OK guys, I’ve been really slow this spring in getting my competition season started, and I’m gonna fully blame it on the weather here in Virginia, but it’s been pretty nice lately so I’m off and running! I feel like my young horse has really grown up this year and matured in his body (and hopefully his brain) so I am excited to do some bigger jumps and more fun courses and hopefully be a big boy. This weekend I’m going to a local hunter trials to run the 3′ cross country course and practice some of my finer controls … wish me luck!

This week we pay tribute to the world’s oldest mule, Tootsie, as he left our presence due to age related health issues. Tootsie was 56 years old, and lived most of his life in a Donkey Sanctuary in England. Tootsie was well known for his love of a romp around the paddock with the old grannies of the sanctuary and his undying passion for food. RIP Tootsie. [World’s Oldest Donkey Dies]

OK so obviously the only thing all eventers are talking about today is the newly released entry list for Kentucky, because also April is right around the bend, and we’re all getting a little twitchy thinking about it. The days are longer, the green grass is poking out, the trees are starting to get leaves, so naturally it’s time for KENTUCKY!!!!! The first CCI4*-S of the west coast kicked off yesterday with the first horse inspection at Galway Downs. With everything from Beginner Novice to Advanced, a CCI2*-S, a CCI3*-S, and a CCI4*-S, its hard to imagine a more popular competition. There are a total of 345 entries this weekend, with seven in the four-star, 25 in the three-star, and 30 in the two-star. [Galway Downs Fast Facts]

Ah, the eventing times they are a’changing. We old folks look back on that “steeplechase” thing fondly, and remember the golden days of our youth, galloping headlong into brush fences. The tradition of steeplechase dates all the way back to 1752, in County Cork, Ireland. Steeplechase racing made it to the U.S. in 1834, and into eventing officially when it was recognized as a sport in 1912. RIP Steeplechase, which began leaving the upper levels of the sport in 2004. Colleen Loach and Qorry Blue D’Argouges were the highest placed Canadian pair last year in their first year galloping around the course at Kentucky, and this year they’re aiming to knock a few points off their score from 2018. They positively stormed around the WEG course last fall as the first on course, and they’ll be bringing that positive experience to the table in a little less than a month. Heads up, collegiate eventers! Area 8 is about to kick off the season at Spring Bay the first weekend in April, and the University of Louisville will be hosting an Intercollegiate Challenge at Spring Bay. Great prizes from SmartPak and Devoucoux are up for grabs. It is also the first leg of the Intercollegiate Grand Slam! Today we honor the life and legend of Divine Comedy, known to his friends as Dante, the once and always king. Our very own Maggie Deatrick unexpectedly lost her horse of a lifetime, her unicorn, her true love this week, and I think I speak for everyone in the eventing community when I say I’m sending her all my love and holding her in the light for the days and weeks to come. It’s so incredibly hard when we lose our beloved horses, and especially the ones that we’ve had for years and adventured around the country aboard. RIP Dante, you were so unbelievably beloved, and we love you Maggie.

In very sad news, top eventing stallion Upsilon has been diagnosed with a mutation of the equine herpes virus. He has been battling the illness all week, and has been critically ill. His owner and rider Tom Carlisle says that his motor neuron system has been badly damaged, and doubts that the horse will return to competition. At the moment, he is back home from the hospital and they hope that they can maintain his health and bring him back to comfort and happiness. [Upsilon Battling For His Life]

Are you watching the USEF/USET Foundation North American Futures Team Challenge this weekend at Carolina International? The first ever Team Challenge kicks off this week at Cloud 11~Gavilan North LLC Carolina International CCI and Horse Trials. Eight U.S. athletes and two reserve combinations will be named to two teams to gain experience competing in a team environment. The Team Challenge was announced during the 2018 USEA Annual Meeting & Convention last December as part of U.S. eventing’s strategic plan, spearheaded by Erik Duvander, U.S. Eventing Director of High Performance. The new program looks to create a “culture of competitiveness” and provide a more clearly defined pathway for eventing athletes in the United States. [Team Challenge Players]

Two short format CCI4*-s champions face off at Carolina after the first day of dressage.  Predictably, at this point, Liz Halliday-Sharp leads the field with Fernhill by Night, followed by last year’s winners Doug Payne and Vandiver. Liz believes “Blackie” is enjoying his job better than ever since she has decided just to do short format events with him, as that’s where he finds his happiness. Doug and “Quinn” are back together this year after taking the majority of last year off to repair some old damage in a stifle, and he’s excited to defend his title. [Champions Face off at Carolina]

With the official advent of spring, I’m happy to say that I’m seeing the first signs of grass growth in Virginia, and near the rivers, the little trees are budding, and it makes me unreasonably happy! It’s still mostly brown, and it’s still cold at night, but the days are more reasonably warm, and despite the horrible time change where I suddenly have to get up so much earlier, I’m generally more optimistic about life. Yay end of winter!

New research into stem cells have shown a possibly superior treatment for horses with tendon injuries. Stem cell researchers at the Animal Health Trust (AHT) have found positive signs that stem cells originally sourced from embryos coped well in laboratory tests when exposed to inflammation. Stem cell treatment is currently used, however we usually harvest them from the individual horse, and growing them takes weeks. Santa Anita has announced a ban on all race day medications and whips after the death of a 22nd horse. A day after reopening the training track, 3-year-old Princess Lili B broke down while breezing and broke both front legs. This is the 22nd death on these grounds in the past two-and-a-half months, an inexplicable uptick in fatal breakdowns. Many experts are considering the unusual rainfall on the track surface to be the culprit, but as of yet it is still unknown. [Santa Anita Still in Trouble]

What can you say about a top level groom who has taken care of Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum’s stable for 21 years? Anu Harrila has been the backbone of this Olympic level operation for what feels like forever, and one of the best grooms in the world. What it’s really like to take conformation photos with my horses.

Look, my horses do way more modeling than average horses, so they all learn the system of ground tying and being forced to stand square for a long time while I back up and try to get the perfect photo. However, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will prevent my horses from insisting on staring the exact opposite direction that I need from them. I could put them up against a wall and I swear to you they’d probably start licking the wall instead of staring face front with a pleasant expression. The struggle. Is real.

Having a rideable horse is the name of the game in eventing these days. Gone are the times when you could have a fairly wild horse who just killed it on cross country but wasn’t aces at the other two phases. Jan Byyny was kind enough to take some time out of her busy schedule in Aiken to give some of her top tips about creating a rideable horse, no matter what the level. My horse has this dumb thing going on, which is that he whacked his ankle one day in the field, and he’s a massive sweller, so it blew up like a balloon. He also is a tight rope walker, and a general doofy moron, so because it’s slightly bigger than usual, he keeps whacking it in turnout. He’s not lame, and there isn’t actually anything wrong with him other than swelling, but now he has to go out in a tiny field and have it wrapped so he stops hitting himself. Can somebody explain to him how stupid this is? Nothing is so resilient and yet so fragile as a horse.

A tiny palomino mare winning at the Advanced level? We’re into it. Pandora, bred and owned by Laura Boyer, recently won her first Advanced horse trials at Twin Rivers just a few weeks ago. What she lacks in stature, she makes up for in heart and love of cross country. She started in the hunter and jumper rings, but has now found her true love in Eventing under the guidance of James Alliston. [Pandora Is More Than A Pretty Face]

Eventers from Greenville County, SC are rallying around trainer Janna Ritacco in order to preserve the Riverbend Equestrian Park. Used since 2011 as an incredible resource for equestrians everywhere, the REP has been a source of pony club events and ratings, schooling shows and clinics. The facility has served as the starting place for many young riders, as well as adults enjoying equestrian sports as well. The county is planning to terminate Janna’s lease and remove all equestrian activities from the facility, and the community is trying to save it. [Save Riverbend Equestrian Park]

I can’t be the only one who looks at scenery while driving and assesses the personal value based solely on whether or not I would enjoy using it as a gallop field, right? I’m lucky to live in Virginia at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, so there are a lot of fields on my daily drives that definitely qualify as gallop quality. For a long time, common knowledge has linked stomach ulcers and cribbing together, but new scientific research shows otherwise. Cribbing is not necessarily related to stomach pH levels, but more likely just general stress. Scientists looked at the stomachs of 42 dead horses, half of which were cribbers and half were not, finding no difference in the stomach linings or acidity between the two. Due to a sharp uptick in fatalities at Santa Anita since December, all workouts and races have been cancelled indefinitely at the track. With 21 fatalities since the beginning of the winter meet on December 26th, this is a far higher number than any of the previous years, and track officials are trying to investigate the cause before resuming business as usual. Yesterday I met with a local event rider friend of mine (haaaay Lara) about the two of us taking over the organization of an unrecognized combined test that a farm down the road hosts every year in March. I’m doing the dressage judging and helping with the organization and promotion and stuff, and woah, I’m already impressed with how much work it is just to put on a little local show! Seriously, god bless people who do this for big shows and do this professionally, hug your local organizer and bring him/her flowers and chocolates next time you go to compete.

Before Todd Minikus was a household name in the show jumper world, he was just another guy riding a $1,000 OTTB. The difference was, he was riding that thousand-dollar Thoroughbred and winning all the grand prix classes with him. Thrilling was a 1980 grey Thoroughbred gelding that Todd bought sight unseen as he was out of the same mare as his previous grand prix mount. Ponies have officially hacked the system: they’re now traveling by human drawn carriage. That’s right, humans pulling ponies. And no, I’m not joking. This spring, Emma Massingale will be pulling two mini ponies across Europe in a specially adapted tricycle, from Switzerland onwards. Honestly, I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around the new FEI level labels. Every time I see an event or a result posted, I read the number of stars, and immediately have to mentally check myself and convert it into the old star system. I feel like I’m not alone in this, and it will probably persist for at least a year if not more. It just feels … weird? I’m very resistant to change in this way, I need things to be the same, you guys!

In every horse owner’s winter nightmare, two Clydesdales escaped their field and fell into a frozen over lake earlier this week. Gunther and Wilhelm broke out of their pasture in Pennsylvania and travelled over a mile from home before both falling through ice in a frozen lake. They subsequently had to be rescued using chainsaws to cut a path back to shore. Their mule friend, Janey, escaped as well but wisely declined to adventure to the frozen lake, proving once and for all that mules really are smarter. I celebrated Valentine’s Day yesterday by riding, teaching, feeding carrots to my ponies, dragging my ring and setting new jumps, hanging out with dogs, cleaning the barn, eating pasta, and taking photos. Honestly, sounds like love to me! I didn’t even eat any chocolates, but I can’t guarantee that I won’t make up for that this weekend. Not sorry!

I think that my thoroughbred, Turkey, has a split personality disorder. I’ve never had a horse that can be the sweetest, cuddliest, quietest little angel one day and then the next day just be the absolute most obnoxious animal you’ve ever seen. It doesn’t seem to be related to the weather, his work schedule, the moon cycle … I just can’t find the pattern. He’s a bit the same to ride — either you have the best ride of your life and you’re dying to tell everyone about how amazing he is, or he’s just a complete moron about something really small and insignificant for an entire hour.

Does anybody else have a horse like this? Please tell me he will grow out of it.

Interested in improving your horse’s trot? Horse & Hound has this great interview with dressage rider Sarah Millis explaining how to improve the quality and rhythm of the trot by using 10-meter circles and shoulder-in. We’re impressed by this video of Mariah Smith, age 11, and her pony Macintosh. This was Mariah’s second lesson after not riding for two months because of a broken wrist, and they made short work of this tricky serpentine exercise!

“The most challenging part of the exercise was keeping him cantering in the turns. I had to use a lot of leg. Looking at the next fence was the thing that helped me the most,” Mariah says.

Mariah trains with Jennifer Clover of Allan and Clover Sport Horses, and the video was taken at Holiday Stables in Harwood, MD. Thanks to Chelsea Spear for sharing the video with EN. Chelsea says, “I came back to the barn after taking my horse to a clinic with Chris Talley, and here is this wonderful young rider being incredibly brave. A mom myself, I was in awe of how confident and skillfully she rode that adorable pony! I had to stop and grab a video to show my horse friends!!”

On today, National Florida Day, I will say that I actually wish I was down there. I live on the side of a hill, and I would like to be able to safely walk down any hills someday soon.

We are saddened to report that a 22-year-old Scottish eventer, Natasha Galpin, died after an accident while galloping a racehorse on Jan. 15. Natasha, winner of the 2018 Scottish and Northern Novice Championships, was on the grass gallops of a training yard in Carrutherstown, Scotland, when the horse she was on ruptured an artery, caused by Gutteral Pouch Mycosis. Galpin was taken to the hospital where she passed away on Wednesday. The horse also did not survive. Our deepest condolences to Natasha’s family and friends. Or rather, Buck does. International three-day eventer and top-ranked U.S. rider Buck Davidson, aided by Silvio Mazzoni, shared his thoughts on how to ride a well-prepared show-jumping warm-up for different types of horses. “Training horses is about consistency,” Buck says. “If you want to teach your horse to jump a barrel without a bridle and saddle, you can do that. Tickets are now on sale for the 2019 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. The box office is now open for the Gloucestershire event, which runs from Wednesday 1 to Sunday 5 May. Early bird discount personal admission tickets range from £8 for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup and the first horse inspection on Wednesday to £30 on cross-country day (Saturday). Relive the 2018 USEA Convention with this video of five expert course designers discussing the future of cross country. James Atkinson led a panel including course designers Captain Mark Phillips, John Michael Durr, Gretchen Butts, Morgan Rowsell, and Cathy Wieschhoff in a discussion about the responsibilities of the course designer and the many factors that influence course design. The panel educated attendees on how the horse’s vision works and provided examples of how designers use decoration to help the horse see all four corners of the fence. The conversation then turned to terrain, covering how and why designers use terrain and how they use it to influence how the horse sees a fence. Yesterday I got on my young horse, and after three days off because of full snow coverage, I knew within approximately 10 seconds that I had to get off and go get the lunge line. I thought maybe I would survive just to ride him to the arena (it’s far away from the barn and I’m lazy) but nope. It was not meant to be. So, we lunged and roped over some little jumps and fillers, and called it a day. I’m not tryna start out my 2019 by being launched into the air, okay? Sometimes you just gotta go back to the basics.

Double WEG silver medalist Padraig McCarthy is teaching a clinic on Jan. 22-23 at Paradise Farm in Aiken, South Carolina. Tuesday is show jumping day, and Wednesday is cross country day. Retired Racehorse Project founder Steuart Pittman received the EQUUS Foundation Humanitarian Award this week. The EQUUS Foundation and the United States Equestrian Federation established the Humanitarian Award in 2009 to honor a member of the equestrian world who has devoted considerable personal time to making the quality of life of our equine partners paramount. Steuart recognized the value of Thoroughbred athletes, even as they seemed to slip out of fashion in some circles. Silva Martin is planning a comeback for herself and homebred mare, Rosa Cha W in just a few weeks. The mare suffered a freak bout of Potomac Horse Fever in 2017, resulting in founder in all four feet, and a year of stall rest and aggressive management by everyone involved for a miraculous recovery. Last year, Silva struggled with her second pregnancy with son Leo and an emergency C-section, but now in January they’re both planning on competing together again at the Grand Prix Level.
