Product Review: Horseware Rambo Fly Buster Vamoose Fly Sheet

The Horseware Rambo Fly Buster Vamoose looks stylish, and works fabulously. Model is also sporting the Rambo Plus Flymask Vamoose. Photo by Kate Samuels.

Flies: a fact of life in the horse world, and there’s no getting around them. Even if you live far away from any cattle, in a pristine environment with no overpopulation and a muck heap miles away from your barn, you’ll have flies, and they will attack your horses. That’s why we have Horseware to come to our rescue, and save us from the madness.

With the Rambo Fly Buster Vamoose Fly Sheet, Horseware has really stepped up the fly sheet game. All of my previous complaints about the design, fit, and fabric of fly sheets in general have been addressed, suitably modified, and then they went further and gave it little details that really matter for overall functionality.

Let’s start with what I consider to be the coolest feature: the self healing blanket fabric. How many times have you brought a horse in from the field only to find that he has rolled on a stick and ripped his fancy new fly sheet in half? Once is too many times, but with this blanket, you don’t have to worry, because holes and indents are easily fixed, and the fabric remains as strong as ever.

Charlotte Dujardin uses the Rambo Fly Buster Vamoose sheet for Blueberry and all her other horses, and loves them so much, she took some time to make this video for her Instagram account. This video perfectly shows how the blanket self heals, so you won’t be irritated with little holes in your blanket every time your horse goes to roll in the field.

Secondly, this blanket has Horseware’s patented Vamoose technology, which means that the fabric has been treated with Permethrin. This is odorless and invisible, but has been proven to repel mosquitos, ants, ticks, flies, midges and chiggers. This treatment is long-lasting on the fabric, so it will survive being washed 70 times, and it won’t bleed off onto your horse’s skin if they sweat.

Getting into the fit of the blanket is really exciting, because as usual, Horseware has gone above and beyond. The Rambo Fly Buster has extra deep sides, a belly flap to protect against gnats, an extra long tail flap, and it fit my horse’s curves in all the right ways without being restrictive in the least. I genuinely felt like he was the most protected he could possibly be without actually being wrapped in material like a Christmas gift.

The Horseware Rambo Fly Buster Vamoose keeps your horse fly-free from every angle. Photo by Kate Samuels.

The neck cover is removable, and tapered at the top for an expert fit which you can see smoothly goes right into fly mask coverage. He’s wearing the Rambo Plus Flymask with Vamoose (review coming soon!), which makes a very nice picture.

The material of the fly sheet is actually very soft, and incredibly lightweight. This means that you can turn your horse out during the day and know that he won’t have any issues with chafing, and the addition of a sheet won’t make him unduly sweaty. There are silky soft swaths of fabric around the neckline and lining the shoulder area that also prevent unsightly blanket rubs or hair loss.

The extra long tail flap combined with the leg arches keep your horse protected front to back. Photo by Kate Samuels.

This particular horse runs very hot, and actually hates all blankets, even in the winter. I turned him out during the day for a few hours while wearing this blanket, and was pleased to see when I brought him in, that he looked neither grumpy nor sweaty, which is a great improvement upon all of our previous endeavors into the realm of fly sheets.

Even if your horses go out overnight, like mine do, the flies are out and about as long as the sun is up, and as soon as it peeks out in the morning. I can bring my horses in at 6am and they’re already stomping and shaking their heads from flies, so a fly sheet is necessary for the ones that are a little more sensitive.

This fly sheet has three straight surcingles attached to a belly guard, so you don’t have to worry about the stomach getting eaten by gnats. Photo by Kate Samuels.

The Rambo Fly Buster Vamoose sheet is on sale right now though Horseware, and you can take it home for only $200. It comes in an oatmeal color with black accents, and is available in all sizes from 60-87.

And there’s more! Horseware just launched a fly sheet trade-in for U.S. and Canadian residents. If you trade in a clean, used flysheet from ANY blanket brand, you can get $30 off any Rambo fly sheet. The trade-in runs through July 21. Click here to find a participating retailer near you.

The latest episode of the Eventing Podcast went live this morning taking a look back at the last big CCI of the spring season, Luhmuhlen. First-time four-star winner Julia Krajewski joins Nicole and Jenni to talk about her fairy-tale weekend with both her top horses, one in each division. [Luhmühlen Review Show]

Speaking of Julia Krajewski, she joins four other familiar names as primary candidates for the German European team. The usual suspects are all on the list, with Michael Jung, Bettina Hoy, Andreas Dibowski and Julia all named with two horses while Ingrid Klimke is named with one. [Germany Names Likely Squad]

SmartPak Product of the Day: One of the best things you can do in the summer is keep your skin covered up from the sun’s rays. A looser fitting white long-sleeved shirt will help deflect the UV rays and Tailored Sportsman happens to make one out of a wicking fabric with mesh under-arm panels to keep you cool while you ride. [SmartPak]

Tuesday Video from SpectraVET: Horsepower vs. Ponypower Time Trials at Luhmühlen

From the brilliant Luhmühlen event organizers who brought the world leadline cross country, here’s another inspired halftime entertainment idea: a race pitting horsepower against ponypower.

The idea, so far as I could wrap my head around without knowing an ounce of German, is that a young rider and a big name eventer are paired together to complete a two-part time trial Part 1: Kiddo and pony complete a course as fast as possible. Part 2: After dismounting, kid and big name eventer sprint out to a car, in this case a Land Rover Discovery, and they maneuver as swiftly as possible through a cones course with the grownup behind the wheel (I cut off the video about halfway through the vehicle part, oops). The pair with the fastest time wins.

Techno dance music optional. Looks super fun!

2017 Chasin’ for Chalfin Race to Benefit Lee Lee Jones and Paddy Young

Lee Lee Jones. Photo by Lisa Thomas.

When steeplechase jockey Jake Chalfin was paralyzed in a point-to-point race in 2010, his friends and family rallied to help. They created a fundraising committee to ensure Jake could focus on his rehabilitation without worrying of the expenses associated with his injuries, and this race was created as a major piece of the fundraising puzzle.

“The concept of the event started four years ago when my fundraising committee wanted to create an annual event to help offset my continued life-long medical expenses related to paralysis,” said Jake.

And thus, The Chasin’ for Chalfin was born at the Runnymede Estate in Coatesville, PA as the last leg of the five race Trail Creek Series. As the race grew, it began grew to benefit other disabled athletes or organizations that provide adaptive sporting opportunities.

The event announced that this year’s race will benefit Lee Lee Jones, who is rehabilitating following a traumatic brain injury last fall, and Paddy Young, who suffered a riding accident last month at the Radnor Hunt Races. The race will be held this Saturday, June 24th, and will offer both 5 and 10K tracks.

“It has become a wonderful and much beloved community event,” Jake continued. “After the first year we decided that we would dedicate a portion of the funds raised to support other disabled athletes or organizations that provide adaptive sporting opportunities.”

Paddy Young. Photo courtesy of Tod Marks.

“This year we would like to include both Lee Lee Jones and Paddy Young as additional beneficiaries of this race. We hope that by tapping into the two different spheres of the eventing and racing world that we can really grow this event and raise a lot of money for Paddy and Lee Lee.”

As an extra incentive this year, equestrians are invited to get a group together for a Battle of the Barns. Teams with the best overall average placing in the 5K race will earn prizes including schooling passes for Boyd and Silva Martin’s Windurra Farm. Teams must include at least three members.

Local equestrians, trade your boots for some running shoes and help support Paddy and Lee Lee this Saturday! And if you can’t be there, sign up as a “virtual runner” to pledge your support to #TeamLeeLee!

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Get Excited for Millbrook

The countdown is on to one of my favorite events of the summer: Millbrook Horse Trials at beautiful Coole Park Farm in Millbrook, New York. Scheduled for Aug. 3-6 this year, the event hosts divisions from Beginner Novice all the way to Advanced, making it one of the largest horse trials on the East Coast.

The Advanced division is also one of the most competitive national divisions of the entire U.S. season, with many key combinations using Millbrook as a prep run before going on to major fall competitions. There is simply no better event to see so many key contenders — not to mention up-and-coming young horses — in one place.

If I haven’t sold you yet, take a look at this preview video from Marion de Vogel, who always captivates us with her stunning videography work. Click here to check out the omnibus listing for Millbrook. Entries close July 18. Go Eventing.

Star-Studded Lineup Announced for Event Rider Masters at Barbury

Can Andrew Nicholson, the king of Barbury Castle, win again? Photo by Adam Dale.

Event Rider Masters announced the lineup last night for leg 3 of the series at St James’s Place Barbury International Horse Trials July 8-9 in Wiltshire, England. In addition to three North American riders — the highest number at an ERM leg thus far — Badminton winners Andrew Nicholson and Nereo will also compete.

Lauren Kieffer will ride D.A. Duras, Debbie Adams and Jacqueline Mars’ 9-year-old KWPN gelding. Hannah Sue Burnett is competing with Cooley Dream, a 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by Cooley Dream LLC. Rebecca Howard is also competing Blithe Hill Farm’s Riddle Master in the 16-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding’s first major appearance since finishing 10th at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

And there are even more names to get excited about: Rio individual silver medalists Astier Nicholas and Piaf de b’Neville, Tattersalls CCI3* winners Victoria Panizzon and Chequers Play The Game, Thomas Carlile and Blenheim 8/9-year-old winner Upsilon, Mark Todd and his Olympic partner Leonidas II, and Kentucky third-place finishers Zara Tindall and High Kingdom.

Click here to view the full entry list of 40 combinations that will compete in the Event Rider Masters CIC3* section at Barbury. All of the action will stream live on the Event Rider Masters website, starting with dressage on July 8 and concluding with show jumping and cross country on July 9.

Diarm Byrne of EquiRatings and the fabulous Nicole Brown will once again serve as your hosts, and we’ll surely hear from statistics wizard Sam Watson in the commentary box, as he is also competing aboard Ardagh Highlight following a strong fourth-place finish in the horse’s CIC3* debut in the Nations Cup at Tattersalls.

Following the first two Event Rider Masters legs at Chatsworth and Wiesbaden, Sarah “Cutty” Cohen holds a commanding lead on the series leaderboard with 51 points. Marcio Carvalho Jorge sits second with 37 points and will have the opportunity to gain ground at Barbury, where he will compete Lissy Mac Wayer. Gemma Tattersall, who sits third on the leaderboard with 30 points, can also gain valuable ground with Pamero 4.

Who will top the podium and take the largest chunk of the £50,000 in prize money at Barbury? Mark your calendars for July 8 and 9 and be sure to watch live on eventridermasters.tv. Go Eventing.
