Friday Video from SmartPak: Peep Some Team USA Tokyo Prep

They days are ticking down until Team USA horses will be taking off for Tokyo. First they’ll head to the mandatory team outing at Great Meadow at the end of this month and then they’ll hang out for a bit at the USET headquarters in Gladstone, New Jersey as they get ready for their flight. When they board their plane, they’ll first be headed to Aachen, Germany for a nine day quarantine before finally heading to Tokyo.

As for right now, team members are honing their skills in jumper land at various shows. Down in Upperville, Virginia at the Loudoun Benefit Horse Show Phillip Dutton and Team SmartPak rider Boyd Martin are enjoying some coaching from Peter Wylde. Here’s Boyd aboard the Tokyo-bound Luke 140:

Phillip also took Z out for a spin in a handful of 1.20m and 1.30m classes:

Peter Wylde also hopped aboard Boyd’s reserve horse, Tsetserleg, for a couple rounds:

Meanwhile, both Liz Halliday-Sharp and traveling reserve Doug Payne have been competing in Lexington, at the Split Rock Jumping Tour at the Kentucky Horse Park. Liz brought Deniro Z for a rock around some of the tour’s offerings and she’s back this weekend getting some additional reps in with her non-Olympic bound horses.

Doug brought his string of jumpers out to Split Rock, so’s he’s gotten lots of reps in too, of course. Vandiver made the trip as well and in addition to getting in some practice (and a win!) in the 1.30m classes enjoyed being back in the bluegrass at the Kentucky Horse Park and keeping his conditioning up with super groom Courtney Carson in the irons while he was at it:

The Queen of Soul accompanied Tokyo bound Quinn on his gallop sets this morning.

OTTB Wishlist: Bold, Beautiful Bays

We all know there’s a stereotypical assumption about chestnut mares (for the record, I don’t buy into it!) but what about bay mares? I’ve never heard any axiom around them, so let’s make one up right now! When I think about a bay mare, I picture a horse who is beautiful and bold with a kind eye. Here are three off the-track Thoroughbred mares who fit right that description to a too.

Elite Appeal (UNCAPTURED – ALOTOFAPPEAL, BY TRIPPI): 2016 16.0-hand Florida-bred mare

This girl could appeal to a lot of different buyers as she seems to have the temperament for just about any discipline. Though green, the folks atMidAtlantic Horse Rescue (MAHR) call her easy to ride and describe her as a lovely mover. The icing on the cake? She goes barefoot! One of the great things about adopting  horse from MAHR, if you’re unfamiliar with them, is that all their adopted horses receive $200 toward lessons and training thanks to the ASPCA On the Right Track Voucher program.

Located in Warwick, Maryland.

Boston Girl (WICKED STRONG – JUST SAY HEY, BY ROCKPORT HARBOR): 2017 15.3-hand New York-bred mare

This lightly raced young filly could be a real catch for someone looking for an athletic and spirited mare who just couldn’t quite find her stride as a race horse. Though she didn’t win any races, she did seem to prefer the turf over the dirt, which never seems like a bad thing for an event prospect. Her trainer has enjoyed exercising “Emma” herself and says she’s good to ride and a nice mover.

Rewarded. Photo via Friends of Ferdinand.

Rewarded (CENTRAL BANKER – BEST REWARD, BY GRAND REWARD): 2017 16.0-hand New York

Rewarded is a spirited filly who can be a little bit of a handful at times, but she loves to work and is ready and willing to learn. She had a couple of decent finishes in her career as a racehorse, and last set foot on the track in November. Take her home, put the work in and, yes, this super cute mare could become a rewarding partner!

Monday Video: Mark Todd Reflects on Racing, Event Riding and Royal Ascot

While we miss seeing the great Sir Mark Todd out and about at events nowadays, the Kiwi event rider turned racehorse trainer is clearly enjoying his new line of work. This Friday, he’ll reach a milestone accomplishment in his new career as he saddles his first horse at Royal Ascot, one of Britain’s biggest flat racing meets.

BBC broadcaster Clare Balding recently sat down with Toddy to relive some of his eventing glory days, discuss his career transition, and of course chat about the horse of the hour, Tasman Bay, owned by Sir Peter Vela, who will be running in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes. Clare also finds out which piece of his former eventing equipment Mark has worn to the races before!

Weekend Winners: Aspen, Bucks County, Golden Spike, Seneca Valley PC, Queeny Park, River Glen, Valinor, Woodland Stallion Station

The rosette rat race continued this weekend over another beautiful couple of days across the country. This weekend’s calendar of events took place in seven out of the ten USEA Areas and literally spanned coast to coast.

Our Unofficial Low Score Award winner was Kris Greenway and Ash B’dash (I have to shout it out, I think that’s such a cute name!) who brought home the blue in the Training-Open A division from Utah’s Golden Spike H.T. on a score of 21.4. This pair aren’t strangers to success at this level — they are the reigning Training champions, having earned the title at last year’s Area IX Championships held at The Event at Skyline. Well done!

Here are all of this weekend’s big winners, but ribbon or not congratulations to everyone who go out there this weekend and went eventing — you’re all winners in our book!

All eyes are on Tokyo right now, true, but let’s look to the future for just a second. In all likelihood, 2032 will see the return of the Olympics to Australia for the first time since 2000 as it’s been reported that IOC Executive Board will propose the city of Brisbane as host for that year. The Brisbane Showgrounds, a popular venue for festivals and concerts, would be used for the in-arena equestrian events while the cross country portion of eventing would be held at Victoria Park. [Brisbane to be recommended for 2032]

And they’re off! Our American contingent, which now only consists of Ariel Grald with Leamore Master Plan and Jennie Brannigan with Stella Artois, is now en route to the Luhmühlen CCI5*. A few more Americans were originally entered, but COVID travel restrictions and quarantine requirements have made the trip quite tricky (you can read more about this in Tilly Berendt’s travel blogs, which are both educational and entertaining). We’re glad to see these ladies and their exceptional mounts have found a way to make the trip and we wish them the very best!

Phew! It was a really doozy of a weekend for eventing with nine recognized events taking place throughout the country, from Florida to Vermont to Wyoming and what feels like everywhere in between. We’d like to send a special shoutout the very patient competitors of the Area I Championships that took place at GMHA this weekend. These were the postponed 2020 championships — the 2021 Area I Championships will take place later this year in conjunction with GMHA’s September H.T.

Monday Video: Scorch the Ocala Cross Country with Elisa Wallace and Riot Gear

Seems like it was quite a hot weekend out there for pretty much everyone. I’m based up near Boston, Massachusetts and as we say around here it was a real scorcha’, so I can’t imagine what it was like down in Florida for the Ocala Summer I Horse Trials. All you riders and horses down there must be well acclimated to this kind of weather!

For today’s featured video, we’re treated to a spin around the Ocala Intermediate/Preliminary cross country course courtesy of Elisa Wallace and one of her rising stars, Riot Gear (who Elisa affectionately calls Rye Bread) a 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Steve Sukup and Vicki Larson Sukup. While the goal of the weekend was mainly to further build theirs partnership and have an educational ride — even forgoing her watch on cross country in order to focus on the gallop — Elisa and Riot Gear still handily won the division. Turns out she had the fastest round anyway!

It’s proving no easy feat to get to a five-star this year. Turniergesellschaft Luhmühlen CCI5* is coming up from June 17-20th and some combinations are already in transit. This is due to COVID regulations requiring any British-based folks headed to the event to quarantine in a European country prior to arriving at the competition. This has severely truncated the number of entrants, but some intrepid competitors are finding ways to make it work.

Among them, our own Tilly Berendt has hitched a ride with British competitors Mollie Summerland and Charly van ter Heiden who are looking to contest their second five-star. The rest of the EN team are very excited to have Tilly as our boots on the ground at Luhmühlen and we’re extra excited to read the upcoming blogs of her adventures getting there!

OTTB Wishlist: Back in the Tack

Just like a Thoroughbred coming off the track, sometimes a little downtime can be very beneficial! OTTB Wishlist has been on hiatus — just hanging out in the paddock on holiday, if you will — for the first quarter of the year, but now it’s time to leg back up and get back to work.

As usual, we’re spotlighting three off-the-track Thoroughbreds that are available for adoption at various aftercare organizations across the country with the hopes that someone out there in Eventing Nation will find their match. Meet this week’s featured horses:

Karma Reigns. Photo via CANTER Illinois.

Karma Reigns (ACCLAMATION – PASSIONATE, BY VRONSKY): 2015 16.0-hand California-bred mare

Everyone could use a little good karma and this kind come is the form of a pretty bay mare! After a race career consisting of 10 starts and zero podium placings, it’s time for Karma Reigns to move on to a new situation. She seems to be a sensible girl and has no noted vices or soundness issues.

Located in Collinsville, Illinois.

View Karma Reigns on CANTER Illinois.

Lonesome Pine. Photo via Second Stride.

Lonesome Pine (INCLUDE – JUST LIKE LUCY, BY MAJESTICPERFECTION): 2018 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding.

Tall and leggy reminiscent of his namesake, Lonesome Pine looks taller than his 15.3-hands. At just three years old, however, he could actually end up a little taller! Lonesome Pine has a nice floaty way of carrying himself, seen in this video. This youngster is unraced, but has a few published workouts, which makes him eligible for a future Thoroughbred Makeover. While Lonesome Pine has no known soundness issues, he did previously have a laser throat surgery. Don’t let that deter you from taking him on as your next sport horse prospect, as he’s probably breathing better now than he did when he was in race training!

Located in Prospect, Kentucky.

Son of Ga Ga. Photo via Secretariat Center.

Son of Ga Ga (ALGORITHMS – LADY DIVA GA GA, BY EXCHANGE RATE): 2017 16.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

You want a really tall horse? Here’s a really tall horse. Clocking in at almost seventeen hands, Son of Ga Ga is going to catch everybody’s eye wherever he goes. I’d call him tall, dark and handsome, but you know he’s going to grey out eventually! He’ll still be a looker though — especially with that adorable face and floaty trot. “Sonny” is lightly raced with 7 career starts, retired sound, and is ready for a new career.

Located in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Prices are continuing their tour of world eventing domination this weekend with NINE total horses contesting three divisions at the Millstreet International Horse Trials this weekend, and of course they’re leading those three divisions. After dressage, Jonelle leads the 3*-L with Faerie Magnifico while Tim is out front in the 4*-L and 4*-S with Falco and Ascona M, respectively. His score of 20.1 with Ascona M is a new career best dressage score. Cross country kicks off at 11:30 AM local time/ 6:30 AM Eastern and you should be able to catch some live stream action on the Millstreet Facebook page.

Monday Video: Millbrook Horse Trials is On the Horizon

Save the date! August 5-8 2021, The Millbrook Horse Trials returns after the cancellation of the 2020 Trials due to COVID-19. Relive the action of the cross country from 2019, and make sure you put the event on your calendar! We can't wait to see you there! #MHT2021Thank you Marion de Vogel for the video!

Posted by Millbrook Horse Trials on Wednesday, May 26, 2021

We’re so excited to hear that Millbrook Horse Trials, which runs out of Riga Meadow at Coole Park Farm in Millbrook, New York will be returning this year, August 5th through 8th!After holding out hope of running last year, they too fell victim to the myriad of event cancellations caused by  COVID-19.

This is an event that we always look forward to and try to get boots on ground at as it’s the often the first Advanced run back for many of the horses that ran Kentucky earlier in the year and their next step on the way to the big year-end events later in the season. This year’s event is sure to be a joyous reunion after last year’s cancellation and a celebration of the event’s 20th anniversary, but we’d be remiss not to mention the hole that will also be felt by the loss of long-time course designer Tremaine Copper

Mark your calendars for Thursday, August 5th through Sunday, August 8th and keep an eye out on their website and their Omnibus listing here as more details become available. Enjoy this video of 2019 footage from local videographer Marion de Vogel.

Here she is, the stadium at the Equestrian Park in Setagaya City, Tokyo! This arena, which sits in a rather metropolitan area alongside the Tokyo University fo Agriculture, will play host to the Olympic Equestrian events (with the exception of the cross country phase, of course). The stadium actually already has an Olympic legacy, as it was originally built for the 1940 Olympics, which were canceled because of World War II, and then were used for the 1964 Olympics. In 2019 the park was completely overhauled in preparation for 2020 2021 and in the future it will be used for events by the Japan Racing Association.

As excited as we are to finally be able to get these Olympics underway, our excitement is dotted by trepidation over the COVID situation in Japan. Just yesterday, it was announced that the country’s state of emergency would be extended until a month before the Olympics are scheduled to begin. We very much hope that the Games go well, but out thoughts are with the people of Japan also.

Monday Video: Don’t Be a Nag!

Raise your hand if your horse thinks you’re a nag! As the rider of a naturally lazy horse, I know for a fact that I’m guilty of letting my heel creep up and nag as I try to keep her forward. It’s a work in progress trying to install a “cruise control” into a lazy horse, but it’s an important part of instilling rideability and eventually self carriage.

For the most part, keeping yourself from nagging your horse takes a lot of thoughtful riding and correct training over time, but dressage rider Amelia Newcomb has a few tips, tricks, and reminders up her sleeve that may help you out.

Stopping for a mid-hunter pace snack. Photo by Shana Rantala.

From an equestrian perspective, this past week has looked a lot different for me than from this time last year. I’m sure many of you can say the same! After over a year with nothing much to work towards and nowhere to go, it felt so nice to recently be able to get out and about not once but twice. First, all that hacking we’ve been doing in the off season paid off as my pony and I easily completed a hunter pace and had a blast doing so. Then a couple days later we had our first lesson back with our trainer in over a year! Little by little, things are getting back to normal.

Monday Video: Elisa Wallace Wraps Up Jersey Fresh

The aim of many riders who competed in the inaugural Lexington CCI4*-S at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event was to then tackle the CCI4*-L at Jersey Fresh two weeks later. Of those riders taking on the Kentucky-Jersey quest was Elisa Wallace and Let it be Lee. Like others entered in the Lexington CCI4*-S, Elisa and Lee also battled the elements that day over a tough track (relive their helmet cam here), so Elisa’s goal for Jersey Fresh was to give Lee a confidence-building ride for his first four-star long.

From taking a dump down the centerline to beautiful half passes, and from feeding Built bars to everyone in the barn to getting multiple camera angles of them from friends and family on cross country, you can relive their weekend in Elisa’s latest vlog! I’d say they had a great weekend!

After essentially a whole spring season away from home, Tamie Smith has finally returned back to her home base in California. While Mai Baum got to fly home in style after his five-star debut at Kentucky,  Tamie still had a little work left to do at Jersey Fresh last weekend with two horses in the 3*-L and another two in the 4*-L. Once that was over, she made the 40+ hour trek back to the west coast. Now that’s a road trip!

Yesterday we learned of the passing of the celebrated show jumper Judgement ISF, Crown who was laid to rest at the age of 29 at Iron Spring Farm where he was bred. “Judgey” broke barriers for North American-bred jumpers and with Beezie Madden in the irons he represented the US on 10 Nation’s Cup teams, winning gold in 2007 and 2008, among many other accolades. When he retired back to Iron Spring Farm at the age of 18 he had garnered nearly $1.5 million in prize money. Our hearts go out to all who loved this incredible athlete. Monday Video: Let’s Talk About Canter Transitions

Upward canter transitions: they’re easy in theory since it’s all about timing, but as an inexperienced amateur rider or someone who is just getting started it’s actually kind of tricky to get that timing right.

I actually remember the first lesson where I was finally allowed to canter one of the infinitely patient school horses at the stable where I first started taking riding lessons. Either my instructor wasn’t particularly clear in explaining the the timing of the aids to me or I was blinded by my enthusiasm to actually be allowed to start cantering and I didn’t hear them, but I legitimately thought I was supposed to run the horse into the canter for a while. It was a real lightbulb moment for me when I finally did learn to time my aids correctly!

I sure wish I had this video from Amelia Newcomb Dressage back then, but unfortunately for me that was before YouTube was founded (which makes me feel very old!) Gone are those days, thankfully, where I repeatedly ran my horse into the canter, but we can all still use a refresher on the correct aids and their timing!

Need some hep with downward transitions too? Here’s another recent video from Amelia:
