Monday Video from CLM DWN: Through the Ears of a “Ginger Unicorn”

Andrew Hoy seems to be having the time of his life aboard Vassily de Lassos, or as Andrew has recently called him, his “ginger unicorn.” Over the weekend, the pair finished third overall in the CCI4*-S at Luhmühlen in Germany thanks to another completion on their dressage score. Fly around cross country with them courtesy of Andrew’s trusty hat cam!

As a 9-year-old, Vassily de Lassos was Andrews’s mount for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon representing Team Australia and finishing in fourth place individually — a very impressive finish for a young horse on the world stage. Andrew and Vassily de Lassos were one of four pairs to finish on their dressage score (FOD) at the WEG. Since the WEG, Vassily de Lassos, owned by Paula and David Evans, has now achieved an FOD in four out of his six starts at the four-star level. That consistency has seen the now 11-year-old Anglo Arab gelding finish no lower than 6th place at any of those events.

We know Andrew has his sights on Tokyo 2020, ahem, 2021 with this exciting horse and we look forward to going along for the ride!

My goodness, it looks like foliage is at peak up in Quebec. I was hoping to get up to Bromont for the first time this year, but alas, it was not to be since of course cross-border travel has become a bit complicated. I’ll have to wait another year to get a glimpse of this gorgeous view!

Monday Video from CLM DWN: Get to Know Astier Nicolas

France’s five-star, Pau, (which, heck, is the only CCI5*-L of 2020 now) is right around the corner so this seems like an opportune time to get to know one of the stars of the French eventing team, Astier Nicolas.

Astier is of course the reigning Olympic individual silver-medalist and a member of the reigning gold medal team from Rio 2016. The FEI caught up with Astier to ask how he got into riding, why he chose eventing, and more.

In addition to the seven other USEA-recognized events running this weekend, the young guns get their time to shine this weekend as the East Coast Future Event Horse Qualifiers and subsequent Championship takes place at Loch Moy Farm this weekend. The Central Championships were crowned on Thursday this past week and the West Coast Championship are coming up at Twin Rivers at the end of October. I don’t know why but seeing yearlings all dolled up strutting their stuff kind of reminds me of that show Toddlers and Tiaras. Remember that? I say we get event horse version going called Babies and Blue Ribbons — who’s on board?

Though today’s featured video lacks in length, it sure packs a real punch of ridiculousness into a short amount of time. The mornings are turning crisper and cooler as we approach fall and I’m sure the sight of frolicking horses in a field is familiar to many, but these turn out buddies are taking their excitement to a whole new level.

Turn your sound on and enjoy a laugh!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Autumn Colors

Has anyone else begun to notice just a hint of fall color peaking out from the tree tops? The cooler evenings and ever-so slightly fuzzier ponies are a sure sign that summer is signing off and autumn is on the way. Pretty soon we’ll be enjoying blazing fall foliage and sipping some hot PSL.

The dazzling bright orange of fall foliage is our theme as we round up our three OTTB picks of the week. Check out these chestnuts!

Great Gret. Photo via CANTER Illinois.

Great Gret (WELL POSITIONED – GRETA’S RAP, BY CHEROKEE RAP): 2016 15.3-hand Illinois-bred gelding

This gelding just has the sweetest face and looks like all he wants is his very own person to love on him. Great Gret raced 19 times in his career and earned $37,049. He’s built on a slender frame, but is nicely put together and has a particularly lovely strong shoulder. Great Gret connections say he is sweet, calm, and has a great brain. He sounds like he could potentially be a good choice for someone looking to restart their own OTTB while under the tutelage of a trainer.

Jardin De Giverny. Photo via Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue.

Jardin De Giverny (SUPERFLY – ASHLEY M., BY MR. GREELEY): 2016 16.0-hand Kentucky-bred mare

Jardin De Giverny is one of four OTTBs that Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue (MAHR) pulled from kill pen earlier this year. “Lily” was only lightly raced, having just 6 career starts, and last racing 11 months ago. Though she’s green as she’s being newly restarted under saddle and is re-entering work, this lovely liver chestnut is balanced, athletic and has shown herself to be a quick learner who tried hard for her rider. She is currently eligible for the 2021 RRP Thoroughbred Makeover and the folks at MAHR think she’d make a great Young Event Horse Prospect!

Lorri’s Candy. Photo via CANTER Pennsylvania.

Lorri’s Candy (SIDNEY’S CANDY – LOVING LORRI, BY TALE OF THE CAT): 2016 16.1-hand New York-bred gelding

This gelding just isn’t into the racing scene. Despite working well in the morning, his trainer can tell (and you can see by his race record of 8 starts and no top-three finishes) that his heart just isn’t in it during the real deal. Racing’s loss is the sport horse world’s gain though, as Lorry’s Candy has a desirable uphill build and some flashy chrome as icing on the cake. Just add some new muscling and Lorri’s Candy is going to be an absolute stunner.

Monday Video from CLM DWN: Ground Poles for Dayz

Have you been feeling a little stir crazy lately? Do you have a boatload of poles hanging around your arena? Have you also got the patience of a saint?

If yes to all of the previous questions, then perhaps you’d fancy setting up this giant crazy pole exercise courtesy of Australia’s Amanda Lewer and Amanda Ross. This exercise has so much going on that it may very well give you enough to work on until the pandemic is over. If you can’t set up the entire thing due to your arena size or a lack of poles, surely there are a few pieces you can isolate and utilize on their own.

Have at it, EN, and let us know how it goes!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Make 2020 Over

Photo courtesy of the Retired Racehorse Project.

You’ve got to give the fine folks at the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) some major props for embracing the misfortune at is the entirety of 2020 and making the best of it. Their biggest event of the year, the Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, was scheduled to be held this October but fell victim to the flurry of event cancellations asa result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet with an important mission still to accomplish — that of promoting finding second careers for ex-racehorses — the RRP has had, like many other organizations, to adapt and overcome the hurdles of 2020.

RRP has already announced that next year’s Thoroughbred Makeover will be double the fun and will include classes for both 2020 and 2021 eligible horses, the Makeover Marketplace will take place in a virtual format this year, they recently wrapped up an OTTB themed meme contest (check out the winners here for a laugh), and most recently they have announced their Make 2020 Over Virtual 5k which features the best race T-shirt that I’ve ever seen, frankly. You can receive the T-shirt by registering for the virtual race by October 7th. Not a runner, but still want the shirt? Heck, register anyway. It’s 2020 and we’re not going to judge! You’ll still be supporting the RRP’s mission after all.

You don’t have to wait until October to shop the Makeover Marketplace, though. Checkout these three eye-catching OTTBs who are currently listed:

Dazzling Deputy. Photo via RRP Makeover Marketplace.

Dazzling Deputy (GIANT GIZMO – CAM’S COUSIN, BY SILVER DEPUTY): 2013 16.1-hand Ontario-bred gelding

“Kind, attentive & brave gelding, which gives him the potential to excel in many directions. His training has focused on Dressage and Competitive Trail; however, he has also been started over fences and is schooling up to 2’. His level head would make him an excellent prospect as a Field Hunter or Eventer, and his eager-to-please temperament makes him suitable for a junior or adult amateur rider. He has both leads, but his right lead transition is currently a work in progress as he prefers to get into it through a flying change. We were planning on taking him to some historical reenactments this Fall, which is why you will notice a clip of us gun training him; he is literally bomb-proof! UTD on everything and microchipped. Big, strong feet. Has been approved to compete in RRP 2020 classes in Oct. 2021. Gets along well with other geldings. No vices.”

Located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Straightaway May. Photo via RRP Makeover Marketplace.

Straightaway May (HIGH COTTON – MAY RIVER, BY GULCH): 2014 16.1-hand Florida-bred gelding

“This sweet guy could easily step into any ring you ask him to. He will jump anything you put in front of him without hesitation, whether it’s in the hunter ring, jumper ring, or hacking out on the cross country course. He leads the way out on trails and enjoys a good snuggle. Incredibly brave, a quick learner, and always willing to please. Has local show miles, currently showing in 2’-2’6″ hunters, and has been schooled over starter height cross country jumps.”

Located in Archer, Florida.

Beat Yesterday. Photo via RRP Makeover Marketplace.

Beat Yesterday (MISSION IMPAZIBLE – RAH RAH, BY RAHY): 2015 15.3-hand New York-bred gelding

“Meet Beat Yesterday, who will be competing in the hunters/jumpers. But don’t let that fool you, this boy’s movements would get him noticed in the dressage ring as well. He hacks out alone, trail rides, goes bitless or in a rubber nathe. He has been started over jumps, participated in beginner walk/trot lessons, bathes and stands for the farrier. His sweet disposition would be an asset to any barn. He is our kids’ favorite snuggle bug and trail mount. Beats has gone in western and english tack although he is being trained predominantly hunter/jumper.”

Located in Bedford, Pennsylvannia.

Monday Video from CLM DWN: Go Eventing in Sweden

You may recognize Pontus Hugosson from such viral video such as this one where he rollerblades behind a mini horse while wearing his dressage tails. Pontus’s Instagram is full of similarly silly skits and he regularly vlogs on his YouTube channel as well. Pontus is also an upper-level event rider and in his most recent vlog he takes us to the Swedish National Championships in Segersjö. Before the competition get’s cracking, however, there’s time for some shenanigans at what looks to be a delightful little Swedish campsite with adorable cabins and a sauna. When in Scandinavia, I guess?

Pontus rode two horses in the CCI3*-S at the national championships: 8-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare, All Of Me (Camaro M X Lavita E Bella, by Cortez) who placed 17th, and Gilbert O.A., and nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Cardento 933 X Unea, by Marlon) who placed 20th.

Enjoy the peek into Swedish eventing!

Today would have been cross country day at Burghley Horse Trials, and while we unfortunately won’t get to watch a set of horses tackle a new 2020 Big Bad Burghley course it’s the perfect opportunity to take a look back and relive a bit of Burghley history. For starters, if you haven’t already, you need to read the story of how Allison Springer and Sinead Maynard turned the disappointment of not being selected for the 2012 London Olympics into the ride of their lives at Burghley a few weeks later, as it is superbly told by Sally Spickard.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Plenty to do During Derby Week

It’s Derby week! Gosh, that’s weird to say in September isn’t it? But hey, here we are in a really weird year so let’s just embrace the fact that Kentucky Derby has finally arrived. The race is just around the corner at this point, with NBC Sports televising the event including the Kentucky Oaks on Friday and beginning their Derby coverage at 2:30 PM ET Saturday. Post time for the Derby is 7:01 PM.

There is plenty to do leading up to the event to get you in the mood for this very different Derby. Horse Country, an organization that promotes equine-related attractions in Kentucky, has been live streaming farm visits all week on their Facebook page (and you can check out any you missed here) and remaining visits this week include tours of Claiborne Farm, WinStar Farm, and, one of our favorite organizations here, New Vocations Racehorse Adoption! If you’re local to the area, a few farms are offering in-person tours again, but the above live streams are a super way to explore some of these famous properties from the comfort of your own home.

Like the Belmont Stakes, which was run relatively on schedule in June and serves as the first leg of the Triple Crown this year, the Kentucky Derby will run without fans in the stands this weekend, and it was just announced that the Preakness Stakes in October will follow suit as well. But more than just the pandemic will be affecting the Run for the Roses this year, as the wrongful death of Breonna Taylor at the hands of Louisville police has brought Black Lives Matter protests and demands for police reform to the front door of Churchill Downs. While Breonna’s case is finally under investigation, there’s still much more to fight for to demand justice. By all means enjoy the farm tours and races this week, but take a moment to acknowledge your humanity and do what you can to fight against social injustices.

And now without further ado, our OTTB picks of the week. They may not have run for the roses, but they’ve got the potential to be your next best buddy and eventing partner:

Kissthebutterflies. Photo via Second Stride.

Kissthebutterflies (GET STORMY – MORIGAMI, BY ORCHARD PARK): 2014 16.1-hand Kentucky-bred mare

Kissthebutterflies is a recent arrival at Second Stride, so we don’t have much information on her, other than that she last raced in 2017 and “since retiring from racing, she has been shown in eventing.” A previous history of eventing isn’t something we come across on the websites of Thoroughbred-rehoming organizations often, but a quick Google search of her name show that this nice mare has indeed completed a few starter trials in Maryland previously. We’re not sure of her other history, but she looks sound from her videos and like a cute mover. Who knows, she could be a real steal of a deal!

Located in Prospect, Kentucky.

Orbiting the Moon. Photo via New Vocations Racehorse Adoption.

Orbiting the Moon (ORB – SWEETNSHARPPATTI, BY MORE THAN READY): 2016 15.1-hand Kentucky-bred mare

The staff at New Vocations call Orbiting the Moon, a.k.a. Molly, “a star in the making!” This four-year-old may stick a bit on the shorter side, coming in just under 15.2-hands high, but she’s well built and has no problem taking up the 5’11” rider’s leg who is in the irons in her videos. Molly seems to be the whole package: a sweet horse who’s easy to handle and happy to greet you in the barn, and a sporty mare who is a great balance of whoa and go under saddle. Molly retired from racing this summer with no known injuries after 18 starts and $37,455 earned.

Located in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

Cashmere Bliss. Photo via CANTER Minnesota.

Cashmere Bliss (NARRATIVE (IRE) – PETITE JETE, BY GRAND SLAM): 2015 15.2-hand Maryland-bred mare

How cute is this face?! Cashmere Bliss has been a good worker, earning $21,550 in 24 career races, but she’s all fitted up with no where to go next since her Trainer/Owner winters in Arizona and Turf Paradise’s meet, which normally runs from October through May, has been canceled. This mare is athletic, smart, and does best when she’s in work so her owner would love to find her a new home and career before she heads South. Cashmere Bliss is entered to race once more at Canterbury Park in Minnesota on Sept. 9, but needs to be bought and picked up by Sept. 10 when her owner heads out.

Located in Shakopee, Minnesota.

Monday Video from CLM DWN: Elisa Wallace Has a New Mustang to Make Over

There’s a new Mustang in town … err, or on the farm as it were. Our favorite five-star eventer/Mustang whisperer Elisa Wallace picked up her newest herd member recently and has begun the process of training him for the 2020 Georgia Mustang TIP Challenge which will take place from November 19 – 22 at Chattahoochee Hills.

Elisa’s newest acquisition is a three-year-old gelding out of Desatoya, Nevada whom she’s calling Escher (after favorite artist M.C. Escher) for this neat marking and his tipped ear. In Elisa’s latest vlog, she welcomes Escher off the trailer into his new home and we get a front row seat into her first interactions with the formerly feral horse. We’re looking forward to following along with Elisa and Escher’s journey and hope to see her out eventing with him at some point! You can follow along with their progress on Elisa’s YouTube Channel and for early access to videos you can support her by becoming a Patreon.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Back to Business for Finger Lakes Finest

It was a quiet couple of months for Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc., a non-profit organization that has been helping trainers rehome racehorses at the Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, New York since 2012. Like many, the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to their usual operations of taking prospective buyers to the track to see horses and visiting and photographing horses to list on their website and Facebook page.

We’re delighted to see that the good folks at Finger Lakes Finest are back in action in some capacity — volunteers are not currently allowed at the track, but they’re still helping trainers to place horses by receiving listings from them and sharing them on their very active Facebook page. See something you like? Scoop ’em up quick!

Yankee Noodledandy (HEAVY BREATHING – NICKERDOODLE, BY HAT TRICK (JPN)): 2016 15.3-hand New York-bred mare

Here’s a really cute filly with an extra cute nickname: “Moostash” is called such because of a little white marking on her upper lip that dots her otherwise nearly black coat. Moostash is sweet and sound, but was bred for the turf rather than dirt. Finger Lakes doesn’t run turf races, but this four-year-old isn’t showing enough speed anyway for her trainer to bother shipping her out to a different track to try it and figures she may as well find her a different career instead. Hmm, I can think of at least one other equestrian discipline that might fit the bill …

Wise Nobility (WISEMAN’S FERRY – SWEET NOBILITY, BY ABAGINONE): 2015 16.0-hand New York-bred mare

After two starts where she showed no talent for racing, Wise Nobility is looking for a second career away from the track. Her trainer reports that she’s on the higher energy side, but gallops in a snaffle. She can be slow to warm up to new people at first, so she’ll do best in a situation where she can have her own person. Many know that when you gain the trust of a good mare they will jump the moon for you and Wise Nobility seems like she could be that sort.

Toyshop (ALPHABET SOUP – HAUNTED HONEYMOON, BY EASTERN ECHO): 2013 16.1-hand New York-bred gelding

Grey lovers are sure to be swooning over this guy! Toyshop is a beautifully built an eye-catching seven-year-old who has made 16 career stars and hit the board a few times to earn $34,325 for his connections. “Ghost,” as he’s aptly nicknamed, is a lively and spirited ride as well as a beautiful mover according to his exercise rider. He’s a homebred of his owner too, so a good second home is a must for this well-loved guy!

Monday Video from CLM DWN: Boyd Martin #ForTheLoveOfEquestrian

The FEI’s second installment of their new #ForTheLoveOfEquestrian video series brings us some serious #MondayMotivation from a name we’re all familiar with: Boyd Martin. The Aussie-born American rider has become an eventing household name over the course of his career, which has seen its fair share of trials and tribulations from missteps in competition to a devastating barn fire.

“I think like any sportsperson you have a couple of highs and they’re followed by lots and lots of lows,” Boyd shares in the video. “You know, I think over the years I’ve just learned to roll with the punches a little bit. Just have the mentality that this is not going to define us. It’s just a bump in the road and you’ve got to keep soldiering on.”

Amen, Boyd.

Java Rocker (ROCKPORT HARBOR – BLACK JAVA, BY PINE BLUFF): 2010 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Java Rocker was pulled from a very bad situation last year by his current owner who would like to find him a home where he’ll never end up in that kind of situation again. After some time to hang out and recover, Java Rocker is looking good and is ready for whatever is next for him. Despite whatever he went through, he’s a sweet horse and level-headed. In the bit of work he’s done earlier this spring he also showed himself to be a quick learner and wants a job.

Located in Winona, Minesota.

Chiricahua (ALPHA – ALEXANDRA’S STORM, BY COLONEL JOHN): 2017 15.3-hand New York-bred gelding

We’re predicting that this handsome bay is going get scooped up fast, because she’s just the kind of horse everyone seems to be looking for in a new OTTB. Chiricahua is a lightly raced and sound three-year-old with a great uphill build. The perfect sport horse prospect! He sticks at 15.3 hands high currently, but he could certainly still reach that seemingly sought after 16-hand mark too. Don’t delay on this one!

Nan’s Plan (KANTHAROS – GIRL CODE, BY TEUFLESBERG): 2016 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred mare

This super cute mare came directly to the Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center (MMSC) from her racing connections who want her to find a home that will give her a great second career. “Nan” is another one who’s been very lightly raced at just three career starts. In the time she’s been at MMSC thus far, she’s proven herself to be a kind horse with a no-drama attitude. Don’t stereotype this one by her coat color!

Heidi White and Northern Spy at the first horse inspection, Bromont 2010. Photo via EN Archives.

The EN was saddened to learn yesterday of the passing of Northern Spy at the age of 27 years old. Known as around the barn as “Farley,” the English-bred Thoroughbred had a remarkable 18-year long eventing career which saw the completion of 97 USEA recognized events. He and owner/rider Heidi White together completed 21 FEI events including Kentucky, Burghley, Badminton, the 2005 FEI Eventing World Cup Finals in Sweden, and the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen. Heidi and Farley were selected to represent the U.S. at the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong, but an injury sustained during a training gallop unfortunately saw them withdraw before the start of competition.

Farley returned to the three-star level with Heidi in 2010 before running around the lower levels with a few different riders until 2016. Make sure to check out the video at the bottom of this post of him running around Millbrook in 2014 with a young rider! The EN team sends our deepest sympathies to Heidi and all who knew and loved Farley.

Monday Video from CLM DWN: An Ode to Arthur

In honor of Arthur, who recently passed away at the age of 21, let’s relive their last ride at the Kentucky Three-Day event. Have you ever heard a louder cheer at the end of a dressage test?

Diagnosed shortly before the competition with heart condition that would have made it dangerous for the then 18-year-old gelding to run and jump at length, Allison rode this test as an exhibition ride serving as his farewell to competition.

Rest in peace, Arthur.

Arthur Has Passed Away at Age 21

A memorable moment: The crowd went wild when Allison Springer and Arthur completed their test at Kentucky in 2016. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

We are deeply saddened to learn this morning of the passing of Arthur, the long-time equine partner of Allison Springer‘s, who captured the hearts of eventing fans throughout his 16-year career.

The 21-year-old Irish Sport Horse cross gelding was laid to rest after bout of laminitis, a crippling disease of the hoof whose etiology is not completely understood, but has been the Achilles heel, so to speak, of several great horses including Secretariat and 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.

Despite being notoriously spooky, a trait which would have perhaps put off other riders, Allison brought Arthur along from a “wild” five-year-old to a world-class athlete. The bond which saw them through over a decade of competition was a partnership in the truest sense of the word and Allison’s love for the tall liver chestnut was palpable to any who was fortunate enough to watch them.

Arthur and Allison first made heads turn with their 8th place finish at Jersey Fresh CCI4*-L  in 2007 and were subsequently named to the USEF Developing Rider List for the first of four times in their career. They completed the Kentucky Three-Day event for the first time in 2008 and would go on to compete in 9 more CCI5*-L events.

Some of their most notable finishes include second place in the Kentucky Three-Day Event in 2012, also earning the title of USEF National CCI5*-L Champion, and a sixth-place finish at Burghley Horse Trials later that year. The pair was also named as an Alternate for Team USA at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, and were shortlisted for the Olympics in 2012.  The pair completed 38 of 44 FEI Events they entered.

At 18-years-old, Arthur was diagnosed with a heart condition and was subsequently retired from eventing. The diagnosis came shortly before the Kentucky Three-Day event in 2017 in which he was entered. Instead of competing in the event as originally planned, Allison and Arthur performed their dressage test as an exhibition round which served as an emotional and memorable farewell to competition for the horse. In his retirement, Arthur happily enjoyed teaching some of Allison’s lucky students who rode him in lessons.

In a statement released this morning, Allison said, “Arthur was my best friend and putting what our partnership meant to me into words would be impossible. Over the past 16 years, Arthur taught me many things, and took me many places. He made some of my wildest dreams possible. He always kept me on my toes, and although he was not the easiest horse at times, he taught me what a true partnership should look like. In every one of our moments together, I was always honored to be Arthur’s rider, friend, and person. While I am devastated at losing him so suddenly, a piece of my heart will forever belong to him.”

Dr. Johns, Arthur’s long-time veterinarian, remarked, “The way Allison and Arthur loved one another is not something that you see every day and extended far beyond their partnership in the ring. It was a privilege to be part of Arthur’s support team for the past fifteen years. He is certainly a horse who made a big impact on many, including myself, and he will be deeply missed.”

Allison said she would like to extend her sincere gratitude to the members of The Arthur Syndicate LLC, and to her parents, for their long and unwavering support. She would also like to recognize his many grooms, vets, farriers and each and every person who made it possible for Arthur to have such a wonderful life and career. Lastly, Allison thanked Arthur’s many fans for always cheering him on. From the gallop lanes in Kentucky to the constant kind messages over the years, Arthur loved every moment of his time in the spotlight.

A few of our favorite photos of the pair from over the years:

The EN team sends our deepest condolences to Allison, her parents, and all of the connections that knew and loved Arthur.

Serum being prepared for antibody testing. Photo via the CDC Public Health Image Library.

I hope you’re ready for a Sunday science lesson with an equine twist! I know we’re all tired of coronavirus this and coronavirus that, but hear me out here because there’s a chance that horses could play a role in finding a treatment to this disease that’s disrupted our lives. Now I also know that research involving animals can be a touchy subject, but hear me out on this too as someone who works in field full-time and knows first hand what spectacular veterinary care the animals that are being used to find cures and treatments for the diseases that ail us (and ail animals too.) It’s all a lot different than PETA will have you believe, that’s for sure.

In this case, an Argentinian biotech company, Inmunova, is using horses to produce antibodies to COVID-19 and throughout the process the horses that are being used remain healthy and unharmed. First, the horses are injected with a SARS-COV-2 protein, which the horses do not get sick from, so that they naturally produce COVID-fighting antibodies. Then, blood is drawn from the horse, the antibodies are separated and extracted, and then the blood cells are returned to the horse. It’s similar to what happens when you make a plasma or platelet donation to the American Red Cross — they keep a portion of blood and then the rest, depending on what you’re donating, is returned back to your body.

The antibody-laden serum has shown promising results in fighting COVID-19 in petri dishes and the next step is clinical trials in Argentinian hospitals where the serum will be injected into patients who have tested positive from COVID-19. Ideally, the antibodies lent by our equine friends would knock back the coronavirus enough for the patient’s natural immune system to take over and kill it off.

Science is pretty cool, guys.

You might be a little confused about the news yesterday as British Eventing announced that they would no longer organize the SsangYong Blenheim Palace Horse Trials. The press release was a smidge confusing, I’ll give you that, but if you read to the end there’s no need to totally panic because they’re just looking for a new organizer. The 2020 event is canceled due to COVID, but the show will go on in 2021 under new management as long as a new organizer signs on. Our British correspondent Tilly Berendt will be along this morning with the deets!
