Drop Your Stirrups, It’s Hell Week at Sharon White’s Last Frontier Farm

This was no ordinary week at Sharon White’s Last Frontier Farm, the last five days were filled with circus inspired, seat strengthening, courage testing exercises, or as Sharon prefers to call it: Hell Week. This delightful idea is the brainchild of Jimmy Wofford, and though all though all the exercises are wildly different, the goal is the same: achieving a more independent seat.

“This is Jimmy Wofford all the way. Hell week is his thing. I’ve done it with him the past four years. This is the first year I’ve done it on my own. Each year it has helped me so much with my position and the ability to know you can sit on a horse and do just about anything,” Sharon said.

“It’s such an important part of your work with horses: how your skeleton affects their skeleton. It’s amazing what you can do with just your seat and balance. That’s what it’s all about.”

Hell Week riders forfeit their reins and stirrups for the week as they are put on the lunge line. From here, they work through a collection of exercises that test their balance and strength at all three gaits.

Some examples: Windmill (arm circles), Body Twisters (arms out to the side, palms up as you twist side to side. Start slowly, then pick up the tempo), Sit ups (cross your arms, lean all the way forward to touch your head to the neck, then all the way back to touch your head to the rump), and Sharon’s personal favorite, Side Saddle (hold cantle and the pommel, then lift a leg and swing it over to one side and then the other).

Besides the physical exertion required, perfecting these exercises is just as much a brain game. “It’s a mental issue at first, and then overcoming that is huge. The sheer since of accomplishment is really satisfying for the riders too. To overcome fears is always a wonderful feeling,” Sharon said.

“It’s intense. You get sore doing it. That’s why it’s called hell week. It’s also great for the horses because it’s January, so some are pretty fresh from their holiday. It’s a good way for you to really make more of a bond with your horse. I can’t recommend it enough – even just having your coach lunge you. It’s a super, super start to the beginning of the year to get your position stronger.”

Calling All Floridians! Demo Horses & Riders Needed for USEA Educational Symposium

If you’ve ever dreamed of riding with German eventing great Andreas Dibowski, then this is your lucky day. The USEA is looking for demo horses and riders for their Educational Symposium, held February 17-20 at Barnstaple South in Ocala, Florida.

The USEA Educational Symposium is a mega event hosting experts for the Young Event Horse, Future Event Horse and Instructors’ Certification Program portions. Read on to see the demo positions they are looking for.

ICP Symposium

Who: Riders with experience at Beginner Novice – Advanced.

When: Feb 17-18

What: Andreas Dibowski will teach dressage on Monday followed by show jumping and cross country on Tuesday.

How: All interested riders should fill out an ICP Demo Rider Registration Form and send to Lauren Gash at [email protected]. The ICP demo rider fee is $125 per ride/lesson.

YEH Symposium

Who: Horses at any skill level and at any age, though they prefer five years or older AND proven Advanced/five-star horses to demonstrate a successful gallop.

When: Feb 19

What: The YEH symposium will be split into three portions: dressage, jumping and gallop. All horses — from amateur friendly to upper level — are welcome to sign up. Yours might even be selected by Dibowski to ride himself.

How: Interested owners please fill out this form and send to Claire Kelley at [email protected]. There is no fee for YEH demo horses, but riders must register themselves for the Symposium here.

FEH Symposium

Who: Younger horses, preferred age 1-4.

When: Feb 20

What: Susan Graham White and Robin Walker will be the lead clinicians for Thursday, February 20 with the main focus being on judge testing and the assessment of a future event horse.

How: For anyone interested in signing up their young horse (ages 1-4) as a demo horse for the FEH Symposium, please fill out this form and send to Claire Kelley at [email protected]. There is no fee for FEH demo horses, but owners must register themselves for the symposium here.

In Open Preliminary at Majestic Oaks H.T. in Reddick, Florida, Lauren Kieffer Nicholson and her veteran five-star and Olympic partner Veronica were the overnight leaders after dressage and show jumping on a penalty score of 26.7. David Frechette AKA The Horse Pesterer was on hand to capture many of the riders on film, and for Lauren’s test his commentary made us giggle.

“The rider’s name on this list is Lauren Nicholson … not sure … oh that’s Lauren Kieffer! And this must be her young … oh this is Veronica!”

International Horse Community Rallies to Aid Australian Fire Relief

Devastating bushfires continue to burn in Australia as two of the largest blazes merged into one Thursday night, creating a new “megafire” that spans 1.5 million acres. The death toll has risen to include at least 25 people, and at least 14.5 million acres have been destroyed. The University of Sydney has estimated that up to 1 billion animals have been affected or killed by the blaze.

Many Australian eventers have suffered from the summer bushfire, including five-star eventer Megan Jones, whose Hallmark Farm facility burned shortly before Christmas. In an effort to aid the affected equestrian community, a fund, The Equestrian Fire Relief Australia fund was launched fundraise for emergency relief.

Riders from around the world have heralded the creation of the Fund. EFRA Ambassadors include esteemed equestrians such as Martin Fuchs (SUI), Christian Ahlmann (GER), Patrick Kittel (SWE) and his wife Lyndal Oatley (AUS), Michael Jung (GER), Ingrid Klimke (GER), Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS), Andrew Hoy (AUS), Chris Burton (AUS), William Fox-Pitt (GBR), Sam Watson (IRL), David O´Connor (USA), Astier Nicholas (FRA), Carl Hester (GBR) and Charlotte Dujardin (GBR).

Australian Olympic gold medalist Andrew Hoy has been especially supportive of the initiative. “To see my home country going up in flames, to see the suffering of people, wildlife, and all other animals is just devastating. I have received so many messages from people suffering losses across the affected areas and I am heartbroken for all of them,” he said.

“The Australian Equestrian Community so urgently needs the help of the international equestrian community – financially, but also morally! I hope with this campaign we will be able to make a difference, show our support, and get much-needed finances to the people affected.”

Phillip Dutton and Boyd Martin have also extended support and heartfelt messages to their home country.

“For anyone that has horses in their life, they can truly understand the absolute devastation that is being felt by the fires in Australia. There is an absolute helpless feeling across a sunburnt country. I have personally been through the horrors of fire, and it is something that can truly destroy the spirit. In my experience, the only thing that kept me going was the support of the equestrian community that is worldwide. I urge anyone to contribute to this heartfelt fund.” Boyd said.

Fundraising is the EFRA’s primary goal, but they also have hopes of providing moral support during this distressing time. All funds raised by the EFRA will be dispensed via local emergency and recovery committees in Australia.

Based in Canberra, Jocelyn King, a Canberra local equestrian, will act as the EFRA Coordinator supported by volunteers nationally and internationally along with Kiah Consulting and Kiah Equine and the Advisory Board for the Fund, John Glenn (Chairman), Mike Etherington-Smith, Stuart Tinney, and Stefanie Hoy.

How You Can Help

Donations of any size are welcomed at this link. To date, the Fund has raised $57,803.55.

Want to help with the rehabilitation of wild animals? WIRES Wildlife Rescue is on the ground helping injured wildlife, while WWF Australia has pledged to restore the homes of koalas, giving the species a chance of survival. Finally, the Australian Red Cross is providing emergency relief for those affected by the devastation.

Tuesday Video from Flexible Fit Equestrian USA: Badminton’s Newest XC Addition, The ‘Broken Bridge’

This time of year, the formidable Badminton cross country track goes from laid on on paper to physically constructed on site. Course designer Eric Winter and course builder James Willis and his team begin to make dreams a reality, and this year they’ve decided to bring something old school to the modern era with a completely new fence called the “Broken Bridge.” Normally, the Badders team prefers to keep all changes under wraps until closer to the event, but they’ve given us this little preview, as a treat.

“The creative thinking behind the bridge as well as some of the other new fences is that they will offer a trip down memory lane for spectators and competitors, whilst also creating a challenge for the modern day event horse,” Eric said.

“Presenting a track that is a real spectacle for the many people who don’t understand the technicalities of strides, but love watching Badminton’s cross country phase is really important too. That’s what I think big, iconic, show stopping fences like the Broken Bridge will do. It’s dramatic looking fences like this that really make a course exciting to ride as well as watch.”

First Look at Entry List for $50,000 Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field

After a tremendously successful inaugural year, the $50,000 LiftMaster Eventing Grand-Prix at Bruce’s Field returns February 29 – March 1, 2020 at the Aiken Horse Park. It’s the area’s only eventing showcase, and EN has a sneak peek of the entry list.

The United States and Canada once again claim a healthy proportion of entries, including 2019 winner Liz Halliday-Sharp, who has confirmed she plans to defend her title with Deniro Z. We also welcome two British entries in William Fox-Pitt, who placed third last year with Sandro’s Star, and first-timer Tom Crisp.

The showcase is USEF recognized held at the Advanced level. Dressage is scheduled for the morning of Friday, February 28. Show jumping will follow on Friday afternoon with a course set at Advanced height and designed by Michel Vaillancourt. Cross country will be held Saturday, March 2. On Saturday you can also enjoy a beer fest which will double in size at this year’s event, as well as live music following cross country.

Capt. Mark Phillips will again design the track, which is promised to carry an Aiken theme throughout again this year. Organizers have also confirmed that we can expect two new jumps constructed by Eric Bull.

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners has stepped up to sponsor the High Point Thoroughbred Award, which includes a $5,000 purse for the top three placing Thoroughbreds.

Ride for Charity will be a major aspect of the event again in 2020, and riders will have the opportunity to represent and benefit local charities.

Black Country Quantum Saddle 17.5 MW

Selling this nice saddle since I no longer own the horse it was fitted for. It’s in really good condition and very comfy. It has seen very little use over the last few years. It was originally fitted for a horse with significant withers and large shoulders. Since it’s wool flocked with wither gussets, it can easily be customized for your horse. Located in Florida.

Aachen doesn’t just deal in top-end equestrian sport – it’s a display of theatrics, as well. From the novelty ride and drive class, which teams up showjumpers, eventers, and combined drivers under the lights in the cavernous main arena to the opening and closing ceremonies, it’s all designed to be a spectacle. • Instead of leaving after the eventing wrapped, I stuck around for the final day of the show – after all, who can resist the opportunity to stand in that main arena for the Aachen Grand Prix, one of the most coveted prizes in showjumping? Not could I resist the inherent madness of the closing ceremony, in which dozens of excitable competition horses are piled into the arena and everyone – riders and spectators alike – is given a hanky to wave in order to bid the show farewell for another year. Truly odd but absolutely excellent. • Honestly, when I finally cork it – probably as a result of too much caffeine, too little sleep, and a wildly overexciting five-star result – chuck a handful of my ashes out at Aachen. And then tip a free mojito over them, just for good measure. • (Worth noting, I think, that Aachen provided plenty of worthy additions to “To All the Sausages I’ve Loved Before”, though I did find I was starting to base my diet around increasingly ludicrous-looking bratwurst. No one does eventing for the dressage! It’s the hardest part but I appreciate how it really taxes the brain of both horse and rider- especially an amateur rider on a green horse.Yesterday I learned how to feel her fishtail her rear end as she wanted to move her haunches out (second video) and more importantly how to correct it (first video). It takes patience and tact – especially on the part of the trainer! And a willingness to learn on both the horse and rider’s part. And remember the horses only do this for us. Such a rewarding day and a real breakthrough moment. I also tried a micklem bridle for this session as we have struggled with bits and bridles and her head and neck were so much steadier. New Year’s Eve News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

Dear Eventing Family in Australia and all over the world, Australia, it’s people and wildlife are currently suffering terrible devastation from the bushfires. These fires have burnt thousands of hectares, destroyed homes and taken lifes of humans and animals. Our fellow Olympian Megan Jones and her family, who are based near Adelaide in South Australia, had a terrible bush fire going through their property. Luckily Megan, James and their team were able to evacuate the property in time so no humans or animals got hurt. Nevertheless, the fire destroyed large parts of the property and paddocks. Many friends, neighbours and the local equestrian community have been around to help and support them, which is wonderful! True Aussie spirit! 💪 Megan and James created a large Cross Country schooling facility at Hallmark Farm which enabled riders of all levels – from Grassroots to top level – to train and receive education. This facility has been burned to the ground – so Megan needs the support of the Eventing family to rebuild it. Bush fires have been ravaging Australia over the last few weeks. Olympian Megan Jones found herself in the path of the fires, and thankfully all humans and horses were safely evacuated, but her facility was completely burned, including their all levels cross country schooling which enabled many riders to receive an education over fences and terrain.
