#EventerProblems Vol. 201, Presented by Haygain: Drop Your Stirrups

November? How about NO! vember. Daylight Saving time ending on day three of No Stirrup November feels like a cruel twist of fate because we know you faithful eventers will be out there with your legs burning in the dwindling twilight hours no matter the physical (or emotional?) toll required. The good news is your kind of crazy isn’t alone, as evidenced from the latest collection of #EventerProblems:

My coach was up yesterday but I was due to be away all day, so I’d asked him to give Wally a jump for me. Luckily I made it back just in time to see him pinging round 1m20+ and even had a little (very little) jump myself at the end. Probably the most inappropriately dressed rider and I don’t think Wally approved🤣 . . Have a great Monday everyone, it is STILL raining here and is officially the start of winter take in ☹️ . . . . . . . #showjumper #training #eventer #eventerinthemaking #eventersofinstagram #eventersdoitbetter #eventerproblems #irishdraught #fedontopspec #irishthoroughbred #bay #baygelding #thebestbay #baybaycakes #scottishlife #countrylife #countryblogger #countrylifestyle #horsesofinstagram #showjumping

Mara DePuy and Congo Brazzaville C. Photo by Abby Powell.

Plot twist: after a disappointing — and wet — end to their strike at winning the Fair Hill International CCI4*-L, Mara DePuy set Congo Brazzaville C out to the field to enjoy a holiday, but turns out he wasn’t quite finished. After evaluation, her team has decided he’s game for the upcoming four-star at Ocala Jockey Club. I smell redemption.

From Mara:  “After a disappointing ending to what was one of our best cross country rounds at Fair Hill. Congo was turned out for his holiday, and made it very clear that he didn’t want his season to end on that note. After seeing Congo’s behavior, consulting with our team, and a cross country school with Phillip Dutton, there is a late addition to the fall calendar. Mara and Congo will head to Ocala to contest the CCI4* at the Jockey Club.”

Fernhill Fugitive Intermediate XC Helmet Cam VAHT 2019

Ride around the Intermediate XC course with Mr. Jack-in-the-box and I in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains at Virginia Horse Trials! 🏔I left in the 45 seconds before leaving the start box because Jack is just SO FREAKING ADORABLE! This horse was bouncing up and down, about 4 inches off the ground, in place, wanting to leave the start box. I am so happy that I can be a part of this horse's absolute love for the sport. Honestly, nothing made me happier than feeling how excited he was to head out on XC. That is the best feeling in the world, to see how much your horse loves his job. 🏇♥And yes, Jack and I went out while there was still frost on the ground! That was a first for me! We were the 3rd pair to head out of the start box that morning. While I was in the warm-up, I heard the announcers state that "the jump judges are all in position, and the ice has been broken out of the water complexes". 😱❄🧊The only thing I could think of at that point was "Dear God, please don't let me fall off in the water complexes…" 🙈🤣We took our time around the course, I just wanted a clear round on our first Intermediate to end the year, plus Jack's fitness isn't up to par since he's dealt with hoof soreness issues all summer. So thrilled to have our first Intermediate under our belts! I'm sure we'll be rocking around them consistently next year! 😁

That was Michael Willham’s last thought before he left the start box with Fernhill Fugitive at Virginia Horse Trials. They were the third pair to tackle the Intermediate course on a morning so chilly that frost dusted the rolling hills of the Virginia Horse Center. Take a look at their lovely ride from Michael’s point of view.

Tuesday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

Sarah Greer and Chris Gable have served as the event’s organizers for all 25 years. Photo by Brant Gamma.

We are sad to say goodbye to South Farm Horse Trials as they announced this weekend that they will no longer host recognized or mini horse trials. The 110-acre facility in Middlefield, Ohio was a staple on the eventing calendar for 25 years, a milestone they reached over the summer. Event Organizers Sarah Greer and Chris Gable poured their all into this effort for every single one of those years. To them, and all those who supported this event, thank you.

From South Farm:

“After a tremendous amount of consideration, we are announcing today that we will no longer host our USEA recognized Horse Trial or our NEOMTA Mini Trials. We want to thank all the competitors, trainers, parents, officials, vendors, but especially the volunteers. Some of you have been on this ride with us for 25 years, and from the bottom of our hearts we thank you. Some of the names are Helen Mcauley, Karen and John Heinson, Kim Novak, Garrett Gable, Pam Hebling, Alicia Cherry, Samantha and Amanda Bonath, Myra Buczek, Deb and Ken Barna, Chris Kennedy, Michael and Jane Soltis, Jan Dieterle, Teresa Sondles, Connie Wyatt, Sue Dolenc, Cori Garcia, John Williams, Angela Haaz, and many, many more.

“It is impossible to list everyone that we have relied on over the years. It was an honor and a privilege to have you devote time and energy in support of us running our events at South Farm. It has been an amazing journey and we feel fortunate for the many friendships and family we have made along the way. We will still host our Winter Jumper Series, Combined Tests, Up and Over hunter jumper shows, offer cross country schooling, clinics and Pony Club functions.”

Lynnleigh Farm in Sandy, Utah has quite the sense of humor–as seen from their warning in the barn bathroom. According to Martha Mitchell,  “We would rather spend our money on horses than a new septic system.”

Said like a true eventer! Because who doesn’t enjoy pouring all your energy and financial assets into a 1,500-pound creature with a mind of its own and a clear dislike of dressage, as evidenced in this latest batch of #EventerProblems:

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to end my Fair Hill run at a single galloping fence early on course. Barry's jump finally got the best of me and sent me flying straight out of the tack at Fence 6 at the apparently well named "Sneaky Snake". On my way down to this fence I saw a bit of a long one and Barry saw the opposite. This led to him chipping in and then being the very careful horse that he is he put in a huge effort to clear it. He then proceeded to levitate straight up in the air and sent me flying even higher. While I was up there I went through all the ways I could try to stick this landing but unfortunately couldn't make it happen. Before I knew it I was on the ground with a deployed air vest and my horse was galloping off with his tail straight up in the air. This was a very silly thing to have happened and I am obviously disappointed but also grateful we are both just fine. We will be rerouting to Ocala and I might be investing in some sticky spray. I appreciate everyone who reached out to make sure I was ok. Also, huge thanks to my whole support crew for all of their help and always believing in me and Barry. ❤ P.S. If anyone got a picture of the unfortunate parting of ways I'd be very interested in seeing how it exactly went down for learning and entertainment purposes. #eventerproblems #bouncingbarry #eventing #eventersofinstagram

Olivia Dutton shows off Icabad Crane’s last show ribbon. Photo via the Icabad Crane Facebook Page.

A true athlete and a total legend, Icabad Crane has been retired from competition. He spent the first six years of his career on the racetrack, making appearances in such prestigious races as The Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Retired from the track in 2013, he then transitioned to eventing with Phillip Dutton where he was named America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred in 2014.

From his team:

“Icabad Crane has been formally retired from competing. He went out a winner last weekend with Olivia. He will remain part of the Dutton family for as long as they please and will want for nothing.

“He has enriched all of our lives by being the most amenable, accommodating , ambassador for everything that we have asked of him. He owes us nothing and we owe him everything.

3:55 What a day! With flag penalties being awarded at the end of the day, the leaderboard took on a new look. Here’s your top five:

3:51 Now getting reports that both Phillip Dutton and Doug Payne have been awarded 15 penalties for missing a flag on course. That opens the door for Waylon Roberts to move into the lead.

3:50 So sad to see buck have a run out at the sunken road. This was where he fell earlier with Jak My Style. They go clear over the option.

3:50 Buck is clear through the area, but they look like they’ve lost a bit of steam.

3:49 Allison gives Business Ben a clear round, and we wait to hear her time. Now Buck is the sole rider left on course.

3:47 Allison also takes the longer option at the red corners to ensure a clear round with Business Ben.

3:43 After having trouble at the coffin earlier this morning on her first horse, Allison opts to take the option at 13.

3:42 Our very last ride of the day, Buck Davidson and Erroll Gobey, have gone out on course.

3:40 Allison Springer and Business Ben are clear through 8. Coming home inside the time would put her in fourth.

3:36 Phillip and Z are finished clear inside the time which puts them in the lead! They had one questionable moment over the red corners where the flag could be in question, but we’ve heard no word of an issue so far.

3:33

3:29 Big Phil and Z are cruising. They’re clear through 10.

3:22

3:19 Waylon Roberts has finished clear, and takes over the lead! We’ve got two to go until Phillip Dutton and Z who are the only pair left who could do better.

3:16 Waylon Roberts and Lancaster are clear through the arena. To stay in front of Doug, they can be no slower than 3.5 seconds over the time.

3:15 Mike Pendleton and Steady Eddie have made it all the way around with no jumping penalties. This is Mike’s first four-star long.

3:12 Foot perfect round by Doug Payne and Vandiver! They come home clear nine seconds inside the time.

3:08 Mia Farley comes home inside the time!

3:06 Doug and “Quinn” go clear through the coffin. I think word has really gotten around the barn about how to best ride this tricky combination.

3:01 MGS Firecracker is full of running today for Mia Farley.

3:00 Drumroll, please. Doug Payne and Vandiver are circling the box.

2:57 Jenny Caras and Fernhill Fortitude are clear through the first two fields.

2:56 Liza has fallen off at fence 15, which is an open oxer up behind the main VIP tent.

2:52 Liza Horan and Lafite make the four strides between 7a and 7b. Liza has already had one clear round in the three-star this morning.

2:49 Still to come are four riders who could take the lead if they go clear with little to no jump penalties: Phillip Dutton/Z, Waylon Roberts/Lancaster, Doug Payne/Vandiver, and Allison Springer/Business Ben.

2:47

2:46 Caitlin Henderson and Creative Dreamer are out on course, and we’re in the last hour of competition.

2:45 Sara Gumbiner and Polaris make easy work of the angled tables in the main arena.

2:42 Sydney Conley Elliot and QC Diamantaire are nearly done with a clear round. Positive riding all the way.

2:36 no! So close to the finish Mara falls in the water at the final complex. Hard to see exactly what happened over the duck int he water.

2:35 Mara goes the long route at the red corners. She had to use quite a bit of time to communicate where they were going, so hopefully not too much time wasted.

2:31 Even with a less than ideal jump over the ditch, Congo sails straight as an arrow over the corner element at C.

2:29 Mara and Congo looking so bold. They’re clear through 9.

2:26 Overnight leader alert! Mara dePuy and Congo Brazzaville are on course.

2:20 Oh dear Buck Davidson has an unexpected dismount from Jak My Style. Buck made it over the B element at the sunken road, but Jak didn’t quite.

2:19 Emma heads for a strong finish.

2:15 We’re seeing a time now for Meghan O’Donoghue and Palm Crescent. They were clear inside the time.

2:13 Emma Lomangino and Master Frisky are clear through 9.

2:11 Oh no Fylicia comes off at the coffin. She just didn’t get there exactly like she would’ve wanted.

2:07 Lynn and Pippy are home. Scores reflecting they picked up 20 penalties on course, but no word yet on where. That error wasn’t shown on the live stream.

2:06 We’re seeing really confident riding from Meghan O’Donoghue and Fylicia Barr on course now.

2:02 Lynn is clear through the coffin.

1:59 And another one unfortunately. Colleen Rutledge adds 20 penalties at the C element at the coffin.

1:55 Important ride on course now. Third-placed Colleen Rutledge and Covert Rights go in the more forward 4 strides at fence 7.

1:52 Meg Kep finishes her first four-star long clear!

1:45 Meg Kepferle goes direct and clear at the coffin. Excellent ride.

1:40 Loving this ride by Erin Sylvester and Paddy the Caddy.

1:39 Lauren Billys opts for the long route at 13. She’s really gunning for a clear round here as she aims for securing and individual spot in the 2020 Olympic Games. In order to do that, she must be the leading rider (by FEI points) in her region, so every completion counts.

1:37 Clark has a second stop in at the B element in the main arena. He’s clear on second attempt and continuing.

1:37: A few more zingers from Jimmy:

“Theres only three types of people: those who can count strides and those who can’t”

“If you go fast enough they (your horse) can’t pull”

1:35 Clark Montgomery and Caribbean Soul have a disappointing stop at the corner after the coffin at 13c. Super frustrating this mare had it in her to make the time.

1:30 Jennie Brannigan was absolutely fighting for it at the coffin with Twilightslastgleam, but a lost stirrup and an awkward jump has her falling on landing. Such a bummer.

1:25 I am living for Jimmy Wofford on the live stream. He’s full of top quotes just right at the top of his head. Here’s some examples:

“Competition makes good athletes better and bad athletes worse.”

“Fatigue makes cowards of us all”

1:25 Will Coleman nails the first double clear of this division. Well done for him and this 9-year-old in his first four-star.

1:23 Lauren Kieffer and D.A. Duras gets it done at the tricky coffin.

1:22 Will Coleman responds quickly to a little bobble at the first red corner. He reroutes for the option.

1:20 Sadly a third refusal and elimination for Allison at the skinny chevron at 23b. The horse just got a bit tired and didn’t quite have the adjustability.

1:20 Allison picks up a second runout at the B element of the red Fair Hill corners.

1:19

1:17 Lauren Kieffer and D.A. Duras just left the box like a rocket! Let’s keep an eye on her time.

1:14 Arg. 13 C claims another victim: Allison Springer and Sapphire Blue B

1:12 Time penalties coming in now. Clayton finished with 17.2 added. Phillip Dutton added 4.8 with Fernhill Singapore, so I would believe he’ll cut that down further with Z.

1:11: Allison Springer is giving Sapphire Blue B a very confident start to the gelding’s first four-star long.

1:10 Will Faudree and Michel 233 have a run out at the C element of the coffin at 13. I think this one will continue to be influential today.

1:09 Jessie has a fight a bit to keep Watson GS going positively forward, but she gets it all done. This green horse has just gained mountains of experience.

1:03 Jessica Phoenix and Watson GS are seeing smooth sailing around so far. They’re through headed toward 20 after taking the long route at 19.

1:00

12:56 Clayton will be frustrated with those 11 penalties, but he’s gotten FE Stormtrooper clear around the rest of the course.

12:55 Nilson has retired at fence 13, the coffin. He opted to take the long route, but they had a run at at the option element before calling it a day.

12:54 Phillip Dutton and Fernhill Singapore are out on course. This will be a crucial exploratory mission before Phillip goes again with second-placed Z.

12:53 Clayton activated the frangible pin on the back rail at fence 15, an open oxer.

12:51 A big sigh of relief just echoed across the rider tent as Clayton makes easy work of the beefy coffin at 13.

12:49 Nilson Moreira da Silva and Cash have set out on Derek di Grazia’s track.

12:48 Clayton through one of the first major combinations in the woods at 7abc. There’s been some discussion on the distances here, and he’s done a happy five.

12:46 Here we go! Clayton is off and away.

12 p.m. Here’s what competitors are up against this afternoon:

The final team spot in the 2020 Olympic Games was on the line last weekend at Boekelo, and three countries went neck to neck for it. Edging just ahead by a razor thin margin was Swiss team of Robin Godel and Grandeur de Lully CH, Caroline Gerber and Tresor de Chignan CH, and Tiziana Realini and Toubleau du Rueire. And just like that, teams are set and we close in on another Olympic season.

Go Switzerland. Go eventing.

Tuesday News:

Our thoughts continue to be with French rider Thibault Fournier, who is in a coma after suffering a serious fall at an event in Pompadour, France over the weekend. 24-year-old Thibault memorably won Pau CCI5*-L last year in his first attempt at the level. His family posted to Facebook yesterday: “Thibault thanks you all for your support and your friendly thoughts. He can’t do it himself because he’s in a deep coma. He is in good hands and fights as usual to come back to your side. He still has so much to tell you, so much love, advice and attention to you.” [Thibault Fournier Eventing]

Horse owners can breathe a sigh of relief as they’ve officially gotten the green light for equine travel in the event of a no-deal Brexit on October 31. EU members granted the UK listed status, which recognizes high biosecurity and animal health standards. In Memory of Melanie Tallent

We are extremely sad to report that Area II eventer Dr. Melanie Tallent passed away Friday, October 11, 2019 due to a traumatic brain injury sustained in a horse related fall the week before.

Melanie was a neuroscientist. She and her husband Gordon Lutz together co-founded the company LifeSplice Pharma, a biotech firm that develops RNA-based drugs to treat neurological disorders. In her field, she was well known for her work in the epilepsy research.

Melanie’s life was made sweeter through her connection with horses, especially her own Gadwall, a dutch harness horse, and Dunlin, a Paint/Percheron. Through her riding career, she embraced her educational opportunities to learn and grow her craft, and many friends have shared fond memories of her contagious work ethic. She also carved time to give back to the animals and sport she loved through volunteering with local events and with CANTER.

Today I lost my amazing friend and long time client, Melanie Tallent, to a TBI from a fall a week ago. Looking back, I realize Mel probably didn’t take lessons with me every single week on her horses because she thought she needed lessons from a Grand Prix Dressage rider for lower level eventing. I think she did that to support me so I could be successful. I am going to miss teaching her and riding her fabulous horses every week, but most of all her jokes and her incredible support. I am so devastated and heartbroken. I am going to keep living my life boldly like she did and as she would want me to. Miss and love you Mel 💔

“Melanie Tallent was one of the most genuine, kind hearted people I have ever met. She deeply cared for and loved her horses; her work ethic, passion for the sport, and tenderness shone through her interactions across friends, family and fellow eventers,” said Sara Gumbiner, who was a friend and coach to Melanie.

“Melanie was an outspoken advocate for human rights, and along side her husband, Gordon, was working on developing treatment options for neurologic disease and brain injury. Her passing has left a void in my heart, a place in my soul that was filled with the presence of strong woman, and close friend. I am blessed that she was a part of my life, the past 10 years has brought me great joy, and fulfillment in my work, to watch her grow with her horses as a team, the effort she poured into science and advocated for the respect and dignity of people: always seeking continual improvement.”

On behalf of the eventing community, we extend our deepest condolences to Melanie’s friends and family.
