking for a dependable, but forward thinking mount. Arty is quiet enough for a beginner at home, but is forward and game at shows. He is a solid citizen; no vices, extremely well mannered, stands for the farrier, clipping, bathing, mane pulling, etc. He is kind in the pasture, quiet in the stall, and an overall easy keeper. Loads easily and hauls quietly. He truly checks all of the boxes.

Arty is proficient at second level movements and schooling prelim fences. He is very honest on course and deserves a rider that won’t take advantage of his eagerness to please. While Arty could take the right rider up to prelim, I believe he would be best suited running training and below.

With 23 career starts on the track, Arty has proven to be a sound athlete. He has correct conformation, plenty of bone, solid feet, and requires little maintenance.

I am willing to wait for the perfect, loving home for Arty. With a young daughter and a full time career, I simply do not have the time to give Arty the riding opportunities he loves and deserves. Serious, adult inquiries only. While I am happy to share current radiographs and exams, any further PPE will be at buyers expense. $30k. Located in Ball Ground, Ga. USEF Crowns 2021 Youth Team Challenge Champions Ahead of Major Change to Series

Chloe Johnson and Chilli Bean. Photo by Leslie Potter/US Equestrian.

With last month’s West Coast Final in Temecula, California well in the rearview, US Equestrian has crowned its 2021 overall champions in the Adequan/USEF Eventing Youth Team Challenge series, which aims to provide the country’s stars of the future with valuable opportunities to gain team mileage and ride under pressure. This year, we’ve seen eight legs throughout the season at events around the country, which have hosted classes at CCI1*, CCI2*, and CCI3*.

This year’s overall CCI1* Champion is Chloe Johnson, who lives in Dallas, Texas, and represents Area V with her spring-heeled New Zealand Sport Horse mare Chilli Bean (Chilli Morning x Curtain Call). While en route to total domination as an individual, she also played a valuable part in her team, which was made up of riders from several areas and ultimately took second place.

“It was a wonderful experience to be on a team with such supportive people,” Chloe says. “While Area V didn’t have our own team in the 1*, everyone else from Area V encouraged each other and helped each other out in the barn. Our combined area 1* team allowed me to meet new, incredibly nice people from areas other than Area V that I may not have had the chance to meet otherwise.”

Rebecca Roth and Chapter Two. Photo by Leslie Potter/US Equestrian.

The overall CCI2* title goes to Rebecca Roth of Malone, Wisconsin, who piloted the Thoroughbred gelding Chapter Two (More Than Ready x Winds of March) to the top spot, helping her area IV team to second place in the process. This adds another title to the pair’s collection — they were the Area IV Preliminary Champions in 2020.

Audrey Sanborn and OBOS Quality Time. Photo by Tina Fitch Photography.

Finally, Area VI rider Audrey Sanborn proved the increasing strength in depth of the West Coast scene, taking the overall CCI3* top honours with her Irish Sport Horse gelding OBOS Quality Time (OBOS Quality 004 x Diamond DI). Though the San Luis Obispo-based rider’s team didn’t finish on the podium this year, they’ve got plenty to be excited about for the seasons to come.

Area II riders swept the boards in the team rankings, taking the win at all three levels.

This will be the last time we see the Youth Team Challenge program in this format, however: following extensive feedback from Area Coordinators and athletes, the USEF Youth Team Challenge Task Force opted to propose a singular championship, which would combat issues of low participation at some legs. The proposal was approved by the Eventing Sport Committee, the International Disciplines Committee, and the USEF Board of Directors, and bidding opened yesterday for prospective hosts of the new championship, which will host the CCI1*-L, CCI2*-L, and CCI3*-L championship in the latter part of the season. We’ll be sharing more information on the bids soon, but in the meantime, inquiries can be directed to Christina Vaugh, Director of Eventing and Program Support, at [email protected].
