Suffolk Downs of East Boston, Massachusetts, the last Thoroughbred race track in New England, saw horses run down the stretch for the final time on Sunday, June 30th as demolition of the barns and the track was scheduled to begin the following day on July 1st.

I had the honor of joining a friend who is familiar with the track on Saturday for the second to last day of racing. I expected the weekend to be part celebration of the 84-year-legacy of the racetrack, part mourning for the demise of a place where so many memories were made, but a gratefulness really seemed to be the prevailing mood: gratefulness for the the time spent, friendships forged and for the horses who brought everyone together on the outskirts of the city under the landing planes of Logan Airport.

I didn’t spend a huge amount of time at Suffolk so the track’s closing certainly doesn’t affect me in the way it does those who’s livelihood has depended on it, but it did play a part in fostering my love of the horse at an early age. As a kid who didn’t grow up around horses and was bitten by the horse bug completely out of nowhere it was a way to get up close to the animals that so fascinated me. Before I could convince my parent to let me take riding lessons, I convinced them to bring me to the track to watch the horses run!

My friend adopted her horse off the track from Suffolk and in her words, he’s the best souvenir from a place that’s meant so much to her over the past 10 years. This week in honor of Suffolk Downs our OTTB Wishlist features three horses who have crossed the finish line there. Make one of them your very own souvenir from this historic track:

Stone to Gold (BUSTIN STONES – CHEVAL DE JOI, BY FRENCH DEPUTY): 2014 16.0-hand New York-bred gelding

Stone to Gold was a part of Suffolk Downs’ grand finale weekend, racing in a claimer on Saturday and finishing near the back of the pack as has been his recent form. His trainer realizes that racing is not his calling and wants him to find a second career while he’s still young and sound. This lovely grey gelding is nicely put together and has a nice reaching walk and cute trot to go along with his correct build. His owner says he’s a sweet horse who’s always looking for peppermints. He was well behaved and listed to his handler during his jog video even though he was clearly a little spicy that day.

Legendary King (BRAHMS – DANCE SKIRT, BY CAUCASUS): 2008 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Legendary King, indeed. This gelding is both a war horse and a world traveler. Though he was bred in Kentucky, Legendary King actually began his racing career in Poland where he won three out of four starts. Once he came stateside, he ran in a few graded stakes races and but wasn’t super competitive in those fields. He found his niche as a king of claiming races, often finishing in the money and earning a total of $165,320 over his career. Legendary King has raced at 11 different tracks in the U.S., including Suffolk Downs.

In his last race which was in June of 2018, he bowed a tendon and was vanned off the track. He’s been rehabbing ever since and is back under saddle now, showing great progress. The leg is noticeable cosmetically, but it’s cold and tight and isn’t causing any hurdles in Legendary King’s retraining under saddle. He’s even jumping cross rails already! If you’re looking to give a great home to a really incredible horse who could still yet be a low level eventer, don’t overlook Legendary King.

We Wilburn You (WILBURN – WE USE TO SING, BY MINESHAFT): 2014 16.0-hand Pennsylvania-bred gelding

We Wilburn You is a real barn favorite thanks to his kind and easy-going personality (notice that there is no one holding his lead …) His trainer says he’s “just a good egg” and actually wanted to keep him for herself as a foxhunter. Time constraints for his sale, however, so her loss is your gain and his price was recently reduced! We Wilburn you last raced at the end of March and has made a total of 41 career starts with modest earnings of $47,000. He passed through Suffolk Downs once, racing in a claimer there last June.

Monday Video from Total Saddle Fit: Andrew Hoy Helmet Cams from Farley Hall

Australia’s Andrew Hoy is on a roll with the helmet cams! A few weeks ago we rode around Luhmühlen CCI4*-S with him and the 10-year-old superstar WEG mount, Vassily de Lassos. Now we present you with a couple helmet cams from BE Novice level last week’s Farley Hall Horse Trials in Berkshire, England.

Above, we take a spin around the course with Linda Mars’ eight-year-old gelding Brigant (Ceasar van de Helle x Quignon du Moulin) who finished on his dressage score for eighth place. Below, Andrew rides hors concours with Barbara Keller’s 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse Hasenacher Jack Sparrow, an established three-star horse who is working his way back up after some time off.

Some OTTBs get snapped up real quick the second they step off the track and onto the sales list. Others end up waiting a little while longer for the right person to come along and polish that diamond in the rough.

Our three featured horses this week have actually already been featured in previous editions of OTTB Wishlist, but they’re still waiting for the right person to come along give them a chance at a second career. Could that person be you?

Frasero (EL CORREDOR – CAMPI DI ROMA (ARG), BY ROMANOV (IRE)): 2009 16.0-hand Argentina-bred gelding

Frasero was featured back in March when we introduced MidAtlantic Horse Rescue Inc. to our rotation of featured organizations in OTTB Wishlist. Since then the staff there have been able to put more rides on him and have determined that he needs a rider who is soft and confident. He tries very hard to please, but needs help developing his own confidence and relaxation.

Frasero began his racing career as a three-year-old in his native Argentina and raced there for a year in graded stakes races before being imported to the U.S. In the States, he raced in claiming and allowance races and amassed over $94,000 in 38 starts. Years ago in his career, Frasero did have a condylar fracture on his right front but it was repaired surgically and he continued to race on it without problems. Frasero is retiring soundly after a long racing career and should not have any limitations going forward. This 2019 RRP eligible horse came to MidAtlantic Horse Rescue through Maryland’s Beyond the Wire program and was such a favorite in his trainer’s barn that they packed a bag of mints for him for the journey to MAHR. Frasero is a forward horse without being hot and a good mover. He’s a kind boy who would really like a best friend with which to take on a new job.

Alltheleavesrbrown (BIG BROWN – VICKEY JANE, BY ROYAL ACADEMY): 2012 16.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

This son of the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown has had an interesting racing career and may be more well-traveled than you! In his 43 races, “Brown” has run at 12 different tracks spanning from Pennsylvania to California. His career seems to have been a bit hit or miss: he has a number of wins and good placings, but also did not finish (DNF) a few races. Each DNF seems to just be a result starting too fast and ultimately being overcome by the field. It doesn’t seem to be anything to worry about though — the race charts note that he was eased, loped across the wire, and walked off the course just fine each time.

Brown’s last race was at the end of February (so he is 2019 Thoroughbred Makeover eligible) and has since retired sound and made his way to MMSC where he was treated to some spa time and bodywork. The MMSC staff has found that he’s an “enthusiastic and quick learner.” Make sure to watch the video of him at liberty and check out that hock action plus also his newly posted under saddle video as well!

Jenna J (ARCHARCHARCH – WHITE NILE, BY UNBRIDLED’S SONG): 2014 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred mare

Is this little dappled filly not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen? At three-years-old, Jenna J stands between 15.3 and 16.0-hands right not and still has some growing to do. She looks like she’s going to mature into an absolutely stunning mare and that shoulder on her hints at some hidden talent for jumping. Jenna J has spent the winter hanging out at her trainers farm and proved to be an easy keeper. She’s now back on the track and in training. In her seven career races so far she’s already won two!

Since we first featured her back in April Jenna J has actually gone back to racing, running twice in June and finishing mid-pack both times. She’s still listed for sale though, so if you like her she could still be yours!

An article on EN helped Bronwyn Watts find her purpose. The former five-star event groom was in search of her next calling when she scrolled through an article about nurse mares and knew she needed to get involved. Now Bronwyn is running her own business which provides an ethical solution to supplying nurse mares for orphaned or rejected foals. Twin horses aren’t very common. Even less common? The odds of them both going on to become successful event horses and each winning their respective divisions with just 0.2 penalty points separating their scores? Now that’s next-level twinning. The Genesee Valley Hunt Horse Trials has announced they will accept late entries through July 2nd. There will be a $50 late fee for the July 13-14th event, but take you pick at levels from Intro through Modified. [Omnibus]

There aren’t a lot of obstacles that will make an eventer’s eyes bug out, but the ultra-steep Hickstead Bank is generally one of them. It’s seriously impressive any time a horse and rider descend that monstrosity, but a 19-year-old? Holy smoke. And as a first-time Derby competitor? Wow. Oh, and even more impressive: HE WON.

Ireland’s Michael Pender — just three months shy of his 20th birthday — became the youngest winner of the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby yesterday. Facing off against Derby veterans Shane Breen and Harriet Nuttall in a jump off, Michael rode Hearton Du Bois Halleux, a 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion, to post the only double clear. Watch their round above!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Bay Mare Don’t Care

Mares. It’s love ’em or hate ’em, apparently. I’ve met numerous people who have claimed that they’ll never own one. They’re just too opinionated, or moody, or sensitive, they say.

I say that’s ridiculous. Get a good mare on your side and you’ll have a trusted partner for life. Not to mention they’re just as tough and athletic as the boys — may I reminded you that two out of the last three five-star winning horses have been mares?

This week we’ve found three bay mares all described as being completely lovely and kind. Bring any one of these ladies home and give them a chance — they might just turn you into a mare person!

Red Brook Road (BELLAMY ROAD – ESSA BRILHA (BRZ), BY ROI NORMAND): 2014 16.3-hand New York-bred mare

This daughter of Bellamy Road is a true barn favorite — not a single person present at her Finger Lakes Finest photoshoot had anything even remotely negative to say about her. “Brook” is impeccably well-mannered, a very good thing given how tall she is, which she displayed during her photoshoot by standing like a rock during the windy, rainy weather while her photo as being taken. Her groom reports that she is very kind and doesn’t even need to be tied for grooming and tacking.

Brook has enjoyed a fairly light racing schedule of just a couple races per year and has enjoyed turnout time at her owner’s farm, which she is reported to love, during her downtime. This is the kind of easy-going mare that should adjust to life in a stable as a riding horse just swimmingly.

Cubbie Girl North (AMERICAN LION – ICY LAND LADY, BY NEWFOUNDLAND): 2016 16.0-hand Illinois-bred mare

This filly is ready to put all your preconceived notions about young OTTBs to rest. Hot and unmanageable? Nah. Don’t let that lead shank fool you: It looks like this three-year-old needs it more to get her to trot rather than than to keep her under control. Once she gets going, she shows some very cute movement though!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given her limited hustle to jog out, Cubbie Girl North has no interest in racing. She has clean legs and minimal wear and tear with just four career starts. With such stellar conformation, solid feet, and a great brain, Cubbie Girl North is sure worth a shot as your next sport horse prospect.

Shanghai Spring (LIAISON – SHANGHAI PRINCESS, BY PRIVATE VOW): 2015 16.0-hand Ohio-bred mare

This regal plain bay just screams show horse. She’s already very mature and well-balanced for a three-year old, displaying three nice gaits and a soft mouth. As a two-year old, Shanghai Spring has two starts and placed third in both, but then a non-racing related puncture wound sidelined her. She’s recovered perfectly, but by the time she was ready to race again her owners had other more prospects to focus on.

“Mei” has shown that she is well-mannered and confident. She stands quietly when asked — whether it be on the crossties, in her stall, or at the mounting block  — and she enjoys attention. Though still very green under saddle, she tries hard to do what she’s asked and shows no hesitation in trying new things.

The severe weather overnight from Friday into Saturday caused a delay to the start of all divisions of cross country at Luhmühlen, so everyone had a little time to kill on Saturday morning. German blogger Julis Eventer put together a challenge to help keep everyone entertained before the real competition resumed, and she pit Tim Price and Andrew Hoy against each other in an intense battle of skill.

The test? Who can complete the most braids in three minutes. 

The winner? Honestly, no one really. And it seems Andrew Hoy’s groom nearly died of embarrassment in the process — poor girl. Watch the video above to be absolutely utterly appalled at the braiding skills of these top competitors and in the process gain even more of an appreciation for super grooms everywhere.

Every single time I come out of the dressage ring at a show my dad looks up at me from the ground and says, “Looked good to me.”

It’s funny (and he knows it – he’s full of those patented “Dad jokes”) because he has no idea what dressage is supposed to look like — he’s not a horse person. Yet despite not being a horse person, he’s been to almost every single one of my horse shows I’ve ever competed in, including many that have fallen on Father’s Day. Thanks Dad, for being the best non-horsey horse show dad around. But really, thanks for just being the best Dad.

Jonty and Art: the dramatic story of how one rider crowd funded his way into keeping the ride on his beloved horse. Can you imagine it as a movie or tv show? You may soon not have to, as the project is in the very early stages of development and the producers are looking for some help to get the fledgeling film off the ground with international production company, Studio KS1.

The first step is to secure a development fund and Studio KS1 is raising the money needed for the early stages of production through – you guessed it – crowd funding! A development fund is required to set the earliest stages of production into motion, but is actually reimbursed to the producers when filming begins. Those putting together the development package have pledged to donate the proceeds from the development fund to four meaningful charities once filming begins. You can help support the screen adaptation of Jonty’s story and donate to a worthy cause by contributing to the development fund. You’ll also get some cool rewards as thanks for doing so!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: $100k Club, Part II

Last week our OTTB Wishlist featured three horses whose earnings exceeded the $100,000 mark and you know what? We’re running with the same theme again this week! It’s not so common that we find so many wealthy war horses looking for their second careers within in such a short span of time, so why not show them all off?

Here are three more lovely high-earning horses than you can take home for dirt cheap:

Hirschbein (POSSE – F SHARP, BY KRIS S.): 2012 16.2-hand New York-bred gelding

Sometimes you just can’t judge a horse by a still photo, so I implore you to check out Hirschbein’s jog video. The photo above might lead you believe that there may not be all that much athleticism to this seven-year-old, but the pictures absolutely do not do this horse justice. He actually has a really lovely way of going — it’s uphill and floaty with nice hock action to boot!

Hirschbein (Maybe you can call him “Hershey” or something for short?) did well for his connections in claiming and allowance races, winning $128,328 in 37 career starts. He raced as recently as last week, which means he’s eligible for the 2019 RRP Thoroughbred Makeover, but since he’s barely hit the board this racing season his connections figure he’d rather find a new career at this point in his life.

Mountain Cry (STREET CRY (IRE) – MOUNTAIN BIRD, BY MT. LIVERMORE): 2012 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Light-boned and athletic, Mountain Cry is a classic Thoroughbred type with the added bonus of a lovely sloped shoulder suggesting good jumping ability. He’s also a bit of a fiery redhead, but if you can channel his energy in the right direction he’s clearly a very talented athlete having been in the money in enough claiming races to earn over $100,000. Mountain Cry is retiring in good condition and last raced just at the end of May.

Life No Parole (MINISTERS WILD CAT – MATRIMONY, BY NOT FOR LOVE): 2011 15.3-hand California-bred mare

Alright I admit, I’m cheating a little bit: Life No Parole didn’t quite make it into the $100k Club. But she’s less than $500 short so that’s close enough, right?! Plus, how could we pass her by when she’s just so adorable and beautifully built. This short-coupled and clean-legged lady is an absolute doll and her trainer, who has had her for the past five years, is he biggest fan. He calls her a “sound, sweetheart of a horse, who loves to work” and wants to find the very best home for her. This mare has raced a total of 82 times, running consistently over the past five seasons, making her one of those worth-their-weight-in-gold war horses. She’s ready to be your new best friend and partner!

The next best thing to going eventing yourself is watching it in person (maybe even via volunteering!) The next best thing to watching it in person is watching it on livestream. This weekend there were four major events with livestreams to keep up with on various days — all phases of the second leg of the Event Rider Masters series at Wiesbaden in Germany, dressage and show jumping from the FEI Eventing Nations Cup at Pratoni Del Vivaro in Italy, a whole day of cross country on Saturday from the Bramham International Horse Trials in England, and finally the Sunday show jumping from Bromont CCI in Canada.

It was truly a great weekend for eventing around the world, but if you’re like me then you were lucky enough to miss a lot of it because you were outside doing some eventing yourself! Have no fear: here are some video highlights from the action you may have missed:

Weekly OTTB Wishlist Presented by Cosequin: $100k Club

You’ve got to love a war horse. With these horses you know that you’re getting a horse with heart, athleticism and toughness. They gave it their all on the track and did very well for their connections. Recognizing this, the connections of these horses want the best for their charges and are rehoming them through wonderful organizations across the country and giving them the chance to show their heart in a second career as well.

The horses we are featuring today have earned their connections over $100,000 in winnings at the track. Will winning your heart be their next great feat?

Husky Clipper (PURE PRIZE – MIKI’S MELODY, BY APTITUDE): 2012 16.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

This seven-year-old is beautifully built and extremely well bred; he fetched $350,000 in the Ocala Breeder’s Sale as a two-year-old. He only made back about a third of that for his connections, however, earning $127,732 in 44 starts.

Husky Clipper is more of marathoner as opposed to a sprinter: he likes the longer races, which aren’t held as commonly. Therefore the reason he’s being sold, despite his relative success as a racehorse, is that it’s getting harder for his connections to find races to enter him in. This is too bad for Husky Clipper’s connections, but it’s great for anyone looking for an event horse prospect! Husky Clipper raced just last week and looks sound as a pound. He’s eligible for the 2019 RRP Thoroughbred Makeover.

Golden Causeway (GIANT’S CAUSEWAY – IN THE GOLD, BY GOLDEN MISSILE): 2008 16.0-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Golden Causeway has been well-cared for by the same owner/trainer for the majority of his 63 race and $116,075 career. He stayed quite competitive through his ten-year-old year, but as an eleven-year-old he’s now beginning to drop back in the standings, signaling to his connections that it’s time to for him to begin a new chapter.

Just because Golden Causeway is a smidge slower on the track than he used to be, doesn’t mean he’s ready to slow down overall. Now under saddle at Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center (MMSC) “Causeway” shows up to work everyday eager to please and learn new things. The MMSC staff are finding him to be a brave and quick leaner – he’s even already mastered crossrail courses — and think that he’s truly a good event horse in the making due to his bravery and quick learning style. Plus, he’s a sweetheart on the ground! Causeway’s last race was in September 2018 which makes him 2019 RRP Thoroughbred Makeover eligible as well.

Chesapeake Bay (NOT FOR LOVE – BACCATA, BY BAEDERWOOD): 2015 16.0-hand Maryland-bred gelding

If you’re looking to give a really deserving solid citizen a great home, while still also being able to enjoy a riding horse then Chesapeake Bay is the one for you. This now fourteen-year old earned a total of $125,373 in a 54-start racing career which spanned from 2009 through 2011. Chesapeake Bay had some foot issues in 2018 which are now resolved, but will require some continued long-term care. The right adopter who is willing to give him the care he deserves will benefit from a waived adoption fee! Despite his feet needing some TLC, he’s being ridden regularly at all gaits in an arena and is doing very well.

If you haven’t, go do yourself a favor. (Oh yeah, Tim won the class by the way.)

Thanks to Otis’ mum, Jonelle, eventing superstar in her own right, we have video of the whole affair as well and yes, it’s just as cute at the stills make it out to be. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone more proud to stand atop a podium and my heart is MELTING.

Lucy McCarthy, former five-star rider and wife to Irish eventer Padraig McCarthy, does it all … except compete. It was Lucy (née Wiegersma) who brought Mr Chunky, Padraig’s WEG silver medal winning mount, to the five-star level. Though she’s currently no longer competing, Lucy is the lynchpin of the family breeding, training and sales business. [Lucy McCarthy Went From Top Rider To Supportive Wife And Mum — And Why That’s Totally Okay]

Tattersalls: it’s not just a competition, it’s a sale! A group of nicely-bred mostly four-year-old event prospects were ooh’d and ahh’d over during the Goresbridge Tattersalls Ireland Select Event Horse Sale. Six of the fourteen horses presented were sold and Oliver Townend bought two. [Top lot at Tattersalls event horse sale fetches €37,000 as Oliver Townend buys two]

Today in random celebrity equestrian news, Wayne Newton offered to give Lady Gaga a horse. Arabella, a horse of Lady Gaga’s horses who passed away earlier this year, was apparently related to one of the stallions in Wayne Newton’s Arabian breeding program. When he heard of Gaga’s horse passing, he invited her to come to his stable and see if she might like another. Isn’t that nice? [Lady Gaga Offered One of Wayne Newton’s Arabian Horses]

When I grow up I want to ride like Pam Paulk, seen here on her OTTB gelding With A Vengeance a.k.a “Eddie.” Pam is 64 years old and purchased Eddie as a lightly-restarted eventing prospect a few months ago from Trillium Sport Horses in Anthony, Florida.

“Hard to believe I’m taking on another OTTB at my age, as I can’t afford regular lessons so I’m doing my best on my own farm and meet up with trainers when able. We have so many fortunate to have many wonderful venues in Central Florida to school,” says Pam.

“I rode hunters for decades and jumpers for a year, but I started eventing when I was 56 and wish I’d started sooner. I have never had so much fun in my life and have made many wonderful friends.”

Scientist Kat (COURAGEOUS CAT – COLOR CODE, BY TOO MUCH BLING): 2015 16.0-hand New York-bred gelding

Nicely balanced and athletically inclined with Storm Cat and Fappiano sire lines, Scientist Kat is ready to rocket himself into a new career. He’s lightly raced and has minimal wear-and-tear with only eight career starts. Kat last raced at the end of April and has since been turned out on his owner’s farm so he’s already had some letdown time away from the track. From his jog video, Kat looks like a nice springy mover who’ll be really eye-catching when he learns to carry himself.

Flying Bird (STREET BOSS – CAGED GLORY, BY HONOUR AND GLORY): 2010 16.1-hand Kentucly-bred gelding

Don’t count Flying Bird out just because he’s not a total youngster — he’s the same age as Pam’s horse above and might have just enough gusto for his new job! “Bird” came to Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center (MMSC) with some dressage training already put on him and the MMSC staff are thrilled to report that he’s already enthusiastically taken to jumping as well. Bird is a forward-thinking mount, but also a kind-hearted partner and could be a really fun prospect for an young rider or amateur.

Forest Breeze (OLD FORESTER – CLASSIC BLONDE, BY REGAL CLASSIC): 201116.2-hand Ontario-bred gelding

If you have a thing for athletic chestnuts with chrome then Forest breeze is for you. This war horse earned over $166,000 and has plenty left in the tank for a second career. He’s actually still racing and just made his 71st start on Memorial Day this week! Forest Breeze loves to have a job and is a been-there-done that type who’d love to be your faithful partner.

If this doesn’t demonstrate what a partnership is all about then I’ve been doing it wrong for decades now. Today Patrick gave me his best efforts on the VAHT Intermediate XC and as you’ll see (pardon the language) at fence 21 A I thought I had balanced enough for a quite difficult question coming so late in the course with two upright narrow boxes on a very short one stride after two galloping efforts downhill. Needless to say I failed at my job, causing Paddy to hit a knee sending me forward onto his neck and by George that horse held the line WITHOUT my help and jumped the second out of a perfect distance and a lovely shape (Mary Brant Gamma has pics to prove) pushing me back into the saddle and away we went fault free and full of confidence! I am not condoning mistakes here people but what I am encouraging you “next generation riders” to do is to take that extra time to groom your horse, clean his stall, take him on hacks and become his friend. In moments like these you’ll sure be glad that you did. What a horse! #callhimpaddy #poweredbyottb

Lainey Ashker has a string of serious up-and-comers in her stable right now, one of them being Call Him Paddy, a 2010 off-the-track Thoroughbred gelding (Alymagic X Woodford Princess, by Candi’s Gold) with whom she competed in the 2015 Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover.

Lainey ran “Patrick” in the hotly-contested Open Intermediate division at Virginia Horse Trials over the weekend and made easy work of the course up until a late-course question, when a rider error caused a hairy moment that Patrick could have easily opted to run out from the second element. Instead, his training and relationship with his rider kicked in and brought them both home free of jumping faults.

Hear what happened from Lainey herself:

Abby Blackburn, captain of Transylvania University’s eventing team, was named as a finalist for her school’s Female Athlete of the Year award alongside soccer players, basketball players, golfers, and other athletes competing in more “traditional” school sports. On her way home from competing at the USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Championship at Chattahoochee Hills Horse Trials last weekend Abby and the team’s coach, Tanya Davis, and tuned in to the annual all-sport athletic banquet via live-stream when it was announced that she had won the honor! As far as anyone is yet aware, this is the first time in history that a University has given an Athlete of the Year award to an event rider. Last year it was the east coast and England who suffered an abundance of event cancellations due to heavy rainfall. Those regions have been much luckier this year with regards to weather, but after a bout of heavy rainfall in northern Texas and more on the way, Willow Draw announced the cancellation of its May 25th event. Last weekend, while our eyes were on Jersey Fresh and Chatsworth ERM Leg 1, another contingent of top international riders on WEG 2018 horses were out in force in Marbach, Germany contesting the four-star levels at the Internationale Marbacher Vielseitigkeit.

Michael Jung had three rides in the CCI4*-S including fischerChipmunk FRH, the eleven-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Contendro I X Havanna, by Heraldik I) owned by Dr. Hilmer Meyer-Kulenkampff who was previously very successfully campaigned by Julia Krajewski. The pair came out with a bang in their first appearance together at the CCI4*-S level earning a dressage score of 21.7 and adding four time penalties across the country. Michael and “Chip” were leading the division going into the show jumping, but pulled a single rail to give fellow German Andreas Dibowski and half-sister FRH Corrida, a 10-year-old Hanoverian mare (Contendro I X Expo, by Espri) owned by BG Corrida, the win by one-tenth of a penalty point.

The other two horses that Michael rode in the CCI4*-S were making their debut at the level. Michael took seventh place with Corazon, a nine-year-old Hanoverian mare (Casillas 2 X Skyline, by Sir Donnerhall) owned by Maria Stein and he guided his youngest ride, eight-year old Irish Sport Horse gelding Highlighter (Caretino 2 X Traumerin, by Landgraf I) owned by the Jung family and Anette Schmid to 31st place after picking up 20 penalties.

You can watch Michael and Highlighter’s cross country round in the video above — just prepare to be delighted by the techno remix of Pirates of the Caribbean that accompanies it. Honestly, if it doesn’t make your Monday then I don’t know what to tell you.

Andrew Hoy and the 10-year-old Anglo-Arab Vassily de Lassos (Jaguar Mail X Illusion Purdue, by Jalienny) owned by Paula and David Evans and Andrew were the only pair in the four-star to finish on their dressage score and their stellar clear rounds rocketed them from 28th place after dressage to third place overall.
