High Praise for GMHA Clinic: ‘It’s Like Going Camping With My Horse’

GMHA’s annual Festival of Eventing kicked off this Monday with a three-day long eventing clinic in South Woodstock, Vermont. Thirty-three riders from Beginner Novice to Training level are working with four highly acclaimed and popular clinicians.

FEI dressage trainers Rebecca Vick and Pam Goodrich are giving semi-private dressage lessons, while veteran four-star event riders Bobby Costello and Sharon White teach gymnastics, show jumping and cross country. More than half of the participants will stay to compete in the horse trials this weekend.

Pam, who evented through Preliminary level in the 1970s, is new to the clinic this year. She appreciates the aim of the clinic to combine the three eventing disciplines. “This is a great opportunity to get well rounded and balanced in the three disciplines. Each one complements the others; they are not separate disciplines,” Pam said. “The basic training of dressage improves the show jumping as well as the cross country and helps the rider help the horse when necessary.”

Bobby Costello, chair of the selection committee for the U.S. eventing team, has taught at the clinic since its beginning six years ago. He said he has seen steady improvement in the quality of the horses: “People are doing a better job of finding horses that suit them.”

Bobby enjoys seeing the progress that people make from one year to the next. “Everybody has things they struggle with, but much more often I see riders take what they’ve learned, go home and improve on their work. They may need a refresher when they come back, but there’s definite improvement.”

The hot weather so far has not diminished the enthusiasm of the riders. Mickey Lorenzen of Connecticut is riding in the Festival of Eventing clinic for the first time on her 5-year-old Thoroughbred-cross mare. “For a young horse, this is boot camp,” she said. “It’s one of the best exposures for her I can imagine. She’s settled in quite well, taking in all the excitement.”

Another new rider this year is Rachel Medbery, also from Connecticut. “It’s great to be able to work with four really knowledgeable trainers,” she said. “I appreciate hearing what each of them has to say.”

Carolyn Charnley of Maine is a long-time participant in the clinic. For her, the excellent riding instruction is one reason she keeping coming back. “I board my horse out, so it’s fun just to hang out with him. It’s like going camping with my horse. I also come because of the close friends I’ve made here. It’s always good!”

Bobby admires the work that GMHA puts into its programs. “It says a lot for these GMHA clinics and camps that they have so many repeat customers,” he said. “GMHA is a really strong organization and its programs are well run.”

Many thanks to Joan Davis of Flatlandsfoto for providing beautiful images from the clinic. Click here to learn more about the Green Mountain Horse Association.

Another anniversary? The Kentucky Horse Park is celebrating its 40th this year! Built in 1978, the Kentucky Horse Park was designed as the world’s first park dedicated to man’s relationship with the horse. The park sits on property that has been used to raise Thoroughbreds since the early 1800s. [Kentucky Horse Park celebrates 40 years]

2018 Mongol Derby: And they’re off … well, almost. The start of this year’s 1,000-km race was delayed until Wednesday evening due to apocalypse-looking thunderstorms complete with marble-sized hail and flooding, and an undisclosed “technical difficulty.” With several U.S. riders in the mix, including some American eventers, we’ll be watching the Derby closely! Attwood Wisdom of the Week: Safety | Performance | Innovation

You could say the road to Great Meadow International 2018 was paved in Attwood footing. Well, maybe paved would not be the right word but you get the gist.   Looking back at that competition, it was truly inspiring to know so many of the competing athletes were prepping on Attwood Surfaces.

From the newly expanded arena at Phillip Dutton’s True Prospect Farm, to multi rings and gallop at Boyd Martin’s Windurra USA to Liz Millikin’s lovely Lion’s Gate Farm to Will Faudree’s spectacular Gavilan Farm. That’s a lot of footing! Because these riders depend on us so much they are much more than clients, they are our family.

We believe that a horse’s health and soundness can be greatly impacted by its daily training surface. That’s why we are constantly testing our footing to find innovative solutions for safety and performance.

Millbrook Horse Trials 2018 from Marion Latta de Vogel on Vimeo.

Millbrook Horse Trials is a special event held at the picturesque Coole Park Farm in Millbrook, N.Y. Drawing hundreds of horses and riders each August, the hard-working organizers had their hands full this year with weather that challenged the competition. But, in true insanity-in-the-middle fashion, eventers were ready to kick on rain or shine, and Marion de Vogel captured it all.

In Marion’s words: “Throughout the events of each day, I kept thinking the weather doesn’t matter. We love our horses so much and they’re so willing and have so much heart — they’ll all get through it. And they did. Here’s the Camelot version of the weekend — as I saw it.”

Go Eventing.

#EventerProblems Vol. 154 from Ecovet: We Like Your Style

Eventers are unique individuals. Like very special snowflakes, no two of us are the same. That’s one of the great things about the sport — there’s a “you do you” vibe about it that you’re just not going to find in, say, the hunter ring.

So go on out there and fly that freak flag. Be that full-grown adult wearing the same turquoise and purple cross country colors I retired when I graduated from middle school.

Rock tall socks over riding britches. Don’t let your cat judge you. He’s just jealous.

In this sport, even the most conservative outfit is … kind of weird. Just gotta own it.

And this goes for horses, too! You wear that Hannibal Lector face gear. Looks edgy.

Kick off your shoes, lose those bell boots, whatever, you do you.

LOL JUST KIDDING I TAKE IT BACK. Keep your footwear on, please.

Here are a few more of your #EventerProblems!

Watch the Advanced Riders Tackle the Millbrook Water Complex

It’s the video we’ve all been waiting for! Watch all of the horses and riders in the Advanced division at Millbrook Horse Trials take on the water complex. This is a hot spot for spectators on the course, so Tremaine Cooper had two loops through the water to give the crowds plenty to watch.

Eagle-eyed viewers will notice Daniela Mougel’s sunglasses fly off when she jumped into the water with Cecelia. She returned on foot later in the afternoon and waded around until she found them, which elicited a cheer from the crowd!

Who do you think had the best ride through the water? Let us know in the comments below. Many thanks to R.N.S. Video for providing this footage. Go Eventing.

Madeline Backus Retires Four-Star Partner P.S. Arianna

Madeline Backus announced that she has decided to retire P.S. Arianna, her 17-year-old four-star partner. An Anglo-Trakehner mare (Ibsen X Amazing Raven) bred by her farrier Dennis Ackermann and started by her mother Laura, Madeline got “Ari” as a present for her 10th birthday.

Madeline and Ari came through the levels of eventing together, culminating in completing their first CCI4* at Kentucky last year and competing at Badminton this spring.

“My beloved Ari has told me that it is time she be retired from upper-level eventing. This horse has given me more than I could have ever asked for, and I’m so thankful for the story we were able to write together. I’m saddened by the end of this epic era, but happy to watch her begin her next chapter, which I’m thinking will involve some really adorable foals,” Madeline said.

“Thank you Ari for turning my dreams into a reality and being my horse of a lifetime. You have taught me courage, patience, heartbreak, triumph, and most of all, perseverance and belief in my dreams no matter the odds. Love you always my small and mighty mare; the past 12 years have been a spectacular journey.”

Ari competed at the international level for eight seasons. In addition to contesting Kentucky and Badminton, she also finished 13th at the Jersey Fresh CCI3* and 25th at Fair Hill CCI3* in 2016. The mare also represented Area IX at the FEI North American Junior & Young Championships in 2011 and 2014.

Madeline and Ari have been based in England for much of the 2018 season thanks to funding received from two grants: the $10,000 Rebecca Broussard National Developing Rider Grant and the $45,000 Wilton Fair Grant, which is given to a rider 29 and under who has not yet ridden for a senior U.S. team.

“We will be heading back to the U.S. from England the second week of August, where Ari will live a fat and happy life on the the same grounds she frolicked as a yearling,” Madeline said.

“The more I learn about this sport, the more amazed I become at how lucky I am to have had such an incredible horse and so many influential people, mentors, friends, and companies supporting us all the way. Here’s to you, Ari, and thank you to everyone who has helped us write our story.”

We wish Madeline and Ari a safe journey home and look forward to meeting those foals. Go Eventing.

The cute chestnut in this picture is happily showing off the months of behind-the-scenes progress with an OTTB. I’ve been lucky to spend a lot of time with William, who was sourced by Lara Anderson at Full Gallop Farm, and it’s only fitting that he completed his first three-phase there with owner Susan Thomas over the weekend. He’s so sweet and willing, the challenge is getting all those pieces to fit together. Cheers to your OTTBs!

Got that Friday feeling?! We are jumping into the weekend like Murdock 😂😂😂#murdocksadventures

Posted by Kelly Guy Equestrian on Friday, August 3, 2018

Kelly Guy is a trainer and instructor from Leicester, England who is helping her daughter bring along Murdock, an adorable Welsh Section C pony. Murdock is a scopey little dude with springs for legs (as clearly demonstrated) who is proving to be a very game and talented jumper.

Last week, Kelly took him out for his very first cross country school and hopped on him for his first few fences prior to handing the reins over to her daughter. Good thing she did, because Murdock decided that there was a monster living under that diminutive black pipe fence and that the best way to avoid it would be to fling his little body as far over it as he could! Drama, much?

Fortunately, Murdock isn’t usually that dramatic and after Kelly introduced him to a few new fences, he finished out the cross country schooling session like a total superstar with Kelly’s daughter in the irons. Take a look at the rest of their adventure below:

Last night we made a last minute decision to take Murdock for a play at Aylesford Equine X Country Course he was a little superstar that tried his heart out bless him. 😍

Helmet Cam: Ride Around Millbrook with Doug Payne and Getaway

Ride around Tremaine Cooper’s Millbrook Advanced cross country course with Doug Payne and Lisa Wall’s Getaway in this helmet cam courtesy of Cambox. “Flynn,” an 11-year-old Oldenburg by Contendro, added 1.2 time penalties to his dressage score to complete on 26.6 and finish second.

Only three pairs caught the time, and Doug and Flynn finished 5 seconds over the optimum time of 6 minutes, 21 seconds — 2 seconds faster and they would have won. Check out their super inside line at the water complex at the 5:15 marker in the video. Doug was the only rider to attempt it in the Advanced division and nailed it.

Doug and Flynn received a Jacqueline B. Mars International Competition Grant from the USET Foundation to compete at Boekelo CCIO3* in October and used Millbrook as a prep run. We wish them all the best as they gear up for the trip to the Netherlands. Go Eventing.
