Brazilian course designer Guilherme Jorge is well known in the show jumping world, and eventers had the opportunity to test themselves over a Guilherme original at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. He also designed the CSI3* Grand Prix course at the 2018 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event.
FEI TV caught up with Guilherme at this week’s Longines FEI Jumping World Cup NAL in Guadalajara, where he designed the feature $100,000 CSI4*-W course (watch the class in its entirety here). In this video, he explains what riders should focus on when walking their show jumping course.

In addition to showcasing top international eventing talent, the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day event is committed to showing love to charities that support equine organizations and serve the local community. The event names a different official charity to benefit each year, andĀ Bluegrass Land ConservancyĀ has been named the official charity of the 2019 event.
Bluegrass Land Conservancyās mission is to protectĀ land in Kentuckyās Bluegrass Region through permanent conservation easements.
“We are thrilled to be chosen as this year’s charity for the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event!” says Helen Alexander, Bluegrass Land Conservancy Board Chair. “This kind of recognition is so important to the work we do, and we hope that those coming in for the event will have an opportunity to get to know our organization better. The Bluegrass region of Kentucky is unique and special and spreading the word about what we do is so vital to our mission. A big thank you for this wonderful honor!”
Since 1998, Bluegrass Land Conservancy has protected 95 miles of rivers and streams, 21,600 acres of prime farmland soils and soils of statewide importance, 63 farms that contain historic sites, 10.29 miles of scenic byway frontage and over 27,000 acres of 131 farms in 24 counties across the Greater Bluegrass Region.

The main fundraiser for the Bluegrass Land Conservancy during the event is a farm-to-table dinner with equine-themed silent and live auctions, to include tickets to the 2020 Kentucky Derby, on Thursday, April 25, after the day’s competition. The dinner will be held at Mount Brilliant Farm, the final home of legendary racehorse Man o’ War. Tickets to the dinner are $80 per person and availability is limited. Additionally, $1 from each $5 stadium seat ticket to the $225,000 Kentucky CSI3* Invitational Grand Prix, which will run Saturday afternoon after cross country, will go to the 2019 Official Charity.

All work and no play makes Ocala a pretty dull place to be. Taking a personal day every now and again can keep you fresh and on your A-game in the tack. Here are five ideas, some horsey and some not, for fun ways to spend your day off.

Hit the Beach
Galloping along a sun-drenched beach with the sparkling surf lapping at your horseās feet ā¦ thatās the stuff of equestrian fantasy, especially this time of the year.
Amelia Island is about two-and-a-half hours northeast of Ocala, close-ish to Jacksonville, and itās horse (and dog!) friendly. There’s beachside trailer parking at Peter’s Point Park (600 Peters Point RoadĀ /Ā Fernandina Beach,Ā FLĀ 32034), and this time of the year you’ll have the place pretty much to yourself. With 13 miles of sandy seashore to explore, this is a true bucket-list experience.

Spend an Afternoon at HITS
There were several eventers in the crowd at last Sunday’s $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, and the exciting turn-and-burn jump-off had us all on the edges of our seats. There’s plenty to learn from our show jumping brethren.
In its 38th year running, HITS Ocala is a prime winter destination for hunter-jumper snowbirds, with 10 weeks of National and Premier-rated hunters, 5* and 6* jumpers and two USHJA International Hunter Derbies.Ā The circuit culminates each March with the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix.
The venue, Post Time Farm (13710 US Highway 27 / Ocala, FL 34482), has some of the prettiest arenas in the country, shaded by live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Peruse the tack vendors, admire the swanky stall setups, and on your way out be sure to stop by infamous watering hole The Beach for a cold one.

Swim with Manatees
Ocala isn’t just a winter destination for eventers! More than 400 manatees migrate to nearby Crystal River, about an hour from Ocala, during the winter months to escape the cold waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
A number of Crystal River outfitters offer visitors an opportunity to get up close and personal with these gentle creatures, as this is one of the only places in Florida where youāre legally permitted to swim withĀ manatees in their natural habitat. Many will rent you a kayak, wet suit and snorkel/mask, give you a map, and send you on your way to explore the area’s turquoise blue water for a few hours, or you can opt for a guided tour.
Keep your eyes peeled for manatees, particularly near designated protected springs, and feel free to hop on in as the springs flow at a constant 72 degrees year-round. The area is also great for birdwatching, and when we went last week we even had a close encounter with a dolphin!

Go Skydiving
You’re clearly predisposed to seeking out adrenaline rushes, so skydiving should be right up your alley. Several eventers, including EN’s own Jenni Autry (see photo above), have taken the leap at Skydive DeLand and returned with rave reviews.
Located about an hour and 15 minutes from Ocala, Skydive DeLand (1600 Flightline Boulevard / DeLand, FL 32724)Ā is a full-service drop zone open every day of the year and offers personalized experiences for jumpers of all skill levels. Novices are in good hands going tandem, and training programs are offered if you get the itch to take it to the next level. I mean, don’t you need another expensive sport in your life?

Unwind on the Trail
A long, slow trail ride is a great way to unwind, and fortunately for equestrians Ocala is laced with bridle paths. Ocala National Forest has an impressive trail system, including the LAM (Lake/Alachua/Marion) Trail which stretches for 34 miles and is marked with yellow blazes.Ā TheĀ Swim Pond horse trailer parking areaĀ serves as the main trailhead for all equestrian trails in the Forest. It is between Moss Bluff and Umatilla, just east of Doe Lake — see directions here.
You’ve noticed that land bridge running across I-75 on your way to the Florida Horse Park? That’s part of the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, a 110-mile nature park that crosses central Florida from the Gulf of Mexico to the St. John’s River, a destination for trail riders. Park at theĀ Land Bridge Trailhead (11100 SW 16th Avenue /Ā Ocala, FL 34476), which has paved parking for horse trailers, restroom facilities, a picnic area and water. Florida Horse Park also adjoins the Greenway.
Over the weekend we took the horses out for a long stroll inĀ Goethe State Forest, which features 126 miles of multi-use trails. There are several different trailer friendly trailheads to access the Forest — find a map here.

Heads up (and heels down) Training level competitors! The Charles Owen Technical Merit Award is back for a 10th year. This prize recognizes juniors and amateurs who demonstrate appropriate and safe cross country riding at designated events around the country, while educating riders and trainers as to what constitutes safe cross country riding.
From the USEA:
The COTM Award will be presented at one event in each of the 10 USEA Areas at the Training level to one junior and one adult amateur rider who have not competed at the Intermediate level or above. Every eligible rider at the Training level is automatically judged during their cross country round on the five criteria listed below and receives a scoresheet with written comments, providing valuable feedback on their cross country riding technique.

Each Award winner will receive a Charles Owen body protector and helmet bag, and the overall highest scoring junior and adult amateur rider from all 10 events will receive a voucher for a Charles Owen helmet. The USEA will provide ribbons through third place for each junior and adult amateur at every host COTM event.

US Equestrian (USEF) has updated theĀ USEF Rules for EventingĀ with the extraordinary rule changes passed at their Annual Meeting last week. These rule changes are effective as of January 1, 2019. Changes include: the whip rules in EV111 Abuse of Horses; rules about bits, ear hoods, and stirrups in EV115 Saddlery; clarification of circles in EV142 Cross-Country; and the switch from 1 penalty to 0.4 penalty per second over time in show jumping in EV153 Faults. There were also several clarifications made to the FEI star change. The USEA kindly outlined those changes for us. [USEF Updates Rulebook with Extraordinary Rule Changes]
Owners and riders are being asked to contribute to a study on risk factors for injuries and illnesses in eventing horses in Britain. Information on horses competing at all levels of British Eventing competition is being sought by The Animal Health Trust, which is working with British Eventing, the British Equestrian Federation and World Horse Welfare. Results from previous studies led by the AHT have been used to advise trainers, riders and owners about how to prevent injury in dressage and show jumping horses. Those taking part can also enter into a prize draw to win products and services valued at more than Ā£1000. [Take the Survey]

High-achieving Thoroughbreds in the sport horse world were honored during USEF Horse of the Year Awards, which took place on Jan. 12 atĀ the US Equestrian Annual Meeting in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Rood & Riddle Sport Horse Awards are given each year to Thoroughbreds participating in their second careers as performance horses in jumper, hunter, eventing and dressage competitions.
Competitors earn points toward the awards at USEF-sanctioned events during the show season, and the open divisional awards go to the highest point earners. There are two awards per discipline, open and rookie.Ā A Horse of the Year is chosen among the open winners by a panel of celebrities, to be presented at the annual Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association awards banquet held in September.
The 2018 Eventing Open Division trophy was awarded to Archie Rocks, an 11-year-old Thoroughbred developed by through the three-star level by Maya Simmons, campaigned in 2018 by Buck Davidson, and recently sold to Felix Vogg. Bred in Michigan by Sharon Smith, he wonĀ $32,176 in 30 starts, racing under the Jockey Club name Smittys Messiah (Le MondeĀ xĀ Unbridled Diva, byĀ Unbridled Jet).
He found his calling as an event horse and has had a phenomenal past year with Buck, finishing 8th in the Jersey Fresh CCI3*, winning the Plantation Field CIC3*, and finishing 3rd in the Fair Hill CCI3*. We wish this special OTTB continued success in 2019 with Felix in the irons! EN recently caught up with Felix for an interview and we’ll be bringing that to you very soon.

The Eventing Rookie Division trophy was awarded to Rebel Soul, an 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding owned byĀ Isabel Holden who made his FEI debut in late 2018. The pair finished 22nd in the Ocala Jockey Club CCI1* and had several top 10 finishes at Prelim horse trials throughout the year.Ā Bred in Kentucky by Samuel Bayard, Rebel Soul (BernsteinĀ xĀ Bronze Abe, byĀ Two Punch) earnedĀ $21,198 in 14 starts on the track before embarking upon his eventing career.
Isabel boughtĀ Rebel directly off the track in Minnesota from Cyndi Loomis four years ago, when he was a 4-year-old. “He had been spotted by trusted advisors while still racing as a great eventing prospect, and so of course I jumped on the chance when he was ready for his next career,” Isabel says.
“He spent his first year off the track mostly relaxing, and then started his training,” she says. “I am fortunate enough to work at Law Eventing, so Rebel and I as a pair have had coaching from two of the greats in our industry over the past three years.”
From 2015 through 2018 Rebel went from his first show to the one star level. Their plan for the winter is to put in a good season at the Prelim/1* level, with a move-up to Intermediate in the summer if all goes as planned.

“So far heās showing no signs of having reached his limit,” Isabel says. “Heās great in all three phases, extremely easy to handle, and has an excellent worth ethic. Rebel is competitive against the warmbloods and all other breeds. Thoroughbreds have amazing athleticism and heart. I have a young off the track mare that I will be starting to bring along in 2019 as well. I feel very fortunate to ride Rebel, and thankful to those that have mentored us.”

You hear nice-to-a-fault people all the time bemoaning “I can’t say no!” As a species, we’ve perfected the old nod-and-smile: “Of course I’m excited about wearing this bridesmaid dress that makes me look like a pregnant manatee!” or “Of course I’d be happy to cover your shift so you can get a head start on your amazing beach vacation!”
Horses don’t have this problem. They have no qualms about saying “no,” “hell no,” “this activity is stupid,” “you are stupid,” “everything is stupid,” and/or “I quit, bye-bye.” You never have to wonder where a horse stands on an issue, because they’ll straight-up let you know.

After watching this helmet camĀ on Horse Nation of a snow white, 14.2-hand Connemara named Prince gamely tackling cross country, I had to know more: WHO IS THIS PONY?!?!
A little research turned up that he belongs to a British young rider named Gracie, who events him at the BE105 level. “He really is the sweetest, and loveliest pint Iāve ever met and Iām so proud of how far we have come as a partnership this year,” she writes of her 2018 recap video. “We ended on a high yesterday as well completed our first ever 110/115cm — I am so excited to see what happens next year!”

When Clare Reeves’ mare began insisting on nuzzling the same spot on her shoulder, she paid attention. Laura Graves Named 2018 Equestrian of the Year at Pegasus Awards Presented by Adequan
Dressage star Laura Graves took the top honor at this year’s awards, having enjoyed a stellar year with her and Curt Maesās 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Verdades (Florett AS x Liwilarda/Goya). The pair led the U.S. to team gold at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games and became the first American combination to earn an individual silver medal at a world championship. Their success at the WEG boosted Laura and Verdades to the no. 1 spot on the FEI Dressage World Ranking List in October, marking the first time a U.S. dressage combination has been ranked as world number one.
