Lot’s of hacking trotting and accomplishing off season homework. It won’t be too long before it’s all heating back up again, especially for those of us in Area III!

The new electronic logging device mandate on agricultural transportation recently rocked the horse transportation industry. Designed to keep drivers safe and alert, this meant to measures to be in place for hauling horses. Boyfriend takes on his first hack. Photo by Jaime Giunta.

After years of complete disorganization on my part, I finally took my non-horsey boyfriend out for his first ride this weekend. He’s very comfortable around horses on the ground – in fact he’s Chief Horse Holder at competitions, but he hasn’t had much time ever in the saddle. Once he learned how to steer, he did excellent. He even learned how to post the trot! His biggest takeaway is more a wonder and amazement at professional male riders.

The carriage industry in New York City may face big changes next year. An animal rights group expects a carriage-horse bill by early 2018, which would keep the number of carriage horses steady at 196 and force increases in stall size. It would also limit horse’s work weeks to five days, down from seven, and horses would be saved from slaughter after a mandatory age-based retirement. EN’s 12 Days of Christmas: Book Lover’s Prize Pack from Trafalgar Square Books

Photos courtesy of Trafalgar Square Books.

Day five of EN’s 12 Days of Christmas is for all you book worms out there. We see you – the scholars of the sport. You pour carefully through your idol’s recounting of training and teaching philosophies, hanging on every last word.

While you may not get the chance to ride with each of the world’s top riders, you can get an in depth look at their training philosophies through their publications. Does this description sound familiar? Then we have a treat for you!

Today’s prize comes to us from Trafalgar Square Books – the leading publisher of equestrian books. They’ve lined up four books to fuel your winter training and beyond: Horses Came First, Second, and Last by Jack Le Goff with Jo Whitehouse, Fit and Focused in 52 by Daniel Stewart, Training Horses the Ingrid Klimke Way by Ingrid Klimke, and Sport Horse Soundness and Performance by Dr. Cecilia Lönnell.

Jack Le Goff has been known for years as the one of the most iconic coaches in eventing. He set the standard for success not only in the U.S. but around the world. He discloses all in this long-awaited autobiography you don’t want to miss.

Want to strengthen your mental game while also upping your own fitness? Coach Daniel Stewart’s Fit & Focused in 52 is your next read.  This book will structure each week of the next year with unique cross training ideas to give your New Year’s Resolution some direction.

Olympic gold medalist Ingrid Klimke knows more than a thing or two about bringing horses up through the ranks, and there’s a reason the hashtag #BeLikeIngrid  gets shared so much, because we literally want to Be. Like. Ingrid. Now we can at least try with her book, Training Horses The Ingrid Klimke Way.

While training is important, it’s nothing without proper maintenance of your horse. Dr. Cecilia Lönnell combines her veterinary background and hands on experience to craft somewhat of an instruction manual on how you can make it easier for your horse to perform optimally in her own Sport Horse Soundess and Performance.

Photo by M.J. Redding Equine Transport.

I came across this lovely post from M.J. Redding Equine Transport, one of the many groups who have jumped in head first to transport and evacuate horses threatened by California wildfires last week. Here’s an excerpt, and you can see their full post here.

“This is the horse world. This single image captures the very stitch work that binds together a truly amazing community. A community of men and women who have come to accept and often appreciate the cliché ‘crazy horse people.’ It is a world entirely comprised of individuals who willfully sacrifice family vacations, weekends, or even the single day off occasionally. There is bond between horse and horsemen that inherently sears a brand into who we are, and how we live. 365 days we put ourselves second to our horses, with routines dedicated to the wellbeing of our horses beginning well before the light of day, and consistently ending well after nightfall. Individuals who carry no hesitation in their breath whether it be sleepless nights to ensure a mare in foal is safe during labor at any hour of the day or an entire day’s plan is thrown aside the moment a horse is injured. Men and women who for 365 long days find themselves rushing breakfast, eating lunch from the seat of a tractor only to still miss dinner, cancel Saturday night dates, and miss birthdays.”

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: First Helmet Cam of the 2018 Season

As December 1 rolled around that meant we are officially in the 2018 season! Sporting Days H.T. in Aiken, S.C. lead the charge into the new calendar with their horse trials last weekend.

While eventers will now enjoy a bit of a holiday, soak up the last bit of cross country action for a while with Fly With Me, a cheeky off-track Thoroughbred owned by Michelle and Madison Chisholm and ridden by Elisa Wallace.

I, personally, found comfort in hearing Elisa laugh off “Lear’s” spooky behavior and getting lost on the way to fence 6. Happens to the best of us!

The horses are from Adventure Clydesdale, which offers horse trail riding holidays through the beautiful landscapes of Dartmoor in Devon. This year’s winer was an 11-year-old Clydesdale named Siryl ridden by Bryony Frost who took a celebratory flying dismount following their success.

The Manx Man Euthanized After Cross Country Fall at Pine Top Thanksgiving H.T.

Avery Lewis and The Manx Man. Photo by Sarah Edwards.

We are heartbroken to report that Avery LewisThe Manx Man has been euthanized following a rotational fall at Pine Top Farm’s Thanksgiving H.T. Avery and “Toby” were competing in the Preliminary/Training division at the Thomson, Georgia venue when they both fell at fence 8, a log hogs back, on cross country.

Avery was transported to the hospital and was released without injury. Toby was transported to the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine where he was humanely euthanized due to injuries sustained in the fall.

Avery and the 16-year-old Thoroughbred gelding (Rock City x Queen’s Habbit) began competing together in 2016 before earning winning results at both Novice and Training level. Most recently they enjoyed a 19th place finish at the USEA American Eventing Championships.

The entire team at Eventing Nation sends our condolences to Avery and all who loved Toby.

Sunday Video: Mark Todd’s Newest Ride

Sir Mark Todd, you may have heard of him, double Olympic gold medalist, Rider of the 20th Century, multiple four-star winner, etc., he’s kind of a big deal. You might also recall that he’s rather tall – 6’3″ to be exact. So, that means some of his sizeable rides turn out looking like ponies. If you thought that juxtaposition was fun, you’re in luck because we’ve stumbled upon footage of Mark actually riding a pony.

They flat around an indoor as Mark works hard to balance atop the black and white wonder pony that he affectionately calls, “My new star for next season.” When someone suggests he takes one of the jumps, he first declines the offer with an assertive, “No way!” before humbly asks them to remove the top rail. Never be afraid to start small, even if you’re Mark Todd!

Go ponies. Go Eventing.

Safety, Philosophy & The Sport: A Chat with Badminton Course Designer Eric Winter

Eric Winter Photo by Samantha Clark

Eric Winter has designed some of the biggest, baddest courses in the world. He lead the charge at Blenheim Palace CCI3* for a decade before taking the reins over at the formidable Badminton Horse Trials CCI4* earlier this year. West coast riders became much more accustomed with his work this fall as he made his stateside debut at Galway Downs CCI3* earlier this month. We sat down with Eric for a chat about these venues, his philosophies and safety in the sport.

Eric on taking over at Badminton…

Eric Winter:It was always going to be difficult for a first year, but I thought we got some things really right, and some things I felt really settled in how I want to take Badminton forward. It’s a different site to anywhere else.”

On this year’s cross country result (The course had a 37% clear rate)…

Eric: “I think it was a bit over the top, but I almost wanted to start with that, being quite big. I want to get it so that people think that they bring cross country horses to badminton with mileage. They stop bringing 8-year-old horses that have average form hoping that it’s going to be a light year. I want them to think that Badminton is going to be consistently fairly up there. That they’re going to have to jump the Vicarage Vee or the footbridge which will be iconic fences that will stay in every year.”

The Vicarage Vee. Photo by Leslie Wylie.

On his course design philosophy…

Eric:Throughout all levels I want them to be able to handle terrain and be able to balance and organize. The riders should work as one with the horse. For me as a designer, I’m always very conscious in that move between three-star and four-star When I do a three-star track, I’m always looking at four-star and saying, ‘how does this develop horses to do that?’ Badminton is more of an exam of that as opposed to an educational process of that.”

On what his courses test…

Eric: “Balance and ability to ride off a feel as opposed to riding of a set pattern. I’m not a big fan of walking a distance and saying that’s a level 6 stride distance. I like them to say ‘My aim is to go on six, but actually if I get in a bit big I might go on this.’ So they develop for a feel for the way their horse goes.”

“Eventing, more than any other sport, is about the relationship between the horse and the rider and that’s what I want to try to develop in the education through all the levels I do. To develop that relationship, so when they get to Kentucky [CCI4*], they’re on it. They know what their horses are going to do they know how they’re going to react. They have that relationship with their horse that’s kind of symbiotic.”

On his safety objective as a course designer…

Eric: “Right fence, right place always. I think you can have some fences that work really well at the tail end of the course, or at the beginning of the course that don’t work so well if you put them somewhere else. I think the right fence in the right place is always the start point to me of safety.”

I’m quite big into the deformable technology – I use a lot of mims and a lot of clips – but in my ideal world we don’t break to many of those. If I’ve got the right fence in the right place then hopefully we’re not breaking lots of those.”

James Alliston and Happenstance taking on Eric’s CCI3* course at Galway Downs. Photo by Shelby Allen.

On rider responsibility…

Eric:It’s accepting that not all horses and not all riders are four-star or even three-star quality. I love the riders that say, ‘Actually, that’s my level I’m comfortable there. I don’t want to go above two-star.’ Because that’s a rider that recognizes their own limitation. It’s no good saying, ‘I want you to look after me. I’m going to ride at four-star, and I want to ride really badly, but I’ve got to be able to stand up.’ Because that puts your sport at a really untenable position. You cannot win from that point.”

“It’s like me saying, ‘Actually I don’t want to learn to drive, so I’m not going to learn to drive, but I do want to drive on the highway.’ When you drive on the highway, but you don’t learn to drive you put everyone at risk. It’s exactly the same thing in riding. When you aren’t good enough, and that’s not to say you’re not going to be good enough, when you go up too quickly and you don’t have the necessary skills to ride at four-star level, you put your sport at risk. I think people should be more honest with themselves of what they are and are not capable of. Everybody has bad days, and some times things go wrong, but as a rule of thumb, your rider should have the necessary armory of talent and skill to be able to cope with those levels.”

On his career as a designer…

Eric: “I show jumped for my initial years when I left school I worked for Caroline Bradley and the show jumping course design fascinated me and, then I went into eventing and now the cross country even more so. It has that bit of terrain and the use of ground and the appropriate questions at those places. The whole things is a package and I really enjoy it. It’s the coolest job in the world.”

On advice to up and coming course designers…

Eric: “Be passionate. Life is too short to go through doing something you don’t like. You’ve got to love it. Nobody travels to an event for the dressage and the show jumping. They’re important, but these guys haven’t driven three days because the dressage arenas were fantastic or the show jumping was brilliant – they came to go cross country. Your cross country courses should excite people, they should excite you. If they don’t excite you as a course designer, they’re never going to excite anyone else.”

On advice to riders taking on his courses…

Eric: My advice to all riders is to keep the horse between you and the ground. (After this he laughed… a lot – kick on y’all!)

Thanks to Eric for his candid responses. We are all looking forward to Badminton 2018!

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: Elisa Wallace & Simply Priceless #OCJ3DE Helmet Cam

Johnny is back! His run at the Ocala Jockey Club International Three-Day Event this weekend was his first international this fall, and as usual it was a complete pleasure to watch him go. Johnny and Elisa were one of four pairs to achieve a faultless cross country round over a testing track, which launched them into the top ten.

Elisa commented of the 15-year-old Australian Thoroughbred, “So proud of Johnny representing how amazing and talented [Thoroughbreds] are. Not only did we move up from 20th to 8th but we were 2nd place highest scoring Tb winning $3800 bucks! He also got so many compliments about how good he looked and how he looks younger! He’s turning 16 in a couple of days and feels amazing.”

Go Thoroughbreds. Go Eventing.

Did you know there are monsters in the leaves? And creatures in the trees? Colonel Mustard would like to make a public service announcement on behalf of all horses that there are indeed! Especially when you have to do dressage and especially when it’s chilly. Anyone else have a bit more horse underneath them in the last few days/weeks?

Tuesday News:

Not even four-star riders are immune from George Morris’ harsh criticism. Erin Sylvester says his clinics are a complete game changer for her riding. She continues that for eventers, whose role is often to ‘get the job done’ on cross country, the finer details like equitation often go to the back burner, but George Morris brings those back into focus. In its first year, the ’50 Penalty Rule’ for FEI events has caused a lot of waves. It was seen especially this weekend at the Australian International Three-Day Event in Adelaide. The wording may leave a little to be desired. [Debate Rages Over 50penRule at Adelaide Horse Trials]

As competitors we are all responsible for knowing the rules, but how well do you actually know them? No time like the present to make sure you do! [Rule Refresher: Saddlery]

Ocala Jockey Club CIC3* Live Cross Country Updates

Good afternoon, EN! We’ve made it to the last North American CIC3* of the year at the beautiful Ocala Jockey Club in Reddick, Florida for their second annual International Three-Day Event.

The competitive CIC3* division will take on Mike Etherington-Smith’s formative cross country course today beginning at 1:30 pm. You can take a peak around the entire track via EN’s course preview here.

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night are you overnight leaders on a 34 followed by Hannah Sue Burnett in second and third with Cooley Dream and Harbour Pilot, respectively. Click here to catch up on yesterday’s show jumping report. Liz has a bit of breathing room, 6 minutes and 12 seconds to be exact, but last year only two pairs managed to come home inside the time, so it could be a determining factor again in the event’s second running.

You can watch all the action live on EQSportsNet. Riders will NOT be starting in reverse order of standing, you can find ride times at this link.

Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot are your CIC3* winners after an influential cross country day at the 2017 Ocala Jockey Club International Three-Day Event. Phillip Dutton claims second and third with Z and Indian Mill, respectively. The time proved tight as only four pairs achieved double clear rounds – Phillip Dutton/Indian Mill, Joe Meyer/Clip Clop, Elisa Wallace/Simply Priceless and Erin Sylvester and Metraise. CCI2* show jumping gets underway at 3:30 p.m. EST. Stay tuned for Jenni’s cross country report from Ocala!

1:30 p.m. EST: And we’re off! Phillip Dutton is our trailblazer with I’m Sew Ready.

1:33 p.m. EST: No one is surprised to see Phillip give us a masterclass around Mike Etherington-Smith’s course. Clear so far and just foot perfect.

1:34 p.m. EST: Joe Meyer joins Phillip on course with Johnny Royale.

1:36 p.m. EST: Joe has picked up 20 at the double corners at fence 9b.

1:37 p.m. EST: “I feel smarter having watched this” – Jon Holling. Phillip really made this look like a quiet canter around.

1:37 p.m. EST: Third-placed Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot have left the start box!

1:41 p.m. EST: Hannah Sue has her foot on the pedal. This pair are looking for a clear.

1:42 p.m. EST: Katie Ruppel and Foreign Affair also fall victim to fence 9, the Diablo’s Devil Corners, where they have a run out at the b element.

1:44 p.m. EST: Fence 9, the second of the Diablo’s Devil Corners, is gaming to be the most influential fence on today’s course as Marilyn Little and RF Scandalous have a stop.

1:48 p.m. EST: The devil is at work today at fence 9AB. Michael Walton has a stop at the first corner, and comes around to also have a stop at the second corner.

1:49 p.m. EST: We’ve got the first time – Phillip & I’m Sew Ready added 9.2 time penalties. Hannah Sue finished just two seconds over the time to sit tentatively on a 42.2.

1:50 p.m. EST: Erin Sylvester came off her line into the first water, but Mettraise gave her a big jump to keep on.

1:52 p.m. EST: Mettraise is full of running and Erin is letting her go – they might be a pair near the time.

1:53 p.m. EST: Jacob Fletcher Van Gough slip a bit turning to the first water – the first wear on the footing after a raining morning in Ocala.

1:54 p.m. EST: Rats… Jacob with a runout at the corner at 9. Clear on second attempt.

1:56 p.m. EST: Melissa McMaster gives MMC Paddy Patterson become the fifth victims of the Diablo’s Devil Corners at 9.

1:58 p.m. EST: World Number 4 Phillip Dutton is back again, this time with Z who is looking very confident over the first fences.

2:00 p.m. EST: After two stops at the Boat at the Clubhouse Water (20) Melissa and MMC Paddy Patterson call it a day.

2:01 p.m. EST: Erin becomes the first rider to make the time today finishing with only one second to spare.

2:02 p.m. EST: Kelly Prather and Truely Wiley have two run outs at the corner at fence 9a and she puts a hand up to retire.

2:05 p.m. EST: Alexis Helffrich gets it done at the influential Diablo’s Devils Corners with London Town. Well done!

2:08 p.m. EST: Alyssa Phillips and Bliss III have a drive by at the corner at 9a. They are ultimately eliminated after a second stop at 9a and a final stop at 9b.

2:11 p.m. EST: Zoe Crawford and K.E.C. Zara cut it close at 9b, but make it through the corners clear!

2:13 p.m. EST: Kurt Martin and Anna Bella are off and looking quick.

2:15 p.m. EST: Zoe is looking foot perfect as she goes clear through the Clubhouse Water. She’s on quite a talented mare.

2:16 p.m. EST: Kurt is textbook through the tricky corners. Arguable the best ride of the day through there.

2:16 p.m. EST: Another time posted: Phillip was faster on his second ride, Z, where he added only 1.2 time penalties to make a big leaderboard leap.

2:17 p.m. EST: Cooley O stands off the Cascading Water at 7A picking up 20, Jules Ennis gets her over it on the second attempt.

2:18 p.m. EST: Jules and Cooley O have a glance off at the corners at 9a, and they retire.

2:20 p.m. EST: Tag takes a peak dropping into the Cascading water drop at 7a, but Erin Pullen slips her reins, sits back and makes a beautiful recovery.

2:21 p.m. EST: The Diablo’s Devil Corners claims yet another victim. Erin with two stops at 9B.

2:22 p.m. EST: Phillip is back for his third ride, Lup the Loop, a newer ride for him.

2:23 p.m. EST: Phillip and Lup the Loop have a run out at 7c. Clear on second attempt as they head to those pesky corners.

2:24 p.m. EST: An amazing performance by Phillip as he pilots Lup the Loop through the Diablo’s Devil corners.

2:25 p.m. EST: Shelby Brost and Crimson looking a little sticky through the first handful of fences, but she’s getting it together as she goes clear through the Cascading water.

2:27 p.m. EST: Shelby stuck to her plan to go for four strides between the corners and fence 9, and it paid off! Way to go girl!

2:28 p.m. EST: We welcome the experienced pair of Kristin Schmolze and Ballylaffin Bracken to this course that is proving to be very tricky.

2:31 p.m. EST: Kristin goes for the three, but Ballylaffin Bracken adds and takes out the top rail at The Double Ditches at Fence 16. Her result will includes 11 points for activating the frangible device there.

2:33 p.m. EST: Natalia Neneman and Weisser Riese are another pair to pick up a runout at 9b.

2:34 p.m. EST: Overnight leader Liz Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night are off and away!

2:35 p.m. EST: Kurt Martin and Anna Bella earned the fourth fastest run of the day so far, coming home four seconds over for 1.6 time penalties.

2:37 p.m. EST: Heartbreak! Liz and Blackie come to grief at the corner at 9b. Hannah Sue Burnett will be our winner – the only question remains on which horse.

2:38 p.m. EST: Another mistake at 9 – this time Cary Chavis and Game On pick up a runout. Clear on second attempt.

2:41 p.m. EST: Lauren Kieffer and Vermiculus head out. They will be gunning for a top five finish.

2:42 p.m. EST: Lauren is clear through the Diablo’s Devil Corners.

2:45 p.m. EST: Ashley Kehoe grits her teeth and makes it happen through the corners with Kilteay Toss Up.

2:48 p.m. EST: Today’s youngest competitor, 18-year-old Amanda Beale Clement looking great through the first water.

2:49 p.m. EST: Amanda has made it clear through the corners with Get Ready! She is undeniably one to watch for the future.

2:50 p.m. EST: Amanda may have had an issue at the Offset Brushes. The ground jury will review footage and make a decision on penalties.

2:51 p.m. EST: If anyone else can come home inside the time, it’s Elisa Wallace and Simply Priceless who are so far having a fantastic clear round.

2:53 p.m. EST: The King of Consistency Cambalda is out on course.

2:54 p.m. EST: Jennie guns for it at the Diablo’s Devil Corners, but reviewing the footage makes it seem as thought she was outside the flags on the wide side of the last corner. We believe 50 will be added to her score.

2:56 p.m. EST: Joe Meyer returns with his second ride, Clip Clop.

2:57 p.m. EST: Joe definitely wasn’t going to be fooled by the corners at 9 -he’s clear through with Clip Clop.

2:58 p.m. EST: Hannah has already cemented herself as the winner today, but with which horse? Cooley Dream out to beat his stablemate now.

3:01 p.m. EST: Hannah and Cooley Dream were not immune to fence 9 – they add 20 penalties at 9b.

3:02 p.m. EST: Katie Ruppel and Houdini are on course. If they can finish quick, they can earn second place.

3:04 p.m. EST: Katie fights for it at the corners. May be up for review, but so far marked as clear.

3:05 p.m. EST: Arg! Cooley Dream comes in a little funny to the boat (20A) at the Clubhouse Water, and stops at 20B. Hannah puts a hand up to retire. Disappointing finish for this one, but she’s still a winner with Harbour Pilot.

3:07 p.m. EST: Jacob Fletcher has a stop at 9b with past AEC Champion Atlantic Domino. It’s official – everyone is building a corner in the arena this winter!

3:08 p.m. EST: Phillip Dutton returns with his final ride of the day, Indian Mill.

3:10 p.m. EST: Katie Ruppel and Houdini finish 14 seconds over for 5.6 time penalties. Phillip could move ahead of them with Indian Mill.

3:13 p.m. EST: Phillip is home clear with Indian Mill inside the time! A master at work.

3:15 p.m. EST: An update on time – Joe Meyer & Clip Clop and Elisa Wallace & Simply Priceless both achieved the optimum time.
