Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Smoochable Noses

What’s the first thing you do when you walk into the barn and see your horse with his or her head hanging over the stall door and nickering at you? I’d be willing to bet the that majority of us grab that squishy pony nose and plant a big ‘ol kiss right in the middle!

Need a new nose to smoosh and smooch? Here are three OTTBS looking for new homes and second careers, all with irresistibly kissable noses and potential as an event horse:

Soft Landing. Photo via CANTER Maryland.

Soft Landing (COURAGEOUS CAT – CARRIED AWAY, BY DIXIE UNION): 2015 16.0-hand New York-bred filly

Soft Landing is in need of exactly that. She’s perfectly sound and currently still at the track working and racing, but not quite competitive enough for her connections to keep her around. They’d like to find a new home for her in order to make room for some more lucrative horses in their barn. This filly has a nice athletic build and is going to look fabulous with some more weight and muscling!

Located at Laurel Park in Laurel, Maryland.

View Soft Landing on CANTER Maryland.

Beach Life. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Beach Life (MARSH SIDE – BLUE KIMONO, BY STORMY ATLANTIC): 2015 16.3-hand

Beach Life has been nicknamed “Marcia Marcia Marcia” by her connections, likely because this big beautiful redhead gets all the attention! Gorgeous as she is, she hasn’t shown any glimmer of being a good racehorse in her three starts, so it’s time for her find a new career she can be more successful in. With that nice shoulder and strong hindquarters, she certainly looks athletic enough to find success elsewhere. It also doesn’t hurt that she’s a sweetheart and sound!

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, New York.

Art Vandaley. Photo via CANTER Illinois.

Art Vandaley (DISTORTED HUMOR – FUNNY MOON, BY MALIBU MOON): 2014 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

We’ve featured this stately youngster before and can’t beleive he hasn’t been picked up yet, plus his price has recently been reduced! “Art” has a great racing pedigree and sold at Keeneland for $200,000 as a yearling, but hasn’t been able to live up to that price on the track. In 15 career starts, he made a respectable $25,000, but that’s not enough to keep him in training. Since he’s been out of training, you can see in his jog videos that he has a little pent-up energy and sass, however, he was sweet and happy in his stall. We can see this gelding loving cross country and Seinfeld fans will love hearing his name over the loudspeaker!

Located at Fairmount Park Race Track in Collinsville, Illinois.

Thursday Video from Nupafeed: Area V Coach Will Faudree Jumps for Joy

Team Nupafeed had a pretty impeccable weekend at Rebecca Farm! Not only did the names of their sponsored riders — Frankie Thieriot-Stutes, Tamie Smith, Hawley Bennett-Awad, and Bobby Meyerhoff to name a few — dot the top placings of CCI3* and CIC3*, but their sponsored Area V Young Riders team consisting of McKinsey Wickman with Dassett Profile, Georgia Dillard with Galileo Wp and Georgia Phillips with Menue Rendevous took home team gold in the CCIJ1* too!

Another key to the success of the Area V team was the support of their coach Will Faudree, who jumped every single fence right along with them. Take a look:

We are so proud of the area V crew. Will jumped every jump with them

GVRDC H.T. Debuts Modified in Area I and Wants to Give You Gas Money

Kelly Ransom riding Prince Cavanagh, winners of the 2017 Open Training A at GVRDC. Photo by Brant Gamma.

There’s something new coming to Area I this August. The Genesee Valley Riding and Driving Club (GVRDC) Horse Trials held August 17-19 in Geneseo, New York, will be the first and currently the only event in Area I to host the new Modified division, and they want to help get you there!

“We’re really taking a big step adding the Modified and want to get the word out as far and wide as we can,” said Carol Kozlowski, a member of the GVRDC H.T. organizing committee.

Introduced in 2017 as a stepping stone between the Training and Preliminary levels, the Modified level offers a bridge between what is thought to be one of the largest level-gaps in the sport. Riders in the Northeast looking to make the jump from Training level to Preliminary this fall can now consider GVRDC as a possible stop on their way when planning their fall competition calendar.

GVDRC will run the regular Beginner Novice through Preliminary divisions in addition to debuting Modified, but that’s not all — they will also be hosting NEH, FEH, and YEH classes on Saturday afternoon, a first for this venue and a testament to the growth of the Young Event Horse programs throughout the Areas. Horses competing in the YEH and NEH divisions are still eligible to compete in the horse trials as well.

Located in western New York hunt country bordering the beautiful Finger Lakes region, GVRDC is a unique location of Area I, given its proximity to parts of Areas II and VIII. It may be a bit of a drive for some, but its organizers are looking to make the trip worth the while to competitors by offering a wide range of divisions and rolling out a new program to entice those who may be facing a longer drive: the GVRDC Travel Incentive Program will award $100 to the competitor with the best score in each division — from the Young Horse divisions through Preliminary for a total of $600 — who has traveled a minimum of 200 miles one way to the competition.

GVDRC is ready to welcome competitors to enjoy galloping across the rolling hills and farmland of Ney York hunt country on their cross country course designed by Jeff Kibbie. Closing date for this event is next Tuesday, July 31st, so don’t delay in getting those entries in! View the omnibus listing here.

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Michael Jung vs. Aachen Jump & Drive

Screenshot via YouTube courtesy of ClipMyHorse.TV.

No, your eyes don’t deceive you: that’s Michael Jung, Ze Terminator himself, in a marathon cart.

We unfortunately missed Michael in the eventing competition at CHIO Aachen this year, but he came to play with fischerDaily Impressed in the show jumping speed classes and Chocolat in the Jump & Drive.

Jump & Drive contests aren’t big here in the U.S. (why not??), but they’re not-to-be-missed classes at big European events. Though we often see riders trade in their horses for motorized vehicles in these classes, Aachen’s Jump & Drive keeps the horsepower in true equine form by replacing the car with a combined driving team. Add in an event rider and show jumper and you have the ultimate relay race.

Ingrid Klimke’s team was first out and held the lead until the very end, when Michael Jung’s team stormed in to clinch the win as the final team to go. Click here to view final results. Watch the exciting round below!

CHIO Aachen is basically home turf for the one and only Ingrid Klimke, but that doesn’t mean she takes being there for granted. This year she’s especially busy, as she’s arrived with four horses in tow and is competing across three disciplines, including eventing with her stalwart partner SAP Hale Bob OLD in addition to fellow superstar Parmenides, who she’ll also compete in pure show jumping.

From the spending time with family, to the international competitors, to the shopping, to the technology that SAP brings to the competition — let Ingrid lead you on a little tour of the show grounds and tell you what makes Aachen so special.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist: Big Money for Cali OTTBs at RRP!

There’s another special award on the table for this year’s Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) Thoroughbred Makeover trainers – and this one is for all you West Coasters!

The Georgia B. Ridder Foundation is generously sponsoring a $2,500 award for the top-scoring California-bred at the 2018 competition on behalf of After the Finish Line. In honor of the California-breds competing this year, let’s take a look at three currently available for adoption through CANTER:

Alpine Blue. Photo via CANTER CA.

Alpine Blue (SWISS YODELER – BLUEGRASS GIRLS, BY BLUEGRASS CAT): 2015 16.0-hand California-bred colt

This good-looking guy is, yes, still intact, but if you don’t mind gelding him he’s definitely worth a look. With a great bone structure and some good sport horse-producing names in his pedigree, Alpine Blue has got some serious potential as an eventer. Oh, not to mention he used to casually jump out of his paddock as a two-year-old. He bowed a tendon before he ever got to race and therefore remains untested on the track but it’s now fully-healed and he’s ready for a job to do!

Located at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, California.

Remy Set Go. Photo via CANTER CA.

Remy Set Go (BLUEGRASS CAT – R LUCKY STRIKE, BY IN EXCESS (IRE)): 2016 16.0-hand California-bred filly

Who doesn’t love a shiny chestnut? This glowing young filly still has been in training for four months and just isn’t showing any promise on the track, so her connections feel it’s best to let her move on to another career. With a quiet disposition and kind eye, she looks like she wants someone to be her person. At just two years old, Remy is a bit sore from training but is otherwise sounds and could use some time off to grow before starting her next chapter.

Bella Ronski. Photo via CANTER CA.

Bella Ronski (VRONSKY – C. R. BALLERINA, BY MOSCOW BALLET): 2013 16.1-hand California-bred mare

There’s nothing plain about this bay – she’s truly eye-catching! With a nice uphill build and gorgeous neck and shoulder, you just can’t help but picture this mare neatly jumping fences and fancy-prancing her way into the ribbons. Bella has 34 career starts and just shy of $40k in earnings – a respectable career, but she’s just not fast enough to be very successful. She seems to know he has an elegant presence, as she stood perfectly for her CANTER photoshoot and she seemed to be gentle, sweet mare to the volunteers who saw her. Clean legs and sound – come get her!

Located in Tracy, California.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Dapple Bay Edition

Dapple grays get all the attention. Yeah, they’re eye catching and flashy, but you better buy stock in purple shampoo if you want any chance in keeping them clean.

Why not embrace the brown and have the best of both worlds with a lovely dapple bay? Okay, so you may have squint to see those dapples sometimes and they’ll likely be totally hidden under winter fluff for half the year, but it’s super rewarding to watch a well-fed and well-groomed bay blossom in the summertime.

This week we’ve tracked down three bay thoroughbreds with dapples peaking through who are ready and waiting for you to take them home!

Luvuryan. Photo via CANTER CA.

Luvuryan (ARTIE SCHILLER – PURE AND SIMPLE, BY TRIPPI): 2012 16.2-hand Florida-bred mare

This six-year-old has nice big feet and a lovely uphill build and way of going. She seems like a solid citizen who’ll make a great partner to someone. Luvuryan did have a ligament injury back in 2016, but received shockwave treatment and proper rehab for it. She returned to racing and has remained sound since, chocking up 37 total starts and over $60,000 in winnings.

Located at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, California.

View Luvuryan on CANTER CA.

Belvin. Photo via Second Stride.

Belvin (EMPIRE MAKER – MIDWAY SQUALL, BY STORM BIRD): 2010 16.0-hand Florida-bred gelding

The lovely dark bay coat that Belvin has is a stamp of many Empire Maker babies — could he also have the same potential as a sport horse that the offspring of the 2003 Belmont Stakes winner do as well? Belvin has been a Steady Eddie over his seven-year racing career, racking up 45 career starts and earning almost $200,000. He lost a shoe and popped an abscess shortly after arriving at Second Stride so he hasn’t been restarted under saddle yet, but at least that makes him still RRP eligible! With a race record like that it’s clear to see that Belvin has a good work ethic, plus the folks at Second Stride can already tell he’s a sensible, kind guy who wants to please.

Located at Moserwood Farm in Pleasureville, Kentucky.

That Warrior Girl. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

That Warrior Girl (A. P. WARRIOR – I DO THAT, BY WHEELAWAY): 2012 16.0-hand New York-bred mare

It’s a touch hard to tell from the tilted picture, but That Warrior Girl is a really nicely balanced mare. Her trainer raves about her attitude and how nice she is to work with, not to mention she’s good looking and has a nice sport horse pedigree! She does have an old splint in one leg, but is sound and has no vices. That Warrior Girl earned a respectable $45k in 27 starts and prior to coming to Finger Lakes, she was running the turf distance races at Belmont — that bodes well for a career as an eventer!

Located at the Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, New York.

Winning Ride: Will Coleman and Off The Record

It was a great day for Will Coleman Equestrian at the Brook Ledge Great Meadow International presented by Adequan® CICO3*, finishing the day with 2 horses in the top 5! Here is his double clear cross-country effort aboard Off The Record that gave him the win! #USAEventing

Posted by USEF Network on Sunday, July 8, 2018

Will Coleman gave us a master class across the country yesterday at the Brook Ledge Great Meadow International, presented by Adequan, in The Plains, Virginia. Mike Etherington-Smith’s cross country course touted a track which gave seasoned horses plenty to do, yet was forgiving and confidence-building enough for the younger horses. Time was a huge factor on cross country day, with just five out of forty pairs coming un under time.

Will Coleman and Off The Record was one of those pairs and their double clear ride gave them the win by just 0.1 penalty points over Britain’s Georgie Spence and Halltown Harley. To make it even more impressive, this was only Off The Record’s second ever three-star and third ever Advanced. Watch and learn from Will’s masterful ride!

Jumping racehorses

Why do we jump racehorses? 🏇🇦🇺

Posted by Godolphin on Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Cross training is a wonderful tool for human and equine athletes alike. It’s obviously built into our sport of eventing, which is part of what makes the sport so dang hard, but it’s also what creates such well-rounded athletes.

Global thoroughbred breeding and horse racing team, Godolphin, uses jumping as a cross training tool for some of their thoroughbred racehorses as a way to keep them happy and interested in their work. Wouldn’t you love to get your hands on one of these horses off the track?

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Area I Announces NAYC Selection

Katie Lichten and Sapphire Blue B. Photo by Jenni Autry.

Following the final selection trial at Groton House Farm H.T., Area I has announced the riders, horses and grooms that they will be sending to compete at the 2018 FEI North American Youth Championships (NAYC) Three-Day Event.

“This team in particular is a really cool group. There’s a wonderful dynamic and cooperative nature among them,” says Brenda Jarrell, Young Rider Coordinator for Area I.

Area I’s one-star team took home the top podium placing in 2016 under the tutelage of longtime coach Mikki Kuchta. In 2017, Buck Davidson took over coaching duties and the combined Area I/IV two-star team brought home gold. They’d love to return to the podium this year as well, and while they remain competitive, the primary focus has been on creating team camaraderie and community service.

“The whole goal for Area I is to focus on the team. NAYC is a wonderful opportunity to get an idea of what it means to compete on the team and this group has really embraced that. They all bonded during our Acts of Kindness fundraiser, volunteering, and our stall cleaning fundraiser,” Brenda says. “They are a wonderfully hardworking and very integrated group. It’s one of those teams where you get the feeling they make each other better and bring the best out of each other.”

Area I will be sending a total of six riders and seven horses out to Rebecca Farm in Kallispell, Montana July 18-22. Buck Davidson is returning for a second year to coach the Area I team. He is joined by Head Groom and Chef D’Equipe Kathleen Murray. Six Young Rider grooms —Penelope Giesen, Tove Goldstone, Gillian Maynard, Libby Scruton, Emma Stiller, and Allie Webster  have been selected to join the team in Montana and will be instrumental to the success of the horses and riders.

Area I CICOY2* Team

Katie Lichten and RF Luminati. Photo by Joan Davis/Flatlandsfoto.

Katie Lichten, 19, and RF Luminati, a 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding, stepped up to the two-star level this winter at Pine Top and followed it up with a completion of the CIC2* at Jersey Fresh this spring. They most recently won the Intermediate/Preliminary division at Groton House Farm this past weekend. This will be the pair’s third trip to NAYC, having previously competed on the one-star team in 2015 and again 2016 as a part of the gold medal-winning team.

“I am beyond excited to be ale to compete at Young Riders again this year,” says Katie. ” I can honestly say that my past two experiences at Young Riders were the two best weeks of my life. Being a part of an amazing team of dedicated riders, grooms, coaches, parents and supporters was incredibly fun and rewarding. We have another outstanding team this year that I am honored to be a part of.”

Katie will also be riding Sapphire Blue B in the two-star. The eight-year-old Irish Sport Horse was campaigned to the two-star level in Europe by Ellen Svennerstal before being imported by the Lichtens last year. The pair won the CIC1* at Pine Top early this spring followed by strong finishes in the CIC1* at Carolina International in March, Intermediate at Fair Hill in April, and the CIC2* at Jersey Fresh International.

Maddie Lichten and Yarrow. Photo by Joan Davis/Flatlandsfoto.

No, you’re not seeing double — Area I has twin two-star riders! Maddie Lichten and her horse Yarrow will be representing Area I in the two-star alongside her sister. Maddie was also a part of the gold medal-winning one-star team two years ago and is now returning for her second Young Riders appearance. Maddie and Yarrow, an 11-year-old Canadian Sport Horse bred by Kelly Plitz and previously developed to the CIC2* level by Waylon Roberts, took home a win in the Open Intermediate division at Chattahoochee Hills H.T. before a successful move-up to two-star at the Virginia CCI/CIC & H.T. this May.

Katie and Maddie originally hail from Hamilton, Massachusetts and have both most recently been training with Allison Springer. They will be heading to Davidson College in North Carolina together in the fall.

Area I CH-J* Team

Sami Crandell and Fernhill Chaos. Photo by Joan Davis/Flatlandsfoto.

Fifteen-year-old Sami Crandell will be making her NAYC debut riding Fernhill Chaos, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding. Coach Buck Davidson is already a familiar face to Sami, who trains with him routinely. Sami made her Preliminary debut last summer on another horse, Sweet Baby Kaz, before taking over the ride on Fernhill Chaos later that year. The pair finished fourth in a very competitive CCI1* at the Ocala International 3-Day Festival of Eventing this April.

“It is an honor to represent Area 1,” said Sami. “I am beyond excited to be competing alongside such talented team members. I look forward to competing at Rebecca Farm and hopefully having our hard work pay off!”

India Doyle and Little Oliver. Photo by Joan Davis/Flatlandsfoto.

India Doyle, 17, of Beverly, MA stepped up to the Preliminary level at the GMHA Festival of Eventing August Horse Trials last year and hasn’t looked back. She earned her one-star qualification at the Ocala Jockey Club 3-Day International Event adding only one rail her dressage score in highly competitive the CC1*. Her own Little Oliver is a 16-year-old OTTB who was previously developed to the CIC3* level by Babette Lenna. India trains with Ferial Johnson out of Oakwood Equine/Ledyard Farm.

Will Jarrell and Grey Area. Photo by Joan Davis/Flatlandsfoto.

Will Jarrell, 17, and his 12-year old Irish Sport Horse gelding, Grey Area, will be representing Area I on the one-star team for the second time together, having also been named to the 2016 team. Grey Area will actually be making his third NAYC appearance, having taken Margaret Schaeffer to a sixth place finish in the CH-J* in 2014 before then being developed to the two-star level by Sinead Halpin.

Will trains with Suzi Gornall out of either Uxbridge, MA or Aiken, SC, depending on the time of year, and he made his Intermediate level debut this spring at the Ocala International 3-Day Festival of Eventing, finishing second in the Intermediate Rider division. He’s heading into his senior year of high school at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, MA this fall and will be starting the college application process.

“It’s really an honor to be able to have the whole experience a second time, and I’m just thankful for all the people that have helped me get there!” said Will. “I’m looking forward to being in Montana again, and I’m very excited to be with a team again because to me that’s one of the best parts about the whole experience!”

Kanyon Walker and Kenneth Street. Photo by Joan Davis/Flatlandsfoto.

Rounding out the CH-J* team is Kanyon Walker, also 17, who resides in Leesburg, FL and trains with Jennifer Holling. Kanyon is a multi-talented athlete — in addition to riding, he also plays football and is hoping to securing a college scholarship. Kanyon and his horse Kenneth Street have climbed the levels together the pair made their one-star debut this spring at the Ocala International 3-Day Festival of Eventing.

Many thanks to Area I’s super photographer Joan Davis of Flatlandsfoto for the wonderful pictures!

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m totally biased because I’m from the area, but in my eyes there’s no place more scenic and idyllic for an eventer than Groton House Farm in Hamilton, Massachusetts. This event may be 41 years old, but the team at GHF keeps the course designed by Janine Preece McClain fresh by adding new fences every year. For example, fence 8 on the Training course was a brand new A-B obstacle which was exciting for the spectators and patrons to watch and fun for competitors to ride.

Let Lakiesha Varney and her 11-year-old Warmblood mare, Kolor Me Gone, take you for a foot-perfect spin around the course and show you how it’s done. The pair’s double clear cross country ride moved them up the ranks from 7th after dressage to ultimately take home a yellow ribbon out of 16 competitors in the Senior Open Training A division.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Three ‘Fun Size’ Thoroughbreds

When I was a kid, I never really understood “Fun Size” candy bars. How could a smaller portion of sugary goodness such as Reeses or Snickers possibly trump the extra large King Size? Surely more must be better? King size is fun size, I used to say.

As an adult, I’ve come to understand that sometimes things are better in moderation (though to be completely honest, I’m still not convinced candy bars are one of them), but some folks just prefer slightly smaller horses. They can be easier to connect to and package, they’re super handy around turns, and when you do fall off you’re already a little closer to the ground!

This week we’ve found three nice-looking Thoroughbreds under 16.0-hands who are looking to show you what they can do in a second career:

Having Fun (ARCH – WEEKEND PARTY, BY A.P. INDY): 2014 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred mare

Is this not the most perfect name to hear announced over the loudspeaker while you’re on course? Let “Having Fun” remind you that  riding is just that — a way to have fun! This young mare had a modest race career with 15 starts and $21,770 in earnings, but she’d really rather just cuddle with her groom than run fast. Having Fun has a total ‘in-your-pocket’ personality and is as sweet as they come. She may very well make a nice sport horse for her next owner/rider, particularly if she forms a strong bond with them!

Baby Bling. Photo via CANTER Ohio.

Baby Bling (TOO MUCH BLING – MINI MOM, BY PARENTS’ REWARD): 2013 15.1-hand Ohio-bred gelding

He may be small, but Baby Bling has the potential to be pretty fancy. His sire line traces back to Fappiano (Courageous Comet’s grandsire) by way of Rubiano — a line known for producing well-balanced and athletic horses. Baby Bling is compact and easy to handle; he has a sweet disposition and is very affectionate. He retired sound after 32 starts and has since enjoyed some downtime on a farm away from the track. He’s still green, but given how well-mannered Baby Bling is he could be suitable for an amateur or young rider working with a trainer.

La Candelita (MISREMEMBERED – VERONICA’S LAKE, BY SALT LAKE): 2013 15.2-hand Kentucky-bred mare

With her smaller stature and refined build, La Candelita may be as close to finding a “Thoroughbred pony” as you’re going to come! Right now at Arlington she’s racing-lean, but her connections say that at different tracks with a different racing surface she muscles up very nicely. She may be a chestnut mare, but she was friendly and respectful of her handler for her CANTER photoshoot. La Candelita had ankle surgery as a two-year-old which was fully rehabbed and never caused any complications during her 30 start career. She’s now retiring sound and without any vices, looking for her next career.

Located at Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Beginning this Saturday and throughout the month of July, eventers will be showing their support for Jonty Evans by wearing his signature green when out on course. Jonty remains unconscious and in intensive care following his fall from Cooley Rorkes Drift at Tattersalls International Horse Trials on June 3. Let’s all#WearGreenForJonty and send some good EN juju his way!

Throwback Thursday Video from Nupafeed: 1995 Groton House Farm

Many things have changed over the past 23 years, but one thing that has remained consistent — since 1978, in fact — is eventing in June at Groton House Farm in Hamilton, Massachusetts.

No doubt there have still been changes over the 40 year history of the GHF Horse Trials: The event began by running Novice through Preliminary levels over one weekend, to eventually including Intermediate and Advanced levels in the mid-’80s and hosting upwards of 600 competitors over two weekends, before returning to holding just one weekend of competition for Novice though Intermediate/Preliminary competitors in 2009. Over all the years of competition, the lovely organizers of the GHF Horse Trials have welcomed spectators and competitors for the traditional three-days of exciting competition.

Take a trip back to the ’90s glory-days of eventing, big helmet cover bows and all, with this throwback video from RNS Videomedia (which at the time was known as Captain Edgar’s Videoworks!) And yes, that’s one more thing that hasn’t changed over 23 years — RNS will be filming there again this weekend!

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Brave Husband Tim Price Critiques Jonelle’s Dressage

Super brave Tim Price critiques wife Jonelle's ERM Leg 3 Dressage Test…

The incredibly brave Tim Price joins Hannah White – Adventurer to deliver his "constructive criticism" of wife Jonelle Price Event Rider's ERM Leg 3 test from Eventing Arville today. Is he mad or very very brave? Are the Price's still married? Will Tim have a very quiet long ride home in the lorry? We'll let you decide – we're not sure we can watch! 🙈BBCSport

Posted by Event Rider Masters on Saturday, June 23, 2018

There are many different kinds of brave. Galloping at and jumping over solid obstacles is one; critiquing your wife right in front of her is another. Tim Price, apparently, is both kinds of brave and particularly so considering his wife, Jonelle Price, is coming off back-to-back four-star wins.

These married Kiwi event riders are proof that couples who compete together, can still stay together — though Tim may have a long, quiet ride home after this. Watch (and cringe a little) as Tim critiques his wife’s CIC3* dressage test from this weekend’s Event Rider Masters at Arville in Belgium.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: New York, New York!

More good news for trainers competing in the 2018 Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover later this fall, especially for those training New York-breds! The New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, New York Racing Association, and New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. are jointly sponsoring the $5,000 Empire State Success Story Award, which will go to the top-placed New York-bred at the Makeover.

With New York-breds in mind, let’s take a look at three currently looking for new homes and second careers:

In Harm’s Way (HOOK AND LADDER – NEW HARMONY, BY A.P. INDY): 2010 16.2-hand New York-bred gelding

This horse’s story is a great example of the connections doing right by their horse. “Harmie” earned over $190,000 for his connections in his 27 career starts, before retiring soundly and being adopted out to a new home. Some time later, however, Harmie’s former race connections got wind that his owners were planning to have him put down due to foot soreness so they offered to take him back. He returned to them with terribly short feet and 200 lbs. underweight.

After some TLC — some shoes, letting his feet grow out, and proper nutrition – Harmie is back in top shape and his connections are enjoying riding around the farm, but he’s ready once again for a shot at second career; they’re looking to give him the chance to excel at being the riding horse they know he can be. He has a charming demeanor and those that know him describe him as an “in your pocket” type, plus he has great sporthorse bloodlines.

Cent of a Giant. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds.

Cent of Giant (FROST GIANT – CENTRINA, BY WHEELAWAY): 2015 15.2-hand New York-bred gelding

After just three starts, this three-year-old has made it clear that he’d prefer a career other than racing. Though he doesn’t want to race, he does have good bloodlines for jumping and his trainer says he likes to gallop and has no pull, buck, or spook. For a three-year-old, he’s a chill and easy to handle guy. Cent of a Giant has a balanced build overall and though he’s a little bum-high right now he’s still growing and estimated to reach 16.0-hands or taller. He’s RRP eligible, if you’re still looking, and sound with no vices — someone scoop him up!

Titus Catienus (CATIENUS – MIZLALA, BY UNBRIDLED’S SONG): 2008 16.1-hand New York-bred gelding

Titus arrived at the Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center after enjoying five years of pasture turnout while rehabbing from a soft tissue injury. The old injury is now well-healed and folks at MMSC have put him into their training program where he’s happy to have a job again and eager to please his new humans. This handsome guy has already stolen the hearts of the staff through his friendliness and keenness to learn. Titus already goes in a light frame on the flat, has been introduced to pole work and small jumps, and enjoys going out on the trails. He also looks great in Western tack if you’re into that!
