Unfortunately, due to the continued rain today and rain forecast for overnight and tomorrow, the Surefire Horse Trials has been cancelled for the weekend. We will send out information to the competitors later tonight.

Posted by Surefire Horse Trials on Friday, June 22, 2018

Ugh – I thought that with the spring behind us, rained-out events would be a thing of the past! Sadly, due to the rain yesterday and the continuing rain in the forecast over the weekend, the Surefire Horse Trials have been cancelled. The Young Event Horse competition for four and five-year-olds was held yesterday despite the soggy conditions, but the show cannot go on for the rest of the competition.

For everyone who was entered in the horse trials, the Surefire organizers are offering a free schooling day on Wednesday, July 4 from 8:00 AM -4:00 PM. There will be food on the grounds that day as well, so hopefully everyone can get out an enjoy the course then!

Thursday Video from Nupafeed: Don’t Break Your Vet

If you didn’t get your vet anything for National Veterinarian Appreciation Day (it was Monday!) here’s your chance to make it up to them. Perhaps what your vet would like more than any tangible gift (saving maybe a day off and a bottle of wine) is a barn full of horses with perfect ground manners.

Even simple procedures such as injections pose a high risk of injury to a vet when a horse is anxious or ill-behaved, so do your vet a favor and take the time to teach your horse to stand relaxed and quietly. This video from the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) shows how to do just that using clicker training.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: #ForTheHorse

Last week we highlighted #ForTheHorse, a social media campaign started by Carleigh Fedorka, who blogs at A Yankee In Paris. While some thoroughbreds do wind up in tough situations when their racing days are over, there are many owners and trainers out there who do right by their horses by letting them down when they come off the track and finding them good homes. #ForTheHorse aims to put those people — the good guys — in the spotlight.

More good guys in the industry include those who run and volunteer for thoroughbred aftercare organizations, facilitating the transition from racehorse to riding horse. CANTER USA is one such organization and this week we’re spotlighting three horses available through their network:

Cape Town Treasure. Photo via CANTER Delaware.

Cape Town Treasure (EUROSILVER – DERBYDAYGIRL, BY DEVIL HIS DUE): 2014 16.0-hand New Jersey-bred mare

This super-fancy filly is very lightly raced at only four starts. In those four starts she does have one win, but she’s just not fast enough to win again according to her owner/trainer. Cape Town Treasure is beautiful mover and has a lovely uphill build. This filly has lots of potential to be really flashy! She’s sounds and has clean legs and has also been recently scoped and is all clear. Her owner/trainer is also her breeder and would really like to see her go to a forever home where she’ll be treasured.

Located in Wilmington, Delaware.

Man U. Photo via CANTER MN.

Man U (SILVER HAZE – POMEROY GIRL, BY POMEROY): 2014 15.3-hand Oklahoma-bred gelding

This four-year-old is actually doing pretty decently as a racehorse. He has 6 in-the-money finishes over his 11 career starts and he just started racing last July. The problem is there just aren’t enough conditions at Canterbury Park for him. Man U is super sound and has a great future ahead of him in any sport. His owners could sell him as a racehorse, but would really like to see him move on and find success in a different career.

Located in Shakopee, Minnesota.

Starship Aquarius. Photo via CANTER KY.

Starship Aquarius (WITH DISTINCTION – CONECTIS (IRE), BY RIVER FALLS (GB)): 2012 15.3-hand Florida-bred mare

This near-black mare very nearly reached war horse status with her 47 career starts. After a good long race career, her owners this she’s ready to find a new home and a new career. She’s retired sound and has been enjoying some let down time since her last race in May. “Star” has a sweet personality, has no vices, and has a been-there-done-that kind of attitude. Her trainer thinks highly of her and says that with her mind she could easily transition into a new job.

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Ride Around Luhmühlen CCI4* with Liz Halliday-Sharp

At least for North Americans, it was either just too darn early to wake up or there were technical difficulties while trying to watch the live stream from Turniergesellschaft Luhmühlen. Thankfully, we can catch a ride around the CCI4* course courtesy of Liz Halliday-Sharp, who finished eighth with Deniro Z — an incredibly strong result in the horse’s four-star debut for America. The 10-year-old KWPN (Zapatero VDL X Zonne-Trend, by French Buffet xx) owned by the Deniro Syndicate and Ocala Horse Properties collected just 4.4 time penalties and looked to be having a blast around Mike Etherington-Smith’s cross country track, as evidenced by his pricked blue-bonneted ears!

One trip around the course not enough? German blogger Julis Eventer teamed up with competitor Jörg Kurbel to bring us another round of helmet cam footage. Jörg rode a stellar round clear of jumping penalties, coming home with 10.4 time, aboard the 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding Josera’s Entertain You (El Bundy X Fiama by For Pleasure) in the horse’s first four-star.

So springt er von Platz 38 nach Dressur auf Platz 14 nach Gelände! Ein tougher Kurs, den er mit seinem Pferd Josera’s Entertainment You gemeinsam gemeistert hat. Toll toll toll 🎉Vielen vielen Dank Jörg Kurbel & seinem Team!!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Just Like Justify

Everyone seems to be wild about Justify, our 13th Triple Crown winner, and rightly so! The athletic colt who only just started racing this February exudes class and confidence and we’re excited to see what he does next. We may be a little spoiled now though, having had two Triple Crown winners within the span of just a few years, so don’t be fooled into thinking they’re a dime a dozen! We may be hard-pressed to find another one just like Justify, but we can at least find a few with similar qualities, simplistic as they are.

In honor of Justify, this week we’ve picked out three chestnut geldings with chrome. They may not be Triple Crown winners, or even Stakes winners for that matter, but they could still be the next eventing champion you’re looking for:

Neutronstar. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Neutronstar (GALILEO (IRE) – BROWN EYES (GB), BY DANEHILL): 2012 17.0-hand Irish-bred gelding

This is one impressive-looking and uniquely-marked horse with the bloodlines to match his regal presence. Neutronstar was imported to the U.S. and has made 35 starts since 2015 with moderate success, but he’s not earning enough for his owner/trainer to keep him racing. His owner thinks this solidly built guy would be a good fit for eventing and we can certainly envision him in a start box one day! Though he’s a very friendly horse who was well-mannered for his FLF photoshoot, he’ll need an experienced owner to teach him the ropes of a second career due to his size.

View Neutronstar on Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Art Vandaley. Photo via CANTER Illinois.

Art Vandaley (DISTORTED HUMOR – FUNNY MOON, BY MALIBU MOON): 2014 15.3-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Here’s a stately youngster with a lovely structure who’s looking for his next job. “Art” has a great racing pedigree and sold at Keeneland for $200,000 as a yearling, but hasn’t been able to live up to that price on the track. In 15 career starts, he made a respectable $25,000, but that’s not enough to keep him in training. Since he’s been out of training, you can see in his jog videos that he has a little pent-up energy and sass, however, he was sweet and happy in his stall. We can see this gelding loving cross country and Seinfeld fans will love hearing his name over the loudspeaker!

View Art Vandaley on CANTER Illinois.

Brasstown Sheriff. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Brasstown Sheriff (POSSE – GLANCE AGAIN, BY REGAL CLASSIC): 2008 16.0-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

This 10-year-old is a true war horse, having amassed 89 starts and winning upwards of $75,000 over his seven-year career. Still placing in the money during last season, he’s a true competitor and has proven to be durable and sound. At the track, Brasstown Sheriff was a late-bloomer and was actually nicknamed “Peppy” as in “Pepe Le Pew” because his attitude towards racing was so sour at first. Peppy certainly warmed up to it though and got more competitive as he matured, but at this point, his connections would rather see him retire soundly and have a good chance at succeeding in a second career. If you’re looking for a solid been-there-done-that horse, then this on could be for you!

Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Secondhand Spectating the Belmont

I wonder who just won the Belmont Stakes?

Posted by Timothy Harfield on Saturday, June 9, 2018

What do you do when you’re on the road and can’t watch Justify’s bid for the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes? Calling your equally horse-crazy father, who’s watching it live, is one option and that’s exactly what Elisa Wallace did as she was driving home from a schooling show on Saturday. While I’m not sure that Rick Wallace has a future as a race announcer, he certainly has plenty of enthusiasm.

And what a race it was! Congratulations the thirteenth Triple Crown Winner, Justify, and all his connections. If you also missed watching it yourself, here’s your race reply:

Thursday Video from Nupafeed: Ride Along at The Spring Event at Archer!

Could the sky have been any more blue in Cheyenne, Wyoming, for The Spring Event at Archer this past weekend?

Last weekend marked the second ever horse trials held at the newly established Archer Equestrian Complex and, short of being there in person, we can’t think of a better way to get to know a new venue than by having a virtual gallop around. Enjoy the view from the saddle courtesy of Katie Frickel and her 17-year-old OTTB Epaulet. The pair finished on their dressage score to take home second place in the Training-A division. Well done, Katie, and thanks for taking us along for the ride!

Want to ride Archer yourself? Don’t miss their summer event which runs August 24th – 26th. It’s a great prep run for the AECs in Colorado the following weekend and the course will be open for schooling the week leading up to the Championships!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Triple Crown Ready

We went 37 years without a Triple Crown Winner before American Pharoah stormed onto the scene in 2015. Could we possibly have another winner now, just three years later, in another Bob Baffert-trained colt? Our contender, the handsome chestnut Justify, will make his bid this Saturday at Belmont Park.

Not that we really need another reason to root for him, but as icing on the cake, Justify’s connections have pledged to donate a portion of their winnings to the New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program.

Want to support thoroughbred aftercare yourself? Consider an OTTB when you’re in the market for your next eventing partner. Here are three currently available horses via New Vocations:

Longtime Friend. Photo via New Vocations Racehorse Adoption.

Longtime Friend (ARTIE SCHILLER – LONGWOOD LADY, BY IS IT TRUE): 2012 16.2-hand Indiana-bred mare

Longtime Friend could be just that for you! “Friend” is a sweet mare and the folks at New Vocations say she has a heart of gold. She’s extremely well-mannered on the ground and stands well for everything including vacuuming! Under saddle she can be a bit unsure and tense, but tried very hard to please. She last raced in June 2016 and had a bit of a rough time before coming to New Vocations, where she is now thriving. This mare is ready for someone with a kind, soft hand to be her best friend and bring her along.

Located in Medina, Ohio.

Homewood Field. Photo via New Vocations Racehorse Adoption.

Homewood Field (CANDY RIDE (ARG) – OVERLY TEMPTING, BY IN EXCESS (IRE)): 2013 16.0-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Despite some high-achieving bloodlines, Homewood Field isn’t as interested in racing as his relatives. He is, however, very happy being a riding horse and has taken to his new lifestyle very quickly. “Homewood” is very attentive and loves having one-on-one time with a person. He is coming along nicely with each and every ride and has shown to be responsive to aids and brave in new situations.

Located in Ballston Spa, New York.

Big Wave Dave. Photo via New Vocations Racehorse Adoption.

Bigwavedave (FASTNET ROCK (AUS) – CASH RUN, BY SEEKING THE GOLD): 2012 16.2-hand Irish bred mare

Poor Dave, she’s got a bit of a misleading name given that she’s actually a lady! Dave is an Irish-born lass who was imported to the United States before making any starts. She never showed the gumption to be a racehorse in her short career, but during training her exercise riders report that she was a forward-thinking, hard-worker. She has the makings of a brave and athletic mare who could really excel in a new career!

Located in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Road to AECs Runs Through the Event at Archer

Having run its very first event last August, the Event at Archer in Cheyenne, Wyoming, is a relatively new name within the USEA omnibus. But despite debuting a short time ago it’s already cemented its place on the Area IX calendar and proven its importance to the local eventing community.

Last year’s inaugural Event at Archer was a smashing success with over 160 competitors in Starter through Training divisions, outdrawing every other national event in the area.

Allison Murphy has been the driving force behind the creation of the Event at Archer after recognizing the need for a sanctioned event and cross country facilities to school in Southeastern Wyoming and Northern Colorado. Allison is backed by a fabulous committee which includes renowned course designer and builder James Atkinson of Revisionist Equestrian, who has brought his talents to the Archer course; Melinda Hofmeister, member at large; Tory Poulton, treasurer; and Allison’s husband Jon Murphy who brings his extensive business acumen as an advisor.

Archer’s banner event runs August 24th – 26th. Taking place just one week before the AECs are held at the Colorado Horse Park, it’s the perfect opportunity for a last-minute prep run before heading down to the Championships. In addition to the Starter level and the USEA recognized Beginner Novice through Preliminary horse trials, the summer event will also be offering combined tests for Training through Advanced levels.

New prelim jumps awaited staining over the winter before their debut this weekend. Photo courtesy of Allison Murphy.

The Archer Equestrian Complex is centrally located to many different events in the area and is just two hours away from the Colorado Horse Park. Not only does the summer event offer a final competitive experience before the AECs, but the cross country course will remain open throughout the following week and the Event at Archer Committee welcomes anyone who wishes to stay and school the course or take advantage of a variety of clinicians in preparation for the Championships. On-site camping spots and RV hookups at the Archer Equestrian Complex are readily available and extremely affordable, making it easy to utilize the schooling opportunities at their beautiful course which offers modern construction and questions for all levels.

Archer has added a second event for the 2018 calendar — the Spring Event at Archer — which runs this week, May 31st – June 3rd, and has a little over 180 competitors entered. With the cancellation of several events for the calendar year at the Colorado Horse Park, venues in Area IX have rallied to fill the calendar spots and provide needed outings for competitors in the area looking to qualify for the AECs.

“The goal of the spring event is to offer another qualifying show for the region as well as to continue to support and grow the sport we all love in Area IX,”  said Allison Murphy.

The spring event marks the inaugural Preliminary level competition for the venue. Additional fundraising and sponsorship is ongoing and will facilitate building future levels. The Event at Archer Committee has also applied for a 501(c)3 status which will allow for tax-deductible support from sponsors and donors.

The Event at Archer Committee and some of their key sponsors have delighted in offering competitor gifts and swag, a boatload of prizes, adult amateur awards, young rider awards, and seriously gorgeous ribbons. Anyone who ends up not completing the competition receives a coupon for free cross country schooling.

Plaques for sponsors, supporters, and memorial jumps ready to go. Photo courtesy of Allison Murphy.

“We want everybody to be successful. We want to extend goodwill and let people know that we’ve all been there,” Allison said. “Competitors don’t have to go home empty-handed. They can stay and school after the event or come back for schooling another time. We’re very happy to have them.”

Anyone headed to the AECs would be remiss to overlook the Event at Archer — an event run truly for the competitors — the success of which is a testament to the strong will of a group dedicated to seeing eventing thrive in their area.

Go Area IX and Go Eventing!

Sandro’s Star and Chris Talley win the Arena Eventing at Devon tonight! Bird’s eye view! Get into the shakey camera angles and back seat driving! ????

Posted by Quinnten Alston on Sunday, May 27, 2018

It was an exciting finale at the 2018 Devon Horse Show and Country Fair’s $50,000 Devon Arena Eventing, which took place under the lights on Sunday. Defending champion Sarah Kozumplik Murphy and Rubens D’ysieux were the penultimate pair in the jump off and they threw down a fast and clear round to hang onto the lead. Last to enter the ring were Chris Talley and the Oldenburg stallion Sandro’s Star, owned by Hannah Salazaar. Chris masterfully his mount around the Captain Mark Phillips course to shave less than a second off the leading time and steal the win. Click here for EN’s recap of the class.

You can get a clearer view of Chris’ stellar round with the USEF Network footage here, but what the above video lacks in pixels it makes up for in heart. Chris and Hannah’s good friend Quinnten Alston was ring-side and captured the energy of moment they clinched the win. Listen to the cheers as they turn for home and keep the rails up over the final oxer — that’s what this sport is all about!

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Three May Flowers

They say “April showers bring May flowers,” and there was so much rain in April that we better have a full-on Garden of Versailles by now, the end of May. I do love watching flowers grow and finally blossom throughout the spring time and I similarly love watching horses grow and blossom throughout their training.

OTTBs are certainly some of the most rewarding horses to see come into their own after they come of the track and begin a new career. Could one of these three horses blossom into your next eventer?

Ryan Code. Photo via CANTER Illinois.

Ryan Code (OMEGA CODE – ALL DAY, BY OPEN FORUM): 2014 16.0-hand Oklahoma-bred mare

Ryan Code as actually been training very well; however, she’s better suited to running longer distances and there just aren’t many races available suited towards her abilities. Her connections have therefore decided to let her move on and use her athletic abilities elsewhere. This cute mare loves attention, especially scratches, and seems to aim to please. With her strong shoulder, short coupling, and nice movement she looks like she could make a very handy mount!

Sunshineandwhiskey (DECARCHY – BELLASTREGA, BY DEPUTY MINISTER): 2014 15.3-hand Oregon-bred mare

No need to change this one’s name — Sunshineandwhiskey is sure to make you smile whenever you hear it over the loudspeaker at an event. This filly needs someone to build her confidence as she leaves the track and takes on a new career. Her trainer says right now she can be a little nervous as she comes out of the barn, but never misbehaves and tries to do right for her exercise rider. The CANTER volunteers who saw her agreed she’ll make a nice horse after getting some groceries.

“Selena,” as she is known around the barn, comes from a farm that uses the basics of dressage and jumping to help bring up their babies. She didn’t start racing until she was four years old and since then has garnered 15 career starts, but simply has no interest in the track. Her connections joked that she’s sound enough to run all day, but just not fast enough!

I’m not actually sure if Intercollegiate Eventing was around when I was in school, but I am definitely a little envious off all the students out there getting to combine their love of eventing and competition with their education. The camaraderie and teamwork that these students display is second-to-none and from the pictures and videos I’ve seen, it looks like everyone is having The Best Time!

One of the many super cool things about the Event Rider Masters (ERM) series is their partnership wth German software company SAP. SAP trackers placed in each rider’s pinney gather live data as competitors gallop across the country and merges it GPS to produce split-times and speed readout. Helmet cam video merged with the course data collected then brings the spectator a whole new ride-along experience!

Today we offer you the chance to ride along with Ingrid Klimke as she handily pilots her own SAP Hale Bob OLD around the Wiesbaden CIC3*. Ingrid hung on the lead over world number one, Oliver Townend, with a clear cross country round just 1.6 seconds over time to clinch her first ERM win.

Can you guess who the rider in the picture above is? Here’s a hint: she’s Tipperary’s 2018 Star Ambassador. Need another? She has a book written about her, from which the above picture was reprinted, authored by Julie Fitz-Gerald. For anyone who’s still stumped – it’s Jessica Phoenix! Anyone else have a little equitation envy for their past selves?

Horse's lungs

Thursday Video from Nupafeed: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Six Rules for Success

Arnold Schwarzenegger is many things: actor, filmmaker, former professional bodybuilder, politician, businessman, philanthropist…the list goes on. Equestrian is generally not included on his CV (though there is that great chase scene from True Lies) but when it comes to sports psychology and motivation we can still learn a thing or two from high achievers in other areas and apply them to our own discipline.

Since graduation season is currently upon us and competition season is in full swing, it’s a perfect time to throw it back to this commencement address delivered by the then-Governor for the University of Southern California in 2009. Listen to Mr. Schwarzenegger’s speech in the video above, which was edited over music and equestrian video by YouTuber Roxykavallina, for his six rules for success. You can also read the full transcript of the speech here.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Back to Business at Finger Lakes

Now that spring has finally made an appearance up north, the Finger Lakes Racetrack in Farmington, New York is back to live racing as of late last month. With the return of trainers and their horses for the summer season also comes the return of regular listings for horses looking for new careers via our friends at Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc. (FLF).

FLF recently posted three absolutely lovely thoroughbreds looking to move on to second careers all of which have interesting pedigrees and would make great eventing prospects! Take a look:

Punching Bag. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Punching Bag (TEUFLESBERG – FLOMAR, BY TWO PUNCH): 2015 17.0-hand New York-bred gelding

This is a big boy who’s still growing! Punching Bag is a sweetheart with a kind personality, but he is a sizable and energetic young horse who’ll need an experienced handler. After just five career starts and no win, place, or show finishes it’s pretty clear Punching Bag isn’t destined to be a racehorse despite his impressive blood lines. Punching bag is by the sire Teuflesberg who’s part of the same Johannesburg/ Hennessey line as current Triple Crown hopeful, Justify. Plus, he’s out of a mare by the ever-popular Two Punch who’s been noted for producing great sport horses so he’s sure to be an athletic one!

Harmon’s Giant. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Harmon’s Giant (FROST GIANT – ATTACHE, BY SEEKING THE GOLD): 2014 16.1-hand New York bred mare

This four-year-old was simply deemed too slow in her workouts and has thus remained unraced. While that’s too bad for her connections, we’ll consider it a good thing for whoever is lucky enough to bring home this nicely-built filly and turn her into a sporthorse. Despite not quite having the chops to make it on the track, her trainer says she has a good work ethic and really likes to gallop and go. Harmon’s Giant has great sire lines for jumping and eventing, with Giant’s Causeway and Private Account making appearances, so hopefully her desire to work can be put to use in a different discipline!

Courageous Dreamer. Photo via Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Courageous Dreamer (COURAGEOUS CAT – DREAMIN’ OF JEANNE, BY CALLER I. D.): 2015 16.1-hand New York-bred gelding

Courageous Dreamer is another horse without any top finishes in his handful of starts, but should see more success in a different career. While his nice movement and easy-going personality points to a possible future career as a show hunter, his athletic build and good balance could make him a promising eventer instead. Courageous Dreamer is a grandson of Storm Cat (who folks either tend to love or hate as a sporthorse sire) and additionally has Rahy, Blushing Groom, and Phone Trick as other prominent bloodlines in close up in his pedigree.
