Well, at the beginning of this week, everyone I know was celebrating an entire 7-day forecast without rain, which would be a real treat. Now, we’re all hunkering down for what may be a snowpocalypse, a wicked ice storm, or maybe if we’re lucky, nothing. Really, with Virginia weather, who knows. Basically, the best idea is to be prepared for all three within 24 hours. Welcome to January.

British Eventing is instituting rules for horses with repeated cross country eliminations in 2019. If a horse has two consecutive eliminations from either refusals, run-outs, horse or rider falls, or three eliminations in a rolling 12-month period, the horse and rider pair will be required to drop down a level at their next outing. If the eliminations prove consistent enough, BE will step in and speak with the rider about coaching opportunities that might boost their success in the future. [BE Cross Country Rules 2019]

This is how all my photoshoots end.

All of my animals must relent to one thing: photoshoots. Whether they like it or not, they are subjected to the camera on a regular basis, and my horses in particular have just accepted it as some weird ritual to participate in. They all learn to be pulled out of the barn onto a sunny spot of grass and left to stand *dead still PLEASE* and hopefully prick their ears. Nyls is the most professional of the bunch (obvi) and knows literally how to strike a pose when the camera comes out. However, if the shoot goes on too long, he will take to yawning. And yawning. And yawning. And he will not stop until he is returned to the barn. Well played, sir.

Looking for some winter jumping tips? We’ve got a video for you. Phillip Dutton uses the warm-up on the flat and over small fences to engage the horse’s hind end and establish the connection from leg to hand. “There’s a common thread between all of our phases, whether it’s dressage, show jumping, or cross-country, and that is the adjustability of your horse. To me, the biggest thing in doing well is getting your horse really connected from your leg to your hand. If you’re feeling spendy after the holidays, check out this luxury equine auction. Horses owned by Alejandro Andrade, ridden by his Olympic showjumper son Emanuel, will be sold by CWS Asset Management and Sales from February 19-26th. Of course, bidders must submit a $50,000 deposit before they are allowed to participate, but details, right? Mr. Andrade was sentenced to 10 years in prison for money laundering, so amongst other things there will be 14 world class horses sold, including horses that competed in the Olympics and the World Equestrian Games. Tis the season for….MUD PONIES

Look, I live in Virginia for a variety of reasons, but one of the main perks is that it’s usually dry and I don’t really have to deal with mud and muck for the majority of the year. 2018 really ruined that for me, as it literally wouldn’t stop raining. I realized that I am not well adapted to deal with this level of mud, and my OCD cleaning tendencies are literally just fried from a year of trying to keep my horses clean. Of course, I also own two total disgusting pig horses that aggressively roll as soon as you put them in the field, and both manage to get mud UNDER their blankets in the winter, and I’m on the verge of a mental breakdown. All I can say is that I hope 2019 involves 80% less rain on a weekly basis, and that I can return to my normal state of sanity.

If you were a badass viking in the 800’s, turns out you got to be buried with a bunch of righteous stallions. Scientists in Iceland have examined graves of over 350 vikings from this time, and over 150 of them are buried with horse bones. Not just any old horse bones, but every one of them except one was a male horse. So basically we’re just saying there was only one viking that preferred mares. [Vikings Love Stallions]

Chincoteague ponies are battling a disease known as “swamp cancer” this winter. A total of seven ponies have died or been euthanized as a result of pythiosis infection: the funguslike microorganism Pythium insidiosum causes tumor-like lesions, often on the lower legs as well as the abdomen, chest and face. The masses ulcerate and are terribly itchy, and include lumps of dead stony tissue called “kunkers.” The microorganism cannot penetrate healthy skin, but enters the body through small scrapes or cuts, as small as a fly bite, and lives in wetlands. Early detection is key for successful treatment and survival, but pythiosis can be often mistaken for other conditions early in its progression. [Chincoteague Ponies In Danger]

Well. It’s the last day of 2018. What can we say? It’s been a helluva year. We’ve had our ups and downs, our wins and our falls in the water jump, learned lots of new things, made new friends, soaked a lot of abscesses, shared gory human x-ray photos on social media, bought some ponies, sold some ponies, waded through mud, rocked our farmer’s tans, walked our courses 9,578 times, and drunk a lot of wine. That about sums it up, right? Ready for more of the same in 2019!!

Bonner Carpenter and Acapulco Jazz at Rolex Kentucky.

We’re terribly sorry to report the passing of Bonner Carpenter’s amazing four star Mexican Quarter Horse, Acapulco Jazz. He took Bonner around Kentucky in both 2008 and 2009, and was a fan favorite throughout his career.

From Bonner: “Yesterday I kissed his nose for the last time and said goodbye. My little Mexican jumping bean gave me more than i could have ever asked for and defied odds and surpassed every expectation. At 15.3 on a good day, my Mexican Quarter horse jumped an inexperienced 19 year old girl around Rolex Kentucky like it was nothing 2 years in a row. Jazz had a heart of gold and helped me fall in love with Eventing. He taught me everything I needed to know and tested me in every way to make me a better rider. There will never be another horse like him nor will another horse ever be able to replace him. Thank you for all the memories.”

Andrew Nicholson is to take up the mantle of specialist cross country coach for Switzerland in the lead up to the 2019 European Championships in Luhmühlen and hopefully help them secure a team berth for Tokyo 2020. Nine Swiss combinations are already qualified for the 2019 European Championships and their goal is to qualify a team for Tokyo with the help of the cross country master. Andrew, who has competed at six Olympic Games for New Zealand, will travel to Switzerland for several elite and junior squad training sessions and then accompany elite riders to selected events during the coming season. The Irish Draught horse is one of our favorites in eventing. Why is is that we love this breed so much? The Irish Draught horse originated in 18th century Ireland, when Irish farmers could only afford to keep a single horse on a small tract of land. They required an animal sturdy enough to pull a plough, athletic and bold enough to go foxhunting and jump anything, and sensible, but flashy enough to pull the family trap to church on Sunday. I’m so lucky that I live on a dirt road, because honestly this year I would have been so screwed without it. My hacking almost always involves crossing a river (or three) to access the best fields and trails, so that’s pretty much been out with all the rain and flooding this entire year, and now it’s just all mud anyway so not much fun for trot sets. Thankfully, all my horses are used to long and slow road work, and really it’s the best footing we have. I’m also lazy as hell this week and I ride one horse and pony the other one while my dog runs in front. Pretty sure my neighbors think I’m insane.

We’re very sad to report the passing of leading Eventing sire, Ramiro B. The twenty-four year old stallion was diagnosed with irreversible kidney failure, and was put to rest soon after. Having enjoyed a grand prix jumping career on his own, he has produced some of the top eventing and show jumping horses in the world, including several CCI4* and CSI5* winners. The Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau (TRPB), has announced the introduction of the digital tattoo system, scheduled for full implementation by Jan. 1, 2020. The transition to the TRPB Digital Tattoo follows the recent requirement by The Jockey Club for a horse to be microchipped prior to being registered and, more recently, the availability of a digital certificate of foal registration. This weekend, it snowed in Virginia. Like, a lot. Way more than anybody expected. And moreover, it’s Thursday and it hasn’t melted, which is just crazy because usually it is gone within a day or two. Today, I’m happy to report that I am en route to sunny Mexico, and leaving all this cold and snow and horrible weather behind for five days! I’m off to Tulum for my nephew’s wedding and a little bit of an amazing vacation with one of my oldest and best friends. So long, snow bunnies!

To say the least, the performance of the US Team left everyone a bit disappointed, but the mission from here is how to move forward and perform better at team competitions in the future. The Neue Schule Academy is offering a brand new bit and bridle fitting qualification course. “It is widely acknowledged that correctly fitting tack has a positive effect on horse performance, health and welfare,” said a spokesman for the Neue Schule Academy. “Yet, although the importance of a well-fitting saddle is understood and appreciated, the fit of bridles and bits has been largely overlooked.” [New Bit and Bridle Fitting Course Qualification]

You’re 100% welcome for this little gem of a throwback to me as a kid, posing in my backyard with one of my horses. This horse belonged to a family friend and came to retire to our farm, but still hacked out a bit. His name was Riemenschneider, or Remo for short, which was a name given to him by his highly intellectual owner. This horse let me climb up his legs and wrangle myself onto him bareback in the field, and then when I felt like he was walking too fast, I would pretend to fall off by leaning off the side, and he would halt. What a literal magical unicorn.

We are deeply saddened to report the sudden passing of Kyra King Stuart. A longtime supporter of the sport of Eventing, Kyra founded the Stuart Horse Trials in 1990 and served as organizer from that point until 2005. She was elected President of the USEA in 2005 and served for two years. During her time as president she worked hard to save the classic long format, grew the USEA American Eventing Championships and Adequan USEA Gold Cup Series, fostered the USEA Young Event Horse Series, and helped develop the USEA Future Event Horse Series. The FEI is working hard to ensure increased fairness in dressage judging for the future. In consideration of the increased cognitive demands on judges, studies were conducted on all the factors that can negatively influence perceptual cognitive consistency. Given that judging will always include human subjectivity, rules and regulations that improve judging capacity can always be improved upon, and these studies are integral to the future of dressage. It finally snowed for the first time in my neck of the woods yesterday, and it accumulated for a few hours before melting and turning weirdly sunny, which just about sums up Virginia weather, to be honest. I really don’t mind the actual snow part, because it’s usually warmer and easier to deal with than rain, but what I don’t like is afterwards when you’re left with a pile of mud. Let’s be real here: the worst part about winter isn’t the cold, it’s the MUD. I could live without it.

Well, it’s the last day of November, and I stepped up my game this year and got a tree yesterday, then got home and decorated it, while watching Elf. So, my holiday spirit is very much intact. Although sadly I found out that most of my Christmas lights had died in their box over the year, so I have to go get all new ones because I’m not a maniac and I’m not trying to find that one bulb that ruined the whole strand. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Jonty Evans continues his amazing recovery with the help of an animatronic horse. After suffering a fall this spring, Jonty was in a six week coma that left him with a head injury that caused doctors to wonder if he would ever walk again. But Jonty wants back on a horse! So he’s been practicing his skills and balance and position by using a horse simulator at Hartpury University. [Jonty’s Back in the Saddle]

While the Hagyard Midsouth Three-Day Event only happens once a year, it’s definitely a destination competition for many. As the oldest team eventing competition in the United States, this event was created in the early 1980s by the Midsouth Eventing and Dressage Association and The Eventing Association of Michigan, and has only grown in popularity through the years. Not only does it offer BN-P with the option to compete as a team with your friends, but also has both Preliminary and Training level old school long format three-days. Sports Medicine Associates of Chester County (SMACC) and Goodall Equine hosted an education evening to tackle that topic on Tuesday at the Mendenhall Inn in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Members of the local racing and sport horse communities came together to discuss equine health challenges ranging from airway issues and ulcers to soft tissue injuries and joint disease. Representatives of Boehringer Ingelheim and Midwest Veterinary Health were also on hand to discuss treatment options. A night of equine education and an open bar — what more could you ask for really? Teach us your ways, Ros Canter!! World Champion rider Ros recently gave a multi dimensional lecture demonstration that was totally sold out (no surprises there). She gave instruction on how to begin your training with young horses, and go back to basics with more advanced horses, as well as continuing on down the line with intermediate level horses, and then all the way to the top level. From four-years-old to four-stars, she showed how a consistency in training methodology is the key to her success. [Ros Canter Demonstration]

Area II ended their 2018 season at Full Moon Farm Horse Trials earlier this month, and capped the year by awarding two Charles Owen Technical Merit Awards. Judged by Stephen Bradley, Elizabeth Walker-Ebling riding Santana II and Nicholas D’Amore with Celtic Heritage took home top honors for their safe and effective cross country rounds. When I saw that photo, I thought maybe it had been photoshopped, and was made to look like Cards Against Humanity, realizing rightfully that CAH probably didn’t have an entire deck dedicated to our little community of lunatics. Then, after some googling, I found that Equestrians Against Normalcy is a thing, and they DO have an Extreme Eventer Deck of cards, and I immediately added it to my Christmas wish list/shopping cart. I don’t know if I’m late to the party on this little discovery, but it totally made my day.

The action is already well underway at the Ocala Jockey Club Three Day Event, and with the last FEI event of the season comes much excitement. They are offering an inaugural CCI3* level in addition to the CIC3*, with 13 and 12 entries respectively. Two horses who competed in the WEG this year are making their return, Felix Vogg’s Colero and Nilson Moreira da Silva on Magnum’s Martini, both in the CIC3*. British Olympic show jumper Tim Stockdale has passed away at the age of 54. Tim’s death comes after a short battle with cancer having been diagnosed early October. Tim competed for Great Britain at three senior championships and more than 50 Nations Cups; among the highlight of his long career, he was the highest placed British rider with Corlato at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Former USEF and FEI official Andrew Temkin has been permanently banned for violating SafeSport laws and has been found guilty of sexual misconduct with a minor. A former S-level eventing technical delegate and FEI two-star technical delegate, Andrew competed through the CCI3*level and served on the USEF SafeSport Ad Hoc Task Force earlier this year. Temkin will now be banned from coaching, competing, attending or officiating at any USEF-recognized events. Temkin is also suspended from the FEI, as all individuals suspended from the USEF are reciprocally. [SafeSport Bans Eventing Official]

This photo of Aubrey Davidson made me smile so so much, and just die a little inside with that ridiculously cute fluffy pony following her around the cross country course. This is absolutely the best way to be as a kid, and the best way to learn about horses and riding. I myself was basically let loose at a very young age with a variety of ponies, crawling around on them and falling off and climbing back on and hoping nobody noticed. Honestly not much has changed.

FEI president Ingmar de Ros has cast doubts on the future of the World Equestrian Games. The WEG is under inspection after it has been acknowledged that it is becoming harder and harder to find organizers who are capable and willing to host such a massive event, as well as how challenging it is for many countries to send riders every four years. Oh hey guys, I’m back after a ridiculously long time without my computer and without EN! My stupid display broke while I was at the Retired Racehorse Project, and somehow it took the Apple team in my town about a month to fix the darn thing, and cost me basically as much as buying a new computer, but I’m back. It was a stressful time, but somehow I made it. Also, look how cute my baby OTTB is! He is a perfect model animal, except when he is an absolute monster.

Sixty-four horses will be competing this weekend in the USEF CCI* Eventing National Championship divisions. Forty-two horses are in the CCI*, and twenty-two in the CCI* JR/YR Championship. This fall competition at the Virginia Horse Center also features divisions from Beginner Novice through CIC2*, and serves as the end of the year competition for many horses and riders on the east coast. The Loudoun Hunt Pony Club was founded in 1958 in conjunction with the Loudoun Hunt, and is one of the oldest pony clubs still operating today. Twice a year, they host a recognized event offering Beginner Novice through Intermediate levels. In the spring they run it out of Morven Park, and in the fall it is held at Oatlands Plantation right down the road. With the Breeder’s Cup Classic coming up tomorrow, we’re wondering where past runners are now. We found five thoroughbreds who ran in the Breeder’s Cup Classic, but overall didn’t find much success in that career path, and are now doing different things like Eventing, Dressage, and even the Hunters! Oh. My. God.

Ok, so my horse took off half his face in the trailer ride to Kentucky (cool, bro) BUT once he actually got to the park, I took him on two rides and he was totally relaxed and chilled out for both of them! We got to school in all the arenas, and hack around the outside of the cross country fence and even walk by some of the permanent 4* fences. Most importantly, we got to walk down the pathway into the Rolex Arena, and I could barely contain a smile from my face. He doesn’t even know how cool it is to be able to do that.

Osberton Horse Trials raised £7,120 toward Jonty Evans’ rehabilitation last weekend. Jonty was the guest of honor of Osberton’s third annual Equestrian of Sport fundraiser evening, where he was met with cheers and a standing ovation. “My long term goal is to ensure we have provision set up for when accidents such as Jonty’s occur,” said Stuart Buntine, Director of BEDE Events. “we operate in a dangerous sport and we must do all we can to support our athletes.” The event’s headlining CCI2* competition was won Izzy Taylor with Conguistador II; she also placed third on Liscarrow Conista. Several successful 2018 WEG equestrians are now up against a new contest. The USOC’s Team USA monthly awards feature a smattering of equestrians across three categories: Laura Graves and Rebecca Hart for Female Athlete of the Month, McLain Ward for Male Athlete of the Month, and the U.S. Show Jumping Team for Team of the Month. Best of the Blogs: Area III eventer and EN essayist Katherine McDonough’s horse Red has been out with an abscess for a couple weeks, but Katherine recently went and one-upped him by tearing a tendon in her ankle. Smack dab in the middle of event season, and with 96 days between surgery and a two week hiking trip in New Zealand that she’s been planning for ages. Katherine’s horse friends immediately stepped up to lend a hand, and she has now started a blog: “I’ve never done a blog before. I thought it might be a way for me to help myself along the way. Provide an outlet. Keep me accountable. To log the victories and defeats. A week from today I will be…officially competing at my first Thoroughbred Makeover in Kentucky!!  Guys, I’m really excited. Not only is it a thrill to be doing anything in the hallowed grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park, but it’s really fun to see hundreds of horses that were racing last year and are now competing in a wide variety of disciplines, and are coming from all over the country. Everyone wants to get to know new World Champion Ros Canter. Did you know that the 32-year-old is an avid field hockey player? She’s also only 5’2″ and 112 lbs, which is why she looks so tiny on 17.1 hand “Alby” as she’s galloping around cross country. Good thing he’s sensitive to his tiny jockey! When you get a mini horse as a companion, but then end up training it for an endurance sport horse lifestyle….wait a second, who does that??! Jen Joines of Anaheim, California does. She rescued mini mare Kricket, and then because she was so attached to Jen’s horse, she started taking her on fitness rides. Now they do runs together with Jen on foot, and endurance rides with a horse as a leader. [Though She Be But Little, She is Fierce]

The family of a young rider who took his own life are campaigning for an end to bullying. Bradley John, 14, died on 14 September, having been being bullied at school. His family is sharing Bradley’s story to raise awareness of the devastating impact bullying can have.
