In Memory of Andromaque: ‘Sweet Dreams, Princess’

The U.S. eventing community has lost another great horse this week in Will Faudree’s retired upper-level partner Andromaque, who was euthanized yesterday due to complications from colic. “Missie,” a 16-year-old Irish Thoroughbred mare (Anshan x Gortnagale, by Strong Gale) owned by Jennifer Mosing, represented the U.S. overseas for four seasons, capturing hearts around the world with her tenacity.

“It is from a broken heart that we say we had to say goodbye to Andromaque, our perfect Missie. After falling in her field and injuring her hip in early October, the toughest mare I’ve ever met couldn’t fight off the complications that followed and ended in colic. Everything she did in her life she did with all she had, a true soldier,” Will said.

“I was once asked if I had to compare her to a movie star who would it be, and without hesitation she was Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada) — incredibly stylish, all business and you never crossed her. She was an amazing horse to compete, and I will never forget the honor of leaving the start box with her. Her cross country rounds were all business, her dressage was matter of fact and her show jumping was all effort.”

Missie completed 15 events at the three-star level and and one event at the four-star level during her career with Will, which began after he took the ride from Irish rider Andrea Ryan in 2009. The mare had not had a clear cross country run at the FEI level at that point in her career, but she and Will quickly formed a partnership that made them a formidable cross country combination.

Their notable results include finishing 12th at Boekelo CCIO3* in 2010; 11th at Luhmühlen CIC3* and fifth at Hartpury CIC3* in 2011; 16th at Rolex CCI4*, second at Bromont CIC3* and 10th at Barbury Castle CIC3* in 2012; first at Jersey Fresh CIC3*, fifth at Saumur CCI3* and third at Richland CIC3* in 2013; and third at the Carolina International CIC3* in 2015.

Missie was short-listed for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team and named to the USEF Eventing High Performance Training Lists on numerous occasions. Will and Jennifer decided to retire “Missie” at 14 years of age following Kentucky CCI4* in 2015, when she bowed the superficial flexor tendon in her right front leg on cross country.

“When her competitive career ended she embraced motherhood with the same focus and determination,” Will said. Missie’s legacy will live on through her foal by Sir Shutterfly born last year.

“Jennifer and I together cannot thank all the people who fought for Missie throughout her life. The fantastic vets and farrier, Tom Daniel, Meghann Lustgarten, Bri Gindlesperger and the entire team at NC State, Jay Mickle and many more that were always there for her; her wonderful caretakers, Nat Varcoe-Cocks, Christina Curiale and Suzanne Konefal for keeping her in top form; and my coaches, Bobby Costello, Phillip Dutton, Mark Phillips, David O’Connor, Sandy Phillips and John Zopatti,” Will said.

“Missie, thank you from the bottom of our broken hearts. Sweet dreams, princess. I will always love you.”

Wednesday News & Notes from SmartPak

Alexandra Baugh won her first CIC2* this weekend at Virginia Horse Trials, and her little sister Victoria completed her first Beginner Novice on an actual unicorn! Curioso the pony Alexandra’s former Prelim pony. Photo courtesy of mom, Kelly Baugh.

One of my absolute favorite things about Halloween is seeing the many ways people dress up their horses and babies. So far today I’ve seen a baby as the mouse in a mousetrap, a young girl dressed as Wonder Woman, and someone who thought it would be funny to send her (or his?) toddler to preschool dressed as the clown from It. But I have to admit, I absolutely love this unicorn which gives me flashbacks to Rainbow Brite’s horse Starlite.

Your Wednesday News & Notes:

Best of the blogs: Giant, Fragile, Glorious Creatures. Lauren Sprieser’s always got a wise word or two to drop, and with one of her top developing horses narrowly escaping a colic scare, she suddenly has the right words at the right time. As strong and magnificent as our partners are, things can go south in a moment, regardless of the care we give them. [Giant, Fragile, Glorious Creatures]

The Retired Racehorse is turning into more than just a show; it’s turning into a sale of sorts. When I had the chance to buy the second horse of my lifetime eighteen months ago, I knew I wanted a Thoroughbred. I had an overly healthy budget for a TB straight off the track but I wanted a chance to ride the horse before vetting, a chance to see it in person that you can’t always do when shopping for OTTB. The RRTP is developing into a destination for buyers of TBs, where you can go and see many quality sporthorses all in one weekend, try them, and even vet them all in one venue. The eventing season is wrapping up and the familiar signs of cabin fever are already setting in. Between venturing out to do ‘normal people’ things on the weekend and seeing people sum up their years on social media, the signs are all there that the eventing year is nearly at a close. While some of these signs are specific to Britain, the rest seem all to familiar. [13 Ways]

SmartPak Product of the Day: It might not be the time of year to be thinking about buying gear for next spring, but some of the off-season sales can’t be missed. SmartPak has a deal on the Pro Choice Mesh XC Boots, which are my absolute favorite due to their lightweight, flexible fit, pliable protection, and ability to shed water. [SmartPak]

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: Washington International Horse Show Costume Class

It’s the spookiest day of the year! Which means no, I cannot get enough of horses dressed in costume (as my own horse knows well enough). In honor of Halloween, let’s take a look at the popular $35,000 International Jumper Accumulator Costume Class, hosted at last week’s Washington International Horse Show.

This competition is filled with top pairs duking it out in full garb. This year, Dracula, aka Beat Mändli, was out for blood and ultimately took the win with Dibatsja. But there were many other celebrity appearances including the Mother of Dragons, My Little Pony’s Rainbow Dash + Pinky Pie, and my personal favorite, The Hamburglar. Watch above for Dracua’s winning performance as well as an overview of the costumes. Let us know your favorites in the comments.

Jumper Nation’s Lorraine Jackson was on the ground throughout #WIHS, and you can check out her photo gallery: “Every Rider, Every Angle from WIHS Costume Jumper Class, Presented by Draper Therapies” here, and and follow all of her Washington International Hors Show coverage here.

JJ Sillman: 400 Reasons Why I Love Eventing

The hands-down best thing anybody has posted on Facebook in recent memory is this massive 400-photo gallery by JJ Sillman, titled “Reasons Why I Love Eventing.”

“Since there is a lot of negativity going around about eventing right now, I figured I would give everyone 400 reasons why I have loved eventing all of the years I have gotten the honor of photographing it,” she explains. “This is not even all of my happy reasons, either. I have surrounded myself with the best people and I hope I will continue to be so lucky for the rest of my life.”

EN is honored to share JJ’s gallery. “I would love it to be seen everywhere,” she says. “It made me so happy to make and I’m glad it’s made others happy. I love our sport.”

Thank you, JJ, for this timely yet timeless reminder that at the bottom of it all, we all just want the same thing: happy and healthy horses, a thriving sport, and a supportive community with whom to share our smiles.

From grassroots to the four-star level, all around the world, we ARE the Eventing Nation. United we stand; divided we fall. Let’s work together in a positive, constructive way to keep the reasons why we love this sport intact.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: SoCal Breeder’s Cup Edition

The 34th annual Breeder’s Cup World Championships take place this weekend at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in California. The racing kicks off on Friday, November 3rd as over 150 horses vie for a piece of the $28 million in purse money during “the richest weekend in sports”.

From Santa Anita, to Los Alamitos, to Del Mar, Southern California is hot spot for Thoroughbred racing. If you’re headed out that way for the Breeder’s Cup festivities and also happen to be in the market for your next equine partner, there are lots of options to check out. Here are three SoCal horses waiting to start new careers:

Atila’s War (Bamaha BreezeMarwah (GB), by King’s Best): 2014 16.1-hand California bred gelding.

Clean legs, solid build, and no vices — this sparkling chestnut may not have placed in any races, but he’s ready for a second chance at a new career. His connections say he’s very mature and classy for a three-year-old and will make someone a nice sport horse prospect. Volunteers who have seen him say he’s a doll and has a very kind eye!

Cali Gold (Dixie ChatterAta Dynaformer, by Dynaformer): 2015 15.3-hand California bred filly

The name says it all! This young one is a total blank slate, having never been started under saddle for race training or otherwise. She’s still young and could grow beyond her current 15.3-hand stature. According to her owners, she has an even temperament and a great brain so starting this girl up should be enjoyable.

Summers Dignity (Unbridled ManAnn T, by Siberian Summer): 2010 16.1-hand California-bred mare

This mare has only just come off the track after earning almost $50,000 in 25 starts. Her owner and trainer has enjoyed riding her and says she’s “ready to take on anything.” A sound, solid girl with no vices — this almost-war horse could be your next event partner.

Happy Halloween, EN! You may recognize this dashing dragon from his previous appearances at the CCI4* that is the Kentucky Three-Day Event. Now “Rover” aka “Dragon” spends his days teaching up and comers about the sport. He and his new rider Amanda Gardiner won their first schooling event together this weekend in costume. Way to go you two! Who else has dressed their four-legged friends up this Halloween?

Heads up Aiken! Full Gallop needs volunteers for the Nov. 5th horse trial. Volunteers earn cross country schooling vouchers, which can be saved up to cover entry fees for one of their many events. They are also still accepting horse trial entries as well as entries for a schooling dressage tests on Saturday! [Volunteers Needed at Full Gallop]

Since 2008, only 13 women have won four-star events and now France’s Gwendolen Fer joins these ranks. She stood atop the podium this weekend at Pau as the only French woman to win at this level in the last decade. Equirating’s breaks down a few #girlpower stats for us [Fabulous Female 4* Winners]

Remembering Crackerjack: A Life in Photos

From left, Lucy Boynton Lie, Mike Pendleton, Crackerjack and Boyd Martin at Pau 2016. Photo by Libby Law Photography.

Emotions within the global eventing community have been running high in the wake of the loss of Boyd Martin’s mount Crackerjack at Pau on Saturday. As a unified community whose common denominator is a shared love for these incredible animals and a passion for the sport, please join us in respectfully saluting the life of an extraordinary equine athlete.

“Crackerjack had a wonderful story,” Boyd reflected in a statement. “He was bred by Lucy [Boynton] and campaigned up to Prelim by her son Colin. Unfortunately, Colin passed away and Crackers was sent to me to sell. Lucky for me Lucy decided to kick on with the horse, and what a ride it’s been. Crackers has taken me all over the world and given Lucy some wonderful memories.”

Our thoughts continue to be with Boyd, Lucy, the Windurra team and all who knew and loved this special horse. Boyd and Crackers twice contested Kentucky and Pau in addition to tackling Badminton and Luhmühlen. The look on this pair’s faces as they tackled four-star events around the world says it all …

Rest in peace, Crackers.

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Lainey Ashker’s Virginia Horse Trials CCI1* Helmet Cam

“I wouldn’t sell this horse for a million dollars,” said Lainey Ashker after stripping the saddle from Call Him Paddy, having just ridden double clear across country in the horse’s first CCI1*.

Lainey’s mom, Valerie, found “Patrick” for her as a Thoroughbred Makeover project for the 2015 competition. Since then, he’s moved up the levels with Lainey and just finished 8th in the CCI1*-B division at the Virginia Horse Trials this weekend after adding just 3 time penalties from show jumping onto their dressage score.

The little 15.3-hand gelding has scope to spare and cockiness to match his athleticism. Lainey has dubbed him her “Five-Star Hamster” given his ‘I’ve got this’ attitude and small stature. She has said previously that Patrick very much reminds her of her now-retired Advanced and CCI4* partner, Anthony Patch (better known as “Al”).

We hope to see Lainey and Patrick up at the top levels someday! In the meantime, enjoy their helmet cam from this weekend:

What’s In Your Arena? Presented by Attwood: Jumping Exercise ‘Pinspiration’

What’s in Your Arena? is an EN series sponsored by Attwood Equestrian Surfaces in which riders share their favorite jumping exercises. It’s easy to get stuck in a training rut, and we hope this will inspire you with fresh ideas that you can take home and incorporate into your own programs. Have an exercise to share? Email it to [email protected]

When I think of Pinterest, I think a place where desperate housewives swap gluten-free casserole recipes, showboat DIY craft projects, and try to one-up each other on toddler birthday party decor … or just scrapbook together imaginary alternative lives. But forget what you’ve heard — the image collecting website can actually be a super resource for desperate eventers as well!

Specifically, eventers desperate for fresh jumping exercises for their arenas. A quick search for “horse jumping exercises” or similar unveils a wonderland of “pinspiration” — dozens of grids and jumping setups from a variety of sources to motivate and inspire.

Since EN’s “What’s in Your Arena?” series has accumulated a pretty big stack of exercises by now itself, we set it up with its very own Pinterest board. Check it out!
