EN’s Top 10 Videos of 2020, #9: Charlotte Dujardin’s Dreamy Horsey Holiday

We’re looking back on the wild year that has been 2020 and counting down the top-viewed videos shared on EN this year. Here’s #9!

After ensuring we kept back to a distance that he was comfortable with, the giraffe was later happy to show us his lands, but at his pace.

How incredible they are! 😍

Posted by Charlotte Dujardin on Thursday, February 6, 2020

Charlotte Dujardin recently took the trip of a lifetime to Kenya where she saw some of the world’s most beautiful creatures. Her view was especially unique as she toured the landscape from the top of her borrowed horse, Kyoto, a Boerperd/Friesian.

Our favorite part? Charlotte took the opportunity to school some cross country:

Go Charlotte. Go eventing.

Nope, not arguing with this giraffe 😂

First ride alert! Three month old Payton Granquist had her very first ride with upper level eventer and mom JordĂĄn Linstedt Granquist this week. She looks right at home on the back of a horse. Now the only question is, will she follow in her mom’s shoes as an eventer?

“My application credentials (there are many options but this should cover it). A few years ago now but still very relevant!! I’ve had some utter disasters since but avoided the camera in most. I promise to catch a few more in 2021 for the sake of the brotherhood.” – Anne Slater.

“A blast from the past – When your pony is expelled from Pony Club for being too naughty… So you have to borrow a slightly less naughty pony and get put in the ‘shit children’ group 😂 I spent most of pony club being bucked off of my jumping cob and landing on my head! Feet in the air like you just don’t care!” – Lauren Criddle.

“When your horse chips in an extra stride at the last second and bounces you out of the saddle. He then proceeded to turn around and jump all the fences on the way home 🤣 He’s gone to 2* since this!” – Katherine Stewart.

“I just want to jump on and say I’m so glad I found this page! Too often I found myself taking myself too seriously and forgetting to just have fun! This photo has somewhat haunted me in that this fall was a sort of the undoing of my stadium confidence. My horse had never stopped, I had never fallen from him at a jump like this and at a show no less. So thank you to all for reminding me when can fall, laugh at ourselves, and that the goal is to have FUN! These photos are in fact funny to see now. I’m grateful we were both ok and went on to jump big things anyway. And I’m grateful to find a group where it isn’t all rainbows and butterflies but we laugh and ride on.” – Bobbi Lynn Westbrook.

Equestrian sport is only made possible due to those who work with horses, but unfortunately our industry does not always treat these individuals appropriately. Many grooms are paid below national wages and working with few days off. Awareness has increased around the subject, but there’s a lot more work to be done. [The Change Is Too Slow]

Tokyo 2020 Organizers and Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach have said they expect the Olympic Games to go on next year with spectators present. Having hosted professional baseball games, the Organizers believe they can host a “reasonable” number of fans. The IOC has also said that should a vaccine become available before then, they’ll help foot the bill, though it won’t be required for international athletes. [Tokyo 2020 to have ‘reasonable’ crowd size, IOC President Bach says]

Many riders have become critical of US Equestrian, saying it caters to the elite in the sport. #EventerProblems Vol. 243, Presented by Haygain: Spooktober

It’s spooky season! And some of our horses take that… very literally. Cooler weather and crunchy leaves means it’s time to grab your neck strap, folks.

Sorry to whoever at @smartpak had to engrave this 💀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Enzo takes his hard keeper status very seriously and does his best to fling his hay net (and when it offends him, his grain bucket) as far as possible away from his paddock. Then he stares mournfully at it like he’s starving until someone with thumbs comes to his rescue 🤦🏼‍♀️ And of course, he doesn’t like when his hay is *dirty* from touching the ground, plus needs hay in front of him 24/7, so has to have the hay net (which, I’ll add, is a heavy duty SmartPak one that he somehow manages to undo the clip it’s hanging from). This is now securely chaining it to the fence 😂

It feels like FALL 🍁here in NC and while talking about weather may seem boring, this is literally my favorite time of year. The late late summer time where everything is still green but you feel that cool humidity-free chill in the air. Give me all the cozy sweaters and caramel apples (yes dentists love sweets too!). 😅 While the thought of shorter days and freezing temps makes me shudder, I’m gonna enjoy every last bit of this incredible time of year. Here’s to hoping for a mild winter and lots of good conditioning for me and my mare both! Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Pony Power!

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

Yellowhawk. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Experienced Large BN Event Pony

Yellowhawk is a 10-year-old nice mover and scopey jumper. He was successfully competed in recognized events by a Junior rider who is now off to college and wants to find him new partner and good home. In 2019 they placed 15th out of a field of 55 in the Kentucky Horse Park AEC – Junior Rider Beginner Novice Division. They went clear cross country and stadium. We are looking for a rider who will make a good fit for him – Yellowhawk is very talented and best suited for an ambitious Junior kid or small adult rider who has confidence, determination and is willing to ride him consistently. A good home is essential. Located in Ohio.

Toby. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Cute, brave, and fun pony!

Toby is a 7-year-old, 12-13.2 hh (ish) black pony. I am uncertain of his breed but he is ADORABLE so does it really matter?

He has competed at the Beginner Novice level, placing in the top 10 almost every time! Cute, fancy little mover with tons of potential for dressage! However he really enjoys jumping the sticks. He’s never stopped and never had any cross country penalties.

He is not for beginners or a “nervous” rider. He requires a tactful ride, and someone that doesn’t get intimidated by an enthusiastic jumper! So a bold, confident kid or a small adult wanting to get confidence at lower levels. I adore this pony and will be very picky about where he ends up. I don’t want to sell him, but financially I have to. **references will be required**

Toby has been trained and shown by an dventing professional. UTD on vaccines, and dewormings. Currently barefoot and lives outside 24/7. Stays fat on air! Located in Indiana.

Erin Lea’s Blue Diamond

If you are looking for a prospect that will excel in any ring then Malcolm is your pony! Malcolm is a 13.3-hand 6-year-old Welsh cross gelding. He has easy, automatic changes and stunning movement that will get you noticed in the show ring. Malcolm hacks out alone or in company and while he is still green is brave to the fences. He is currently jumping 2’3-2’6 courses at home. Would be suitable for an amateur in a program, confident junior, or professional. Malcolm is more than happy to go in a frame or on a long rein and has a large step that makes it easy to coast down lines. Loads, ties, stands for the farrier and vet. Is currently barefoot with no known soundness issues and current x-rays available to serious buyers. Malcolm is a wonderful pony looking for his new home. Price will increase with show miles and experience. Videos and photos upon request. Located in North Carolina.

Dany is a 7-year-old 14.1hh quarter horse mare. Competed BN/N level eventing with a junior. She is brave and has scope for 1.10! She’s the horse you can ride off up the mountain alone in a halter and lead rope, but then go win a jump off round with her handy turns. She likes to be speedy and has some big hops so best for the scrappy kid who’s ready to have fun! Located in North Carolina.

Area III Champions Crowned at Poplar Place Farm

Over the weekend, Poplar Place Farm in Hamilton, Ga. played host to the 2020 Area III Championships. In such a bustling part of the country, 8 titles were up for grabs. Here’s who won what:

Melanie Smith and Shakedown Street may have been a division of one, but they certainly would’ve beat the best of them anyhow in the Intermediate Championships. Melanie and “Mouse,” the 10-year-old Candian Thoroughbred (Survivalist x My Dear Rose) earned a 39.5 on the flat and added only 1.2 cross country time penalties to it across the jumping phases.

Karl Slezak won the Preliminary Championship with Hot Bobo, a 7-year-old Irish Sport Horse (VDL Arkansas x Taneys Leader) who he owns. They lead wire-to-wire on their dressage score of 28.70.

The Junior Training Rider Championship went to Brayden Edmonds and Jay of Diamonds. Brayden and the 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse by King of Diamonds earned a 29.5 on the flat and added nothing to it to win.

Amelia Ebhardt won the Senior Training Rider Championship with Fernhill Celebrity, a 9-year-old Westphalian – Holsteiner (Ampere x Djolie-AL), on a score of 24.1 — the lowest finishing score across all divisions.

My Bearington showed what he was made of this weekend to score the 1st place in the USEA Area lll JR. Novice champs!!! • • • After him being quite a sensitive and crazy horse in the dressage warm ups he went into the arena and proved that he was built to win earning a 25(of course after rearing at the gate to get into the arenas🤦‍♀️) XC he was a total beast as usual and absolutely loved all the fun galloping paths. Showjumping was a very tight arena and Bear is a tad bit of a hot head but he came back to me and jumped his heart out getting double clear and finishing on his dressage score carrying the first place the whole weekend and finishing in first!!! 💙🏅🏅🥇🥇 • Also big congrats to the whole SHF gang that competed this weekend especially @sc.eventer who is the best videographer, groom, and annoying distraction 😆 (You and Donna killed it) #bewareofthebear #timetomoveup #arealllchamps #hearthorse #littlecrazy #butwelovecrazy #youcanhearmytrainerfrom3milesaway #dutchwarmblood #bearjustwantstojumpeverythingandanything #ourbrainsarentmentfordressage #XCmachine #bearisliterallythecoolest #nowiwoulddefinitlyfightyouonthat #hothead #conguistadorll

Marissa Griffin and Conguistador took home the title and bragging rights in the Junior Novice Rider Championships. This is a new partnership for Marissa and the 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Van Gogh x Wisconsin), as they only competed for the first time together in June, but their score of 24.5 from start to finish was unbeatable.

Mary Bess Davis and Starry Night, an 8-year-old Warmblood (Indian Art x Kip Winowned) by Deborah Grosenbaugh, were the winners of the Novice Horse Championship, finishing on their dressage score of 27.3.

I am so proud of Galapagos for his performance at the Area III Championships this weekend. He put in a great dressage test in the Novice division, and then took on cross country and show jumping like it was nothing. He always gives his best and makes competing fun; he has earned himself a relaxing vacation and lots of cookies. @poplarplacefarm put on a great show this weekend, and I am thankful for all the staff and volunteers who made it possible. Big thanks to @le_bonheur_equestrian for your help at home and at the show, and congratulations on your great competition with Emmaretto CSF. Thanks as always to Pamela Taylor for your continued support of me and Galapagos. And thank you @thatbayarab11 for coming with us to help with the horses and Alejandrina so we could focus on riding!

Anna Bosworth and Galapagos took home top honors in the Senior Novice Rider Championship. The 9-year-old Hanoverian (Graf Top II x Kamet) earned a 27.9 on the flat and jumped clear over both days for the win.

Chelsey Sawtell piloted Deb Warner’s Toto’s Weather Tamer to win the Beginner Novice Horse Championship. The 4-year-old Warmblood with impressive bloodlines — Totilas x Baquette — went pillar-to-post on a score of 29.

Sidnee Milner and My Valentine, a 16-year-old Welsh mare, won the Junior Beginner Novice Rider Championship on a three-day result of 28.1.

The unrecognized show has become more and more popular in recent years. It’s more cost effective, yes, but it also doesn’t promise the consistency in courses and officials that riders have come to expect with recognize competitions. Both have their place in our show calendar, certainly. [Why Not Both? The Complementary Roles Played by Recognized and Schooling Competitions]

Corners are an accuracy question on cross country. They can be tricky, and a momentary lapse can cost you 20 penalties pretty easily. That’s why you’ve got to take the time at home to make sure you won’t be that big corner’s next victim. [#SundaySchool: how to avoid penalties at corner fences]

Have you heard of Susan Oakes? She’s a certified badass. Aside from currently holding the world record for highest side-saddle puissance, she’s also known for dabbling in Skijoring and point-to-point racing. Basically, anything she can do astride, she’ll also do sidesaddle. [I Won’t Let My Diagnosis Hold Me Back from My Bucket List]

Luckaun Quality has returned to competition in 2020, this time with Bourke Eventing’s barn manager and head groom Catherine Paladeau. After a diagnosis of EPM kept him out as an alternative at the 2018 World Equestrian Games, it’s been a long ride back to full health, and now he and Catherine are having a blast. Allie Sacksen and Sparrow’s Nio. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

Still so devastated and sad for Allie Sacksen who lost her friend Sparrow’s Nio yesterday. Nio was a spicy Connemara who Allie has shared a long partnership. At 15.3-hands, he might not have been as big as other five-star horses, but he had one enormous heart. Their partnership inspired many riders around the country, and if there’s one thing I’ll remember about them, it might not be their many competition accolades, but their rock solid friendship. “A girl and her pony.”
